• Description

BMW MOTORRAD OFFICAL RENT & TRAVEL PARTNER PORTUGAL

Motoxplorers is the result of more than 25 years of motorcycle touring around the globe. We're a passionate and professional team, totally dedicated to offering a unique and exclusive travel experience.

In 2009 we were pioneers in the creation of the only professional structure specifically dedicated to Motorcycle Travelling in Portugal. All the tours we offer on this website were thoroughly scouted by our guides, which choose the best roads, the most exceptional accommodation, the concealed attractions and all the details that change a simple tour into a most memorable one.

Along the last 5 years, we have developed the project "Portugal Best Riding Roads" where we have scouted and cataloged the most beautiful and genuine corners of our country. The result is routes that show the best and most authentic Portugal, a country where the sun shines more than 220 days a year, full of magnificent and deserted roads where time still passes slowly.

Motoxplorers is a company created by motorcyclists to motorcyclists, a team that knows the specific needs of a motorcycle traveler and that can help you on your next tour, to Portugal or the World.

 • Day 1 – Day 3
 • Day 4 – Day 6
 • Day 7 – Day 9
 • Day 10 – Day 12
 • Day 13 – Day 15
 • Day 16 – Day 17

From Portugal to Spain

On the first day after your arrival at Lisbon airport, you will meet your guide and the other participants at the Motoxplorers Adventure Store. After you have received everything you need for your big European tour, you will start your first journey with the rest of the group to the hotel in Lisbon and go out for dinner together.

On the second day, the route takes you through some of Portugal's most beautiful mountain ranges, deep into the country's interior. Enjoy the beautiful Açor and Estrela mountains surrounded by unspoilt nature. Take a break in the small historic village of Piódão with its stunning views before travelling to the highest mountain on the Portuguese mainland: Serra da Estrela. There, you can let the extraordinary impressions of the first day sink in.

The third day starts with a route along small towns that you can explore during the journey. Take a short coffee break in one of the most important historical villages in the history of Portuguese defence: Almeida, which is surrounded by a fortress that looks like a breathtaking twelve-pointed star from the air. Then it’s on to the Douro Natural Park, which links Portugal and Spain along the river of the same name. Crossing the Douro, you will reach Salamanca as early as possible so that you have enough time to spend the rest of the day visiting the impressive Salamanca Cathedral or the lively Plaza Mayor.

Charming wine regions and Spanish culture

The fourth day takes you along two well-known sections of the Way of St James: the 'Via de la Plata' and the French Way. Along the route, you will take a peaceful lunch break in the town of Burgos, where you will also have the opportunity to visit the city's imposing cathedral. Beautiful scenery accompanies you throughout the day, and you may come across a pilgrim or two. The day ends to the north in the wine region of La Rioja, where you'll begin to notice a change in your surroundings, with them becoming increasingly greener and more mountainous. Check into your hotel in the small town of Haro and enjoy a wonderful view with one of Spain's most delicious wines.

The fifth day is all about Spanish tradition and culture. You set off towards the heart of La Rioja to the traditional city of Logroño, and after a short stopover in the Basque Country, you continue on to Pamplona. You have the opportunity to spend some time there and have a coffee at Iruña: Ernest Hemingway's favourite restaurant. The crowning finale of the day is the last stage into the Pyrenees, more precisely into the Monte Perdido National Park, where you can end your day in a relaxed manner.

On the sixth day of your trip, you set off in the morning for Catalonia and thus also towards the Mediterranean. On the way, you can visit the special pilgrimage church of Nuestra Señora de Torreciudad, which is a real postcard motif with the Pyrenees in the background. In Tarragona, a visit to the spectacular amphitheatre awaits you, and from Garraf Natural Park you can enjoy an absolutely magnificent view of the sea. You end the day in the vibrant city of Barcelona.

The magic of Provence

On the seventh day, you take a break from riding: Barcelona awaits you! Explore the wide range of gastronomic and cultural offerings in the capital of Catalonia. See the impressive ‘La Sagrada Família’ church or try out some of the best tapas the city has to offer!

It's back onto your motorbike on the eighth day, when perhaps the most beautiful stage of the whole tour awaits you: crossing the Pyrenees on endless mountain roads and between impressive mountain ranges. Feel the magic of the Pyrenees in the Cadí Moxieró Natural Park, make a stopover in Andorra and then cross the border into France. Once you arrive in the medieval town of Carcassonne – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – you can let the many impressions of the day sink in.

You start the ninth day of the Europe Grand Tour well rested. The French region of Provence has a very special charm with beautiful coastal regions, historical culture and breathtaking scenery. Enjoy a coffee with a view of the deep blue sea during your stop in Séte, pass through Nîmes and Arles and end your day with a stroll through the alleyways of Aix-en-Provence.

From France to Italy

The tenth day is upon us and with it, the most charming section of the French Rivera: the Côte d'Azur. You can enjoy a view of the sea along the coast. You make a short stopover in Cannes and St Tropéz and in Nice, the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes, then you return to your hotel for the night.

The eleventh day has a very special highlight in store for you: crossing the border into Italy! In Monaco – the second smallest state in the world – you take a photo break and explore the highlights of the town before travelling along the Italian Riviera to the charming little town of Sanremo. Here you can enjoy the architecture and Italian life before you reach the end of the stage: Milan.

The twelfth day gives you the opportunity to relax a little and explore Italy's second largest city. Milan is all about fashion and at the same time offers a multitude of sights and restaurants to discover! You will also get tips from your tour guide.

Natural paradise and picturesque towns

After enjoying city life and the cosmopolitan atmosphere along the coast to the full on the last few days, on the thirteenth day you immerse yourself fully in the nature of the Alps. The marvellous mountain roads, waterfalls and small Alpine villages offer spectacular views, as does your stopover at Lake Como. You then cross the border into Switzerland, make a short stop in the St. Moritz ski resort and finally travel to your destination for the day in Davos.

On the fourteenth day, you set off from Davos for the seventh country on the Grand Europe Tour: Liechtenstein, nestled between the Swiss and Austrian mountains. You then cross the border into Bavaria for the first time to visit Lindau, a picturesque island on Lake Constance. The onward journey finally takes you to Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol. Here you can recover from the day and enjoy a walk with a wonderful view.

The fifteenth day takes you to the last stage of your spectacular journey. The highlight of the day is also the first stopover: Neuschwanstein Castle. Majestically situated on a hill and surrounded by a beautiful landscape, this experience is not to be missed. You then ride to a small town at the foot of the Alps, which has become an important part of BMW Motorrad's history: Garmish-Partenkirchen, which is associated with the BMW Motorrad Days. Your onward journey takes you past Lake Starnberg to the capital of Bavaria: Munich. Enjoy the rich variety of culture, history and gastronomy here and end the day in peace with a beer.

The home of BMW

A very special highlight for all BMW enthusiasts awaits you at the end of the sixteenth day. Take the opportunity to visit the halls of the BMW Museum and BMW Welt. Immerse yourself in the history of the brand and learn all about the milestones of BMW and BMW Motorrad.

On the last day of the Europe Grand Tour, you will return home with a wealth of new experiences and can reminisce about this spectacular journey for a long time to come!

Ride the adventure of your life on a motorbike through the unique landscape of Europe.

FAQs on Portugal Motorcycle Rentals and Tours

No, sorry. Mad or Nomad do not offer any rentals, tours or services. Please contact the companies listed on this page directly.

This page displays motorcycle rental and tour companies from around the world. We do a lot of research into these companies before adding them and speak to the managers and owners. Many of the companies we have also used in the past or have met the owners while travelling.

While we have collected them all together in one place for your ease, we take no responsibility in your business with them. We’re simply showcasing companies in one easy-to-use place and are not involved with your dealings with them. Any business you have with these companies is at your own risk. We will not be held liable or responsible in any way.

The best time to rent a motorcycle or join a tour in Portugal is from March to June and September to November.

Take a video on your phone of the entire bike, do a walk around and film the condition of the chain, fairings, tyres, any bumps, dents and scratches. By doing so, you can’t get caught out and blamed for something you didn’t do when you return it.

Check the wheel bearings, chain, oil, coolant, brakes, clutch and that the handlebars are straight. Tyres need a decent amount of tread and should be suitable for the terrain you’re riding in. Take it for a short test ride and don’t feel pressured or rushed. Go with your gut and if there’s anything that catches your eye, speak to the owners immediately.

This is down to personal preference, where you’re riding and what’s available. If you’re renting or joining a motorcycle tour in the States and you’re going to be primarily on road, then you may want to opt for a big touring bike. If you’re headed to rural or mountainous countries and are going off-road in Central Asia for example, then go for a mid-weight single-cylinder.

We usually find lighter and cheaper rental bikes are better because they’re less stress, you don’t have to worry about dropping them all the time, are easier to fix and more fun.

For more info on choosing the right motorcycle for your trip, have a look at the below guide and also check out the adventure bikes page too.

 • How to Choose Your Adventure Motorcycle
 • Adventure Motorcycle Guides

We recommend lightweight and comfortable gear suitable for the climate you’re travelling in. If you’re heading to a particularly cold place, then go for Gore-Tex pro laminate.

But, the best all-round option is ventilated, light and comfy adventure bike gear. Take the thermal and waterproof liners out and leave them at home. Take a cheap pair of waterproof throwovers and a compressible down jacket that can be stuffed into a small bag. You can use both items as layering if it’s cold and rainy and they double up when off the bike and will reduce the amount of gear you have to take with you in your luggage.

It’s always better to take your own bike gear over renting or using kit from the rental company. You know your own stuff fits, works and is comfortable – especially your helmet. The last thing you want is to get a few days into your trip and get a headache from a tight lid.

Check out our riding gear article for more info on how to choose the right clothing and the guides section for our recommended kit.

 • How to Choose Your Adventure Riding Gear
 • Adventure Bike Riding Gear Guides

Contact the rental or tour company and ask what luggage the bike comes with. Your bike might come with soft bags, hard boxes, a top box or nothing at all.

You can often leave the gear you don’t want to take with you on the trip at the rental or tour company’s headquarters. So you can travel on a plane with a larger kit bag and just take the bag and gear you need on the bike.

The type of luggage you need depends on the type of trip you’re on, how much off-roading you’re doing and how long you’re going for.

A good option is to go for a waterproof duffle bag and a pair of Rok Straps as this type of luggage setup can be fastened to any bike’s pillion seat and you don’t need racks. And take an additional small and light rucksack for your important gear (camera, passport etc) so you don’t have to worry about it when off the bike.

For more info on choosing your motorcycle luggage, check out our guide page below.

READ MORE: Adventure Bike Luggage Guides

Companies may offer motorcycle insurance as an optional extra, include it in the price or not offer it at all. This again depends on the country you’re riding in.

It’s worth getting insurance if you can and ask what the excess is as you will usually be liable for damage to the bike.

Motorcycle insurance is separate from personal travel insurance. This is incredibly important and you need to be very careful when choosing your personal insurance policy because the fine print often won’t cover you for bikes over 125cc, renting, touring or using a bike as your main mode of transport.

Check out our Admin section as you’ll find detailed guides on personal insurance, paperwork and safety on the road.

Motoxplorers - PORTUGAL Motorcycle Rentals and Tours

Discussion in ' Vendors ' started by Carlos M , Jul 3, 2012 .

Carlos M

Carlos M www.motoxplorers.com

PORTUGAL Motorcycle Rentals and Tours Hello All, Being inmates here for almost 10 years, it is about time we open a Vendor thread! Motoxplorers is a small company based in Lisbon, Portugal. It is owned by 5 travel companions, I believe all of us inmates here. Here in ADVrider you may have come across this very nice thread by one of our partners Cazevedo . We have a legal certification as a rent-a-bike company which is given by Portuguese Transport Authorities (License nr: 129/2010 IMTT) and we are certified by the Portuguese National Tourist Office (licence nr 2242011). We're very conveniently located 6 kms West of Lisbon airport and 5 km North of the historical centre. We rent a fleet of BMW motorcycles (F650GS, R1200GS and R1200GS Adv) all equipped with top and side cases (included in the rental prices). We allow unlimited miles with no extra charge, our insurances cover most of Europe.
Check small promo video here . Portugal may be a very nice start/end point for a tour around Europe, we have great roads and landscapes and an incredible historical heritage. Because of all that, we also developed a few tours in Portugal and Spain. We sell these in various formats: you can simply rent us a bike, a Garmin GPS loaded with all the tour's Points of Interest, you can have us deal with hotel reservations for the whole trip or you can join a group on a guided tour. Check here a nice article on BMW MC Mag about one of our tours. Visit our webpage and feel free to contact us for advice on how to tour our little corner of the world.

Well, our attention to this thread is in line with our toned-down marketing , sorry for that, we've been busy! A lot of stuff happened meanwhile... here's a condensed update. Motoxplorers has moved its location in Lisbon, we are now even closer to the airport and the city center and have better conditions to provide your tour start We have renewed our fleet: And we've become Official Partners of BMW Motorrad. We now have two BMW certified off-road Instructors among our staff. We continue to explore our corner of the world, offering guided and self-guided tours of Portugal and Spain: But we also enlarged our range of outgoing destinations. We now offer guided tours of: Morocco: Iceland: And Southern Africa (Cape Town to Victoria Falls): We have thousands of pictures in our smugmug , if you're looking for travel inspiration, don't miss it. Our website is an ongoing job, but worth a visit if you're thinking about a visit to Portugal, Spain or dreaming with one of our tours abroad. And we also have a facebook account that we try to keep updated. We are still a small company of motorcycle travel nuts, don't forget to mention your ADVRider affiliation if you do contact us - we'll try our best to provide some help!

ICELAND ADVENTURE TOUR

A GREAT ADVENTURE IN EUROPE'S WILDEST ISLAND

motoxplorers bmw tours & rentals

Ten dazzling days on a land forged by fire and ice, through a route that mixes gravel and beautiful mountain roads. Visiting all the highlights of this island, so close to the Arctic Circle . Glaciers of shivering blue , explosive g eysers , boiling mud lagoons , violent rivers , gigantic waterfalls, and dark, silent, volcano cones, shape the landscape in such a cinematographic way that they are perceived as unreal. We can ac tually see the junction of two tectonic plates and literally have a foot in Europe and another in America . We'll visit Europe's largest glacier and sail among Icebergs in one of the very few glacier lagoons of the Old World.

MotoXplorers leads groups in Iceland since 2009 and we have shared its wonders with more than one hundred motorcyclists - all of them describing the tour as mind-blowing.
