Ukraine-Russia war latest: Kremlin responds to claims Russia is targeting Olympics

After reports that Moscow is targeting the Paris Olympics with a disinformation campaign, the Kremlin has responded. Meanwhile, NATO only has two to three years to prepare before Russia regains its ability to launch a conventional attack on the alliance, Norway's top general has said.

US President Joe Biden will meet Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy this week, a US official said overnight.

President Biden flew to France on Tuesday and is spending five days there to attend D-Day celebrations in Normandy.

That will be the setting for Biden's meeting with Zelenskyy, in which they will talk about the war effort to repel Russian invaders.

The pair will also meet again at the G7 summit in Italy between 13 and 15 June.

The potential use of some $300bn in frozen Russian assets to aid the Ukraine war effort will be discussed by Biden and Macron during the visit.

While in France, President Biden is set to deliver a high-profile speech and hold a formal state visit with President Emmanuel Macron.

Biden and Zelenskyy last met in December 2023 when the Ukrainian president was in Washington DC making a plea for further military and economic aid.

Aid packages from the US to Ukraine have been delayed in recent months after Biden's opponents in Congress have sought to frustrate his efforts in a significant election year.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

Before we begin, here is a recap of the key events over the last 24 hours.

  • US President Joe Biden announced overnight that he will meet Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a visit to Europe this week;
  • The US also is set to provide a $50bn loan to Ukraine that would be repaid by profits from frozen Russian assets if the EU can indefinitely extend sanctions against Moscow, according to reports
  • Russia could be ready to attack NATO in two to three years, Norway's top general said;
  • The Kremlin has said there is no substance to allegations that Russia was targeting this summer's Olympics with a disinformation campaign;
  • Alexei Navalny's mother and his supporters visited his grave to lay flowers and pay tribute to the late Kremlin critic on what would have been his 48th birthday.

We're pausing our coverage for today but we will be back tomorrow with more updates.

Here is a rundown of the key developments today:

  • Norway's top general said NATO only has two to three years to prepare before Russia regains its ability to launch a conventional attack on the alliance;
  • German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Ukraine's use of Western-supplied weapons to strike targets in Russia will not "contribute to escalation";
  • Microsoft made allegations in the New York Times that Russia was targeting the upcoming Olympics with a disinformation campaign;
  • The mother of Alexei Navalny and his supporters visited his grave to lay flowers and pay tribute to the late Kremlin critic on what would have been his 48th birthday.

You can scroll back through the blog to read all our updates from today.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said any foreign military staff training Ukrainian troops will not have any "immunity" from Russian strikes.

"Any instructors who train the Kyiv regime's troops don't have any sort of immunity," he said in a conference call with reporters today.

Reports have suggested talks are ongoing over whether French instructors could soon be sent to support training centres in Ukraine.

Ukrainian troops have been preparing to fire towards Russian positions on the frontline in the eastern Donetsk region.

Donetsk is one of the four provinces Vladimir Putin proclaimed as part of Russia in an illegal referendum at the start of the war and fighting here is particularly intense.

Russia's two biggest banks plan to open branches and offices in the regions of Ukraine that Moscow claimed to have annexed next month.

Sberbank chief executive German Gref said in Russia's upper house of parliament the bank would be "present throughout the whole country's territory".

VTB chief executive Andrei Kostin said they would open two offices in Luhansk in July and had plans to start serving clients in Donetsk and the port city of Mariupol by the end of the year.

For context : Vladimir Putin illegally annexed Ukraine's Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in September 2022, after what Ukraine and its Western allies branded sham referendums.

The move was condemned by many countries as illegal.

Russian forces only partly control the four regions.

Manufacturers and distributors need to improve compliance with Russia-related sanctions, the deputy secretary of the US Treasury has said.

American companies in particular need to pay more attention to their supply chains to ensure they are not complicit with Russia's evasion of sanctions over Ukraine, Wally Adeyemo said in an interview with CNBC.

He said manufacturers of microelectronics and machine tools especially needed to step up compliance to help cut off supplies of "dual use" goods to Russia, including from Chinese producers.

Freight forwarders and distributors need to do the same and financial institutions need to look at their relationships with small and medium-sized banks in "countries of concern" because Moscow is looking for ways around US sanctions, Mr Adeyemo said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy's chief of staff has said that using Western weapons to strike inside Russia was a vital decision that would impact Moscow's tactical aviation and its offensive ability in border regions.

"This will impact the conduct of the war, planning of counteroffensive actions, and will weaken Russians' abilities to use their forces in the border areas," Andriy Yermak said on Telegram.

Russia has said the move would mark an escalation to the conflict and has threatened war with NATO if Western weapons are used in its airspace.

By  Ivor Bennett , Moscow correspondent

Dozens of Alexei Navalny supporters have visited his grave to lay flowers and pay tribute to the late Kremlin critic on what would have been his 48th birthday.

The opposition leader died at an Arctic prison colony in February, prompting outrage from Western governments.

Nearly four months on, his family say the cause of his death remains unexplained.

His widow Yulia Navalnaya has accused Vladimir Putin of ordering his murder, and last week his allies called for additional sanctions to punish the Russian president's inner circle.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied any involvement in his death. According to his death certificate, he died of natural causes.

Navalny's mother, Lyudmila, as well as his mother-in-law Alla Abrosimova, were among those who gathered at his grave in the Borisovskoye cemetery in southeast Moscow today.

Video posted by SOTAvision on the social media platform Telegram shows a memorial service led by Dmitry Safronov, a priest who was previously banned from clerical duties by the Russian Orthodox Church for presiding over a similar service in March, which marked 40 days since the activist's death.

According to the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper, three police officers were on duty near the cemetery but they did not make any arrests.

Having been convicted of multiple charges, ranging from fraud to extremism, Navalny was serving sentences totalling more than 30 years when he died.

His Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) is outlawed in Russia, and has been accused by the authorities of having links to the CIA.

What remains of his team now operates in exile.

Polish farmers have resumed their protest blockade at the Ukrainian border crossing due to agricultural imports from the country.

Farmers in Poland have staged sporadic demonstrations at the border since last autumn.

The demonstrators are blocking trucks from leaving Ukraine.

Cargo vehicles heading to Ukraine are allowed to enter by 12 trucks per 12 hours and by four trucks with humanitarian aid per hour, the Ukrainian Border Guard Service said.

Other vehicles are continuing as usual.

"Representatives of Polish farmers demand reduced imports of Ukrainian crops to Polish territory from Ukraine," the Border Guard Service said.

Disputes over crop imports have strained the relationship between Warsaw and Kyiv, with both countries being major agricultural producers.

Polish farmers have complained that Ukrainian products create uneven competition, particularly since the EU lifted tariffs in 2022.

Poland banned the import of several products from Ukraine, including grain, corn, and rapeseed, in 2023.

Ukraine’s new ‘death scythe’ weapon can take out Putin’s troops from 1.5 miles away

Ukraine's new 'death scythe' weapon can take out Putin's troops from 1.5 miles away

Robotic systems developed by Ukraine for battlefield use are said to be having a deadly effect as they catch Russian troops off-guard.

Three military units reported that they have deployed the remote-controlled platforms in operations against Vladimir Putin ’s forces.

One said that an operator drinking coffee in a bunker used a ShaBlya 7.62 PKT — a semi-autonomous machine gun unit — to lay down fire on the Kremlin’s troops while keeping his own personnel safe.

Another, the Da Vinci Wolves battalion, which is fighting on some of the hottest parts of the frontline, reported that the mobile ground system ‘held back an assault and took out many Russians’.

Moscow’s troops — said to have been ordered to mount costly ‘wave attacks’— have called the ShaBlya a ‘death scythe’.

United24, Ukraine’s official fundraising platform, is supporting the step-change in battlefield technology, with the use of ‘promising’ AI being developed to upgrade the various systems.

Metro.co.uk told last week how the first generation of robots, which were already being developed by Ukraine in the years before Putin’s all-out attack, mark a new era in modern warfare.

The ‘ironclad’ machinery — some of which can withstand small arms fire — can also be used to provide logistical support, conduct reconnaissance and surveillance and for ‘kamikaze’ missions.

Ukraine's new 'death scythe' weapon can take out Putin's troops from 1.5 miles away

Nataliia Kushnerska, chief operations officer at the Ukrainian defence tech cluster Brave1, told Metro.co.uk: ‘First and foremost, it’s about minimizing the human factor.

‘Ground robotic systems are capable of performing a wide range of tasks that were previously carried out by humans.

‘These include reconnaissance, engaging targets, demining, cargo transportation and casualty evacuation.

‘The ability to perform these functions with robots allows for the reduction of military personnel who were previously assigned to these tasks.

‘Additionally, the use of robotic systems increases the accuracy and efficiency of task execution.

‘Moreover, the sudden appearance of Ukrainian robots on the frontline catches enemy forces off guard, as they lack experience in countering robotic systems.’

Ukraine's new 'death scythe' weapon can take out Putin's troops from 1.5 miles away

The ShaBlya’s advantage lies in its excellent optics, including thermal imaging, according to Ms Kushnerska. An operator inputs the distance to the target, aims and fires accurately at distances up to 2.5km.

Ms Kushnerska cited reports from two frontline Ukrainian units testifying to the deadly effectiveness of the weapon.

The 5th Separate Assault Brigade, which has been defending the key strategic city of Chasiv Yar, has been shown in a video using the remote system to devastating effect on a highway.

The brigade has been engaged in fierce fighting despite shortages in manpower and ammunition, with a report in The Times describing how they are fighting to the last man as they try to hold the settlement in Donetsk.

An unnamed brigade member said: ‘We installed a remote automatic turret at the position while its operator drank coffee in the bunker.

‘We controlled the battlefield using a drone. As soon as something moved, we covered it with fire. The robot was targeted with mortar fire but our personnel remained safe.’

MOROZ (COMBAT ROBOTS) (Picture: UNITED24)

Another report came from a brigade fighting near the shattered city of Avdiivka, which was captured by Russian forces in February 2024.

A ShaBlya was used in an attempt to repel an assault amid heavy fighting as the Kremlin’s troops tried to wrest control of the settlement.

An unnamed soldier in the Da Vinci Wolves battalion said: ‘When the enemy finally captured that position, there were no dead Ukrainians there.

‘It turned out to be a pretty good exchange.’

The robots can be broadly grouped into three types of combat systems encompassing minelaying and self-destructing platforms and logistical and medical evacuation vehicles.

The operators remain in shelters up to four kilometres away and can use the platforms in coordinated swarms.

The ShaBlya and other systems designed specifically for combat can be equipped with machine guns, such as the 7.62mm calibre PKT and PKM and 12.7mm NSVT and M2 Browning.

Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces said yesterday that they are using uncrewed cars to evacuate people and damaged vehicles on the frontline.

The elite group of operators described the vehicles as being able to ‘move smoothly on any surface’, enabling them to carry out their work ‘even more efficiently and unnoticeably’.

(Picture: UNITED24)

While the current platforms are being operated remotely by humans, Ms Kushnerska told Metro.co.uk that AI is being developed to enhance the platforms and had already yielded results in ‘close combat’.

‘The use of AI in unmanned ground vehicles is one of the promising directions for the development of both technologies,’ she said.

‘Ukrainian developers are currently exploring options for such integration.

‘When it comes specifically to using artificial intelligence in weapon systems, Ukrainian developers have achieved the greatest success in integrating it into UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] guidance and control systems. Here we already have concrete results being tested in close combat conditions.’

While Moscow’s forces possess superior numbers and firepower, Brave1 has learned that the platforms are instilling fear in the enemy.

‘During combat operations, Ukrainian soldiers used the ShaBlya 7.62 PKT against the Russians,’ Ms Kushnerska said.

‘After the meeting with this robotic system, Russians characterised it as “the scythe of death” or “a robot working for the Ukrainians”.’

Robots at UNITED24 Summit (Picture: UNITED24)

The project backed with donations via United 24 forms part of what Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said is an ‘army of drones’.

This also encompasses maritime and aerial drones, including the ‘sea baby’ vehicles which have been used to devastating effect against Russia’s navy after they were developed ‘in-house’ by Ukraine.

Marking United24’s second anniversary last week, Mr Zelenskyy said: ‘Now we are adding another component to help people – we have to make it commonplace for our Defense Forces to use robotic platforms.’

Ms Kushnerska told Metro.co.uk that donations to Ukraine’s official fundraising channel were helping to ‘daily defend freedom and democracy in the war against the aggressor’.

She added: ‘By using robots to perform tasks that previously required human involvement, we minimise risks to the lives and health of soldiers.

‘With robots, operations can be controlled from a safe location, without exposing oneself to danger. The more lives we save, the more chances we have to withstand and achieve victory in this war.

‘Robots are critically necessary for this.’

Ms Kusherska spoke as the UK Ministry of Defence published figures showing that the number of Russian dead and wounded had ‘likely’ reached 500,000 since the start of the all-out invasion in February 2022.

No figure was given for Ukrainian casualties.

The intelligence update stated: ‘It is highly likely that most Russian forces receive only limited training, and they are unable to carry out complex offensive operations. As a result, Russia employs small-scale but costly wave attacks in an effort to weaken Ukrainian defences.’

My first trip to Russia was a sudden travel project that I had to do for a client; that’s why I didn’t have the time to thoroughly research the sights that I’ll be seeing… I did have some idea about most of the city’s attractions, but not so much about the beauty that is found “ under ” the capital. So imagine my surprise when I first set foot in the breathtaking Moscow Metro stations!

After all, I have witnessed beautiful railway stations in Europe before, but the scale and design of the ones in Moscow were nothing short of a masterpiece. (Much like St Petersburg Metro Stations ).

It may just be a way of transport for Russian locals, but as a visitor, a huge number of them were overwhelmingly gorgeous that I could have easily mistaken as grand halls, castles, or cathedrals!

Looking for other must-do activities?

Check out these Russia travel guides now!

In fact, they say that though London has the oldest or that Shanghai has the biggest train stations, Moscow’s very own are said to be architectural legends in their own right, making them one of the most beautiful in the world.

With over 241 Moscow Metro stations, you will also find that no two stations look alike — some may be quite simple, but most are elegantly decorated. Surely it would be impossible to see all of them in one go, so in order to save you time, money, and effort, I have compiled below a list of the 15 most beautiful Moscow Metro stations that you MUST see!

…But before we jump into that, let me share with you some brief history, as well as some metro tips that you need to take note of.

Table of Contents

Metro Travel Guide

How to use the moscow metro system.

Open from 5:30AM to 1AM, the Moscow Metro is relatively cheap — certainly a small price to pay for enjoying well-connected transportation AND jaw-dropping architecture!

The Metro is extremely clean and well-guarded by train staff too, so it’s relatively safe; but still, be wary of possible pickpockets because Moscow is a big city. To help make your journey a pleasant one, take note of the following tips.

» Ticket Cost

Troika Metro Card

  • There are NO zones, so even with just one ticket, you don’t have to worry if you went too far.
  • This red paper ticket can also work on buses and trolleys.
  • RUB36 is deducted from your card for every trip taken and you can change to a bus, tram, or monorail for an additional RUB20 in the next 90 minutes.
  • It can be used to pay for Aeroexpress tickets to the airport, Velobike sharing, as well as some other city museums and parks.
  • Day and multiple-day passes are also available for purchase.

» Purchasing Metro Tickets

Kacca Ticket Office

Buying tickets is easy because you can get them in every Metro station at either of the following…

  • You don’t have to speak Russian because you can just hold up your fingers to show the number of tickets you need; otherwise, make use of a translation app
  • Accept both money and cards, and are also both in Russian and English.

» Top Tips for Navigating Moscow’s Metro

  • Download a Moscow Metro map for iOS or Android (both can be used offline) — but for a more hassle-free experience, I recommend downloading Google Maps . I used it during my stay in Moscow and I got around just fine!
  • If you want help translating the Russian signages, download a translation app .
TRIVIA & HELPFUL TIP: An upcoming station is announced by a male voice when a train is going inbound to the city center (on the Circle line, if it’s going clockwise), whereas a female voice is used on a train that is going outbound away from the city center (counter-clockwise on the Circle Line). . Some people say that this is the case because a man’s voice helps encourages people who are heading off to work, and a female’s voice helps passengers relax on their way back home!

Aquarelle Train (Moscow)

Aquarelle Train photo by: Shutterstock

  • Stand on the right and walk on the left.
  • RUSH HOURS: Usually from 8AM to 10AM in the morning, and 5PM to 7PM in the afternoon. The trains will get crowded so it’s best to avoid these times if you want to do some sightseeing at Moscow Metro stations. Sunday will usually be a quiet day, or if you can come as early as 6AM in the morning, the better.
  • GUIDED TOUR: If you want a hassle-free experience, you can also just join a guided Metro tour (or do a private tour ) !
  • There is also a Sokolniki Retro Train that is designed after the original 1930s trains, and it is typically used around a major anniversary of the Moscow Metro system.
  • During Russian holidays, some of the trains are also decorated.

15 Most Beautiful Moscow Metro Stations

Finally, you are about to read the list of the topmost beautiful Moscow Metro Stations. You’ll be surprised to see that most of these train stations portray a certain era or history in Russia, if not a political leader or influential person — as such, you might even feel that you are walking through a massive underground museum!

» BONUS: Other Noteworthy Moscow Metro Stations

  • Vorob’evy Gory is a unique station because it is on a bridge that crosses the Moscow River!
  • Line 2, Green: Dinamo
  • Line 4, Light Blue: If you’re a history buff, you might like to explore this train line because it holds the oldest stations.
  • Line 5, Brown: Belorusskaya, Park Kultury
  • Line 6, Yellow: VDNKh
  • Line 7, Violet: Spartak
  • Line 10, Light Green: Dostoyevskaya

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Yes, it is allowed! In fact, there are some spots in most Metro stations that are marked as photo points. The only restriction that they have is for film-style shooting because for those, you will need the permission of the Metro authorities (because of this rule, I have read accounts wherein people weren’t allowed to shoot with a tripod; but well, I was traveling solo and have used a tripod in Komsomolskaya station but no one reprimanded me).

Though the trains run every 2 minutes or so, you will still need quite some time for transfers. Even so, it is possible to enjoy the 15 metro stations stated in the list for a whole day; but, if you don’t want to spend so much time underground, you can just take note of these stations and insert some of them in your day-to-day Moscow itinerary as you please.

I would highly recommend exploring Koltsevaya (Line 5, Brown) which is the so-called ‘Circle Line’. After all, its 12 stations are said to be the grandest given how they were built during Stalin’s regime. Nevertheless, try to also mix it with some of the stations found on Line 3 because places like Arbatskaya, Elektrozavodskaya, and Ploschad Revolutsii are places that are worth your while too!

Absolutely! Join this guided Metro tour (or do a private tour ) to have a hassle-free experience.

In general, Russia is a safe country. Just take note though that since Moscow is a major city with a massive number of people, petty theft can still happen especially when you’re in a tight space such as in a train car — so just stay street smart and use your common sense at all times and you’ll definitely be fine. Rest assured, there are security staff in every train station, so if you ever need assistance, they are pretty easy to spot.

How to get from Sheremetyevo Airport (SVO) to central Moscow

Sheremetyevo airport

Sheremetyevo airport

1. Aeroexpress

The fastest way to get from this airport to the center of Moscow is the Aeroexpress train, which has a station right in the airport building. With no traffic on the way, you’ll arrive at the Savelovskaya train station in 45 min and the Belorusskaya train station in 53 minutes, from both you can get on the metro, from which it’s convenient to go anywhere in the city.

The first train leaves Sheremetyevo at 4:45 a.m., and the last departs 12:42 a.m. Tickets on the Aeroexpress go for 500 rubles ($8) at the ticket office and 450 rubles ($7.2) online. You can buy tickets in advance via the website aeroexpress.ru , or download the app .

Bus is a cheaper way to reach Moscow, but you might end up in a traffic jam. Another disadvantage is that the bus only goes to a metro station at the end of the line, near the city limits, so you’ll need another 30 minutes to reach the city center.

To Khovrino metro station (Green line):

- 1195 Aeroexpress buss (departure each 15 min., tickets $150 and available to buy online here )

To Rechnoy Vokzal metro station (Green line):

- Bus No. 851 runs from 5:37 a.m. to 12:49 a.m. (and to 12:45 a.m. on weekends); 55 rubles ($0.8). Travel time about 50 minutes.

- The so-called marshrutka mini-bus No. 949 runs from 6:45 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.; 80 rubles ($1.3). Travel time about 30 minutes.

To Planernaya metro station (Purple line):

- Bus No. 817 runs from 5:22 a.m. to 12:08 a.m.; 55 rubles ($0.8). Travel time around 40 minutes.

- Mini bus No. 948 runs from 6:45 a.m. to 9:15 p.m.; 80 rubles ($1.3). Travel time around 30 minutes.

To Yugo-Zapadnaya metro station (Red line)

- Night bus H1 runs from 0:15, every half an hour, 55 rubles ($0.8).

If you arrive at night and don’t want to wait for a night bus, then take a taxi. But don’t take one that’s already at the airport because they charge 5,000 rubles ($80) and more; in fact, the ride should cost no more than 2,000 rubles ($30).

There are several services and apps to help you book a taxi in advance and the price is fixed no matter how long you spend in traffic jams:

- Uber is available in Moscow

- Yandex Taxi (the app works in many languages)

- Gett Taxi (works in Russian, English and Hebrew)

- City Mobil (available in English).

The last two are available for booking in advance, but there are usually many cars in the vicinity of the airport that’ll pick you up in 5-10 minutes. When you arrive at the airport you can get online with free WiFi in the terminal, and book a car. They’ll probably ask you to call after passing through border control because waiting in front of the airport is free for only the first 15 minutes, and then it’s quite expensive.

4. Car sharing

Several car-sharing companies are available at Sheremetyevo. You need an ID, driver’s license, credit card and a smartphone. You’ll need to sign a contract with a company in order to access its vehicle (you can also do this online). The leading companies are: Delimobil ( click here to find more about access at the airport); Yandex Drive (available in English on Google Play ); and BelkaCar ( works only in Russian ). You should download an app in advance to find the nearest car.

5. Rent a car

All major car rental companies can be found at Sheremetyevo: Sixt , Europcar , Avis , and Rentalcars . You can rent a car online or by visiting the rental office. Booking in advance doesn’t influence the price much but it does provide greater choice of car models.

6. Rent a helicopter

If you’re rich enough or adhere to the notion that ‘You only live once,’ then Sheremetyevo offers a great option to avoid traffic and roads entirely. Go to the airport’s website for more information about helicopter rental - www.svo.aero.
