How to watch MTG Pro Tour Phyrexia Philadelphia

Image of Danny Forster

The first tabletop Magic: The Gathering tournament since 2020 returns through the Phyrexia Pro Tour in Philadelphia, showcasing almost 250 of the best players from around the globe.

Tabletop MTG tournaments were put on hold in 2020, with the Magic World Championship XXVI being the last tabletop tournament to get played before the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. A major rework was applied to tabletop organized play and competitive digital tournaments heading into the 2022-2023 Magic season with the first Pro Tour tabletop tournament taking place in Philadelphia at the Phyrexia Magic Con.

Broadcast for the MTG Pro Tour in Philidelphia

pro tour philadelphia 2023 standings

The Pro Tour Philidelphia runs from Feb. 17 to 19, with a broadcast taking place during all three days of competition through Twitch . Days one and two kick off at 10am CT, and day three starts at 8am CT.

Casting the tournament are Maria Bartholdi, Paul Cheon, Cedric Phillips, Eilidh Lonie, Marshall Sutcliffe, Mani DaVoudi, and Corey Baumeister.

How did MTG players qualify for the Phyrexia Pro Tour?

pro tour philadelphia 2023 standings

Outlined in the new organized play rules, MTG players have a variety of paths that can lead to an invite at one of three Pro Tours taking place during the 2022-2023 season.

  • The top four players from the  MTG  World Championship XXVIII earned invites to all three Pro Tour tournaments during the 2022-2023 season.

  • Top finishers at Regional Championships.

What are the MTG formats at Pro Tour Phyrexia?

pro tour philadelphia 2023 standings

The best Magic players from around the globe will gather in Philidelphia for the first Pro Tour of the 2022-2023 season. Players will compete in two formats: Draft and Pioneer Constructed. Any player who reaches a total of 12 match wins during the first two days automatically advances to the top-eight playoff bracket on day three.

Draft rounds will take place on days one and two, featuring the new MTG set, Phyrexia: All Will Be One . A total of three rounds of ONE Limited Draft will get played each of the first two days, followed by Pioneer Constructed. Only Pioneer Constructed will get played during the top-eight playoff bracket.

Day one will feature rounds one to eight while day two showcases the final Swiss rounds of nine to 16. Day three gameplay is solely Pioneer Constructed in a best three out of five games for each round of the playoff bracket.

Players who finish with a record of 12-4 or better at the Pro Tour Philidelphia earn a direct invite to the 2022-2023 Magic World Championship. Match points also matter as the top 32 players with the highest adjusted match points from the season will also earn invites to Worlds.

The MTG Pro Tour is a series of top-level competitions for Magic: The Gathering . It pits the best of the best against one another for huge cash prizes, as well as fame and glory in the trading card game community. Here are the details.

To enter the Pro Tour, players must first qualify via a Local Qualifier and a Regional Qualifier. These two events come together in the Pro Tour, where players from different regions play against one another in one massive event. The year is then capped off by the World Championship, which has a massive cash prize and the opportunity for the winner to be memorialized in an upcoming Magic card.

Here's how the 2022-2023 Pro Tour season will shake out according to the Magic Wiki:

In between each event is a Regional Championship that will allow players to qualify for the Pro Tour, in addition to finalists from previous Pro Tours. Lastly, the Magic World Championship will be held Sept. 22-24, 2023 at MagicCon Las Vegas, USA, marking the grand finale of the 2022-2023 Pro Tour season.

The Pro Tour is Back! OP Announcement Details New Paths to the World Championship

Regional Championship Qualifiers

Regional championships, pro tours and the world championship, so what about arena and digital play, stream q&a with william jensen, wrapping up.

Official competitive tournaments have been a part of the fabric of Magic: The Gathering since nearly the beginning. The first Pro Tour, Wizards of the Coast’s primary structure for Organized Play (OP), took place over two decades ago in 1996. With the rise of digital Magic play and MTG Arena in particular, the Pro Tour was rebranded to the Mythic Championship and much of the focus shifted to Arena.

While most MTG players can probably agree that having a digital path to high-level professional play is a good thing, many felt that the focus on Arena and “Esports” drew too much focus away from tabletop play. The Pro Tour became the Mythic Championship and the current system of the Magic Pro League and Rivals League. Then starting in 2020, public health concerns took all of the physical play options off the table, so to speak, and many high-level players expressed pessimism about the state of Organized Play and its future.

With many of the aforementioned health concerns fading, Wizards has been hinting that something big was coming for OP. Almost a year ago, the company announced that the MPL and Rivals league would be coming to an end, and while some interpreted the news as the death of competitive Magic, Wizards was adamant that there was something big coming down the pipeline.

Top Players Weigh in and Wizards’ Response on the Future of MTG Competitive Play

After building hype for the announcement since last Thursday’s Weekly MTG stream , today was the day for us to finally learn what Wizards has in store for Organized Play – and it’s good news for those who have been yearning for a system reminiscent of the past. Starting with the 2022-2023 season, the Pro Tour will be returning with both tabletop and digital options.

The New Pro Tour

Wizards of the Coast has broken down the tabletop system leading to the World Championship into “four levels,” which funnel successful players up the Pro Tour structure. They’ve created this pyramid infographic to illustrate:

pro tour philadelphia 2023 standings

Starting at the lowest level of play, Regional Championship Qualifiers are open to any eligible players who want to compete. These events will be “largely” held at large WPN stores and will be managed by a regional tournament organizer for each region. Wizards announced the following list of organizers for each of the regions:

  • USA – Dreamhack
  • Canada – Face to Face Games
  • Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) – Legacy
  • Australia/New Zealand – Good Games
  • China – Kadou
  • Japan/Korea – Big Magic
  • Southeast Asia – Oracle Events
  • Chinese Taipei – Game Square
  • Brazil – City Class Games
  • Mexico/Central America/Caribbean – Yellow Rabbit
  • South America – Magicsur

Wizards has also lined up two promos that will be given to participants at the events: Lava Spike , which will be given to all participants while supplies last, and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx for top-finishing players.

pro tour philadelphia 2023 standings

Players who perform well in their local qualifying events will earn the opportunity to compete in the Regional Championships – major tournaments that will award qualifications to both the World Championship and the Pro Tour events. The complete details on how exactly these qualifications will be distributed haven’t yet been revealed, and apparently may vary somewhat depending on region and the region’s tournament organizer. Wizards says that they opted to give organizers flexibility in how they want to run the events.

Wizards also says that players will have “a variety of play options” at these events, but we have no further information about what they mean by that statement at this time. However, they did also say that the first round of local qualifiers will feature “a mix of Pioneer, Standard, Modern, and Limited,” so this will presumably apply to the other events as well.

The company emphasized that the Regional Championships are meant to be major events, and to check in with your region’s organizer through the list of organizers above for more details.

Just as with the regional qualifiers, the Regional Championships will have a promo for participating players. All competitors will receive a Teferi, Hero of Dominaria promo, and top finishers will get it in foil.

Three times a year, players who have qualified through the Regional Championships and other qualification paths will compete in the new Pro Tour events, featuring a $500,000 prize pool and more invitations to the World Championship.

pro tour philadelphia 2023 standings

The locations and dates have yet to be announced – in fact, Wizards doesn’t know exactly when the first Pro Tour will take place, but they say they’re “targeting” early 2023.

Additionally, there will be a fractional invite system which is being called “Adjusted Match Points” that will earn invites through multiple strong performances that fall short of earning a qualification on their own. Wizards provided this list of qualification paths for the Pro Tour:

  • Be one of the top finishers at the previous Regional Championship, with invites passing down as players earn multiple qualifications.
  • Finish with ten or more wins at the previous Pro Tour.
  • Magic: The Gathering Online Champions Showcases
  • Members of the Magic: The Gathering Hall of Fame are invited to one Regional Championship and Pro Tour per season. Those events must be in the same round and cannot be in the same round in which they played in a Regional Championship Qualifier.
  • Players who finish with 39 or more Adjusted Match Points from the previous three Pro Tours (rolling).
  • The Top 4 finishers from Magic World Championship XXVIII (2022) receive invites to all three Pro Tours in the 2022–23 season.

Similar to the World Championships that have been ongoing throughout the tribulations of the 2020s, the World Championship will be the culmination of each season. Wizards says that the World Championship will feature “around 128 players” and an impressive prize pool of $1,000,000.

pro tour philadelphia 2023 standings

Wizards also provided a list of players who will be eligible for Magic’s ultimate Championship:

  • The Top 4 finishers from the 2022 World Championship
  • Players who finish 12–4 or better (or finishes in the Top 8) at any of the season’s three Pro Tours
  • The Top 2 from each of the three MTGO Showcase Events
  • Players to be determined from MTG Arena
  • The Regional Champions
  • The runner-up from Regional Championship events in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
  • The Top 32 ranked players that are not already invited to Magic World Championship XXIX in the 2022–23 Pro Tour 3 Adjusted Match Point standing and all players tied with 32nd place in that standing.

These are the primary details we have about the new Pro Tour structure for now, but you can also find more to read in the Pro Tour details article on Wizards’ website, and on the separate FAQ page . Additionally, this week’s Weekly MTG stream featured Wizards’ Director of Play Programs and Hall-of-Famer Huey Jensen answering questions about the new system – you’ll find a few other interesting pieces of information from that stream farther down.

Most of today’s announcement was unquestionably focused on the tabletop aspect of Organized Play’s future, but that doesn’t mean that digital players will be left out. Wizards was clear that they intend the Pro Tours, Regional Championships and local qualifiers to all be held in person, but they also say that there will be digital paths to Pro Tour qualifications.

According to the announcement, competitive play on both MTG Arena and Magic Online will “both feed into the tabletop path and offer its own journey culminating in the World Championships.” The full scope of what this will look like has not yet been hashed out fully, but Wizards says that they will detail the whole system sometime in late April.

In the meantime, the company did provide the following list of details concerning the digital option for OP:

  • Events on both platforms will feed tabletop events at nearly every level, including the World Championship.
  • Magic: The Gathering Arena Qualifier Weekends will continue, with some exciting twists.
  • Magic: The Gathering Online Showcase events will continue and will feed the World Championship directly!
  • MTG Arena will include new ways to qualify for Qualifier Weekends besides ladder play.
  • The updated MTG Arena qualification path will start with April ladder play and May qualification events! There will be some differences between how that first month plugs into the tabletop path and later months, but we’ll cover those details separately.
  • The digital path will have different eligibility requirements that we’ll outline in April.

Today’s Weekly MTG stream on Twitch was also dedicated to the Organized Play announcement. Wizard’s new Director of Play Programs William “Huey” Jensen sat with Blake Rasmussen to answer some questions from a Discord channel and Twitch , and while most of what they discussed was already covered by the article published this morning, we did collect a few other interesting tidbits from the stream:

  • The Regional Qualifiers will probably play out over two days, but the whole experience is meant to be a three-day affair. There will be other offerings at the events such as last chance qualifiers and some more casual play, such as Commander.
  • The Grand Prix events will not be returning for now, at least in name – the reason given was that Wizards believes the core experiences players want from GPs will be covered in other venues.
  • Concerning the Hall of Fame, Jensen wasn’t able to say anything specific. He did, however, have this to say: “We care, and it’s being worked on.”
  • An invite to the Pro Tour will not include a free plane ticket for the participants.
  • All player’s from this year’s World Championship will be automatically invited to Pro Tour 1.

The whole stream is available to watch as a video-on-demand over at twitch.tv/magic.

There’s a lot to take in from today’s announcements, and so far, the community’s reaction has been largely positive to the return to the Organized Play systems of the past. We still have a lot to learn about exactly how the system is going to be implemented, and Wizards says we will learn more through April.

In the meantime, you can check out the full announcement from Wizards of the Coast here . We’ll be watching carefully for more news about the new Pro Tour and keep you posted. Be sure to also check back here after the Weekly MTG Stream beginning at 2:30pm PST for more.

Atlanta Falcons v Philadelphia Eagles

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Eagles’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson fires back at Micah Parsons criticism: ‘Won a lot more playoff games than you’ - CBS Sports “I don’t know who C.J. Gardner-Johnson thinks he is bro,” Parsons said. “We’ve been dealing with this cat for a while. I think Derek Carr has validated himself way before C.J. has ever done — in the most respectful way. Derek Carr was one the highest-paid quarterback, let’s be real. [...] Gardner-Johnson responded back on social media, nothing how many playoff victories his teams have been a part of compared to Parsons in his career. “@MicahhParsons11 !! You can check my track record and how I over came a lot! Won a lot more playoff games than you too my guy ”

Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is bringing swagger and physicality back to the Eagles’ secondary - PhillyVoice “Wildcat,” Gardner-Johnson said when asked what he saw on the play. “He getting the ball. Downhill. Gametime. Him and me. I’m choosing me every time.” The Saints went for it on the next play, but Zack Baun made another stop for no gain, resulting in a turnover on downs. Four plays later, Saquon Barkley was racing for a 65-yard touchdown. Gardner-Johnson certainly doesn’t lack confidence. “I feel like I’m the hardest-hitting safety in the league,” he said. “I’m just reading my keys and striking what I’m supposed to strike.” Of course, Gardner-Johnson played for the Eagles in 2022, and when he left to play for the Detroit Lions in 2023, the Eagles missed him. They were depleted at times both at safety and at slot corner, and Gardner-Johnson played both positions for the Eagles at a high level. But perhaps even more than his versatility the Eagles may have missed Gardner-Johnson’s swagger and aggressiveness, which was often absent from the Eagles’ defense last season.

Nick Sirianni says he will overtake Eagles play-calling “here and there” - BGN Sirianni was emphatic about his role in the call to run a fake brotherly shove on 4th-and-1, and said that there was really no follow-up needed. It was a pretty cut and drive situation. He made a call that he thought was in the best interest of the football team, and that’s that. The head coach said that he did expect to have two more plays after the failed attempt, with one more play and then a field goal attempt — but that didn’t happen. He was later asked about how often he makes a decision to call a play, and what determines when he does.

Philly, Philly with Jon Marks - YouTube For the first time since 2011, the Philadelphia #phillies are NL East champs! Aaron Nola pitched into the 7th inning, and the offense picked up 11 hits en route to a 6-2 win over the Chicago #cubs. Now, the Phillies will turn their attentions to securing a first round bye, as the Magic Number to lock up, at least, the 2 seed stands at 2. Plus, Brandon Lee Gowton joins the show live in studio at 8:25 to continue the conversation on the #eagles Week 3 win in New Orleans over the #saints.

7 NFL coaches on the hot seat, ranked by their chance to get fired - SB Nation 6. Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia Eagles. It might seem odd to have the coach of a 2-1 team on a list like this one, but Philadelphia’s collapse down the stretch last season had Nick Sirianni entering the 2024 campaign firmly on the hot seat. Producers at FOX Sports had a fairly easy time finding booing Eagles fans during last Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, as Sirianni made a few fourth-down decisions that brought out the boo birds. Philadelphia was stopped on a pair of fourth downs in New Orleans territory, first on a 4th-and-1 situation at the Saints’ 15-yard line late in the first half, and then on a 4th-and-3 situation at the Saints’ 34-yard line to open the third quarter. Ultimately, a spectacular run from Saquon Barkley and an impressive performance from the Eagles’ defense helped Philadelphia to a critical 15-12 win over New Orleans. That win probably bought Sirianni another chunk of time, but the seat does remain warm in Philadelphia.

The First Read: Buy or sell five surprise teams off to hot starts? Risers/sliders from Week 3; MVP rankings - NFL.com 1) SAQUON BARKLEY. The only complaint about Barkley this season has been a critical drop that could have clinched a win in a loss to Atlanta in Week 2. He’s currently averaging 117 rushing yards per game, and he produced 147 ground yards and two scores in Sunday’s win over New Orleans. Barkley’s 65-yard touchdown run gave the Eagles a fourth-quarter lead and his 4-yard TD run gave them the game. There was a lot of talk about Barkley not being worth a big investment when Philadelphia signed him in free agency. He is.

Running Wild - Iggles Blitz That play doesn’t happen if the Eagles go bargain shopping. D’Andre Swift’s long run last year was 43 yards. This year Swift has found that life away from Philly can be brutal. He has 37 carries for 68 yards for the season. Barkley almost matched his season with one run. Yikes. Howie changed his mind on pursuing a RB when the market shifted. Barkley feels like good value right now. He’s not cheap, but you’re getting a difference-making player. He’s absolutely worth the money. The Eagles offense is second in the league in yards. AJ Brown has only played one game. DeVonta Smith missed half of the Saints game. The OL was missing two starters for most of the Saints game. Jalen Hurts and Barkley have made the offense go. There are still some red zone issues to work through, but you have to be excited by the potential this group has shown. It will be fun to see how the offense comes together over the course of the season.

Eagles film review: So far, Jalen Hurts and the offense show improvement against the blitz - Inquirer The most significant difference between Moore’s scheme and the one authored by former offensive coordinator Brian Johnson (along with head coach Nick Sirianni) has been the presence of underneath “hot” options for Hurts when the defense sends more rushers than the offensive line can handle. There have been several examples this season of Hurts diagnosing the free rusher more effectively than he has in the past and getting the ball out of his hands quickly in response. On back-to-back plays in the Eagles’ season-opening win against the Green Bay Packers, Hurts anticipated an unblocked rusher closing in on his blind side and completed passes to A.J. Brown and Saquon Barkley on out-breaking routes to the other side of the field.

What if A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Britain Covey all miss the Eagles-Bucs game? - NBCSP The Eagles didn’t sign Dotson until Aug. 22, so he missed all of training camp. Wilson was here for camp, but he’s a rookie 6th-round pick and still learning. Campbell was here for camp but released with final cuts on Aug. 27 and signed to the Eagles’ practice squad a day later. Ross spent the summer with the Eagles but was also released Aug. 27. He was out of football until the Eagles signed him on Tuesday. Dotson and Ross are former 1st-round picks and Campbell was a 2nd-round pick. Also on the practice squad are Danny Gray, a one-time 3rd-round pick of the 49ers; Kyle Phillips, who caught 23 passes for the Titans last year; and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, an undrafted rookie. And maybe Brown will be able to play Sunday. He’s missed the last two games after suffering a hamstring injury at practice before the Falcons game. If not? Expect lots of Goedert and Barkley, plus whatever the Eagles can cobble together out of everyone else.

Spadaro: Where does Saquon Barkley’s superlative start rank in Eagles history? - PE.com Good things are indeed happening for Barkley, who has had the kind of start that puts him at the top of many outstanding opening three games for Eagles running backs. Let’s take a look at some of the other first three games for Eagles running backs, including some of the seasons for LeSean McCoy, who will be inducted into the franchise’s Hall of Fame in November and who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in four of his six seasons in Philadelphia.

The Best NFL Bets for Week 4 - The Ringer Hurts has improved numbers against the blitz in 2024, with 7.2 yards per attempt and a 72.7 percent completion rate. However, he hasn’t faced a defense that will be nearly as aggressive as Bowles’s will be on Sunday. The only way for the Eagles to be successful offensively is to avoid obvious passing situations that will enable the Bucs to man up and stress Hurts, who has made six turnover-worthy plays when under pressure this year. Expect Philadelphia to use heavier formations with an extra tight end, lean on Saquon Barkley and the run game, and shorten the game with methodical drives. Now that the Eagles’ defensive line has shown some real signs of life in Week 3, including the interior domination and game-wrecking from Jalen Carter, I’m willing to bet on the game staying under 45 or better. Tampa Bay is also one of my favorite teaser legs of the week at +8.5.

2024 NFL offensive line rankings ahead of Week 4 - PFF 5. Philadelphia Eagles (Down 3). Right guard Mekhi Becton and right tackle Lane Johnson both exited Week 3’s game against New Orleans with injuries. They were replaced by Tyler Steen and Fred Johnson, who earned PFF overall grades of 79.6 and 68.9, respectively. Landon Dickerson had a rough outing in Week 3, giving up six pressures — including two sacks — which is tied for the second most in a game over his career. Dickerson is allowing pressure on 10.4% of dropbacks this season. His previous worst rate was 6.4% as a rookie.Best player: Lane Johnson. Although Johnson played just 18 snaps, he was Philadelphia’s highest-graded offensive lineman in Week 3. He did not allow a single pressure on 13 dropbacks and has yet to allow a pressure this season.

Seahawks host 42-year-old Jason Peters - Field Gulls The Seattle Seahawks are hosting a familiar face. Field Yates reported on Tuesday that 42-year-old offensive tackle Jason Peters is being hosted by Seattle. Peters played in eight games for the Seahawks last year, starting in two of them (all at right tackle.) This workout may be somewhat surprising for Seattle as Peters is 42 years old (if signed, Peters would be the oldest active NFL player, with Aaron Rodgers second at 40.)

Jaguars vs Bills: Winners and losers from Week 3 - Big Cat Country Where do you even begin? For a so-called offensive coach and quarterback whisperer, the only thing that has come of Pederson’s time with Lawrence is subpar play and that one time the team won a playoff game after a four-interception half. Looking back on it, was that Los Angeles Chargers’ game much of a win given the circumstances the team put itself in? Pederson at this rate will not make it through the year. It would be shocking to see him ever head coach a team again after wasting assets in Jacksonville. His stubbornness with offensive coordinator and protege Press Taylor got him run out of Philadelphia and will soon see both of them out of Jacksonville. You cannot blame defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen, but you certainly can blame the guy who has been around for three seasons and has yet to do much of anything outside of blow games away and lose. After last night, Pederson has won just four more games than he has lost in his head coaching career. Maybe it is time to forget that miracle Super Bowl run and look at things truthfully.

Film Session: A Closer Look at Jayden Daniels’ First Primetime NFL Game - Hogs Haven Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels’ NFL primetime debut proved to be fun to watch. The dynamic former Heisman trophy-winning signal-caller had a nearly flawless performance in Monday night’s 38-33 win over the Cincinnati Bengals after the national media gave the team zero chance of winning. For Daniels, it was a chance to prove to a national audience that he’s more than just another mobile quarterback trying to cross over to the NFL game. His initial introduction was a success, as you can literally see his game growing with every snap.

5 points: Observations from the Cowboys loss in Week 3 - Blogging The Boys First Point: The offensive line struggles against Baltimore. There is enough blame from Sunday’s loss for everyone sharing a piece of it. Dak Prescott finished the game strong but was not without fault for some of the errors in the first half. However, Prescott was under duress from the Ravens’ pass rush and didn’t seem to trust his pass protection. Tyler Smith graded out as one of the better players on offense, but the entire offensive line had their turnstile moments. Tyler Guyton, Smith, Cooper Beebe, Zack Martin, and Terence Steele allowed at least two pressures each. Guyton showed slight improvement from his performance against the Saints but still gave up a sack for a second consecutive week and had his share of rookie mistakes. The Cowboys have been having trouble getting their running game going, partly because of the rotating running backs. A lack of push from the offensive line didn’t leave the backs enough room to run either. For the first time this season, none of the linemen received a Pro Football Focus run-blocking grade higher than 62.

The most confusing team of the season is _______? - ESPN+ Graziano: “At Houston” is a tough place to start a turnaround! A short-week road game coming off another road game is the last thing the Jaguars need. Right now, they’re a disaster. And I agree, Pederson is a strong candidate for in-season hot seat status if things don’t start looking better. How about the Dallas Cowboys for this one? Are they simply this bad on defense? Is it coaching or personnel? I would think they get right Thursday night against the Giants, but if they don’t there’s going to be panic in the streets. And even if they do, are they trustworthy enough to where they can carry some momentum into October? The Eagles are weathering their early season issues a lot better than the Cowboys, and if quarterback Jayden Daniels is what we saw Monday, the Commanders could be a factor in that division as well. The Cowboys need to get something figured out quickly.

Giants-Cowboys injury report: Dru Phillips, Adoree’ Jackson might be out Thursday night - Big Blue View The New York Giants’ Tuesday injury report provided a mix of good and bad news at the cornerback position in advance of Thursday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. The — possible — good news? Cornerback Nick McCloud, who has missed two games with a knee injury, might be able to play on Thursday. “That’s my hope,” head coach Brian Daboll said on Tuesday. The — probable — bad news? It looks like starting slot cornerback Dru Phillips and backup outside cornerback Adoree’ Jackson are going to be unavailable due to calf injuries sustained Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Both were listed as ‘Did not practice’ as the Giants held a walkthrough.

Ken Mah Blows Out BAM Pro Tour, Winning by More Than 12 Pounds at Thermalito

Colby pearson prevails as inaugural angler of the year.

By Jody Only 9/23/2024

pro tour philadelphia 2023 standings

OROVILLE, Calif.  – The final day of the season-ending bass battle of the BAM Pro Tour concluded today as Ken Mah of Elk Grove, Calif.  cruised to a blowout win at the Thermalito Afterbay with a five fish limit that tipped the scales at 29.82, gapping the runner-up by more than 12-pounds. Mah’s effort earned a $12,073 payday.

“Today was crazy,” said Mah reflecting on his second major victory at the Oroville fishery. “I’m humbled, I’m blessed, and I’m thankful. It’s so hard to win even one of these multi-day events. It’s crazy to win anywhere, even once, but to win here again – I’m speechless.”

Mah qualified for the event’s Championship Sunday with the second heaviest weight at 32.69, accumulated over the first two days of fishing. Blasting off with a reset of the leaderboard to zero, the top-10 launched for their last limit to determine the winner. Fish management was an integral part of Mah’s strategy.

“The first day I fished a Chatter with a Big Bite Bait’s Kamikaze Swimon trailer,” he said.  “It wasn’t easy, but I caught ‘em fairly early and once I got to my target weight, I was able to fish loose.”

A finicky bite forced Mah to adjust for his Clear Lake-sized bag on Day Three. He credited the River2Sea Phat Mat Daddy frog and a flippin’ stick for the bigs.

“I glued a 1-ounce weight and 80-pound Sunline braid on a 7’11” Loomis flippin’ stick to my hand and went to work,” he said.

His flippin’ plastics included both a YoMama and College Craw from Big Bite Baits and a Missile Baits Craw Father . A specific, slow retrieve that included a subtle shake after bottom contact was imperative for Mah.

O’Shinn Flipped for Five

Auburn, Calif. pro Bill O’Shinn qualified for the final day by a keeper count of 12 scorable bass that put him 8 th place, with his heaviest limits giving him a two-day total of 20.56 or an average of 10-pounds a day. For Championship Sunday, he upped that to five fish for 17.10 to secure 2 nd place and pocket a payout of $5,644.

“Today was slow,” O’Shinn shared. “I was getting one fish every hour or two. I only got five or six bites all day, but mid-day, I figured out something else about where they were positioning and I was able to get a few key bites, which gave me the bag that catapulted me into 2 nd .

Every fish catch for O’Shinn came on a flippin’ stick.

“I flipped a Pro Point Lures The Bug ,” he revealed. “It has got little tentacles like a Twin Tail Grub , but it is compact enough to get into the thick stuff. It has good action and with a 1¼ ounce weight , I was getting way back in there and that seemed to work.”

O’Shinn mentioned his biggest challenge was location – finding fish that hadn’t been pressured over the course of the tournament.

“Staying mentally sound through that was important,” he concluded.

Monroe’s Water Turned Cold

Fishing shallow, Ish Monroe from Oakdale, Calif. led the event for each of the first two days of competition by both weight and keepers. His two-day total of 41.00, left him more than five-pounds above his nearest competitor. With no leaderboard carryover to Championship Sunday, Monroe’s final standing locked in him 3 rd with 16.79 to bank $4,715.

“It was a good tournament, leading the first two days with 20 pounds,” Monroe said. “Anytime you have a tournament like that, it’s a great event. The best thing was being able to catch ‘em froggin’ and flippin’ – especially when you’re catching good ones doing it.”

Monroe felt his biggest challenge was the need to adjust to the venue’s fluctuating water temperature.

“Today I had water coming in that was a little bit colder, and I knew I should run a little further away, but I didn’t because I felt like the area that I had didn’t get as much pressure like the warmer water,” he said.

Over the course of the three days, Monroe put two presentations to use.

“I threw my (River2Sea) Phat Mat Daddy frog for the first day, and then mixed in Missile Baits the next day, he said. “Today it was all Missile, except one frog fish that didn’t weigh.”

Monroe tied his frog to Daiwa’s 70-pound Samurai braided line spooled to a 7.1:1 Daiwa Zillion reel paired to a Daiwa Tatula Elite Series 7’4’ frog rod . He flipped with a Daiwa Tatula Elite Series Ish Monroe 8’ Punching/Flippin’ rod with a Daiwa 7.1:1 Pitch/Flip reel with the same Daiwa Samurai braid .

His flip rig held a 5/0 River2Sea New Jack Flippin’ Hook, a punch stop and a 1-ounce Anglers King tungsten weight . “The weigh is exclusively available at Fisherman’s Warehouse,” added Monroe.

Pearson Claims Angler of the Year Title

Going into the final BAM Pro Tour event of 2024, Colby Pearson of Central Point, Ore was leading the Angler of the Year (AOY) points race. Monroe was hot his heels as a mere seven points separated the anglers. The honor was up in the air all the way into the final day of the Thermalito competition.

“If Ish would’ve won (Thermalito) we would’ve tied for AOY, unless I got 9 th or better,” said Pearson. “I had four top-10s and the fact that there even was any Angler of the Year race after four top-10’s is amazing, in itself. So, props to Ish. We have been duking it out all year and I couldn’t have been going against a better guy.”

With Thermalito as a bookend on the BAM Pro Tour 2024 schedule, Pearson was thankful to finish out the year strong.

“This place was a thorn in my side,” he said. “Coming from Oregon, we don’t punch for bass, and I knew I was far out of my element. So, I was a little nervous coming in. I figured I would be holding on for dear life; but I knew if I got another top-10, it would put a little bit of pressure on Ish.”

Pearson’s four top-10’s included back-to-back wins at Lake Martinez and Lake Almanor to start BAM’s season.

“Martinez was my first major win, exclaimed Pearson. This year has been amazing, and I can’t wait for next year and the BAM Super 60,”

Note: BAM Pro Tour anglers are ranked in Pro Tour events by both the heaviest five fish limit (Weight) and numbers of scorable bass caught (Keepers).

First place is held by the angler with the five heaviest bass and second place is the highest keeper count. The standings then continue to alternate by weight/keepers.

Anglers ranked by weight on the leaderboard are denoted with an asterisk.

Anglers add to both of their Day One rankings on Day Two as an accumulated two-day total. Once both days are tallied, the field is cut to the top-10, all results are zero-ed out and the final 10 anglers fish for the five heaviest bass on Day Three to determine the champion.
