The Malaysian hospitality industry took a significant step towards sustainable tourism with the launch of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) certification for hotels and resorts. This pioneering initiative is a collaborative effort between SGS, the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) and SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED.

On June 14, 2024, all parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and officially launched the ESG certification. Surya Kumar, Undersecretary of the Tourism Licensing and Enforcement Division from The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) attended the event as the guest of honor.

Officially Supported by MOTAC

Officially supported by MOTAC, ESG Certification for Malaysian Hotels & Resorts aims to provide clear guidelines and a comprehensive, holistic and measurable checklist for hotels and resorts in Malaysia. The certification will serve as the industry's benchmark, following the nation's 2030 vision for sustainable tourism. By adopting these standards, hotels and resorts can ensure they operate in an environmentally responsible, socially equitable and well-governed manner.

Witnesses at the back (from left to right): Kenny Looi from SGS in Malaysia, Isaac Raj from MAH and Susie Peter from SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED.

Pathways to ESG certification

There are a few steps to achieve and maintain ESG certification specifically designed for the Malaysian hospitality industry:

  • Engagement and commitment Hotels and resorts begin their journey towards ESG certification by participating in Basic ESG Training from SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED. This initial step introduces the requirements of certification and provides essential knowledge of ESG principles. By engaging in this training, establishments can better understand the expectations involved in pursuing the certification, allowing them to assess their level of commitment and readiness for the process.
  • Pre-assessment and gap analysis Following training, hotels and resorts undergo a pre-assessment and gap analysis conducted by SGS. This comprehensive process evaluates the establishment's current practices and performance against the established ESG framework, identifying areas needed for improvement.
  • Implementation Based on the findings of the gap analysis, SAIMATRIX INTERGRATED facilitates hotels and resorts to develop and implement action plans to address identified gaps and enhance their performance in key ESG areas. These action plans are tailored to the specific needs and priorities of each establishment, ensuring targeted and effective improvements.
  • Reporting Once the necessary improvements have been made, hotels and resorts undergo a rigorous certification audit conducted by SGS. This audit evaluates the establishment's adherence to the ESG framework and assesses its eligibility for certification.
  • ESG certification award Upon successful completion of the audit process and verification of compliance with ESG standards, hotels and resorts are awarded ESG certification. This prestigious certification serves as a testament to their dedication to sustainable practices and responsible tourism.
  • Certification renewals To maintain certification status, hotels and resorts undergo yearly renewals. This ensures that certified establishments continue to uphold ESG standards and remain committed to sustainability in the long term.

Our expertise in ESG

As the appointed certification body, SGS provides comprehensive services including GAP analysis, auditing and certification. Our rigorous standards and thorough evaluation processes ensure that hotels and resorts meet the highest levels of environmental, social and governance criteria. Our expertise in conducting detailed assessments and providing actionable feedback is critical in helping establishments achieve and maintain ESG compliance.

A distinguished infrastructure is important for economy, tourism: Minister

minister for tourism

KUWAIT CITY, June 27: Dr. Noura Al-Mashaan, Minister of Public Works and Minister of State for Municipal Affairs, underscored the significance of inter-ministry cooperation in realizing Kuwait’s ambitious vision for distinguished infrastructure and bolstering the nation’s economic and tourism potential. This vision aims to promote sustainable and comprehensive development across various sectors, thereby enhancing the well-being and satisfaction of citizens.

In a recent meeting, Dr. Al-Mashaan met with Omar Al-Omar, Minister of Trade and Industry and Minister of State for Communications, and Sheikh Mohammed Al-Salman, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Tourism Projects Company, to discuss ways to strengthen tripartite cooperation. Their discussions focused on supporting and developing projects that enrich Kuwait’s cultural, social, and tourism landscapes.

Bassan Sahafi noted that the meeting provided an opportunity for exchanging views and experiences on innovative projects serving multiple sectors, with a special emphasis on “food trucks,” also known as “mobile restaurant trucks.” The dialogue explored mechanisms for organizing and developing the food truck sector, strategically allocating locations that align with Kuwait’s urban and cultural image, and improving the seafront with well-planned walkways and seating areas.

Plans to ensure the provision of high-quality services, in line with the country’s aesthetic standards, were also highlighted. These initiatives aim to offer unique cultural and tourism experiences for both visitors and residents.

The meeting emphasized the importance of cooperation among the three ministries and relevant authorities to achieve the desired goals and facilitate procedures that encourage entrepreneurs and investors. This collaboration is seen as pivotal in elevating Kuwait’s aesthetic appeal and positioning it as a leading cultural and tourism destination regionally and globally.

Dr. Al-Mashaan expressed her gratitude to Minister Omar Al-Omar for the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s role in issuing and reviewing food truck licenses. The ministry’s efforts in organizing these licenses to meet the population’s needs, along with updating regulations to ensure compliance with health, environmental, and quality standards, were particularly appreciated.

By fostering such cooperative efforts, Kuwait aims to strengthen its tourism sector and provide high-quality services that meet the needs and aspirations of all, setting a model for organizing and developing mobile tourism and commercial projects.

MINISTRY OF TOURISM TO CONDUCT AN ECONOMIC IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF THE ANNUAL ST. KITTS MUSIC FESTIVAL TO ENSURE ITS SUSTAINABILITY

SKNISEditor

Hon. Marsha Henderson

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, June 27, 2024 (SKNIS) – Following the staging of the 26 th edition this year, the Ministry of Tourism intends to undertake a comprehensive Economic Impact Assessment of the annual St. Kitts Music Festival to determine whether necessary changes are needed to ensure its sustainability. This will include an in-depth look at the current three-night model.

Minister with responsibility for the music festival, the Honourable Marsha Henderson, said such an assessment is critically needed if the product is to remain competitive and attractive to patrons, given the different other festivities in neighbouring islands.

“The festivals in the region have different models and so for us to be able to compete we have to look to see whether this model is in fact sustainable. If you look at the amounts we spend on the music festival it’s almost like $10 million and so we need to see if this is sustainable when we consider the Economic Impact Assessment and how we can continue to change the model to make sure that the festival is sustainable as well,” Minister Henderson said during her appearance on the June 26, 2024, edition of the radio and television programme, InFocus .

It is anticipated that this crucial assessment will be completed by October 2024, in line with the commencement of the Government’s annual Budgetary process.

Minister Henderson added, “The Economic Impact Assessment, all of the other meetings that we are going to do, we intend to do some retreat and observations of other festivals and see how we can tweak ours to make sure that this festival is sustainable.”

The assessment will be led by Crest Analytics, working alongside the relevant stakeholders here in St. Kitts and Nevis. The minister also assured that public feedback will play an important role in their decision-making as well.

Irrespective of the outcome of the planned assessment, Minister Henderson commented that the St. Kitts Music Festival remains an important investment for the Federation, and one that has always accomplished what it was established to do—market the destination to the world.

“Last year for example, we received so much publicity out of the music festival, not just from the artistes but also from the media houses, people got to know about St. Kitts from all the good reviews,” the minister said, noting that the patrons who visit for the music festival are treated to the full cultural experience that the destination is renowned for.
