The Globetrotting Teacher

Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Travel Hacking: Getting Started

Are you traveling again?! How can you afford to travel so much?!

I’m asked these questions all the time and you can make it so people start asking you these same questions, too!

The truth is I’m not rich (thus the blog title The Globetrotting  Teacher ). I haven’t done anything that someone else couldn’t do and I’m certainly not breaking any rules. Simply put. I make my money work for me by earning miles and points for travel, a.k.a. travel hacking.

But, scratch the surface just a bit and you begin to see just how much there is to learn. So, let’s get started.

Travel hacking or award travel is the skill of using miles and points to earn free or nearly free travel.

There are a few main components that you’ll need to understand to effectively earn and use points and miles to redeem for award flights and hotel nights.

  • Understanding Credit Scores, Credit Cards , & the Different Types of Points and Miles
  • How to Set Up and Use Your Bills and Everyday Spending to Earn Points and Miles
  • Learning to Redeem your Points and Miles for Maximum Value

There’s a lot to unpack within each of these bullets, which is why I’ve put together my FREE Travel Hacking Basics Course.

You’re going to need to dedicate time and effort to learn as much as you can about points and miles. So, why have this process take any longer than it needs to take?

This work will pay off because once feel the thrill of booking a flight with miles, paying only a few dollars for taxes, you’ll be hooked.

The key, though, is getting started.

Enroll now in my FREE Travel Hacking Basics course by clicking the button below.

travel hacking academy

I’ve put everything you need to get started in one place and sequenced each lesson logically to help you build a solid points and miles foundation…without making the classic beginner mistakes.

Getting started with travel hacking feels overwhelming.

It involves complicated and important things like credit cards, money, and credit scores. You work hard for these things and don’t want anything to harm them. Skepticism and even feeling as if you’re breaking the rules  also get in the way and create yet another psychological obstacle to getting started.

It’s easy to think it’s not worth it.

What will you learn in Travel Hacking Basics?

There are 5 sections to this beginner points and miles course.

  • Welcome – Get access to the Facebook Group, Travel Hacking Study Hall + downloadable cheat sheets to help you begin.
  • Understanding Credit Scores – Detailed lessons to help you understand the factors used to calculate your credit score, dispel myths about credit cards, and improve your credit score.
  • Credit Cards, Points, and Miles – Dive into the different types of travel reward points and miles and the cards that earn them. We’ll go over important bank rules, which credit cards to start with, and how to keep it all organized.
  • Earning Points and Miles – Learn how to meet credit card minimum spends and maximize every dollar you spend on your bills and expenses to earn the most travel rewards points and miles possible.
  • Using Points and Miles – Find out must-know redemption rules and principles, as well as see how to search and redeem your points and miles for the best value through guided lessons and video tutorials.

At the end of the course, I go over how to put all of what you learned into action and what your next steps should be.

Think of Destination on your Bucket List…

Complete this sentence.

I want to travel hack because I want to go to [enter destination] for [enter reason] in [enter date and year]. Without travel hacking, it would cost me [enter cost].

For example, you might say:

I want to travel hack because I want to go to Paris and Rome for my 10th wedding anniversary next June. Without travel hacking, it would cost me over $5,000.

The beauty of points and miles is you don’t have to save forever to take that BIG trip.

Miles and points can make even the dreamiest destinations possible, seated in premium class seats, no teacher like me could ever afford without points and miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is this course for?

Travel Hacking Basics is for anyone living in the United States who has the ability to apply for travel rewards credit cards and use them responsibly.

If you’re in another country, like Canada or the U.K, some of the lessons in the “Use Your Points and Miles” section will be the same or similar. However, the credit card offers and perks vary by country.

  • Do I need a good credit score to get started with points and miles?

Most travel rewards credit cards require a good to excellent credit score. To get started, you should have a credit score >700.

  • Is it really worth it to earn points and miles?

Clearly, I’m biased. But, not for any other reason than I have successfully used points and miles to travel around the world from Europe to Asia , Africa , and South America .

I never would have imagined years ago that I would have the ability to travel wherever I wanted just by unleashing the power of my everyday bills and spending.

79. Pam's African Safari That Didn't Happen

Welcome back to another episode of Points Talk with the Travel Mom Squad, where today’s travel tale is all about adaptability and adventure! One of the most anticipated trips of the year was Pam’s African safari in the majestic Maasai Mara, complete with luxurious stays and game drives—all meticulously planned using points. Pam was ready to celebrate her birthday surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Kenya, but nature had other plans…hit play to hear the full story, or keep reading!  Just as the fun got started with a pre-safari stay in Mauritius, indulging in the island’s beauty, an unexpected email turned everything upside down. The safari was abruptly canceled leaving her with two options: scramble or salvage the trip. Thanks to points and miles, she chose not just to salvage, but turn it into an opportunity and adventure of a lifetime!  Transforming potential disappointment into a new story, she pivoted, and points and miles came to the rescue, allowing her to reshape her itinerary without a hitch.  In Sardinia, Pam swapped what would have been safari jeeps for coastal views and Italian cuisine. Each unexpected twist brought new sights and experiences—from luxurious hotels to local culture, proving that sometimes the best stories come from the unplanned. Through it all, the journey was smoothed over by the flexibility that comes with using points and miles—proving invaluable in turning what could have been a major travel fail into an array of unforgettable moments! So, whether you find yourself facing canceled flights, unexpected weather, or last-minute changes, remember, with the right mindset and a good stash of points, you can turn any travel mishap into a new adventure. 75. Chase Sapphire Smackdown: Preferred vs Reserve – Which Card Wins Your Wallet?

Ever wonder whether the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Chase Sapphire Reserve is the right card for you? Well, today we're diving deep into both to help you figure out which card might fit your wallet better. Hey, we're the Travel Mom Squad (Pam, Jess, and Alex), and in today’s chat, we're breaking down everything you need to know about these two popular cards from Chase. From the nitty-gritty of their benefits to the best ways to utilize their perks, we've got you covered. The Chase Sapphire Preferred is our go-to recommendation for those new to the points game. With a lower annual fee and solid rewards, it’s a powerhouse for anyone starting out.  On the flip side, the Chase Sapphire Reserve is like the Preferred’s big sibling, with a heftier fee but a ton of premium perks. Think $300 travel credit that you can use for just about anything travel-related, from taxis to flights, which makes its higher fee more palatable.  Both cards have their merits, and the best one for you depends heavily on how much you travel and what kinds of benefits you value most. If you're a frequent traveler who loves splurging on travel and dining, the Reserve might be up your alley. But if you're just dipping your toes into the world of travel rewards, the Preferred might be a better fit. So, are you ready to pick a card that aligns with your travel aspirations and spending habits? Join us as we delve into the details, share our personal experiences, and maybe, just maybe, help you decide which card will earn a spot in your wallet. I have learned so much!

I have learned so much from listening to this podcast. They give so much info and it is easy to relate to. I’m excited to start traveling more this year on points. I already have a couple big trips planned that I never thought was possible!

Great podcast but…..

This is a great podcast. Very valuable information and topics which really relate to the beginner-intermediate points travel enthusiast. But…. The latest episode worries me a bit because I have heard/seen too many podcasts in this genre turn to the infomercial format to promote the “paid classes” they offer. It starts innocently enough by mentioning the class each episode. Then, before you know it, a third or more of the podcasts (now more like infomercials) released are interviews with people who took the paid class. They spend most of the episode recounting all the things these paid classes offer and so much less time spent on providing actual information on travel points and strategies for the listener. Yes, this latest episode is a departure from the normal, usually informative format and I hope it it an anomaly. Please don’t become the next “Families Fly Free Podcast” of weekly infomercial fame. Thank you and hopes for continued good work ahead for you ladies.

So much valuable information

I discovered this podcast early this year and have learned so much valuable information about traveling on points and miles. Thanks to all the tips I’ve learned, my families hotels for our 3 week road-trip this summer are completely covered by points and I have enough points saved to book Hawaii for next summer as soon as I am able to book. Thank you so much, ladies for all your hard work!

Points Academy: Travel Hacking for Beginners

travel hacking academy

In just 6 years, I've hacked over $200,000 in free travel and visited 50+ destinations across 4 continents for free. How did I do it?

I first learned about travel hacking in college, where I heard people talking about using points to book free vacations. Who doesn't want free travel?

Naturally, I started researching and stumbled upon travel blogs with copious amounts of info on the topic. And I got really confused and overwhelmed. So. Much. Noise.

Truth is, these travel blogs are written for experienced travel hackers. People who have been doing it for a while. It's not an effective way for beginners to learn travel hacking.

That's why I created Points Academy.

In this video course, i will teach you step-by-step how to travel for free using points, and book your first free vacation in under 12 months., no extra spending, no ruining your credit score..

So... Are you a US citizen or resident?

Do you want to travel for free every year?

Do you want to visit amazing destinations without worrying about budget?

Want a free upgrade to first class? The only hack is your wallet. | Cruising Altitude

travel hacking academy

  • Don't expect to get a free upgrade anymore.
  • Airlines have gotten smarter about pricing their premium cabins.
  • You can pay for an upgrade, use miles or buy extra legroom seating.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, and no matter what the internet may try to tell you, there’s also basically no such thing as a free upgrade on a plane anymore.

You can’t “hack” your way into the pointy end of the plane by wearing a collared shirt or flirting with your flight attendant . You’re not going to get a lie-flat bed by asking nicely at the gate, and no one is popping Dom Perignon as a predeparture beverage for you just because you think you have a strategic check-in time.

“It’s just not going to happen,” Brett Snyder, author of the blog Cranky Flier and owner of the travel agency Cranky Concierge, told me.

Part of the problem is airplanes are just fuller now than they used to be, and airlines have gotten smarter about pricing their seats.

“First class fares used to be so high that people wouldn’t buy them, and instead you just had massive numbers of elite upgrades and all different sorts of people sitting up there that weren’t paying for it, they were just getting it as a perk,” Snyder said. “At some point, the airlines realized, if we start pricing this as a fare upsell, we can get people to actually pay for these seats. Now you have a lot fewer seats that are available for an upgrade because people are buying.”

As someone who has paid cash more than once to upgrade, I can vouch for this. Suppose the price is reasonable and I’m feeling generous to myself at the check-in counter. In that case, I’ll happily spend the extra money to guarantee myself a more comfortable seat, especially on a long flight.

It cuts the other way, too. I once flew overnight from New York to Paris and was willing to spend a few hundred dollars to upgrade myself to a lie-flat seat at the gate if the option was available. The airline quoted me almost $1,000 to upgrade, and the seats wound up occupied by non-paying passengers who worked for the airline instead. From the perspective of the airline’s bottom line and my own comfort, that was a bad pricing decision.

“If people had too much ability to upgrade travelers at the gate (for free) or whatever it was, that was likely something that was leaving money on the table for them,” Snyder said.

So, how can you get upgraded? There are no hacks, but here’s my advice.

“The best way to get a premium seat is to pay for it. This is not rocket science, this is kind of basic,” Snyder told me. “That’s what it comes down to. The majority of seats and the majority of people who sit in the front cabins are paying for it. That’s the most surefire way to make sure you’re going to get it.”

You just can’t count on getting an upgrade when so many people are willing and able to pay for the luxury. Airlines are also pricing their premium cabins more liberally now. Business travel still has not fully bounced back to its pre-pandemic levels, but there’s been strong and steady demand in the premium leisure segment, and airlines have taken note. They’ve priced things to entice people to buy up during their personal travel, even when their company isn’t footing the bill.

You can, of course, pay right at the beginning of your booking by buying a premium ticket when you first get your flights, but you should also keep an eye on cash upgrade offers right up until departure time. You never know what the airline revenue management gods will make available.

Pay (but differently)

“But Zach,” I hear you saying, “I’m an ultra-elite frequent flyer, and I get free upgrades all the time.”

To which I say: No, you don’t.

You may not be paying out of pocket for those upgrade perks at the gate, but that doesn’t mean you’re not paying for them at all. To get frequent flyer status, you need to spend a bunch of money with the airline or an even bigger bunch of money on one of its co-branded credit cards, which likely also has a hefty annual fee.

Cruising Altitude: Don't bother with an airline loyalty program if you're this traveler.

One way or the other, you’re paying for that upgrade, even if it’s not directly.

Frequent flyers also usually have lots of loyalty points, which, again, they have to pay to earn, but those points or miles can be useful for securing upgrades.

“You can also use miles to upgrade, even if you don’t have status,” Snyder said. In addition to cash upgrades, airlines often let you redeem miles for buy-ups to premium cabins.

Pay (but less)

Maybe you’ve decided it’s just too much effort or too financially taxing to upgrade yourself to business class, and that’s OK. You have other options.

“You can always pay for extra legroom seating, but depending on the airline, that can be a very modest upsell,” Snyder said.

It’s usually not as expensive to upgrade from a regular economy seat to an extra-legroom economy seat, and if all you care about is a little more knee space, this can be a good option.

“Don’t expect that you’re going to be able to game the system and find this magical loophole. It’s just not going to happen. So figure out what you’re OK with and make sure you have that arrangement before you get to the airport,” Snyder said. “If you’re booking something you absolutely cannot tolerate – you’re 7 feet tall and book coach on Spirit, don’t do that.”

If you’re determined not to pay for anything above the lowest economy fare, you can always pray for an empty adjacent seat.

Travel expert shares '3-3-3' hack that people are branding a 'game changer'

Travel expert shares '3-3-3' hack that people are branding a 'game changer'

The genius packing trick could 'easily' last you 'five or six days'.

Rhiannon Ingle

We're now in June and I'm sure many of us are looking forward to all our upcoming summer holidays this year.

Whether you're planning on living it up in Ibiza or set to sail the seas on a once-in-a-lifetime cruise , it's clear that there's one thing most of us dread when it comes to holiday prepping.

So, to help make the process a little easier, one travel expert has shared her

'3-3-3' hack that people are hailing as a total 'game changer'.

The '3-3-3' suitcase packing hack has been hailed as being a total 'game changer'. (SolStock / Getty Images)

Patrice J. Williams, an 'affordable lifestyle ' expert explained exactly what you should be doing to pack your bags more efficiently on an appearance of Studio 1A.

"It's the concept of mixing and matching your wardrobe," she began, "[it] helps you pack smarter."

In short, you need to pick out three tops, bottoms and shoes that could all work together in any given combination.

"You're not overpacking," Patrice continued, "you're mixing and matching."

She also added that the 3-3-3 packing hack could 'easily' last you 'five or six days'.

Gemma explained: "Here's how I use the 3-3-3 method to create multiple different outfits using three tops, three bottoms, three shoes, three tops."

So, her three tops were a white t-shirt, a striped shirt and neutral jumper.

Bottoms-wise, Gemma opted for a black miniskirt, neutral trousers and white-washed denim jeans.

And, lastly, the shoes included black knee high boots, a neutral pair of Adidas Spezial trainers and black loafers.

"Let's see how many outfits I can put together," she finished up before showing cut-away clips of a whopping 14 outfits in total.

"I could go on," Gemma concluded the short clip before adding: "This is proof that a capsule wardrobe really does work."

She captioned the video: "Using the 3-3-3 method to create multiple outfits with 3 tops, 3 bottoms and 3 pairs of shoes. This is proof that a capsule wardrobe really does work and is worth investing in."

Viewers clearly couldn't wait to share their praise for the nifty little trick with one TikTok user writing: "This is such a game changer for traveling!"

A second chirped: "This is perfecto for traveling!"

"Love a good capsule wardrobe," penned a third, "working on mine now!"

"What a brilliant idea! Bookmarked for my next trip!" gushed a fourth while a fifth quipped: "What is this wizardry!"

"Okay you convinced me with this, I'm gonna try," added a final TikTok user.

TikTok hack warning as celebs and brands targeted in cyberattack

T he security team at TikTok claims to be fixing a bug that let hackers attack a number of well-known brand and celebrity accounts on the video app, including those of Sony, CNN , and Paris Hilton .

It appears that malware was sent over TikTok 's direct messages as part of the malicious attempt, which was previously reported by Forbes . This could have impacted the account owners' access to their TikTok profiles.

Since none of the impacted accounts had started to publish anything, the hackers' intentions were not immediately apparent. In certain instances, TikTok stepped in to prevent the accounts from being compromised even though they were the hackers' aim.

It is suggested for the time being, you should refrain from opening any direct messages you get if you have downloaded TikTok to your phone.

Semafor claims that a hacker gained access to CNN's account last week, forcing the account to be pulled offline for a few days.

The news outlet declared that it was collaborating with TikTok on extra security protocols to guarantee the account's safety in the coming days, particularly over the US presidential elections.

Spokesperson Alex Haurek told Forbes : "Our security team is aware of a potential exploit targeting a number of brand and celebrity accounts. We have taken measures to stop this attack and prevent it from happening in the future. We're working directly with affected account owners to restore access, if needed."

Haurek went on to say that the business had discovered "very small" numbers of compromised accounts, but he would not provide an exact figure or details about how TikTok was safeguarding any exposed accounts.

This isn’t TikTok’s first case with hacking. Over the past couple years, TikTok has seen numerous hacks.

In the summer of 2023, TikTok revealed that the company's use of unreliable SMS networks for two-factor authentication had resulted in the breach of up to 700,000 accounts in Turkey . The incident happened not long before Turkey's hotly disputed presidential polls.

Marketing vs. reality—What we can learn from the Ashley Madison hack

travel hacking academy

The new Netflix documentary “Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal” took us behind the scenes of one of the most infamous data breaches in history.

Like a thriller novel come to life, the Ashley Madison hack story had everything: a controversial product, high stakes, and mysterious hackers who were never caught.

Back in 2015, more than 30 million users of the dating site suddenly found out their most well-kept secrets were no longer safe. Imagine the surprise of the users waking up to discover their private data splashed across the web for anyone to see. After all, the brand promised utmost confidentiality and data security.  Why did this happen?

“Life is short. Have an affair.” Their famous tagline promised a safe space for married people to have affairs. Instead, reports indicate that they operated more like an unsecure centralized collection of personal information.

When hackers breached Ashley Madison's databases, it wasn't just names and email addresses that were exposed—payment details, physical descriptions, and even those “secret” fantasies were out in the open. The Netflix documentary gave us a peek at a few of the many lives that were affected.

The power of a strong brand

Ashley Madison sold an image: a titillating, clandestine adventure protected by a veil of secrecy. The brand was built on the promise of discretion and confidentiality. As the former employees of the company explained in the docuseries, the site was marketed as a way to enjoy the thrill of a private affair—without their partner knowing about it.

For many users, this promise was worth the cost of admission. The site still has a pay-to-play charging structure, where male users buy credits to be able to message their matches. (Yes, the site is alive and thriving .)

What lies behind the marketing

So, how did Ashley Madison manage to convince millions of people their secrets were safe? The short answer is a strong, exciting brand. And it did help that they touted robust security and ironclad confidentiality.

However, things were not as good as they seemed. The warning signs were there—vague security assurances, hidden fees for data deletion , and a business model that prioritized profits over privacy.

The red flags were justified. For example, they had many odd-looking safety badges on the site claiming they were trusted and secure—they were all fake. Another red flag was charging their users extra to delete their own data, which we believe to be a sketchy practice in and on itself. Making matters worse, it turned out that the service was nonexistent.

It’s important to be wary of any product or service that makes a lot of promises without detailing how they deliver it. Real security starts with transparency and a proven track record, not just glossy ads.

What to look for when signing up to a dating service

When diving into the world of online dating, a bit of caution goes a long way. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and secure:

  • Check the site’s privacy policy. Ensure the service has a clear, comprehensive privacy policy that explains how your data will be used and protected.
  • Look for HTTPS. Always use sites with HTTPS in their web address. This means the site has at least a basic level of encryption.
  • Use two-factor authentication. Opt for services that offer two-factor authentication (2FA). This adds an extra layer of security.
  • Use unique passwords. Never reuse passwords. Use a unique, strong password for each dating site and consider using a password manager.
  • Read reviews. Look up reviews and news about the site. If there have been security issues in the past, you'll likely find warnings from other users.
  • Limit personal information. Be cautious about the amount of personal information you share. Only provide what's necessary and avoid linking to other social media accounts. Be careful with what you share on the site as in real-life.
  • Keep an eye out for scammers. Dating scams have become fairly common . Don’t ignore any red flags, such as asking for money or avoiding video calls.

Dating smart

Dating sometimes makes us feel a bit vulnerable at first—but that should just be limited to the getting-to-know-the–person part, not the online-safety part. Dating should be fun, exciting, and most importantly, safe .

The Ashley Madison hack was a wake-up call for everyone about the importance of digital security. By staying informed and vigilant, you can enjoy the online dating scene without compromising your privacy. Remember, your secrets deserve to stay secret, and with the right precautions, they can.

Ashley Madison is a trademark of Ruby Life, Inc. Netflix is a trademark of Netflix, Inc.
