Julia Roberts and George Clooney are embarking on a new adventure with their Ticket to Paradise . The Ocean’s Eleven alums are back and fabulously so in the all-new tropical rom-com, playing a divorced couple at odds. Ticket to Paradise is directed by Oliver Parker, who is known for previously writing and directing Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again . Parker is also the writer of the movie, along with Daniel Pipski . Roberts and Clooney also serve as producers on the movie, along with Tim Bevans , Eric Fellner , and others.

Ticket to Paradise was originally scheduled to be released in the United States on September 30, 2022, but got postponed. Now, the movie is releasing in theaters across the United States on October 21, 2022. It will release in Australia on September 15, 2022, and in the UK on September 16, 2022. As a Universal Pictures film, Ticket to Paradise is also expected to be available for streaming on Peacock , 45 days after the theatrical premiere.

Universal Pictures released the official trailer for Ticket to Paradise in June 2022 and from the first look, it appears gorgeous and colorful, thanks to the tropical island setting of Bali. The nearly three-minute trailer sets, not just the expectation, but also the entire plot of the movie. From the moment they encounter each other on the plane, there’s endless bickering and passive-aggressive exchange between the couple, which of course becomes the premise for these characters. But that also defines the story’s appeal. Their interactions are hilarious and sometimes, cute, as they try to work towards their plan of “saving” their 20-something daughter, and it makes the characters more endearing. The major highlight of the movie though, as is obvious from the trailer, is the dynamic duo of Roberts and Clooney, looking as charming and funny as they did in their last on-screen appearance.

The trailer practically lays out the entire plot and what to expect, since there’s no big surprise that would need to be hidden. What we can look forward to in the movie is how far the parents would go with their plan and whether they will fail or succeed in their attempt to thwart the wedding.

As of now, the details of all the characters of Ticket to Paradise are not available. However, from what we have learned from the trailer and promos, here’s the list of main cast members and the characters they're playing:

Julia Roberts and George Clooney are headlining the cast of Ticket to Paradise . The duo has a long history of co-starring, starting with Ocean’s Eleven and its sequel, Ocean’s Twelve , where they play each other’s love interests. The actors also appeared together in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind , and Money Monster . Julia Roberts plays Lily’s mother and George Clooney plays the father. Further details about their characters have not been revealed yet. But we do know that they are a divorced couple who simply despise being in each other’s presence. They are in Bali only to stop their daughter’s wedding.

Besides the reunion of these two Hollywood legends, the cast of Ticket to Paradise also includes Kaitlyn Dever as Lily, the 25-year-old daughter of Clooney and Roberts's characters. She fell in love with a guy in Bali on her graduation trip and decided to get married there, which is the reason why her parents, despite all the odds between them, are in Bali together. Maxime Bouttier plays Gede, the young man from Bali who Lily is in love with and wants to marry. He seems to be a nice guy and even Lily’s dysfunctional parents seem to like him. Billie Lourd plays Wren Butler; Lily’s friend who is in Bali with her and Gede for the wedding.

The principal photography for Ticket to Paradise was conducted in Queensland, Australia, between November 2021 and February 2022. The romantic comedy-drama has been filmed across various locations in Australia including the Whitsunday Islands, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island, and The Palm Bay Resort on Long Island.

Ticket to Paradise is not one story, but several stories overlapping each other. For starters, it does seem to be about two parents trying to help their daughter save herself from a life-changing mistake. Once married for five years, and been in and out of each other’s lives for 19 years, Lily’s parents cannot stand the sight of each other. In simple words, they just hate being in each other’s presence. Yet, they are trying hard to get through this vacation so they can sabotage the wedding that they think is wrong for their child. Yes, there are some parallels to HBO Max's 2022 version of Father of the Bride . But that’s not all that there is in this movie.

This is Lily’s story as well. She is marrying a guy she met only a few weeks earlier. After graduation, she spent some time in Bali and fell in love with a guy she believes can give her all the happiness in the world. No matter what her parents think, she is in love and all she expects from them is to be a part of the wedding without any drama or disaster. While the parents do their best and try to work as a team to put a stop to the wedding, Lily and Gede go about their lives, preparing for their big day. And seeing their determination, her parents could also be having second thoughts about their plans, and who knows, the circumstances might turn around and bring them closer.

Despite its faults, one thing is for certain: Julia Roberts and George Clooney are having the time of their lives and there has to be something said for that. So often we see big stars doing movies that pay well, but they see it as beneath them - and it’s obvious that they’re not even trying to immerse themselves in the project. Roberts and Clooney - three Oscars between them and monikers as two of the best actors working today - do not fall into this category. They give it their all. Ticket to Paradise features an impressive cast, among which a few notable A-listers will be familiar faces to the audience, bringing the characters of the Cotton family and the people around them to life. The film reunites the actors George Clooney and Julia Roberts who had previously been a couple on-screen in the role of the main couple. Ticket to Paradise is directed and co-written by Ol Parker, best known for directing and co-writing the 2018 film Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! in a similar genre. George Clooney plays David Cotton, one of the main characters in the film. David had been married to Georgia for five years before their divorce. The two now hate each other and only interact with each other for their daughter Lily who they both love. George Clooney has directing credits to his filmography, but he's widely known for his acting roles. Most notably, George Clooney won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Syriana in 2006. After that, Clooney had been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his roles in the films Michael Clayton, Up in the Air, and The Descendants. Julia Roberts and George Clooney are (finally!) back together on the big screen.

Julia Roberts and George Clooney are set to reunite on the silver screen in a big way this year, thanks to upcoming rom-com Ticket to Paradise . On the heels of J. Lo’s movie Marry Me , Ticket to Paradise refreshes the genre with familiar actors taking on a zany plot. The flick, directed by Ol Parker (of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again fame) is the latest on-screen collab between Clooney and Roberts, a friendship that’s spanned over 20 years since they met on the set of Ocean’s Eleven . In that time, they’ve worked on 4 movies together , with Ticket to Paradise marking their fifth, forging one of Hollywood’s most iconic bonds.

In an interview with Variety at the Cannes Film Festival , Roberts took a moment to talk about the upcoming feature and joke about her experience filming with Clooney. Jokingly, she said the movie is “probably going to be terrible” because of how funny her and her co-star are, claiming “there’s too much potential for it to be great, it’ll just implode on it itself.” If Roberts’ words are anything to go by, Ticket to Paradise sounds like a treat.

Ticket to Paradise Plot

The official synopsis of the film details Clooney and Roberts as “exes who find themselves on a shared mission to stop their lovestruck daughter from making the same mistake they once made.” Based on the trailer, the pair agree to “call a truce” with one another to successfully trick their daughter (played by Kaitlyn Dever) into dumping her fiancé, who she met recently in Bali, before she impulsively marries him. The ex-couple’s characters are concerned that their daughter is making this big decision too quickly, “just like her mother did,” Roberts says in the preview.

The trailer gives further hints to what we can expect from Ticket to Paradise , including playful competition and banter between Roberts and Clooney, Roberts’ character stealing her daughter’s wedding rings, and Clooney’s character being bit by a dolphin. A brief dance montage of the two closes the trailer out, promising viewers a goofy, enjoyable rom-com.

Clooney and Roberts are the star-appeal in this forthcoming flick, but the supporting cast is stacked as well. The dreamy, beachy backdrop of Ticket to Paradise is on full display in the almost 3-minute trailer, full of bright colors and clever one-liners from the cast.

The tension between the two in the first few seconds of the trailer is evident, as the exes realize they’re seated next to each other on a flight. “Excuse me, ma’am, I need to sit somewhere else,” Roberts’ character said, “we used to be married.” Clooney responds, “worst 19 years of my life” before quipping with Roberts: “We were only married for 5,” she says, “I’m counting the recovery,” he fires back.

Because the Universal film was set back a month while filming in Australia due to lockdown, the release date has been slightly modified. Ticket to Paradise is officially hitting theaters October 21, and we can’t wait to see Clooney and Roberts reunited on the big screen.

Taking a basic cue from the “Philadelphia Story” school of comedies about divorced couples giving it another shot, director Ol Parker (“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” writer of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”) and co-writer Daniel Pipski position David (Clooney) and Georgia (Roberts) as a husband and wife that had it all for five brief years. That was before the lakeside house David built for them burnt to the ground and their happiness went up in smoke with it.

Complicating matters is the unexpected arrival of Georgia’s younger boyfriend, Paul (a thankless role for “Emily in Paris” star Lucas Bravo), an airline pilot. An awkward type who practically worships Georgia, the handsome flyboy unsurprisingly proposes marriage just when the plot demands another distraction to keep David and Georgia apart until rom-com convention determines they’re ready to start looking at each other with new and besotted eyes. 

There’s plenty of zingy repartee in early sequences showing the cantankerous divorcees declaring a truce in order to prevent Lily making what they’re certain will be a huge mistake. Naturally that’s before they’ve even met the hubby-in-waiting, but that’s beside the point and nothing less than sabotaging the nuptials will suffice in such an emergency.

Central to the appeal of rom-coms is the fact that everyone can guess the ending. Their success depends on the timing and execution of funny quips and situations en route to familiar and comforting affirmations of love and romance. After getting off to a promising start, “Ticket to Paradise” never exactly nosedives — that would be just about impossible with Clooney and Roberts in the frame — but often struggles to make the most of a setup that seems ripe for the comic misunderstandings, zany shenanigans and crossed wires that underpin this genre.

Whether David and Georgia are enacting their pretty dumb plans to steal the wedding rings and sow doubt in Gede’s mind, or engineering travel and transport mishaps that will throw arrangements into chaos, the film moves along well enough but rarely hits comic high notes or gathers the momentum to sweep audiences up in the mayhem. David’s unfortunate encounter with a dolphin, or a hotel room switcheroo after Paul’s sudden arrival, are further examples of moments that could have been fashioned into laugh riots but end up as gently amusing instead.

When Parker gets his groove on, the picture rocks, such as the sequence in which Clooney and Roberts bust so-bad-they’re-good dance moves to C+C Music Factory’s ’90s floor-filler “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” at a bar after one too many beer pong games. That’s about as raunchy and wild as it gets in a very PG-13 picture that never even suggests anyone’s having sex before — or even after — marriage.

It’s also good to see Balinese culture and days-long wedding rituals being accurately and respectfully depicted, as the final moment of romantic truth comes closer for the young couple and the parents of the bride-to-be. Filmed primarily in the Whitsunday Islands off northern Australia owing to Covid-19 restrictions making location shooting in Bali impossible, “Ticket” is truly given the look of paradise in the beautifully polished widescreen images of DP Ole Bratt Birkeland (“Judy”). The Aussie duo of production designer Owen Paterson (“The Matrix”) and costumer Lizzy Gardiner (“The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert”) also make fine contributions toward creating of a place that seems a million miles away from all the worries of the world. For a slightly overlong 104 minutes, that’s a place many viewers will be happy enough to visit.

Julia Roberts and George Clooney are back in action again in the new romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise.

Ticket to Paradise sees Julia Roberts and George Clooney back together on the big screen. 

Not only are we excited to have the pair together again one of the biggest new movies in 2022 , but we're also thrilled to have them back in the rom-com space. It’s hard to believe that Notting Hill star Roberts hasn’t been in a romantic comedy in over two decades and we’re glad to see her back at it. 

The duo has a long history of working together, dating back to 2001’s Ocean’s Eleven and the sequel Ocean’s Twelve (2004), along with 2016’s Money Monster . 

This time around they’re playing a divorced couple going to great lengths to keep their daughter from making the same mistakes they did, only it doesn’t go quite as planned. Much of the movie’s charm (as evidenced by the trailer) comes from seeing the hilariously contentious relationship between Roberts and Clooney as they try to work together no matter how hard it is to be in close proximity to each other.

Ticket to Paradise is proving to be one of those movies that was generally panned by critics but loved by audiences. As of this writing, the movie is sitting on a 56% from 144 critics on Rotten Tomatoes , but it's at 80% from the audience. 

It has an IMDB Metascore of 51, with an IMDB rating of 6.4/10.

Chris Knight of the National Post had this to say: " Ticket to Paradise is an old-school rom-com from start to finish. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel or even give it particularly fresh treads but, to be fair, it’s clearly not trying to either."

Rolling Stone's David Fear offered this: "While no one could accuse Ticket to Paradise of being a 'great' movie, or even a 'very good' one, there’s something about watching Clooney and Roberts butt up against each other in front of a screen-saver background that scratches a long-dormant itch."

Ester Zuckerman of Bloomberg didn't love the movie, but offered this: "Watching Ticket to Paradise , the new starry theatrical rom-com, you may occasionally find your mind drifting. Hey, you might think, if nothing else, George Clooney and Julia Roberts got a great vacation out of this experience. I bet they had fun."

Not surprisingly, the trailer for Ticket to Paradise sets up the entire movie. Bitter divorced couple trying to "save" their daughter, only to discover that working together again isn’t as bad as they thought it would be. Kind of. There’s still a lot of bickering and mayhem, which makes the movie all the more endearing.

Ticket to Paradise: cast, plot and release date of George Clooney and Julia Roberts’ new rom-com

George Clooney and Julia Roberts are back together on screen, and this time they’re playing a divorced couple David and Georgia who are forced to unite in order to stop their daughter from getting married to a Bali local.

It sounds like a convoluted premise, but critics are, on the whole, loving it: “This preposterously fluffy rom-com recycles huge chunks of Mamma Mia!,” wrote The Standard‘s chief film critic Charlotte O’Sullivan in her review . “If you’re in the mood for a great escape, you’ve basically just won the lottery.”

It’s the first proper rom-com that both Clooney and Roberts have acted in in decades, and it’s also the first time the actors have starred in a film together (though they have worked together five times previously – including as a feuding ex-couple in Ocean’s Eleven and Ocean’s Twelve).

Here’s everything else to know about the highly anticipated film.

Who else is in it?

Kaitlyn Dever, whose previous credits include Booksmart, Dear Evan Hansen and Beautiful Boy, plays Roberts and Clooney’s daughter Lily.

Billie Lourd (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) plays Lily’s best friend (and apparently she’s incredible in the role), French actor Lucas Bravo (the hunk from Emily in Paris) plays Georgia’s pilot boyfriend and French actor Maxime Bouttier plays Lily’s fiancé Gede.

What else do we know about the plot?

The antics begin when art dealer Georgia and architect David’s daughter Lily plans to marry a Bali local (who she has just met) instead of pursuing a promising legal career. The duo happen to meet up on the plane on the way to her wedding and decide to put aside their differences for the sake of their daughter.

“I won’t let her throw her life away. We need to trick her into dumping him,” says Roberts. “As much as this will pain us both, we have to call a truce to make this work.”

They plan to steal their daughter’s rings. What cunning – that way the wedding won’t be able to go ahead! All the while Clooney and Roberts are bickering, and as could be predicted, start to hate each other a little less.

Are there any other production details?

As far as rom-coms go, Ticket to Paradise couldn’t have a stronger team behind it. The film has been directed by Ol Parker, who also wrote and directed 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and it has been written by Parker alongside Daniel Pipski, whose previous credits include producing 2020’s miniseries A Teacher and 2008’s Milk.

Working Title, who was behind some of the late Nineties and early Noughties’ best rom-coms – think Notting Hill, The Matchmaker, Four Weddings and a Funeral, High Fidelity, Bridget Jones’s Diary and Wimbledon – are co-producers of the film.

Is there a release date?

The film was set to be released today, but has been delayed out of respect for the Queen.

In a statement shared with Deadline, Universal said: “With the passing of Her Majesty the Queen, Universal, Working Title, Julia Roberts, George Clooney and director Ol Parker have all decided to delay the opening of Ticket to Paradise in the UK.”

Ticket to Paradise will now be released on Tuesday, September 20.

What are the critics saying?

Critics are, more or less, thrilled by the forthcoming film, even when failing to back up their compliments with generous star ratings. “It’s a joy to watch Julia Roberts and George Clooney fall in love. It’s an even greater joy to watch them bicker,” wrote The Independent.

“Ticket to Paradise is going to make its producers a ton of money. Sometimes it’s nice to be told life’s a beach,” wrote The Standard .

The Financial Times called it “a sugary screwball served with a thick wedge of nostalgia”. That certainly sounds like high praise.

What have Clooney and Roberts said?

By all accounts, it seems that the Hollywood stars are delighted to be starring together in Ticket to Paradise. For Roberts, the last rom-com she headlined was the 2001 Joe Roth-directed America’s Sweethearts, while for Clooney, it has been even longer.

Speaking to the New York Times, Clooney said: “I hadn’t really done a romantic comedy since One Fine Day [which was released in 1996] — I haven’t succeeded like Julia has in that forum — but I read it and thought, ‘Well, if Jules is up for it, I think this could be fun.’”

Roberts added: “It somehow only made sense with George, just based on our chemistry. We have a friendship that people are aware of, and we’re going into it as this divorced couple. Half of America probably thinks we are divorced, so we have that going for us.”

She added: “George and I felt a lot of happy responsibility in wanting to make a comedy together, to give people a holiday from life after the world had gone through a really hard time.”

Ticket to Paradise will be released in UK cinemas on September 20

Watching “Ticket to Paradise,” one can’t help but think of the famous James Stewart line from 1940’s “The Philadelphia Story.” It goes, “The prettiest sight in this fine, pretty world is the privileged class enjoying its privileges.”

To be clear, the privileged class in Ol Parker ’s frustratingly unexceptional rom-com doesn’t only consist of the story’s chief characters: successful architects, art dealers, and recent grads of a fancy college, with pockets deep enough to afford an extended luxury vacation in Bali. In this specific case, it also consists of two bona fide movie stars— George Clooney and Julia Roberts (you might have heard of them here and there)—having a ball with the well-earned privileges of their status as the-last-of-their-kind Hollywood superstars, while bickering their way through some bitter zingers and sarcastic gotchas.

In that regard, it certainly is a pretty sight, to witness two gorgeous, forever-charismatic silver screen royals unite against a breathtaking tropical backdrop (and in frothy promotional videos), with their gracefully aging visages front and center before the rest of us mortals. Sadly though, the loose link between “Ticket to Paradise” and George Cukor ’s screwball classic stop right there, at that aforementioned quote. And you should blame it on a dispiriting script that relies too heavily on its A-list actors’ magnetic presence alone, instead of bothering with a good story that we can root for.

So let’s jump to another quote from another film. At this stage, imagine this die-hard romantic-comedy devotee, throwing her jazz hands in the air and yelling like the late William Hurt in “ A History of Violence ”: “How do you f**k that up?” Indeed, how on earth do the effortless charms of Roberts and Clooney not yield the kind of rom-com we used to routinely get in the ‘90s? The issue is the second romantic tale that unfolds around them, one that doesn’t hit a single believable note. It belongs to Lily (a delightful Kaitlyn Dever in an underwritten part), who is the abovesaid college graduate on her way to a Bali vacation, with her fun and sexually very active female sidekick, Wren ( Billie Lourd ), and an invitation to join a top-shelf law firm on her return.

Soon enough, Lily decides to get married to the handsome seaweed farmer Gede ( Maxime Bouttier ) she’s somehow rapidly fallen in love with, after the laziest meet-cute sequence imaginable. (It’s more appropriate to call that scene just plain meet and drop the cute entirely.) So instead of enjoying her time with Wren, having some wild nights out, and returning home for the bright future that awaits—you know, like any intelligent young woman of her caliber would do—Lily dedicates her entire being to Gede. There is of course nothing wrong with love at first sight in life or in movies, the kind that this critic is shamelessly in favor of, especially in cinematic contexts. But to make the massive life decision of marriage and deciding to stay in Bali for it on a whim? Even the rugged ice harvester Kristoff of “ Frozen ” laughed at this idea: “You mean to tell me you got engaged to someone you just met that day?” And that was a Disney movie in a 19 th Century setting.

Objectively speaking, Lily doesn’t decide on the marriage that day exactly. But the film is so lacking in building the couple’s romance and chemistry that it feels like a same-day verdict. What co-writers Parker and Daniel Pipski instead do is use Lily’s storyline as an excuse to bring Clooney’s David and Roberts’ Georgia together, Lily’s parents and each other’s exes that hate one another. But the duty calls and the duo embarks on a mission to Bali to end this ridiculous fling as a pair of responsible parents.

In fairness, “Ticket to Paradise” earns some goodwill during the David-Georgia scenes and gives the two some sharp moments of squabble, several of which the film’s trailer unfortunately spoils. But the ex-couple’s sexual tension and natural ease at hating each other earn the admission price, even when the momentary bliss we feel in their presence fades away with Lily and Gede reappearing frequently and a present-day romantic interest of Georgia (played by Lucas Bravo ) taking up too much time. It would have been one thing if “Ticket to Paradise” spent some real time thinking through the young fiancés, helping us understand what makes them interesting and right for each other. But in the aftermath, you’ll be shocked at how little you’ll learn about either, apart from their vast affection for the locale they often call beautiful. Well, of course, it is beautiful because what we see is mostly a luxury resort, a fact that makes the “I understand why she likes it here” quote from the parents painfully funny when they show empathy towards Lily’s decision to stay. Doesn’t everyone like a luxury resort?

We do get to see some things outside of the resort, like the lovely grounds of Gede’s supportive family and a pair of touristic sites. But “Ticket to Paradise” seems oddly disinterested in any family dynamics or anything that has to do with Bali, save for a couple of nuptial traditions cartoonishly represented. In the world of this film, everything is background noise and an item on a list of excuses to bring George and Julia together. The saddest casualty of this disposition is Wren. But with her P.J. Soles vibes, Billie Lourd still runs with it enchantingly, committing the cardinal sin of being far more memorable than the bride herself. Perhaps in revenge, the film periodically forgets about her existence.

Bless the old-school stars Roberts and Clooney for elevating this lackluster mélange and in certain instances, even making you forget about the non-sensical film that surrounds them. But that’s hardly enough, especially if you are hoping for a homecoming for the rom-coms of yore.

The 29-year-old indonesian actor makes his big hollywood debut with stars george clooney and julia roberts.

A beautiful escape to the province of Bali is what Universal Pictures and A Working Title Productions promise with their latest movie release, “Ticket to Paradise.” Led by director Ol Parker (“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”), the film has a cast full of A-list celebrities such as George Clooney (“Gravity”), Julia Roberts (“Eat Pray Love”), Kaitlyn Dever (“Booksmart”), Billie Lourd (“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”), and Lucas Bravo (“Emily in Paris”). Joining them is newcomer Maxime Bouttier, an Indonesian actor who’s now Hollywood’s newly minted heartthrob.

In the movie, Maxime plays Gede, a Balinese seaweed farmer, opposite Kaitlyn’s Lily, the daughter of the divorced couple David and Georgia Cotton, played by George and Julia, respectively. After the young couple’s surprise marriage announcement, the former lovers travel to Indonesia, hoping to put a stop to the abrupt nuptial. 

For novice actors, performing alongside some of the biggest names in the film industry could be a daunting task, and it truly is, according to Maxime. But with his acting prowess and natural charm on the screen, the 29-year-old star is truly one of the main factors why people should see “Ticket to Paradise.” 

Before the movie makes its debut in the Philippines, Manila Bulletin Lifestyle got a chance to talk with Maxime. From working with Hollywood elites to preparing for the big role, the actor shares his journey and the lessons he picked up in becoming Gede for the movie. 

Transforming to Gede

Maxime confessed that he is a huge fan of his co-stars. In fact, the first “Batman” movie he saw was George’s “Batman & Robin.” He was in awe of Julia’s performance in “Ocean's Eleven” with George, and loved Kaitlyn's spunky characterization in the film “Booksmart.” Believe it or not, becoming an actor wasn’t part of his plan. But his love for the movies paved the way for it to happen. 

“It was such a treat. It is an unbelievable occurrence in my life,” Maxime tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “I never thought that it would happen. I was just so starstruck with everyone.”

Being awestruck also comes with nervousness. So good preparation is a must for Maxime before the camera starts rolling. For him, being physically fit plays an essential role in his process. Not only did it make him feel more confident during filming, but it also helped him tame the agitations he felt along the way.

“I'm not the sporty kind of guy. I have never really done that. But when I’m doing the workouts, it kind of gave me time to help with my nervousness,” he muses. “I don’t think about the idea that I’m doing a movie with George, Kaitlyn, Lucas, and Julia—all these big names. It helped me a little bit to go out of that train of thought.”

More than just a leading man

Gede is more than just a leading man in the film. The character has more layers and purpose on the screen. For Maxime, Gede presents our connection with nature. Portraying a seaweed farmer showcased a certain view of the Balinese way of living, that it is a “give-and-take deal with nature.” It is a subconscious theme that surrounds the wise character, and to fully dissect it to its core, Maxime watched nature documentaries such as David Attenborough’s “Planet Earth.”

“That is also the message that Gede is trying to tell the audience,” Maxime says. “If we won’t take care of her (Mother Nature), she won’t take care of us. That's the biggest message that we should take in, especially in our time right now when things are happening really quickly.”

“There is still a way for us to find the balance between saving the planet and having the means to provide for our family,” he adds. “That’s the Bali custom and tradition—to be in touch with the nature around you.”

Resurgence of rom-com in cinemas

It hasn’t been a year since the cinemas reopened in the Philippines. “Ticket to Paradise” is one of the first movies in the rom-com genre to be played on the big screen in the country. With that, Maxime hopes that everyone will find a good movie experience from it, and come out of the cinema feeling joyful because of its lighthearted script, great ensemble, and idyllic scenes.

“It has been a while since we’ve seen movies like this,” Maxime says. “I think it’s like a breath of fresh air, especially now. It is going to be the perfect escape. I think people would feel good for two to three hours. This is something where people could just let go and have fun. There are subtle messages about nature because that's how I felt about the movie, but people would just enjoy it. With what's happening around the world, this would be the perfect movie. I hope this will help bring back the rom-com genre.”

“Ticket to Paradise” premieres today, Oct. 5, in local cinemas nationwide.

Where You've Seen The Cast Of Ticket To Paradise Before

While seeing their son or daughter get married is one of the happiest days of many parents' lives, it's an occasion marked with far less joyful feelings for others. That's exactly the situation that divorced couple David (George Clooney) and Georgia (Julia Roberts) find themselves in after they learn that their daughter Lily (Kaitlyn Dever) is on the verge of getting married. They haven't even given her boyfriend Gede (Maxime Bouttier) a chance yet, but feeling that their daughter is too young to get married — and looking back on their own rocky past — the pair decide to try and sabotage the wedding. What the two don't expect, however, is just how much easier said than done their mission is. Nor do they predict that their own relationship might see a few changes of its own.

"Ticket to Paradise" is the latest release from feel-good director Ol Parker. In addition to the aforementioned stars, the quirky comedy finds room for plenty of other talented actors and actresses sprinkled throughout, some of which have acting histories that might surprise you. Let's look back at some of the most memorable films and television shows that the cast of "Ticket to Paradise" have been in.

George Clooney

Superstar George Clooney has been in quite a few motion pictures and television series over the years in his well-established Hollywood career. The Kentucky-born actor made his very first appearance as an extra in the 1978 television miniseries "Centennial," but it would be another 15 years before he landed his first major role as Dr. Doug Ross on the long-running medical drama "ER." Soon after, he appeared alongside director Quentin Tarantino in the 1996 horror film "From Dusk Till Dawn" as bank robber Seth Gecko. Other major roles throughout the late '90s included his starring role as the Dark Knight in "Batman and Robin," as well as Jack Foley in "Out of Sight" and Captain Bosche in "The Thin Red Line."

Moving on to the 2000s, Clooney enjoyed some of his best roles to date. His role as Ulysses in the well-received "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" got the decade off to a great start, which was made even better with the lead role in perhaps his best film to date , "Ocean's Eleven." By now, Clooney was at a point in his career that afforded him frequent lead roles, as evidenced by his powerful title performance in "Michael Clayton." Clooney's storied filmography also included a lead voice in 2009's "Fantastic Mr. Fox" and, in the 2010s, the sympathetic Matt King in "The Descendants." More recently, performances in "Gravity," "The Ides of March," and "The Midnight Sky" have rounded out Clooney's extensive list of roles.

Julia Roberts

Appearing alongside her "Ocean's Eleven" co-star George Clooney in "Ticket to Paradise," Julia Roberts is perhaps the only star in this one to have a filmography rivaling his. Like Clooney, she got her first screen role in a short-lived television series, this one titled "Crime Story," before moving on to bigger and brighter things. Roberts' first role worth remembering was in a rom-com from 1988 titled "Mystic Pizza," in which she starred as the fun-loving Daisy Araújo. She was cast soon after in "Steel Magnolias" as Shelby Latcherie, in a role that persists as one of her best even now, before finally getting her breakout role in "Pretty Woman" just a year later.

Roberts departed from more lighthearted fare and delved into horror immediately afterward, portraying the lead role of Dr. Rachel Mannus in Joel Schuumaker's 1990 cult favorite "Flatliners."  The '90s saw her cast in such films as "Hook," "Michael Collins," and "My Best Friend's Wedding," before closing out the decade with a great performance in "Notting Hill" as famous actress Anna Scott.

The turn of the millennium marked a shift, with Roberts taking on some more serious roles in films like 2000's "Erin Brokovich" and 2004's "Closer, and winning a  Best Actress Oscar for the former. More recently, Roberts has proven she can tackle some of the most hard-hitting films of her career, with standouts "Wonder" and "The Normal Heart" proving that there's no project too difficult for this accomplished actress to shine in.

Kaitlyn Dever

Portraying Lily, David and Georgia's daughter — and cause of their newfound grief — in "Ticket to Paradise" is Kaitlyn Dever, who's had a pretty accomplished career for such a young actress. She first appeared as Gwen Thompson in the TV movie "An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong." Afterwards, she enjoyed several one-off TV appearances in shows like "Make it or Break It," "Party Down," and even an episode of the incredibly popular sitcom "Modern Family," as Bianca Douglas.

It took a little while for Dever to truly take off on the big screen, as most of her efforts in the 2010s saw her land supporting parts in films like Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar," as well as "Short Term 12," "Detroit," and "Beautiful Boy." It wouldn't be until 2019 that her most recognizable movie to date finally hit theaters, with her portrayal of Amy Antsler in the comedy "Booksmart" becoming a career highlight.

Going back to television, Dever is perhaps best known for her time as Eve Baxter on the sitcom "Last Man Standing," as well as her portrayal of Marie Adler in the true crime limited series "Unbelievable." Additionally, she played Loretta McCready on the hit crime drama "Justified," and was nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her work in the acclaimed opioid crisis drama "Dopesick." Although she's already got quite a list of performances under her belt for such a relatively young actor, Dever is likely to have plenty more memorable roles to look forward to in the future.

Billie Lourd

"Ticket to Paradise," in which she portrays Lily's best friend and maid of honor Wren Butler, is actress Billie Lourd's first foray into rom-com territory. Though it's Lily's romance that's at the center of the movie, Wren serves as a worthy supporting character that we wish we could have seen a little bit more of. Though her acting career is still in its early years, Lourd came onto the scene in a big way back in 2015 with her role in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Portraying Resistance lieutenant Kaydel Connix, she made further appearances throughout the sequel trilogy in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker." Being that she is also the daughter of none other than late, beloved "Star Wars" legend Carrie Fisher, it certainly seemed that both performing and "Star Wars" were in her blood.

Recent space operas aren't the only thing on Lourd's resume. On television, she's appeared in roles such as Chanel #3 on "Scream Queens," as well as various characters on the ever-popular series "American Horror Story," including Winter Anderson, Mallory, Montana Duke, Lark Feldman, and Dr. Hannah Wells. She also appeared in the 2018 crime drama "Billionaire Boys Club" as Rosanna Ricci, and even had a supporting role alongside Kaitlyn Dever in "Booksmart" as Jared's party-loving friend Gigi.

Maxime Bouttier

Playing Lily's love interest Gede in "Ticket to Paradise," French-born Indonesian actor Maxime Bouttier has stayed within the Indonesian market for the majority of his acting career, making it likely that few of his past works will be instantly recognized by casual film fans. Nonetheless, with "Ticket to Paradise" being his first internationally released romantic comedy, that likely won't stay true for much longer.

Bouttier started his career back in 2013 as Oliver in the romantic drama "Refrain," before quickly switching things up and giving the genre of horror a try with "After School Horror" and "Kamar 207." Further roles included the lead in "Dilarang Masuk!," Vino in "Meet Me After Sunset," and Matthew in "Matt and Mou." On the television side, he's best known for portraying Abi and Rangga in the series "Rewrite" and "Unknown," respectively.

Perhaps returning to his early horror roots, Bouttier even tried his hand at directing with the 2019 horror flick "Kain Kafan Hitam," in which he also starred as Bimo. Since his career as an actor is only now receiving worldwide attention, we'll be interested to see what the future has in store for him.

Lucas Bravo

Portraying Georgia's younger boyfriend Paul in "Ticket to Paradise" and a relative unknown until now, Lucas Bravo has one of the smaller filmographies in the cast. The French-born actor has been seen in a number of short films over the years, with a short titled "Subtitles" marking his first onscreen appearance back in 2013. Soon after, he was cast in the French comedy "La Crème de la crème" as supporting character Antoine. Other appearances include an episode of the long-running French series "Plus belle la vie," as well as other short films over the years such as "Cracs," "Iwaa," "Beautiful Injuries," and "Fantasma."

But Bravo is easily most recognizable to audiences now from his major role in the Netflix rom-com series, "Emily in Paris." He plays Gabriel, a restaurant worker and the object of Emily's unrequited affection. On the big screen, he portrayed André Fauvel, the accountant for fashion house Dior in the 2022 film "Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris." With those recent experiences, it becomes pretty clear why he was chosen to play Paul in "Ticket to Paradise."

Ling Cooper Tang

Appearing in a bit role as an auctioneer in "Ticket to Paradise," actress Ling Cooper Tang has a long history when it comes to TV appearances, going back to the late '90s. Some early and less noteworthy titles include performances in "Big Sky," "Fallen Angels," and the Australian series "Breakers." In 1999, she would begin acting in her longest-running role to date as Dr. Kylie Preece on the medical drama "All Saints," appearing in an impressive 89 episodes. Other recurring roles worth mentioning include KC on the small town drama "Fireflies," Mei Lin Blake on "The Doctor Blake Mysteries," and Sergeant Carrie Hench in the ongoing series "Troppo."

Though TV is where most of her experience has been, Tang has also been in a handful of films over the years, starting off with a bit role in "Strange Planet" as Verna. Years later, she would portray an unnamed reporter in Nicolas Cage's divisive "Ghost Rider" and most recently took on a supporting role in the heartwarming "Sit. Stay. Love." She'll also be seen in the upcoming adventure series "Nautilus," based on Jules Verne's classic novel "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

Before playing Rob in "Ticket to Paradise," actor Sean Lynch had brought various characters to life across his 30-year career. Early projects included a supporting role as Jaco in the grim sci-fi film "Habitat," as well as a brief stint on the long-running soap opera "Shortland Street," which follows the goings-on at a New Zealand hospital.

Some later appearances included an episode of "All Saints" as Darcy Thompson, as well as minor roles in films in "Cedar Boys." Some of the most memorable entries in Lynch's filmography have surfaced over the past few years, however, as the actor portrayed characters like Popeye in Mel Gibson's gritty war film "Hacksaw Ridge," Martin in the 2021 horror film "The Possessed," and a British soldier in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales."

While not known for many major roles, Lynch's talents as an actor have been enough to grant him appearances in some surprisingly memorable films over the years, with more likely to come.

Arielle Carver-O'Neill

Australian actress Arielle Carver-O'Neill plays the character of Kimberly in "Ticket to Paradise." Known best as a TV actor, the rom-com marks only her second outing on the big screen, with the first being an unnamed role in 2014's sci-fi thriller "Predestination."

With a career just over a decade in the making, Carver-O'Neill has already been a part of some pretty memorable shows. She got her start in 2011 on an episode of Australian soap opera "Neighbors," before playing Tamara in a handful of episodes on the crime drama "Conspiracy 365." Not long after, she portrayed characters like Sloane Valiquette in the series "Suburbs," Samantha King in the teen series "Worst Year of my Life, Again!" and, perhaps most noteworthy, Brandy Barr in the hit series "Ash vs. Evil Dead."  Carver-O'Neill doesn't appear to have worked very much since her time on "Ash vs. Evil Dead," a hiatus that was finally ended by her performance in "Ticket to Paradise."

Romy Poulier

With a brief cameo in "Ticket to Paradise" as a flight attendant, Romy Poulier makes just her third feature film appearance in the 2022 rom-com. After debuting in the small role of Chickenwing in the Australian horror film "Beast No More," she went on to appear in "The Possessed" — alongside fellow "Ticket to Paradise" cast member Sean Lynch — before boarding "Ticket to Paradise" for her Hollywood feature debut.

Even though Poulier's film career is relatively small, the Australian actress has made a few appearances on television over the past decade as well. A one-off appearance on Aussie police series "The Strip" got it all started in 2008, and was later followed by regular appearances as Gemma on "The Elephant Princess," which told the story of one girl's journey to the throne in the fantasy land of Manjipoor. A few less memorable TV roles followed, with the actress appearing in the short-lived 2011 sci-fi series "Terra Nova" and a single episode of "Home and Away."

Francis McMahon

Playing an unnamed artist in "Ticket to Paradise," Francis McMahon launched his career back in 2001 with a small role in the Australian made-for-TV drama "My Brother Jack." With less than two dozen film and television credits on his resume , it might be tricky for all but the most devoted cinephiles to pick out McMahon from one title to another. Nonetheless, here's a quick look at everything he's done so far.

In the years that followed "My Brother Jack," McMahon tackled some of the roles that are still among his most important, including Anton in the 2003 comedy "The Rage in Placid Lake." It was just his second film role two years earlier, as Dirk in "He Died with a Felafel in His Hand," that became his most memorable, however. The unique film follows the character of Daniel Kirkhope (Noah Taylor) as he navigates the tiresome life of sharing various apartments with new roommates throughout Australia. McMahon had a small but important part, playing one of Daniel's roommates in his third and final apartment. McMahon later took on parts such as the lead in "The Life o'Simon," Governor Philip in the period comedy "Bruce," and John Morris in "Troppo."

Dorian Djoudi

Dorian Djoudi makes just his second film appearance as an actor with the minor role of Komang in "Ticket to Paradise." That might be a bit misleading, however, as in truth he's been in more films than you might expect — just not as a thespian. 

The professional stuntman, camera operator, and stunt rigger has worked behind the camera in the lighting deparment on films like "Thor: Ragnarok," "Pacific Rim: Uprising," and even "Aquaman." He's been a stunt performer or rigger for shows like "Reef Break" and "The Witcher," while also working as a stunt performer or diver in films such as "The Shallows" and "Godzilla vs. Kong." He's doing more of the same for the upcoming Disney+ series "Nautilus," based on "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." His face might not be front and center on camera, but he's the type of guy that gets called in to do the crazy stuff that the actors can't.

Following the story of a divorced couple who set out to disrupt the upcoming nuptials of their only child, “Ticket To Paradise” follows these two bickering parents as they fly to Bali to “save” their daughter. In an attempt to stop the wedding, the ex-couple (George Clooney and Julia Roberts) begrudgingly team up to ensure their daughter does not make, at least in their eyes, a life-altering mistake. As the divorcees take desperate measures to derail the nuptials, the duo finds themselves in an unexpected turn of events by rekindling their own romance.

Released in 2022, Ticket To Paradise earned 172.2 million dollars in box office sales on a 60 million dollar budget. But what about where it takes place and the location of filming? Ahead is everything you need to know about where this romantic comedy was actually filmed.

Directed by Oliver Parker, Best Known for Directing Mamma Mia!

Oliver Parker is an English director, producer, and screenwriter best known for directing “ Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again ,” “The Best Marigold Hotel,” and “Imagine Me & You.” Parker also did his fair share of acting before completely committing to behind the camera work. The Cast Spent Down Time Relaxing on Resort Islands

Seems pretty compelling, and this is just what the cast and crew got to do on the movie set. According to sources, the cast of “Ticket To Paradise” spent most of their downtime relaxing on resort islands in between filming the movie on various islands.

Luxury yachts were on hand to transport them from island to island. For Clooney and his family, an 85-foot deluxe charter was commissioned to transport them. The yacht, which was hired from Alani, can be used for overnight trips and has a waterslide, stand-up paddle boards, and snorkeling gear with its own crew. Julia Roberts, Clooney’s fake- ex-wife, was rumored to hop from island to island using a helicopter.

So, Where Was ‘Ticket To Paradise Filmed’? It Wasn’t Bali

Much like other films where the plot’s location isn’t actually filmed there, “Ticket To Paradise” is one of them. The movie, set in Bali, was actually filmed in Australia. The cast and crew had every intention to film in Bali, however, they had to cease production because of COVID regulations and restrictions for filming.

Their next best bet was Whitsunday Islands in Australia. It was the ideal place to film certain scenes with lush tropical backdrops. Close to Brisbane in Queensland, Whitsunday Islands is surrounded by beautiful mountains and turquoise-blue ocean waters. The location of the film fits perfectly with Australia for the “Balinese” backdrop you see in the movie.

It is confusing sometimes as to why film production takes place in a different location than where the film is supposed to take place. The reason for this is usually much more complicated than one might expect, so much so that a crucial part of a production team is the location scout/manager.

Location scouts/managers are tasked with finding the perfect place for the film production to take place. According to an article by MasterClass , this entails considering the aesthetic of the location, the location’s distance, permission to film on the location, cost of using that location, logistical factors of being on that location and environmental factors of the location.

A lifeguard and surf instructor – who also appeared in movies including “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Blue Crush” - died Sunday following an apparent shark attack on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, according to officials.

Tamayo Perry, 49, was an “eight-year veteran of Honolulu Ocean Safety and well-known North Shore waterman,” Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi said in a statement.

Perry “exemplified bravery, commitment and a deep sense of duty, serving our community with unwavering dedication. His heroic actions and tireless efforts to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors will never be forgotten,” Blangiardi added.

Just before 1 p.m. Sunday, Honolulu Ocean Safety and other emergency responders arrived at a beach after a call came in about a surfer who’d been fatally injured in a shark attack, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Shayne Enright said.

Honolulu Ocean Safety responded by jet ski and brought Perry to shore, where first responders pronounced him dead.

Perry was a lifeguard who was loved by all, a professional surfer known worldwide, and had an “infectious” personality, Honolulu Ocean Safety acting Chief Kurt Lager said.

“As much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more,” Lager said.

Perry made several TV and movie appearances, according to his  IMBD page .

Perry’s bio on the Oahu Surfing Experience  website lists the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, “Charlie’s Angels 2,” “Blue Crush,” and hit TV shows “Lost” and “Hawaii Five-0,” among his credits.

Perry also appeared in national and international ad campaigns, he wrote.

“When I’m not acting, I’m still quite a character, so there’s always a ton of fun to be had,” he said.

Perry’s wife, Emilia Perry, was born and raised in Western Australia and competed as a professional bodyboarder before moving to Hawaii, where she met her husband and started surfing competitively, according to her bio on the surfing  website .

“When I was 18 years old, I came to Hawaii for a competition and met Tamayo while bodyboarding out at Pipeline. A few years later, I picked up a surfboard, we got married and there was no turning back,” she wrote, adding, “the vast amounts of ocean knowledge that Tamayo has ingrained in me over the years is priceless.”

The University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File lists 120 shark bite incidents in 2023. Of the 36 shark bites that occurred in the US, eight were in Hawaii, one of which was fatal.

According to the shark attack file’s 2023 report, surfers experienced 42% of bites worldwide. Though the number of bites and fatalities increased last year, compared to the previous year, the report authors say the numbers are still in line with recent trends.

The Honolulu community will provide the necessary support following Perry’s death, the mayor said.

“As we grieve this unimaginable loss, we are reminded of the inherent risks faced by our lifeguards daily, and we extend our deepest gratitude for their service,” Blangiardi said.

Walt Disney Studios' classic The Lion King was released 30 years ago on June 24, 1994. Three decades later, the much-anticipated release of Mufasa: The Lion King — an animated musical drama that is a prequel to the 2019 adaptation of the timeless classic — is mere months away.

Mufasa: The Lion King will take viewers through Mufasa's origin story, his friendships, relationships and pivotal events that led to his eventual reign as king of the Pride Lands. 

From the esteemed director of Moonlight, Aftersun and If Beale Street Could Talk , Barry Jenkins and returning writer from the 2019 adaptation, Jeff Nathanson, Mufasa will bring forth new layers to the story while honoring the enduring legacy. 

Among the ensemble cast of familiar faces are Beyoncé and her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter , which Jenkins noted has added a dynamic element to a film rooted in family values .

“[Watching Beyoncé], both on the screen and behind the screen, get to be a mother — and how that affected and impacted for the better the work that we were all doing — was just really awesome," Jenkins told PEOPLE in April 2024.

What is Mufasa: The Lion King about?

Mufasa explores the early life of Mufasa as he goes from an orphaned cub to his rise as one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands (and the history of animated cinema). The origin story will offer a deeper understanding of his character and the dynamics within the Pride Lands, including Mufasa’s relationship with his brother Taka, who later becomes the famed Lion King antagonist, Scar. The story is told through flashbacks narrated by Pride Lands shaman Rafiki to Kiara (daughter of Simba and Nala), with added witty commentary from Timon and Pumbaa.

"What you'll learn from the story is that Mufasa is who he is ... because of the family and the friends that he has,” Jenkins said at Disney's D23 Expo in 2022. “And so I saw myself in that. I thought: 'This is a really beautiful story to tell.' "

The upcoming film has a star-studded cast, with many returning from the 2019 adaptation. Donald Glover , Seth Rogen , Billy Eichner , John Kani and Beyoncé will reprise their roles as Simba, Pumbaa, Timon, Rafiki and Nala, respectively. Joining them are new cast members such as Aaron Pierre as young Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as young Scar, Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Lennie James as Obasi and Blue Ivy making her feature film debut as Kiara.

The mother-daughter duo of Beyoncé and Blue Ivy brings a unique dynamic to the film, as the 12-year-old recently joined her mother as a backup dancer on Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour and was featured in her Grammy-winning “Brown Skin Girl” music video.  

“I feel like Blue grew quite a bit over the course of that tour,” Jenkins told PEOPLE in April 2024. “The movie is kind of like this snapshot, this time capsule of a moment in their lives that I think is really beautiful. And it absolutely worked for the film .”

Music has always been a crucial part of The Lion King franchise, and fans can expect original tracks by award-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda , celebrated for his contributions to Broadway hits like Hamilton and other Disney animated features like Moana and Ecanto . 

“ The Lion King has an incredible musical legacy with music from some of the greatest songwriters around, and I'm humbled and proud to be a part of it,” Miranda said in a statement . “It's been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa's story to life, and we can't wait for audiences to experience this film in theaters."

Walt Disney Studios released the first trailer for Mufasa on April 29. The trailer opens with narration from Rafiki as a lion cub gazes at his reflection in a raindrop, which the mandrill shaman introduces as Mufasa: “Born without a drop of nobility in his blood — a lion who would change our lives forever.” Set to the backdrop of Ledo M’s vocals in the original “Circle of Life,” the trailer features clips of giraffes, lions, elephants and a young Mufasa throughout the Pride Lands expanse — with some glimpses of a less savannahian landscape of snow and ice. While Rafiki’s narration is the only voice featured in the trailer, the clips hint at a myriad of action and adventure in the forthcoming film.

Juneteenth, which became both a federal and state holiday in 2021 , celebrates the anniversary of federal troops’ arrival in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to ensure all enslaved people had been freed. 15 Great Donald Sutherland Performances to Stream

Whether in the lead or a supporting role, the actor’s immense talent and range were apparent in six decades of performances.

A lithe and seductively charming actor who worked consistently for more than six decades in Hollywood, often as a leading man, Donald Sutherland died on Thursday at 88 . As a thinking man’s sex symbol whose versatility made him equally persuasive in irreverent comedies and heart-rending dramas, Sutherland worked with major directors across multiple eras, including Robert Altman, Federico Fellini and Clint Eastwood and looked comfortable in both modern dress and period garb. His unusual height — he was 6-foot-4 — and sonorous voice gave Sutherland an authoritative gait, but he was given more toward gentle-giant sensitivity than masculine swagger. Narrowing his great performances down to 15 films is no easy task — there’s at least another 15 where these came from — but this selection of streamable titles is a testament to his immense talent and range.

Kicking off a decade in which counterculture rebellion would seep into American studio movies — and a decade in which, not unrelatedly, Sutherland would become a big star — Robert Altman’s irreverent comedy about a medical unit during the Korean War doubled as a stealth commentary on the then-ongoing quagmire in Vietnam. Sutherland and Elliott Gould embody the film’s coarse iconoclasm and soul as two skilled combat surgeons who fill the downtime between harrowing emergencies with pranks, sarcastic quips and a fair bit of womanizing, often at the expense of the head nurse (Sally Kellerman). A hit in theaters, “M*A*S*H” was a popular long-running TV comedy, but the film remains significantly pricklier.

‘Alex in Wonderland’

The central joke of Paul Mazursky’s clever riff on Fellini’s “8 ½” is that “Alex in Wonderland” was only the second film Mazursky had directed, following “Bob & Ted & Carol & Alice,” and thus he had not nearly the mileage Fellini had accumulated when his onscreen alter ego suffers a nervous breakdown after eight films and major international success. Here, Sutherland has the comic humility to play Mazursky’s hyper-neurotic surrogate, who is rendered nearly catatonic in his panic over his future in Hollywood and whether he should shift to a more commercial direction. It’s an unusual role for Sutherland, whose gravitas makes him more naturally assured, but he’s counterbalanced nicely by Ellen Burstyn as his wife, who manages his ego while exerting a subtle influence over his decision-making.

Even though he plays the title character in Alan Pakula’s nerve-jangling psychological thriller, Sutherland gives a notably understated performance as a small-town detective who journeys to New York to investigate a friend’s disappearance. Though his presence is imposing, even vaguely threatening, Sutherland yields the floor to Jane Fonda’s Oscar-winning turn as a call girl who had the missing man for a client. “Klute” offers more than a few shady customers as suspects, whipping up the creepy ambience Pakula would build around political thrillers like “The Parallax View” and “All the President’s Men,” but Fonda’s tough-minded character works to dispel many of the assumptions around sex work and her damsel-in-distress type.

Nicolas Roeg’s groundbreaking experiment in psychological horror begins with a father who loses his child in a drowning accident, experiencing a grief so profound that it seems to break the film into shards. Sutherland plays that father with intense emotion that curdles into fear and dread as he and his wife (Julie Christie) leave their home in the British countryside for Venice, where he works on restoring an old cathedral. Between their numbing sadness and a city that hums with psychic menace, “Don’t Look Now,” based on a Daphne du Maurier short story, builds toward a shocking, gruesome climax in which the past and the present are suggestively folded together.

Though set in the glamorous world of pre-World War II Hollywood, “The Day of the Locust” evokes the miseries of living on its fringes, focusing on the artisans who populate a rundown apartment building called the San Bernardino Arms. Even within these humble environs, where the residents include a vaudevillian, a dwarf and a would-be child star, Sutherland stands out as Homer Simpson (yes, that’s his name), an accountant whose friendship with an aspiring starlet (Karen Black) edges into creepy obsession. William Atherton, who would become known for playing pompous villains in hits like “Ghostbusters” and “Die Hard,” is a relative Everyman at the film’s center, but John Schlesinger’s rich historical drama moves inexorably toward a nightmarish finale.

After establishing himself as a leading man in Hollywood, Sutherland appeared deep down the cast list of this rambunctious frat-house comedy, but his few scenes make an impression. As an English professor droning on about “Paradise Lost,” Sutherland surprises his apathetic students by sharing their boredom with John Milton, though not enough to absolve them from learning the material anyway. (“I’m not joking,” he deadpans. “This is my job.”) Later, he introduces marijuana to three inexperienced students, gently leading them through a puff-and-pass session that leaves one of them pondering the nature of the universe. He does his best not to betray his annoyance.

The shot of a possessed Sutherland pointing and shrieking is one of the defining images of his career — and certainly the most meme-able — but “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” takes its time getting there, casting him as a San Francisco health inspector who slowly becomes convinced of a conspiracy sweeping the city. In this potent remake of Don Siegel’s 1956 sci-fi horror classic, the laid-back Bay Area vibes turn insidious when some humans start to get replaced by alien duplicates who look like them but behave differently. Alongside a woman (Brooke Adams) who believes her husband isn’t the same man, Sutherland’s inspector scrambles to stop the phenomenon from spreading, but their story is too crazy to be believed.

Though many of his best-selling novels, like “Jurassic Park” and “Disclosure,” were adapted to the screen, Michael Crichton took a crack at directing his own material with “The Great Train Robbery” and proved himself up to the task. In this crackerjack Victorian-era heist picture, photographed in a luscious gold that reflects the bounty, Sean Connery and Sutherland play a master thief and safecracker who team up for the seemingly impossible job of robbing a moving train. Crichton details the physical challenges of accessing the gold on board to suspenseful effect, but the spirit of “The Great Train Robbery” is light and entertaining, cued off Connery and Sutherland’s sly chemistry and banter in the lead roles.

In Robert Redford’s best-picture-winning directorial debut, Sutherland revisits the theme of parental grief that suffused “Don’t Look Now,” but through a much more direct, unadorned lens, emphasizing the long-term problems of a family trying to overcome a loss that’s too immense to bear. Set in an upper-middle-class enclave in suburban Chicago, “Ordinary People” settles on parents (Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore) who have lost their eldest teenage son in a boating accident and are struggling with their youngest (Timothy Hutton), who was institutionalized for four months following a suicide attempt. Sutherland excels as a decent, compassionate father who’s nonetheless searching for answers as the people he loves are gripped by bitterness and survivor’s guilt.

Oliver Stone’s epic conspiracy thriller is the star-laden nucleus of any “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” game, but even in this loaded cast, Sutherland’s turn as Mr. X, a high-level government official with expansive insight into John F. Kennedy’s assassination, stands out. As a New Orleans district attorney, Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner), starts to piece together an investigation that defies the single-shooter conclusions of the Warren Commission report, Mr. X meets with him on the National Mall and delivers a monologue that touches on all the major institutional powers in the United States and the Deep State rationale for killing J.F.K. Even the most hardened skeptics of Stone’s speculative history might find themselves sitting up in their chairs.

‘Six Degrees of Separation’

In the early 1980s, a con man pretending to be the son of the actor Sidney Poitier persuaded a New York couple to allow him to spend the night in their apartment. The couple later told the story of what happened to a friend, the playwright John Guare, who turned it into “Six Degrees of Separation,” a thorny drama about the authentic connection that emerges from deceit. The film doesn’t hide its theatrical roots and why should it? It’s an incredible play and in the adaptation directed by Fred Schepisi, Sutherland is ideally cast alongside Stockard Channing as Fifth Avenue empty-nesters who prove uniquely vulnerable to a charismatic stranger (Will Smith) with a compelling story. He may be a hustler, but his effect on their lives proves surprisingly seismic.

‘Without Limits’

The long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine was the subject of two biopics in as many years — the first was simply called “Prefontaine” — but Robert Towne’s “Without Limits” was the most persuasive, thanks in no small part to Sutherland’s touching performance as the legendary coach Bill Bowerman. Much like Towne’s previous track movie, “Personal Best,” there’s an emphasis on the intense intimacy and psychological stress of training for elite competition, though as the undersized Prefontaine, Billy Crudup carries himself with joyful self-assurance. His record-breaking ascendence under Bowerman’s guidance in the early ’70s, followed by his 1975 death in a car accident at 24, inspires Towne to memorialize him as the James Dean of his sport.

‘Space Cowboys’

His character’s not going to get a statue for it, but Sutherland’s geriatric astronaut in Clint Eastwood’s irresistible science-fiction comedy stands to be surely be the first denture-wearer in outer space. As one of four long-retired Air Force test pilots who missed their shot to join NASA 40 years earlier — Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones and James Garner play the others — Sutherland enters a rigorous training program with his friends, who are sent to prevent an archaic Soviet communications satellite from crashing to Earth. Their expertise on the satellite’s outdated electronics system is considered essential enough to justify the folly of relying on old men who are decades past their physical primes. The cast makes the prospect very silly, but not laughable.

‘Pride and Prejudice’

So much of Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice” and this lovely adaptation pivots on four of the Bennet sisters and the suitors their mother (Brenda Blethyn) considers proper marriage material, particularly the relationship between the headstrong Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and the taciturn Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen). Yet every minute Sutherland gets onscreen as Mr. Bennet is full of feeling, as he gracefully manages the chaos whipped up by the courtship process before proudly and tearfully offering his consent. Sutherland looks so utterly at ease in the role that his show of love for Elizabeth at a crucial moment pierces the heart unexpectedly.

‘The Hunger Games’

As Coriolanus Snow, the sinister president of Panem in “The Hunger Games” and its sequels, Sutherland carries the laconic bearing of a despot whose power is totally secure — at least, for the moment. When the 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) takes her younger sister’s place in the 74th Hunger Games — a televised free-for-all where two children from each of the country’s 12 districts fight to the death — Snow finally meets his match. As Katniss’s success in the arena turns her into a revolutionary figurehead, cracks starts to develop in Snow’s confident façade and Sutherland starts flashing an anger that betrays a growing insecurity. Their rivalry carries over into all four adaptations of Suzanne Collins’s popular YA series.
