Have you ever had a terrible tour guide? Someone who wasn't very likable, wasn't very knowledgeable, didn't have a good command of the group, was boring and unengaging?

Not our tour Guides! They are the best. They will make a believer out of you. Not just in ghosts, but in how awesome a properly guided tour can be. Our guides take their role seriously - they are guiding you through 300 years of history, in places that have been evidently haunted, almost weekly, since they were discovered.

Have you ever heard of a “memory palace”? It's a technique used by memory athletes to remember fantastic amounts of information with perfect recall, in a short period of time. What you do is, you associate different imagery and stories with different features of locations you're familiar with (like different rooms in your house).

If you've only got a couple days in town, maybe you're with your significant other, or maybe you're with your friends, or even your whole family, and you're spending your precious paid time off here in Williamsburg, so that every move you make counts… then you simply must come visit us.

Did you know the hormones our bodies release when we're thrilled have an influence on attraction? It's why roller-coasters make such a great first date. This has been studied over and over, but it's worth repeating here. If you're taking someone on a date, and you're looking to have a lot of fun together, or to increase attraction for each other, it's a good idea to find something that gets the blood pumping. The best activities are even a little scary, like a roller coaster. Or a haunted old church.

What is it worth to take a trip with your family that actually brings everyone together, even if it's just for an hour or two? Family vacations can be stressful, and sometimes it can be a real pain to get everyone to get into the spirit doing the same thing, without whining or eyes rolling. And how many memories do we really get to have fun reminiscing over as the years pass?

US Ghost Adventure tours are the real deal. One of the first things you'll notice, that makes us different than the other ghost tours in town, is we don't walk the traditional paths. And we don't use silly costumes or lanterns. Why? Because we only walk the paths of the stories we have fact-checked and verified. We explore real haunted sites across the U.S.

Icon

US Ghost Adventure tours are easy to fit into most schedules, because we run late in the evening. We have different start times in the evening to choose from, including with ghost tours starting at 8pm and 9pm, and the Ultimate tour at 10pm. Finally, at 90-125 minutes long, you can almost always find a tour that fits your schedule.

This is our favorite. Not long ago, a pop-science article was published that claimed the Large Hadron Collider at CERN had debunked ghosts. In reality, a scientist named Brian Cox mused that if there were a medium that could preserve a person (something like a 'soul'), he believes he would have seen evidence of it in his particle physics work.

Home » Ghost Tour Locations » Myrtle Beach Ghost Tour » Myrtle Beach Boardwalk And Promenade

The heart of Myrtle Beach’s tourism scene doubles as the site where disease, disasters, and death ravished those who came before us. By day, Myrtle Beach’s Boardwalk and Promenade is host to great food and lively entertainment and sees hundreds of visitors from all over partake in all it has to offer. But as the day winds down, the dead rise up , restless from unfinished business and untimely demise and ready to reclaim their former lives.

Myrtle Beach’s Misfortune by The Ocean

Before the city blossomed into the beachside dream it is today, Myrtle Beach was an uninhabited stretch of coastline that would eventually become home to the Waccamaw Indians. The tribe would be the first group of unfortunate souls to experience the wrath of unforgiving times. European settlers would ultimately push the tribe out in an attempt to colonize the land. Their attempt was futile, however, as bad weather and disease prevented the settlers from prospering.

Their wretched misfortune would carry on like a curse and spread to the coastline’s future inhabitants. Along with a few other families, the Withers Family settled in the area only to nearly be wiped out by a hurricane, with 18 of their family members tragically perishing and the remaining fleeing Myrtle Beach. The city would later come to fruition, but not without becoming a beacon for the supernatural. Whether it’s the location by the ocean or the trials and tribulations experienced, this one-mile stretch of coastline is notorious for unexplained activity and terrifying sightings.

Gateway to The Mystic

The Boardwalk and Promenade in Myrtle Beach harbor a postcard-like landscape that delights vacationers year-round. Yet with all its charm, it can’t hide the horrors of its origins:

Death and Devastation

  • Lives Claimed by Contagions and Catastrophes like the Hurricane of 1822
  • Unfortunate Deaths from Railroad Construction

Restless Souls Left Behind

  • Victims of the Hurricane Whose Bodies Were Never Recovered
  • Deceased Railroad Workers Whose Spirits Were Trapped

Beyond the lives claimed by contagions and catastrophes, the coastline along the Boardwalk and Promenade has also become the scene for unearthly sightings that have been solidified as local legends. While Myrtle Beach’s tourist gem continues to grow and add to its entertainment value, it still can’t distract from the terrors lurking in the picturesque views’ dark corners.

Are the Dearly Departed Withers Still Stuck Seaside?

Following the hurricane of 1822 that consumed several members of the Withers clan, the Burroughs and Collins Company purchased what remained of the land and converted it into land for the railroad. The dangers of constructing the railroad were at their peak in those days, resulting in several unfortunate deaths. On any given night, the sounds of the ocean are mixed with the sound of a phantom train whistle and the blood-curdling wails of those that perished in unimaginable ways.

Whether it’s the painful cries of deceased railroad workers or the agonizing screams of the Withers family being washed away is not completely known. However, sightings by tourists and locals may offer some insight as apparitions of men and women dressed in dated clothing can often be seen walking along the beach – and they’re not alone. Shocking sightings of Native Americans have also been spotted along the coastline, replaying a period of time when they were unable to die.

The Gray Man

The Boardwalk and Promenade in Myrtle Beach are one of the most popular tourist spots in the country, yet its prevalence has a rival: the Gray Man. The Gray Man’s anguished ghostly existence is the result of a distressing end caused by an unfortunate twist of fate when he and his horse got caught in quicksand.

It’s said that he can be spotted in pirate-style clothing, walking along the shores just before a hurricane is set to hit. Following his horrendous death, he appeared before his fiance to warn her of the hurricane of 1822, the same hurricane that claimed the lives of 18 Withers’.

While his sightings are few and far between, they are not without merit as they tend to signify a potential natural disaster. The last sighting of the Gray Man occurred right before Hurricane Florence struck the Carolinas. Whether his presence serves as a warning for the people of Myrtle Beach or his profound distress is the cause of it, should you spot the Gray Man, you’re wise to take shelter and brace yourself.

Myrtle Beach’s Pirates of The South

Like any city by the water, Myrtle Beach is home to sordid tales of the sea, and the Boardwalk and Promenade were built in the very spot these tales originated. One of the most infamous pirates in history who was known for plundering the coast of South Carolina and was no stranger to the area. Blackbeard and his crew were feared as they were a ruthless bunch that terrorized anyone in their path.

Blackbeard would eventually be captured and killed for his crimes, and while his final resting place is a mystery, it’s believed that his grave lies along the shore. He may be long gone, but his wickedness lives on. His spirit is frequently seen walking the coast, possibly searching for ships to plunder.

The Boardwalk and Promenade Today

Though it’s filled with modern events and attractions that lure visitors from all over the country, Myrtle Beach’s Boardwalk and Promenade is a one-mile stretch of fascinating and sometimes terrifying history. A visit to this popular tourist spot is also a visit to a painful and otherworldly past that continues to haunt the area and spook anyone who encounters the ghostly residents that remain.

A Stretch of Beauty and Barbarity

Since its launch in 2010, Myrtle Beach’s Boardwalk and Promenade has enhanced the vacation scene and boosted tourism. Visitors can expect a variety of family-friendly activities to participate in and plenty of entertainment for all ages, but they should also expect the unexpected.

From the original inhabitants of Myrtle Beach to apparitions predicting a catastrophe, there’s nothing you won’t see at Myrtle Beach’s Boardwalk and Promenade. Check out our blog to discover more entities that frequent the nation’s most popular vacation spots, and check back for future posts.

So, are you ready to get your Grand Strand-style spook on? Here are the 10 most haunted places near Myrtle Beach guaranteed to provide you plenty of thrills and chills:

1 | Alice Flagg Grave, All Saints Episcopal Church Cemetery, Pawleys Island | Few South Carolina ghost legends have more staying power than the strange tale of Alice Flagg, whose final resting place can be visited at the All Saints Episcopal Church cemetery (which dates to 1822) in Pawleys Island, one of the oldest summer resorts on the East Coast. According to legend, the restless ghost of Alice roams the cemetery in a white dress, desperately searching for her lost engagement ring (her father disapproved of her wedding plans and reportedly threw the ring into a marsh in total disgust). Just seek out the large flat tombstone under an oak tree inscribed, “ALICE.” For those who wish to summon Alice’s spirit, the legend goes that you simply need to walk backwards around the grave 13 times while saying her name out twice. In addition, several visitors over the years have even felt slight tugs on their wedding rings as they approach Alice’s gravesite. By the way, literary buffs will want to know that notable poet and novelist James Dickey (Deliverance) is also buried in the graveyard at All Saints Episcopal Church.

2 | Brentwood Restaurant & Wine Bistro, Little River | Considered the most haunted restaurant in South Carolina, the Brentwood Restaurant in Little River is housed in the historic 1910 Queen Anne-style Essie May McCorsley House (complete with a wraparound porch, of course) and even offers a special Ghost Dinner & Tour (reservations can be made online). Previously known as Aunt Mary’s, Grandma Mary’s and Papa Dees, the Brentwood Restaurant was opened in 2007 by the Stublick brothers (who named it from where they hailed from – Brentwood, Long Island). Over the years, Brentwood employees have noticed strange occurrences at the eatery such as objects moving on their own (including wine glasses smashing to the floor), unexplained noises and even ghostly apparitions sighted in the upstairs windows. Oh, by the way, the South Carolina wine bistro specializes in delicious French cuisine.

Lucas Bay Light, Conway | 10 Haunted Places To Visit In Myrtle Beach

3 | Lucas Bay Light, Conway | Local legend claims that the mysterious Lucas Bay Light that can frequently be seen in the swamp off Gilbert Road in Conway emanates from the ghost of a Civil War-era mother searching desperately for her lost child, who disappeared during a flash flood. Of course, there is no historical evidence to back up this immensely popular Palmetto State urban legend, but that doesn’t stop hordes of thrill seekers from heading out in search of the origin of the Lucas Bay Light on a nightly basis (especially around Halloween). Neighboring North Carolina has a similar mysterious phenomenon that can be viewed off certain overlooks along the Blue Ridge Parkway called the Brown Mountain Lights.

4 | The Bowery, Myrtle Beach | A Myrtle Beach landmark since 1944 and billed as “The 8th Wonder of the World,” the world-famous Bowery (which celebrated its 75th anniversary in February 2019) is widely known for its great live music featuring house band The Bounty Hunters, juicy burgers, ice-cold drinks, friendly atmosphere … and ghostly activity! According to legend, a man known as “Barman Joe” died suddenly at his barstool, but miraculously sprang to life soon thereafter just long enough to finish off his brew. To this day, bar patrons report occasionally hearing Barman Joe singing near the bar. By the way, country supergroup Alabama, which was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005, served as the house band at The Bowery for much of the 1970s.

5 | The Gray Man, Pawleys Island | One of the most popular South Carolina haunted legends is that of the so-called “Gray Man,” who allegedly makes an occasional appearance on the beach to warn local residents of impending hurricanes and other major storms heading toward Pawleys Island. Believe it or not, the first documented sighting of the Gray Man dates back to 1822 and the most recent sighting happened just before Hurricane Florence hit the East Coast in 2018. The Gray Man received national exposure when the Pawleys Island legend was highlighted in a 1990 episode of the TV show Unsolved Mysteries just a year after Hurricane Hugo hit the South Carolina coast and, more recently, in a 2014 episode of American Supernatural on The Weather Channel.

6 | Old Gunn Church, Georgetown | Established in 1729, Georgetown, South Carolina’s third-oldest city, which is located less than an hour south of Myrtle Beach, has accumulated its fair share of ghostly legends over the years. One haunted historic site, the ruins of the Old Gunn Church (AKA Prince Frederick’s Chapel), which was completed in 1876, allegedly has generated intense paranormal activity over the years. According to legend, Mr. Gunn, the Gothic Revival-style church’s contractor, died after falling off the steep roof and his “restless spirit” continues to haunt the church grounds to this day. Visitors to this haunted landmark on Plantersville Road have reported hearing screams (as well as music from a phantom church choir) and viewing strange lights emanating from the church’s tower. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the ruins of Old Gunn Church are cordoned off by a barbed-wire fence.

7 | Colonel Kolb’s Tomb, Bennettsville | Both ghost hunters and Revolutionary War buffs alike may want to make a road trip from Myrtle Beach way off the beaten path to Marlboro County to visit the allegedly haunted tomb of Colonel Abel Kolb (1750 – 1781), who was shot and burned alive along with his entire family by British loyalists during the American Revolution. According to local legend, visitors to the tomb at night occasionally hear the sound of someone wandering through the woods and some have even reported seeing the apparition of Colonel Kolb, who served under the command of General Francis “The Swamp Fox” Marion, standing right next to them. Unfortunately, Col. Kolb’s tomb has been the subject of vandalism over the years, so please take nothing but photos if you plan to pay your respects to the Revolutionary War hero and troubled soul.

8 | Georgetown Lighthouse, Georgetown | Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and located in the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center Heritage Preserve on North Island near the mouth of Winyah Bay, the Georgetown Lighthouse is simply one of the most haunted lighthouses in South Carolina. The current lighthouse, which stands 85 feet high and features 124 steps to the top, is the state’s oldest active lighthouse and apparently home to several restless spirits. Visitors to the lighthouse have reported the sounds of footsteps in the tower along with sightings of a ghost named “Annie,” the daughter of a lightkeeper, who drowned in the surf many years ago. According to legend, Annie’s ghost occasionally appears on the decks on nearby ships to warn sailors of impending storms. Although the Georgetown Lighthouse is currently not open to the public, several Georgetown tour companies take visitors out to North Island to see the haunted light.

9 | Hampton Plantation, McClellanville | Now both a State Historic Site and National Historic Landmark, the pre-Revolutionary War-era Hampton Plantation, which encompasses a Georgian-style mansion and beautiful grounds along the banks of Hampton Creek, gives South Carolina visitors a fascinating glimpse of life on a colonial-era rice plantation. Established in 1735, Hampton Plantation was last owned by Archibald Rutledge (1883-1973), South Carolina’s first poet laureate. It is also widely known for its restless spirits, including a “weeping ghost” often viewed in a rocking chair that rocks itself on the front porch, as well as mysterious noises coming from the master bedroom!

10 | Strand Theater, Georgetown | Originally opened in 1941 as a movie theater, the historic Strand Theater in downtown Georgetown is now home to the Swamp Fox Players. Ghostly occurrences that have been reported at the Strand Theater over the years include strange footsteps backstage, cold spots and unexplained voices. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Strand Theater served as a filming location for Made in Heaven, a 1987 fantasy-comedy film that starred Timothy Hutton and Kelly McGillis (with surprising cameos from none other than Neil Young, Tom Petty and Ric Ocasek of The Cars). The Strand’s old-time box office was built especially for the movie.

Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp, Bishopville | 10 Haunted Places To Visit In Myrtle Beach

BONUS: | Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp, Bishopville | Legendary mysterious creatures abound in every state from Florida’s “Skunk Ape” to Washington’s “Batsquatch.” However, few mythical beasts seem to inspire more terror than the dreaded Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp of Bishopville, South Carolina! Also known as the “Monster of Bishopville” and “Lizard Man of Lee County,” this huge, 7-foot-tall reptilian creature with glowing red eyes allegedly stalks the swamp just outside Bishopville (population: 3,238), where it was reportedly first spotted in 1988 by a hapless motorist changing his tire on a dirt road (fortunately he was able to flee from the scene, but only after the mythical monster jumped on the car’s roof and even left bite marks on the vehicle!). Indeed, the snarling swamp beast has become so legendary in these parts through the years that it was featured in a 2012 episode of the Syfy series, Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files, titled “Reptile Rampage.” In addition, the South Carolina Cotton Museum in Bishopville even devotes a colorful exhibit that depicts the legend of the Lizard Man: “Is it a mutant from the swamp? A rare Bigfoot? A bear or other animal distorted by the moonlight? … A zany – and, so far, successful hoax?” By the way, the latest sighting of the Lizard Man (captured for posterity in a grainy photo image) looks rather suspiciously like a man in a rubberized lizard costume!

Lucky for us, this tour was available in Myrtle Beach. In a 2 hour tour we were driven all over Myrtle Beach and got a good overview of the city, its place in history and in particular movies that were filmed there and music. (Admittedly we know little about music so that part was less interesting to us.) Catherine, the tour guide, was very knowledgeable and passionate about the area. The bus was comfortable. We even received a complimentary book authored by Catherine. An enjoyable way to spend 2 hours. 13 Chilling Mysteries: Ghost Tours & Pirates of Myrtle Beach

Posted by Sandy Richardson on June 25, 2015

If you take the scenic routes, a short drive north, west, or south of Myrtle Beach, the pines, palms, and oaks alongside the roads begin to hug the shoulders a bit tighter. The sun shines a bit dimmer. Spanish moss grows a bit thicker; the marshes and swamps appear deeper and vaster. So please be wary. Don’t blink, and do listen carefully. You’re entering the land of legends, ghosts, and pirates in Myrtle Beach.

1) Blackbeard’s Final Resting Place

Blackbeard

The sleepy town of Little River (the oldest settlement in Horry County) dozes alongside its namesake, the Little River. Though you wouldn’t know it today, this quiet town was once the refuge of pirates seeking safe havens, resting ports, and treasure vaults. It was a favorite of Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard.

Blackbeard was captured and killed in a fierce sea battle with Lt. Robert Maynard. Beheaded, his body was thrown overboard and his head hung from the ship’s tall beam. Legend has it that he swam around the boat six times before sinking into the deep. Many have seen the tall, headless body of Blackbeard roaming the beaches or swimming underwater, sometimes accompanied by an eerie glow. Locals say he wanders in search of his treasure and, of course, his missing head.

When you visit Little River, take advantage of chartered fishing trips, La Belle Amie Vineyard for wine tastings and concerts. And don’t forget the two Las Vegas-style casino gambling boats docked in the international waters. There’s also the Blue Crab Festival in May, a Shrimp and Jazz Festival, and an Oktoberfest to entertain you.

What you need to know littleriversc.com Address: Little River, SC

2) Strange Happenings at Brentwood Wine Bistro

Brentwood Wine Bistro Haunted

The centuries old southern town that it is, Little River holds other mesmerizing haunts. The Brentwood Restaurant Wine Bistro  boasts its own ghosts. When the new owners purchased the property, they rearranged some of the furnishings. But one picture when relocated to a different wall, almost scared them away. When the picture was moved, glasses flew from the shelves, shattering and glittering across the old floors. A dark figure is said to loom on the staircase, and a human face often appears in an old mirror, trapped between this world and the next. Paranormal investigators, as well as visitors, have tried with no luck to coax the spirit to move on. Oh, they also do some great cooking here too. While you’re there, it’s okay to indulge in some delicious low country French cuisine for brunch, lunch, or dinner.

(The restaurant offers vegetarian, gluten free, and a children’s menu. There’s also Happy Hour @ The Wine Bistro from 4-6 pm.)

3) ‘Terror Under the Bridge’

Terror Under the Bridge

Perched on the waters of the Waccamaw River, Conway is another quaint town , home to one of the scariest haunted excursions that you can take in South Carolina. The old warehouse under the Main Street Bridge has been studied by ghost hunters and visitors alike. Professionals insist paranormal activity abounds within the old walls. I’d recommend taking a ghost tour to see for yourself. Tour proceeds benefit Fostering Hope Inc., supporting children in the foster care system in several nearby counties.

4) Conway’s Not So Scary Side

Conway, SC Riverwalk

When in Conway, enjoy the riverfront walk and charming park . Stroll through the beautiful marina and explore the arboretum and history of this quaint town. L.W. Paul Historical Farm  offers a trip back in time where you can participate in the daily farm activities of a hundred years ago. A guided river kayak tour  provides both fun and education! There are also several fresh fish markets where you can purchase cooked or raw fresh seafood. If you plan on eating lunch or dinner here, I’d recommend K.C.’s Deli and Crafty Rooster (link these). For shopping, check out Bodega (link this) for South Carolina souvenirs, or enjoy a stroll through the fine antique shops (link this), and Farmer’s Market (link this) open every Saturday from May through October.

9) The Tale of Drunken Jack

The Tale of Drunken Jack, Myrtle Beach

Legend has it that early in the 1600’s, Blackbeard anchored off a small island across from Murrell’s Inlet. There, he and his crewmen unloaded and buried a large quantity of purloined rum. A wild night of dining, drinking, and devilry followed as the men, among them Blackbeard’s crewman, Jack, enjoyed a few of the hijacked kegs. Collapsing in drunken stupors, the pirates snored through the night and rose early to cast away for the Caribbean...All except poor Jack. The rest of the crew came under attack and couldn’t make it back until two years later. When they returned to the island they found 32 empty rum kegs, and among the ruins, lay the bleached brittle bones of old Jack. In memory of their shipmate, the island became known as Drunken Jack’s. Today pirates and their mates dine at the popular Drunken Jack’s Restaurant  overlooking the site where the drunken (and presumably happy) pirate lived out his last days.

Enjoy the rum and other libations in the lounge, then eat your fill of the delicious hush-puppies dipped in honey butter, the fresh salad bar, the land-lubbers steak or burger, or any of the fine seafood bounty offered, all while enjoying nightly entertainment. Blackbeard would be envious, and you might just decide to stay behind with old Jack’s bones.

10) Lost Treasure at Atalaya Castle

Lost Treasure of Atalaya Castle

At the heart of Huntington Beach State Park , sits a grand castle—Atalaya . Built by the wealthy Huntingtons, Atalaya served as the couple’s retreat and at their deaths, was donated to the state of South Carolina. The Huntingtons hired a man called Old Joe to do odd jobs during the construction of Brookgreen Gardens, but Old Joe was a bit hapless. He wrecked his vehicle on his first day of work and feared he would be unemployed again during those desperate years of the Great Depression. But the Huntingtons kept him on, giving him other jobs, more important jobs, over time. One of those jobs was to guard a table of gold for his employer. Mr. Huntington called Old Joe to help him move an old oak table, and there to poor Joe’s astonishment were mounds of gold spilling over the top of the table. Gold coins of every size covered its surface. Mr. Huntington left Old Joe to guard the fortune all night, and so he did. The next day, Joe was excused from his guard, never told where the gold came from or where it went. No sign of the vast treasure was ever seen again.

Atalaya offers a spooky ghost tour by flashlight and tales of local folklore to anyone interested in braving the adventure. Call for fees and reservations, please.

And just across the highway, stop by Brookgreen Gardens . Behind the beauty of the great sculpture gardens lay many secret tales.  Go explore the art, the plants, and the ghostly tale of blood stains in the old barn.

11) Pirates and Ghosts Murrells Inlet

These tours explore the rich history of ghostly activity and hauntings along the stretch of inlet waters. Hear riveting stories of pirates like Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard. Or wander the dark streets to hear chilling accounts of even scarier tales. Several plantations offer tours of the homes and grounds and recounting of haunting apparitions.

12) Tragedy of Sweet Alice Flagg

Alice Flagg's Grave

Beneath ancient oaks and palmetto trees just off the main highway in Pawley’s, a narrow road leads to All Saint’s Church . The church has graced these hallowed grounds since 1739. A few ghosts walk here as well. Take for instance, the beautiful Alice Flagg. As sister to the wealthy Dr. Allard Flagg, Alice was expected to marry well. But the fates had other plans. Alice fell in love with a lumberman. Of course, Dr. Flagg intended to put an end to this, and he ordered Alice to return the lumberman’s ring and sent her away to boarding school.

There, Alice developed malaria and returned home to Pawley’s. When she died, Dr. Flagg discovered the ring still secreted around poor Alice’s neck, and in his grief and anger, he threw the ring into the marsh. He buried his sister beneath a simple concrete slab in All Saint’s cemetery, inscribed with only her name: Alice.

For years, many people have glimpsed the ghost of Alice wandering the cemetery and surrounding marsh looking for her ring. It is said if a person can walk backwards thirteen times around her grave without stumbling, Alice will appear and will find her treasured ring.

In the shadowy coolness there, I’ve managed seven laps before tripping over something invisible—a tree root, a tangled ball of Spanish moss, or perhaps Alice herself reached up to catch hold of me. But maybe you’ll have better luck.

13) “The Good Ghost:” Gray Man of Pawley’s Island Fame

Gray Man of Pawley's Island

Ask any local about the story of the Gray Man, and you will get the same answer: “He’s a good ghost.” Legend has it that, after a long absence, a young man eager to see his fiancée took his horse on a shortcut through the marsh between Georgetown and Pawley’s Island. Deep within the tangled roots of palms and oaks, the poor man traveled the unmarked way. His horse quickly fell into quicksand and both the horse and the young suitor were swallowed up. Devastated by his death, the young fiancé walked the beaches, mourning her lover, inconsolable in her grief. One day as she walked, a man dressed in gray appeared some yards away. As she approached, the young lady recognized him as her lost love. He warned her of a coming storm and that she must flee the island at once. But when she reached to embrace him, the apparition disappeared. The young woman, grief-stricken again returned home to tell her parents of the experience, and they, fearing she had lost her mind (or maybe fearing the storm), packed up and left for the mainland immediately. Days later after the storm passed, the young woman’s home was the only one left standing.

Since that time, other sightings have occurred. In 1893, as the Sea Islands Hurricane approached, the Gray Man appeared to warn the Lachicotte family. An estimated 1500 people died in the storm, but the Lachicottes, trusting the dark apparition, had fled to safety.

October of 1954 found Bill Collins and his new bride enjoying the balmy weather on their honeymoon. But early one morning, a knock on the door roused Bill and a man dressed in wrinkled clothing and with a gray hat shielding his features stood before him. The urgency in the man’s voice convinced Bill to waken his wife and flee the island. The Category 4 storm named Hazel killed 95 people and destroyed 15,000 homes.

Others have also met this “good ghost.” September 1989 found Clara and Jack Moore walking the beach when a man in gray appeared from behind the dunes. He walked toward them, and simply vanished before their eyes. Clara, knowing of the legend, took it to heart and insisted she and her husband leave the island. Two days later, Hurricane Hugo ravaged the coast and the midlands of South Carolina killing 76 people in all and running damages into billions of dollars.

So if you meet this kindly ghost, please heed his warnings. He’s never been wrong before.

For more ghostly entertainment or stories of lore, visit nearby Georgetown, an historic village by the sea with its own hauntings to share. You won’t be disappointed!

25 Best Things to Do in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Planning a trip to the Grand Strand? These activities and attractions in Myrtle Beach will keep everyone in your group happy.

myrtle beach haunted tours

Located in the middle of the Grand Strand that stretches for 60 miles along South Carolina's Atlantic Coast, Myrtle Beach attracts tourists galore with its bustling oceanfront boardwalk, gorgeous beaches, golf courses, nightlife, and more. While summer is a popular time to visit, it's a year-round destination with attractions for every season, travel style, and budget.

Here are 25 fun things to do in Myrtle Beach, from soaring above the sandy strip to embracing your inner pirate on a themed cruise — this is the old stomping ground of Blackbeard and the gang, after all.

See Myrtle Beach from above on the SkyWheel.

Take in miles of Myrtle Beach's skyline and ocean views from the SkyWheel , a 200-foot Ferris wheel with snazzy all-glass, gondola-style boxes that allow 360-degree views from high up. For a VIP experience, you and three friends can lounge on leather seats in your own glass-floored car.

Race along the tracks in go-karts.

Head to The Track for a go-kart ride on the Mighty Myrtle elevated track, where drivers ride up three and a half stories and circle back down with an exciting drop at the end. At the Broadway Grand Prix , seven go-kart tracks range from the Pro Track for experienced drivers to the Family Track for all levels. There's also a Junior Racer and Kids Track so everyone can get behind the wheel for some driving fun.

Root for the home team.

For some local baseball action, check out the Myrtle Beach Pelicans , a Single-A Affiliate team of the Chicago Cubs. Promotions include Fireworks Fridays and a chance for kids ages 12 and under to run the bases after every game.

Soak up the sun at the beach

Myrtle Beach is home to dozens of public beaches that are perfect for sunning, swimming, surfing, wading, and searching for seashells and shark teeth along the shore. Several beaches offer wheelchair access as well as chairs equipped with balloon tires, making them more accessible to everyone.

Explore the shore by Jet Ski or banana boat.

Ride with your group of three to 10 on a banana boat, a yellow banana-shaped tube that's towed through the waves. You can choose from several Myrtle Beach companies, including Downwind Sails and Express Watersports . Rent a Jet Ski to speed through the ocean at your own pace, or join a tour for a guided excursion through the Intracoastal Waterway's tributaries for sightseeing and fun. Companies such as Island Adventure Watersports and Express Watersports offer rentals and tours.

Go on a guided kayak tour.

Penny Britt / Getty Images

Take a guided kayak tour through Myrtle Beach's streams and backwaters to experience the unique environments and wildlife of the area, including the Waccamaw River, marshes, and local islands. Tours are offered by J & L Kayakin g and Great Escapes Kayak Expeditions , among other locally owned companies.

Keep an eye out for dolphins.

Go on a cruise to see dolphins swimming alongside the boat, or spend a day deep-sea fishing with one of several Myrtle Beach companies such as Voyager or Hurricane Fleet . You can also soar over the area on a parasail adventure for a bird's-eye view of Myrtle Beach and the Atlantic. Feel the breeze, spot some dolphins, and enjoy a thrilling experience with Downwind Sails, Express Watersports, or New Wave Watersports .

Hit the water on your own.

Take out a pontoon boat, stand-up paddleboard, canoe, or scuba gear from one of the many Myrtle Beach rental companies to explore the area at your own pace. There are plenty of places to go on the river as well as along the coast.

Play classic arcade games.

Kids of all ages (or anyone who considers themselves to be young at heart) will have a blast at the  Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum . It costs $12 per hour to access to the interactive museum's 26 vintage pinball machines from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. You won't have to worry about digging for loose change or purchasing tokens — once inside, all machines are set to free play, so you can spend every minute just enjoying the game.

Tee off at top golf courses.

More than 90 public, private, and semi-private golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area make it a favorite destination for golf fans from all over. Consider the variety of price ranges, landscapes, and courses designed by famed golf course architects like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Robert Trent Jones, every golfer can find the perfect place to play.

Opt for a kid-friendly miniature golf course.

Jeffrey Greenberg / Universal Images Group via Getty Images

For family fun and entertainment, Myrtle Beach boasts more than 50 miniature golf courses, with a variety of themes, prices, and locations to choose from. Even if you're not traveling with kids, it's a great date-night activity or a fun way to strike up a little friendly competition. Some of the most popular courses include the Atlantis-themed Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf , Neverland-inspired Captain Hook's Adventure Golf , and the indoor-outdoor Cancun Lagoon .

Visit a world-class art museum.

Once you've had your fill of the beach, head inside to check out the impressive permanent collection of Southern art, antique maps, historical prints, and crafts at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum . Don't forget to stop by the gift shop to pick up souvenirs in the form of books, jewelry, stationery, or home decor.

Listen to live music for free.

There's nothing like stumbling upon a band or musician putting on a great show, especially when it's free. That's what you get during the Music on Main Concert Series on Main Street, running perpendicular to Ocean Boulevard, in North Myrtle Beach. The series takes place on Thursdays from June through September.

Get hands-on at the Children's Museum.

Traveling with little ones? Head to the EdVenture Children’s Museum , where kids can get in on the action with immersive exhibits showing them how things work at a supermarket, at the beach (geared toward ages three and under), in a cafe, and at the doctor's and dentist's office. Other displays focus on STEM topics such as space and flight, while a few more take a closer look at auto mechanics, motor skills and balance, performing arts, construction, art, magnets, and wind tunnels.

Admire plants and animals at Brookgreen Gardens.

Brookgreen Garden s is home to 9,127 acres featuring stunning botanical gardens, an extensive collection of American sculptures, the Lowcountry Zoo, and the Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve. Whether you make time to visit just one or several of these attractions, you're in for a real treat.

Take in the area's natural beauty.

Luckily for nature lovers, the area is home to two state parks that are both worth visiting. Make time for Myrtle Beach State Park , an oceanfront destination with nature trails, bike paths, equestrian trails, a fishing pier, and several picnic areas. Located at the southern end of Myrtle Beach, there's also Huntington Beach State Park , which has 2,500 acres of hiking trails, marshes, bays, and opportunities for overnight camping.

Sip the day away at a nearby winery.

Duplin Winery is a great place to sample a variety of sweet vino while enjoying cheese, crackers, and a virtual tour of its Rose Hill, North Carolina, home base. As part of the tour, you'll have a chance to hand-bottle your own wine to take home. Nearby, Carolina Vineyards Winery , located near the Intracoastal Waterway in North Myrtle Beach, offers a variety of tastings, including frozen wine during the summer.

Sample local beers at a microbrewery.

New South Brewing , a microbrewery in Myrtle Beach that's been open since 1998, serves ales, lagers, IPAs, and seasonal specialties such as Oktoberfest and Dark Star Porter. Meanwhile, Tidal Creek Brewhouse offers not just small-batch craft beers but also freshly brewed coffee and Lowcountry food favorites like fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits.

Geek out over classic cars.

Classic car enthusiasts can geek out over all their favorite models at the  Wheels of Yesteryear Vintage Automobile Museum . Open in Myrtle Beach since 2009, the museum showcases a collection of more than 150 American-made cars and trucks that husband-and-wife founders Paul and Carol Cummings have been assembling over decades. Visit the gift shop to pick up nostalgic die-cast collectible versions of your favorite vehicles, plus shirts and other car-centric souvenirs.

Learn about wildlife at Ripley's Aquarium.

Courtesy of Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach

Don't miss  Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach ; not only is it a wonderful place to view sea creatures like stingrays up close, but also sloths and other South American critters. Check the website before you go to book additional experiences such as behind-the-scenes tours of the Marine Science Center, penguin encounters, glass-bottom boat rides, sleepover parties, or the ever-popular Breakfast With a Mermaid event.

Embrace your inner pirate.

Get ready to don cheesy pirate gear and practice your best "Arrrrrrr!" Myrtle Beach — and the entire Carolina coast, for that matter — was once a haven for Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, and heaps of other infamous pirates back in the day, so why not get in on some family-friendly pirate action on a themed cruise while you're in town? Blackbeard’s Pirate Cruise  and  Pirate Adventures of Myrtle Beach each offer kid-friendly sailings that might include temporary pirate tattoos, costumes for the kiddos, stories about those who once sailed through these waters, or a treasure-seeking adventure that ends in an epic water cannon battle.

Cruise the Intracoastal Waterway on a riverboat.

If you'd like to enjoy a boat ride that's a little less pirate-y, you can always opt to cruise the Intracoastal Waterway on the  Barefoot Queen riverboat instead. She features several indoor and outdoor decks to spread out on, with onboard narration and entertainment, as well as a fully stocked bar to enjoy while you take in views of the surrounding area. Scenic daytime and lunch cruises are 1.5 hours long, while dinner cruises last two hours.

Master the waves at Kokopelli Surf Camp.

Pick up a new beach hobby at Kokopelli Surf Camp , which runs group and private lessons designed for every level, whether you're just starting out or want to brush up on your skills. Three-day camp sessions are also offered for kids, while surfboard rentals are available if you'd rather do your own thing.

Experience early-1900s farm life.

Part of the Horry County Museum, the L.W. Paul Living History Farm  lets you see what it was like to live in the area as a farmer between 1900 and 1955. Demonstrations and presentations change seasonally according to what's happening on the farm. Guided tours are free and last about an hour, so it's worth checking out if you're suddenly craving a little time away from the beach.

Tour a popular local distillery.

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Twelve 33 Distillery for a chance to see how some of your favorite spirits are created "from grain to glass," and how locally sourced ingredients make the craft cocktails served here really stand out. Among the distillery's specialties are several types of rye whiskey, spiced rum, vodka, and gin with ties to South Carolina's prohibition era. Pro tip: book the VIP tour to enjoy a special tasting flight in the distillery's secret speakeasy.

Man charged in Doc Antle’s money laundering case sentenced to prison

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - A U.S. district judge has sentenced a Murrells Inlet man connected to Myrtle Beach Safari owner Doc Antle to just over a year in prison after he pled guilty to money laundering.

57-year-old William Dallis will spend a year and one day in federal prison, to be followed by a three-year term of court-ordered supervision.

Dallis, a contractor, admitted to helping wash over half a million dollars in cash Antle earned from bringing undocumented immigrants across the border between June 2021 and April 2022.

'Doc' Antle.

Dallis concealed the origin of the money by depositing the cash into a bank account he controlled and then writing a check to the person who gave him the cash minus a percentage for his fees.

As part of his plea agreement with the government, he forfeited approximately $75,000.

The FBI Columbia field office investigated this case.

Meanwhile, Antle pleaded guilty to money laundering in 2023.

He has not been sentenced yet.
