Canada Event

Join this unforgettable Christian cruise to Canada & New England with Alistair Begg

A note from alistair begg.

Dear Friends,

If you have yet to plan your 2024 vacation, I hope you’ll join me on a scenic tour along the colorful New England and eastern Canadian coastlines from September 21 – 28, 2024.

We’ll study our sermon topic, Aliens and Strangers: Studies in 1 Peter , aboard the Zuiderdam while enjoying the beautiful fall foliage. On our seven-day voyage departing out of Boston, you can visit a historic lighthouse in Halifax, Nova Scotia, take in the spectacular ocean views from Rockland, Maine and dine on fresh seafood on Prince Edward Island.

This trip promises to be a terrific time of worship and fellowship as we immerse ourselves in God’s remarkable creation. Our route through the rich blue waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence will take us through one of the deepest estuaries in the world and home to a variety of sea life.

Onboard, we’ll benefit from the hospitality of our friendly Holland America crew and enjoy the ship's comforts. Most memorable, however, will be our time making new friends, enjoying Christian fellowship and growing in our relationship with the Lord Jesus.

I hope you’ll come along!

Brenton Brown

Alistair Begg, with pastoral roots since 1975, graduated from The London School of Theology. He served in Scotland before becoming the senior pastor at Parkside Church, Ohio, in 1983. Beyond pastoral duties, he's an author and the voice behind Truth For Life radio program, which emanates from his weekly teachings at Parkside. His teachings, deeply rooted in Scripture, let the Spirit of God work through the Word. Married to Susan since 1975, they have three children. Alistair's unwavering faith and teachings resonate globally.

Brenton Brown has written for some of CCM and Gospel’s most well-known artists, such as Third Day, Big Daddy Weave, Amy Grant, and many others. Raised in South Africa, Brown received a scholarship to study politics and philosophy at Oxford University. After completing his degree, Brenton stayed to lead worship at his local church, where he helped produce worship records for the Vineyard Movement. Despite dealing with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and the loss of their family home to a wildfire, the Lord has encouraged Brenton to keep touring and writing songs. His most recent work has taken him back to South Africa, where he writes worship songs in all 11 official languages of his home nation.

Autumn in Canada and New England is beautiful. Temperatures are in the mid-to-upper 60s, and lows are often in the 40s. Pack a light rain jacket to stay comfortable and be prepared for weather changes.

Below is a checklist to help you pack for your exceptional travel experience. Remember that your luggage will be delivered to your cabin at an unspecified time on the day of departure. We suggest packing a change of clothes, toiletries and any medications you need in your carry-on bag.

Packing Checklist

  • Casual clothes including pants, jeans, shorts, T-shirts, collared shirts or blouses
  • Lightweight sweater or jacket and a heavier sweater or jacket
  • Semiformal clothes or dress clothes for one to two evenings, depending on the length of your cruise
  • Bathing suit and a cover-up or wrap
  • Raincoat or compact umbrella
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals with rubber soles
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Toiletries in a sealed, clear bag inside your luggage
  • Minor first-aid care items such as Band-Aids, aspirin, hand sanitizer, etc.
  • Medications in their original containers
  • Hair care appliances (see information in the next FAQ section)
  • Small bag or backpack for port days that is large enough to carry your camera and other personal items
  • Passport with separate photocopy (see below for more information)

Dining Dress Code

On a typical seven-day cruise, you’ll have two nights of dressing up for dinner or other special events. We suggest a semiformal skirt and blouse or dress for women and a suit for men. The remaining dinners on the cruise are informal—blouse and pants for women and collared shirts and trousers for men. Remember that T-shirts, shorts and tank tops are prohibited in the dining room.

Packing Tips

Make certain your suitcase closes and fastens securely. Mark your luggage and carry-on bag with your name and address so you can distinguish them easily. We also recommend you put identification information—name, address and phone number—INSIDE your luggage in case the luggage tags are lost in transit.

Do not pack your passport or travel documents in your luggage. In case your passport is lost, we suggest keeping a color copy of the information page inside your luggage.

For more information, please call one of the Reservation Coordinators at 800 247 1899 , Monday through Friday between 8:30 A.M. – 5:00 P.M., Pacific Time.

We know how nice it is to have the convenience of home when traveling on a cruise. Bringing your electronics and hair appliances can enhance your overall travel experience. Every cruise ship has plugs that accept U.S. and continental European devices, so you do not need to bring plug adaptors. Here are some things to know about your electronics before you pack them.

Phones, Laptops, Cameras & Video Cameras

Most small digital devices have chargers that will fit in the plugs on a cruise ship. Because there are limited plugs in each cabin, you may want to bring a multiplug extension cord.

Blow-Dryers, Curling Irons & Straighteners

Each stateroom has a hair dryer for your personal convenience. If you prefer your own hair appliances, you may want to consider purchasing or borrowing compact and travel-friendly appliances.

For more information, please call one of our Reservation Coordinators at 800 247 1899 , Monday through Friday between 8:30am – 5:00pm, Pacific Time.

Today’s technology allows you to stay connected while traveling—ensuring you get that memorable photo or message from your loved ones. On most ships, you should be able to use your cell phone or smartphone to do everything you’re used to doing at home. In addition, mobile phones provide convenient access for emergencies and confirming travel plans. Some basic guidelines and tips will help you save money, keep your phone working effectively and stay in touch.

Before You Leave

Contacting your cell phone carrier before your trip will help ensure you can call friends and family back home and eliminate any surprises on your phone bill when you return. Let your phone carrier know your travel plans, including how you plan to use your phone on your cruise. You’ll want to make sure you understand all the potential charges. Contact your carrier for specific information.

Check with Your Carrier for International Dialing Access

You will want to ensure international and cruise package dialing is active on your mobile phone plan so you can use it in Canadian ports. Remember that international and maritime roaming rates will apply to calls placed on the ship and charges will appear on your phone bill. Because roaming rates can be high on cruises, checking with your carrier for specific cost details before you leave is a good idea.

Aboard Your Flight and Cruise

Your cell phone’s battery life is the key to keeping you connected. Below are some tips for staying powered up on your trip:

  • Remember to set your phone to airplane mode when you board your flight. You can also do this aboard the cruise when sailing to avoid roaming charges unless you have purchased the cruise ship package with your carrier. This suspends all calling and texting functions but allows you to play games, use your camera, listen to music, etc.
  • On the cruise, you’ll want to charge your phone every night to ensure enough battery life for the next day.
  • Try to turn off your phone when you’re not using it. Leaving your phone on all day drains the battery, so it’s a good idea to turn it off while you’re attending a shore excursion, dining or reading.

To ensure your phone clock is always set at the correct time, set your time and date settings to manual and choose the departure port city. You will want to do this before setting sail. The cruise director will let all passengers know when the time changes during the cruise; at that point, you will need to select the next port city to change the time. If you leave the time and date on the automatic setting, you will notice the time will change randomly, which might not align with the time aboard your ship.

Smartphone Tips

As one of the most popular communication devices today, smartphones have revolutionized how we connect with the world. We know leaving your smartphone behind for an hour, much less multiple days, is difficult. The following tips will help you save your phone’s battery life and get the most out of your smartphone while on the cruise:

  • Before your cruise, disable any applications that give you regular updates, such as sports reports and weather updates.
  • Disable the Data Enabled or Data Roaming option on your phone and keep it off until you reach your destination.
  • Turn off the function for automatic email checking and change the email settings to manual to reduce data roaming charges. During your trip, you can check for email messages when connected to a free, wireless internet connection, such as in a hotel lobby or internet cafe while in port.

In-Room Phones and Phone Cards

If you choose not to bring your mobile phone, you can stay in touch with others using your hotel’s in-room phone. Be sure to understand all the associated charges before you place a call, as the rates can be expensive.

You may also wish to purchase a phone card or download a free messaging app, such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, to stay in touch with friends and family. When purchasing a phone card, make sure the card specifically indicates that calls can be made from an international location. If unspecified, international phone cards only enable you to call international locations from your home country.

Because shore excursions have limited capacity and fill up quickly, we recommend booking early for the best selection on your cruise. Once you’ve booked your Inspiration cruise, check out the customized cruise line excursion list based on your itinerary. Using your cruise booking number on your invoice under passenger details, you can easily book shore excursions online as early as six months before your trip and up to three days before departure, depending on the cruise line.

Visit the cruise line’s website to find information on specific excursions:

  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Holland America Line
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Royal Caribbean International

You may also register for your shore excursions once onboard the ship. All shore excursion requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Waitlisted requests for sold-out shore excursions will be processed before requests are made onboard.

For more information please call one of our Reservation Coordinators at 800 247 1899 , Monday through Friday between 8:30am – 5:00pm, Pacific Time.

We want to help make your trip as smooth and enjoyable as possible. We can book motorcoach transfers from the airport to your cruise departure port and on your return trip.

Hotel Stays

Remember that you always have the option of arriving earlier or staying later. Hotel reservations may be available if you want to arrive a few days early before boarding your cruise or stay a few days after the cruise returns.

As you plan for your upcoming Christian cruise with Inspiration, you may wonder about using money and credit cards during your travels. We’ve made the following recommendations to help you save money and avoid unnecessary fees so you can focus on an exceptional travel experience.

  • Consider leaving all unnecessary credit cards at home.
  • Once you determine which cards you’ll bring, remember to notify each credit card company of your intended travel dates and locations to ensure fraud alerts and holds are not placed on your accounts.
  • For each card, you should store the bank’s contact information in a separate, secure location in the unlikely event your wallet or purse is lost or stolen.

Almost all Canadian destinations accept U.S. credit or debit cards. If you plan to use your credit cards, you’ll want to check with each credit card company to determine the international exchange fee for each card. Because the difference of a few percentage points could cost you more (depending on your purchases), we recommend using cards with lower international exchange fees. Using your credit card for large purchases gives you more protection for the items you buy on your trip, and you can review your credit card statement to verify all your purchases.

When your cruise stops in Canada, the Canadian dollar (C$) is the official currency; however, U.S. dollars are widely accepted. When paying in U.S. dollars, expect to receive change in Canadian currency, so bringing small bills is helpful. While most cruise lines offer money exchange services onboard, please note that NCL does not provide this service. We recommend checking the exchange rate before traveling to a foreign country.

Your cruise vacation allows you to explore multiple locations without the hassle of checking in and out of hotels, packing and unpacking, and spending valuable time trying to find quality restaurants—all with excellent service dedicated to enhancing your exceptional travel experience.

Each cruise line makes rewarding the excellent service you’ll receive onboard easy. A gratuity of $16-$25 per day (depending on the cruise line and cabin category), per guest for dining and stateroom services will be automatically added daily to your shipboard account. In addition, the cruise line will automatically add an 18%-20% service charge for beverages and spa and salon services purchased through your onboard account. Before the end of the cruise, the cruise director will address more specific questions regarding tipping procedures.

If you take a taxi to the pier, it’s common to round up to the next dollar when paying your tab. The cab drivers appreciate this, as it is considered part of their income.

When you arrive at the ship on embarkation day, we suggest tipping the porters at the pier $1.25 per bag when they take your luggage to place it on the ship.

When visiting restaurants off the ship and during shore excursions, a 20% tip for restaurant service workers is appreciated.

From the stunning fall landscapes and quaint towns of Maine to the lighthouses and scenery of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, the laid-back charm of this region has enchanted travelers for centuries. True Faith by New Order

Songfacts®:

  • Many heroin users describe a glorious detachment that comes from the drug's high, and that feeling seems to be described in this song. When we asked New Order bass player Peter Hook about the meaning, however, he denied the drug connection. Said Hook: "'True Faith' features some of the best New Order lyrics in my opinion, but no, it is not about heroin, that is not something that any of our lyrics ever touched on. I think it's clear to see though that the lyrics do reflect being under some sort of influence." His bandmate Bernard Sumner has stated otherwise, however, telling Q magazine in 1999 that the song is about drug dependency, and that while he didn't do heroin, he wrote it from the perspective of a user. This is far from the first time Sumner and Hook haven't seen eye-to-eye - their relationship soured when Hook left the band in 2007 and Sumner decided to continue on without him in 2011.
  • The video, which is still frequently shown in the UK today, depicts a "good vs. evil" type fight in a surreal manner, starting with two costumed people smacking each others' faces in time with the drum beat. The clip was directed by Philippe Decouflé, a French dancer/choreographer (he also worked as a mime), who would later direct the Fine Young Cannibals video for " She Drives Me Crazy ." The band was busy on tour, so their scenes were shot at a stop in Glastonbury while the rest of the footage was filmed in Paris.
  • New Order took on a grueling tour schedule at the end of 1986 that lasted about a year. During this time, they did very little recording, but they did make time to write and record "True Faith," which was released as a single in 1987 and featured as the only new song on their compilation album Substance
  • The band wrote this song with their producer, Steven Hague. It was the first time they collaborated with Hague, who joined them again to produce New Order's 1993 album Republic . Bernard Sumner recalled to Uncut : " It was a time when I set out to write a hit single. I think we got a rather large tax bill, and we sat down with Stephen Hague to write a Top 40 hit." "I had an idea for the bassline, Gillian (Gilbert, keyboards) had some string ideas, Stephen got some drums down. When we got the track going, I was sent off to the flat we had in London with a bottle of Pernod and told not to show my face again until I'd written the lyrics."
  • According to Bernard Sumner, the lyrics were changed at the last minute to sanitize the lines "When I was a very small boy, very small boys talked to me, now that we've grown up together, they're all taking drugs with me" to "they're afraid of what they see," at the suggestion of producer Steven Hague, who felt the song had more hit potential without the drug reference. Sumner would sometimes sing this original lyric during live performances.
  • The song returned to the UK singles chart in 2011 in the form of a cover by George Michael that was recorded for the Comic Relief charity. His version peaked at #27 - not as successful as Michael's solo single " Faith ," which peaked at #2 (and topped the US chart) in 1987.
  • This song is playing in the club where Patrick Bateman, the main character of the 2000 movie American Psycho , played by Christian Bale, is partying with his friends at the beginning of the movie. >> Suggestion credit : Rose Marie - Valencia, Spain

  • Frankfrankultimate from America I agree with Pumpkintrash
  • Pj Dublin from Ireland I often wondered this before, and after reading the comments, Alex I think your spot on regarding mourning. The Ian Curtis comparison to sid in the way both bands cope after they passed and maybe still feel under their shadow which "they should'nt", fair play to you for reading in between the lines. I never would have seen it.
  • Alex from Usa Songs can have a lot of layers. I took this one to be like the many songs of Pink Floyd mourning Syd Barrett. I took "I used to think that the day would never come / I'd see the light in the shade of the morning sun" to mean "I thought I'd never recover from the death of Ian Curtis, that my whole life would be defined by my early exposure to that genius". But no one else seems to see it that way so maybe I'm just overreading.
  • Ignatius T Foobar from Usa This is my jam. Decades of listening have not diminished how much I love it, even though I've never been a heroin user.
  • Jav from Cdmx I always thought this song was about coming out as gay and that that fear was actually the fear of coming out and then in the future his friends are afraid of what they see.
  • Pumpkintrash from Philippines i found this song when i watched the 1 lunatic 1 ice pick where the guy killed his bf using ice pick, and i was like “oh the song was so catchy” and this is my fav 80's song now
  • Ori from Texas I've always had this song attributed with my life, as from Kindergarten, I've been hated in school and I even had clinical depression at AGE 8, but I always found the happiness in a new day, thinking something had changed. I'd always been optimistic in that sense, no matter how hard life got. No matter how abusive my parents were (are), I found the light of a new day and fell in love with the sunrise and stars of the night in time. "When I was a very small boy, a very small boy was tough to me" fit me in two ways as not only did I have a childhood bully, but just being a small boy was 'tough' to me. and after all this time I learn the song is about heroin, feels great lol
  • Maewkaew from Chicago Il I think it’s pretty clear it’s about drugs, and Bernard has said it was, but It’s not necessarily heroin addiction. Bernard would more likely be writing about cocaine or ecstasy since those are drugs he was into, not heroin. So I don’t think there’s really a contradiction in the quotes of him and Hooky. Yes It was about drugs but No not specifically heroin. I think it can apply to a lot of types of addiction though.
  • Jim from Uk The speculation in the comments from coming out to ecstasy is amusing. Sumner wrote almost all the lyrics and said it’s about heroin so it’s about heroin. He says he didn’t use it but those lyrics are a bit too familiar for me to think that might not be 100% true.
  • Chris from Germany One of the best songs of all time I saw the video for the first time ,,as a small boy’’ (hehe lyrics) on MTV in the early 90s. the video was influenced by the Weimarer Republik and especially by DAS TRIADISCHES BALLETT by Oskar Schlemmer. The producer Stephen Hague Made a great song
  • Colton from Concord, Ca Of course this songs about heroin addiction! "again and again I've taken too much of the things that cost u too much" is about constantly trying to just take a little bit after getting clean but again and again taking too much and ending up addicted again and broke. "I used to think that the day would never come" is talking about the day that he's finally totally clean and doesn't crave heroin soo much he needs it to feel normal. It truely feels that way when heroin has controlled your life since adolescence "a childhood I lost replaced by fear". You forget what life without heroin feels like and how to live it, yet u desperately want to go back. U end up feeling like its just been too long and u never will"the chances are we've gone too far, u took my time and u took my money. Now i feel you've left me standing in a world that's so demanding". The point though is that he "used" to feel that the day would never come because if u do keep trying and u keep fighting it u will win and finally be free of the hold it had on your life. Its impossible to truely understand unless you've been addicted to heroin and other hard opioids before. People always paint heroin as this big scary super evil worst drug out there when it's just the same as almost any other opioid people certainly dont do it because it the closest u can feel to death, usually people do it because of the intense rush and zero comedown kind of side effects unlike coke and also usually because it helps u with anxiety issues and anti depresses u. The problem is u can never know how powerful the addiction and withdrawals are until it's too late. This song really speaks to me
  • Rick from Mason City, Ia One of the best dance tracks by NO!!! Just a Classic!!!!
  • Michael Martarano from New Haven, Ct I wouldn't speculate too much on New Order's lyrics. But I'll offer up a fact about the video. It was directed and choreographed by the French Performance Artist, Philippe Decoufle' who also choreographed The Fine Young Cannibals video 'She Drives Me Crazy'.
  • Jessica from Tulsa, Ok @ scott from Baton Rouge: VERY true! lol.
  • Amy from Melbourne, Australia I'm part of todays generation, i listen to real music, new order is one of my favorite bands. we don't all listen to mainstream crap on the radio!
  • Scott from Baton Rouge, La Another great New Order song. To today's generation: This is what is called "music" kids, lol.
  • Daniel from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Obviously 'morning sun' has to do with coming out from a (drug fueled) rave party at morning
  • Joe from Harrisonburg, Va I actually thought this song was about a gay person coming out of the closet when I first heard it..........and I still think that by the way. It's more original then the whole drug cliche and makes a more daring statement.
  • Chris from Milwaukee, Wi I always thought this song was about using Ecstasy. The band has referenced this song being a "drug song" in the past. The line about being near to the childhood I lost replaced by fear always seemed to be about using drugs to escape - to get back to our lost childhood and away from the scary adult world. The lyrics themselves seem to describe Ecstasy use... the sense of well being... loss of defensiveness. I don't see how this song can be about anything else.
  • Bloodaxe from Lincoln, Ne This song is about being afraid of sleeping at night, and that the morning sun is his "drug"... its about being sexually abused. For all the people who spend their lives up at night while others are asleep because they've never recovered from the fear of the darkness and what their dreams and fears bring them. It has nothing to do with heroin, it specifically mentions the "morning sun" as being the drug". He feels "extraordinary" and feels "liberty" when he reaches the morning sun. He "lost" his childhood, and it was "replaced by fear". If its about drugs, the drugs mask the true pain he's fighting... abuse. Most drug abusers were abused in some way, verbally, physically, sexually. It's called "self medication". This song sings about his secret pain and the method in which he tries to find redemption.
  • Melly from Houston, Tx Steve, the band said it was a song about drugs in an interview at one point. If you follow the band's history at all, you'd completely get WHY it is a song about addiction. Pretty funny how it has become synonmous with summer and good times here in the States, though.
  • Steve from Inane-isville, Pa besides heroin doesnt make you feel more alive, the reason lyricists use it at all is because its the closest one can get to DEATH.
  • Steve from Inane-isville, Pa yeah i sincerely hope everyone disregards that first song"Fact". not all songs are about drugs. seriously Curtis you sound like you know this page is full of crap. think "The Den" from socrates
  • Curtis from Cornwall On Hudson , Ny -:(Why are all the songs I think relate to my life drug songs? I've never done drugs...maybe I should...
  • Dee from Indianapolis, In NEW ORDER just rules when it comes to electronic style music. They created it with Joy Division & perfected it with New Order. "Substance" is a must have for anyone who knows anything about good music.
  • Rock from Mke, Wi This song is also the main track behind the nightclub scene in "Bright lights, big city" featuring Michael J. Fox (one of his few serious films). A great Prince track, "Goodlove," is in there, as well.

The True Faith Shares “Feet Held To The Fire,” From Forthcoming Go To Ground LP

true faith tour

Boston’s The True Faith have released the second single from their forthcoming LP,  Go To Ground , which sees release via à La Carte Records (Lesser Care, Don’t Get Lemon) on January 10, 2023. Listen  here .

“’Feet Held To The Fire’ was the first song that was written for the new album,” Benson says. “We had just wrapped up the recording of  They Can Always Hurt You More  when we started working on this track. The song is ultimately about accountability – holding ourselves accountable and being accountable to others. This entire album came at a major transitional point for us – not only as a band but in our own individual lives – and each song really highlights an experience felt at the time.”

The True Faith consists of core members Travis Benson (vocals/guitar), Quentin Moyer (guitar) and Dylan Kotliar (bass). The band started as a solo project by Travis when he released the self-titled demo cassette, which was a darker minimal synth/industrial type sound. The demo caught the attention of à La Carte Records who approached them to release an album on the new label. Benson recruited friend Quentin Moyer to play guitar on their debut EP,  As Much Nothing As Possible , shifting towards more of a classic synth-pop sound. After the release of the EP, they began working on their first full-length album,  They Can Always Hurt You More.  The True Faith added Dylan Kotliar on bass during this time and had Tom Weir (from Old Moon) play drums. During the writing sessions for the album, they released two of the tracks originally intended for the LP as a 7″ (Leucovorin Rescue b/w What is Owed 7″ on à La Carte Records) and an additional song, “Giving Up,” was released as an exclusive track on a compilation for music outlet  Destroy//Exist . The True Faith released  They Can Always Hurt You More  through à La Carte Records and went on an east coast tour with Doused. Currently, the band also includes Nauman Javed on drums and Francisco Ilabaca on synth. Instagram | Bandcamp

True Faith: The Story Behind New Order’s Career-Changing Song

True Faith: The Story Behind New Order’s Career-Changing Song

Recording under pressure with an unfamiliar producer, New Order took some risks with True Faith, but they yielded substantial rewards.

After parting ways with producer Martin Hannett following the release of their debut album, Movement , New Order largely oversaw the production of their own records during the 80s. Yet, while some of the best New Order albums , including landmark titles such as Power, Corruption & Lies and Low-Life were self-produced by the band, with help from engineer Michael Johnson, New Order weren’t averse to collaborative projects. Their sixth single, Confusion , came from a link-up with New York City-based producer Arthur Baker, while fellow New Yorker John Robie radically remixed Shellshock for 1986’s Pretty In Pink film soundtrack. However, it was New Order’s third tie-in with an influential US-based producer which resulted in one of their most iconic songs, True Faith.

Listen to the best of New Order here .

The backstory: “everyone seemed to like what stephen had done with pet shop boys”.

The man in question, Stephen Hague, was a native of Maine, on the US East Coast, but he’d initially made his name as a Los Angeles-based session musician, appearing on recordings by artists as disparate as Suicide, The Cars’ Ric Ocasek and country legend Dolly Parton. However, Hague really made his name for his production work with OMD, Malcolm McLaren and on Pet Shop Boys’ debut album, Please , during the mid-80s. He was first linked with New Order when the band’s US label, Warner Music, were keen to add a couple of new tracks to the upcoming singles and remixes collection, Substance 1987 , early in 1987.

“Tom [Atencio, New Order’s US manager] had been talking with Malcolm about his next project and the name of fellow American Stephen Hague came up,” New Order’s drummer, Stephen Morris, recalled in his book, Fast Forward: Confessions Of A Post-Punk Percussionist: Volume II . “He had produced and co-written [McLaren’s] Madam Butterfly and was McLaren’s recommendation for a prospective producer. Everyone seemed to like what Stephen had done with this modern take on Puccini and the Pet Shop Boys , and despite the ‘Do we really need a producer?’ misgivings, he got the job.”

However, while both parties readily accepted the challenge of working together at London’s Advision Studios, they only had ten days to complete two brand new songs. Not only were band and producer meeting each other for the first time, but the songs they would record – True Faith and 1963 – had only been roughly sketched out before they entered the studio. To realise both tracks’ full potential, New Order had to adapt to a radically different method of working.

The recording: “We had ten days. It was like pulling off a bank job”

“Stephen’s plan was that we would work out a rough arrangement of the two ideas,” Morris explained. “Add some rough chords and then instead of Bernard [Sumner, frontman] adding more musical parts and overdubs, he would do his vocal parts, and then we would add any extra bits that worked around the words, build the track that way. Not the way we usually did things but there was some sense in it, particularly after the Brotherhood overdubbing. Together with Stephen, Bernard worked out the guide parts on the computer, which then got recorded on to a Sony 3324 digital multitrack machine.”

As Morris’ anecdote suggests, the Advision sessions required New Order to accept further integration of technology into their overall sound. Both True Faith and 1963 were written using cutting-edge electronic gear including Akai and Emulator sampling keyboards. Morris, too, largely put his drum kit aside, though his live hi-hat and cymbals were incorporated into both songs’ electronic rhythm tracks.

Working with this new MO, instead of jamming organically on new ideas as they’d done previously, caused some friction in the ranks (“Hooky [ Peter Hook wondered if maybe we were missing something by not letting the band rip. It crossed my mind, too,” Hague later admitted). For the most part, though, New Order and their new producer were happy bouncing ideas off each other to see where it took them.

“We didn’t know which one would end up sounding better,” the producer told Sound On Sound in 2005. “But there was a strange kind of confidence settling over the sessions. We never seemed to consider that we might fail. We had exactly ten days to write, record and mix two tracks, the reason being their release schedule. Co-ordinating the European release dates, which at that time were scattered between various companies and various regions, was a bit like pulling off a bank job.”

The lyrics: “He found himself prisoner in the top-floor flat”

Despite the pressure, both songs’ musical backdrops soon coalesced. However, while New Order had decided on a title for the more promising of the two (True Faith, copped from James A Michener’s novel Texas , which Peter Hook was then reading), they still had no lyrics. In the end, Sumner produced the goods after literally getting locked into the band’s flat until the job was done.

As a frontman, Sumner “was inclined to leave the singing and lyrics until the last possible moment”, Stephen Morris wrote in Fast Forward . “This time, as soon as he’d come up with a vocal melody, he found himself prisoner in the top-floor flat we’d rented near Paddington, forced to write words. We only had one key and didn’t trust him with it…

“Saying ‘Write or die!’ is not generally conducive to creativity, [but] it can sometimes work,” the drummer furthered. Returning to find the flat empty of food and drink, and their singer still struggling to finish the task, Morris, Hook, keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and manager Rob Gretton stayed up until dawn with Sumner, helping him to complete the lyrics.

From then on, the lush, cinematic True Faith really fell into place. Sumner briskly recorded his vocals in the control room at Advision, while Stephen Hague has freely admitted his admiration for both Peter Hook’s skills as a bassist and Gillian Gilbert’s synth work.

“Hooky would try a lot of ideas, really fearless, and often it was just me and him in the studio,” the producer told Sound On Sound. “The first time, it was a bit scary because I didn’t know what to expect, but he always delivered, and he’d often send the track into areas I never would have thought of.

“Gillian didn’t run ideas by me as we went along,” Hague added. “When it was finally her turn, she had all these fully formed ideas for both tracks. We just got sounds and she recorded them, all hand-played. It was so painless… She’s a real joy to work with.”

The release: “True Faith ended up being a big song for us, no doubt about it”

By the time True Faith was released as a single, on 20 July 1987, New Order had already debuted it at that year’s Glastonbury Festival , and they knew it was something special. Its release was accompanied by a striking video, directed and choreographed by Philippe Decouflé and produced by long-term Factory Records ’ alumnus Michael Shamberg, which helped bring the song to a wider audience.

“Michael made another absolutely fantastic video for True Faith,” Stephen Morris later enthused. “Featuring bouncing elves, a choreographed punch-up and a turtle lady doing sign language, the visuals really stood out at the time. It was totally surreal and completely unlike anything else I’d seen. In fact it was so good, it won a BRIT Award!”

Indeed, as one of the best New Order songs , True Faith took things to a whole new level for the group. Melodic and accessible, the song peaked at No.4 in the UK – the band’s highest chart placing to date – and it went gold, in addition to cracking the Top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100.

The equally fine 1963 initially ended up as True Faith’s B-side, though it later had its chance to shine, when an Arthur Baker remix entered the UK Top 30 as a standalone hit from the 1994 compilation The Best Of New Order . With hindsight, you could argue that choosing to work with Stephen Hague was one of the best decisions New Order ever made.

“I didn’t think True Faith was that much better than anything we’d done in the past,” Peter Hook reflected in his book Substance: Inside New Order . “But it certainly eclipsed our previous work in terms of sales and international exposure on Substance. True Faith ended up being a big song for us, no doubt about it.”

“There was no hand-wringing at all,” Stephen Hague said in 2005. “We all left the studio really happy. It was just mission accomplished.”
