How do I get Java for my Mac? You can download Java from java.com .

What are the system requirements for Java on my Mac? Please refer to Java SE 8 certified systems configurations page.

How do I install Java for my Mac? See Mac Java installation instructions .

How do I update Java on my Mac? See How to update Java on Mac .

How do I enable Java on my Mac? When you install Oracle Java on your Mac (Lion and above), Java will be enabled by default. If you are running a Java application in the browser, you will need to also check that Java is enabled in your browser . For earlier versions of Java, check Apple support site .

How do I uninstall Java from my Mac? See Mac Java uninstall instructions .

How do I find out what version of Java I have on my Mac? Mac OS X 10.7.3 and above: Under System Preferences click on the Java icon to access the Java Control Panel which will list your Java version. If you do not see a Java icon under System Preferences , Java 8 or later versions is not installed.

How do I clear the Java cache on my Mac? See How to clear the Java cache on Mac .

Can I use Chrome with Oracle Java on my Mac? Starting with Chrome version 42 (released April 2015), Chrome has disabled the standard way in which browsers support plugins. More info

Why is Oracle Java available only for Mac OS X 10.7.3 and above? The Java Runtime depends on the availability of an Application Programming Interface (API). Some of the APIs were added in Mac OS X 10.7.3. Apple has no plans to make those APIs available on older versions of the Mac OS.

Can I install Java on Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite)? Yes. See Mac OS X 10.10 FAQ .

Is it safe to install previous or older versions of Java? Oracle highly discourages users from using older versions of Java. Installing old and unsupported versions of Java on your system presents a serious security risk. Upgrading to the latest version of Java ensures that Java applications will run with the most up-to-date security and performance improvements on your system. If installing an older version of Java is absolutely required, you must first uninstall the current version. See the instructions at Mac uninstall Java FAQ .

Why will applets not run after getting Java through Apple Software Update? Apple disables Java plug-in and Web Start applications when the Java update is done using Software Update. Also, if the Java plug-in detects that no applets have been run for an extended period of time it will again disable the Java plug-in.

The installation hangs during an auto-update, what can I do to get the latest Java? During an auto-update, users might see the installation stall. Download latest Java 8 from java.com .

When I try to use java from the command line, why doesn't it work? I have Oracle's version of the JRE installed. Installing JRE from Oracle does not update java -version symlinks or add java to your path. For this functionality, you must install the full JDK. See Mac command line info .

After I updated to macOS Sierra 10.12, El Capitan (OS X 10.11), or Yosemite (OS X 10.10), why am I told to install Java after I already installed the latest Java? See information about Apple Java messages .

How do I report issues related to Java? Provide us details at Feedback form for reporting issues related to Java.

Cannot enable Java in Safari (or any other browser) in OS X

I have the following running on my Mac:

  • OSX Yosemite (10.10.2)
  • Java version 8 update 31
  • Safari 8.0.4

I am unable to run any Java applet on Safari. I have added multiple sites to the exception lists (in System Preferences -> Java Control Panel -> Security), but it has not changed anything.

I also don't see anything related to Java in Safari preferences:

enter image description here

When I try to run a Java applet, it says, Error. Click for details. , and when I do, this is what I get:

enter image description here

I've tried Chrome and Firefox as well, and this is the common error they give me:

enter image description here

Whatever I do, I cannot allow for Java applets to be run on any browser.

  • Did you try adding 140.113.239.214 to the exception list under System Preferences -> Java -> Security ? –  Erikster Commented Mar 18, 2015 at 23:12
  • Didn't work. It asked me permission to run it, I said ok, and then it didn't load again. It says Error, click for details again. But this time, the error is NullPointerException : There was an error while executing the application. Click "Details" for more information. –  sodiumnitrate Commented Mar 18, 2015 at 23:42
  • 1 Huh. NullPointerException sounds like an issue with the actual Java program you're trying to run. Do you have an IT group you can contact? –  Erikster Commented Mar 18, 2015 at 23:44
  • Ok, tried it with another java applet from another site. It worked, but safari keeps on crashing. Works perfectly well with chrome, though. –  sodiumnitrate Commented Mar 19, 2015 at 0:05
  • To Safari, Java counts as a plug-in. So you may need to click the "Website Settings…" button for plug-ins, find Java in the list of plug-ins, and add websites to the whitelist. –  Spiff Commented Mar 19, 2015 at 0:48

Last Updated: March 29, 2024

This wikiHow teaches you how to enable JavaScript in Safari, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox when you're using a Mac. JavaScript is enabled by default in most modern web browsers or is prompted whenever an application needs to use it, so you shouldn't have to enable it unless you've turned it off.

JavaScript for Mac: Enabling in Your Browser

  • JavaScript is enabled in most Mac web browsers by default, so you shouldn't have to enable it unless you've turned it off.
  • To enable JavaScript in Safari, click the Safari menu, select Preferences or Settings , click Security , and check the box next to "Enable JavaScript."
  • To enable JavaScript in Chrome, click the menu, go to Settings > Advanced > Site Settings > JavaScript , and toggle on the "Allowed" switch.

Things You Should Know

  • Navigate to the "Security" tab of your Safari Preferences to ensure the box next to "Enable JavaScript" is checked.
  • Find "Site Settings" under the "Privacy and Security" tab of your Chrome Settings to enable JavaScript.
  • Firefox enables JavaScript by default. If it is disabled, you may have an extension that is blocking it.

Step 1 Open Safari on your Mac.

  • If you're using a browser plugin that blocks JavaScript from running on one or more websites, you'll usually need to disable it. You can do so on the Preferences panel by clicking Websites and de-selecting the plugin name. [2] X Research source

Step 1 Open Chrome on your Mac.

  • JavaScript is allowed by default in Chrome. You shouldn't have to manually enable it unless you've turned it off.

Step 2 Click the ⁝ menu.

  • If you see the word "Allowed" right below "JavaScript," JavaScript is already enabled.
  • If JavaScript isn't working despite being enabled, it's likely due to a security extension you've installed on Chrome. Click the ⁝ menu, click More Tools , and then Extensions . Toggle off any extensions you don't want to use.

Step 7 Slide the

  • Chrome lets you manually disable JavaScript by website. If you manually disabled JavaScript on a certain site and want to re-enable it, you can do so under the "Blocked" header. Click the ⁝ menu next to the site's name and click Remove .

Step 1 Open Firefox on your Mac.

  • JavaScript is enabled by default in Firefox. There's no way to disable it in your general Firefox options, so it's unlikely that you'll need to turn it on unless you've manually edited the about:config page.
  • If you've installed a privacy extension like Ghostery or NoScript that disables JavaScript, you may need to disable it to use JavaScript. Click the ≡ menu, click Add-ons , and then click Disable next to the extension. [3] X Research source

Step 2 Type about:config into the address bar and press ⏎ Return.

  • The results appear in three columns: Preference Name , Status , Type , and Value .

Step 5 Find the value of the

  • If the Value is set to True : JavaScript is already enabled and there's no need to make any changes. Do not continue with this method.
  • If the Value is set to False : Continue with this method.

Step 6 Right-click the False value.

Enabling Java to interact with the filesystem in Safari running on MacOS

Question & answer.

How can I enable Java in Safari to load the IBM Daeja ViewONE Applet, and also to permit saving of files to the MacOS filesystem?

Java security restrictions, unless changed, prevent applets from loading, and also from having write access to the OSX filesystem

Safari's configuration must be changed to permit websites to run Java applets, and secondly to allow Java to interact with the file system (eg, to save a redacted document). To enable Java on Safari on OSX: Safari • Click on Safari and select Preferences • Choose the Security option • Select Allow Plug-ins, then click on Manage Website Settings • Click on the Java item, select an option (Ask, Allow or Allow Always) from the pulldown list When visiting other websites • Click Done, then close the Safari Preferences window When attempting to save a file to the OSX filesystem if the appropriate changes have not been made you receive an error message reading “Operation not permitted”.  To avoid this message, the website that is running the applet must be trusted. To trust an applet on a website, follow the steps below: • Go to Safari > Preferences. • Click the “Security” tab, then click the “Manage Website Settings…” button. • You will see the list of websites you have visited that use the Java web plug-in. • Select the website you would like to trust. • In the drop down next to the website, choose the option “Run in Unsafe Mode“. This allows the Internet plug-in to load and display its content completely without malware safety checks. Choosing Run in Unsafe Mode may present a security risk, so only select this option on websites you trust. • A dialog will be displayed to ask you to confirm that you would like to trust the website. Choose “Confirm”.

All current web browsers , including Safari , Firefox , and Chrome, support Java.

Safari Website settings, can you disable javaScript on a per website basis, as there's many a badly written site that breaks iPadOS Safari

Is there a way to disable JavaScript on a per Website basis (can't see anything in Website Settings "Aa"), as an increasing number of sites are including 2nd / 3rd party libraries, mainly to stream ads, that slow browsing to a crawl, pull many MB of media per page, if not trigger Safari into an automatic page reload, or crash, on a page that notionally presents a few KB of static text content?

Disabling JS would stop many an errant second / third party code library ruining my browsing experience, my mobile data allowance, if not many a crash report appearing in the inbox of an Apple Dev.
