Europe’s green gem
Ireland bike tours.
From its legendary hospitality to its breathtaking green vistas, from its charming inns and bed and breakfasts to its majestic countryside castles, Ireland is certainly a cyclist’s paradise. Charming pubs, where the Irish spirit remains alive today in this land of friendly people, help round out the experience after a day’s riding.
Meander along quiet back roads through lush landscapes, compelling backdrops for historic villages, sprawling farmland with grazing animals, and ancient and medieval ruins. Pedal at your own pace through endless green hills across the island to dramatic coastal cliffs and rocky shores.
“We rode through a host of different landscapes: eerie bogs, rivers, fjords and the dramatic bens that seem to rise right out of the water. We loved rolling under a green tunnel of trees, then entering a new vista of fields edged in ancient stone walls.”

Cycle Holidays Ireland
Bike tours along the west coast of ireland.
Hello, we are an Irish bike tour owned and operated by locals based here in the west of Ireland. We started this guided bike tour 24 years ago.
Over time we have developed the safest and most scenic possible bike route due to the constant adjustment and tweaking of the routes, accommodations and restaurants.
Value for money has been a very important element of the tour’s success. A fully guided and supported seven day tour with top class equipment, support vehicles, accommodations and restaurants for a price of €2650. We can offer this value because there are natural advantages to operating in our own area that outside tour operators would not enjoy.
Check out our customer reviews on Trip Advisor and Google to evaluate the quality of what we offer
Looking forward to meeting you and leading your tour next summer.

After lunch and a bike fit, we hit the road for a local’s loop introducing you to this part of Ireland. You will pedal past the conical summit of Croagh Patrick mountain. Cycle through Ballycroy National Park - Ireland's greatest wilderness.
– Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner
The Talbot Hotel
55 miles (89 km)
+2,158 ft / -2,178 ft
Ballycroy is Ireland’s greatest wilderness. It comprises of 11,000 hectares of Atlantic blanket bog and mountainous terrain, covering a vast uninhabited and unspoiled wilderness. This is one of the last intact active blanket bog systems in the world. Today’s route is through the heart of this fascinating eco-system where the challenge is not so much in the terrain but in the ever-changing winds that make biking in this area fun and unpredictable. Staying in the heart of the bustling seaside town of Belmullet, this is a great opportunity to find some real Irish pubs and great traditional music.
Sea-cliffs buffer the green hills of Mayo. Stop for tea and scones at Ireland's most important Neolithic site.
– Breakfast – Lunch
63 miles (101 km)
+2,406 ft / -2,335 ft
Mayo is a myriad of different vistas and landscapes. Today’s loop of the northern part of the county takes in them all; from the windswept coastline of Downpatrick Head where some of Europe’s tallest sea-cliffs make for a dramatic backdrop, to the rolling green hills of the area’s interior. Stop at one of the world’s most fascinating Neolithic sites for tea and scones. On today’s route, you’ll enjoy the short, sharp climbs and exciting descents that characterize riding in these parts. Finishing up at a rural pub, end the day with a great pint of Guinness before a short transfer back to the Talbot. Dinner is on your own tonight.
Ride up through the Ox Mountains and down to Sligo on the coast. Enjoy some traditional Irish music.
The Glasshouse
43 miles (69 km)
+1,761 ft / -1,761 ft
Transfer from Belmullet to another seaside town, Enniscrone, in the morning. Pedal into the Ox mountains, otherwise known as St. Patrick’s Mountains. The landscape and the views get wider and wilder as you climb through open pasturelands. Roll on to Sligo for a two-night stay at the award-winning and modern The Glasshouse right in town. Sligo is one of Ireland’s bastions of traditional music and has some of the country’s liveliest pubs, so you can explore as you like from the hotel. You may also want to pay a visit, or homage, to well-preserved Sligo Abbey dating back to the 13 th century!
Pedal poetic Sligo, William Butler Yeats' "land of heart’s desire," and relax with a seaweed bath.
48 miles (77 km)
+2,627 ft / -2,626 ft
Sligo was immortalized as the “land of heart’s desire” in the poetry of William Butler Yeats. Take in some of his favorite haunts on our ride today, and end with an optional (must pre-book via your guide) relaxing seaweed bath. Begin with a beautiful lakeside ride along the shores of Lough Gill and stop for a brief castle visit before the terrain eventually gives way to gorgeous ocean views. After lunch at a locals’ café, we cycle on to the bohemian seaside town of Strandhill where surfers from the world over gather to take on some of the Atlantic’s mightiest waves in the shadow of the prehistoric hilltop grave of mysterious Queen Maeve. Dinner is on your own tonight. In addition to the music and the pubs, Sligo has a great food scene. Stay another night at The Glasshouse .
Some Yeats’ quotes we’ve “poeticized” for cyclists:
“ Come Fairies, take me out of this dull world, for I would ride (my bicycle) with you upon the wind and dance upon the mountains like a flame! ”
“Think where man’s glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I (rode with) such friends.”
“ There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven’t (cycled with yet).”
Cycle from mysterious, fortress-like Benbulben mountain to stay in a castle in Donegal.
Lough Eske Castle Hotel
58 miles (93 km)
+3,277 ft / -3,109 ft
The skyline in these parts is dominated by the dramatic cliffs of Ben Bulben Mountain. Today’s ride begins in the shadow of this eerie rock. Cycling from our hotel, we stop at a park honoring one of Ireland’s most famous revolutionaries and one of the first women ever elected to political office. Next, a brief visit to Drumcliffe Church and Yeats’ grave site. We then follow a network of valleys and glens, passing by tranquil lakes and waterfalls and through green pasture lands before briefly crossing the border into Northern Ireland and back out again. Hear stories of cross-border smuggling and tales of the region’s dramatic recent history before finally rolling into our castle hotel for the evening for a celebratory final dinner. Stay at Lough Eske Castle Hotel .
Lough Eske and the Bluestack Mountains.
9 miles (14.5 km), or double it
+594 ft / -591 ft; or double it
Some might opt to enjoy a well-earned massage at the castle’s award-winning spa this morning. (You will need to book this with the hotel well in advance if you do.) For those who want to see a little bit more of the local landscape we’ll take a short spin through the granite hills of the Bluestack Mountains around Lough Eske for some rewarding views. If you like the ride going clockwise, we recommend you ride it in the opposite direction as well! After a chance to shower and lunch, we hit the road back to Dublin.

Before and After Your Trip
Dublin, Ireland
While there is an endless amount of things to see in Ireland as a whole, the friendly capital city of Dublin is a destination that can't be missed! Here are but a few suggestions for spending an enjoyable time in this thriving, historical city: spend time listening to live music in the buzzing Temple Bar district; visit Trinity College’s Old Library, which houses the famous Book of Kells; view Ireland’s visual history at the National Photographic Archives; and enjoy distillery tours, such as the Guinness Storehouse and the Old Jameson Distillery. Dublin's dining and entertainment is legendary, from the boozy delights of Temple Bar to more cultured nights at the theater to dining in one of the city's fine eateries including three one-star and three two-star Michelin restaurants, plus a plethora of choices with a Bib-Gourmand designation. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

Key attractions include the Galway City Museum and the National Aquarium, or catch a play at the Town Hall Theatre. Salthill's pristine beaches attract swimmers, while the city's streets are a stage for buskers and street performers. Galway's nightlife buzzes with traditional music pubs, modern clubs, and the infectious energy of its streets. Annascaul and the Dingle Peninsula
Your guides will greet you at your Dublin Hotel for a transfer out west, through the rolling midlands to the wild and mountainous coast. Set off on our opening ride after a safety talk and lunch in a traditional Irish pub, winding our way around the many small roads called boreens that characterize the southern coast of the Dingle peninsula. Pass beautiful coves and castle ruins before rolling into the quintessential Irish village of Dingle. We’ll get right into it with tonight’s private brewery tour!
Meals : Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Dublin, Dingle Accomplished : 13 miles / 21 km, elevation gain: 968 feet / 295 meters Longer Option : 22 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 2,378 feet / 725 meters Accommodations: Dingle Benners Hotel or Green Mount House
Soda Bread and Slea Head
Following a relaxed Irish breakfast, we hit the road to explore the beautiful Dingle Peninsula. This is Gaeltacht country where the Irish language is still widely spoken as a first language and culture and traditions remain strong. Our ride takes us west past a fascinating array of ancient sites including Iron Age forts, beehive huts, inscribed stones, and historical churches. The Peninsula culminates at the dramatic Slea Head—Europe’s most western point. After lunch, we’ll try our hand at one of these traditions as we learn to bake Irish soda bread. This evening, there is time to explore the charms of Dingle Town itself, including its traditional music scene before heading out for a dinner at a celebrated seafood restaurant.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Slea Head, Ballyferiter Accomplished : 26 miles / 42 km, elevation gain: 1,000 feet / 305 meters Longer Option : 34 miles / 55 km, elevation gain: 1,312 feet / 400 meters Accommodations: Dingle Benners Hotel or Green Mount House
From the Gap of Dunloe to Lakes of Killarney
Today we hit all the highlights, including the Gap of Dunloe, a private boat journey across Lough Leane with a local legend, a 15th-century castle, and a National Park. After an hour-long transfer, our ride begins on the Ivearagh Peninsula, dominated by Magillycuddy’s Reeks—Ireland’s highest mountain range, also known as “the black stacks.” Pass through the iconic Gap of Dunloe, a narrow rocky opening in the heart of the peninsula that leads to the shores of Lough Leane. A memorable boat journey carries us through Killarney National Park to the front door of Ross Castle, poised on the Lakes of Killarney. From here, it’s only a short walk to your Killarney hotel.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner Destinations : Gap of Dunloe, Killarney Accomplished : 29 miles / 47 km, elevation gain: 1,781 feet / 543 meters Longer Option : 59 miles / 95 km, elevation gain: 2,198 feet / 670 meters Accommodations: The Great Southern Killarney
Conquering the Ring of Kerry
Departing Killarney, we embark on the most challenging climb of the week. Through groves of twisted oaks, the road rises past the spectacular Ladie’s View to Moll’s Gap. Behind us is yesterday’s conquered Killarney National Park; on the other side of the gap lies one long descent to the south side of the peninsula and the picture-perfect village of Kenmare. We’ll arrive in time for the farmers market that fills the square every Wednesday with local crafts and delicacies. Tonight, choose from a wide range of top-notch restaurants in this renowned foodie village.
Meals : Breakfast / Lunch Destinations : Moll’s Gap, Kenmare Accomplished : 24 miles / 38 km, elevation gain: 1,250 feet / 381 meters Longer Option : 31 miles / 50 km, elevation gain: 1,250 feet / 381 meters Accommodations: Sheen Falls Lodge
The Beara Peninsula
Our final ride follows an easygoing route through the Caha mountains. We’ll bike into some idyllic countryside on virtually traffic-free roads—this peninsula is the least known in Kerry and truly a hidden gem. Stop for lunch at a quaint stone cottage with fantastic views and fill up on hearty, traditional fare. As we loop back to the hotel, hop off the bikes for a visit to a French chocolatier. An afternoon pick-me-up comes in the form of Benoit’s finest confections, and we’ll even have the chance to craft our own chocolates. This evening, join us for a farewell dinner and toast to a week of accomplishments over a bounty of local ingredients.

This was one of the most fantastic tour I have ever taken. Loved every minute of it!!! Can't wait to come back to Kilkenny.
Jason was a fantastic tour guide who shared lots of information and a great experience...Jason picked out a great route that showed us the intricate history of the town. Our only complaint is that he was so funny we couldn't stop laughing! As a family group of 7, we couldn't have chosen a better way to see Kilkenny.
Outstanding experience. There were 5 teens and 5 adults in our party. We all got sized with updated bikes of our choosing. Our guide Aiden was full of insightful information and great stories appreciated by all ages. He had a great personality and was quite funny and entertaining...Highly recommended!
Great bikes, lots of options for sizes - even for kids at all ages. Our guide, Liam told such good stories. This is THE BEST way to see Kilkenny!

Cyclists traverse Italy's Dolomite region.
June 3 is World Bicycle Day, marking the official recognition of the bike by the United Nations General Assembly. The first World Bicycle Day was celebrated in 2018 and was created to honor "the uniqueness, longevity, and versatility of the bicycle which has been in use for two centuries and is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean, and environmentally fit, sustainable means of transportation, fostering environmental stewardship and health.” That’s a remarkable degree of acclaim for a simple invention that was once made of wood and lacked the brakes, gears, bells, and even pedals that 21st century cyclists rely on.
Today, there are more than a billion bicycles in the world and each year the number of bicycles produced is double the number of cars. The U.S. is home to the second highest number of bikes on the planet (after China) which begs the question: Why aren’t more of us building our vacations around our beloved bikes?

The pandemic prompted an increase in bicycle tourism interest and the number of travellers looking to take their next trip on two wheels is steadily increasing. According to Coherent Marketing Insights, cycle tourism is projected to grow 9.5% each year over the next six years , becoming a $241.27 billion market by 2030. Still, it’s Europeans who are leading the pack on the tourism cycle track. They make up 30% of bike tourism revenue.
However, with the incorporation of tech-forward travel tools and travel providers offering on-the-ground support in a wider variety of destinations, bike tourism (including the solo, self-guided variety) is becoming more accessible and more appealing.

“As technology changes and travel behavior changes, people are realizing they don’t need to go in a group or don’t want to go in a group,” says Maria Elena Malpezzi-Price, co-owner of ExperiencePlus! bicycle tours . The company has just reintroduced self-guided cycling trips in Italy in response to these evolving travel trends, and they’re seeing travellers embrace the option for several reasons.
Clients, she says, appreciate the ability to customize their days around their own interests while remaining flexible. “People's sense of exploration and satisfaction are heightened when they do it on their own. You realize you're capable of doing that and it gives you a better understanding of how another part of the world works,” she explains.
“That's one of the goals for us—to truly share [the experience of] other countries, all of the ins and outs, like going into the grocery store and being able to make a sandwich to have your picnic. And then you realize, ‘I just had what would be considered a gourmet lunch in the US for $25 for like €5.’ Those are the kinds of things we encourage people to do.”

Price is yet another reason to choose the self-guided route. Without the added cost of a full-time guide, tourism providers can offer trips that maintain a high standard of quality at a lower price.
Malpezzi-Price says that the key to her company's success with self-guided tours comes from having a strong team on the ground in every destination and a good knowledge of the local hospitality providers and cycling infrastructure. “You really have to know your local resources well. You need to trust your taxi drivers. You need to trust your hotels. You need people to show up and deliver the bikes because there isn't a tour leader there to help curate and solve problems. So it has to be planned very well,” she says.
Each self-guided trip kicks off with a bike fitting and a thorough briefing so that travellers set off equipped with the knowledge and safety skills they need to enjoy their trip. A daily itinerary sets you up with a route and the details about your accommodations for the evening.
