Lake Eola and downtown Orlando

It may not be the most romantic Floridian destination, but Orlando often offers the best deals, especially during the lead up to the holidays. With all that money you've saved, why not treat the kids (and yourselves) to a pre-holiday visit to Disney World , Universal Studios , or Sea World Orlando ? Not up for insane crowds and listening to "It's a Small World" on repeat? Snorkel in Discovery Cove or visit the sloths in Orlando's Exotic Animal Experience .

Alternatively, take a day trip to some of the beaches near Orlando and soak up a little sun and sand for an afternoon. Or drive an hour east to explore the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. It's home to the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame and interactive exhibits on space missions.

Bundle up! Budapest's chilly weather keeps most tourists away in December, giving those who don't mind the cooler temperatures (ranging from -1.8 to 3.1°C) a break on both the cost of accommodations and the crowds at major attractions.

With the winter weather comes snowfall, blanketing the historic city and its beautiful sites in a magical dusting of powder. Take a look at photos of Buda Castle, the Hungarian Parliament Building, and Fisherman's Bastion to see just how dreamy Budapest can look in the winter. You can also shop for souvenirs at one of Budapest's Christmas Markets.

A beautiful beach in Punta Cana

Punta Cana is the place to be if you're dreaming of somewhere warm, bright, and beautiful. It's also a good deal by Caribbean standards, with affordable all-inclusive packages, and boy does it boast beautiful beaches .

Surrounded by turquoise water and white, sandy beaches, this picture-perfect spot on the eastern side of the Caribbean's Dominican Republic is pretty close to paradise. Adventurers can zipline through the rainforest canopy, windsurf, kiteboard, sail, dive, or snorkel. Not up for all of that? Don't worry. You can golf, ride horses, walk the beach, or float in the pool.

Magens Bay, St. Thomas

One of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean, the U.S. Virgin Islands offer an unforgettable and truly relaxing vacation. Those who visit St. Thomas can enjoy swimming with turtles, snorkeling, or diving in the bright blue ocean, golfing, shopping, and fantastic food—not bad for an island that's only 32 square miles.

This destination offers everything from luxury resorts to basic hotels and bed and breakfast lodging. It's easy to find something to fit your budget.

Stowe, Vermont

While some ski resorts in Vermont offer big savings on lift passes at this time of the year due to run closures, Stowe does not. That's the bad news. Now for the upside: they don't have to because they get more snow than most resorts in December and have more runs open for you to ski. If you book lift passes online at least seven days in advance, you'll save money no matter when you plan to come.

So, what's making this a cheap holiday, you ask? The savings come in the form of hotel deals. Rooms in early to mid-December can be over $100 cheaper a night, which leaves you with plenty left over for shopping or lift tickets.

While you're still soaking up the high from saving your hard-earned cash, take time out to revel in the beauty that is Stowe. It's been dubbed one of the most beautiful small towns in Vermont for a reason, after all!

Non-skiers will love the spa amenities found in many of the resorts, and the town's shopping and restaurants are first-class. In addition to the unbeatable skiing and snowboarding, activity seekers can enjoy indoor rock-climbing at Stowe Mountain Resort or ice-skating at Spruce Peak Village .

Winter sunrise over Lake Louise

Banff truly shines during its best season: winter. From world-class skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, skating, curling, and sledding, there's no lack of outdoor activities in this spectacular village.

Those who crave adventure won't want to miss the Johnston Canyon Icewalk . Conditions can be slippery and dangerous, so it's safest to book a guide. Want to relax? Book a horse-drawn sleigh ride through snowy meadows or bathe in the Banff Hot Springs .

Skiing at Banff is expensive, no matter when you do it. That said, the longer you ski, the more deals you get, especially in early to mid-December. If you book a "Stay and Ski" package, you'll notice great savings, including cheaper room rates and discounted lift tickets at three resorts: Banff Sunshine , Lake Louise Ski Resort , and Mount Norquay . Banff loves early birds, so the sooner you book, the better the savings. Same goes for your airfare.

The Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City during winter

July is the best month to visit Québec City for those who don't mind footing a hefty bill at hotels and restaurants, and elbowing their way through crowds of people searching for the city's best poutine. Traveling to this lovely Canadian gem in December, though, is magical and comparatively cheap.

This being Québec, you're pretty much guaranteed a dusting of snow or, more likely, a large dump that casts the historic buildings and parks in an enchanted light. Visit a German Christmas market at Le Grand Marché or another in Vieux-Québec . Traipse through festively adorned streets so European, you'll forget you're in Canada. Rue de Petit Champlain in particular begs to be photographed.

While you're in town, toboggan down Au 1884 , a giant sledding run thought to be the oldest attraction in Québec City. It lies beside North America's most photographed hotel, the Fairmont Le Chateâu Frontenac . Booking this iconic hotel around Christmas is the most expensive time to stay. Choosing a room during the first two weeks of December, on the other hand, will cut your price by at least half. Built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad company in 1892, this lavish building offers remarkable views of the Saint Lawrence River.

December is a great time to visit Costa Rica if you're looking for a bargain and ideal beach weather. This month marks the tail end of the rainy season, welcoming a refreshing break from the humidity that plagued the area for many months before. The temperature highs at this time hover around the 77 degree mark, perfect for adventuring through the jungle, ziplining, or lounging on some of Costa Rica's most beautiful beaches .

While some roads may be closed off and on due to residue from the rainy season, visitors usually experience dry skies at this time of year. They are also privy to competitive hotel and restaurant rates compared to other travelers who either don't want to risk the chance of rain by visiting in early December, or are hoping to travel for the holidays.

Speaking of holidays, the Christmas/New Year's season is one of the most popular (and expensive) times to visit Costa Rica. Some hotels book up months in advance, so those planning to stay over the holiday need to plan well in advance and be prepared to foot a pretty substantial bill.

Downtown Chicago in the winter

Winter is one of the cheapest times to travel to Chicago. As long as you avoid visiting during the Christmas holidays, you'll be in for some serious savings. Hotel rates drop dramatically once the barometer begins to plummet, and early December visitors, in particular, can notice a more budget-friendly bill at the end of their stay.

While frigid temps can at times make visiting Chicago's best parks a bit challenging, winter guests to the windy city can enjoy plenty of indoor attractions. The Art Institute of Chicago boasts a vast collection of historic and modern masterpieces, while a trip to the Alder Planetarium will help you get closer to the world beyond. The Museum of Science and Industry is another must-see that features multiple hands-on exhibits.

Plus, you'll have the chance to witness some of the festive charm that makes spending the holidays in Chicago an enjoyable experience. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival sets off at the end of November but lasts through the holiday season. December travelers can also take a twirl around the ice at Millennium Park .

River Legacy Parks in Arlington, Texas

One of the lesser visited cities in Texas, Arlington is a super cheap place to travel in December. The massive sports venues are a major draw for this small city, located between Dallas and Fort Worth. Its AT&T Stadium is home to the Dallas Cowboys . Choctaw Stadium (previously known as Global Life Park) is worthy of a tour, even if baseball isn't being played while you're there.

Arlington is likely the only place you can visit an International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame . Good news for amusement park lovers: the massive, Six Flags Over Texas is open weekends year-round and on holidays.

Arlington's Christkindl Market is known as one of the best Christmas markets in the US . In addition to all the tasty treats and handmade crafts you'd expect to find, visitors with kids will enjoy its family-friendly vibe.

Texas Live! is the city's entertainment hub. It boasts multiple restaurants, shops, and is home to the Live! by Loews - Arlington Texas resort. This is a chic and contemporary hotel boasting 300 luxury guest rooms and suites. Floor-to-ceiling windows make the most of the view and there are many options to enjoy food and refreshments on-site.

Charlotte, North Carolina skyline

While most tend to visit Charlotte during its warmer months, December is a cheaper time to explore the top things to do in this North Carolina gem. With highs hovering around the 50-degree mark, you'll be comfortable while you wander the sites and traipse around Uptown Charlotte or skate around the ice at the U.S. National Whitewater Center .

The NASCAR Hall of Fame , Billy Graham Library , and Discovery Place Science museum will keep everyone busy. When you're finished exploring, spend the money you saved on your hotel and airfare to enjoy a little retail therapy, or perhaps splurge on a fancy meal in one of the city's best restaurants.

Beautiful beach in Puerto Rico

There are few things as exhilarating as scoring a deal on a beach vacation, especially when you're leaving behind a cold, snowy winter. Although winter is the most popular time to visit Puerto Rico, travelers can still enjoy affordable rates and budget-friendly airfare to this cheap Caribbean destination.

Puerto Rico is a hot spot for lovers of the sun, sand, and surf. It's home to multiple beautiful beaches , so visitors won't be at a loss for somewhere fabulous to unfurl their towels. Wandering the colorful streets of Old San Juan is one of the most popular things to do in Puerto Rico –and it doesn't cost a penny unless you fall prey to temptation and buy wares sold in its charming shops.

El Morro Fort lies in Old San Juan, at the tip of a peninsula. This historic spot is worthy of a visit, as is the impressive Castillo de San Cristóbal , the largest Spanish fort built in the New World.

Is Christmas Day a good day to fly?

Pre-christmas travel: the worst days to fly, post-christmas travel: the worst days to fly, the smarter, cheaper departure date when flying for christmas, cards that earn rewards when booking flights.

Most weeks of the year, Fridays are the busiest days to fly, checkpoint data from the Transportation Security Administration shows. And just ahead of Christmas 2023, travelers may face one of the busiest Fridays yet: Friday, Dec. 22.

NerdWallet analyzed the past four years of travel data from the TSA to better understand what travel patterns might look like this December, why the Friday before Christmas will be brutal and to uncover the best days to fly around Christmas.

Yes, Christmas Day is the best day to fly out of all the days in the weeks before and after the holiday — assuming you don’t mind spending part of your holiday in the air.

While airport crowds dramatically increase in the days before and after Christmas, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day crowds are light. Last year, 23.4% more people flew on the day after Christmas compared to the number of people who flew on Christmas Day, which fell on a Sunday.

Not only does flying on the holiday mean fewer crowds, it’s also likely to entail lower prices. Flights departing on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day average 26% lower than peak prices during the Christmas season, according to the 2023 Holiday Travel Outlook from travel booking site Hopper. For a one-way, domestic airfare, the savings amounts to about $114 per ticket, according to Hopper.

If you do travel on Christmas Day, book the first flight out to reduce your risk of delays. In the first half of 2023, 7.8% of flights were delayed because an aircraft arrived late, according to Bureau of Transportation Statistics data. By taking that first flight out, you remove the chance of a previous flight delay snowballing into your flight being delayed, too.

Here were the busiest travel days at U.S. airports in the seven days before Dec. 25 for the past four years:

In 2022, the busiest air travel day leading up to Christmas was Wednesday, Dec. 21. On that day, 2.4 million people passed through TSA security checkpoints, marking the single busiest day in the 7 days ahead of Christmas. The following day, Thursday, Dec. 22, was also busy with 2.3 million air travelers.

This year, though, it’s the Friday before Christmas that could very likely be the worst day to fly in the week ahead of the holiday. In fact, Friday, Dec. 22 is one of the top three busiest days for flights booked in either December 2023 or January 2024, according to air booking data provided to NerdWallet by Chase Travel.

Here are a couple of reasons why Friday, Dec. 22 is set to be so busy:

Friday is a busy travel day, period

For starters, Fridays always trend busy at airports, no matter the season. It’s the same day many business travelers head home while vacationers jet off for the weekend.

In the first eight months of 2022, the average number of travelers at U.S. airports was 20% higher on Fridays than on Tuesdays (the least busy day for air travel, on average).

Friday will be expensive

Fares will be highest for departures on the Friday before Christmas, as travelers look to make a long weekend out of the holiday, according to the 2023 Holiday Travel Outlook from travel booking site Hopper.

When averaged over the past four years, Dec. 27 has historically been the busiest day to fly in the seven days after Christmas. Dec. 30 has also historically been busy, as some travelers fly home from Christmas festivities while others head out for a New Year’s celebration. According to Chase Travel data, Saturday, Dec. 30 joins Friday, Dec. 22 on the podium of busiest travel days across December 2023 and January 2024 (the other day is Saturday, Dec. 23).

As far as most expensive? This year, Tuesday, Dec. 26 is the most expensive day to return in the week after Christmas, according to Hopper.

During the week of Christmas, the standard rules around the best (and worst) days to fly don’t necessarily apply, and shifting your itinerary by just a couple of days can drastically change the price you pay for holiday travel .

If you work a standard Monday-Friday work week, then jetting off after work on Friday, Dec. 22, might make the most sense. That’s the schedule most people are likely to follow, and if you join in, you’ll pay — both in terms of airport crowds and in literal price.

But if you can be a bit flexible, avoid the Friday departure and try:

Flying earlier in the week: Crowds ease up the farther away from Christmas you get, so — if you can work remotely or afford to take days off — do it. While crowds will likely be high in the days ahead of Christmas, they’ll likely be lighter on the Monday and Tuesday before.

Traveling on Christmas Eve: If it’s important that you’re at your destination by Christmas morning, then leaving on Christmas Eve is your best move. While crowds are heavier than Christmas Day, Christmas Eve is typically the least-crowded day of the seven days ahead of the holiday.

Skipping holiday travel completely: Consider shifting your celebration by a couple of days or weeks. January and February tend to be the cheapest months to fly, so you might want to wait to visit family and friends until then.

Oh, and another great reason to travel in December to these locations I’ve chosen (aside from the cheap rates) is the festive and holiday events! I’ve tried to include lots of options for what to see and do where possible too!

So, here are some affordable options for the where to travel in December in the USA.

Now let’s get into it!

Here are the cheapest places to travel in December in the USA…

New orleans, louisiana.

cheapest days to travel in december

First up on my list of the cheapest places to travel in December in the USA, it’s New Orleans.

New Orleans offers a unique blend of culture, history, and a festive atmosphere during December, so it’s a fantastic place to check out during the winter.

In December, I recommend checking out the French Quarter, enjoying the live music, and savoring the delicious Creole cuisine.

But don’t forget some of the more seasonal events too!

  • Krampus Dark Christmas Market
  • The Roosevelt New Orleans Waldorf Wonderland Lobby Lighting
  • Porter Lyons Sparkling Holiday Soirée
  • Deutsches Haus Christkindl Market
  • LPO Holiday Spectacular
  •  St. Nick Celebration

Because December is one of the low-season times in New Orleans (peak season is February – May, in case you were wondering) you’ll get cheaper prices at hotels during the winter, making it one of the most affordable places to travel in December in the USA.

San Antonio, Texas

cheapest days to travel in december

December also tends to be a quieter month in San Antonio , so it’s a great choice for this list!

Peak months in San Antonio tend to be during the summer – and winter tends to attract fewer crowds. This means cheaper rates for you!

So, why visit San Antonio? Well, it’s is known for its rich history and affordable attractions, meaning there’s always something interesting and fun to get involved with.

And don’t forget the festive events and holiday-themed events going on December:

  • SeaWorld San Antonio’s Christmas Celebration

Las Vegas, Nevada

cheapest days to travel in december

Las Vegas is next on my list of the cheapest places to travel in December in the USA. And one of the most fun too!

There is tons to do in Las Vegas, from shows, concerts, restaurants, and gambling, to Grand Canyon day trips!

Whilst Las Vegas isn’t exactly cheap mid to late December (Christmas and New Year mean rates shoot up) it is definitely more affordable at the start of December.

Because of the colder weather, early December is a budget-friendly time to visit Las Vegas. You might also be able to grab some cheaper deals on hotels at this time, especially if you have any member benefits or reward programs.

For the cheapest hotel rates during December in Las Vegas, look at weekdays (instead of weekends). Rates will be lowest at this time and most competitive.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

cheapest days to travel in december

Albuquerque is my next suggestion for the cheapest places to travel in December in the USA.

This lesser-known city hosts the River of Lights holiday event during December, featuring beautiful light displays. It’s a lovely activity and definitely a reason to visit during December.

Additionally, the city offers various affordable outdoor activities and cultural experiences to enjoy in December, making it a really fun and affordable place to visit in December.

How would I spend my time? Well, aside from eating my way around the entire city, I’d explore the city’s parks, enjoy food trucks, and experience the lively nightlife.

I’d also want to experience lots of the December events that happen during winter too!

  • Miracle on 5th Street cocktail pop-up
  • German-Texan Heritage Society Christmas Market
  • Ballet Austin’s festive show
  • Austin Trail of Lights
  • Ice Skating On The Plaza at Whole Foods
  • Armadillo Christmas Bazaar
  • Driskill Grand Lobby Tree Lighting

Portland, Oregon

cheapest days to travel in december

Next on my list of the cheapest places to travel in December in the USA, it’s quirky and cute Portland.

If you’re not too bothered about the weather being warm or dry (because the weather in Portland isn’t known for being particularly great at this time of year!) then Portland could be a great choice for you!

Portland is a haven for nature enthusiasts, with many outdoor activities available. (parks and hikes are right on the doorstep).

But Portland is also fantastic for people who simply love soaking in a city’s vibe. Of which, Portland has a great one.

Visit many of the city’s breweries, food carts and markets, and enjoy being one of the quirkiest and coolest cities in the USA. There are also plenty of seasonal events in Portland in December too!

Phoenix, Arizona

cheapest days to travel in december

Phoenix in Arizona is my next suggestion for cheapest places to travel in December in the USA.

Pheonix offers pretty good and mild weather during December, making it a fantastic destination for December vacations.

Memphis, Tennessee

cheapest days to travel in december

Memphis is next on my list of the cheapest places to travel in December in the USA.

Obviously, one of the most compelling reasons to visit Memphis in December is its affordability, but there are so many other reasons to love it here too.

Beyond the cost savings, Memphis is steeped in rich cultural and musical heritage, and the temperate December weather allows for pleasant outdoor exploration.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the soulful rhythm of Beale Street, tour the iconic Graceland, or delve into the city’s profound civil rights history at the National Civil Rights Museum.

Here are some other seasonal events to look forward to:

  • St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend
  • Memphis Botanic Garden’s Holiday Wonders
  • Memphis Christmas Parade
  • Memphis Holiday Market
  • Ice skating at the Memphis Zoo

With fewer crowds and reasonable prices, December in Memphis offers a remarkable blend of history, music, and value for every traveler.

Kansas City, Missouri

cheapest days to travel in december

Next up on my list of affordable travel locations in December, it’s Kansas City !

If great food and great music is your kind of thing, then I think you’re going to love it here because Kansas City is known for its barbecue, jazz music, and affordable attractions.

Here are some of the best winter activities on offer in December too:

  • Dazzling lighting ceremonies
  • Evergy Plaza Lights
  • Union Station lights and decorations
  • Christmas in the Park light display
  • The Soul of Santa

How would I spend my time in Kansas City? Well, I’d be sure to explore the local museums, enjoy lots of live music, and (obviously) savor the local cuisine.

Nashville, Tennessee

cheapest days to travel in december

How could I write a list of the cheapest places to travel in December in the USA, and not include the iconic Nashville ?

Nashville is ‘off-peak’ in December, so it’s one of the most affordable times of year to visit this musical city.

As you probably already know, Nashville offers a vibrant music scene and rich history, which can pretty much fill up an entire itinerary!

But alongside the year-round attractions, there are lots of fantastic seasons events too:

  • Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center Christmas lights
  • Bass Pro Shops Santa’s Wonderland
  • “Dickens of a Christmas” event
  • “The Dancing Lights of Christmas” event
  • Holiday lights at Cheekwood Estate & Gardens
  • Festive tour of Belmont Mansion

But you can also spend time exploring the city’s iconic landmarks strolling along the Cumberland River, and trying local breweries too!

Santa Fe, New Mexico

cheapest days to travel in december

Another wonderful suggestion for the affordable places to travel in December in the USA, is Sante Fe in New Mexico .

Santa Fe is known for its unique Pueblo-style architecture, art galleries, and rich Native American and Spanish heritage.

It’s one of the cities that people absolutely love visiting, because it has such a distinct energy, appearance and vibe.

The city is also really well-known for it’s vibrant art scene, so if you consider yourself a bit of a creative, I think you’re going to find lots to love in Santa Fe!

Charleston, South Carolina

cheapest days to travel in december

If you’re looking for cheap places to travel, that are also super cute and charming, look no further than Charleston.

Charleston, South Carolina, is a delightful destination to discover in December , and it also offers a budget-friendly experience for travelers at this time of year too!

As well as being affordable during December, the city is also adorned with festive decorations, creating a magical atmosphere perfect for the holiday season.

Here are some festive events you can expect to experience:

  • Light the Lake at Colonial Lake
  • Holiday Festival of Lights
  • Charleston Holiday Market
  • Life-size gingerbread house inside Hotel Bennett
  • Miracle on Market Street

And I don’t know about you, but one of the main reasons I love traveling in December is because I love feeling festive!

When you visit Charleston, you can stroll through historic streets adorned with twinkling lights, visit historic sites (with reduced winter rates), and enjoy the many cafes and restaurants too.

Tampa, Florida

cheapest days to travel in december

Tampa is next on my list of affordable locations to visit in December!

Florida, in general, isn’t the cheapest destination in the US during December because people tend to flock there for the warm weather.

But, saying that, some cities in Florida tend to be much cheaper than others. Where Orlando and the Keys will be very pricy, Tampa tends to be much more affordable in comparison.

Tampa has everything you’d expect from Florida. Great weather, lovely beaches, lots of amenities, shopping and much more.

Here are some of the more festive events you can experience during December:

  • Busch Gardens Christmas Town
  • Tampa River Lighted Holiday Boat Parade
  • Winter Village at Curtis Hixon Park
  • Oakdale Christmas House

Last, on our list of the cheapest places to travel in December in the USA, it’s Santa Rosa.

If you’re looking to explore wineries and vineyards as part of your December vacation, then you can absolutely find some great deals with Santa Rosa.

Santa Rosa is one of the biggest cities, closest to the Napa Valley wine region, and because it’s a large city, you can find quite competitive hotel rates (especially in December).

Of course, in terms of things to do in Santa Rosa, you have all the stunning wineries withing an hour’s drive. Perfect for any wine lovers!

But you also have some stunning landscapes and scenery to enjoy too around the city!

Best cheap winter vacations.

Some destinations see prices skyrocket in winter, but U.S. News ensures that your dollars will stretch further with this list of the best cheap winter vacations. Our editors considered user votes in addition to factors like the cost and quality of accommodations, dining and attractions to narrow down the destinations with the best value – and weather – for a winter getaway. Help us determine next year's list by voting for your favorite winter destinations below.

Turks & Caicos

Quebec city, san miguel de allende, puerto rico, big sky, mt.

cheapest days to travel in december

Hotels in Mérida, the capital of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, can cost as little as $50 per night in winter, so you'll have plenty of cash to indulge in the city's offerings. Dive far back into Mérida's history while visiting El Gran Museo del Mundo Maya de Mérida and the nearby Dzibilchaltún ruins, both of which explore local Mayan history for inexpensive admission fees. Meanwhile, in the heart of the city, you'll find influence from Spanish conquerors at the free Catedral de Mérida. Don't forget to explore Mérida's food scene at one of its markets or restaurants.

cheapest days to travel in december

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a popular vacation spot for a reason: Here, you'll find incomparable scenery, glistening white sand and turquoise water. When you're done basking on the beach, grab some snorkeling gear and head to the water; you'll discover an impressive barrier reef by these Caribbean islands that is ripe for exploration. To save money on your island getaway, skip staying at a luxury resort and instead reserve a vacation rental or a room at a smaller hotel. Save even more money by avoiding accommodations on Providenciales, where the country's priciest lodging options are located.

cheapest days to travel in december

It's not hard to plan a cheap tropical vacation in Jamaica. Save money while still enjoying Jamaica's warm winter weather in the low 80s by staying at an all-inclusive resort that includes extras like water sports equipment and private beach access in their base fare. You can find even more deals on accommodations and airfare if you book a vacation package or time your trip for early winter before the snowbirds arrive. With the money you save, book a tour to see one of Jamaica's natural wonders, like Dunn's River Falls or the Blue Hole.

cheapest days to travel in december

Located on the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum's status as a major tourist destination comes as no surprise. Its crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches and fascinating Mayan ruins draw travelers in droves, and winter's pleasant temperatures in the low 80s only add to its appeal. But while this tropical paradise offers plenty of room for luxury, it's possible to stick to a budget. Beyond the favorable exchange rate ($1 equals about $18 Mexican pesos), you can also save money by dining in Tulum Pueblo and choosing accommodations away from the beach.

cheapest days to travel in december

Those in search of a well-rounded winter getaway should travel to Taos, New Mexico. History buffs can spend their trip strolling through Taos Plaza or learning about Taos Pueblo, an adobe village that has been inhabited by the Taos Indian Tribe for more than 1,000 years. Meanwhile, skiers can zip down the slopes at Taos Ski Valley (save money by looking for winter packages and purchasing your tickets before the peak ski season begins). When travelers need to relax, they can head to Manby or Black Rock hot springs to rejuvenate in the naturally warm (and free) waters.

cheapest days to travel in december

The cobblestone streets will probably be covered in snow, but that shouldn't discourage you from exploring neighborhoods like Old Québec and Quartier Petit Champlain. The Canadian city celebrates its way through the frigid temperatures with free or low-cost events and festivals that last from Christmastime to Carnaval in February. When you need to warm up, explore the splendid interiors of Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral and the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Shrine, both of which offer free entry.

cheapest days to travel in december

It's no secret that Lake Tahoe is a great wintertime travel destination. This lake that straddles the California-Nevada border is known for its premier cold-weather activities, including cross-country skiing, sledding, ice skating and snowshoeing. To save some coin during your trip, plan on booking your getaway early and staying at one of the lake's ski resorts. Though resorts can get pricey at times, they often offer vacation packages or multinight discounts to help you cut costs.

cheapest days to travel in december

A winter vacation in San Miguel de Allende should include time spent exploring the city's markets and cultural institutions, including the Fábrica La Aurora, a textile mill-turned-art-museum and shop. Both El Jardín, the city's main plaza, and Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, an ornate church, are additional must-see sights that won't cost you a dime to enjoy. You'll also want to sample the vast foodie scene: This Mexican city offers everything from fine dining to cheap (but delectable) food truck meals.

cheapest days to travel in december

Though the Southwest brings to mind deserts with scorching temperatures, Santa Fe, New Mexico, conveniently sits close to several different ski resorts. Not only can you schuss the slopes in 40-degree weather, but you can also spend less on lift tickets here than you would in more popular ski destinations. Back in Santa Fe, you can admire art at Canyon Road's 80-plus galleries or stroll through Santa Fe Plaza without spending a cent. If you time your visit for late February, you can also score deals on dining out during Santa Fe's Restaurant Week.

cheapest days to travel in december

If all you dream about for a winter vacation is escaping to a tranquil Mexican beach, Cozumel is your answer. Turquoise water, great snorkeling and warm weather (think: average highs sit in the mid-80s) attract travelers in droves. For lodging, skip the expensive resorts and opt for a bed-and-breakfast or a vacation rental. Use the money you save on accommodations to visit Cozumel's parks, including Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park and Punta Sur Eco Beach Park, which both charge modest entrance fees.

cheapest days to travel in december

Puerto Rico's warm winter temperatures (highs consistently sit in the low 80s) and robust calendar of free festivals and events make it an appealing choice for a cheap winter getaway. Although the winter months bring an influx of tourists to this U.S. territory's sandy shores – raising hotel and airfare prices – it is still possible to achieve an affordable vacation as long as you plan far enough in advance. Luckily, many of Puerto Rico's must-do activities are free, including hiking through El Yunque National Forest and exploring historic Old San Juan.

cheapest days to travel in december

Boasting more than 5,800 acres of skiable terrain, Big Sky, Montana, is a winter sports enthusiast's dream. Here, you'll find a healthy mix of slopes for everyone from beginners to experts. While lift tickets will take up a hefty portion of your budget, if you plan early and book in advance, you can score deals on both your accommodations and lift tickets at Big Sky Resort. For even more savings on lift tickets, which cost more when demand is high, visit on weekdays in early December and opt to ski later in the day to cut down on fees for the popular Lone Peak Tram.

cheapest days to travel in december

Winter in Banff is characterized by snow and skiing. This Canadian destination enjoys excellent skiing conditions with exceptional scenery. What's more, lodging and lift ticket prices are a bargain compared to other ski spots in North America, but you'll need to book them a few months in advance to ensure availability and the best prices. With the money you've saved, you can treat yourself to a sleigh ride or an extra après-ski drink. Though you'll need to purchase a National Park Pass to stay in Banff; this fee also covers access to off-slope wonders like Lake Louise, where you can skate and admire ice sculptures.

cheapest days to travel in december

Thanks to its location in the Caribbean Sea, Martinique offers ideal weather for travelers seeking a warm respite from chilly winters. Temperatures sit in the 80s throughout winter, so you can spend your days soaking up some sun on Les Salines and Diamant (Diamond) beaches. If you plan on staying in Fort-de-France, the country's capital, book early to ensure you snag affordable accommodations during Martinique's peak tourist season. For additional savings, book a hotel farther inland.

cheapest days to travel in december

Gatlinburg, Tennessee's wintertime highs sit in the upper 40s and low 50s, meaning you can still take advantage of the town's most popular attraction: Great Smoky Mountains National Park. After entering the national park, which charges a $5 daily parking fee, hike a section of the famous Appalachian Trail to Charlies Bunion, an outcrop with stunning mountain vistas, or trek the Rainbow Falls Trail for a chance to see the path's namesake falls frozen over. When you need to warm up, head back to town to sample the local moonshine at Sugarlands Distilling Company or Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine's "The Holler" distillery for a small fee.

These are the best places to visit in December in the U.S. and around the world.

The end of the year is incredibly busy with gift shopping, decorating for the holidays, and family gatherings. So before you run out of open days, take some time to book that winter vacation — even if it’s just a weekend getaway. Whether you’re looking for a warm-weather escape to end the year or a festive destination brimming with holiday cheer, we’ve got you covered. From ski towns to beach resorts, here are 11 of the best places to travel in December.

Lake Tahoe, California

Don Eim/Travel + Leisure

Snowfall usually begins in late November in Lake Tahoe, so you can be one of the first to hit the slopes when you visit in December. The destination’s sapphire blue lake, pine forests, and snow-covered peaks are gorgeous this time of year. Stay on the south shore at Edgewood Lake Tahoe , which hosts holiday festivities throughout the month; the resort’s new multi-bedroom Villa Suites are perfect for families or groups. On the north shore, Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe features ski-in/ski-out access and a mountainside concierge. Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe and Edgewood Lake Tahoe were both among Travel + Leisure’s Best Resorts in the Western United States in 2022. Nearby Reno Tahoe offers a wide range of winter activities and a convenient airport with flights from many major cities.

Palm Springs, California

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

If you’re looking for mild weather, superb restaurants, golf, plush hotels, spas, and great shopping, put Palm Springs on your December must-visit list. And at just two hours from Los Angeles and San Diego, the Greater Palm Springs area is easy to reach. Check the concert and sports events schedule at the new Acrisure Arena , which hosted Cirque du Soleil’s new Corteo this summer — a first for the desert venue. Lodging ranges from expansive resorts like the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort to boutique and adult-only properties. Stay just steps from downtown Palm Springs in a quiet and historic neighborhood at Auric House ; you’ll feel like a local as you stroll to restaurants, shops, and breakfast at nearby Korakia Pensione .

Charleston, South Carolina

ChristopherPillitz/In Pictures via Getty Images Images

Charleston topped the T+L World’s Best Awards list this year for favorite cities in the United States, and it’s a perfect destination for the holidays, with gorgeous decorations adorning historic buildings, streets, and neighborhoods. Christmas markets, tree lightings, parades, and seasonal events inspire the holiday spirit during December. The Charleston Place gets decked out for the season, and the other best Charleston hotels include the Emeline , Planters Inn (a Relais & Châteaux property), and The Vendue , Charleston’s art hotel.

Newport Beach, California

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

With weather in the 60s and lots of Southern California sunshine, Newport Beach is a great December destination for hiking, cruising the harbor in a Duffy boat, whale watching, visiting Balboa Island, or strolling along the beach. The city celebrates the holiday season with the annual Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade each night from Dec. 13-17, when more than 100 decorated yachts, boats, kayaks, and canoes cruise the waterfront, along with music, fireworks, and glittering lights. Stay near the action at Lido House , an Autograph Collection hotel, or be among the first to stay at the new Pendry Newport Beach . For five-star luxury, two oceanfront golf courses, and stunning views, choose The Resort at Pelican Hill . Accommodation options here include bungalow rooms and suites with fireplaces and private terraces, as well as Mediterranean-style villas with two, three, or four bedrooms.

Branson, Missouri

tomofbluesprings/Getty Images

In Branson, the two-month-long Ozark Mountain Christmas celebration kicks off in early November, and it’s an incredible way to get into the holiday spirit. Known as “America’s Christmas Tree City” for good reason, Branson features more than 1,500 decorated trees, shows, parades, 6.5 million lights, drive-through displays , and photo opportunities with Santa Claus. Throughout December, there’s caroling by the fire, story times, and a candy village displayed in the lobby of the Chateau on the Lake . At Big Cedar Lodge , guests can sip hot cocoa, see twinkling holiday lights, skate at the Winter Wonderland ice rink, make wreaths, and bake gingerbread — and that’s just a few of the property’s annual Home for the Holidays activities.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Nikada/Getty Images

December is considered one of the best months to visit Dubai thanks to moderate weather that’s ideal for being outdoors exploring the city. Visitors will find a festive atmosphere and myriad seasonal events , from elaborately decorated Christmas trees and holiday markets to shopping malls decked out for the season. See public art in the Dubai Design District, lounge at the beachfront in La Mer, or visit the historic Al Fahidi District. Stay at the elegant Habtoor Palace , LXR Hotels & Resorts, or the plush Burj Al Arab Jumeirah . Welcoming guests starting Dec. 1, One&Only One Za’abeel is located in the heart of the city near the Dubai World Trade Centre. The Lana , Dorchester Collection, Dubai, will also open in December beside the Dubai Canal.

Riviera Maya, Mexico

Located on the Yucatan Peninsula along the Caribbean, Riviera Maya is 30 minutes south of Cancun and offers calm seas, sandy beaches, sunny weather, and lodging for all tastes, from boutique hotels to lavish resorts. Maya archaeological sites are fascinating to explore, and cenotes — caves or underground holes filled with cool water — are another intriguing feature of the Yucatan. Mayakoba , a private community with nearly 600 acres of lagoons, jungles, and beaches, includes El Camaleón Golf Club , luxury residences, and four resorts: Fairmont Mayakoba , Andaz Mayakoba , Banyan Tree Mayakoba , and Rosewood Mayakoba . Celebrate the new year with legendary Mexican musician Luis Miguel in concert on Dec. 31 at the nearby golf course. Also in Riviera Maya is Maroma , A Belmond Hotel, now open after an extensive renovation and redesign led by Tara Bernerd & Partners .

Vienna, Austria

Ambika Verma/Travel + Leisure

While Vienna is lovely year-round, it is dazzling in December, with holiday decorations, lights, markets, and Christmas trees galore. Delicious Austrian food is part of the celebration, and mugs of Christmas punch (made with rum and/or brandy) keep shoppers warm as they browse or sample wiener schnitzel, sausage, apple strudel, or traditional roasted chestnuts. Or, stop into a café for coffee and Sachertorte, a famous Austrian chocolate cake. T+L readers recently voted for their favorite Vienna hotels , and The Ritz-Carlton, Vienna took the top spot. The Rosewood Vienna , which just opened last year, and The Amauris Vienna , a Relais & Châteaux property, are also fine options. Note that river cruises are a great way to see Europe’s many Christmas markets, and itineraries are offered through several companies, including AmaWaterways , Viking River Cruises , and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises .

Fort Worth, Texas

Think about this lively Texas city for an end-of-year vacation or weekend getaway, when the weather is in the comfortable high 50s and there’s so much to do. The Fort Worth Zoo features holiday decorations, lights, falling snow, and visits from Santa in December. The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District , where ranchers once traded cattle and cowboys drove the animals to market, is still in action with a daily longhorn cattle drive, restaurants, rodeo shows, bars, and tours of the original wooden corrals. Stay at Hotel Drover , in the heart of the District, where holiday decor and activities add to the fun. Near the downtown Sundance Square entertainment area, Kimpton Harper Hotel is set in a historic building that was once the tallest in Fort Worth. The Crescent Hotel, Fort Worth opens this autumn and features a Canyon Ranch Wellness Club with a full menu of fitness classes and spa treatments.

U.S. Virgin Islands

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

Located in the northeastern Caribbean Sea, St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas make up the U.S. Virgin Islands. Whether you travel to the Caribbean for the beaches, water sports, outdoor adventures, shopping, or nightlife, these islands have myriad options. Join the fun at St. Croix’s Crucian Christmas Festival, which begins Dec. 10 and combines Caribbean, African, Spanish, and Dutch influences in traditional carnival events. The closing parade happens on Jan. 6, when thousands of masqueraders fill the streets. Among accommodation options are the waterfront King Christian Hotel in downtown Christiansted, St. Croix and The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas , which hosts holiday activities throughout December. Passports are not required for travel to this United States territory.

This sunny island in the eastern Caribbean is a perfect December escape, whether you’re traveling with friends or family or looking for a romantic getaway. From relaxing on the beach or by the pool to active adventures like kitesurfing, diving, or playing golf, there are lots of fun things to do on Anguilla. Places to stay include boutique hotels, resorts, villas, and apartments at a range of prices. Consider the family-friendly Four Seasons Resort & Residences Anguilla , Malliouhana Resort , and Frangipani Beach Resort , where there’s fun for everyone. Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel and Altamer offer private villas. Zemi Beach House on Shoal Bay Beach features a spa set in a 306-year-old Thai house.

10 Cheap Destinations for Christmas Travel

' height=

See recent posts by Tracy Stewart

Wish you'd had the chance to travel more this year? If you're willing to break with tradition, December holidays are the ideal time to squeeze in another trip. True, holiday fares can be insanely inflated, though for the price your paying to fly home to the fam, you could easily spend the same (or often less) and explore a new city, domestic or international.

As is the case with any trip, the more flexible you are with travel dates, the better your odds of finding a low fare. Instead of departing Friday, December 22, and returning Monday, January 1, search off-peak dates. Below are a few sample trips we've spotted recently.

Holiday fares to South Florida aren't too too crazy, at least when departing from East Coast hubs. Seen below, we found seats going for $296 in Economy from New York to Miami on Delta. Packing light? You may be able to get away with flying Basic Economy for $267 and save yourself a few bucks.

If Miami fares aren't looking so great from your departure city, consider flying into nearby Fort Lauderdale or even West Palm Beach .

cheapest days to travel in december

Not so long ago, a holiday flight from the US to Bergen would have cost an arm and a leg. And forget about flying nonstop! Of course, that's all changed since Norwegian entered the picture. The budget carrier added nonstop service from both Providence and Newburgh/Stewart earlier this year, with round-trip fares often below $300, and hardly much more for off-peak holiday trips.

We found seats for $328 round-trip from Newburgh when booking separate tickets via Google Flights.

cheapest days to travel in december

Jacked up holiday fares coupled with the UK's already high airport taxes might deter you from even considering London at all. But it's certainly possible to string together a reasonably priced ticket for off-peak holiday travel, particularly on one of the many budget carriers servicing Gatwick or Stansted . We recently found seats for $677 nonstop from Miami to London on American (booked via Finnair). Meanwhile from the West Coast, Los Angeles to London is going for $709 nonstop. Not bad at all for holiday travel!

New Orleans

Fares to New Orleans tend to be fairly inexpensive from most corners of the US. We recently found seats from Philly for $118 nonstop on Frontier for off-peak travel, and from Chicago for $385 nonstop for peak travel (that's Economy, not Basic Economy, by the way!), departing December 24, returning January 1.

cheapest days to travel in december

Ok, so maybe not such a cheap option for East Coast departures, but it is possible to find a bargain to Seattle from the Southwestern US. We found seats going for $259 round-trip on Alaska. Depart LAX bright and early on Christmas morning, return from Seattle on Tuesday, January 2. Nonstop, even!

Fares to San Diego have dropped quite a bit as of late, with holiday dates going for under $300. A rarity!

We found seats from Dallas for $285 round-trip, nonstop, on American, departing SAN on Tuesday, December 19, returning from SAN on Tuesday, December 26.  Even for East Coast departures are doable. As of this afternoon, JetBlue had seats from New York for $281 nonstop, departing December 18, returning December 25 (in the morning, but an excellent holiday fare all the same!).

cheapest days to travel in december

Thanks to JetBlue for some much needed competition in the post AirTran days, Savannah has again become an affordable destination, and that includes the holidays.

We found seats from Detroit for $315 round-trip, nonstop, departing December 18, returning December 25. And from Newark, United is offering $305 round-trip, nonstop, departing December 18, returning December 26. These fares are in Economy, with slightly lower fares available in Basic Economy, though with carry-on restrictions.

Short travel time, warm weather, and relatively low fares make Mexico an attractive option for the holidays. Depending, of course, on your departure city, you'll probably have more luck snagging an off-peak fare to popular resort destinations such as Cancun and Cabo .

Searching Alaska Air, we found seats from Los Angeles to Cabo for $231 nonstop. And not quite as low but still somewhat reasonable for holiday travel, we spotted Chicago to Cancun for $384 nonstop on American, departing ORD on Monday, December 18, returning from CUN on Tuesday, December 26.

A quick trip to Las Vegas for Christmas? Not as expensive as you might think! We easily found seats from Chicago for $199 round-trip, departing ORD on December 23, returning from LAS late on Christmas day. Even from New York, we were able to find a $308 nonstop, departing JFK on Monday, December 18, returning from LAS on Christmas morning.

cheapest days to travel in december

if Denver is on your short list of holiday destinations, you may have luck with Frontier Airlines, as we did below. From Los Angeles, we were able to find seats for $164 round-trip, nonstop, departing LAX on December 23, returning from DEN on the afternoon of December 25. Even on United, our search turned up a $281 economy fare, nonstop, from Chicago. Lower still by $50 if Basic Economy suits you.

Hyatt Regency Orlando

It's not the flights or the hotels in Orlando that will stretch your budget (both can be found at fairly reasonable prices if you plan in advance), but the activities. Since Orlando is home to Disney World , if you plan on attending any of the parks, you'll be designating a large chunk of your travel budget to tickets. But the theme parks aren't the only great thing to do in the city —from visiting some amazing museums to enjoying nature-filled parks, there are tons of other activities that are often overlooked. If you do plan to spend a day or two at Magic Kingdom or Universal Studios, you can rest easy knowing that the rest of your trip was budgeted accordingly.

Philly is home to some amazing attractions, wonderful views, cool hotels , and of course, incredible history. There are plenty of great free and low-cost activities, including seeing the iconic Liberty Bell, walking past The President's House (the original “White House” before Washington, DC), and exploring Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the US. If you find time to try a Philly cheesesteak while you're there, all the better.

When to book, fly: Expedia's booking tips can help make your trip more carefree

cheapest days to travel in december

A new survey by Expedia shows what you probably already know: Americans find air travel stressful.

According to data released Wednesday, travel is a top stressor for 55% of respondents, with some saying the thought of booking a flight and going to the airport makes them more anxious than filing their taxes or even going to the dentist.

“People, according to the research, are really stressed about the possibility of their flights being canceled and experience those disruptions,” Christie Hudson, head of Expedia public relations in the U.S., told USA TODAY. “There’s some stress that’s happening even just from the planning process,” especially around getting the best possible deal on tickets.

With that in mind, she highlighted some of the survey’s findings and offered some of her top tips for reducing stress and getting the best deal when you travel.

What’s the best day to book your flights?

The best day to book is a constant topic of debate among travelers. According to Hudson, Expedia’s data suggests that Sunday is the likely answer.

While she acknowledged that airline prices are extremely dynamic and booking on Sunday doesn’t guarantee you the best price every time, on average it is when the cheapest fares are available.

“We’re looking at billions of data points of actual booked and flown flights,” Hudson said.

According to Expedia’s research, booking on Sunday can save you around 6% on domestic flights and 13% on international flights compared to what you’d pay if you booked on a Friday.

How long before your trip should you book your flights?

Another key element to getting the best deal is booking with the right amount of time before your flight.

For domestic flights, the best deals are typically available around a month before departure, when fares are 24% cheaper than they are at the last minute. For international itineraries, 60 days prior to takeoff is the ideal booking window. Expedia found prices for international flights peak about four months before departure, and come down about 10% around the 60-day mark.

“We really recommend that 60-day window because that’s when you’re going to be able to save around 10% but you’re also going to be far enough out that you can get the right route and the seat you want on that airplane,” Hudson said.

She added that with those windows in mind, it’s a good time to start researching your fall and winter holiday travel.

What is the best day to fly?

Aside from the week of Thanksgiving when Wednesday is especially busy, middle-of-the-week flights tend to be the least expensive and the least crowded.

Expedia’s research found Thursdays are typically the cheapest, around 16% less expensive than Sundays, which is usually the most expensive day to depart.

“Book on a Sunday, leave on a Thursday, and make sure you lock in your plans around 28 days out,” Hudson said. “That should be your bible.”

What is the best time to fly?

Another major stressor for travelers, Expedia found, was flight delays and cancellations.

Hudson said to reduce the chances of issues with your flight, it’s best to travel early in the day.

“The tip there is you need to take a morning flight,” Hudson said. “Around a third of travelers try to avoid morning flights because the whole getting up early and getting to the airport thing stresses them out.” But, she added, Expedia’s research showed flights are less likely to get canceled if they’re scheduled to depart before 3 p.m.

On the plus side, Hudson added, the cancellation rate is improving compared to last year, even as episodes of poor airline reliability continue to generate headlines.

Flight canceled or delayed? Here's what you're owed.

How else can you reduce stress in air travel?

One other tip Hudson had was to take advantage of price protections when they’re available. These include things like Expedia’s Price Drop Protection and Google Flights’ price guarantee will both refund you the difference if airfare drops on eligible itineraries after you’ve purchased through the platform.

Here's why summer travel vacations will cost more this year

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: May 23, 2024 / 8:08 PM EDT / CBS News

Summer vacations, a big-ticket purchase for most Americans, will be even costlier this year despite airfares, rental car costs and other travel-related expenses dropping. The reason? Elevated prices on things like  checked bags , restaurants and recreational experiences.

While hotel prices are down 4%, airfares down 6% and rental car costs have dipped 10%, according to a  NerdWallet  survey, vacationing this summer will cost 15% more than it did before the pandemic. That's because airline extras like seat selection fees, as well as dining out and entertainment costs, are making a bigger dent on Americans' wallets.

"Inflation is no joke. Americans are feeling the impact," said CBS News senior transportation correspondent Kris Van Cleave. "What they're going to find when that bill comes, it's going to look a lot like it did last year, but there are some real pain points," he added.

One of those pain points is  airline baggage fees . "That could be $5 and then multiply that times two for your roundtrip, multiply that by four for your family of four, and you're seeing that the cost of travel does feel like it's going up even if individual prices are going down," Sally French, who tracks vacation inflation for NerdWallet, told CBS News.

Vacation activity costs, such as visiting amusement parks or other sites, have risen 3.4% since 2019, according to NerdWallet.

As far as eating out goes, restaurant dining is up nearly 30% compared with 2019. That could amount to a significant expense for vacationers, many of whom don't include food in their budget. "A lot of people won't budget restaurant prices when they're making that initial vacation plan," French said. "They're budgeting out the price of their hotel and airfare."

Indeed airfares can appear artificially low when only the base fare is advertised which doesn't take into account the cost of extras like choosing a seat.

Ways to save on summer travel

Despite inflation and concerns about the state of the economy weighing on Americans' psyches and wallets, roughly 70% still say they will take a trip this summer.

Van Cleave offers these tips for consumers looking to cut costs when taking trips.

  • It always pays to travel at off-peak times, when airfares tend to be cheaper. Over Memorial Day Weekend , for example, Saturday is a slower travel day compared with Thursday and Friday, which folks look to so they can get a head start on their long weekends.
  • Being flexible on where you travel can also help your wallet. Avoiding particularly popular or congested areas can lead to significant savings. "If you just want a beach, you maybe go to a less popular, less in-demand destination,"  Van Cleave suggests. "You get the sun, you get the sand, you get the surf and maybe you get a smaller bill."
  • Lastly, spend your travel rewards and credit card points as you accumulate them, as opposed to stockpiling them for some point in the future, when they may be worth less. "Use them as you get them to cut travel costs. The only guarantee with those points is they become less valuable as time goes on," Van Cleave said.

Megan Cerullo is a New York-based reporter for CBS MoneyWatch covering small business, workplace, health care, consumer spending and personal finance topics. She regularly appears on CBS News 24/7 to discuss her reporting.

How to find the best summer travel deals

Here are some ways to save while planning your next summer getaway, by ale zimmermann and leslie gaydos • published may 31, 2024 • updated on may 31, 2024 at 5:31 pm.

As the summer travel season heats up, many of are dreaming of a vacation getaway.

Finding a good deal can seem like a daunting task. But with a few smart strategies, you can save big on your next flight.

“We're seeing that airfare has renormalized,” said Katy Nastro, a travel expert at Going.com. “The average price of airfare year over year is down about 6%, and it's down about 15% from where we saw that absolute, very hot, sky-high prices in this summer of 2022.”

Nastro tells us there are a couple things travelers should keep in mind while planning their next summer getaway.

Get New England news, weather forecasts and entertainment stories to your inbox. Sign up for NECN newsletters.

“We always say let the deal decide the destination. You can fly again into places like Cancun for $261 round trip from Boston,” Nastro said.

On Going.com, travelers can explore possibilities. By hitting the “let us choose” button – users will be able to pull up airfare deals, show you when they’re available and give you a price history of the flight. Be flexible with travel dates. Airfares are cheaper mid-week and consider flying into or out of nearby airports.

“Being flexible on the airports or cities that you're flying into can afford you some affordability when it comes to overall flight price,” Nastro said.

Consider using fare comparison websites like Google Flights or Skyscanner, which allows users to compare prices across multiple airlines and set up price alerts to monitor fare changes. On Skyscanner, users can choose “explore everywhere” as the destination and flexible dates to find the best deals.

“Often you can fly into a destination and then take a budget flight to get to your intended destination overall,” explained Nastro. “We call this the Greek islands trick, and it is especially beneficial for looking at those pricey flights over to Europe.”

Nastro also recommends mixing and matching airlines: “Don't just hyper focus on searching for round trips. Also, do your search two one ways and often flying in on one carrier and then out on another can help you save.”

And don’t forget about airline loyalty programs.

“If you do have a stash of points and miles, this is a really great time period to consider [using] even for one leg of your flight or one part of your itinerary. When cash prices are really high, you often get the best return on value in terms of using your points and miles,” said Nastro.

Here’s a lesser-known travel hack: clear a browser’s cookies when searching for flights. Airlines can sometimes track searches and can increase prices based on browsing history.

The 10 best places to visit in December

Jordi Lippe-McGraw

In December, the world transforms. The Northern Hemisphere sees winter's touch with snow and chill, while the Southern Hemisphere basks in summer's warmth.

Travelers can choose anything from snow-capped landscapes ideal for winter sports to sunlit beaches for relaxation. As the year-end approaches, many places come alive with holiday preparations, each offering unique cultural experiences.

Whether it's the allure of festive markets , the thrill of outdoor adventures, or simply exploring new terrains, December provides something for every traveler.

But where should you go? Here are the 10 best destinations to visit in December.

Breckenridge, Colorado

Imagine a place where the winter comes alive — that's Breckenridge in December. Picture world-class ski slopes, cozy family sleigh rides and thrilling snowmobile adventures. Not to mention, the history here is captivating. December's Ullr Fest is also a special treat for travelers. The festival is a local favorite held in honor of Ullr, the Norse god of snow. (We're hoping he blesses us with plenty of powder.)

There's also plenty to explore in nearby towns like Frisco and Leadville; less than an hour away, you can take a rejuvenating dip at Indian Hot Springs. Or, weather permitting, head to Rocky Mountain National Park to marvel at its natural beauty.

TPG tip : Hyatt Vacation Club at The Ranahan offers a spectacular Rocky Mountain retreat with premium skiing, winter escapades, boating, mountain biking and year-round family-friendly outdoor activities. It's available for about $205 in December, or 21,000 World of Hyatt Points per night.

Beyond winter sports, the stunning beauty of nearby Lake Tahoe is a must-see.

If you love the outdoors, you'll be in your element. Morristown's desert beauty is a big draw, with opportunities to go hiking or 4x4 riding.

At night, the town's clear December skies, away from bright city glows, offer some top-notch stargazing.
