The heritage arc, uttar pradesh tourism.

Embedded in the heart of India is Uttar Pradesh, a land where cultures have evolved and religions have emerged. The greatness of Uttar Pradesh lies not only in this confluence but also in the emegence of cultural and religious traditions along some of the greatest rivers in the Indian subcontinent, the Ganga and the Yamuna. Through history, great cities have emerged and been established along great rivers. Within India, the Ganga and the Yamuna have nurtured a culture because of which religious faith, rituals, culture, and intellectual enlightenment have evolved in places along the two rivers.

WEATHER ALERT

5 warnings and 3 advisories in effect for 18 regions in the area

Reasons why you should not move to houston ... no. 1, we are full.

Brittany Taylor , Senior Digital Content Producer

HOUSTON – There are so many reasons to move to Houston, such as the cost of living, the atmosphere, the food, jobs, low taxes, diversity, homes, tech and so much more on that long list -- but we are full, signed a frustrated Houstonian.

  • Study says Houston has one of the lowest inflation problems, but do our pockets beg to differ?

So, here’s a couple of reasons to stop some of these out-of-towners from getting the idea that it is better to move down South, adding to Houston area traffic and up ticking the cost of living.

  • Who’s about to lose their job in Houston? Understanding the WARN Act

I was born and raised in Houston my entire life. So, I LOVE my city -- and I can see why so many others love it here as well. But the amount of people moving to Texas, well ... is causing some problems. Don’t get me wrong, we have southern hospitality, but the cost of living is going up each year, traffic has gotten worse, crime is going up and the hospitality is going down.

  • Houston named 4th most diverse city in America - in case you didn’t know 😉

My top warning signs if you’re considering a move to Houston:

1. hurricane season/extreme weather ⛈️.

Recently, the Houston area experienced a derecho and a few tornados, which shocked many people not from the Bayou City.

Oh, how can we forget the heat! ☀️ It gets HOT in Houston! With the combination of the humidity and high temps, we reached triple-digits in 2023. And we’re baking under a heat umbrella right now and it’s not even summer (officially!)

  • 2023: Hands down, hottest ever

2. Humidity 🌡️

If you thought for one second that your flat iron hairstyle will last through the summer, fall or winter -- think again. Because Houston sits in a subtropical climate zone, we are caught between hot and moist air from the tropics and cooler air from the north.

So you may walk outside with one hairstyle and by the end of the day, your hair may be several inches raised. Don’t forget about the oily skin.

3. Bug season 🦟

Mosquito season will bug you out! Because of the temperatures, humidity and standing water from the wet weather patterns, Houston is experiencing an above average number of bugs.

Cockroaches also love the humidity, which makes a perfect environment for them to live in the South.

4. Traffic 🚥

If you haven’t noticed, on top on construction and car accidents, traffic jams are a nuisance for us all! I mean, are we turning into Los Angeles?

According to the City of Houston , the Department of Justice declared the city one of the most intense trafficking jurisdictions in the country.

Factors that contribute to this include: Proximity to the U.S.-Mexico border; Major international airport, seaport, and interstate roadways (I-10, US-59); Constantly expanding population; Diverse labor sector; Large sex industry (with limited regulations); Popular destination for runaways.

8. We are ‘uptight’ ⏰

A new report looked at some of the most laidback cities in the U.S. and no Texas cities made the list. Instead, three Texas cities were named among “uptight” or “formal.”

  • Houston named most uptight city in the US—what is THAT supposed to mean?!

The study was shared by researchers at FinanceBuzz who looked at several factors including well-being, economic factors, livability, and leisure activities. For some reason, Houston was on the very bottom of that list.

9. The coffee scene needs some work ☕

A national study ranks Houston as the worst coffee city in the U.S.

Clever, a real-estate website, analyzed the top 15 best coffee cities in the U.S. and the 10 worst coffee cities. Houston was ranked No. 1 worst coffee city.

  • Say what?! ☕ This national study ranked Houston as the worst coffee city in the US

“The reasons behind this drop are evident. Houston is home to just 4.9 coffee shops per 100,000 residents — a stark contrast to the average city’s 12.6. This represents a 61% shortfall in coffee shops compared to the average city,” the study read.

Clever compared the 50 most populous U.S. metro cities across several metrics: the number of coffee shops per 100,000 residents, number of coffee roasters per 100,000 residents, and Google Trends popularity. Sources such as the latest U.S. Census data and the U.S. Bureau for Economic Analysis were also used

I’m sure there are more reasons why Houston is not the “dreamland” others may have tried to paint for you on social media. Now, we are OK with visitations from time to time, but hopefully this article has convinced you to stray from moving to Houston -- maybe try Dallas or San Antonio? 😝

Three innovations to solve hotel staffing shortages

During the COVID-19 closures, hotel staff around the world were faced with the precarious prospect of staying home. For instance, in the United States, 70 percent of hotel staff were furloughed or laid off. 1 “AHLA data shows 70 percent of hotel employees laid off or furloughed,” TSNN, May 4, 2020. Many hospitality workers reevaluated their career paths and work-life balance as they braved the pandemic—since then, these labor pools have shed their concierge badges and room service trolleys for jobs that offer more flexibility or higher pay, such as retail, e-commerce, or warehousing.

Hotels are now battling to restore their staff complement to pre-pandemic levels. A recent survey of 200 hotels conducted by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) revealed that 87 percent of hotels in the United States do not have enough staff, and 36 percent of the respondents cited severe staff shortages. For 43 percent of hotels, housekeeping roles were singled out as being the most seriously understaffed. AHLA points out that similar staff shortages extend to hotels across the United States as employment in the hotel industry decreased by almost 400,000 jobs between February 2020 and August 2022, with more than 115,000 job openings yet unfilled. 2 “87% of surveyed hotels report staffing shortages,” American Hotel & Lodging Association, October 3, 2022.

Nevertheless, travelers are returning in full force , leaving hotels with no choice but to operate at pre-pandemic occupancy with fewer staff members. The staff shortage may provide an opportunity for hotels to reframe the problem, and think creatively about roles and staffing.

This article highlights the value of adopting a flexible and agile staffing model that aligns with dynamic demand. This approach is marked by three innovations that could improve operational effectiveness and employee job satisfaction, without compromising service quality.

While the article presents success stories and positive outcomes as a result of implementing these innovations, it comes with a caveat that staffing remains a complex issue and the human element should not be glossed over. In a time of staff shortages, employee satisfaction (and therefore retention) is more important than ever.

Would you like to learn more about our Travel, Logistics & Infrastructure Practice ?

Innovation 1: using standardized, activity-based metrics to forecast frontline coverage needs.

Many hotels and resorts base their staffing on average weekly occupancy. This does not, however, reflect real need, as occupancy often fluctuates from day to day and week to week. And averages, by nature, flatten out peaks and troughs.

Take the example of a golf resort: When comparing average occupancy to actual occupancy, it is clear that weekly average numbers do not adequately reflect peak days or account for fluctuations day to day or week to week (Exhibit 1).

One solution could be to expand overall occupancy metrics to include specific measurements, like number of check-ins and check-outs, or number of tables seated at the hotel restaurant. Leveraging these metrics to match staffing to daily need (or even hourly need) enables hotels to define a standard set of productivity metrics for each type of role, which can be applied consistently as demand fluctuates.

A hotel could, for example, optimize staffing by assigning one room attendant for every 15 check-outs. Cleaning and laundry could also be scheduled to serve only the forecast number of check-outs per day. Where management ownership is shared across properties, further coverage can be achieved by standardizing activity-based metrics across all properties.

One hotel shifted from using weekly averages to staffing according to peaks in occupancy. By scheduling an additional front-desk employee for hours with high check-out volumes, this innovation reduced the total labor hours needed by about 10 percent. This also created better work-life balance for front-desk staff. One front-desk employee had previously left the industry to meet her childcare needs. She later returned to her position at the hotel because she could now work the new part-time shift during peak check-out periods. This freed up time for her to complete her work day, and still be home by the time her children returned from school.

Innovation 2: Redesigning roles to combine jobs

Traditional hotel staffing involves distinct roles with clear divisions between managers and frontline employees. And each discipline—such as housekeeping, front-desk, and maintenance—has separate promotion paths.

To build resilience in times of staff shortages, hotels could redesign roles so that fewer people are needed to perform the same number of tasks. This could involve combining similar roles, or cross-training staff so that they can switch roles.

For instance, when combining roles, housekeeping management could be combined with front-desk management to form a single set of duties. Hotels could also introduce a player-coach model where one role involves supervising and performing work, such as a housekeeping supervisor who manages a team and cleans rooms.

Staff can also cover multiple roles as needed. Night-shift roles could be transformed by combining low-touch housekeeping duties with front-desk coverage during quieter times.

Redesigned roles could potentially improve employee satisfaction by empowering staff to explore new career paths within the hotel’s operations. Combined roles build skills across disciplines—for example, supporting a housekeeper to train and become proficient in some maintenance areas, or a front-desk associate to build managerial skills.

Hotel employees at the front desk.

How to ‘ACE’ hospitality recruitment

Innovation 3: creating job networks across properties.

Where management or ownership is shared across properties, roles may be staffed to cover a network of sites, rather than individual hotels—especially where a hotel group may already have centralized administration for functions such as legal, accounting, and human resources.

This approach could be effective for various roles including office support, frontline staff, specialized positions, and management. In specialized roles such as maintenance, security, or events planning, a single person covering multiple properties can create value as needed. Activities staff, for instance for kids’ clubs, could also be shared. Frontline roles could be networked across properties, without sacrificing customer service. For example, a concierge or front-desk employee could alternate shifts between two nearby locations, or two different types of properties with different needs. A resort may need check-out staff later in the day whereas a hotel that caters to business travelers would need more staff in the mornings. Managers could be pooled to lead two smaller teams at two properties, instead of being focused on one.

Combining innovations to elevate operations

Though each intervention could alleviate some of the post-pandemic staff shortage issues, a combination of all three innovations could bring about a considerable reduction in weekly staff hours for a hotel property.

To illustrate, at one resort, weekly hours could be reduced by up to 18 percent by applying these three staffing innovations, specifically to front-desk and housekeeping roles. In this instance, using hourly demand to plan for staff coverage could have the greatest impact (Exhibit 2).

In many cases, employee engagement and retention have increased at hotels where all three measures have been adopted. For example, a property group under shared ownership adopted all three measures during the past two years which led to new ways for employees to grow and develop. A housekeeper who never imagined himself in a managerial role is now a shift supervisor, and employees who learned English while in back-of-house roles have embarked on training to pick up new front-of-house shifts.

These successes bode well for understaffed hotels, as McKinsey’s 2020 Employee Experience survey shows that employees who report having a positive experience at work are 16 times more engaged, and are eight times more likely to remain with their employer, than employees who report a negative experience.

Accordingly, hotel owners could make efforts to engage employees when it comes to staffing innovation by exploring, testing, and experimenting to find what works best for their employees as well as for their business needs and operating environment.

While these three innovations, alone or in combination, can lead to operational improvements, they may be easier to implement at some types of hotels than others. For instance, resorts may find it easier to provide employees with new career paths, cross-train staff, or combine similar roles. Hotel-chain operators may find it easier to share roles across locations. Many smaller, limited-service hotels have already implemented job sharing, so this particular innovation may not offer much value. Hotel owners may need to assess what would likely work best for them and their particular business model and context.

As hotel occupancy continues to recover post-pandemic, hotels have the opportunity to think innovatively about staffing. By adopting a more flexible staffing model based on dynamic demand, hotels can deliver pre-pandemic levels of service even if they are short staffed. Of course, the key to implementing any staffing innovation successfully is to keep an eye on employee engagement, and ensure that any change is good for people, and the business.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The friend of a prominent Congolese opposition leader’s son said he turned down a six-figure offer to travel there from the U.S. as part of the family’s security detail in what turned out to be a failed coup attempt.

Marcel Malanga, the 21-year-old son of eccentric coup leader Christian Malanga, was detained by Congolese forces Sunday morning, along with a former classmate from their hometown of West Jordan, Utah, after his father was killed in a shootout while resisting arrest. His high school football teammate, Tyler Thompson , 21, was one of two other Americans arrested after an ill-fated attack on the presidential palace in Kinshasa.

Six people were dead and dozens arrested, including the three Americans, following that attack and another on the residence of a close ally of President Felix Tshisekedi , the Congolese army spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Sylvain Ekenge, said.

Daniel Gonzalez, a former teammate of the two Utah residents caught up in the foiled coup, told The Associated Press that Marcel had offered him $50,000 to $100,000 to spend four months in Congo as a security guard for his politician father. The 22-year-old FedEx worker strongly considered it, but said it lacked concrete details. He ultimately declined so he could spend the summer with his girlfriend.

“I feel really sad for Tyler and Marcel but, at the end of the day, I can just be grateful that I didn’t go because I would be stuck in the same scary situation,” Gonzalez said.

Marcel’s lucrative offer to Gonzalez sheds light on how he might have enticed Thompson to come along on what his stepmother, Miranda, said was supposed to be a vacation.

It was one of many propositions the coup leader’s American son made to former football teammates in what many described as a desperate effort to bring someone with him to Congo. He pitched the trip to some as a family vacation and still to others as a service trip to build wells in drought-stricken communities.

Although it’s unclear whether Thompson was offered money, multiple teammates told the AP that he had alluded to such incentives, telling one friend that the trip could be a “big financial opportunity.”

Thompson’s family insists he’s a political pawn who was dragged into an international conflict under false pretenses. They’ve had no direct communication with their son since the coup and are worried for his safety, his stepmother said.

Marcel’s mother, Brittney Sawyer, said her son is innocent and had followed his father.

Christian Malanga, the slain leader of the Congolese opposition political party, considered himself president of a shadow government in exile, which he called the “New Zaire.” He described himself on his website as a refugee who settled in Salt Lake City with his family in the 1990s, pursuing business opportunities in gold mining and used car sales before eventually moving back to Congo to fight for political reforms.

While campaigning for the Congolese Parliament, he claimed he was jailed and endured torturous beatings. He later published a manifesto detailing plans to reform Congo’s security services and described his movement as an effort to organize fellow emigres against the “current Congolese dictatorship government regime.”

“Marcel was pretty secretive about his dad. He didn’t even know him well until he spent last summer in Africa,” Gonzalez said. “There’s no way Marcel had any idea what he’d be getting us into or he never would’ve offered. He’s one of the best friends a person could have.”

In the early hours Sunday, Christian Malanga began livestreaming video on social media from inside the palace. He is seen with his armed son, who hastily pulls a neck gaiter over his face, looking around wide-eyed. Congo officials have not commented on how the attackers were able to get inside.

Gonzalez, of Herriman, Utah, said he had communicated with Marcel about the financial offer over Snapchat, in messages that have since disappeared, in the months leading up to the coup attempt. He was shocked to learn how the trip played out.

Marcel had told Gonzalez that his father was letting him hire a friend so he would have company during his summer abroad. He seemed excited to be able to offer such a substantial amount of money to a close friend who needed it, Gonzalez explained.

The Malangas had promised on-the-job training, full coverage of travel expenses and the chance to explore a new part of the world while making an income, he said. Marcel insisted repeatedly that it was safe, but didn’t share details about his father’s background.

Neither Gonzalez nor his mother thought the trip would be unsafe, he said, despite the U.S. State Department strongly discouraging travel to Congo — but he turned it down when his girlfriend asked him not to leave for four months.

He later saw private Snapchat videos filmed by Marcel that showed Thompson looking frightened as armed Congolese soldiers surrounded their vehicle. In Gonzalez’s final Snapchat exchange with his friend before their capture, he asked whether Thompson was OK and urged them to stay safe.

Marcel assured him that they were.

Other former football teammates, including Luke Barbee and Jaden Lalor, had heard different pitches about the trip and wondered why Marcel seemed so desperate to bring someone along. Neither could fathom their friends’ possible involvement in a violent attack.

“I consider Marcel a brother to me and Tyler a friend, and I truly believe Marcel’s father must have pressured them for his own wants,” Lalor said. “I just want them back safely.”

United Airlines is still hiring, but it's not adding workers as fast as it did the last 2 years

United Airlines expects to hire nearly 10,000 workers this year as U.S. air travel continues to grow

United Airlines officials say they expect to hire nearly 10,000 workers this year as U.S. air travel continues to grow, but the pace of hiring will be slower than in the previous two years partly because of delays in getting new planes from Boeing.

The airline will resume hiring pilots in July after it canceled pilot classes for May and June, Kate Gebo, United’s executive vice president of human resources, said Tuesday.

United discussed its hiring plans on the day that the government reported that U.S. job openings fell in April to the lowest level since 2021. The job market remains strong, however, despite high interest rates and signs that the economy is slowing.

Boeing has slowed production and deliveries of new planes since a door plug blew out of a Boeing 737 Max 9 during an Alaska Airlines flight in January, leaving United and other carriers with fewer new jets than they expected.

Gebo said United would have hired another 3,000 to 5,000 people this year if it had received all the Boeing jets it expected. The airline said it hired 16,000 people last year.

Gebo said the Chicago-based airline has received 260,000 job applications this year, including more than 40,000 applications for 300 internships.

United officials said they expect to hire 2,300 people this year in Chicago, 1,500 around its hub in Newark, New Jersey, about 1,300 in San Francisco and 900 in Houston.

The company did not immediately give a figure for how many people will leave the airline. Gebo said most of the 10,000 new jobs represent growth at the airline, but an undisclosed number will offset attrition, which she said is 5% to 7% in a normal year.

United officials said it needs the extra staffing to keep up with travel demand.

So far this year, the number of travelers at U.S. airport checkpoints is up about 6% compared with last year, according to Transportation Security Administration figures . The TSA recorded a single-day record on the Friday before Memorial Day and expects that mark to be broken several times over the summer.
