Best Tourist Sim Cards in Albania in 2024

one albania tourist sim

As a traveler exploring Albania, obtaining a sim card is essential to stay connected. With internet access on hand, navigating through new cities becomes effortless. Whether you’re seeking the best restaurants, searching for directions to your accommodation, booking a taxi, or sharing photos with your loved ones, having on-the-go internet makes the entire journey smoother.

While roaming is an option, the charges pile up quickly, especially for international travelers. Hence, we strongly suggest purchasing an eSIM or a local sim card to benefit from the local phone rates. The good news is, getting your hands on either of these in Albania is a breeze, but knowing which one to choose can make all the difference.

This guide offers everything you need to know about purchasing a sim card in Albania, including updated prices and the ultimate sim card guaranteed to meet your needs.

Table of Contents

Best sim card in albania for tourists.

If you are only visiting Albania then we would recommend the eSim offered by Airalo as the best sim card in Albania. For roughly the same price as a local sim card you can save the hassle of having to visit a store and wait for the card to be activated (this took us about an hour in total).

If you are planning to visit Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina and / or Serbia then we recommend purchasing a sim card from Vodafone. The Vodafone sim card here offers free roaming in the above countries which will save you the effort and cost of purchasing additional sim cards when you arrive there.

Similarly, if your phone does not support eSims (these days most phones do, including all iPhones since 2018), then we would again recommend purchasing a local sim card from a Vodafone store near your hotel.

Albania Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Albania costs between 1,500 and 1,800 LEK in June 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Albania will cost between $4.50 USD and $26 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Albania which includes 3GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $11 USD.

How to Get a Sim Card in Albania

Identify mobile providers: Vodafone, One Albania and are your best options in Albania.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Albania

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Albania at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Albania then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Albania have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Vodafone, One Albania and . Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Albania are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Albania with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

Albania eSim

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Albania. The Airalo Albania eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

In order to get set up with an Airalo eSim , all you need to do is visit Airalo here and purchase the eSim online (the $11 USD plan is suitable for most travellers). Once you’ve purchased the sim card Airalo will email you instructions and a QR code. Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Albania without having to venture outside.

Airalo Albania

Our preferred eSim provider in Albania is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Albania and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Albania eSim uses the Vodafone to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Vodafonenetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Albania.

Here are the plans and prices for Airalo’s Albania eSim:

1GB data valid for 7 days – Price: $4.50 USD 2GB data valid for 15 days – Price: $8 USD 3GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $11 USD 5GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $15.50 USD 10GB data valid for 30 days – Price: $26 USD

For most travellers we recommend the 3GB data plan for $11 USD which is valid for 30 days. Some travellers may prefer a larger plan, whilst travellers visiting for just a couple of days may be fine with a smaller plan.

Holafly Albania

An alternative eSim provider we can recommend is Holafly.

Holafly’s eSim is a suitable option for travellers who require large amounts of data, such as digital nomads and people who work online while they travel. All of Holafly’s Albania eSims offer unlimited data.

Holafly’s Albania eSim uses the Vodafonenetwork to provide data and connect users to the internet. This network will provide reliable speeds and coverage while in Albania

What is an eSim?

An eSIM, also known as an embedded SIM card, is a digital SIM card that is already incorporated into a device, like a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch. It eliminates the need for a physical SIM card to be inserted into or removed from the device.

Unlike traditional SIM cards, the eSIM is integrated into the hardware of the device and can be remotely activated and programmed by a mobile network operator. This enables users to switch between various mobile networks or plans without having to physically change SIM cards.

The convenience, flexibility, and user-friendliness of eSIM technology are especially advantageous for travelers or individuals who frequently switch between different mobile networks or travel internationally. It eliminates the need to buy and insert physical SIM cards, making it much easier to manage multiple mobile connections on a single device.

To activate an eSIM, users can either scan a QR code provided by their mobile network operator or manually enter the activation details. Once activated, the device can connect to the desired mobile network and enjoy voice calls, data usage, and messaging services just like with a typical SIM card.

Why Use an eSim?

Using an eSIM can be beneficial for various reasons, including:

– Convenience: No need to physically insert or remove a SIM card when switching networks or plans, making it ideal for frequent travelers. – Dual SIM functionality: Allows for having two active mobile numbers on one device, helpful for separating personal and work numbers or managing multiple phone lines. – Space-saving: Since eSIMs are embedded, it eliminates the need for a physical SIM card slot, freeing up space for smaller devices or additional components. – Remote provisioning: Activation and management of mobile plans can be done remotely without a physical SIM card or visiting a store, providing flexibility and convenience. – Future-proofing: With more networks and providers offering eSIM support, using an eSIM-compatible device ensures access to new services and offerings in the future.

In conclusion, eSIM technology offers flexibility, convenience, and future-proofing for mobile connectivity.

eSim Supported Phones

eSIM technology is becoming increasingly popular and is supported by a growing number of smartphones and other devices. Here are some examples of eSIM-compatible phones:

Apple iPhone series (iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, etc.): Apple was one of the early adopters of eSIM technology and offers support for eSIM on various iPhone models.

Google Pixel series (Pixel 3, Pixel 4, Pixel 5, etc.): Google’s Pixel smartphones also support eSIM functionality, allowing users to activate and use eSIMs.

Samsung Galaxy series (Galaxy S22, Galaxy Note 20, etc.): Many of Samsung’s flagship devices now come with eSIM support, enabling users to utilize eSIM technology.

OnePlus devices (OnePlus 7, OnePlus 8, etc.): OnePlus has included eSIM support in some of its smartphone models, offering users the flexibility of using eSIMs.

Motorola Razr (2020): The latest iteration of the iconic Motorola Razr features eSIM compatibility, enabling users to use eSIMs for cellular connectivity.

These are just a few examples, and the list of eSIM-compatible phones continues to expand as more manufacturers embrace this technology. There’s a very strong chance your phone supports eSims so if you’re unsure we recommend looking it up on our list of eSim supported phones .

How to Use an eSim

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Activate the eSIM: Your eSim provider will send you instructions to activate the sim. This will usually involve scanning a QR code, entering an activation code, or downloading the eSIM profile directly onto your device.

Set up the eSIM: Once activated, your device will guide you through the eSIM setup process. This typically involves selecting the eSIM as your preferred mobile plan, configuring settings like data roaming, and entering any necessary authentication details.

Enjoy the Connection: Once the eSIM is set up, you can use it as you would with a physical SIM card. Make calls, send messages, browse the internet, and use data services as needed. You can also switch between eSIM profiles if you have multiple eSIMs installed on your device.

Albania SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 23, 2024 | Europe , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Albania soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing an Albania SIM card .

This guide will explain where to buy a SIM card in Albania in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Albania. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call an Uber, or translate Albanian – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Albania.

Note that your mobile phone provider may already offer Albania coverage if you’re European. If that’s the case, you won’t need a SIM card for your adventures in Albania.

Gjirokaster Albania

Best SIM Cards In Albania

If you’re traveling in Albania, we recommend using a SIM card from Vodafone, One, ALBtelecom, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Albania

You can either buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind.

And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival.

So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Vodafone, One, and ALBtelecom.

Ionian sea coast, Albania

Vodafone Albania SIM Cards

Vodafone offers several different types of plans:

  • 300 MB, valid for 3 days for ALL 300 ($2.66)
  • 1.5 GB, valid for 10 days for ALL 700 ($6.20)
  •  5 GB, valid for 30 days for ALL 1500 ($13.29)
  •  Unlimited data, valid for 30 days for ALL 2000 ($17.73)

One SIM Cards

One has one tourist plan available, which includes the following:

  • 35 GB, valid for 21 days for ALL 2000 ($17.73)

ALBtelecom SIM Cards

ALBtelecom offers three different types of plans:

  • 8 GB, valid for 30 days for ALL 1100 ($9.75)
  • 24 GB, valid for 30 days for ALL 1300 ($11.52)
  • 36 GB, valid for 30 days for ALL 1900 ($16.84)

Overall, we think Vodafone is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy An Albania Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, OneSimCard works in more than 100+ countries and gives you data for $0.01 per MB. Albania is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid European SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offers 1 package that covers Albania.

  • 5 GB, valid for 14 days for $49.90

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Europe.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Albania

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone.

If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Albania.

Curious? Learn more about eSIM for travelers on esimroamers.com .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo .

Airalo Albania

If you want to buy an eSIM for Albania, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Europe and Albania.

I’ve been using Airalo in Europe for several months, and it works fine.

Here are the options available :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $4.50
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $8
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $11
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $15.50
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $26

airalo albania esim

Here’s an overview of the options available in Europe :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $20
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $37
  • 50 GB, valid for 90 days for $100
  • 100 GB, valid for 180 days for $185

The options mentioned above are part of Eurolink and offer coverage in 39 countries, including Albania.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 124 countries, including Albania.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $17
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 60 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 180 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 365 days for $69

Airalo Discover esim global

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country. Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip.

In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Go to Airalo

Holafly Albania

Alternatively, you could look at your options on Holafly . You can read our Holafly review to learn more about this eSIM store.

I’ve also tried this eSIM provider in Europe, and it worked fine. They offer the following plans in Albania:

  • Unlimited data, valid for 5 days for $27
  • Unlimited data, valid for 7 days for $34
  • Unlimited data, valid for 10 days for $37
  • Unlimited data, valid for 15 days for $47
  • Unlimited data, valid for 20 days for $54

Nomad Albania

Finally, Nomad is also a great eSIM provider. Here’s an overview of the plans available for Albania:

  • 1GB, valid for 7 days for $20
  • 3GB, valid for 30 days for $48
  • 5GB, valid for 30 days for $54

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Albania

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Albania or even an eSIM for your travels in Albania is pretty easy.

You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Europe without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a European SIM card .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Albania if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card.

Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Best tourist sim card to buy in Albania

Updated: Apr 29

Being a digital nomad/full-time traveller can involve a lot of mundane tasks. One of these is getting a new sim card in a new country. I am now firmly on the e-sim train when I need data in a new country, and you can read my thoughts on this at the end of the article (I also have a discount code available for you lovely people to use).

I still have a mobile contract back in the UK, which allows me free data in a number of countries, but very often, I need to buy a local sim card so I can get online, as only certain countries are covered. I went to Albania twice in 2022, and in my experience, this is the best sim card to get as a tourist in this Balkan country.

Vodafone Tourist Sim Card

This is one of the better sim cards I’ve had on my travels so far, and costs 2000 lek to purchase. As of October 2022, this is roughly around 17 US dollars, 17 Euros, or 15 British pounds. 2000 lek’s gets you 35gb of data, as well as unlimited national minutes and texts. A lot of bang for your lek.

The internet is overall pretty strong in Albania, but WiFi is a bit hit and miss at times, at least in my experience, and it is great to have a reliable back-up.

One thing to be wary of, the sim card is only active for 21 days. I was in Albania for just over a month, meaning I had to get a top up, so if you’re planning a longer stay, keep this in mind. I’d buy it again regardless of the duration of my stay, as I think I almost always had signal, and while I never normally have to ring a local number, it is sometimes handy (taxi’s, food delivery etc).

For stays below 21 days, I’d still 100% recommend this sim card, and there are also week options available, but for me, this was the best value sim cards I have seen in Albania.

Regarding the top up, it was an incredibly easy process. I simply went to a Vodafone shop, with my existing sim card details, and they were able to do it over the internet, rather than having to give me a new sim card.

Front of a Vodafone tourist sim cover in Albania

As is normally the case when getting a sim away from your home country, make sure you have your passport while purchasing, as they normally always need it. Having your local address can also make things easier for you.

Rating: 5/5 – As mentioned, for the price, and the sheer amount of data, this is one of the best sim cards I have bought on my travels. Only downside is the 21-day limit, but top-up is easy, and the cheap price makes it worth it. Signal was strong, and websites and videos loaded fast. The Vodafone sim card should be your choice when visiting Albania.

Note: This is an independent review. I appreciate it seems like I have a bit too much love for all things Vodafone, but it was just genuinely, a very good tourist sim card.

I am now firmly on the eSIM craze, after using it for the first time ahead of a trip to Turkey, so I wanted to share it as an option here, just in case you weren't aware of how easy/awesome they are.

I used the Airalo app, and downloaded it before I flew to Turkey. I had purchased the Turkey eSIM before I'd even flown, as I was arriving in the country late, so wanted to make sure I was covered. It's incredibly easy to buy the eSIM, and I was impressed with the competitive rate.

Most newer phone models are equipped with eSIM's, and Airalo provide detailed instructions on how to add the e-sim card to your phone. ESIM's will absolutely be the method I go down now, at least until I have the opportunity to shop around in the place I am visiting, and potentially get a new one.

The app is detailed and lets you know how much data you have left. This was my first time using an eSIM, and as mentioned, count me converted. This is way easier/cheaper than buying a sim-card at the airport, and this is what I recommend you do ahead of your flight to Turkey, or anywhere else. I think this is the most stressfree way to go about things, and it's a great feeling knowing you'll have data when you land.

It's also great as a top-up for a few days on a trip. Say if your original sim card data has run out, instead of buying a new simcard, or having to top up, an eSIM allows you to top up just a couple of GB for dirt cheap, and you'll be covered until the end of your trip. I like this option.

If you want to try it out, then why not use my code, and get $3 off your first eSIM purchase with Airalo! A 1GB eSIM with this code would only cost you $1.50, or a 2GB eSIM would cost just $5, and you'll be covered as soon as you land, and this will definitely help you on your way to your next stop.

Sign up here   ( referral code should populate automatically) ,  or use the code DAVID8186 at checkout, and you'll get the $3 off your first eSIM purchase!

If you have any questions on the eSIM, just leave a comment!

Thank you, Brandon! As I wrote in the post, definitely one of the best travel sim cards I have encountered on my travels, and even though I am a fan of Airalo, there are places where it doesn't make sense. As always, I like to use an e-sim when I land, to make sure I am covered, but absolutely use a local one when you're settled in Tirana/Albania.

thanks for the information. do you know if once the vodafone sim expires, you can top it up say the following year next time you return to albania?

also, is the airport wifi good enough to order a taxi via whatsapp or app, as i do not want to purchase a sim in the airport. cheers

Hi Seaview! Thanks for the comment. Excuse my delay, the website has been getting an update over the last few weeks. I actually don't know, it's a good question! I was in Albania a couple of months, and I used the same sim card every time, and topped it off without issue. Not sure if it would last until the following year, as sometimes the phone companies will turn them off, but definitely worth asking the phone shop in Albania when you're next there. Regarding the airport, I think Tirana's WiFi is pretty good. So hopefully you can do what you need to whilst there. I like to do the same when I get to an airport, as I am a…

Hi did you buy this sim in Albania or before you left?

Hi, Sarah! So I bought this one actually in Albania. There are loads of places available selling them, and it was easy to find/install. This was before I came across eSIM's which I tend to use now for at least the first few days I arrive at a place, so I at least have coverage when I land, then I can find the best deal. A 2GB esim is currently $8 on Airalo, which is the provider I use, and you can get $3 off that using the code I provide in the article. I think it would be cheaper to get a sim when you're in Albania, but this would cover you when you landed. If you have any…

Buying a SIM card in Albania

If you’re planning a trip to Albania and want to stay connected while exploring this beautiful Balkan gem, you’re in the right place.

We’re here to help you find the best SIM card for your trip to Albania .

In this guide, we will cover the main options available for tourists from local providers and from digital SIM cards – which you will see, can be incredibly handy!

Having a local SIM card for your trip to Albania can be a lifesaver , especially if you will be doing a road trip through the country.

RECOMMENDED

Need an esim.

If you’re short on time, check the options from our most recommended providers for mobile internet around the world: Airalo and Nomad.

Mobile operators in Albania

Albania currently has 2 active mobile providers , both offering prepaid SIM card options for tourists. They are:

  • Vodafone Albania
  • One Telecom Albania

Until 2023, there used to be a third mobile provider called ALB Telecom but they were bought and merged with One. Their plans have not been active since last year.

Prices of prepaid SIM cards in Albania

Vodafone prepaid sim cards for tourists in albania.

Vodafone is the number one mobile provider when it comes to SIM cards for tourists in Albania. Before the trip, we had read many different blogs and forums online and this was by far the most recommended option.

It is very easy to understand why. Vodafone Albania has many different prepaid SIM card options with very attractive pricing for tourists. Here is a summary of the options currently available:

My favorite thing about the Vodafone tourist SIM cards in Albania is how easy it is to get them . Vodafone stores are available all over Tirana so you can drop by and buy your SIM card as soon as you arrive.

I think they are a great option for tourists staying a short time in the country. If you need more information, check their website .

One Telecom Albania prepaid SIM card options

One Telecom also offers good options of prepaid SIM cards for tourists.

As you can see below, they have the same prices as Vodafone but they offer fewer options – which means they are a good alternative if you will need a significant amount of data for your trip.

SIM card options offered by One Telecom Albania:

If you need more information, check out their website .

Where to buy a SIM card in Albania

You can buy a SIM card in Albania at the stores from mobile providers .

It is quite easy to find Vodafone and One Telecom stores in Tirana. You can use the Vodafone store locator to find the shop closest to you.

Can you buy a SIM card at Tirana International Airport?

You can buy a Vodafone SIM card at Tirana Airport. There is a small Vodafone shop located at the Arrivals Hall.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to buy One SIM card at Tirana International Airport at this moment. It is quite easy to find a store within the city center, but not at the airport. This is quite a pity in my opinion; I hope they change this soon!

Our recommended SIM card

Between the local options available, we recommend the prepaid SIM card offered by Vodafone .

Even though both mobile providers have the exact same price for offers of 40 GB or more, I like the fact that Vodafone offer also smaller packages which are more than sufficient for small trips to the country.

Another reason why I recommend Vodafone is that it is easier to buy their SIM cards. Most tourists arrive in Tirana and you can easily buy the Vodafone tourist SIM card directly at the airport.

However, if you will be traveling to multiple countries, I would consider buying an eSIM instead. Continue reading to understand why.

Buying a SIM card in Albania will work in the Balkans?

The countries of the Western Balkans have a no-roaming agreement which in theory should give us all access to zero-fee data roaming between them.

In practice, that is not the case for prepaid SIM cards .

Mobile providers have the right to define how their roaming policy works and none of the options available for prepaid SIM cards in Albania include free roaming.

So, for tourists and travelers like you and me, the best option for multi-country trips is to get an eSIM.

Don’t know what eSIMs are? Check our guide on eSIMs

Best eSIM for Albania

Over the years, we have tested many different brands for eSIMs. Some were great, some were terrible.

Right now, the only two companies we can truly recommend are Airalo and Nomad .

We have always had great experiences when using their mobile plans. They are super easy to get, you can install everything within minutes, and control your data through the app.

We always had good-quality connections when using either company and can truly recommend them.

Best SIM card for Albania and Montenegro

Many people visit Albania and Montenegro within the same trip, so what is the best SIM card option for both countries?

Unfortunately, none of the local providers in Albania or Montenegro offer free roaming with their prepaid SIM card plans.

So, unless you will be staying for a long time and are willing to sign up for a long-term plan, the best option is to buy an eSIM .

FAQ – Best SIM card for traveling to Albania

Can you get 5g in albania.

Both Vodafone and One Telecom state that they offer 4G and 4G+ connection, but not 5G.

Do EU SIM cards work in Albania?

No. Since Albania is not part of the EU, most EU SIM cards will charge quite expensive roaming fees to be connected in Albania.

Buying a local SIM card or an eSIM are better option. Check the prices with Airalo .

Are roaming fees in Albania expensive?

Unless you have a plan that has no roaming fees for using data in Albania – which is available only within certain countries – roaming fees will be quite expensive .

I have personally never seen a case in which paying for roaming fees would be worth it. In Albania, this is especially true since the local mobile providers offer such price-effective offers. For only 20 EUR, you can get 40 GB of data which is more than enough for a regular tourist.

What is the best SIM card in Albania for remote workers?

Since Albania is quite an affordable destination, it is becoming quite a popular place for remote workers.

This type of traveler typically needs higher data coverage to be able to work from anywhere. In this case, the 100 GB prepaid plan from Vodafone would be the best fit. If this amount of data isn’t enough, you can always buy additional data to top it up.

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Albania – Everything Kou Need to Know

Are you wondering what are the best tourist sim cards in Albania? In this post, I will compare all the providers and their plans and will tell you what was my favourite sim card provider in Albania and why.

Albania is increasingly becoming a popular destination for travellers, backpackers and vacationers. This stunning country boasts incredible landscapes, crystal clear beaches, spectacular mountains and some of the most fascinating historical towns.

So, are you planning a trip to Albania and want to know if you need a local Albanian sim card?

If you are staying in Albania for more than just a few days, getting a sim card in Albania is recommended. Roaming charges can drive up your phone bill, so having a local sim card will save you money, allow you to call all local services and the internet packages are excellent.

Table of Contents

Why Should You Get a Local Sim Card While Travelling

With a local SIM card, you get prepaid minutes, text messages (not that anyone uses those anymore, haha) and data that you can use in that country. You need mobile data and calls for things like GPS (maps, location), emergencies, calling local guesthouses, taxis and so on.

With a local SIM card, you can avoid high roaming bills on your return.

Often you even get some roaming options for neighbouring countries.

For example, when I arrived in North Macedonia, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my Albanian One SIM included a roaming package so I could get by until I bought my Macedonian card.

As I write this, I am in Belgrade, Serbia. And since I am only staying in the country for 3 days and Wi-Fi hotspots are widely available, I will not be buying the local sim card. But if I were to stay longer in Serbia and travel to non-urban areas, I definitely would.

Roaming in Balkans

Under the new Balkan roaming rules, all domestic volumes in the Western Balkan countries of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia are valid up to the defined roaming cap.

I can confirm that my Bosnian card worked in Albania (until I bought an Albanian sim card) and my Albanian card worked in North Macedonia.

However, I did not use them long enough to see if it was worth keeping the original sim card. I always stayed longer than 2 weeks in each country, so it made sense for me to get a local sim card.

Consider an eSIM!

An alternative option that is gaining a lot of popularity is eSim. This is a great option as it will eliminate the need to get a different physical SIM card in each country. One of the most popular is Airalo eSIM .

How does it work?

An eSIM is an embedded SIM card – a tiny chip integrated directly into a phone’s circuit board. Many newer phones have such a card along with the traditional SIM. However, you should check if your phone is equipped with it before purchasing the plan.

When you purchase a data plan from the Airalo marketplace , you can install the eSIM directly in the app, via a QR code or by manually entering your eSIM info. It only takes a few moments, and depending on the package, you’ll get a plan with a certain amount of mobile data for a certain amount of time.

Practical Tips : Before purchasing a local sim card, ensure that your phone is unlocked so you can use different providers’ sim cards. These days majority of phones are unlocked, but it’s worth checking.

Where Can You Buy a SIM Card in Albania?

You can buy a sim card in almost all towns in Albania as well as at Tirana airport. The majority of towns in Albania will have Vodafone, and One stores, often more than one.

In many popular tourist destinations in Albania, you will also find pop-up stores on the streets selling local sim cards. You will have no issue buying a sim card in Albania.

You can pay by cash (I paid in both Lek and Euros) and only some will accept cards so check before buying.

Important – You will be asked for ID (passport or national ID) when purchasing any sim card in Albania. Most of the time a photo of a passport will be fine.

Best Tourist Sim Cards in Albania (2024)

Sim card providers and tourist packages, one albania.

Formerly known as Telekom Albania, One is the second-largest carrier in Albania and my personal favourite. It has a good choice of short-term and long-term tourist packages, the app actually works and the top-up options are excellent.

Tourist packages for One Albania:

Currently One offers two different tourist packages:

40GB (1000 minutes and 1000 national SMS) valid for 15 days and costing 2300 Lek.

100GB (unlimited minutes and unlimited national SMS) valid for 21 days and costing 2900 Lek.

I recommend getting the first one. If you are staying for longer than 2 weeks in Albania you will then be able to top up your card and you will no longer be limited to tourist packages.

I for example topped up 5GB for 600Lek over the app. You can also pop into the shop and ask for current offers. Check the One Albania website for current tourist packages.

Top-ups and credit checks: You can top up at all One Shops, by credit card online on One app or through another mobile phone (mobile number) by calling at +355681000141.

Pros: The app actually works, loads of data even on the cheapest package, great top-up packages, and good coverage.

Cons: Maybe slightly worse coverage than Vodafone, but I didn’t notice much difference.

Best Tourist sim cards in Albania - Everything you need to know about buying a sim card in Albania

Vodafone is still the market leader in Albania and this was the sim card I went with originally. Their tourist packages are excellent and you get more options than with One.

What made me change into One was how non-existent/mon functional the app was. It might work better on your phone or at the time you read this article, but I didn’t want to go to the shop every time I wanted to check my balance, how much data I had left or to top up.

Tourist packages for Vodafone Albania:

Vodafone changed the packages in May 2023 and it is literally mimicking the One after:

Top-ups and credit checks: Recharges can be made by sending the 12-digit code of the scratch card via SMS to 141 or through calling 142 from a Vodafone mobile number or through Vodafone e-top-up. Check credit by sending an SMS for free with the text “Balance” to 141. Credit validity depends on the top-up amount.

Pros: The oldest and most reliable provider. According to many loyal users.

Cons: Very glitchy app, at times not working at all

Best Tourist sim cards in Albania - Everything you need to know about buying a sim card in Albania

ALB Telecom

This provider has now merged with One Albania therefore I do not recommend looking into their offers. As it stands right now (2024) the two best tourist SIM card providers in Albania are One and Vodafone.

My Favourite Sim Card Provider in Albania

Having used both Vodafone and One, my personal recommendation for the best SIM card in Albania is One.

I liked their tourist package and the different top-up options, I always received excellent service in their stores and their app, although not the best app in the world, worked really well for what I needed it for. I was able to check my credit, top up my balance and choose a data package that suited me.

Even when I arrived in North Macedonia, I was still connected, so I can confirm that Balkan roaming works just fine.

I hope you found this guide to the best tourist sim cards in Albania useful. Albania is an incredible country and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. If you have any questions please ask in the comments and I will be happy to answer.

Until then, enjoy Albania and happy travels!

Best E-Sim Cards for Traveling to Albania in 2024

one albania tourist sim

Are you planning your trip to Albania and looking for the best e-sim card to stay connected and avoid high roaming charges? This is a complete guide with everything you need to know about using an e-sim card when traveling to Albania and a comparison of the best Albania e-sim cards in 2024.

Don’t waste money on high roaming charges, read my recommendations below and order an e-sim card for Albania on the internet and get connected in just a couple minutes. Below you will find an Albania e-sim comparison, up to date prices as per June 2024, all specifications and my recommendations.

This guide will also show you where and when to order an e-sim card for Albania, answer all your FAQ about using e-sim cards, a comparison with local prepaid sim cards for Albania and of course links to directly order your e-sim card for traveling to Albania.

Since 2012 I am already traveling the world full time and throughout the years I turned my passion for traveling into a lifestyle and became a full time nomadic travel blogger . That is why I constantly get to a different country and pretty much every week I need to look for a new sim card to stay connected.

In 2023 I visited for example 34 different countries so imagine how many different prepaid and e-sim cards I used throughout the year.

In the past I used to buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival in every country, but nowadays I mostly use e-sim cards to stay connected when traveling abroad. On my latest trip to Albania I tested the below recommended Albania e-sim cards for tourists.

Helping other travelers to save money while traveling the world is one of the reasons I started this travel blog. Providing essential travel tips is what made me start writing sim card guides from every country I visited and now on Traveltomtom you can already find more than 200 sim card guides from all over the world.

Traveltomtom also wrote e-sim card guides for: South Korea , Japan , Saudi Arabia ,  Switzerland , Romania , Morocco , Brazil , Mexico , Singapore , Vietnam , Asia , Europe , USA and many more.

Traveltomtom also wrote a specific guide for finding the best prepaid sim card for Albania with more info about the 4G/5G network coverage maps.

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid sim card and e-sim card advice for your holiday destination. Bookmark Traveltomtom and let me help you save money!

Let me start with giving you my e-sim card recommendation for Albania in 2024. These are my favorite e-sim cards for traveling to Albania in 2024.

Some links in this article about the best e-sim cards for Albania are affiliate links. If you buy any product after clicking on an affiliate link I will earn a small commission. Don’t worry this is at absolutely no extra cost to you!

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends the following two e-sim cards for traveling to Albania:

Airalo e-sim for Albania  - $26.00 USD

  • 10 GB data
  • valid for 30 days
  • Operates on the Vodafone and One network
  • data-only e-sim
  • valid in Albania only
  • $2.6 USD per Gigabyte

SimOptions e-sim for Albania  - $26.00 USD

There is literally no difference between the above e-sim cards from Airalo and SimOptions. They are the exact same!

Traveltomtom has had uncountable great experiences with Airalo as well as SimOptions.

Both e-sim cards are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls/sms are not supported. There is no 5G yet in Albania so both e-sims operate on the 4G/LTE network.

The only difference between SimOptions and Airalo is that Airalo specifies that it uses the Vodafone as well as the One mobile data network in Albania and SimOptions does not specify which network it uses.

There are only 2 mobile internet providers in Albania: One and Vodafone. So with an e-sim card from Airalo you are secured the have a phone signal wherever you go.

The other difference between Simoptions and Airalo is that SimOptions also has another e-sim card for Albania with 20 GB data for $49.90 USD.

Both e-sim providers offer e-sim card plans for Albania starting from just $4.5 USD.

Is Albania one of your stops on a trip around the world then you can also look into getting an e-sim card for world travelers . There are a bunch of e-sim cards that cover multiple countries and some are great for traveling to Europe, Asia and America.

Although Albania is in Europe it is not part of the European Union and therefore European sim cards do not work in Albania.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an e-sim card for Albania or in general before using an e-sim card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards for tourists only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: e-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to Albania.

However, you can still order a sim card for Albania on the internet before your trip. Find out everything you need to know about international sim cards for traveling abroad in 2024 .

Comparison of the best e-sim cards for Albania

The best way to get a tourist e-sim card for Albania is ordering one on the internet.

But that said, you can also buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival and request an e-sim instead of a physical sim card. There are 2 mobile internet providers: One and Vodafone. However, as of June 2024 only Vodafone offers e-sim cards for tourists. But you can buy these e-sims only in a Vodafone store in Albania.

Luckily there are multiple e-sim providers that sell Albania e-sim cards for tourists on the internet. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Albania from one of the well-known e-sim card providers that have proven to be reliable operators.

Traveltomtom has tested and reviewed multiple e-sim providers: Airalo, Holafly, Jetpac, SimOptions, Nomad, etc. Traveltomtom's trusted favorites are  SimOptions  and  Airalo .

Nowadays, you can buy an e-sim card for pretty much every country in the world. Order directly from one of the above e-sim card providers and instantly receive your e-sim card in your email. But before you buy an e-sim card first read all my tips below.

SimOptions is the only e-sim provider that also offers international prepaid sim cards for Albania . These are pre-activated physical prepaid sim cards that will be delivered to your door step before your trip and it is plug and play when you arrive in Albania.

Airalo, Jetpac, Holafly and Nomad only sell e-sim cards for Albania.

Airalo is a very reliable e-sim card provider and Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times in more than 50 countries around the world. I can totally recommend using Airalo for ordering an e-sim card for Albania.

Why using Airalo? Airalo is one of the most recommended e-sim providers and very reliable. Airalo has e-sim cards for pretty much every country in the world.

SimOptions is a reputable e-sim card provider that is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering your tourist e-sim card for Albania through SimOptions is done fast and easy.

Traveltomtom has used SimOptions uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and often some of the cheapest e-sim card deals.

SimOptions is specialized in international e-sim cards valid in multiple countries including calling and texting. However, their e-sims for Albania are just like Airalo also data-only e-sims valid in Albania only.

simoptions esim cards for albania 2024

Here are the SimOptions e-sim cards for Albania in 2024:

  • 3 GB data for 15 days = $10.90 USD
  • 20 GB data for 30 days = $49.90 USD

Unfortunately SimOptions does not specify on which mobile data network in Albania they operate. All of the SimOptions e-sims for Albania only support 4G/LTE.

The validity of these e-sim cards is 1 year and the credit validity starts only when you reach Albania and the e-sim connects the first time to a supported network. For more info check the SimOptions website .

Lately Traveltomtom started recommending Nomad e-sim cards as they sometimes have cheap tourist e-sims for a lot of countries.

Although Nomad has some good e-sim card plans for Albania, Traveltomtom had lately some issues with the performance as well as the installing of Nomad e-sim cards, so it is not Traveltomtom's first recommended e-sim for traveling to Albania in 2024. But they are not bad.

nomad esim cards for albania 2024

Here are the Nomad e-sim card plans for Albania for 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $10 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $29 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $20 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $52 USD

Click here to order an e-sim card for Albania from Nomad .

I am sure the first thing you noticed was that the prices for Nomad Albania e-sims do not make any sense, but well... it is what it is.

The Nomad website is also a little less user friendly for finding the best e-sim card for your trip to Albania. Depending on your device you can't see all e-sim card plans in one overview, you have to click a little here and there.

The best value Nomad e-sim card for Albania is the one with 5 GB data for $20 USD,  which comes down to $4 USD per Gigabyte. Compared to other e-sim providers Nomad e-sims for Albania are more expensive.

The Nomad e-sim cards are from Nomad Black and they are data-only. Incoming and outgoing calls and sms are NOT supported. The Nomad Black e-sim cards from Nomad operate on the 4G/LTE network of Vodafone in Albania.

nomad albania esim card specifications

The Nomad Albania e-sim cards have to be installed on your phone within 60 days and after installation its validity starts when it connects for the first time to a supported network in Albania or automatically after 60 days. Basically when the plane lands you are online. For more info check the Nomad website .

Holafly sells e-sim cards for Albania with unlimited data. Traveltomtom is not a fan of this and later I will explain why.

  • 5 days 'unlimited' data = $27 USD
  • 7 days 'unlimited' data = $34 USD
  • 10 days 'unlimited' data = $37 USD
  • 15 days 'unlimited' data = $47 USD
  • 20 days 'unlimited' data = $57 USD

The Holafly e-sim cards for Albania are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls/sms are NOT supported. These e-sims do also not come with a phone number. The Holafly e-sims operate on the 4G/LTE network of One and Vodafone.

Why 'unlimited'? Because there is a Fair Use Policy and Traveltomtom has had bad experiences with this in the past. Suddenly your data speed is slowed down for 24 hours because you apparently used too much data.

If I hate something then it is slow data speed. Therefore Traveltomtom's is not a fan of e-sim cards with 'unlimited' data. More info later.

vodafone tourist sim card tirana airport

There are only 2 mobile internet operators in Albania: One and Vodafone. As of June 2024 One only provides physical prepaid sim cards for tourists, but Vodafone also offers e-sims.

You can only buy these e-sim cards in a Vodafone store in Albania or on arrival at the airport.

Read more about it in my complete guide for buying a sim card at Tirana Airport .

  • 40 GB data + 1,000 minutes for 15 days = 2,300 Lek - $24 USD
  • 100 GB data + unlimited minutes for 21 days = 2,900 Lek - $31 USD

There is no EU data roaming included, but data is valid in all Western Balkan countries: Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia.

What is the cheapest e-sim card for Albania?

cheapest esim for albania

The cheapest e-sim card for Albania is either an  Airalo  or a SimOptions e-sim card for $4.5 USD. This e-sim gives you 1 GB data for 7 days, is only valid in Albania and does not support calling and texting.

Why ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Albania

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Albania in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes.

The most important reason to get an e-sim card is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to Albania without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless.

One of the best things about arriving in Albania with an activated e-sim card is that you are online as soon as the plane lands. More about when to instal your e-sim card later.

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to Albania, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to Albania so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don’t want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to avoid high data roaming charges!

Overseas data roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed. Do you have the patience to handle 3G? It is frustrating when all around you in pretty much all of the amazing tourist destinations in Albania there is at least 4G/LTE available and even a 5G signal.

And price-wise it should be a no brainer since you have seen how affordable the e-sim cards for Albania are. Why would you pay $5 to $10 USD per day on an overseas data roaming plan that limits your data speed.

Uncountable times travel friends have asked me: “Tom, can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!” Trust me, invest a couple dollars in an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Albania  if you want a physical prepaid sim card.

Stay connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

Where to buy an e-sim card for Albania?

You can buy an e-sim card for Albania through an e-sim card provider on the internet. There are multiple e-sim card providers for Albania. Traveltomtom compared around 7 different e-sim card providers and concluded that  SimOptions  and  Airalo  are the best and most reliable e-sim card providers in 2024.

When buying an e-sim card for Albania through one of the e-sim providers you only need your email address and the e-sim card is instantly ready to use after installation. There is no ID registration needed.

On arrival in Albania

There are 2 main mobile internet providers in Albania: Vodafone and One. Vodafone offers e-sims for Albania, but One does not. When buying a prepaid sim card in a Vodafone store in Albania you can opt for a physical prepaid sim card as well as an e-sim.

Traveltomtom researched the best Albania prepaid sim cards for tourists in 2024 and also compared the 4G/5G mobile data networks of the mobile internet operators in Albania, more about it later.

When to order/activate an e-sim card for Albania?

You can order an e-sim card for Albania pretty much any time you want. Most e-sim cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 or 2 months after purchasing, sometimes even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of departure to Albania or a day before. You will need a stable internet connection to instal your e-sim card. The airport in Tirana does have WiFi, but it was barely working when I was visiting Albania, so it is not recommended to install your e-sim card on arrival in Tirana.

Very important is to make sure you have a stable internet connection or you might run into issues with your e-sim. Therefore just to make sure Traveltomtom advices you to install/activate your e-sim card in your home country.

My personal advice is to instal your tourist e-sim card for Albania before you get into the plane, because then as soon as the plane lands in Albania you will be connected to the internet and you can enjoy data on your phone instantly.

How do I know all this info about e-sims? Traveltomtom uses on average more than 30 e-sim cards per year because of my nomadic lifestyle of constantly traveling the world, 365 days a year, since 2012.

How to activate an e-sim card

Installing and activating an e-sim card is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an e-sim card and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email after you ordered your e-sim.

But wait, forget about the instructions, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code!

When you order an e-sim card plan for Albania you instantly receive a summary of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed.

You will see a summary of your e-sim card order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your Albania e-sim card. Regardless where you order your e-sim card, all e-sim providers send you detailed instructions.

But installing an activating an e-sim card is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the e-sim card on. The QR code contains all the information about your Albania e-sim card.

Once you scan the QR code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your e-sim card is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your e-sim card otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur.

Tip: if you order an e-sim card with the same phone where you want to instal the e-sim card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

Things to know before ordering an e-sim card for Albania

Here are some general tips and answers to FAQ for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for Albania e-sim cards, but are things you have to know before buying an e-sim card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to Albania. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a portable WiFi for staying connected when traveling to Albania or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to Albania and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an e-sim card is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support e-sim cards.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these e-sim card providers?

All the e-sim card providers for Albania recommended above are reputable e-sim card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in Albania.

Traveltomtom has successfully used prepaid and e-sim cards from SimOptions and Airalo or more than 5 years. Nomad is fairly new to Traveltomtom, but Nomad has so far proven to be a reliable e-sim card provider as well.

That said, Traveltomtom has faced some issues with installing Nomad e-sim card which was a bit disappointing and therefore it is recommended to follow all steps exactly as described and make sure you are connected to a stable internet connection.

All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems with your purchased e-sim or in case you want to claim a refund.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell Albania e-sim cards, I only RECOMMEND you to use e-sim cards for your next trip to Albania instead of buying a local prepaid sim card.

Can I keep my phone number from home with an Albania e-sim card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to Albania. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card.

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new Albania e-sim card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

This is also the trick to keep receiving sms for example for OTP (one time password) sms to login to applications.

Switching between physical and e-sim cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings. Just always make sure your sim card from home is switched off for data roaming.

Can I make phone calls with an Albania e-sim card?

No, unfortunately all the tourist e-sim cards for Albania available on the internet do NOT include calling and texting. The e-sim cards from SimOptions , Nomad , Holafly and  Airalo are data-only e-sim cards and any outgoing calls/sms are not supported.

If you buy a local prepaid sim card for tourists on arrival in Albania you can get a sim card with calling and texting included.

But pretty much all hotels, restaurants, guides and tour companies in Albania have WhatsApp services, so you can easily give them a call through WhatsApp. There is no direct need for local calling minutes.

Does an Albania e-sim card come with a phone number?

No, none of the Albania e-sim cards you can buy on the internet come with a phone number, which also means you can not receive any phone calls or sms.

In the above Albania e-sim card comparison you can find all the specifications per e-sim card.

If you buy a local Vodafone sim card in a store in Albania you can get an e-sim card which comes with a phone number from Albania that starts with +355.

Can I use 5G on an Albania e-sim card?

Don't worry about finding a 5G signal when traveling to Albania. As of June 2024 there is no 5G available yet in Albania. This means all the e-sim cards for Albania only support 4G/LTE.

All the best places to visit in Albania offer a good 4G/LTE signal and the data speed is pretty good even on 4G/LTE. Later more about the best mobile data network in Albania.

Are there e-sim cards for Albania with unlimited data?

Yes, the Holafly e-sim cards for Albania include unlimited data.

Holafly is an e-sim card provider that sells e-sim cards with unlimited data, but it is not really unlimited as there is a so called Fair Use Policy (FUP). Holafly does not specify what is the FUP for its Albania e-sim cards.

If you order an e-sim card with unlimited data then always make sure the unlimited data is on max data speed. Mostly the data speed is capped after you used X amount of Gigabytes. this is what is called the Fair Use Policy.

Traveltomtom does not directly recommend Albania e-sim cards with unlimited data plans, because of the restrictions and data speed reduction.

I personally once experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. When I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media apps were not loading!

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards for Albania with unlimited data. But if you think you will never use more than 2 GB per day, then this might be your favorite e-sim card.

However, then you should ask yourself: what is the point of an e-sim with unlimited data if you can only use 2 GB per day.

The  Airalo e-sim for Albania with 10 GB data  is for most travelers more than enough for their trip to Albania and there is no need for unlimited data anyway as the WiFi in hotels, bars and restaurants are pretty on point.

There are a lot of different specifications per e-sim card. Another reason why I advice you to take a close look at my comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Albania in 2024 before choosing your favorite.

Are e-sim cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to Albania?

E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Albania, but what is the best way?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to Albania:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards.

Let’s compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards , for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.

In general if you use a lot of data local prepaid sim cards are a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip.

The local prepaid sim cards from Vodafone and One, which you can buy in phone stores in Albania have better rates per Gigabyte than the sim cards you can order online.

When buying a local prepaid sim card in Albania you can choose to get a physical prepaid sim card or an e-sim card for tourists. But only Vodafone provides e-sim cards for tourists. One only has physical prepaid sim cards available.

Downside is that you can only get these local prepaid sim cards on arrival in Albania in a phone store or at a sim card shop at the airport. Traveltomtom also wrote specific guides for buying a sim card at Tirana Airport .

If your smartphone is not e-sim compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Albania. These are physical prepaid sim cards you order on the internet and will be delivered to your home address.

Some of these are great for visiting Albania and are valid in up to 124 countries around the world and you can easily order them online.

If after visiting Albania you are traveling onwards in America, Africa, Asia or in Europe then check Traveltomtom’s list of the best sim cards for traveling internationally in 2024 .

As I mentioned before SimOptions is the only sim card provider that also sells physical prepaid sim cards for traveling internationally.

international prepaid sim card for albania

A pre-activated physical sim card will be delivered to your door step before your trip to Albania. You put this physical sim card in your phone and as soon as the plane touches the ground in Albania and the sim card connects to a supported network you are online. Plug and play!

If you look at the international prepaid sim card above you see that the physical sim card version of the Orange Holiday World is also a good option for traveling to Albania.

A physical prepaid sim card with 10 GB data only costs $49.90 USD, which is $4.99 USD per Gigabyte.

Click here to order a physical prepaid sim card for Albania via SimOptions .

As explained throughout the article there are two different e-sim cards for traveling in Albania:

  • E-sim cards that you buy on the internet through a third party
  • E-sim cards that you buy in Albania in a mobile internet provider store

As of 2024 some of the mobile internet providers in Albania also sell e-sim cards for tourists. In all official phone stores of Vodafone when buying a local prepaid sim for tourists you can choose to get a physical prepaid sim card or an e-sim card.

E-sim cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an e-sim card on the internet is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Albania, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple clicks. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to Albania.

You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop on arrival in Albania. As soon as the plane lands, you are online!

But what is cheaper? An e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card for tourists?

When we compare the prices for Albania e-sim cards with the prices for local prepaid sim cards in Albania Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that local prepaid sim cards cost the same but give you more Gigabyte.

If you buy a prepaid sim card on arrival in Albania from Vodafone you get a sim card for around $25 USD with a total of 40 GB data and 1,000 minutes.

Local prepaid sim cards can only be bought in Albania on arrival in a phone store or at the airport.

The best value e-sim for Albania you order on the internet is an  Airalo e-sim card for Albania with 10 GB data for $26 USD . You can also order this sim card via SimOptions for the same price.

However, if you just need 1 GB data for your trip to Albania, then ordering an e-sim card on the internet is cheaper as you can order an Airalo e-sim card for $5 USD only.

As you can see on local prepaid sim cards you get more Gigabytes for the same price as on Albania e-sims.

But buying a local prepaid sim card in Albania takes time and can be a hassle. After a long flight you just want to get to your hotel and it is often a big task to find a sim card shop where you can buy a local prepaid sim card. With an e-sim card that you order on the internet you are connected as soon as the plane lands.

An e-sim card for Albania can be bought in just 2 minutes on the internet at any time of day without any form of identification and as soon as the plane touches the ground you enjoy a data connection on your phone.

Simply because of this convenience Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim cards for Albania.

There are many reasons why a lot of travelers simply get an e-sim card for visiting Albania: faster, easier, less stress and even cheaper depending on how much data you need.

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an e-sim card is that e-sim cards are in general through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO’s operate on the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that e-sim cards through an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy. Especially during peak times, the performance of an e-sim cards could be less compared to a local prepaid sim card from a mobile internet operator you bought in Albania.

Bottomline: the data speed of e-sim cards can be less compared to a local prepaid Albania sim card.

In reality you won't really notice the difference much because yes it may occur that your data speed is a little slower for a couple minutes, but it is still fast enough to roam the internet without any problems.

Best 4G/5G network in Albania

vodafone 4g 5g network coverage map albania 2024

Traveltomtom researched the 4G/5G network of all the mobile internet providers in Albania and compared the mobile internet coverage maps of Vodafone and One.

Although the above mobile data network coverage map is updated for 2024 it is not 100% accurate. However, is it a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Albania in 2024.

Traveltomtom came to the conclusion that Vodafone has the best 4G/5G mobile data network in Albania in 2024. For more information check out Traveltomtom's article about the best prepaid sim card for Albania in 2024 , including a comparison of the network coverage maps of One and Vodafone.

The  Nomad  e-sim cards for Albania operate on the 4G/LTE network of Vodafone. The Holafly and  Airalo  e-sim cards for Albania operate on the 4G/LTE of both Vodafone and One and ensures therefore the best connection. Unfortunately  SimOptions  does not specify on which network they operate in Albania.

I am sure some of the above tips for finding the best e-sim card for your trip to Albania were helpful. I hope that after reading through my e-sim comparison and all my tips and tricks it was easier to make a decision and order your preferred e-sim card for Albania.

Additional information

Sim card validity.

The prepaid card remains valid for a period of 30 days from the date of the last top-up. Failure to recharge the prepaid account within this timeframe will result in the loss of active user status for the subscriber. Consequently, the subscriber will be unable to initiate outgoing calls while retaining the ability to receive incoming calls.

To restore outgoing call functionality, the subscriber may recharge their account within the subsequent 150 days, or 420 days for users utilizing eSIM cards on tourist packages, through the acquisition of prepaid vouchers, electronic recharges, money transfers, or other methods approved by One Montenegro. Failure to recharge the account within the specified duration will lead to deactivation of the card, thereby depriving the subscriber of both incoming and outgoing call capabilities. Should the subscriber wish to reactivate the card subsequent to deactivation, they may do so within a period of 30 days from the date of deactivation by recharging the number at any One Montenegro branch.
