Them Crooked Vultures reunite for first time in 12 years at Taylor Hawkins tribute concert

Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones returned to the stage together for the first time since 2010

Hard rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures reunited to play songs together for the first time in twelve years at last night's special Taylor Hawkins tribute concert . The show, which was put on by Foo Fighters and took place at Wembley Stadium in front of a packed and emotional crowd, featured appearances from an abundance of rock megastars, including members of Rush , Oasis, Queen, The Beatles, Metallica, AC/DC and many more.

Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme made an early appearance to cover David Bowie classic Let's Dance with Nile Rodgers, Chris Chaney and Omar Hakim, but it was his appearance later in the set that really got tongues wagging.

Flanked by Dave Grohl on drums and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones on bass, plus live guitarist Alain Johannes, it marked the first time Them Crooked Vultures had played on stage since since a show at Japan's Fuji Rock Festival in July 2010.

The band - who were officially introduced by Homme near the end of their three-song set - were greeted with rapturous applause, covering Elton John anthem Goodbye Yellow Brick Road before launching into Them Crooked Vultures track Gunman and, finally, Queens Of The Stone Age's Long Slow Goodbye , taken from 2005 album Lullabies To Paralyze .

Them Crooked Vultures formed in 2009, playing a flurry of concerts over the following year and releasing one album, their critically-acclaimed self-titled debut. The band had since never ruled out a reunion, with Dave Grohl telling The Guardian in 2019: "Technically we’re  still  a band...We practise once every decade, and we’re coming up on another decade aren’t we? I don’t have any official news but there’s always something cooking.”

Merlin moved into his role as Executive Editor of Louder in early 2022, following over ten years working at Metal Hammer. Back in my festival-going days, a major part of the excitement in the build-up was seeing the stage times released, a few weeks in advance; as soon as they were up on the web, the challenge was to pick apart the scheduling, and look for holes where secret bands appear. Sure enough, at Leeds festival back in 2009, the Friday appeared to have a gaping hole in the middle of the afternoon on the second stage. The cat was quite obviously out of the bag to some degree, because the tent neared capacity at around three o’ clock in the afternoon, despite nobody being scheduled to play, although whether or not most of the crowd was aware that three of the biggest names in rock were about to take the stage was another matter entirely. Josh Homme, Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones strolled out like it was nothing, launching straight into the noodling riffs of ‘Elephants’; they’d go on to treat the crowd to a set that ran over an hour, previewing most of their then-forthcoming self-titled record.

Homme was on classic form, offsetting furious riffery with that trademark matter-of-fact vocal delivery, whilst just seeing Jones playing the bass was enough for most; the guy was in Led Zeppelin, for crying out loud. There’s no question who the real star was, though; the crowd went wild for Grohl, who, if we’re honest, is probably the single biggest rock star of his generation. Whatever you think of the Foo Fighters, it just felt right to see him back behind the kit - whether he’ll be able to take enough time off from his ‘day job’ to go back to the Vultures remains to be seen, but if he manages it, you’ll do well to find a more heavyweight supergroup anywhere.

Report as inappropriate

It is fair to say that supergroups often fall short of the high expectations we perhaps unjustly but frequently have of them. However, the Josh Homme / Dave Grohl / John Paul Jones cocktail that is Them Crooked Vultures was far from a disappointment when I saw them make their ‘secret’ appearance at Reading Festival in 2009. They had not been included in the released festival lineup, but somehow a whole lot of people had found out that they were due to perform all the same. Although having only recently formed, they put on a spectacle that was hard to forget! The NME/Radio 1 tent was packed to the rafters with fans eager to see these legends do what they do best and the band opened with ‘Elephant’, an original TCV track that was extremely well received by the rock-reverent onlookers. Dave Grohl’s engagement with the crowd clearly demonstrated his excellent showmanship skills, a highlight being his decision to empty a bottle of water over himself to cool off after a particularly furious and exuberant drum solo. Josh Homme’s superb riff work provided the set with spades of energy and urgency, whilst Jones held it all together on bass. Overall: a fantastically intense and star studded festival experience!

THEM CROOKED VULTURES: North American Tour Dates Announced

THEM CROOKED VULTURES — the new supergroup consisting of FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl , QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE singer/guitarist Josh Homme and LED ZEPPELIN bassist John Paul Jones — has scheduled a number of North American tour dates in October.

The dates kick off with an October 2 performance at the Austin City Limits music festival, to be preceded by a September 30 "Austin City Limits" TV taping to air at a later date (to be announced),as well as an appearance at the October 1 Austin City Limits festival pre-party.

Tickets for the headline shows go on sale Saturday, September 5 at 10 a.m. local time.

The band made its live debut on August 9 at the Metro club in Chicago, shortly after Lollapalooza closed its third and final day at nearby Grant Park.

THEM CROOKED VULTURES , which has been in the works for four years, will release an album and hit the road sometime later this year, but official details have yet to be announced. So far all the band has done is put up a web site as well as Twitter , Facebook , MySpace and YouTube pages.

Them Crooked Vultures Announce U.S. Tour Dates

Them Crooked Vultures -- a/k/a Dave Grohl (drums, backing vocals), Josh Homme (guitar, vocals) and John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards, backing vocals) -- has confirmed the dates of its first ever North American tour. The dates kick off with an October 2 performance at the Austin City Limits music festival, to be preceded by a September 30 Austin City Limits TV taping to air at a later date TBD, as well as an appearance at the October 1 Austin City Limits festival pre-party.

Tickets for the headline shows go on sale Saturday, September 5 at 10 a.m. local time.

To date, Them Crooked Vultures has played one show on U.S. soil, an August 9 one-off at Chicago's Cabaret Metro. Of that show, the Chicago Sun-Times hailed the band as "one of the rarest things in rock: a supergroup that not only deserves that appellation, but which actually is greater than the sum of its storied parts," while the Chicago Tribune opined "The term 'supergroup' gets thrown around way too often in rock, but in the case of Them Crooked Vultures, it applies." The band recently wrapped a string of surprise appearances across Europe and the UK, of which the Times of London remarked "the sound climbed to super-threatening levels and the music new heights of heaviosity...this was a monster on the loose" and the Sun added "there were moments of gentleness too - including some mesmerising piano work from Jones."

Following Austin City Limits, Them Crooked Vultures' headline dates commence October 5 at the Nashville War Memorial and include engagements in Columbus, Detroit, Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
