Once you reach adulthood , w ho is the person you don’t want to be separated from?

Night Journey (Kanji: 夜行; Romaji: Yakou), is the 13th and second-to-the-last track in Yorushika’s “Plagiarism” album that was released last July 29, 2020. [1] It was also played in the animated Netflix movie, “A Whisker Away,” for which a total of three Yorushika songs were used as the movie’s official soundtracks. The original translation of the lyrics was written by Glens (グレンズ) @Glens_sou .

N-buna, the lyricist, composer, and arranger in Yorushika, often writes love songs that are unrequited, unconsciously expressed, or having to let go of people (e.g. Say It, That’s Why I Gave Up on Music). Suis gives the perfect vocalizations of the songs, and Night Journey is the sort of a calm acceptance of facts about some challenges in adulthood. Night Journey’s a sweet and subtly painful, relatable song–but it’s artistic because of its universality trait. It doesn’t limit your perspective by making you know that this or that is the story, who is who and to whom–it’s up to your imagination to fill in the blanks.

I’ll present the descriptions of the MV then my interpretations that, hopefully, should guide you to analyze the song on your own, too. Then, I’ll provide a few QnA’s and additional helpful information that I have gathered. It took me at least five repeats of the song to be able to decipher the meaning. It’s fun to analyze when you are more informed of the symbolisms and culture of the song origin (Japan).

Intro: Childhood Days

“Say, if the night comes like this, what will become of us?”

The MV features two characters: a boy and a girl during childhood.

In the first half of the song, they spent their time together in summer. The boy plucked a flower in the roadside and gave it to the girl who is taller (and most likely a few years older) than him. Different interpretations about their relationship can spring up right at this gesture. They can’t be automatically lovers for the single gesture, but they do seem to hold affection for one another. Given the younger boy’s sweet gesture of giving a flower to the girl who is taller and a few years older than him; they walked together holding hands; and they sat together in the neighborhood’s street side.

I think the first part is in the girl’s perspective because the lyrics sound like a mature mind’s voice. She says, “Let’s ride the train. As for me, I think I’m fine going anywhere.” She intends to arrive at a destination, metaphorically. Perhaps going to any path down the road in life. This line’s intriguingly creative, because it didn’t mention that the girl will follow the boy. Just joining him is all.

Then she adds, “I guess you still don’t understand, but even the skies are made of words.” I think latter words are a metaphor that there are things we can’t touch, but have been set to stone already. In short, it’s fate. None of them can control what the sky, or fate, has in store for their own, individual paths.

The first chorus ends with this line:

“In the twilight, twilight, twilight of a wavy summer field, your crying won’t stop, accompanied by the evening cicada’s laughter. Summer is coming to an end. So, that’s how it’s going to be, huh…” The boy could be crying at the end of the summer because he didn’t want to get separated with the girl. In Japan, summer comes around starting June and ending in August. The two wouldn’t be together outside those months.

After the first chorus, both characters have grown taller and grew as teenagers.

Middle: Reaching Adulthood

“Say, when we become adults one day, what would become of us?”

Adulthood is very different from what you initially knew. The boy, who was an adolescent at the second part, was thinking of a future with the girl. His raising of his hand to the back of his head signaled that he is the one voicing the lyrics. It also hints that he has an idea that their paths may become separated. He was wondering what their next step together as adults could be.

Right after that, the girl walked ahead of him, and he was only able to watch her go. She got off her “night train” or “night journey” and separated from the boy. There are two possibilities why: 1) the boy asked her out and got rejected, or 2) the girl found a different priority in her life that has nothing to do with the boy. Either way hurt him, considering that he was hoping to still be with her with the next lyrics, “Is there something, anything you want to do?” For close friends, lovers, or families, asking this question connotes that you want to indulge in someone’s company.

The following lines, “You’d probably forget about it eventually, but only memories speak the truth,” show that the man is recalling their journey often. There may be times that they won’t think of each other, but the fact remains that they spent summer together and had a special bond.

Conclusion: Arrive and Go

At this part, the boy have become a fully grown man. The girl lingers in a special place in his mind, and he finds her around the neighborhood (I assume it’s the neighborhood, because it’s a location in “A Whisker Away”). The girl holds out her hand to the man (just like she did in the first parts of the MV) and the man holds it. She suddenly disappears while the next lyrics go, “ I see, so you’ve become an adult, huh .” In the man’s perspective, the girl being an adult means she has her own life going on and about, all without him involved. In the girl’s perspective, the boy has finally become an adult and has come to terms that separations do happen.

This line’s like a reply to the earlier line, “ I guess you still don’t understand, but even the skies are made of words. ” It is set that adulthood is composed of painful challenges like letting close friends/lovers/families go. At this point, the man has learned it the hard way.

The girl’s sudden disappearance could mean two different things: 1) she could have passed away after meeting him as an adult; or 2) she could have went to a different town, province, or went overseas. Her sudden disappearance tells that they can’t really be together as adults, for whatever reason (it’s up to the viewer’s imagination). There are many reasons why friends/lovers/family can’t be together–priorities weigh more along the way.

“And I’ll remain here while you’ll keep going far away, to the other side.” Here’s the grown-up man who was by himself in their usual spot and the girl is no longer with him in the summer. It could have been him always crying every end of the summer, or the girl. I’m considering varied interpretations. But the fact remains that the girl arrived in his life, and she went away, getting off her “night train.”

N-buna likes to write lyrics that are about the small things. The final lines in the lyrics of Night Journey says,

“And I’ll remain here while you’ll keep going far away, to the other side. So that’s how it’s going to be, huh…”

It’s a perfect ending that shows the man has come to terms about the facts of adulthood. N-buna showed the emotions, not just tell them.

Who are the characters?

I’ve been hauling the YouTube comments for any hint about the identity of the two characters. Could they be the main characters from A Whisker Away, Hinode and Miyo, who have gone their separate ways after the canon story? Or could the boy and girl be in the same movie universe with their own human stories? I can’t pinpoint exactly.

What’s their relationship?

At first glance, the sweet melody and Suis’ mellow voice made me think they’re kids who have mutual fluffy feelings, but the girl is older than the boy, so this leads us to other possibilities. They could be also simply childhood friends who regard each other dearly. I think they are childhood friends who treasured each other, but the other one went to the other side when they met again during adulthood.

Why would they separate ways?

Interestingly, we are given the privilege by n-buna to fill in the blanks. He does not explicitly mention in the media the reason for the characters’ separation. But we can still make inferences. I mentioned earlier that there are many reasons that can cause people to go down to different paths in their lives, even if those paths mean that they won’t be with the people they are fond of. It’s part of adult life: to let go of people, no matter how important they are to us. Probably because of our busy careers, or we moved to a different home, or things are not going well in between two people. And Night Journey presents that fact of separation subtly.

Flower Symbolism: Anemone Nikoensis

Anemone nikoensis (Katakana: イチリンソウ; Romaji: Ichirinsou) grows naturally in Japan. We’ll need a local to tell us about this flower significantly involved in the lyrics. According to a commenter in the MV, 個体 (Romaji: Kotai), the flower blooms from April to May. As June arrives and until August ends, the flowers wither. In flower language, anemone nikoensis means “recollection”, “deep thoughts”, and “beauty of (eternity?).” (I know, I’ll have to study more Japanese and lessen my dependence on Google-san.)

This is the flower that was mentioned in the chorus, “ The song you wrote and anemone flowers are fluttering, fluttering about gently on a sunny field.”

Other Title translations

The song is officially translated in English as “Night Journey.” The Japanese language, especially its kanji characters, usually have different meanings or definitions even though they use the same kanji. Other translations of 夜行, the Japanese title, is “night train,” and “night travel.” (Again, from Google-san.)

Another YouTube commenter, 10 exp, said that n-buna tweeted this in his now-deleted personal account:

“Night Journey is a poem I wrote as an analogy to becoming an adult, forgetting, and dying at night. It is a single flower of spring flowers that hangs on the clear rust (spring), and the flower language is reminiscence, and this song is also a summer song that recalls the flowers that bloom in spring. Give it to someone who wants to go the night of life.”

I’m not sure what the first clause of the second sentence means, Google-san did the job for me. I just tweaked some parts to make it more understandable (or bearable to read).

Subject Matter: Night on the Galactic Railroad

Yorushika often uses literary work as their subject matter, as mentioned on one comment written in Japanese by とまとまと (tomotomoto) in the official MV. It mentions that the song probably uses the literary work, “Night on the Galactic Railroad” [2] written by Kenji Miyazawa as the subject matter. Yorushika also used “The Nighthawk Star” for “Fireworks Beneath My Shoes.” [3] The rest of the translated comment goes like this:

“The protagonist finds himself on a galaxy railroad with his friends and travels to different places. However, him and his friend gets off, and finally the friend disappears. Then, the main character wakes up from his dream and finds out that his friend has died. The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “night train” is the night train, but the song also says, “Would you like to take a train?” This can be taken as if the two of us were talking about traveling on a galaxy railroad at the end. Furthermore, the biggest reason that led to this consideration is the part that “I will arrive”. Normally, when following a person, it is written as “follow”, but here it is written as “arrive and go” to indicate the scene where the train arrives at the station and gets off. .. At night on the Galactic Railroad, their journey is a recollection, and getting off is a separation. You and I have finished the journey around memories, and I, who is left alone, thinks of you again, “I’m going over there all the time.” Thank you for reading.”

And it’s a wrap! Night Journey is a song that shows life of becoming an adult, forgetting childhood memories, and kicking the bucket (a euphemism). The two characters remain anonymous, but it’s better that way so we can listen to the song freely–we can interpret it in various ways. Yorushika makes small things in life be expressed so creatively in their songs.
