Star Trek: The Original Series (Blu-ray)
As Star Trek: The Original Series was remastered, starting in 2006 , to become the TOS "Remastered" series , it was well suited to be translated into the Blu-ray Disc format. After a false start in the HD DVD format in 2007 , the first season of The Original Series was among the first to be released in 2009 in the new HD format.
The remastered releases represented the very first time that actual, contemporary behind-the-scenes Original Series footage was included in the special features. These stemmed from the collection of former Original Series performer William Blackburn who had shot them on personal title, while he was on-set. No live contemporary behind-the-scenes footage had ever been featured on any of the previously released home media formats or (officially) featured anywhere else. They all had to do with contemporary still photographs. The reason for this was very simple – the studio did not possess any, not even the Star Trek "blooper reel", as it had failed to maintain ownership over these back in 1967, due to then-Executive Producer Gene Roddenberry 's machinations. In 1996, it was divulged that Roddenberry had illegally cleaned out the fireproof vaults of the studio of each and every scrap of film of this footage, such as deleted scenes, outtakes, and behind-the-scenes footage, for personal gain as merchandise to be sold by his company Lincoln Enterprises through mail order and/or at Star Trek conventions during the late 1960s and early 1970s. ( Inside Star Trek: The Real Story , 1997, pp. 400-401)
Being privately shot however, Blackburn's footage remained outside the purview of Roddenberry's scavenging. His footage was remastered as well for the occasion.
Nonetheless, much of the material Roddenberry had acquired back in the day was discovered to be still in existence, and Roddenberry Entertainment (as Lincoln Enterprises was now known) contracted with CBS Consumer Products to have most of this material released to the general public after all, the result of which eventually becoming the 2016 Star Trek: The Original Series - The Roddenberry Vault three-disc Blu-ray release.

Star Trek in Blu-ray! Better than the original videos!
This is Blu-ray not DVD. So it has 1080P resolution which is better than the original TV series! It has both "Enhanced" & "Regular" versions for every episode, and I really like the enhanced versions! It has a nice case for every disc! Also it has behind the scenes for creators, cast, workers, and stories, which is also quite entertaining beyond the episodes. Every disc has a master operating program to be able to select what you want to watch! If you like the original Star Trek series, this is definitely what you should buy, instead of watching them on Netflix! :) I was about 10 years old when the series started, and I think Gene Roddenberry was a great human trying to show how all different heritages of people should work together! Get them before they are gone!!!!
Says it all.
Love the new special effects on the remastered versions. Gives the old Trek new life. The series also has the original aired versions of the show. Absolutely great!

TOS Blu-Ray audio questions/ issues
Discussion in ' Star Trek - The Original & Animated Series ' started by billsantos , Mar 21, 2010 .

Once again, thanks to all those who helped with the video questions I had. I'm basically content to watch TOS in 4:3 format with the black edges. I can stretch it, but I do prefer native format. Now on to another matter.... audio. The biggest audio problem I'm having is trying to get the dialogue to be at the same level as the music/ effects (or nearly so). Much of the time, the music is so loud after turning the audio up to hear the dialogue, that I'm afraid the speakers will be damaged. And many times I have trouble hearing the dialogue. I've tried all the audio settings available which includes standard, dynamic, and clear voice. Of all of these, only clear voice levels the audio somewhat better but the bass is severely curtailed. Appreciate any suggestions here. Only other thing I find with audio settings on these Blu-Rays is that I have to turn it almost to max, to at least 80% of the maximum volume available. This is even with a preset audio offset. Are your Trek Blu-Rays also this way or is there some adjustment I'm overlooking? BTW, all audio/ video is channeled by HDMI cable in my system. Now this really isn't a settings issue, but something I've noticed. When the DVD's first came out, I noticed that there was an extra, lower octave present with any of the loud sound effects. Like if a phaser fires, instead of just the normal phaser sound, I also hear a slightly fainter sound of the phaser an octave below the normal sound. I only hear this on the loudest sound effects and have often wondered if it is some kind of audio error they couldn't eliminate. I thought it might be only a DVD issue, but I hear it now on the Blu Rays too. Thoughts? Thanks to all in advance.
Just a little update. Last night I noticed the Blu Ray player had settings for audio also, so I set the audio compression for maximum hoping that the overall volume would now be much more level. However, With both the TV and Blu Ray player at maximum compression, I still experience very loud differences at times so much so that I continue to be concerned about the speakers. Dialogue is still kind of weak too. Still appreciate any thoughts and/or suggestions.

Best thing I've been able to do regarding the volume is change to the Mono track.
NickintheATL Lieutenant Commander Red Shirt
My biggest complaints are about those mono audio tracks (which I do prefer): Some episodes are obviously a mixdown of the older 5.1 mix. Other episodes are a mixdown of the new 7.1 mix, with the new theme recording (which I despise!) Also, some of the audio in The Menagerie, Part II sounds very, very bad. Not to mention that the music cues are still wrong, as they were in the 5.1 mix on the DVDs. Can't they just get it right for once?
I'll try going to mono only and see what happens. They didn't seem to toy much with the unaired WNM... and the audio was a lot easier to keep leveled. I agree that there has been a certain amount of manipulation of the audio tracks. Even if I switch back to non-enhanced video, the audio tracks very often end up as the newer remixes which I don't like as much as the original.
Looks like I may have been wrong about the audio in one respect: when set to original the audio I'm hearing appears to be unaltered. Apparently they really did use the mono tracks with no enhancement. It is only when the enhanced option is chosen that the surround sound comes into effect. Great news for audiophiles like myself who has been on the search for TOS in original unaltered audio format since the VHS releases. I also understand that the audio encoding format on Blu Rays in general is truly lossless which is even better. IMO, I always thought the audio on the DVD's sacrificed too much quality (and it was lossy encoding), even though fairly dynamic due to Dolby NR.

It was something the reviewers brought up as a negative, and something I've experienced - namely that when listenting to the 7.1 'TrueHD' audio tracks, the mix is sub-optimal; amd generally the overall mix is low.
As to the audio, how do you tell? On the back of the Blu Ray casing it says "Audio: English 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio" and underneath of this "English", "Spanish", and "French" "Mono 2.0". Based on this, I was under the impression that everything was in DTS-HD. "Dolby Digital" is mentioned but in a category by itself with no subheadings.
22 Stars Commodore Commodore
Many 5.1 Amplifiers will let you independently set your speakers to custom levels, so you can boost the center channel that way and/or decreas the relative output from your surround sound speakers. I find it should only take a few minutes with a good diagnostic or sample sound sample running in a loop. I would much rather sacrifice a bit of the surround effect, for crisp clear dialogue in the center speaker.
But they aren't all the original mono, as the main title music is wrong on some of the episodes. That counts as an alteration.

- Set ten years before the original series, Discovery follows the crew of USS Discovery on a mission through space and time.
- While Discovery may be ending, new Star Trek shows like Prodigy and Strange New Worlds are on the horizon for fans to enjoy.
Now that Star Trek: Discovery 's five-year mission is complete, its final season is coming to Blu-ray. And if you've missed the previous seasons' releases, good news - the complete series will be released in a new Blu-ray box set. Both sets will arrive this summer, as per TrekCore.com .
The season 5 set will include all ten episodes of the Paramount+ science fiction series, as well as a number of special features. Those include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, a gag reel, and a number of featurettes, including spotlights on character development, the voyage of season 5, and on the character of Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ). It can also be ordered in a collectible Steelbook case. The Complete Series set will include everything in the season 5 set, plus the contents and special features of seasons 1-4, for a total of 65 episodes and over fifteen hours of bonus features. It will also include a bonus disc with "never-before seen interviews and behind the scenes footage". Both sets will be available on August 27.
What Is 'Star Trek: Discovery'?
Initially set ten years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series , Star Trek: Discovery takes place on the USS Discovery , a Starfleet ship with an experimental "spore drive" that allows it to travel much faster than the rest of the fleet. Over the course of the first two seasons, the ship and her crew take on the warlike Klingons , the twisted Mirror Universe , and a malevolent artificial intelligence unleashed by shady Starfleet intelligence agency Section 31. In the course of their battle against the latter, the ship was thrown centuries into the future, emerging in a 32nd century in which the Federation had been shattered by a cataclysm known as The Burn. The crew soon adjusted to their new home, where they solved the mystery of The Burn and staved off a galaxy-wide disaster by making first contact with a bizarre new alien species. The show's fifth and final season saw the ship on a planet-hopping race against time and the malevolent Breen, as they attempted to discover the ancient secret behind life itself.
Watch on Paramount+
Although Discovery has come to an end, there are numerous other new Star Trek shows on the horizon. The long-awaited second season of Star Trek: Prodigy is set to hit Netflix on July 1, while the third season of Discovery spinoff Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has completed filming and should be released next year. The Paramount+-original film Star Trek: Section 31 , starring Michelle Yeoh , is expected to be released this year, as well.
Star Trek: Discovery
Taking place almost a decade before Captain Kirk's Enterprise, the USS Discovery charts a course to uncover new worlds and life forms.
The Blu-ray sets of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 and Star Trek: Discovery - The Complete Series will arrive on August 27, 2024. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, and watch the trailer for Discovery 's fifth season below.

We will get it in a year as a new release :)
Of course it’s Burnham by herself in the artwork.
Sigh. After 5 seasons, do people still not know that the series… from its conception… was supposed to be about Burnham and HER journey. That was the original concept.
They know. It’s just that their only personality trait is being an a$$hole.
Maybe 7 or 8 years ago but not now. The official synopses each season talks about “the crew of the USS Discovery”
The overall five season arc of DSC is really Michael Burnham’s redemption arc. Like it or not, it seems appropriate packaging to me.
If Sonequa wasn’t a part of this show, there is, NO WAY, it would have lasted 5 seasons.
Season 1-3 synopsis: Follow the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer, Michael Burnham, who learns that to truly understand all things alien, she must first understand herself.
Season 4 synopsis: Season four of Star Trek: Discovery finds Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery facing a threat unlike any they’ve ever encountered. With Federation and non-Federation worlds alike feeling the impact, they must confront the unknown and work together to ensure a hopeful future for all. Season 5 synopsis:
The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery finds Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well … dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.
Don’t know about you, but it certainly sounds like a focus on Burnham’s journey to me.
I’m old enough to remember when the show first came out. They never said that. That many people think they did, or claim they did, is odd but telling.
Well we do know before even casting was announced that “the lead and focus of the show would be a women who is not in command of the ship”.
“We’ve had six characters from the Captains point of view”, “putting a different character front and center will give the story a richer context”.
So while true what the earlier poster stated isn’t verbatim what was said from very near the get go. This is from Fuller, who also in part of the announcement states that” this is her journey”.
And if that doesn’t give you the hint that the show is focused on Burnham, and that the bulk of the show is her story. Well watching even the first season should make it absolutely clear.
Point of view is not the same as only important.
You’re old enough to remember seven (or even eight) years ago!? Well, grandpa/grandma, they did indeed say that. Repeatedly.
That many people think that they didn’t (or claim that they didn’t) is odd but telling.
https://www.slashfilm.com/545911/star-trek-discovery/ (one of multiple sources, including Entertainment Weekly)
The part about me being old enough was obviously a joke. We do live in a world where people think history began ten minutes ago, sadly.
But I think you misunderstand me: I remember full well what they said about the main character of the series. (I remember that it was supposed to be Number One at first.) But “main character” does not mean “character around whom *everything* revolves.” Every Trek series, every sci-fi series, has a main character, or maybe two or three. Discovery ended up taking that to a ridiculous level.
Look, I really like the finale- I like the whole season- and I’m not going to compare it to Enterprise’s finale just because of the tacked-on last scene, but to have Burnham as, essentially, the *only* character in the scene *when the other actors were all there and being filmed* really colored my impression of the whole thing.
You’re old enough to remember seven (or even eight) years ago!? Well, grandpa/grandma, they did indeed say that. Repeatedly.
That many people think that they didn’t (or claim that they didn’t) is odd but telling.
This site doesn’t like links, but there are multiple sources from 2016, including Slashfilm and Entertainment Weekly, quoting Fuller and others.
I don’t think people would be this triggered by Burnham being the central focus of the show if she was a male character.
Oh, most definitely. I completely agree with you. They wouldn’t have any issues if Burnham was a white male character.
We just wanted all the characters to have there own episode, would have liked to explore Tilly’s character more including detma and Owo Ect
Or simply an interesting well written character?
Archer was a white male.
We’re not talking about Archer. We are talking about Burnham…if she was a white male, people wouldn’t have a problem with her.
It’s nothing to do with colour or if she’s male or female, most wanted to explore the other characters more.
Yeah, it has everything to do with her colour and gender. And the show, before it was even cast, was about her. Not the crew. Burnham. That was the premise of the show. It was not like it was a secret. If you wanted a show about the crew, then that would be SNW where they focus on giving the crew stories. Discovery was a show about Burnham’s journey.
The regular Blu-Ray/DVD is the season five cast poster.
Awesome i have bought every steelbook release so far and can’t wait to get the S5 steelbook. I do hope we get a 4K release at some point.
So I already pre-ordered the S5 standalone Blu-Ray steelbook. Of course there would be an added bonus disc on the complete series set … I don’t really like “complete series sets” because there’s almost always disc damage. But, being a completist I ordered that set as well just for the disc. Take my money Paramount/CBS.
I will likely do the same.
It is really disappointing that the only show in 4K is Strange New Worlds. On UHD disc.
Now that I have a 4K tv I want TOS in 4k, and I’m still waiting for 2k Deep Space Nine and Voyager.
Loved Season Five. Thanks trekmovie for the announcement and the links.
Since the Prodigy debacle happened with P+ taking it off the site, it gave me a big appreciation for physical media I haven’t had in over a decade. So I started to buy all the movies and shows since last year and now own all the classic shows (TOS-ENT) and all 13 movies. I have been holding off buying any of the newer shows until they have ended. I won’t lie, I’m conflicted on getting Discovery because I just haven’t been much of a fan as much as I wanted to be. I did like the last season but still highly mixed on it overall.
But I’ve gone this far so it looks like I will be picking it up. I’ve turned into a completest lol.
The Blu-ray link goes to Lower Decks season four.
Is there a chance they will include the Disco Star Trek Shorts in the complete set? If not, this would be a significant oversight, as many of these shorts are crucial to the Discovery storyline and legacy. For instance, without watching ‘Calypso,’ viewers will never understand the full context of the final episode!
Let’s hope so!
