Further details about the upcoming LP are yet to emerge, though a press release confirms it will be released at some point next year.

Back in March, Edgar Wright’s documentary on the duo, The Sparks Brothers,  won the BandLab NME Award for  Best Music Film .

It was announced earlier this month that a film musical written by Ron and Russell Mael is currently in development . Titled X Crucior, the movie has been billed as an original musical epic.

Sparks - announce two massive uk shows.

Sparks will play the iconic Royal Albert Hall

Sparks - Aka brothers Ron and Russell Mael have just announced two very special shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th May 2023. Having recently teased both a new album and tour for 2023, the Los Angeles brothers have revealed the first dates.  Levels of interest in the work of Sparks are at heights unsurpassed in their 50+ year career, with the ultimate cult band now centre stage in the full beam of the spotlight. Having played an extensive world tour in 2022, Sparks’   renaissance continues with the announcement of the band’s largest headline UK shows to date.

“Since we first started playing music, the Royal Albert Hall has been the pinnacle of British music venues for us and a place we’ve always aspired to play. These shows are a dream come true!” - Sparks

Most people, with even a passing acquaintance with Sparks, will know the basics by now. How Californian brothers Ron and Russell Mael, both students at UCLA , began making music together in the late Sixties, originally under the name Halfnelson . How their  Top of the Pops (TOTP)   debut with  'This town ain't big enough for both of Us'  stunned a generation and nearly scored them a UK No.1. How their career moved through many phases, including (but not limited to) Art Rock, Glam, Big Band Swing, Electro-Disco, New Wave and SynthPop , taking in collaborations with Todd Rundgren, Les Rita Mitsouko, Tony Visconti Franz Ferdinand and Giorgio Moroder.

How keyboardist and songwriter Ron's intricate staccato arrangements combine with the hysteria pitch falsetto in which Russell delivers his brother's always on-point lyrics. How Ron's stillness and stern, intimidating visage contrasts onstage with Russell's hyperactivity. How their popularity has spiked unpredictably in different territories at different times: Britain, France, Germany, Scandinavia, Japan, and their homeland the United States . And how the influence of “the greatest band you've never heard of”, or “your favourite band's favourite band”, has been recognised by successive generations of artists from Joy Division to Duran Duran to Depeche Mode to Bjork to Beck to The Darkness and beyond.

Sparks at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

Sparks review – it’s impossible not to be swept up in their manic delight

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall The Mael brothers’ career-spanning set pairs the genuinely moving with the flagrantly ridiculous – and their refusal to play things straight still has audiences dancing in the aisles

B olshie glam rockers, synthpop pioneers, a quasi-classical comeback at the turn of the millennium – the one thing Sparks have never been is understated. Even so, the setlist for their new world tour is considerable in its breadth.

Even the band’s soundtrack to 2021 musical Annette is represented via grandiose opener So May We Start . Arriving amid chiming bells and flashes of light, the Mael brothers settle immediately into that old dynamic: Russell the flamboyant frontman, strutting around the stage in his tailored black and red suit, his face still boyish in its glee. His mustachioed, bespectacled brother Ron is his opposite, hilariously po-faced behind his keyboard – the Roland logo cheekily misspelled as Ronald.

Songs such as the bouncy 80s pop of Eaten By the Monster of Love have dated, yet the band’s charm remains undimmed. Early career stomper Beaver O’Lindy and 2000’s techno excursion Balls are flagrantly ridiculous, but Russell leans into that fact with a flourish of his hands or a leaping karate kick. Later, Ron steps out from the keys and lets his steely expression slip momentarily into a manic grin as he delivers a gloriously gangly running man.

Timed to perfection like all great double acts, the surreal moments also intensify the power of the more earnest moments by contrast. Passionate closing epic All That , for instance, is genuinely moving. There are proper musical thrills to be had, too. Ron’s synth rumbles like an avalanche on their new album’s title track ; Angst in My Pants is still a manic delight. The momentum only really sags with the meandering Escalator, the weakest of the multiple new songs in the set.

When they roll out the hits, however, it’s impossible not to be swept up. Mid-90s house excursion When Do I Get to Sing “My Way” has the hall on their feet, then the still-entrancing The Number One Song in Heaven has security hoisting away fans who start dancing in the aisles. This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us follows, as does all out bedlam.

It’d be easy for Sparks to rest entirely on moments like this, a greatest hits set befitting their status, but their refusal to play things straight has always been their biggest strength. Immediately after that run of classics, they puncture any ideas of becoming a legacy act with a knowingly daft chanson from their new record, Gee, That Was Fun. It’s a sentiment their audience clearly share.

Sparks are touring the UK until 30 May.

Sparks’ Busy 2023 Includes Tour, New Album

sparks tour uk 2023

Sparks 2023 (Photo: Munachi Osegbu; used with permission)

Sparks – brothers Ron Mael  and Russell Mael – have announced a major world tour that will see the band playing some of the biggest venues in their more than 50-year history. The run is in conjunction with their 26th studio album, The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte , due May 26, 2023, via Island Records. The tour begins in May with dates in the U.K. and Europe. They’ll then visit North American beginning June 27 at New York’s Beacon Theatre and then continue through a hometown finale in Los Angeles on July 16. Tickets are available  here .

The album is described by the brothers as a record that is “as bold and uncompromising as anything we did back then, or for that matter, anytime throughout our career.” The title track, featuring Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett, was released on March 3.

“We met Cate Blanchett in Paris at the César Awards last year,” say the Mael brothers, “little knowing that a year later, one of the great actors of our time (and a splendid person!) would graciously consent to lending her bootie-shaking skills to the first video from our new album, ‘The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte.’ Dreams really do come true. We will sleep well tonight knowing that forever we can say we co-starred in a film with Cate Blanchett!” Pre-order  The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte in the U.S. here and the U.K. here .

A second track was released on April 21. The musical account of the actress Veronica Lake, and her peek-a-boo hairstyle, displays Sparks’ ability to craft intricately detailed stories into perfect three-minute pop masterpieces.

A 22-hour-old baby is the protagonist of the catchy punk-pop of “Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is,” the third single to be released.

From the Jan. 30 tour announcement: Most people, with even a passing acquaintance with Sparks , will know the basics by now. How Californian brothers Ron and Russell Mael, both students at UCLA, began making music together in the late Sixties, originally under the name Halfnelson. How their Top Of the Pops debut with “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us” nearly scored them a U.K. #1. How their career moved through many phases, including (but not limited to) art rock, glam, big band swing, electro-disco, new wave and synthpop.

How keyboardist and songwriter Ron’s intricate staccato arrangements combine with the acrobatic vocals in which Russell delivers his brother’s always-on-point lyrics. How Ron’s stillness and stern, intimidating visage contrasts onstage with Russell’s hyperactivity. How their popularity has spiked unpredictably in different territories at different times: Britain, France, Germany, Scandinavia, Japan, and their homeland, the United States. And how the influence of “the greatest band you’ve never heard of,” or “your favorite band’s favorite band,” has been recognized by successive generations of artists from Joy Division to Duran Duran to Depeche Mode to Bjork to Beck and beyond.

Their lauded career-spanning 2021 documentary film, The Sparks Brothers , directed by Edgar Wright ( Shaun Of the Dead , Hot Fuzz , Baby Driver ), brought them a new awareness.

Sparks’ 2021 film musical Annette , directed by Leos Carax and starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, has been showered with awards, especially in France where the film won three Lumières Awards and five César Awards, including “Best Original Music” for the pair. In addition, the film’s “So May We Start” was shortlisted for “Best Original Song” at the 94th Academy Awards. Focus Features have recently announced plans to develop X-Crucior , a new musical epic written by Ron and Russell.

Metal Hammer journalist Alec Chillingworth gave The Other One a glowing 8/10 score .

“Now they’re not shoved down your gullet on every festival stage or website available, it’s easier to appreciate [Babymetal] for what they are: an experiment that’s gotten out of hand,” wrote Chillingworth.

“ The Other One is nigh-on no-filler, and unquestionably their strongest compendium of delirium to date.”

All the surprise songs Taylor Swift has performed on the Eras Tour in 2024

Taylor Swift officially kicks off her Eras Tour in the UK this week - and it’s fair to say Swiftie mania is well and truly taking over the country.

The American singer will begin the UK leg with three shows in Edinburgh from June 7 to 9, followed by another three dates in Liverpool's Anfield Stadium from June 13 to 15. She will then head to Cardiff on June 18 before arriving in London for three big shows at Wembley Stadium from June 21-23.

As the name suggests, the show will take fans through the different eras of her career, from her self-titled 2006 debut up to The Tortured Poets Department, which was released earlier this year.

Alongside performing some of her biggest hits, such as Shake It Off, I Knew You Were Trouble and Karma, those who have been following the tour since it began in America early last year will know by now that the singer has also performed a couple of special songs at each show.

Boxing News: Zhilei Zhang Sparks Deontay Wilder for 5 vs. 5 Shutout

Mathew riddle | jun 1, 2024.

sparks tour uk 2023

Zhilei Zhang has KO'd Deontay Wilder at the Queensbury vs. Matchroom '5 vs. 5' even in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

5 vs. 5 Results: Daniel Dubois Demolishes Filip Hrgovic, Eyes Anthony Joshua Fight

It was a slow affair as both fighters landed near single-digit punches per round until Wilder pushed the pace in round five and was punished brutally. Zhang clipped 'The Bronze Bomber' with a check right hook, which spun him around. Dazed and confused, Wilder lost focus, and Zhang clubbed him from behind with a huge right hand, dropping him to the canvas for the KO.

ZHILEI ZHANG JUST FLATTENED DEONTAY WILDER WOW 🤯 pic.twitter.com/3uhc0wHjjC — Happy Punch (@HappyPunch) June 2, 2024

Both sides were incredibly tentative. Zhang plodded forward; his presence was intimidating next to Wilder's smaller frame. Wilder was slightly more active than his losing effort against Joseph Parker in his last fight, but he still appeared apprehensive after Zhang's power. Unfortunately, this loss will most likely spell a retirement for Wilder, who is now 1-4 in his last few performances.

5 vs. 5 Results: Dmitry Bivol Obliterates Malik Zinad, Artur Beterbiev Fight Rebooked

Zhang's KO marks a clean sweep for Queensbury boxing, as every fighter from the promotion defeated their Matchroom counterpart; $3M was later awarded to Frank Warren for the victory.

As for his next opponent, Zhang didn't name any names. Daniel Dubois secured the interim IBF title in the co-main event of the night, and should have a showdown with Anthony Joshua later this year. Other names Zhang could consider include Agit Kabayel, Jared Anderson, or Martin Bakole.

Recognized as one of Australian’s fastest rising DJs, Will Sparks has built a reputation for himself as an artist who has a deep understanding of the current cultural climate and through his technocracy has been able to both cater to it and shape it through bold experimentation and intuition.

By the time Sparks hit age 20 he was already a signature figure in his home country’s electronic music scene. Sparks has since progressed on a world wide scale level, steadily setting a stir in the global EDM scene. His technique has gained a strong footing and though its shape is well defined, it continues to fluctuate with the rapid trends of electronic music and never ceases to surprise.

On 22 October 2012, Sparks released the single “Drop That” with collaborator Zoolanda. The track took a maximalist approach pushing the volume exponentially, but when one might expect to hear the whole mix collapse into an implosive crescendo underlined by rumbling of near inaudible bass tones, it instead tapers off teasing the listener with a collage of displaced vocal glitches and muted drum pulses. It is Spark’s willingness to question the tired trends in electronic music that makes him such an enigmatic character in this music scene.

July of 2013 saw the release of the single “Bring it Back”, another joint effort, but this time with producer Joel Fletcher. The single was issued by Netherlands base label “Ones to Watch”.

Sparks put out another Scandinavian release with 2014’s single “Catch”, which was issued in Sweden by Sony Music. This track still embraced many of the qualities of house music, but stepped away from the electro based style, stepping into a more progressive techno structure.

Additionally Sparks has been noted for frequently dominating the Beatport charts. His track “Ah Yeah!”, which in many ways has been credited for defining the Melbourne bounce genre peaked at No. 3 on the Beatport overall chart and his remix of the Lil Wayne & Christina Milan track “Hello” took the No.1 spot. Sparks’ single “Viking” made a huge splash amongst the general public, raking in 40K listens in a 24 hr time span. Sparks’ has not only proven himself to be a fan favorite within the EDM scene, he has also won the respect of various publications such as intermix, which voted him number 2 on their list for the “Top 50 DJs”.

Sparks has played multiple sold out gigs at some of the world’s hippest clubs like the Pacha in New York, Studio Paris in Chicago, XL in Las Vegas, and has also played large scale festivals like Goodlife Festival, Future Music Festival, and SummerDayze alongside acts like Avicii, Calvin Harris, and Chuckie. In 2014 Sparks released his highly anticipated studio EP “Another Land”.

Live reviews

Australian DJ Will Sparks is making some serious waves within his own country and beyond. His EDM makes you want to party hard and his signature electro-house twists on his tunes are insanely cool. Will Sparks is certainly a rising star and one to watch over the coming years. His sound is going places.

Will has DJ’d in venues throughout the world and is a staple at festivals throughout Australia. His energy and perfect crowd-reading skills mean that he is getting noticed elsewhere and invited to festivals across the globe. Will’s personality and music really suit festival life – he’s a total crowd pleaser and it’s amazing watching giant hoards of people jump up and down in sync.

“Ah Yeah!”, “The Viking” and “Catch” are all massive crowd pleasers which you will remember as standouts from a Will Sparks show. On the decks, Will is totally having the time of his life and he has a cheeky energy that is infectious. When will jumps, you jump. That’s the rule. And if you’re not at one of his gigs to enjoy yourself then you definitely came for the wrong reasons.

Melbourne DJ Will Sparks has already created a live show that far surpasses his mere three years experience on the electro and dance circuit. At just 22 years old, he is considered to be the country's fastest rising DJ star and his reputation is soon to go global should the consistency of his early releases stay consistent.

With just an EP and a string of singles under his belt currently, the show he performs is staggering with well timed visual elements and impressive lighting displays to create real moments for the hundreds of patrons dancing at the mercy of his decks. He moves constantly; mixing, twisting and merging sounds and tracks into succinct dance marathons whilst the audience roars for drops as the tracks build and build and illuminate rain drops fall over the stage. It is one huge night of dance and electro and from an artist who is still taking his first steps on the live circuit, the potential here is just immeasurable.

Caitlin Clark hits final-minute 3 to lift Fever past Sparks for first win of season

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 24: Caitlin Clark #22 of the Indiana Fever reacts to a three point basket during the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Sparks at Crypto.com Arena on May 24, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. After the Indiana Fever ’s lead whittled down to two in the final minute, Caitlin Clark had the ball in her hands, ready to ensure the Indiana Fever escaped a sixth consecutive defeat to start the season.

The rookie sized up Los Angeles Sparks wing Kia Nurse, crossed the ball over to her left, and stepped back for her trademark 3-pointer from the left wing. Splash. Clark stuck her tongue out as she celebrated for fellow Iowa native Ashton Kutcher and his family sitting courtside, then she struck the Jordan shrug on her way back down the court.

“I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but I seriously think that every shot that I take is going to go in,” Clark said.

It was only her second triple of the game, and her 11th point during a night of offensive struggles, but it was the dagger the Fever needed to win their first game 78-73 for Clark’s first professional victory.

Clark finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists, as Indiana breathed a sigh of relief before facing the two-time defending champions in Las Vegas on the second night of a back-to-back. Kelsey Mitchell paced the Fever with 18 points as Aliyah Boston added 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Indiana improved to 1-5 with the win while Los Angeles fell to 1-3.

Indiana tailoring rotation to match Clark’s skillset

At practice in Los Angeles on Thursday, Clark noted one of the adjustments the Fever had to make was playing at a different pace than last year. To achieve that, Indiana coach Christie Sides has had to change her rotation six games in to achieve more ball and player movement.

She moved Katie Lou Samuelson to the bench in favor of Kristy Wallace in the Fever’s previous game against the Seattle Storm , and Temi Fagbenle started the second half in place of NaLyssa Smith .

What Wallace and Fagbenle bring to the court is clear: an understanding of how to play with Clark. Fagbenle has been a ball of energy since opening night as she returns to the WNBA after a five-year hiatus. She brings effort on the glass, runs the floor in transition, and makes herself available for the ball at all times.

Wallace also has picked up on the idea that when Clark is in the game, running toward the basket will yield positive results. Wallace is an active cutter who also sprints in early offense, making her the beneficiary of Clark’s outlet passes.

Fagbenle and Wallace were the recipients of six of Clark’s 8 assists, and Fagbenle was a plus-15 in her minutes, leading Indiana in the category.

Fever remain comeback kids

Sides, Boston and Clark credited Indiana’s morale as it weathered a tough start but showed an ability to fight back in games, even if those comebacks hadn’t resulted in wins.

“We’re always fighting from being down, and that’s a really tough position to put your teammates in, especially the ones that are coming off the bench and trying to give really solid minutes,” Clark said.

The Fever still found themselves down 11 points in the first half, prompting Sides’ lineup switch at the break. The five-player unit of Clark, Wallace, Fagbenle, Mitchell and Boston started the third quarter on an 11-0 run, erasing the deficit immediately.

The Sparks battled and pushed ahead by another four points, but Indiana still built a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter.

L.A. pulled to within three points with less than three minutes to play, and that was when Clark finally dialed in from long range. She had missed her first seven 3-pointers but found paydirt with 2:27 remaining, the precursor to her final blow that sealed the game.

Defense finally came to play

Indiana had surrendered at least 85 points in each of the first five games of the season, a disturbing trend for a team that finished 11th in defensive rating in 2023. The Fever were last in the league entering Friday’s game but limited the Sparks to 28 second-half points.

They kept L.A. off the offensive glass and forced 14 turnovers in the final 20 minutes, allowing Indiana to own the possession battle.

Whether it was Samuelson standing up Dearica Hamby in the paint, or the Fever perimeter defenders forcing Lexie Brown into drives rather than jumpers, they knew the scouting report and forced the Sparks into disadvantageous positions.

Indiana limited the Sparks to only six free-throw attempts in the second half after a parade to the line in the first. Indiana’s offense wasn’t sterling by any means, but it was good enough for the Fever to score 19 points off turnovers and 14 in transition.

“These guys are fighting, they’re fighting for each other, they’re fighting for us,” Sides said. “The way they fought in that second half, especially defensively, just proud of their effort.”
