1. Manali to Kaza – If you are taking Spiti valley road trip from the Manali side, then there are two routes you can do. One is from Manali-Gulaba-Rohtang Pass- Gramphu and then join Kaza Manali highway or you can take Manali-Atul Tunnel-Koksar-Gramphu and Kaza Manali highway. Manali to Gramphu road conditions are good on both routes, but the actual fun starts when you hit the Kaza Manali highway and you will be welcomed with a lot of slush and gravel roads with multiple water crossings. The roads from Gramphu till Kaza most of the stretch is off-road with a lot of water crossings, but 30kms before Kaza you will get Tarmac Road and it will be such a great relief after a bumpy ride. 70% of the road is off-road and 30% is the decent road.

2. Chandratal Road condition- Chandratal road condition is in bad shape since there is no proper infrastructure has been implemented till now and it remains isolated & offbeat. 100% off-road

3. Kaza-Key Monastery-Kibber-Chicham bridge-Langza-Komic-Hikkim road condition- Most of these roads are uphill with single-lane mountain roads, so be careful while riding on these terrains, as it is a high altitude mountain road and very narrow with deep valleys on the side. 80% good roads and 20% Off roads.

4. Kaza-Tabo-Dhankar Monastery- Most of the road is in decent condition but there are few patches off-road, Dhankar monastery road is completely uphill with a single lane. 80% decent road, 20% off-road.

5. Dhankar – Mud village – Most of the road to Mud village is tarmac with few bad stretches, 90% decent road

6. Mud Village – Gue Mummy – Nako lake – Most of the roads are uphill and high altitude. Few stretches in Gue mummy road are single and very narrow, but manageable. 80% good road

7. Nako lake – Kalpa- Sangla- Chitkul – After Nako lake, most of the roads will be descending towards Kinnaur valley. While riding down the roads are very narrow with a lot of turns & twists. While entering Kinnaur valley there is a stretch with a Shooting stone area and one needs to be very careful while crossing this patch. After crossing the Karcham dam one needs to take left towards Sangla valley and Chitkul, the road is very narrow and steep till Sangla. But after reaching Sangla, the road till Chitkul is in decent condition with some rough patch in-between.

8. Sangla to Sarahan – After exploring Chitkul during Manali to Spiti valley's bike trip, one can enjoy riding to Sarahan. Most of the roads are in decent condition, in between there is construction work is going on on the Hindustan Tibet highway. To reach Sarahan one needs to cut off from the main highway take a diversion to reach Sarahan, it will be a single-lane mountain road with breath-taking views of the lower Himalayas.

9. Sarahan-Narkanda- Hatu peak- Most of the roads are tarmac till Narkanda, one needs to take a diversion towards Hatu peak from Narkanda, the road to Hatu peak is very steep and narrow, which is covered with dense pine trees and forest on both sides. It’s very difficult to ride if it is raining, as the road becomes more slippery and wet.

How to reach Spiti valley – Routes

There are 2 routes to reach Spiti valley from Delhi/Chandigarh.

1. Route no 1: Delhi/Chandigarh – Manali – Chandratal-Kunzum La pass- Losar-Kaza-Tabo-Nako-Kalpa-Narkanda-Shimla-Delhi/Chandigarh

2. Route no 2: Delhi/Chandigarh – Shimla-Narkanda-Kalpa-Nako-Tabo-Kaza-Chandratal-Manali.

One can start from the Manali side and end from the Shimla side or vice versa.

Clothing – carry riding jacket, riding pants (If not good quality Knee Guard, winter riding gloves, balaclava or face mask, thermals, socks, high ankle boots or gumboots which are economical and reliable, winter wear hoodies, jeans and T-shirts and lastly waterproof or rain gear jackets.

Accessories: Sunscreen lotion SPF 50 and above, Sunglasses, Skull cap, warm gloves & woollen socks during the night

Daily use packs: Face cream, lip balm (always keep in your pocket), petroleum jelly, cold cream (Himalaya or Nivia), Tooth Brush, Toothpaste, liquid soap, toilet paper, shampoo, towel, deo, and waste bin covers to dispose of any unwanted things.

Short bites: It's essential to carry a few short eats or eatables like dry fruits, chocolates, energy bars, and water bottles

Altitude mountain sickness

Altitude sickness is one of the most common problems that occur during Travelling to Spiti valley, because of its altitude. A common cause of AMS is due to lack of oxygen and our body won’t get acclimatize to that altitude so easily. Minor symptoms of AMS are headaches, vomit sensation, fatigue, shortness of breath, and giddiness. Severe symptoms will be like shortness of breath even you are sitting or not doing any activity, severe vomiting, and inability to walk. A journey to Himalaya is feeling which cannot be expressed in words. This spiti valley road trip is done mostly out of enthusiasm, to see the celestial lands, to know the challenges in riding.

The motorbike tour including unlimited fun and challenge to the one of remotest region of Himachal Pradesh via Kinnaur Spiti valley. This tour involves visiting remote valleys, villages and crossing over high mountain passed providing spectacular view of snow capped mountains, rugged terrain and thousand years old monasteries. But if compared to Ladakh, Spiti valley is still very harsh and desolate. It takes a certain amount of madness to drive on these uninviting, mesmerizing landscapes.

The desert mountain valley high in the Himalayas is one of the most unexplored places in India, and also one of the most picture perfect. You will be spellbound by the rugged mountain terrains, gushing streams, high altitude lakes and the beautiful Spiti River. The Spiti- Kinnaur route or National Highway-11, also popularly known as the Hindustan Tibet Road makes for one of the greatest road-trips in Asia.

You will simply love to take this route if you are in love with adventure. The valley is home to some of the kindest and friendliest people in India, who with their warmth and welcoming nature will make you want to come back again.

Short Itinerary

Day 1:- Manali – Jibhi

Day 2:- jibhi – sarahan, day 3:- sarahan – sangla, day 4:- sangla – chitkul – kalpa, day 5:- kalpa – nako – tabo, day 6:- tabo – dhankar – kaza   , day 7:- kaza local sightseeing (key kibber – langza – komik – hikkim), day 8:- kaza – chandartal, day 9:- chandartal – manali  .

Today morning we will start our journey to Jibhi village. We will take diversion from Aut to Saraj valley. Jibhi is one of the favourite backpacker destinations mostly famous for fishing and is covered in thick pine forest. Jibhi is known for enchanting sceneries of Great Himalayan National park and photogenic places. May be that’s why foreigners make their home for months before they continue their journey to upper Himalayan region.

Today morning we will start our ride to Jalori pass(3120m). Jibhi village is the base of the summit Jalori Pass. Sharp curves start from Jibhi and are very steep till which reach the pass. Jalori pass connects the Kullu district and Shimla district and its hight altitude location provides the enchanting views of Great Himalayan National Park. We will descend to the other side from Jalori, the road has very bad patches till Anni but has very good view points in between. Few kilometers after Rampur we will take diversion from Jeori to Sarahan which is about 15kms. View from Sarahan are mind blowing and its peace and tranquility is like none other. Sarahan is also known as the – The Gateway of Kinnaur.

Today morning we will visit Bhimakali Tempe which is believed to be 800 years old and is dedicated to goddess Bhimakali. The temple has the architecture which is unique blend of Indian and Buddhist architecture style. Early after we will start for Kinnaur valley and our first stop will be Sangla in the Kinnaur. Sangla(2696m) have thick forest slopes and offers lovely views of the high mountains surrounding it. The road is quite adventurous and has been carved from the mountain and cling to cliffs for most of journey and followed by the Baspa river adds the extra charm to the route. By evening we will arrive at Sangla.

Today first we will visit to Chitkul(3450m) which is the last village in the valley, beyond which there lies Tibet. Chitkul has magical beauty and views which village provides are unmatched and incomparable. The temples are brilliantly carved here and even the houses. Don’t forget to take a photograph with sign board saying – ‘Hindustan ka Akhiri Dabha’. You will fell in love with this fairy tale village. Afternoon we will head towards Kalpa. Kalpa(2960m) is one of the best places to see the sunset and sunrise over the Kinner Kailash range.

If you want to see the most beautiful morning of your life, get up early before the sun rises. The view of rising sun touching the snow peaks will leave you spell bound. Today we will have to ride long through upper Kinnaur area. On the way we will stop and Nako Village(3662m). Nako lies on the edge of the Kinnaur district but character wise it is similar to Spiti valley. In the center of Nako village there is a sacred lake. The lake is very beautiful but nobody is allowed to bath or fishing in the lake. After exploring Nako we will head off to the Tabo. Enroute we will take detour to Geu village which holds the mummified body of a monk. Evening we will arrive at Tabo(3280m).

Well finally we are in magnificent Spiti Valley. Tabo is also known as the Ajanta of Himalayas. Untouched and preserved its glorious heritage, Tabo monastery is famous for its holiness and also a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Amazingly is 1200 years monastery is well preserved and painting here will make you feel that you are living the past. Then afternoon we will head to visit Dhankar monastery. As the name says it means fortress on the cliff. Dhankar monastery (3870m) offer some amazing view of Spiti Valley. The monastery if built as gigantic as a fort. Seeing the moving shadows of the floating clouds on the flood plains of Spiti and Pin River will make you feel that you are God of these mountains. Late afternoon we will head to Kaza.

Kaza (3800m) is the main headquarter of Spiti Valley. Today will be our sightseeing day around Kaza in which we will cover highest village and highest post office of the world. We start from Kibber which is around 20 kms from Kaza. Key monastery in Kibber is approximately 1000 years old and Kibber village is also very beautiful.

Then move to Langza, a small village situated at altitude of 4400 meters. The grand Buddha statue is the primary attraction of the village. Langza is also known for finding ancient fossils and there is also a fossil center in the village. Komic village at an altitude of 4600 meters is the world highest motor able village. The village has high vintage points with some awesome views and a Tangyud Monastery. You can see entire Spiti valley from here. Then we will visit Hikkim village (4440m) which has world highest  post office. You can also send postcards to your loved ones from here.

Today will be the most arduous day in the itinerary. In morning we will hit the road for Chandartal Lake(4300m). After Losar, brace yourself for the ascent to Kunzum La and for another episode of World’s Worst Roads (which lasts until you reach Gramphu and merge with the traffic of Leh-Manali).

Kunzum Pass(4590m) which has small temple of goddess Durga and with lots of flags. Chandartal which is also known as the moon lake due to is crescent shape. In the midst of brown shade of mountains there is turquoise blue patch of the lake. Your eye soothed by the beauty of lake. The lake looks completely different in the different times of the day.  We can also go for the parikarma of the lake which will take around 2 hours. . If you dare enough you can also take dip on the side of lake. We will stay at camp overnight. And don’t forget to witness the magical night sky from here, you can see the entire Milky way galaxy from naked eyes.

Today as our final day, ride will be the toughest to way back home. We will try to leave as early as possible because water streams on the road starts gushing at full speed as the rising temperature makes the snow melt rapidly. The infamous Pagal Nallas on the way will test your riding skills. Till Chatru road is followed by Chandra river and is complete off road trail full of water streams. From Gramphoo we will connect to the Leh – Manali highway and start the ascend for Rohtang pass towards Manali. Rohtang pass(3978m) connects the Lahaul valley and Kullu valley. First time you will see the herds of vehicle and traffic jam in the entire tour. But the views of high Pir Panjal peaks are breathtaking from above. Finally in evening we will reach Manali. You can also catch Volvo for Delhi or have rest day in Manali.

4 Ways to Get from Manali to Spiti Valley in 2024

If you’re wondering how to get from Manali to Spiti Valley, you have come to the right place! You will find the four ways to travel between both of these towns in this comprehensive guide.

Spiti Valley, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, is one of these Indian bucket list destinations located high in the Himalayan Mountains. This cold desert is famous for its Buddhist monasteries, breathtaking sceneries and beautiful lakes (think of Chandra Taal and Dhankar Lake ).

Kaza, the main town of Spiti Valley, is a 183 km (115 mi) ride from Manali. The largest part of the road to get there is off-road, though, and it takes at least 7 hours to reach it.

Manali to Spiti Valley: Overview

The road from Manali to Kaza passes Solang Valley, Rohtang Pass, Gramphu, Batal, Chandra Taal, Kunzum Pass and Losar, and the views along the way are magnificent!

While Manali is located at an altitude of 2,050 m (6,725 ft), Kaza is 3,800 m (12,467) high, so you will ascend 1750 m (5,741 ft) during the ride. You will learn more about how to prevent altitude sickness later in this post.

Here’s a quick overview of the four ways to travel between both of these towns:

Note that while the road from Manali to Kaza passes the entry point to Chandra Taal Lake , the lake is still a 12,5 km (7.8 mi) drive from here and that this is another road than the one to Kaza.

How to Travel from Manali to Spiti Valley

The road from Manali to Spiti Valley is open from mid-May to mid-October . It closes during the Winter months as the Rohtang Pass and the Kunzum Pass experience so much snowfall that it is impossible to drive here at this time of the year.

It is good to know that the options mentioned below work in two directions. So you can either travel from Manali to Kaza or from Kaza to Manali this way.

Do make sure to check if the road is open in advance if you’re planning on travelling between Manali and Spiti Valley. When it opens exactly depends on the weather and is different every year.

1. Shared van from Manali to Kaza

If you’re opting for public transportation, the shared van from Manali to Spiti Valley is a great option. I took this van from Kaza to Manali and it was a lot faster and way more comfortable than the local bus (which I took in the opposite direction).

This being said, the local van is also more expensive than the local bus. You can expect to pay 1200 to 1700 INR, depending on the time of your visit.

If you can afford it, it is worth taking the local van though, as it only took me 7 hours to travel between both cities this way, while the local bus took me around 12 hours (both include a stop for lunch).

2. Public bus from Manali to Kaza

The HRTC bus is the cheapest way to get from Manali to Kaza, but this is also the most time-consuming one.

I took this bus and paid 400 INR. It took about 11 or 12 hours to reach Kaza, but I was told that it could take up to 18 hours to get there, depending on the road conditions.

It is good to book your bus ticket at least one day in advance if you want to take the local bus, as seats tend to fill up pretty quickly. You can do so at the Main Manali Bus Stand. When I took the HRTC bus, some people didn’t have a seat and had to stand all the way to Manali, while others couldn’t get on the bus at all.

The local bus leaves early in the morning, around 5 or 6 a.m. So make sure to be there on time.

It is quite an experience to take this bus as the roads are bad and the driver’s driving skills are pretty impressive!

3. Private taxi

Taking a private taxi is another option to travel from Kaza to Manali or the other way around. This is one of the fastest and most flexible ones .

This being said, a private taxi will cost around 5,000 INR, so it is quite expensive, especially if you’re travelling in India solo .

It is good to know that although regular cars drive on these roads too, a 4×4 will probably be faster if you want to save some time.

4. Motorbike or private car

If you’re up for an adventure, travelling by motorbike or private car is a great way to get around Spiti Valley!

This will give you the most flexibility and it will also allow you to take a break when and wherever you want. If you don’t have your own motorbike or car, you can easily rent one in Manali.

Do note that the roads in Spiti Valley are pretty challenging and include gravel roads and water crossings. About 70% of the road to Kaza is off-road, so you will need some prior experience.

Altitude sickness and how to prevent it

The elevation of Manali is 2,050 m (6,725 ft), while Kaza is located at an elevation of 3,800 m (12,467) . So you will ascend 1750 m (5,741 ft) when you’re travelling between both cities.

As altitude sickness can occur at levels above 2,500 m (8,200 ft), it is important to be aware of the dangers of altitude sicknes s and how to prevent this disease. I had altitude sickness in Peru and it was horrible, I was bedridden for a couple of days and couldn’t do anything.

Some of the symptoms of altitude sickness are headaches, nausea, dizziness and malaise. Make sure to drink plenty of water to prevent altitude sickness. It is also good to avoid alcohol and caffeine, eat carbs and take it slowly (don’t run or anything like that).

In severe forms, altitude sickness can be deadly. So it is important to do your best to avoid it and contact a doctor if you’re experiencing symptoms.

Where to stay in Kaza

There are many hotels, guesthouses and homestays in Kaza. When I visited this town in June, many of these were fully booked, though, so it is good to book your accommodation in advance if you’re visiting during the high season.

• Zostel Spiti ( ⭐  8.4/10) : This hotel is located in the centre of Kaza and it offers beautiful rooms as well as beds in a dormitory. Apart from that, Zostel Spiti is also home to a shared lounge and restaurant serving delicious food.
• Social Courtyard Spiti ( ⭐  9.7/10): If you’re looking for a hostel with a homely atmosphere, Social Courtyard Spiti is a great choice. This hostel offers nice private rooms as well as beds in a dormitory.
• Nawang HomeStay ( ⭐  9.0/10): This homestay offers beautiful views of the river and some of its rooms have a private bathroom.

Day 1 – Manali Arrival

One of the most famous holiday destination in the northern India is Manali. Meet your team in the hotel along with the crew who will guide you further in the trip. Today you will also get the briefing done by your road captain about the route and schedule. All the dos and don’ts that you have to follow to make this trip a lifetime experience. You can buy anything that you missed from the market in Manali as almost everything is available here. Have your dinner and take good sleep so that you can wake up fresh for the ride that starts tomorrow.

Day 3 – Manali to Narkanda\Rampur (200\220 Kms)

After breakfast we head to Narkanda\Rampur via the famous Jalori Pass. A mountain pass at 3200 mtrs, Jalori Pass is one of the favourite places for trekkers, mountain lovers and riding enthusiasts. Move ahead to Narkanda\Rampur, once we reach check in to the hotel\Guest House\Camp and rest. Dinner will be served at night.

Day 4 – Narkanda\Rampur to Sangla\Chitkul (183\200 Kms)

After Breakfast, we will move ahead for our next destination which is the Beautiful Village of Chitkul, the Last Inhabited Village Near the Indo-tibet Border. the Drive to Chitkul is Extremely Scenic Amidst Snow -clad Mountains, Apple Orchids and Wooden Houses. Day 4 – Chitkul to Kalpa (70 Kms)

After breakfast at the hotel you will be driven to Kalpa village (2-3 hrs.) Enroute we will stop at Reckongpeo and will have a walk around the local market. Reckongpeo is the district headquarters of Kinnaur district. We will have lunch in a local restaurant where you have a choice to enjoy Indian or Tibetian food. After lunch we will drive to kalpa ( 7 kms), you will check in to your hotel. Evening would be free to relax and explore the Kalpa village and to enjoy the finest views of the Mt. Kinner Kailash Mountain (6,000 metres). This is a spectacular sight early in the morning as the rising sun touches the snowy peaks with crimson and gold light.

Day 5 – Kalpa to Kaza (204 Kms)

Early breakfast we will leave for Kaza. Enroute Indo-Tiber highway. We will also experience the Khab- Confluence of Spiti and the Satluj River. We will also stop at the Nako Lake and have lunch and after lunch cross Nako and enter Spiti valley right after you cross Sumdo. Take a detour from here to visit the 500 Year Old Mummy in the Gue Village. Head to Kaza for dinner and overnight stay . 

Day 6 –  Kaza : Hikkim – Komik – Langza : Kaza (48 Kms)

Post Early Morning Breakfast, Take Your Bike Out Today To Explore The Spectacular Beauty Of Kaza. Visit The Tourist Spots Including Key Gompa Monastery That Is Nestled Between The Mountains In A Bowl Shape, In The Small Village Langza Of Spiti Valley. This Village Is At A Whopping Height Of About 14,500 Ft Above Sea Level. • In case of any updates in the booking, the consumer has to give a prior notice to Backpackclan (KSN Tours Private Limited)
• Transfer of the booking is not allowed. Only the names mentioned at the time of Booking shall be allowed to travel

Know before you book

• For protection purposes, a cycling excursion isn't encouraged for girls who're more than three months pregnant, anybody that has had recent surgery has a damaged leg/arm, has persistent returned or neck pains, etc.
• Climatic situations vary in the hills as compared to the plains. Relaxing and getting used to the climate before attempting the trip is necessary.
• The inns are issued according to their availability. In case they're now no longer available, the visitors may be accommodated in places of comparable standard.
• Pay heed to the excursion chief and teachers to experience a secure and sound excursion.
• All-access tickets for stupas, monasteries, sightseeing, kingdom and access fees, monument entrances, digital digicam fees, permits, etc. aren't part of the package deal.
• Any non-public fees or objects of private nature will now no longer be blanketed within the package deal. 
• Transportation at some stage in the journey could be in Non AC & Non-Heater vehicles. Please pack garments accordingly.

Spiti Valley Itinerary (& Circuit Road Trip) from Shimla

Spiti Valley is a cold mountain desert located in the rain shadow region of the Greater Himalayan ranges . It is snuggled in the north-eastern part of Himachal Pradesh.

Proceeding in counterclockwise fashion from Chandigarh, roadway (NH5) of Spiti valley circuit route passes through Solan, Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur Bushahr, Sarahan, Chitkul , Nako, Tabo and Kaza.

The closing line of Spiti circuit traverses along the Spiti river and meets Manali town after it passes through the Atal tunnel or Rohtang pass.

The valley is bounded by the districts of Kinnaur in the south-east, Kullu in the south, and the valleys of Zanskar and Union Territory of Ladakh in the north. In the east, Spiti shares its boundary with Tibet (China).

The name Spiti or Piti — as it is known among the locals— means ‘The Middle Land’ that is the land between India and Tibet.

Why take Shimla-Kaza-Manali route for Spiti Valley Road Trip?

There are two road routes to reach Spiti valley, but we recommend the Shimla-Kaza route because:

• Manali to Solang valley and Atal tunnel (north portal) road stretch gets busy during peak summer season (i.e. June-August). You may get stuck in a traffic jam.
• Gramphu to Batal Road is riddled with waterfalls, glacial water melts streams, and water crossings. It is easier and more convenient to drive through this part of the road from Kaza side.
• There is a gradual increase in altitude (barring Narkanda-Rampur Road segment) when driving on the Shimla-Kaza route. This gradual rise in altitude is good for acclimatization. Especially for people coming from the plains.

Day 1 : Chandigarh to Shimla-Narkanda drive

On arrival at Chandigarh, drive to Shimla. Halt at Shimla for lunch and sightseeing. Resume the drive and drive to Narkanda(8,858 feet). Overnight stay at HPTDC hotel.

Day 2: Narkanda to Sarahan drive

Sarahan is a beautiful village famous for the architecturally and historically significant Bhimakali temple, which has a history of more than 1500 years. One can take in the stunning views of the Srikhand Mahadev peak (5150 meters) from there.

While not actually close enough as it seems, the spectacular Srikhand Mahadev mountain range appears as if it is just an arm’s length away. Visit the bird sanctuary of a near-extinct bird species.

Drive to Chitkul village and stay there in a hotel. Drive distance is about 106 Kms. Night stay at hotel in Chitkul.

Day 4: Chitkul to Kalpa drive

Distance 62 km. 3 hours drivetime on Chitkul-Sangla-Karcham road, NH5 and Powari-Kalpa connecting road.

Chitkul (at 3400 meters above sea level), is the last village on the Indo-Tibet border. It is the most visited place in the Baspa Valley of Kinnaur.

We will visit Chitkul Mata temple and then drive back to Sangla . When we reach Sangla, we can visit the Bering Nag temple on our return trip. Visit the ancient fort at Kamru village.

As we continue on our journey, we will reach Kalpa, a well-known place – both among travellers and locals – for breathtaking sunrises over the Kinnaur Kailash mountain range.

After breakfast, drive (65 km distance) to Kalpa that is located at 8800 feet. Visit Chini village monastery and temple, Roghi cliff point and Roghi village. Overnight stay at the HPTDC Kalpa hotel.

Day 5: Kalpa to Charang village

Day 6: Charang to Tabo monastery drive

Village walk in Charang (altitude 3400 mtr) and visit Rangrik monastery which is more than thousands of years old. Charang has Zanskar kind of landscape and houses and similar to houses built by the people of Zanskar region.

Drive to Thangi and visit to Lochwa monastery located in the middle of Thangi village. Visit Moorang fort and Moorang village.

After lunch, head toward Nako. Nako is located at an altitude of 10496 feet in the barren Hangrang valley of Kinnaur. Visit Nako Lake and monastery and drive to Sumdo check post and the oldest monastery of Himachal, Tabo. Overnight at a hotel/homestay.

Sumdo Check Post

Due to ever-increasing footfall of the tourists — and the resultant increase in their carbon footprint — in Lahaul and Spiti district, the district administration has started levying SADA (Special Area Development Authority) fee/toll at Sumdo Indian Army Check Post from 1 January 2024.

It was discussed (at a meeting of the Special Area Development Authority) that the tourist traffic is increasing day by day in the Spiti valley. Due to this, there is a financial shortage for solid waste management and sewage management in the Kaza and Tabo areas of Spiti block.  — Harsh Negi, SDM, Kaza

Day 7: Tabo – Pin Valley drive

On day 7 of Spiti circuit itinerary, we leave Tabo after breakfast and drive to Mudh village, the last village in Pin valley. Pin Valley is the least explored valley in Himachal Pradesh’s Spiti region.

Explore Mikkim and the village of Sangnam . Visit the Kungri Monastery and then the charming hamlet of Mudh — the Pin Valley’s last motorable village.

Stay at Mud for the night (12000 feet above sea level).

Day 8: Mud – Dhankar monastery – Kaza

Drive to the eye-catching and imposing monastery of Dhankar . Perched on a riverfront cliff, Dhankar was the former capital of the Spiti Valley (when the valley was ruled by Nono kings).

Overlooking the Spiti river, it offers panoramic views of the river valley. Visit one of the oldest Gompa in the Spiti Valley. Overnight at a hotel in Kaza.

Day 9: Kaza-Hikkim-Lalung-Langza-Key-Kibber (5 – 6 hours drivetime)

The highest village in Asia, Komik, which literally translates to ‘eye of a snowcock’, is situated at a height of 4513 meters. Later, we drive to Hikkim where we visit the world’s highest post office in the world. After sending out a postcard, we drive to Langza.

Once you are here, you can walk around the village and visit the ancient Lang (Temple) which is estimated to be around 1000 years old. Visit to Key monastery . Overnight stay at Cherring’s homestay, Kibber .

Day 10: Drive from Kaza to Kunzum top (4551 meter) & camp at Chandertal Lake (4270 meter)

Distance 102 km. 4 hours drivetime on Kaza-Kuzum-Batal road (NH505) and Batal-Chandratal lake connecting road.

Drive to one of the most photogenic places in Spiti Valley – the Chandra Tal Lake. Before that, we pass through the high altitude pass of Kunzum La. Stop by at the stupa and pay tribute to the local goddess, “Kuzum Mata” as she’s known.

At 15,000 feet above sea-level, the Kunzum Pass connects Kullu and Lahaul to the Spiti Valley. Live your dream of camping comfortably in the Himalayas as you spend your evening gazing at the Milky Way and the millions of stars on a clear night. Overnight at a camp 2 km away from Chandratal Lake.

Day 11 : Chandratal lake to Manali drive via Atal tunnel

On the 10th day of this Spiti Valley tour, drive from Chandratal Lake towards Manali. Drive through the engineering marvel i.e. Atal tunnel and drive to Manali to end our breath-taking Spiti Valley sojourn. Overnight at a hotel in Manali.

Day 12 . Manali to Chandigarh.

After breakfast, enjoy some brilliant views of the Himalayas from your hotel in Manali. Proceed to Chandigarh after breakfast. Drop off at Chandigarh airport in the afternoon. The Spiti circuit tour ends here.

🧭 Places to visit en route Spiti valley

Narkanda is a small town in the Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh. It is located at an altitude of 2750 meters on the Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH 05). Surrounded by the forest Kinnaur – Garhwal Himalayan Range. The experience of a panormic view from the Hatu top is not to be missed.

Padam Palace, Rampur Bushahr

The palace of erstwhile Bushahr princely state is built in neo-gothic architecture. Built between 1919 and 1925 for the Raja of Bushehr, the main building is still private, but one section is now the Nau Nabh Hotel, and the garden is open to visitors. From here you can admire the facade’s stone arches, carved-wood upper storey, peaked gables, and turreted towers. In front is a remarkable multi-gabled bandstand carved with peacock figures.

Sarahan is a small village near Jeori town. It is the site of the Bhimakali Temple, dedicated to the goddess Bhimakali, the presiding deity of the rulers of the former Bushahr State. The temple is situated about 170 kilometers from Shimla and 12 kilometers from Jeori town.

Sarahan Pheasantry

Also known as Jajurana Bird Sanctuary, this park is worth a visit. It hosts Jajurana, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh and a few other rare birds. Please note that the sanctuary remains closed from July to September for bird mating season. If you are traveling in any month apart from these three, a visit is highly recommended.

Baspa valley of Kinnaur

Bordering along western Himalaya with Tibet and Garhwal, the Baspa valley of Kinnaur has been open to visitors since the early nineties. The valley got its name from the Baspa river which originates from Chung Sakhago pass and meanders for around 30 km before meeting Satluj on its left bank near Karcham. Unlike the Spiti valley and Hangrang region of Kinnaur, the Baspa valley is a green paradise in largely barren mountains.

Baspa valley or Sangla valley is known for fruit-laden orchards, cedar-covered slopes and flower crusted meadows. Bhojpatra tree is abundantly found in the Chitkul region. A land of blue skies, buzzing Baspa river, soaring peaks, deep valleys, apple orchards, and syncretic culture — Baspa valley a place for people who are seeking genuine peace and soul-calming solitude far, far from the madding crowd. The fort of Kamru is another landmark in Baspa valley.

Chitkul, Rackcham, Sangla, Kamru and Chansu villages should be on your bucket list if you are visiting Kinnaur for the first time.

Kalpa Village

A small village about 10 kilometers from district headquarters Reckong Peo, known for the magnificent view of Kinner Kailash peaks . The focal point is Chini village and surrounding places like Kalpa Narayanas temple and Buddhist monastery.

Kalpa will probably be the last town where your phone will work flawlessly, no matter which network you are on. As you cross Kalpa and continue towards Pooh, your phone services will be a come and go before it completely dies. Only the BSNL network works in the Spiti & Lahaul valley.

Reo Purgyil peak view

At an altitude of 6816m, it is the highest peak of the state of Himachal Pradesh . You can get a good view of the peak from Khab Bridge if the weather is clear. If not from Khab Bridge, you will have to go up to Namgia or Tashigang village to get a clear view. Nako Village is located on the slopes of this mountain.

Nako Lake And Monastery

A small man-made lake in the village of Nako. It is not much to look at during the daytime but try some photography around the lake at either dusk or dawn and you will be able to get some good shots. Nako Monastery is an 11th-century ancient monastery located in the village of Nako . It was built by Buddhist Mahaguru Rinchen Zangpo who translated many Sanskrit Buddhist texts into Tibetan. He founded around 100 monasteries in western Tibet including Tabo monastery.

Tabo Monastery

Tabo Monastery: An ancient monastery believed to be over a thousand years old and one of the holiest. Founded in 996 AD it is also known as Ajanta of the Himalayas . Many priceless collections of scroll paintings, manuscripts, well-preserved statues, frescoes, and extensive murals can be found here.

Dhankar Monastery

Also known as Dhangkar Gompa, it is an ancient monastery built on a 1000 foot high cliff overlooking the confluence of Spiti and Pin Rivers. Apart from its heritage, this monastery is also famous for its spectacular setting. “Dhang” means cliff and “Kar” means fort, hence the literal name of the place is “Fort on a cliff”.

Key Monastery

Also known as Kye or Ki Gompa, it is one of the largest monasteries in Spiti valley that also serves as a training center for Lamas. It is believed to be over a thousand years old and has a vast collection of ancient murals and books.

Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary

It was established in 1992, Kibber is India’s only wildlife sanctuary in cold desert and is home to several rare animals like Ibex, Blue Sheep, Red Fox, Tibetan woolly hare, Himalayan wolf, lynx, pika, Tibetan wild ass.

Kunzum Pass

Your first high altitude pass of the journey, unless you have somehow managed to climb up to Shipki La in which case Kunzum will be your second. Connecting the valleys of Lahaul and Spiti, this pass is at an elevation of 4,590 meters, higher than Rohtang La. It remains closed from late October until early June.

Chandratal Lake

A beautiful lake is also the source of the river Chandrabhaga . If you can manage to be around here after sunset, it is a perfect place for capturing some magnificent sky and milky way pictures.

This small lake is one of the key highlights of the journey to Spiti valley and a perfect camping spot. There is also a legend associated with this lake. The confluence of the “moon-born” Chandra and the “sun-born” Bhaga takes place at Tandi, where the fabled Chandrabhaga or Chenab River comes into being.

Interestingly enough, Wikipedia article refer this lake as Tso Chigma . Tso is a Tibetan / Bhoti word which translates to lake, but there is no reference of Chigma either in Tibetan or Bhoti language. A lake is referred to as Dhar in Spiti vernacular language.

The mighty Rohtang pass, the spot where you will cross over to Manali and finish your Spiti journey. The name of this pass literally means “a pile of corpses” which I believe attributes to the fact that a lot of people died while crossing it in ancient times. Expect to find snow at the top no matter which month you are traveling in. The vistas around from the top of the pass and even on the ascent/descent are quite breathtaking.

Palari (or Balari top) is one and hour hour hike away from Demul village. From this vantage point, one can see about 15 (including Demul) villages of Spiti valley.

In summers, the maximum temperature crosses the 20 degrees Celsius mark in Spiti valley. During sunny daytime, you’ll feel comfortable just by wearing a t-shirt and trousers. It is always good to get wrapped in layers of clothes, as the weather can change anytime in the Himalayas. Spiti valley is acclaimed for its distinctive Moon-esque landscapes and interesting landforms. 5 entities that define the Spiti valley are:  Chandratal — .the lake of moon.   Buddhist monasteries of Ki, Kaza, Kungri, and Tabo.  Snow leopards of Kibber — the grey ghost of the Himalayas. Fascinating Tibetan culture and customs.  Fossils — dating back to the Triassic period (252-201 million years ago) — of  Langza village.  

Shimla to Narkanda-Rampur Bushahr-Powari-Pooh-Dubling village drive is on National Highway 5 (NH5). The Dubling village to Nako-Tabo-Kaza drive is on NH505. Kaza is the headquarters of Spiti valley. During winters, Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur road gets closed for a day or two whenever there is a long spell of snowfall. During such events, take the Shimla-Suni-Rampur Bushahr route along the Satluj river. This route stays open for all 365 days of the year. It takes longer — when compared from Manali to Spiti valley (Via Atal tunnel) route — to reach Kaza from Shimla. Shimla is one of the two places (second is Manali town) to start the Spiti valley circuit tour .

The road from Manali follows the Solang Valley-Atal tunnel-Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum Pass-Losar-Kaza route. The distance from Manali to Kaza is 183 km, and it takes about 6-7 hours (at one go) to reach Kaza. Manali-Kaza is a shorter route than the Shimla-Kaza route.  Though the Atal Tunnel has hardly reduced the road distance between Manali and Spiti valley by nearly 20 km, the drive time between the two places has now been reduced by over 2 hours. Manali town is one of the two — the second is Shimla — places to start the Spiti valley circuit tour .

You need to follow Ambala-Zirakpur Expressway on National Highway(NH) 44 and Zirakpur to Shimla (111 km) on NH5 in Himachal Pradesh. Shimla to Narkanda-Rampur Bushahr-Powari-Pooh-Dubling village drive is on NH5. Dubling village to Nako-Tabo-Kaza drive is on NH505. Kaza is the headquarter of Spiti valley.

Yes. The circuit is doable in October, though, the weather gets highly erratic — after September — in high altitude regions of Kinnaur, Spiti valley and Lahaul valley.

No. The Manali-Spiti route gets closed when thick layers of snow blankets the Kunzum pass in November/December. The traffic movement resumes only after March month. 

Though the Manali to Spiti valley route gets closed — most often after November/early December till March — during winters, the Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur-Nako-Kaza road stays open even during wintertime. During long spells of snowfall, Shimla-Kaza road may get closed for a day or two. Spiti Valley Itinerary For A Solo Bike Trip: Travel Blog

Planning Spiti Valley bike trip? This blog will help you plan a solo journey the basis of my personaly experiences and learning. 

Many years ago, my father happened to stay in Lahaul and Spiti. He told me stories about its raw and uninviting nature (and thus helping me in this Spiti Valley itinerary).

It was from him that I knew how disconnected this place can feel. Time has changed though. Daily morning buses now connect Spiti Valley to its neighbours. Private cars and taxis also, at times, are quite visible.

But that doesn’t mean that a road trip to Spiti Valley is any less adventurous now. Compared to Ladakh, this place is still very harsh and desolate.

It takes a certain amount of madness to drive on these uninviting, mesmerizing landscapes. And to plan a solo bike trip to Spiti Valley, you need to be more than just mad.

I remember when I was planning my itinerary, I was a little scared too. But to hell with it, I still decided to go ahead!

[Update in 2023: Since Spiti Valley has grown in popularity over the years and has got crowded if you’re looking for something more adventurous do Shinkula Pass in Zanskar. Connecting Keylong to Kargil, this route was opened only last year in 2019]

Now coming back to…

Spiti Valley

Spiti Valley is accessible by road throughout the year and requires you to travel nearly a distance of 700 to 900 km, depending on all places you want to visit on the way and what route you originally took. I traveled from Shimla to Kaza to Manali.

You can also complete the journey the other way around – by starting from Manali, and following the tribal circuit until you reach Shimla.

But I would personally advise you to start from Shimla. And that is for a couple of reasons…

• If you start from Shimla, it would be easy for you to acclimatize to high altitude.
• This way you won’t need to obtain a permit to cross Rohtang Pass, which you otherwise do if you are doing Manali-Kaza-Shimla or Manali to Kaza and back. Obtaining the permit means spending the extra money and spending a day in the DC office, in Manali.

Before you leave for the Spiti Valley bike trip, do not forget to check if Kunzum Pass is open.

Though the route will remain open from Shimla, only until Losar. After a few kilometres from Losar (if Kunzum Pass is closed) you will have to turn around and repeat your Spiti Valley itinerary – Losar to Shimla to Delhi (as shown in the map below). Check about the status of the Kunzum Pass on the Himachal Tourism website .

Now, before I discuss the itinerary, I want to tell you that this can be the cheapest Spiti Valley tour if you follow all my suggestions and camp throughout the trip, as suggested in the blog below.

For your information, I spent only 5000 Rupees to do the entire journey from Delhi to Spiti Valley, including food, fuel and accommodation costs.

But if you decide to camp, be prepared for the adventure. This place, as I said above, is very inhospitable (see these Spiti Valley pictures to get the idea) and a budget camping trip makes it even more so.

Now let’s start with the itinerary

Delhi to Spiti Valley Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1: delhi to chandigarh.

Before I left home for this trip, if there was one thing I was sure about, it was – I was going to travel slowly. This was to enjoy the movement and to keep my butt away from getting sore.

Day 1 of my Spiti Valley itinerary started a little early, at 4 in the morning, and I already found myself driving on a perfect highway doing over 100 km per hour. I reached Delhi to Chandigarh (about 250 km) in less than four hours.

Night 1 turned out to be the only night, in the entire journey, when I did not camp.

Day 2: Chandigarh to Arphu

Day 2 of my Spiti Valley itinerary took me from Chandratal to a town called Arphu. It takes about one and a half hours to drive from Chandigarh to Shimla (if you end up being lucky and find no traffic on the way).

The road to Shimla, and further ahead, is mostly good in shape and stays good all year round, which assures you a smooth ride.

You might have to ask a few people about the directions before you hit Narkanda, but once you cross Narkanda there is pretty much only one single highway to follow.

People driving from Shimla to Kaza, from New Delhi often spend a night in Shimla. I would suggest they leave Shimla for lousy weekend getaways and drive a little further to stay somewhere in Narkanda or in Rampur. These towns are comparatively scenic and peaceful.

I had, however, found a small establishment near Kingel – a town named ‘Arphu’ where I camped on day 2 of my Spiti Valley bike trip. To my satisfaction, Arphu has no guest house but only local people’s houses. Since I was the only guest in the town, I was invited by a local family to dine at their house. People from Delhi bring new and worldly stories for these people, so getting such invitations in the small towns of Himachal Pradesh is no tough deal. Happens all the time!

And that’s how my camping days began during my Spiti Valley bike trip. From day 2 until the last day, I rode solo and camped solo throughout my 9-day trip.

Day 3: Arphu to Sangla

Day 3 Started with a light shower. Kinnaur can give you a drizzle at times, so do not forget to bring a rain cover for your luggage and for yourself. Spiti Valley is comparatively dry.

You’ll experience the first-ever “You Don’t Call It A Road” episode of your Spiti Valley itinerary near Wangtu where you drive about 8 km towards Tapri under an angry bright sun. It took me 40 mins to cover this nasty 8 km stretch. I had to stop every 10 minutes to check if my bike was not yet punctured. Tapri, however, awards you with a perfect Hot Spring where you can relax a bit. The hot spring is situated about 2 km away from the town of Tapri. The town also has a petrol pump, in case you’re planning a little detour towards Chitkul – the last Indian town.

Chitkul, in recent times, has gained some interest in the travel community, due to its beautiful surroundings and perfect climate.

Please note that I have added Chiktul to my Spiti Valley itinerary only because I went there. Many solo riders and group tours don’t take you to Chitkul it adds approximately 150 Kilometres to your entire Delhi to Spiti Valley distance.

But those who visit Chitkul never come back dissatisfied.

I camped in Sangla, which was a little less than 20kms before Chitkul.

Day 4: Sangla to Chitkul

You feel the difference when you enter Sangla Valley [see these  Chitkul Pictures to get an idea]. Snow-capped mountains, perfectly beautified with ancient Tibetan architecture – dating back its foundation to the 19th century.

A gentle stream of water can be found running next to the narrow driveway – which, for most of its part, can be found in good condition. The drive, I am sure, at any time of the year feels no less than driving on a ‘road to heaven’.

Chitkul is a tiny Tibetan settlement claiming its small portion of land at the end of the Indian border before Spiti Valley begins.

The town also has a popular 500 years old Mathi temple with images of Shakyamuni Buddha, a wheel of life Mangala and four directional kings on either side of the door.

Chitkul is also believed to be the last point of Kinner Kailash Parikrama . Any pilgrim who does it ends their trip by praying at its Mathi Temple

Often known as the last Indian town, is a perfectly quiet town, with good – though a little expensive – accommodation options, which range from camping – for Rupees 1,500 a night – to comparatively cheaper rooms. I ended up camping, again and bailed out for free.

Day 5: Chitkul To Nako

Day 5 of my Spiti Valley bike trip itinerary took me from Chitkul to the beautiful Nako Valley.

You can kill the engine between Chitkul and Karccham, as it’s mostly downhill. Karccham to Rekong Peo is a little less than an hour’s drive which can be avoided if you’re Indian, as the town has nothing extraordinary to offer. Foreign nationals, however, are required to obtain a permit in Rekong Peo, which they will have to submit at a couple of check posts in Spiti Valley.

I skipped Rekong Peo and rode straight towards Puh. Do not, however, forget to fill your petrol tank in Rekong Peo, which has the last petrol station until you finally reach Kaza, after a long and dusty ride of more than 200 kilometres.

You’re required to register yourself at your first checkpoint in Puh, which takes 2 minutes for Indians and about 15-20 minutes for non-Indians. The road from Puh soon transforms itself into a driver’s nightmare. Though numerous hairpin bends and close-to-open views of the Spiti Valley will keep you engaged, and a little encouraged too, with its beauty.

It took me about 8 hours to reach Nako, from Chitkul. Nako is a sleepy settlement with beautiful panoramic views of the Himalayas. Cheap accommodation options make Nako a preferred destination among backpackers. Nako Lake was a big disappointment for me, due to its significantly tiny dimensions. What made Nako perfect for me, however, was the 15th-century Nako Monastery which allowed me to camp inside its premises – certainly a highlight throughout my 9-day Spiti Valley bike trip.

Day 6: Nako To Key

Day 6 of my Spiti Valley itinerary finally took me to Kaza, but I stayed in Key and not in Kaza,

Kaza is about 5 km from the town of Kaza. To me, the idea of staying in a small town, which is far less touristy and is close to a 13th-century monastery (perched on a mountaintop) seemed more appealing. Though I was disappointed, for I did not get permission to stay in the monastery, or camp anywhere outside it, the town of Key, to my satisfaction, had quite a few open spaces for camping.

The drive from Nako to Key is beautiful. Big-sized excavators and road-rollers can be found running throughout the year here, trying to remove any debris from the road and change the condition of the road from worse to moderately worse.

Once you cross the town of Tabo, the valley opens itself and keeps expanding until you cross Kunzum Pass. It is after this moment you get the most beautiful landscapes throughout your Spiti Valley bike trip.

Day 7: Key To Losar

Losar turned out to be a sleepy Shangri-La. Its people, its beauty, and the tranquillity, everything was perfect in every sense. It was in Losar where I was only allowed to camp inside a private property, as according to locals “it would be convenient and safe for me”. There are quite a few accommodation options too, in Losar.

Day 8: Losar To Chandratal

As you journey from Losar to Manali, you start moving away from Spiti Valley and enter Lahaul Valley. Brace yourself for the ascent to Kunzum La and for another episode of World’s Worst Roads (which lasts until you reach Gramphu and merge with the traffic of Leh-Manali). Tar will occasionally come and go here.

After crossing Kunzum Pass and driving a few kilometres downhill towards Batal, you will come across a narrow driveway – wide enough for only one car to clear. This is a 12.5km stretch which goes all the way to Chandratal. A traffic signboard, however, will point towards Chandratal, so you’ll have no problem in finding which way to go.

Caution is advised while driving, especially during a solo drive to Chandraral. Keep on the lookout for any vehicle coming from the other side, and if you spot a car in the other direction, look for a wide enough spot and wait there for the other vehicle to pass you by. Share proud looks with the other driver and part your ways.

Despite a challenging drive, Chandratal is a no-miss on any Spiti Valley bike trip. Situated at an altitude of about 4,300m, this is where you’ll find vainglorious mountains overlooking the lake on one side, with a magnificent cirque on the other – if you know what that means. The way to Chandratal is accessible by a motorbike, or a jeep, up to the very end. You would then only be required to scrape your feet and walk for 10 minutes to reach the beautiful Chandratal Lake.

Chandratal has no guest houses but only a few camping sites. For a luxury camping experience, you might need to pay around 2500 Rupees per person, and for a rugged, what-a-night experience you pay 700. I camped on my own, once again, and had a different experience. “Time to get a room,” I thought the next morning.

And that was it, my Spiti Valley road trip was coming to an end. Day 9 was moreover the day when I camped for the last time during this Spiti Valley itinerary.

Day 9: Chandratal to Manali

Return the same way that took you to Chandratal until you come back to the diversion and take the highway that goes to Batal.

Make sure you fill your stomach at one of the dhabas in Batal because the next town might be a little far. Though it’s only 18 km away since you’ll be driving at only about 10kms/hour – thanks to a poor road. This 50 km stretch, from Batal to Gramphoo, will eat up good 4-5 hours of your daylight.

After Gramphoo, comes Rohtang Pass, overcrowded by tourists looking for places to visit near Manali . Rohtang Pass is always surrounded by thick fog with rain being a certain possibility on the top, so make sure you cover up with raincoats and plastic bags. This is no Spiti Valley. Rain is now a common story here.

After Rohtang Top, there are many places to eat and rest for a while. A little further ahead lies the beautiful Solang Valley, with better camping spaces. But I decided to take a room in Manali, for I had done enough camping on the way.

From Manali, you can also plan another interesting bike trip to Sach Pass. If you’re interested, here’s the Sach Pass itinerary I followed during my trip in August 2019. Though I did it from Delhi to Sach Pass to Manali, you can repeat the entire journey the other way round, ie Manali to Sach Pass to Delhi.

Hey Rishi, you’d perhaps want to reconsider Manali. The route between Kaza-Kunzum Pass-Manali has got some snowfall recently. Just checked on HRTC (Himachal government buses) Facebook page that they’ve stopped operating their buses too for now on that route because of bad weather. Hey Ramesh, thanks for writing. The itinerary looks good. One thing, I’d like to point out is that Day4 (from Kalpa to Kaza) might be too much of riding, though of course, it is doable, be careful that you leave early morning and ride aggressively throughout the day. Have fun mate!

So nicely done Dev. We (me and my friend) are planning to go from the same route you went but we don’t have that many days(10 days is what we have) i.e. we have to return to our Jobs. There are several things I wanna ask as I haven’t been camping before.

1) What if we don’t camp? Do we can find accommodation? and secondly how dear are they? 2) Since we’ll be goig via shimla and return via manali – do ww still need to deal with permit and stuff? 3) A Pulsar 200AS and Suzuki Gixxer SF, will they do ir not? 4) All hard cash? Can we find Atms or not? If not, how much should be enough for two that would include our food+accom+petrol+Wear&tear 5) Clothing! What to carry – how much to carry?

We’re planning to leave in first of july; June was on the carde but you know it’s quite tough to get leaves done in vacations. Thanks in advance Sir.

finding atms is a problem, better carry cash, the bikes you mentions woudl do great. you can sure find the accommodation on the way. carry minimum, but carry a very good biking jacket, as you will be riding under harsh weather conditions (it will be too warm and too cold, nothing in between).

Thank you for such an inspiring article. I have already tried one unsuccessful trip to spiti valley. This is my second try. My friends and I are planning a trip this week only. Can you suggest whether 6 days would be sufficient from Delhi to spiti and back. Please suggest the possible route ,the places we should visit and things to carry. We have 2 Classic 350’s and one Avenger 220. Any other advice would be great for us.

I can’t imagine why your first try was unsuccessful. Perhaps because you have no time. 5 days in Spiti from Delhi to Delhi would be an injustice man, to yourself, your motorbikes, nature, and everything else in between. Anyway, I’d suggest the same route I followed, with fewer stops (particularly avoid visiting Chitkul and Chandratal). And don’t forget to drive forget an extra accelerator wire 😀

Hi, iam planning a Bicycle ride from Spiti valley to Khardhung lah with my friends on Mid August or sep. We are from Kochi, kerala. We will reach delhi by train with our cycles. Our plan is to carry Cycles through bus from delhi to spiti. is it possible to get single bus from delhi to spiti? is it allowed to carry cycles in bus? pls help. (y)

hey man, glad to see your willingness to do it on cycle, going ecofriendly is always the best way to travel. Anyway, I can’t say if they allow transporting cycles or not, but i think they do. I’d advise you to conctact HRTC. You can call them or write them on their correspondence number/email provided on their website (they generally reply and advise very well). HRTC has a great service. Other than that, you can get a direct bus from Delhi to Reckong Peo and then Reckong Peo to Kaza. Good luck 🙂

A very well documented journey & totally inspiring one. I need some help in planning a similar trip 6th May’17 reaching delhi @ 8am – 13th May’17 dep delhi @ 10:20am. I will be a pilion rider with a friend. Planning to cab it from delhi to shimla/manali since we want to use 6th may & not waste it in delhi. And then rent an Royal Himalayan Enfield or any bike that you can suggest for a comfortable ride. Also did u camp all through the above journey or were you staying at guesthouses/homestays? Pls Share contact nbrs if any. Also this will be my first self camping trip so suggestions on food, places to freshen up at if poss LOL . Also I believe the lower back starts aching & buttocks gets sore on long bike journeys any tips for ensuring high energy levels & good back. sorry for sounding so ignorant but as I have shared earlier this will be my 1st biking & camping trip that too in Himachal 🙂 Basically all advise is welcome. yes, cars do fine. I’ve seen people driving their Alto 800s there, but you’ve to be a very trained driver though.

Spiti valley is like a dream destination for me. Its highly daunting and treacherous route makes it more adventurous. Will surely try to visit this place this year.

My name is Aditys. I am from delhi adn planning my spiti trip in 2017. I just completed my LEh trip in sep 2016 on my re classic 350. On some stretches roads were totally messed up. I fall thrice (loss of traction downhill) but other than that it was awesome. Kindly advise me which month is best to go, which route, what to see and how to plan.

Hey Aditya, I think the best time is around May and June. Why because this is when Kunzum pass opens (mostly in June, but sometimes in May as well). If Kunzum pass is closed, because of snowfall, you cannot access the valley from Manali – Kaza. Though you can do it from Shimla – Kaza, pretty much throughout the year, but you won’t be able to make a loop. If you read this story, you will get a clear idea what routemap I followed and how to plan. I’m sure if I give you the answer here, it will be exaclty what I’ve written in the story. If you’ve any particular doubt, please let me know. About the month, I’d say June is a good month, because the weather is comparatively warm and there’s no scope of rain either (in Kinnaur Valley, which is the gateway to Spiti valley, from Shimla). Hi Dev, nice article, we are planning route kalka – mandi – reckong peo- tabo – spiti, between 10-15 oct, do you think it is doable? we will be on bike, also is there any scenic this time of year or snowfall all around….

You’d kill twos day in doing Kalka to Mani and Mandi to Rekong Peo. Perhaps go straight from Kalka to Chandigarh and further on towards Shimla. This route would save you a good 100 Kms. And yea, if you reach Shimla or Rampur in 1 day (from Kalka) I think 5 days should be enough to do Spiti Valley, though you’d have to drive most of the hours in a day. Good luck!

Yea October is a good time to go. But before you leave, and to be on safer side, confirm with a tour operator in Manali about the condition at Kunzum Pass, you need to make sure that it’s still passable.

I am planning to do a bike trip to Spiti with my friend. So we will be two people: Both of us have a moderate bike riding experience in the cities, but we have never ridden in mountains. Do you think its a good idea to do it on bike since it will be our first time for riding in mountains?

What kind of bike is good? As I mentioned, we are not “Hardcore Bikers”, never done a long trip on Bike. We certainly would not want to take Enfield on the dangerous roads since we dont have much experience.

Do we need to learn basic bike maintenance and repairing and carry the repairing kid as well?

it absolutely is doable even if you’ve never driven in mountains. I also had a few day trips around mountains, but it was my first ever week long solo trip in Himalayas. And I ended up being in Spiti Valley , which is way tougher than Leh, and much isolated too. I had no bad experience, though you can call me a little lucky, but i think if you try to be conscious about your surroundings and be a little careful, you’re going to be okay.

Skip the Royal Enfield, I’d say go for a Pulsar (200 or 220) or an Avenger. Avenger is more suitable I guess. Try not to go below a 200cc engine , to have some power in your engine.

i want to go spiti by 100cc platina in 10th of September. Please suggest can i complete the circuit by 100cc platina in september.

I think a 100 CC platina – if it is fairly new in condition and does not carry much weight – should be good to go. September is perfectly okay to explore Spiti, you should definitely go ahead with it. There are few patches on the way which are really bad and Platina’s slim tyres might be a problem, but if driven with caution, you should do okay.

Dev my platina is only 9500 km driven and 1.9 months old . bike is like showroom condition. i am caring mx 10 kg . Because rest will on another 150 cc bajaj V. my weight is 95 kg. am driving from last 20 years.

u need more cc bike 100cc platina is not made for these tough roads..u will get disappointed by your bike..so make sure u got a heavy engine bikes such as bullet or pulser 220..

Spiti Circuit (8N/9D): Unique Spiti Tour Itinerary with Road Map

What is Spiti Circuit?

Spiti Circuit is a road trip through beautiful roads of Shimla and Kinnaur into the desert mountain valley of Spiti in a full circuit. The circuit that starts and ends at Chandigarh is accessible through two routes:

1) Chandigarh-Shimla-Narkanda-Rampur-Kinnaur-Nako-Tabo-Kaza-Kunzum Pass-Manali 2) Chandigarh-Manali-Atal Tunnel-Kunzum Pass-Kaza-Tabo-Nako-Kinnaur-Shimla

Spiti is the land of monasteries and open landscapes preserved deep in the mighty Himalayas. The Spiti and Pin Rivers making their way through the desert mountain valley positioned northeast in the hilly state of Himachal. Spiti has entirely a different terrain as compared to its better half, Lahaul .

Note : The road connecting Kaza and Manali remains closed until mid-June at Kunzum Pass due to heavy snow. Hence, Spiti Circuit is doable only during the months of late June, July and September.

In April, May, early June, we can travel to Spiti via Shimla on NH05 (Shimla – Narkanda – Kinnaur – Kaza – Kinnaur – Narkanda – Shimla).

In August and October, we can do Spiti tour via Manali (Manali – Atal Tunnel – Chandratal Lake – Kaza – Manali).

Starting from Delhi/Chandigarh – the amazing Spiti Circuit Tour passes through Shivalik hills, lesser Himalayan ranges of Shimla, and rugged steep valleys of Greater and Trans-Himalayan ranges.

Before reaching Kaza (or Kaja) – the headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district, the Spiti Valley Circuit route offers a colorful panorama of landscapes and horizons.

In about 1,100 km long Spiti circuit, the extraterrestrial-looking landscapes of Spiti Valley stand in stark contrast to the rest of the Greater and Lesser Himalayan region.

The circuit that goes through the highs and lows of Kinnaur, Spiti and Kullu valleys offers travelers a chance to explore the recently inaugurated all-weather and all-season Atal Tunnel that reduces travel time between Manali and Kaza by around 3-4 hours and distance by over 35 km. Travel time between Kaza and Manali has now been reduced to about 6-7 hours, which earlier used to be 10-12 hours,

Spiti – a scarcely populated region abutting the Indo-Tibet border – is the land of monasteries, barren but beautiful mountains of dizzying heights, hospitable and super-friendly people.

The Spiti river cuts the region into two parts. Originating from Kunzum Ranges, the river drains the region before its confluence with the Sutlej River at Khab.

Detailed Spiti Circuit Itinerary

Day 1: Delhi to Kotgarh via Shimla/Narkanda (410 km, 9 hrs)

Starting from Delhi/Chandigarh in the morning, we will take you on a joyride on the Himalayan Express Highway of NH 05 into one of the most ecologically diverse and lavishly green valleys of Shivalik. From Parwanoo, the road route runs along the Kalka-Shimla Railway route – a UNESCO World Heritage site — that was built in the late 19th and early 20th century by the Britishers. Chandigarh-Shimla highway meanders through Shivalik forests of pine, deodar, and oak trees.  By noon, we reach the capital city, Shimla.  Here we’ll have lunch and unwind for a moment. We’ll resume the drive and reach Kotgarh by evening — our pit stop for the overnight stay. Dinner and overnight stay at a homestay amidst an orchard of apples and cherries.

Day 2: Kotgarh to Sangla (157 km, 6 hrs drive)

Soon after breakfast, we’ll take a connecting road that will take us back on the NH5.  It descends through orchards of apples and cherries and meets NH5 at Bithal.  From Bithal, we’ll be driving along the right bank of the Satluj river.

The spotlight of the day is driving through the tunnel-shaped road stretch of Tranda Dhank on old Hindustan-Tibet (HT) road.  Driving under a roof formed by blasting and cutting the mountains on one side and a deep gorge on the other side will cause the adrenaline to spike to the max for sure.

From Karcham, we would drive over the bridge and enter the Sangla (Baspa valley). By the evening we would be reaching Sangla town. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Sangla.

Day 3: Sangla to Chitkul to Sangla to Kalpa (100 km, 5 hrs drive)

On day 3, we shall explore the Baspa valley. After breakfast, we would be heading toward Chitkul. The road to Chitkul runs along the right bank of the Baspa river. Constructed at the base of the valley, the 23km long road passes by the Mastrang ITBP check post, Bastseri, and Rakcham village.

At Chitkul, we will explore the village, visit Chitkul fort and Chitkul Mata temple. We will be heading back to Sangla soon. From Sangla, we would take the return trip to Karcham and head toward Chini village of Kalpa. By evening, we would reach Kalpa. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Kalpa.

Day 4: Day 4: Kalpa to Tabo (150 Km, 6 hrs)

Today, we drive along the Sutlej River until we reach a place called Khab. Khab is the place where Sutlej – flowing down from Shipki-La Pass – and River Spiti meet. From here the road ascends to Nako, a village perched on a slope of an elevation of about 12,000 feet.

Nako is a picturesque village offering some amazing views of perpetually snow-covered Manerang ranges. There is also a lake and a Buddhist monastery in the village.

Nako also serves as a basecamp for climbing the highest peak in Himachal — the Reo Purgyil.

After unwinding for a while, we’ll soon proceed towards Tabo village. By the evening we would be reaching Tabo. Overnight stay at a hotel/homestay.

Day 5: Tabo to Kaza via Dhankar Monastery (60 km, 3 hrs drive)

The history of the Tabo monastery dates back to 996 AD. It is the oldest continuously operating monastery in India. In the morning we’ll visit the monastery and surrounding Chortens and thereafter head to Sichling.

A connecting road from Sichling will take us to Dhankar. Dhankar monastery is perched on the edge of a mountain, and the landscape looks just out of a fairy tale setting.

After exploring the village and monastery, we head toward Kaza and reach there by evening. Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel/homestay.

Day 6: Kaza to Langza to Hikkim to Komic to Key to Kibber to Gete to Kaza (30 km, 3-4 hrs drive)

On day six of the Spiti Valley circuit tour, we’ll visit one of the highest regions of human settlement in the world.

Komic is the highest inhabited village in Asia. After Komic, our next pitstop is Hikkim – the highest post office in the world. A postcard will be your best chance to connect to the rest of the world as Hikkim village has no mobile or internet connectivity.

Our next stop will be Langza. Langza is famed for fossils of the Triassic-Jurassic period (200 million years old). In Langza we’ll pay a visit to the 1000-year-old Lang temple.

From Langza, we’ll make a return trip to Kaza and drive to Key Monastery. After visiting the monastery we would drive to Kibber village. In the evening, we would drive back to Kaza for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 7: Kaza to Chandra Taal Lake via Kunzum Pass (90 km, 3.5 hrs drive)

We start the day early as the weather at the 4550 m (15,060 feet) high Kunzum Pass can turn from bright sunshine into snow showers in a minute. Kunzum Pass acts as a crossover between Spiti Valley with Lahaul valley. When in Lahaul, you might notice that this valley is a lot greener than Spiti.

Kunzum Pass offers amazing views of the Chandrabhaga Ranges. It has a Hindu temple and a Buddhist Chorten dedicated to the eponymous Goddess Kunzum Mata.

After a short descent from the pass, we take a detour on a narrow road to Chandra Taal Lake. Chandra Taal – also known as the moon lake – is a beautiful lake at an altitude of 14,100 feet.

Nestled between the mountain ranges of Chandra Bhaga and Kunzum top, Chandra Taal is acclaimed and admired by travelers as one of the most beautiful lakes in the entire Himalayan region.

After enjoying the beautiful views, we will settle for a lakeside overnight stay in camps at Chandra Taal.

Day 8: Chandra Taal to Manali via Atal Tunnel (100 km, 4 hrs drive)

After savoring the pristine views of Chandra Taal Lake and surrounding mountain ranges, we would head for Manali. After a short halt at Batal, we drive along the Chandra River until a place called Gramphu.

From Gramphu we can take one of the two routes to Manali: 1. Gramphu – Rohtang – Kothi – Palchan – Manali 2. Gramhpu – Koksar – Chandra Bridge – Atal Tunnel – Solang Valley – Manali

We’ll reach Manali by the evening. Overnight stay at a hotel.

Day 9: Departure

Time to bid farewell. Drive to Delhi via Chandigarh.

Why Spiti Valley Circuit Tour?

The first and foremost reason to do Spiti Circuit is to explore the valley of lamas and lakes inside out. The circuit has so much to offer that it leaves travelers spellbound and awestruck in the glory of the remote mystic valley.

Why Travel to Spiti from Shimla Side?

Talking about the most suitable route for Spiti Circuit, you can enter Spiti Valley from Shimla side and exit from Manali or vice versa. However, we recommend doing Spiti Circuit from Shimla side because the sequence of natural wonders is laid out so well that it keeps you intrigued until the journey culminates in the tourist mecca of Himachal – Manali.

Plus, gaining altitude gradually is the best way to beat breathing difficulties and hypoxia when traveling to high altitudes. In the Shimla-Kinnaur-Spiti route, you steadily gain altitude while venturing into the cold desert of Spiti Valley. 

Spiti Valley is a high-altitude plateau – the average elevation from mean sea level is 4270 m. Air in this barren cold desert is thin and people coming from the plains often feel breathing difficulties when they gain altitude quickly.

On the Shimla-Kinnaur-Kaza route, there is almost a linear ascent (barring Narkanda-Rampur descent) from Shimla (2276 m), Narkanda (2700 m), Kalpa (2960m) to Kaza (3800 m).

If you choose the Manali-Kaza route, there is a sharp ascent from 2000 m at Manali to about 4550 m at Kunzum Pass – that too within a drive time of about 4-5 hours.

To proceed from Manali, you have to take Manali-Rohtang pass-Khazum Pass- Losar-Kaza and travel through Shimla; you have to take the Shimla-Kinnaur Valley-Tabo-Kaza road. Most travellers plan the road trip to enter from the Manali side and exiting through the Shimla side to cover the entire circuit.

The best transport for the Spiti Valley road trip is either Manali to Spiti bike trip or taking a bus that reaches Spiti through Rhotang and Khazum pass. You can board the bus from the main Manali Bus Station, and it will take around 10 to 12 hours to reach Spiti Valley.

Day 1 – Manali to Kaza via Rohtang Pass & Kunzum Pass – Overnight at Kaza

You drive – above Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass, over the river beds & boulders along Chandra River surrounded by mile long glaciers and Snow peaks, before you enter the magnificent Spiti Valley in the fading hours to witness the golden mountains of Spiti.

Day 2 – Kaza to Mudh (Pin Valley) to Tabo – Overnight at Tabo

Drive to Pin Valley – a tributary of the Spiti river, ‘Pin’ originates deep in the Trans Himalayan mountains leading to one of the ancient trade routes and popular trek of Bhaba Pass. It is also home to the magnificent Snow Leopard and several Trans Himalayan animals and rare birds protected under the National Parks of India. You’ll drive through this beautiful valley up to last village of Mudh before heading towards Tabo. Tabo is the second most popular town in Spiti Valley know for its Chos Khor Gompa (1020 AD) – a monastery which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site depicts the lineage of Buddhism.

Day 3 – Tabo to Dhankar to Hikkim, Komic to Langza – Overnight at Langza

An hour trek takes you to the beautiful Dhankar Lake situated above the Dhankar village is a great way to get introduced to High Himalayan Trekking. After Dhankar we drive on the twisting high roads of Spiti to reach Komic, the highest village in the world with a motor-able road at 4580m. Continue driving on these high roads above 4300m with the magnificent Himalayas jutting in front of your eyes to reach Langza – the most beautiful Himalayan Village with a 6303m Peak Mt. Day 4 – Langza to Kee, Kibber to Chandratal – Overnight at Chandratal Campsite

A trip to Spiti is incomplete without a visit to its iconic monastery at Kee. Built on top of a hill the main shrine is surrounded by residential quarters, administrative buildings are built in the shape of a pyramid. This ancient marvel is a photographers delight. You’ll further visit the villages high villages of Kibber, Chicham before continuing to Chandratal. The drive retraces your path back towards Manali over Kunzum Pass before heading upstream of Chandra river till you reach the Hidden Jewel of the Himalayan mountains, the blue Jewel, Chandratal literally translated as Moon Lake. Board a Volvo bus from Delhi/Chandigarh to Manali and get off at Bhuntar. This is an overnight journey, so please prepare accordingly.

Hikkim, a little village located at an altitude of 4000 metres has the world’s highest post office! Travellers from around the world commemorate their journey by sending postcards to friends and family from here.

Komic, our next stop, is regarded as the world’s highest village with a motorable road! Langza, our next stop, has the iconic Buddha statue overlooking the valley. Fancy a bargain on some ancient stuff? You can find children selling locally sourced fossils for dirt-cheap prices in this village.

We also visit the Key Gompa, a monastery with a rich history dating back more than a thousand years before returning to the town for an overnight stay.

Day 8 Kaza-Bhuntar

Our journey on the 8th day begins after a hearty breakfast. We set our sights on Kunzum La, a high-altitude mountain pass renowned for connecting the picturesque regions of Lahaul and Spiti. As we ascend towards Kunzum La, prepare to be awestruck by the breathtaking views that unfold.

Following our visit to Kunzum La, an exciting 50-kilometer off-roading adventure awaits us. This leg of the journey takes us along the banks of the Chandra River, where we navigate water crossings, traverse dirt roads, and encounter the beauty of the landscape that surrounds us.

As we continue onwards from Chatru to Bhuntar, a remarkable highlight awaits—the Atal Tunnel. This engineering marvel holds the distinction of being the world’s longest tunnel above 10,000 feet. The journey through this tunnel is an experience in itself, offering a seamless transition between the Kullu and Lahol.

Our route then leads us towards Bhuntar, passing through Manali along the way. The journey from Atal Tunnel to Bhuntar is a scenic one, with every twist and turn in the road revealing new wonders of the Himalayan landscape.

Throughout this leg of the journey, you’ll be treated to awe-inspiring vistas and thrilling road experiences. It’s a day filled with adventure and natural beauty as we make our way from Kaza to Bhuntar via Kunzum La and the Atal Tunnel.

Day 9 Departure from Bhuntar

After a good sleep, we will bid for you. At the breakfast, we will cheer some moments of togetherness that we will never forget for a lifetime in the hope of meeting soon again. We will click some memories of the entire group, you can bid your friends that you will have for a lifetime. After an overnight journey, you will reach Delhi or Chandigarh.

Environmental & Permit fee.

This fee covers any necessary permits or fees required for accessing certain areas or regions during the expedition. It ensures compliance with local regulations and helps to support the preservation of the environment.

A backup vehicle is provided to carry luggage. Participants can store their belongings in the backup vehicle, allowing them to ride their motorbikes without carrying heavy baggage.

First aid box and oxygen cylinder.

These are safety provisions included in case of any medical emergencies during the expedition. The first aid box contains basic medical supplies to address minor injuries or ailments, while the oxygen cylinder is used in case of altitude-related issues or breathing difficulties in high-altitude regions.

Experienced English-speaking road captain.

The road captain is a knowledgeable and experienced individual who leads the tour. They are fluent in English and guide the participants throughout the journey, ensuring smooth navigation and addressing any concerns or questions along the way.

Royal Enfield Himalayan.

This specifies the type of motorbike provided for the expedition. The Royal Enfield Himalayan is a popular model known for its reliability and suitability for adventure or off-road riding.

Fuel for the motorbikes is included in the tour package. This ensures that participants have a sufficient fuel supply to cover the distances travelled during the expedition.

• Personal expenses like Telephone, Laundry, Tips and Table Drinks etc.
• Any type of insurance-Medical, Accidental, theft.
• The cost incurred to transfer or tow the motorbike in case it is dropped on the way (Till our main office).
• Any lunch and other meals not mentioned in package inclusions.
• Security deposit per motorbike of £200 . As per the deposit policy (This is refundable at the end of the trip if there is no damage or spare parts used.).
• Any cost incurred due to extension, change of itinerary due to natural calamities, roadblocks, vehicle breakdown, union issues and factors beyond our control (to be paid by the client directly on the spot).

This is part of the information needed to process your visa. It’s important to have all the required details and documents ready before you start your application to ensure a smooth process. Remember, applying for an e-visa is a crucial step in planning your trip to India, so it’s best to take care of it well in advance of your travel dates. This way, you can look forward to your trip without any last-minute hassles.

India’s e-Tourist Visa system offers three types of visas for travellers wishing to visit the country, catering to different durations and types of visits. Here’s a brief overview:

1. One Month e-Tourist Visa : This visa option is suitable for both group and individual tourists. For group tourists, it became available from October 15, 2021, and for individual tourists from November 15, 2021. The visa is valid for one month, or 30 days, allowing for a double entry. If there are any additional expenses due to bad weather or any other reason beyond the control of the expedition operator on account of a hotel stay, transportation, meals, etc. extra bill will be raised.

Neither Motorbike Expeditions nor the participating partners/hotels will be responsible for the additional expenses.

Motorbike Expeditions is not responsible for any change in itinerary due to reasons beyond our control like changes in flight and train schedule, cancellation of flights/trains, political disturbances, natural phenomena, etc.

If any group member wants to leave the group in between the expedition then he/she has to pay the cost of transportation motorbike from the point of leaving the tour till the Main office  drop.

Group members would have to get their own riding gear. Wearing a helmet, carrying a valid ID proof &  driving license is mandatory.

All guests will be responsible for the safety and security of their own luggage. We will not be at all responsible for the damaged/missing/lost luggage. So carry a small daypack bag to carry all the expensive things with you.

Compensation for any damage/accident done by you during an expedition to another property/person would be directly payable to you.

The advisable maximum size of baggage should not exceed 60 litres. Remember that you have to carry the luggage to the backup vehicle and into the accommodation

Avoid High-Altitude Sickness

To avoid high-altitude sickness, here are a few steps you can take to prepare and mitigate the risks:

1. Stay Hydrated : Drink water in small sips every 10 minutes. Carrying a hydration bag can make it easier to stay hydrated without having to stop frequently. Hydration helps your body adjust to the altitude more efficiently.

2. Consider Medication : Diamox is a medication that can help prevent altitude sickness. However, it’s important to consult with your doctor before your trip, especially if you have any allergies or medical conditions. Your doctor can advise on the appropriate dosage and whether it’s safe for you to take.

3. Eat a High Potassium Diet: Foods high in potassium, such as bananas, avocados, and potatoes, can help your body adjust to high altitudes. A diet rich in these foods before and during your trip can be beneficial.

4. Oxygen Support : We carry oxygen cylinders for emergency use. Our guide is trained to recognize the symptoms of oxygen deprivation and will provide oxygen from a 10-15 litre big cylinder or a 2-litre portable cylinder if required. It’s critical to listen to your guide and communicate any discomfort you may be experiencing.

5. Stay Positive and Don’t Panic : A good mindset is crucial when dealing with high altitudes. Being aware that you’re in a high-altitude area with less oxygen is important, but it’s equally important not to panic. Stay positive and trust in your preparation and resources. Your guide will instruct you on what to do and how to handle different sections of your journey effectively. Listening to your guide and maintaining a positive outlook can significantly improve your ability to adapt and enjoy your high-altitude adventure.

6. Expedition Program Plan: The expedition program has been customized in such a way that we will gradually ascend from lower altitudes to higher altitudes day by day. This approach helps in acclimatizing to the changing oxygen levels and reducing the risk of high-altitude sickness. Gradual ascent allows your body time to adjust to the altitude changes, making the journey safer and more enjoyable. This methodical increase in altitude is designed to enhance your body’s adaptation process, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable experience as you reach higher elevations.

Remember, preparation and acclimatization are key. Allow your body time to adjust to the altitude by taking it easy the first few days and being mindful of your physical condition.

Spiti Trip Packages is an excellent guide to planning your Spiti travel diaries filled with adventure and exploration of the majestic Himalayan region. It is on the right bank of the Spiti River, adjacent to the Indo-China border, with only a population of 250 odd people and very limited options for Stays in Losar Village.

Most believe that Losar Village is one of the coldest places in the world with temperatures often going below -30ˆ C. It is the first inhabited village if one is travelling from Manali towards Kunzum Pass and often serves as a base camp for Trekkers and Motorbikers on a  Spiti Valley Bike Trip . 

The route from Manali-Kunzum pass- Losar opens only during the summer months from mid-June to October. SH30 Manali-Kaza road (state highway) remains closed for the rest 8 months due to heavy snowfall in winter. Although the road from Tabo to Kaza to Losar is open throughout the year, one needs to understand that Spiti Valley in winters is harsh and extreme with a lot of difficulties and hardships. One needs to be prepared both mentally and physically to face these adversities which the local people here have been facing for centuries with a warm smile and one of the greatest hospitality in the world.

Losar Village is still unexplored and apart from a handful of tourists who are on their trek to Chandratal Lake and Kunzum Pass, this village is not known to many.
