Gate 1 Travel Review: Are Their Organized Tours Worth It?

Gate 1 Travel Review: Are Their Organized Tours Worth It?

Have you ever wanted to take a trip where everything is planned for you? I was in the same boat when I found Gate 1 Travel, which offers escorted coach tours all over the world. If you're wondering whether this is the route for you, I did all the work to give you the inside scoop!

walking tours gate 1

One of the best parts of traveling is getting to decide where you want to go and what you want to see. However, it can also be the most stressful part of traveling.

How do you make sure you see everything you want to see, get the right hotels, and eat at the right restaurants, all while staying on budget? One option I often think about to help alleviate that stress is to book a tour that covers all the nitty-gritty details!

When you're thinking about organized travel, you'll come across so many tours and guides that'll it'll hurt your brain.

One of those is Gate 1 Travel. So, the real question is does it beat out other options when booking tours?

I wanted to find out so that you'll have the essential info on its tours, prices, destinations, and more! This way you'll be making a decision with lots of valuable knowledge.

Gate 1 travel logo

What Is Gate 1 Travel?

If you're not a fan of traveling with strangers, my advice is to go with a travel agency or plan your own trip. Don't go with Gate 1 Travel or other travel groups. Plan and go discover on your own instead with Pilot!

That's because you will definitely be exploring with a group if you book with with Gate 1 Travel.

Numbers fluctuate, but if you're keen on staying in a smaller group, be sure to check out Gate 1's Small Group tours . Also known as Discovery Tours, there are no more than 22 travelers on these trips, so you won't have to worry about there being too many people with you.

‍ Discovery Tours also allow you to get up close and personal with the country you're visiting in a way that often isn't possible in larger, escorted tours.

How Large Are Gate 1 Travel Groups?

If you're not a fan of traveling with strangers, my advice is to go with a travel agency or plan your own trip. Don't go with Gate 1 Travel.

How Do I Book a Tour?

If you're interested in booking a tour with Gate 1 Travel, you'll first need to make an account.

You can head to the login page to do this. Once you've done that, you can start booking!

You'll select your tour region, followed by the country you want to visit and the tour that appeals most to you.

Choose your departure date, and decide whether you want flights included. You can then select those flights and any optional tours you may want to do during your trip.

What's Included in Gate 1 Travel Tours?

When booking a tour with Gate 1, you want to know what's included.

Something I liked to see is that every trip offers a "land only" and "air & land" price, so you can decide whether to have your flights included. Flights do only go to and from select cities, depending on your tour dates.

Escorted tours will include the following:

  • Accommodation for the nights of the tour
  • Hotel taxes and service charges
  • Transport between cities
  • Certain meals (what's included will be outlined in the tour details)
  • Sightseeing per the itinerary in an air-conditioned coach with a guide!

Not included is airfare for land-only trips, any visa-related fees, and optional extras you may decide to add to your tour.

How Do I Contact Gate 1 Travel Customer Service?

Whether you have a question or a complaint, it's never a bad idea to know how to contact customer service.

Customer Reviews

Overall, travelers seem to be satisfied with Gate 1's services and its tours.

Many of the complaints speak to packages booked with flights and how flight cancellations or changes have upheaved entire trips. Others have also mentioned the mismatch of travel credits promised versus ones they actually offer.

Other travelers have complained about Gate 1's customer service as being difficult to reach and not entirely helpful. It sounds like quite a few individuals had a tough time getting a full refund for their trip, even with travel insurance, when booking with them.

Whether it's that explanations can't be given, refunds are not fully issued, or travelers are sent in circles, it sounds like customer service is a hit or miss.

Other complaints have also touched on the itineraries being too packed to truly enjoy what you're seeing or to feel rested enough for them.

Is Gate 1 Travel Worth It?

After all my reading, my advice is to proceed with caution. Here's why.

My first impression when I got onto the website is that this is mainly targeting an older audience, with their branding outdated to the 2000s. That's not a judging criteria, but just a red flag in my opinion.

While Gate 1 Travel offers a lot of packaged tours, the volume of travelers who have had their trips impacted by flights booked through Gate 1 is concerning.

Instead, I would avoid the flight risks by opting for land-only tours. If you go this route, Gate 1 does offer tours all over the world, so it's a good place to at least browse through when you're trying to make a decision.

They also offer other kind of tours like independent vacations, European river cruises, and customized international vacation packages, but it's honestly not for me. The price is way too expensive and I can frankly plan it myself.

They also seem to charge a bit more than the actual ticket for many attractions, which to me seems like a dealbreaker unless it is actually hard for me to get the travel reservations myself.

In Gate 1 Travel's benefit, they sure do have tons of locations. From Paris to Peru, From Ecuador to Budapest, their tour packages extend to many destinations around the world. They also offer discount travel packages there and here, so that's something to consider for all you deal-seekers.

Keep in mind that some comments were made about the itineraries being a bit packed. So, if you're more of a relaxed traveler, I would be very careful going with Gate 1 Travel.

That being said, if you want to do and see as much as humanly possibly, Gate 1 could be the tour company for you!

If you like the idea of booking a tour but still aren't convinced that Gate 1 Travel is right for you, make sure to also check out companies like EF and Intrepid !

Our Rating: 3.1/5

  • Tours all over the world
  • Small group options for more immersive experiences
  • Includes accommodation, and guided coach tours
  • Options for smaller group tours
  • Flight cancellations can result in trip cancellation
  • Poor customer service
  • Some feedback of packed schedules

Touring Switzerland – with Gate 1 Travel

From majestic alpine scenes and pristine lakes to picturesque medieval towns, Switzerland is a beautiful European country that offers much more than just its famed skiing. A culturally diverse nation, Switzerland is influenced by a number of surrounding countries. Three languages – German, French, and Italian – are spoken in various regions of the country.

We decided to tour Switzerland with  Gate 1 Travel  on its 10-Day Classic Switzerland with the Glacier Express tour. The tour included a perfect blend of nature and culture. Spending a few days in the Alps, we got to check off one of our bucket list sights – the majestic Matterhorn. We also got to experience the history and charm of cities like Geneva, Zurich, St. Moritz, Lucerne, and Zermatt.

Zurich

Old Town Zurich

The first of Switzerland’s Old Towns – Zurich

Our tour began in Zurich, Switzerland’s major finance center and largest city where German is the predominate language. Zurich’s charm is its “Old Town”, the historic heart of the city. Our Gate 1 Tour Manager, Beatrice, conducted a short walking orientation of Old Town providing interesting facts and details. We then had some “free time” to explore a little on our own. This orientation/free time approach was done in all of our destinations.

Lining both sides of the Limmat River and the shoreline of Lake Zurich is an inviting mix of small traditional stores and creative boutiques, together with inviting restaurants and sidewalk cafes. Enjoy a river or lake cruise; explore some of the iconic churches; or just wander the pedestrianized streets and soak in the history. Old Town encompasses what was the entire city before 1893.

A colorful street in Zurich’s Old Town

Geneva – Switzerland’s most cosmopolitan city

Our next destination was Geneva, another lakeside city. The landlocked country boasts more than 1,500 lakes, from small alpine lakes to grand bodies of water known worldwide. Fed by the snowmelt of the surrounding Alps, these crystal clear lakes offer post-card worthy views, charming village scenes, and numerous recreation opportunities.

Lake Geneva

View of Lake Geneva from our hotel’s cocktail lounge

Geneva is Switzerland’s most cosmopolitan city and where the headquarters of the European United Nations and the Red Cross are based. Our tour took us by the UN and Red Cross campuses and then we drove to some of the city’s top attractions – the Reformation Wall and The Horloge Fleuri, the large flower clock in the “ Jardin Anglais ” (English Garden). French is the primary language here. An optional Gate 1 excursion was a cruise on Lake Geneva to the small medieval French village of Yvoire.

Gate 1 Travel does its best to make travel-day lunch stops more than just food and restroom stops. On our way to Geneva we stopped in Bern, Geneva’s capital city.  Bern’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts wonderful Renaissance architecture. The Zytglogge is a landmark medieval tower in Bern, Switzerland. Built in the early 13th century, it has served the city as a guard tower, prison, clock tower, center of urban life, and civic memorial.

Our travel day from Geneva to Zermatt also included a wonderful stop in the lakeside town of Montreux. Known as the “Swiss Riviera,” Montreux is home to the medieval Chillon Castle. A tour of the castle by a local guide is included with the Gate 1 tour. Our last travel day – to Lucerne – included another pleasant lunch stop in the Principality of Liechtenstein nestled in the heart of the Alps. These planned stops provided wonderful interludes to the bus rides.

The home of The Matterhorn

Our favorite Swiss destination was situated at the foot of the “world’s most beautiful mountain.” This may be what  Zermatt Tourism  says about The Matterhorn, but we are not ones to argue this opinion. The Matterhorn’s landscape is a unique natural spectacle in Zermatt looming over the breathtaking Alpine panorama. This Switzerland landmark – certainly the most famous mountain in Europe – offers a paradise for all nature-lovers looking for peace and quiet. Its symmetric pyramid shape – a rocky tooth reaching into the sky – presents an indelible image. One we will not soon forget.

The car-free village of Zermatt packs a lot into a small area.  A variety of shops, cafés, bars and hotel lounges offer plenty of excitement. A number of the houses in the village are fairytale Swiss chalets dating back more than 500 years. Our Tour Manager gave an informative walking tour of the town providing various details of the different ways to see The Matterhorn up close.

One experience that we suggest you don’t miss is the 33-minute cog railway ride from Zermatt to  Gornergrat . At 10,000 feet of elevation we were surrounded by the stunning alpine world surrounding Zermatt. And, of course, outstanding views of the 14,691-foot high Matterhorn.

At Gornergrat we had an amazing 360-degree view of an alpine wonderland of 29 mountain peaks topping 13,000 feet. After experiencing the breathtaking views from the many platforms and terraces, we toasted our trip to this alpine splendor with a glass of wine on the outside terrace of the Kulmhotel Gornergrat. A perfect ending to a spectacular experience.

St. Moritz – glamor, sports, and nature

Our next stop was another ski town – the alpine playground for the rich and famous – St. Moritz. Birthplace of alpine winter tourism in 1864, St. Moritz has hosted two Winter Olympics (1928 and 1948). Today the village attracts guests from all over the world to revel in the modern Alpine lifestyle. We started our day with “Buongiorno,” as Italian is the predominant language. We enjoyed a delightful walk around Lake St. Moritz which offered wonderful views of the town and the surrounding mountains. An optional excursion offered here was a lovely carriage ride through the Val Roseg, a beautiful  country valley.

St. Moritz

A view St. Moritz from across the lake

The importance of an experienced tour manager and the support of a travel company like Gate 1 became evident when our tour experienced a significant interruption in the itinerary. Originally our journey from Zermatt to St. Moritz was to ride on the Glacier Express, considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world. However, the train could not complete the journey to St. Moritz because of rock slides. Beatrice and Gate 1 took no time in arranging to have the tour’s bus return from its trip to St. Moritz, and we completed the trip to St. Moritz by bus. The trip by bus – although not by the famed Glacier Express – was still breathtaking!

Switzerland’s most picturesque city

Chapel Bridge

Chapel Bridge – Lucerne

The city many consider to be Switzerland’s prettiest, Lucerne, was our final destination. Like Zurich and Geneva, Lucerne has a charming historic Old Town with buildings dating back to the 15 th  century. Our hotel was located on Lake Lucerne, and just a 15-minute stroll on the lakeside path brought us to Chapel Bridge and the city’s Old Town. The covered wooden footbridge has the distinction of being the world’s oldest wooden bridge dating back to the 14 th  century. Our Tour Manager again provided an informative orientation of the city, and its top attractions including the moving Lion Monument, the Chapel and Spreuer Bridges, and Old Town. And like Zurich, German is spoken throughout the city.

Lion Monument in Lucerne

Lucerne’s Lion Monument – a commemeration to the Swiss Guards massacred during the French Revolution

Another alpine experience we recommend is the optional excursion to the top of Mt. Pilatus, which is located just minutes from Lucerne. One way to the top of the 6,800-foot peak is by cog railway. With a maximum 48-degree gradient, it is the steepest cog railway in the world. In addition to wonderful views of the Alps in the distance, the views of Lake Lucerne and the city of Lucerne are outstanding.

Why a tour with  Gate 1?

We decided to travel with Gate 1 after so many of our friends strongly recommended their tours. Founded in 1981, Gate 1 Travel has 42 years of experience offering escorted tours at affordable prices. Its slogan is “More of the World for Less.” Having conducted thousands of tours across 7 continents, including escorted tours, river cruises, small group tours, walking tours, and independent travel packages, Gate 1 maintains easy-to-reach information service offices in many major destination cities with round-the-clock support for travelers. Hotel accommodations are 4 or 5 star rated. At our introductory dinner on our first night in Zurich, we learned that of the 27 passengers on the tour, 23 of them were return customers – a testimony to the popularity of Gate 1 tours.

Gate 1 prides itself on their expert tour managers. Our tour manager was very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. In addition to providing a wealth of information about the history and culture of the cities and attractions that we visited, Beatrice also offered essential and practical daily tidbits. All of her restaurant suggestions were spot on. We felt the pace and structure of our tour was a perfect balance of group orientation and touring with ample opportunity to explore and experience on our own.

Planning a Trip to Europe: Your 10-Step Guide

9-Day Enchanting Italy

Trevi Fountain, Rome, Italy 2024

Could any European bucket list be considered complete without a visit to Italy? Gate 1 Travel’s streamlined 9-Day Enchanting Italy tour offers an unforgettable taste of the country’s most famous cities and sights. The trip begins in Venice, where you’ll have plenty of time to explore this unique island city with its winding canals and alleyways. Visit a glassblowing factory on Murano Island and take a guided walking tour of the city’s top sights, such as St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace.

The journey continues through the Tuscan countryside, stopping for a wine tasting at a local farm. Check the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa off your bucket list before continuing to Florence, where art lovers will be in absolute heaven delving into the Uffizi Gallery’s treasure trove of iconic works. Of course, no Tuscan visit would be complete without reveling in the region’s famous wines and fare in an authentic countryside vineyard and rustic family farm.

Finally, stop in the hill town of Assisi to view the famous Basilica of St. Francis. Then, it’s on to Rome to tour the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica and explore ancient Roman sites like the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Arch of Constantine.

10 Day Croatia & Slovenia

Lake Bled, Slovenia 2022

Some of Europe’s most underrated spots and hidden gems await on Gate 1 Travel’s 10-Day Croatia & Slovenia tour. This trip jumps off in the historic Croatian capital of Zagreb, where the charming cobblestoned streets entice visitors into leisurely strolls punctuated with stops at the city’s lively cafes and restaurants.

Crossing into Slovenia, you’ll be mesmerized by the stunning scenery of Lake Bled’s emerald waters dotted with the fairytale-like island church. In the lively capital of Ljubljana, you can indulge in regional culinary specialties and wines at the open-air markets and trendy restaurants.

From there, you’ll be transported to a natural wonderland back in Croatia at Plitvice Lakes National Park, where thundering waterfalls and lush hiking trails connect 16 terraced turquoise lakes. The adventure culminates on the Adriatic coast, where you’ll soak up the sun and old-world charms of Split and Dubrovnik.

11-Day Germany, Switzerland & Austria

Switch to a comfortable bus for an equally scenic drive through the Black Forest region en route to Switzerland. There, you’ll spend two relaxing nights in the charming lakeside city of Lucerne, home to iconic attractions like the Chapel Bridge and Mt. Pilatus. You can indulge in iconic Swiss specialties like fondue, chocolate, and cheeses while soaking up the mesmerizing mountain panoramas.

Over the next few days, you’ll explore the Austrian Alps and enjoy the baroque splendor of cities like Innsbruck, Salzburg, and Vienna.
