Napa Valley Wine Trolley – Daily Tour

Price: From $125 per person Duration: 6.5 hours

Explore California wine country aboard one of the Napa Valley Wine Trolleys, which resemble San Francisco's iconic open-air cable cars. The six-hour Daily Tour stops at three wineries in the lower half of the valley; specific wineries vary from day to day. Drivers double as guides and provide information about the region and its best-known product, and patrons generally find them to be both very informative and amusing.

The tour departs from the Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa at 10 a.m. daily, with pickups at select Napa Valley hotels starting earlier. Tickets include transportation, guide gratuity and a picnic lunch, but exclude winery tasting fees, which range from $30 to $40 per person at each winery. If you're looking to visit Castello di Amorosa (the popular winery that resembles a castle) in particular, take the Up Valley Tour .

Drivers/guides earn enthusiastic praise for being knowledgeable, professional and personable. Tours typically depart from a central location in Napa (for those driving into Napa), but pickups from nearby hotels are also available. Group sizes range from eight to 12 participants.

Tickets include a picnic lunch at one of the stops as well as bottled water aboard the bus. Tasting fees at the wineries are not included. Platypus also offers tours of Sonoma Valley as well as private tours.

The bike tours, which are restricted to six participants, begin in Yountville at 10:30 a.m. and end around 4:30 p.m.; this includes bike fitting and riding instruction.

Tickets include use of an e-bike and helmet as well as lunch from Bouchon Bakery, a local favorite. They do not cover winery tasting fees, though some of these fees may be waived with a minimum wine purchase. The tour covers a total of 12 to 17 miles, with an average 3 to 6 miles between stops. If that seems overwhelming, you can opt for a half-day outing with a stop at one winery.

Frequently Asked Questions

August through October, which coincides with the harvesting season, is the best time to visit Napa Valley . March through May is also a nice, often less-crowded time to visit.

The best Napa wine tours start at around $120 per person; fees will increase depending on tour inclusions (such as meals, gratuities and tastings). Prices may also fluctuate based on tour group size as well as the time of year and day of week.

Yes, it is recommended that you tip both your tour guide and your tasting host at each vineyard. Some tours include gratuities in rates, which may be something you want to look for when booking your tour.

None of the wineries have a dress code, so opt for casual (but not too casual) and comfortable. Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross has previously traveled to Napa Valley, visiting select wineries on her own and also with a tour. She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. She used her personal experience and insights from other travelers to determine the best wine tours in Napa Valley. Cheers!

Sequoia Grove

8338 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 944-2945

Why Guests Love It: Classic Cabernets, Boutique Feel, Food & Wine Pairings

Sequoia Grove is almost the little engine that could in Napa, not because it’s any less mighty but because it’s lowkey and relaxed. It’s definitely worth stopping in, though, because the wood-timber building surrounded by sequoias and cypresses gives a distinctive Northern Californian feel. Everything produced is fantastic but take note of the quintessential cedar notes in their Cabs. They’re a standout.

Grgich Hills

1829 St Helena Hwy, Rutherford

(707) 963-2784

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Picnic Tastings, Eco-Focused

Named after its founders, Mike Grgich and Austin Hills, Grgich Hills is one of the more legendary wineries in Napa. Founded in 1977, it has consistently produced stellar wines to be tasted in an equally stellar stone building. Bonus: As of 2006, it uses only estate-grown fruit from its organic, biodynamic, and solar powered winery.

Corison Winery

987 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-0826

Why Guests Love It: Critically Acclaimed Wines, Female Winemaker, Vineyard Views

True trailblazers seem in short supply these days but thankfully Cathy Corison is still here. Year in and year out, she crafts award-winning Cabs from specific vineyard designations. She also produces a stunning Gewürztraminer and Riesling, both of which sing when paired with food. Be sure to snap up what you can because her wines consistently sell out.

401 St Helena Hwy South, St Helena

(707) 967-2626

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Artwork, Female Winemaker, Exceptional Wines

If the whimsical rabbit sculpture isn’t enough to make you stop, the wines most certainly will! Kathryn Hall comes by her craft genetical, having worked in her family’s vineyards north in Mendocino before striking out on her own. And although the Cabs are fabulous, cross the varietal line and taste their Merlots. You’ll be wowed.

The Salon at Heitz Cellar

436 St Helena Hwy, St Helena

(707) 963-2047

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Cheese & Charcuterie Boards, Age-Worthy Wines

Heitz has been around since 1961 – yes, you read that correctly. Everything about Heitz speaks to tradition, from the vineyard selections to the woodblock-esque labels. It’s worth stocking up here and laying some down to age because Heitz is known to develop beautifully for years.

Freemark Abbey

3022 St Helena Hwy N, St Helena

(800) 963-9698

Why Guests Love It: Historical Winery, Stunning Architecture, Library Wines

Housed in a historic stone building that dates back to 1899, Freemark Abbey has consistently been a winery for over a century (except that during that little hiccup known as Prohibition). It further cemented its name in oenological history by being one of only twelve wineries invited to compete in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Today, the wines remain standouts and tasting here brings guests on a trip through Napa history.

Sterling Vineyards

1111 W Dunaweal Lane, Calistoga

(800) 726-6136

Why Guests Love It: Breathtaking Views, Tram Rides, Award Winning Wines

Sterling Vineyards unfortunately sustained significant damage during the Glass Fire of 2020 and has since been undergoing reconstruction. The good news for everyone is that it is due to reopen in the Spring of 2023! Sterling has been a longtime favorite because of the stunning views. Plan ahead to book a tour that includes a tram ride to the top of the vista point and sip through their lineup. It’s worth the wait.

Tank Garage Winery

1020 Foothill Blvd, Calistoga

(707) 942-8265

Why Guests Love It: Art Deco Architecture, Intriguing Wines, Small Production

Of all wine tasting experiences through Napa, Tank Garage is probably the most unique because it’s located in a 1930s Art Deco gas station! Tank isn’t for the faint-of-heart – the people there are known for sprinkling salty language around, but they sure provide a fun experience. The wines are just as interesting with everything from orange pét-nat to carbonic Grenache.

Top Napa Wineries along the Silverado Trail

Silverado Trail runs somewhat parallel to St Helena Highway on the east side of Napa. The two are close enough together to make it very easy to toggle between, but Silverado is decidedly quieter because village centers are found on St Helena Highway.

Chateau Montelena

1429 Tubbs Lane, Calistoga

(707) 942-5105

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Napa History, VIP Service

Chateau Montelena is the perfect start to a day of winetasting. This gorgeous stone chateau is home to some legendary wines, including the Chardonnay that beat out white Burgundies in the 1976 Judgement of Paris. Taste through their elegant line up of Cabs or go rogue and try their Riesling – everything is stunning.

Clos Pegase Winery

1060 Dunaweal Ln, Calistoga

(707) 942-4981

Why Guests Love It: Sleek Architecture, Quirky Sculptures, Cave Tours

Clos Pegase breaks rank with modern architecture and the quirky “friendship bench” but the wines are no less delightful. With a range of flight options, guests are encouraged to taste through all that Napa has to offer in a relaxing, elegant environment. Be sure to try all of the reds.

Honig Vineyard & Winery

850 Rutherford Rd, Rutherford

(707) 963-4272

Why Guests Love It: Eco Tours, Sustainable Winery, Fabulous Whites

Honig means ‘honey’ in German, which is denoted with the whimsical bees on Honig labels. And, Honig is true to its love of bees by being certified sustainable and solar powered. Book the Eco tour to learn all about Honig’s green practices before tasting through some beautiful wines, including their Sauvignon Blanc.

8445 Silverado Trail, Rutherford

(800) 686-6272

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Classic Sparkling Wine, Cheese Pairings

Is it bubbly time yet? Mumm Napa provides the best of French winemaking and Napa views. Guests can choose to taste through the delightful sparkling wines in a variety of settings, from patio seating to terrace tasting with cheese pairings.

8383 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 963-5188

Why Guests Love It: Beautiful Views, Organic Farming, Warm Hospitality

Although technically in another town, ZD is just down the road from Mumm and is definitely worth the stop. While ZD may be smaller than some of the huge Napa wineries, it is no less impressive and produces rich, luscious wines that manage to maintain perfect balance. Taste through the lineup, or book a tour with sample of library wines.

Quixote Winery

6126 Siverado Trail, Napa

(707) 944-2659

Why Guests Love It: Quirky Atmosphere, Estate Tours, Food & Wine Pairings

And now for something completely different! To experience Quixote Winery is to experience a quirky, carnivalesque atmosphere while tasting through intriguing, small production wines. All fruit sourced from Stags Lead District, their wines sell out quickly so be sure to stock up while you can.

Stags’ Leap Winery

6150 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 257-5790

Why Guests Love It: Historic Winery, Beautiful Views, Exceptional Service

Stags’ Leap is another legendary Napa winery and is a must for those wanting to taste through the best the valley has to offer. Indulge in a porch tasting to experience the stunning views alongside the stunning wines. And, be sure to grab a bottle of Petite Sirah, which is a perennial favorite among critics.

Clos du Val Winery

5330 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 261-5212

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Views, Creative Events, High End Hospitality

Clos du Val is nestled back among the vines, providing a picturesque experience for visitors. Book a tasting in advance, or check out events like Apéro nights, or sparkling wine brunches. No matter what you try, you’ll love the attention to detail that weaves through both the wines and the estate.

4240 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 257-2345

Why Guests Love It: Stunning Architecture, Luxurious Pairings, Exceptional Service

Darioush is sort of like Madonna or Cher in that it needs no other name: Darioush is enough. And, for those that know it, the name Darioush means opulence and grandeur unlike anything else in Napa. Grounded in Persian culture, hospitality is elevated to an art form here. Be sure to reserve the Signature Mezza tasting to try the wines alongside traditional Persian mezze plates.

Judd’s Hill Winery & MicroCrush

2332 Silverado Trail, Napa

(707) 255-2332

Why Guests Love It: Small Production, Family Owned, Relaxed Environment

Judd’s Hill is an anomaly in Napa because it’s lowkey and very hands on. Still family owned, guests are encouraged to book tastings, pairings, or even play winemaker and blend their own wines! Another charming experience is their annual poetry contest, for which winners receive a 3-liter bottle but the real prize is being part of this 20+ year tradition.

It’s got such a throwback quality that we can’t help but love it. Whether you want a swim in a mineral pool, an indulgent mud bath, or a frolic on a tree swing, Dr. Wilkinson’s has you covered.

Travel Logistics: Getting To and Around Napa

Napa the city is towards the southern end of Napa the valley and is only about an hour north of San Francisco. Visitors coming from further afield can fly to either San Francisco International Airport or Oakland International Airport and drive from there. Since it is a quick jaunt from the Bay Area, it tends to be very busy on the weekends so midweek tastings often are the most relaxing (and available). You can check current flight deals into either airport right here.

Napa is also quite close to Sonoma Valley, which runs parallel on the west. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience. Another great option is to leverage Green Dream Tours’ expertise to get a taste of both Napa and Sonoma on the same day. They offer round-trip transport from San Francisco, stopping at some exceptional boutique wineries in Sonoma and Napa.

The Ultimate Napa Valley Wineries Tasting Guide

Frequently Asked Questions about Napa Wineries

What is the best time of year to visit napa wineries.

The best time to visit Napa wineries is during the spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) months, when the weather is pleasant and the scenery is spectacular. Spring offers vibrant wildflowers and lush green landscapes, while fall showcases the grape harvest and the changing colors of the vine leaves. Summer is also a popular time, but can be crowded and hot, while winter is quieter and offers a more intimate experience.

How do I plan my visit to Napa wineries?

When planning your visit to Napa wineries, start by researching the wineries you’d like to visit, as there are over 400 to choose from. Consider factors such as the types of wines you enjoy, the winery’s ambiance, and any special experiences they offer. We list most of the best wineries in Napa and group them by location to create an efficient itinerary. Read our detailed guide to help you plan your trip. Keep in mind that many wineries in Napa require reservations for tastings and tours, so be sure to book ahead.

How many Napa wineries should I visit in one day?

To fully enjoy your Napa wine tasting experience without feeling rushed, it’s generally recommended to visit 3-5 wineries in one day. This allows ample time to savor the wines, explore the properties, and take breaks for meals or relaxation. However, be sure to have a designated driver on hand or hire one of our preferred drivers or private tours referenced in this guide.

What are the costs associated with wine tasting in Napa?

Tasting fees at Napa wineries can vary widely, typically ranging from $25 to $50 per person, with some high-end or exclusive wineries charging even more. Some wineries offer tastings that are refundable with a wine purchase, while others may waive the fee for wine club members. Guided tours, food pairings, and special experiences may come at an additional cost. To manage expenses, consider setting a daily budget for tastings and prioritize wineries that best align with your preferences.

How should I get around Napa Valley when visiting wineries?

There are several transportation options for exploring Napa wineries, including self-driving, hiring a private driver or tour guide, joining a group wine tour, or using a designated driver service. Each option has its advantages and drawbacks, but it’s crucial to ensure responsible and safe transportation, especially if you plan to consume alcohol during your tastings. We give Winetravelers plenty of options in this guide to get around to Napa’s best wineries safely. Ask us any questions or for recommendations in the guide’s comments.

The 8 Best Napa Wine Tours

purple grains hanging on a vine in Napa Valley

Napa Valley is easily one of the most famous wine-producing regions in the world, and last year nearly four million people headed there — it is big business for Northern California!

Of course, if you plan on spending some time in Napa Valley and nearby Sonoma, you’ll most likely want to explore some of the 600 wineries in the area. A great way to do this — both to get some local, insider knowledge and so that there’s no need to drink and drive — is to take a Napa wine tour.

There are nearly as many wine tour options as there are vineyards. I’ve listed some of my favorites here, and you can decide which fits your style and, more importantly, your budget. Just remember that you’ll usually also have to pay tasting fees on top of the tour costs — these vary between $20 and $40 — though many will waive that fee if you buy some wine. Also don’t forget, especially if you’re coming from outside the United States, that you’ll need to be 21 or over to join these tours, though some allow children to tag along.

1. Napa Valley Wine Trolley

If you’re after something a bit different, then the Napa Valley Wine Trolley is a good way to go. Instead of a regular tour bus, you’ll ride on a replica of a cable car. It’s an open-air car, of course, so make sure you pick the right weather to try this.

Tours leave from the Oxbow Market in Napa; a $99 tour includes four wineries and a casual picnic-style lunch, plus unlimited bottled water and soft drinks between tastings. You can upgrade to the full-day Castle tour ($139), which includes a two-hour stop and tasting at Castello di Amorosa.

2. Napa Valley Bike Tours

Of course, being a valley full of vineyards, Napa is a really scenic place, so exploring it by bicycle is a great option. Napa Valley Bike Tours offers either guided or self-guided rides, leaving from their store in Yountville. The popular half-day guided tour is $124 per person, with two winery visits and a great guide who’ll give you the full story of the area.

The handy part about the self-guided tours is that besides being able to visit the wineries you choose at your own pace, you still get a box lunch, and any wine you buy will be picked up for you (riding with wine in your backpack gets old really fast). Self-guided tours cost $114 per person and also include comfy bikes, helmets, and all the planning info you need.

3. Calistoga Bikeshop

Another bicycle option is Calistoga Bikeshop , a popular rental shop that also runs guided day tours for $150, including a hybrid bike, a picnic lunch, and pick-up for any wine you buy. The guides plan a unique route depending on what the group members want, starting from their shop in Calistoga.

If you have an extra day in the area and don’t need more wine, Calistoga also offers great mountain biking trips to the Palisades or along the Oat Hill Mine Trail.

4. Platypus Wine Tours

Platypus brands itself as the “anti-wine-snob wine tour,” so if you want to have a fun day learning more about wine, then this is a good choice. (The name is memorable, but you won’t actually see a platypus anywhere in Napa Valley, in case you’re wondering.)

Platypus runs small-group trips, taking in four wineries for $110 (including a picnic lunch), focusing on small and medium-sized, usually family-owned wineries. You can choose from tours centered on Sonoma Valley, Napa Valley, or North Sonoma.

5. Active Wine Adventures

As the name suggests, Active Wine Adventures offers tours that include more than just wine tasting, so it’s a great way to explore Napa Valley. For example, the Hike & Wine tours start with a two-hour hike in some of the valley’s beautiful landscapes and move on to a lunch and winery tasting experience. These cost $139 plus lunch because you can choose from a high-end restaurant lunch or a vineyard picnic. They offer similar tours in the Sonoma area, too.

6. Green Dream Tours

Try some wine and help the world. Green Dream has a focus on sustainability: besides using green business practices, it also buys carbon offsets to balance its use of fuel. Their Napa Valley tours ($144, $154 on weekends) are among the few where the tasting fees at three boutique wineries are included.

Green Dream also offers a combo tour, taking in three wineries across Sonoma and Napa Valley, with lunch at the Oxbow Public Market ($139 weekdays, $149 weekends). For visitors to San Francisco, there’s a combo with a tour of Alcatraz plus two Sonoma boutique wineries, for $179.

7. Small Lot Wine Tours

If you’re coming by car to the Napa Valley region, then Small Lot can be a really budget-friendly way to enjoy a wine tour. They provide a tour guide who’ll drive your car for you for the day, and design a tour route just right for you, depending on the kind of wine you want to taste, what you want to do for lunch, and whether you’re planning on buying wine. At $50 per hour (with a four-hour minimum), if you’ve got a car full of friends, this can work out to be one of the cheapest ways to explore Napa but still have local expert advice.

8. Napa Valley Wine Country Tours

Napa Valley Wine Country Tours offer full-day trips from San Francisco, including a Golden Gate Bridge photo opportunity, to four wineries in the Napa and Sonoma regions. Tours include a picnic lunch and are usually $119 per person (sometimes there are $99 specials on the website).

For something a bit different, they also run wine tours around the Napa Valley in an open-top convertible limousine, including a castle visit, for $150.

There are so many options for touring the Napa Valley and experiencing all the wine culture the area has to offer, depending on your tastes and preferences. These suggestions should ensure that you have a great day out exploring one of the world’s most famous wine regions.

Wine Tastings $50 and Under

March 14, 2024.

Several Napa Valley wineries offer great wine tasting introductions for a relatively approachable price. We’ve pulled together a list of wineries , tasting rooms , and wine shops with tasting fees at $50 or under to help guide you on some affordable wine tasting options.

While there are many reasons to visit Napa Valley, enjoying incredible wine tasting experiences are surely at the top. As the premier wine region in the United States and one of the top winemaking regions in the world, there are a plethora of wines to taste and wineries to visit, and tasting fees can add up.

Over the past few years, the trend for wine tastings in Napa Valley has turned towards seated experiences, often one hour to 90 minutes in length, and consist of wine educators walking patrons through a flight of three to six wines. The wines showcased are typically small-production wines and/or winery exclusives.

Overall, the range of wine tasting options offered in Napa Valley can be as straightforward or as elaborate as you desire. Elevated experiences might include food pairings or tours of the winemaking facilities, wine caves , or vineyards, while simpler tastings might feature a flight of three wines on the back deck overlooking vineyards. No matter your preference, there is a winery tasting option for most palates and, it’s worth noting that some wineries will waive or discount tasting fees with the purchase of wines during your visit.

This is what I would consider to be a moderate budget for two people taking a 3-day weekend trip to Napa Valley. These rounded numbers are a somewhat accurate representation of what we actually spent, although we spent less in some areas (flights) and more in others (wine purchases).

Below I am going into how to stay within this budget or spend even less in certain areas. That said, even while keeping your Napa trip on a budget, I still recommend planning for at least a couple worthwhile splurges. Pre-planned splurges are definitely better than last-minute impulse buys, although the latter can definitely still happen when tipsy on good wine.

Travel Savvy Tip

Don’t look at this budget as a lump sum! That’s the quickest way to get intimidated and assume Napa Valley is unattainable. The truth is, you won’t pay the full amount at once. You’ll buy your flight and lodging right away, and then likely pay nothing for a few months.

Once it gets closer to your trip, you’ll book wine tasting and restaurant reservations. When you get back home, you’ll pay off any remaining vacay expenses you’ve incurred.

Breaking it into chunks like this is a much more approachable way to budget and afford a wine getaway like Napa Valley!

Napa Valley Budget Breakdown:

bubbly wine flight at mumm napa

$500 (price for two people)

The amount I have entered above of $500 represents what I consider to be a median flight price for travel from another US city. However, my husband and I spent less than this both times we flew into San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to visit Napa Valley:

  • In 2019, we paid $267.68 total for both of our flights. However, we’d applied a flight credit from another trip, so the real total was likely between $600-$700 from Cleveland, Ohio.
  • In 2023, we paid $22.40 total for our flights. This is because we found a great deal using credit card points .

Solo travelers should budget around $250 for airfare; everyone should read the below tips to avoid overpaying for flights:

  • Be flexible with your travel days. For example, weekend flights are typically the most expensive. Play around with searching different departure and arrival days, and you’ll be surprised what a difference that can make.
  • Travel during the low season, when there is an overall drop in prices. In Napa Valley, low season runs in the winter months between January and March. We traveled to Napa during February , which was a dream for more reasons than the low prices!
  • Last but not least, the tip that has helped me the most: Sign up for a credit card with travel rewards points. We’ve gotten countless free flights thanks to our cards, simply due to points earned on every day purchases. We’ve had great experiences using both the  Capital One Venture and the  Chase Sapphire Reserve .

Transportation

View of the Golden Gate bridge on drive from San Francisco International Airport

You’ll have to get from your house to and from the airport somehow. If you don’t have friends or family to drive you, Uber it is!

Also, while you’re in Napa Valley, chances are that sometimes you’ll want the flexibility to not drive yourself. I know when we were headed out to dinner for the evening, we wanted to be able to drink wine at our leisure and not worry about being good to drive.

These Ubers/Lyfts will add up and should be used sparingly. However, it’s always better to spend a little more than to be reckless with safety while on vacation.

rental car in napa - napa valley on a budget

$200 – Car, $75 – Gas

Renting a car in Napa Valley is fairly affordable over a few days and is cheaper than ubering everywhere. You won’t need four wheel drive or anything; a basic sedan works fine.

Most of the roads are well-paved and flat and the weather tends to be dry, unless you’re visiting in the winter. Just be smart when its comes to visiting wineries. It’s better to spend a little extra on an Uber to avoid an unsafe situation. Also, remember that you are allowed to dump excess wine while tasting, and no one will judge you for not finishing your pour.

I also think it’s wisest to start your day at the furthest winery from your hotel and work your way back for efficiency’s sake.

exterior of the candlelight inn in napa valley

During both visits to Napa Valley, Aaron and I stayed at lower cost inns. We have zero regrets, since we care way more about our experiences exploring Napa than what our hotel room looks like.

If you like cozy inns and B&B’s, the Candlelight Inn in Napa is the perfect place to stay on a budget and is just a few quick minutes from downtown Napa’s dining scene. Besides being romantic and charming for couples, this inn even includes a delicious daily breakfast. I especially loved the complementary wine available each evening in the lobby.

Sunset from the property of the Trailside Inn Bed and Breakfast - Napa Valley on a Budget

For a more rugged setting in what is basically an entire apartment, I can’t recommend enough the Trailside Inn Bed and Breakfast in Calistoga. The grounds were tucked among surrounding vineyards and boasted a pool and hot tub. The host also made us fresh banana and apple breads each morning for breakfast.

Although this inn wasn’t walking distance from town, we were within ten minutes driving distance from the Venge, Vincent Arroyo, and Schramsberg wineries!

Food & Drink

Kimchi burger from Grott's Roadside stand on wooden table

It’s essential to explore Napa’s renowned dining scene, which boasts several Michelin starred restaurants within the valley. Unfortunately, these critically acclaimed eateries don’t come cheap, which is why I budgeted $655 for this category. However, this amount also factors in having drinks with dinner, which you can totally skip.

Dining will be a difficult area to save money while in Napa Valley, since you’ll probably want to check out at least a couple atmospheric restaurants for a memorable meal. Here are three tips for keeping this part of your budget from getting out of control:

  • Book a hotel with breakfast included for at least one meal that won’t require dining out.
  • Pack a lunch and snacks to eat between wine tastings (see next category).
  • Minimize ordering of drinks with dinner.
  • Mix in some budget meals during your stay.

Taco food truck in Yountville - Napa Valley on a budget

Here are some lower cost meals my husband and I ate during our Napa Valley trips:

  • Calistoga Inn Restaurant & Brewery (Calistoga) : $73 for pizza, wings, and drinks.
  • Tacos Garcia food truck (Yountville): $22 got us flavorful, satiating burritos. I highly recommend getting the chorizo.
  • Gott’s Roadside (Napa) : We spent $42 on two juicy burgers with fries. I particularly liked the unusual flavors of the kimchi burger.
  • Bounty Hunter Wine Bar (Napa) : On our February 2019 trip, we took a break from wine sipping and spent $70 on a barbecue dinner.

We’ve had amazing splurge meals at Bottega , Ad Hoc , and Cook St. Helena .

Solo travelers should budget around $300 or less for food and drink. I know I tend to eat more simply and drink less alcohol when traveling alone.

a lemon tree in napa valley at cade estate winery

You don’t have to go crazy buying groceries in Napa. However, if you stay somewhere with at least a mini fridge, it’ll be easier to stay on budget by making sandwiches for lunch each day. I recommend buying some other snacks too, like chips, yogurt, and granola bars to eat in between wine tastings.

Wine Tastings

steel drums containing aging wine

While it’s near impossible to find a cheap wine tasting in Napa Valley, it is possible to stay within a budget (as budgets go in Napa).

I’ve curated a list of tastings that more or less fit the $800 I’ve estimated above, without sacrificing anything on the quality of wine:

  • Vincent Arroyo : $60 for two people, and you’ll try 8-10 wines!
  • Biale : $100 for two people. Some of my favorite Zinfandel is sold here.
  • Mumm Napa : $80 for two people. Take a break from red wine for some bubbly while perusing the adjacent art gallery.
  • Grgich : $150 for two people. This winery first put Napa on the map.
  • Venge Vineyards : $90 for two people. Each tasting fee is waived with purchase of a bottle.
  • Summit Lake : $150 for two people. Delicious red wines are served during an intimate tasting, with especially delicious Zinfandel. Tasting fees are credited towards wine purchases.
  • Caymus : $100 for two people. This is one of the most famous wineries in Napa.
  • Frog’s Leap : $80 for two people doing the informal Garden Bar Tasting.

Keep in mind that it is not always necessary for each person to get their own tasting. If you are willing to share one between two people, this will cut your expenses in half.

On the other hand, you may have room in your budget for a few splurge wineries. Here are two I recommend:

  • Schramsberg: A sparkling wine producer that distributes widely in the United States. The most intriguing part of the tasting is the tour of the wine caves that were originally carved in the mid-19th century. A tasting and tour costs $85 per person.
  • Cade: Drink some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley with sweeping views from Howell Mountain. Tastings are $100 per person.

Solo travelers should budget around $400 for wine tastings.

Other Activities

Girl in Muir Woods hat standing above the Pacific ocean in California

Napa Valley has more awesome sights in the vicinity beyond the vineyards. Swapping out a wine tasting or two with a couple of these awesome trails will help to save some money:

  • Muir Woods National Monument: A wonderful National Park Service site that boasts trail for all abilities and some of the best redwood trees near Napa Valley. It’s easy to add a visit here on the drive to or from SFO. This park is a bit pricey, charging $9.50 for parking and $15 per person for admission.
  • Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve: Although an hour’s drive from Napa Valley, this state park boasts equally nice redwood trees to Muir Woods for a quarter of the price. There is no admission fee; only a $10 parking fee is required.
  • The Petrified Forest: This is your chance to see 3.4 million year old trees that have been preserved in volcanic ash. A self-guided tour to explore one mile over two trails costs $12 per person.
  • Bothe-Napa Valley State Park: Explore a range of easy to moderate trails of varying lengths without leaving Napa Valley. I personally recommended the largely flat, shady 3-mile Redwood Trail. Parking costs $10.
  • Point Reyes: This National Seashore is a hike to reach from Napa Valley. However, we were willing drivers who managed to squeeze in a visit before going to the airport, as we had a late flight home. What we got in return for our efforts were absolutely stunning views of the Pacific Coast. If it’s not too windy, you might even be allowed to descend the steep stairs to the Point Reyes Lighthouse. There is no entrance fee to visit

Solo travelers should budget around $40 for activities.

Pet Boarding

Do you have a fur baby like us? While it’s ideal to have a friend or family member watch your pet for free, that isn’t always possible. When Aaron and I travel together, we always pay to board our dog in a cozy little “suite” at his vet office.

Prices for this where I live in Northeast Ohio tend to run about $50 a night, but vary wildly in quality and services included.

couple at cade estate winery in napa

I hope this budget helps you in planning a more affordable trip to Napa Valley. While this cost rundown is based on one couple, you will save even more money if you are traveling with a group and can split costs. This little bit of extra planning and consideration will go a long way in getting the most for your money in Napa.

Napa Valley Winery Tour Practical Information

napa valley vineyards in fall

What is the best time to visit Napa Valley?

The early fall is the best time to visit Napa Valley. The vineyards’ leaves will start changing to their autumn colors, and the grape harvest will be underway.

The Napa Valley will be full of energy with harvest parties, and the wineries will be full of guests in town to celebrate the start of Cabernet season.

Weather in the early fall is typically mild as the summer heat is now gone, but the winter chill is yet to set in.

This makes it a great time to explore the vineyards or sip some Chardonnay on the terrace of a winery.

💡 Read our post on the best time to visit Napa Valley with a month-by-month guide.

What is the cheapest time to go to Napa?

Winter is the cheapest time to go to Napa Valley.

With the winter chill comes lower prices and smaller crowds in the wine country.

The price of accommodations dips dramatically at this time of year, which makes staying at luxury hotels in the valley accessible.

The downside is that several wineries close for the season, and the weather is less hospitable for exploring the vineyards.

This winter season is a great time to visit if you want to score a room for a good price and enjoy the wineries and restaurants without having a difficult time getting a reservation.

Napa or Sonoma, which one is better?

napa winery

Both Napa and Sonoma wine regions have their unique charm that draws crowds to taste their world-class wines.

Napa Valley is ideal for first-timers who want to experience the legendary wineries that put California on the wine map.

There is a lot to see and taste in the valley, from Michelin starred restaurants to a gondola that takes you up the hill to a stunning winery .

Sonoma is also home to many amazing wineries and restaurants that are worthy of a trip on their own.

Sonoma is generally less expensive and much less crowded as the region is more spread out.

Napa is famous for its stunning Cabernet Sauvignon and rich Chardonnay, while Sonoma offers breathtaking Pinot Noir and crisp Chardonnay.

Napa Wine Tour FAQs

How much does a napa valley wine tour cost.

Prices range from $125 per person for larger groups to over $400 for private excursions.

Tours generally do not include the cost of wine tasting, which start at about $25 and can cost well over $100 per person for premium selections.

Some tours include lunch, while others allow you the option to choose and pay for your lunch.

How much does it cost to go to a winery in Napa?

The cost for tasting a selection of the winery’s offerings can range from $25 to $100 for vintage wines or small production bottles.

Most wineries do not charge to visit the winery, but they do charge for wine tastings. The prices vary depending on the region and the quality of the wine produced.

Most wineries will make the tasting complimentary if you buy a bottle or two to take home.

If you’re looking for a more affordable and low-key alternative, you can check out the wineries near Sacramento .

cost of wine tours in napa valley

How many wineries should you visit in a day in Napa?

Most wine experts will limit their trips to up to three wineries in a day.

Wine tasting is about experiencing and appreciating a region’s offerings and is best when the palette is fresh.

Tasting wines at too many wineries will fatigue the palette and reduce an individual’s appreciation for the wines they are tasting.

Can you visit the wineries in Napa without a reservation?

While many wineries in Napa do not require reservations, it is best to book in advance to ensure that you can get a tasting when you arrive.

Make sure to check the winery’s website in advance to check for reservation requirements, as many do not accept walk-ins.

Booking in advance also provides the opportunity to add special accouterments like cheese boards and select outdoor seating.

What should you wear when wine tasting in Napa?

Appropriate attire for wine tasting ranges from nice jeans to business casual, with most locals leaning towards more relaxed attire.

While the Napa Valley offers many luxury accommodations and restaurants, the vibe is comfortable with a slightly upscale feel.

It’s more than appropriate to dress up a little for the occasion, but it’s important to avoid wearing shoes like high heels .

This will limit your access to the wineries as many of the properties have gravel and grass areas for outdoor tastings and lunch in the vineyards.

Do you tip when wine tasting in Napa?

Although you are not obligated to tip, it is appreciated. As most tasting costs an average of $40 per person, it is appropriate to tip between $5 and $10 per person.

Most wineries will discount or waive the tasting fee if you buy a few bottles of wine. In this scenario, tipping on the full price of the tasting is the best practice.

In the event that you sign up for their wine club, the server usually receives a commission, and no tip is necessary.

Things to Know

Though private tours of Napa Valley are more common, there are still a handful of companies that offer group tours.

Of the companies listed below, Wine Country Tour Shuttle, Platypus Wine Tours, Napa Valley Wine Country Tours, and Beau Wine Tours & Limo Service visit 4 different wineries, have the capacity to accommodate small groups of 10-12 guests, and are lead by qualified guides.

A picnic lunch is also included in the price of each of these tour. Platypus Tours and Napa Valley Wine Tours also serve a cheese platter and breakfast with mimosas, respectively.

Wine tasting fees are not included in the cost of any of these tours, and usually run about $15 per person at each stop.

Gray Line and Tower Tours, on the other hand, run full coach tours to 3 different wineries. Tasting fees are included in the price of these tours, though lunch is not.

Below the companies are listed in order of price, from cheapest to most expensive.

City Sightseeing

CitySightseeing Tours are classic hop-off, hop-on bus tours that take visitors to several different tourist destinations.

The half day and combination tour options visit 2-3 wineries, while the full day tour visits 4. The first wine tasting fee is included in the price of the full and half day tours, but all additional tastings must be paid for separately.

Overall, visitors who traveled with CitySightseeing found the experience very enjoyable and straightforward.

TripAdvisor Rating: 3.5 stars.

This is one of the newest tour companies in the Bay Area, and one of their services just so happens to be a day trip to the Napa & Sonoma Valleys.

At 9 hours in length, this is an extensive outing which includes several opportunities to taste wine and learn about how it is made.

Groups are kept at a maximum of 12 persons to make sure that the tour doesn't get too crowded.

Wine Country Tour Shuttle

This company offers 2 different wine tours around Napa Valley. The first is with Robert Mondavi Winery and the second is with Castello di Amorosa.

Both include 4 stops at different vineyards, a picnic lunch, and a knowledgeable guide. Of all the group tours included on this list, this company is the most affordable at just $79 and $89 per person.

Wine tasting fees, gratuities, and the entrance fee for visiting Castello di Amorosa ($20) is not included in the price of the tour.

Reviews:  Reviews are generally very positive, as many guests comment on the impressive knowledge of the guides and the beautiful views seen on the drive.

On rare occasions, guests report having their tours canceled at the last minute, though complaints of this sort are few and far between.

Of their two tours on offer, the Napa Valley Tour with Castello di Amorosa is the most popular.

TripAdvisor Rating: 4.5 stars.

Gray Line Tours

In addition to their many other bus tours, Gray Line also offers a Deluxe Sonoma & Napa Valley Wine Tour packages.

Guests visit 3 different wineries and are given free time to explore and have lunch in Yountville. Unlike many of the other companies, the tasting fees are included in this tour.

However, the 'tour' at each vineyard is limited to a presentation by a representative and wine tasting, rather than of the wine making process itself. Also, this group tour is much larger than most, with capacity for more than 40 persons.

As Gray Line offers to collect guests directly from their hotel in San Francisco, this is a great option for those who aren't staying in Napa and don't feel comfortable traveling their on their own.

Cost:  $91 per person, including tasting fees but excluding lunch

Drop-off/Pick-up:  Pick-up/drop-off from any San Francisco hotel

Reviews:  Reviews of Gray Line's wine tour are generally very positive. Guests praise the knowledgeable drive-guide and the ease by which they were able to visit several wineries from San Francisco to Napa.

Some complain about the lack of intimacy, however, that is inevitably the trade off for such an affordable excursion that also includes wine tasting fees.

TripAdvisor Rating: 4 stars.

Tower Tours

Tower Tours offer a Napa & Sonoma Wine Country which visits 3 different wineries and offers complimentary shuttle pick up from most San Francisco hotels.

Similar to Gray Line Tours, this tour accommodates a large number of people and thus isn't quite as intimate as some of the other companies.

Wine tasting fees at each vineyard is included in the price of the tour, however, lunch is not. After a brief presentation and wine tasting, guests are given 1 hour to explore the winery and complete any purchases of their choosing.

Like Gray Line Tours, the presentation does not include any insight into how the wine is made.

Cost: $91 per person

Drop-off/Pick-up: Complimentary shuttle pickup from most San Francisco hotels.

Reviews:  Reviews of Tower Tours are relatively positive as guests praise the guides and the selection of wineries.

Some comment that they wish there was more information regarding the wine making process, however, this is more of an issue to be taken up with the wineries rather than the tour company.

Overall, guests seem very pleased with this affordable wine tour!

Extranomical Tours offers full day tours to both Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. Their trips include complimentary hotel pickup, a guided tour of San Francisco's wine country, and wine tasting fees at at least 2 different wineries.

Muir Woods and Wine Country (Sonoma and Napa Valley

  • From $102 per person
  • More info to book

Wine Lover's Tour and Alcatraz Ticket

  • From $147 per person
  • More info and for reservation

Reviews: Extranomical Tours has a great reputation, boasting 4 ½ star rating on TripAdvisor and a 4-star rating on Yelp.

The handful of negative reviews are mostly centered around scheduling conflicts, however these issues are often difficult to predict, especially considering the heavy traffic coming in and out of San Francisco.

Considering this is the only real complaint, the company is obviously doing pretty well.

Almost every other similar service has received complaints about the bus either being late or broken, so it’s worth noting that Extranomical does not appear to have these problems.

TripAdvisor Rating: 4.5 stars.

Napa Valley Wine Country Tours

This company offer 2 different types of wine tour of Napa Valley -- the first departing from San Francisco and the second departing from Napa.

Each operates daily and visits 4 premium vineyards in Napa Valley, includes a picnic style lunch, and features a knowledgable driver-guide.

The Napa wine tour that departs from San Francisco also includes a "mimosa wine country breakfast", which is served on the bus and features bagels, croissants, fresh fruit, and a mimosa.

Gratuity and wine tasting fees not included in either tour.

Platypus Wine Tours

Platypus Wine Tours is the top rated wine tour company on TripAdvisor and offers group tours of Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, and North Sonoma.

Reviews: Platypus Tours has an outstanding reputation, with a 5 star rating on TripAdvisor and several thousand reviews. Former guests comment that "there can't be a better wine tour out there" and ask "is it possible to have too much fun??".

Though complaints are few and far between, some guests felt the tour was overpriced and that the wine tasting tour should have been included in the fee. However, it is very common for all wine tours to exclude the tasting fees in the cost of the tour.

Beau Wine Tours

Though they specialize primarily in private luxury wine tours, they also offers a group tour to Napa Valley.

Guests are brought to 4 different vineyards, are accompanied by a qualified guide, and given champagne and a picnic lunch. The price of the tour does not include the wine tasting fees or any gratuity for the guide.

Drivers typically call tourists prior to the tour to inquire about their wine and vineyard preferences, so that the tour is as customized as possible (though there is no guarantee that the guide will be able to accommodate everyone's wishes).

Cost: $125 per person, not including wine tasting fees.

Pick-up/Drop-off: Tours will pick up from almost any hotel or inn in Napa Valley. For those taking Napa Valley tour from San Francisco, the tour dispatches a bus to collect tourists a Vallejo Ferry Terminal.

Guests simply must go to San Francisco Ferry Marketplace Building, take the ferry to Vallejo Ferry Terminal, and then wait to be collected by the tour bus.

Reviews:  Beau Wine Tours also receive excellent reviews, with many tourists praising the company's outstanding customer service.

Though their group tour is not as popular as their individual tours, there are still several positive reviews from guests who have used their group tour service.

Though individual tours may appear significantly more expensive than any of the group tour offers, they can be a reasonable alternative for those already travelling as a group.

There are several different companies that offer individual tours of Napa Valley. Occasionally there are 'hidden fees' in the form of tax, wine tasting fees, the cost of the fuel, and any other number of things, so be sure to clarify what is included in the cost of the tour.

TripAdvisor Rating: 5 stars.

In addition to their group tours, they offers several different customizable individual tours of Napa Valley.

Reviews:  Napa Your Way receives excellent reviews, with many guests praising Brad, the owner and main guide of the company, for being so knowledgable and for having the ability to "make small miracles happen."

This company truly specializes in making each tour as unique and personal as possible, and all of their 5 star reviews are evidence of that success!

  • Confirm what exactly is included in the cost and what is not. For example, the price of group tours often does not include tasting fees, and the price of individual tours often does not include the cost of gas. It is important to know the approximate cost of the day so that guests can plan accordingly.
  • Don't forget ID! The last thing you want is to pay for a wine tour and then not be able to drink the wine!
  • Do your research beforehand. Though some group tours have a set list of wineries that they visit, some group tours and all individual tours will try to accommodate any requests made by the guests. If there is a particular winery you want to visit, read up on it beforehand and ask your guide if it could be done.

cost of wine tours in napa valley

Looking for a quick break from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco? If your answer is positive, the Napa and Sonoma Wine Country Tour might be what you are looking for.

The tour begins at the Gray Line Visitor Center in San Francisco. If you are staying at a hotel, feel free to contact the tour operator to pick you up your hotel.

From there, a well-equipped motor coach (complimentary Wi-Fi included) takes you over the Golden Gate Bridge. Approaching Sonoma Valley, you can expect the tour guide to recount exciting tales of Gold Rush fortunes and Spanish missionaries.

Wineries You Will Visit On This Napa Valley Vacation Package

Nicholson Ranch Winery is the first stop. The family-run estate offers some of the best pinot noirs, chardonnays, and merlots in the southern part of Sonoma. From the estate’s patio, visitors can enjoy a picture perfect view of the sloping vineyards. After Nicholson Ranch, you go straight to the heart of wine country.

The tour of Napa Valley vineyards starts with the Madonna Estate in Carneros. This winery is family-owned like the majority of them, except this one also focuses on organic wine production. All the wine tasting, sights, and sounds are likely to make you peckish, just in time for the travel to Sonoma Square for lunch.

If you don’t know it by now, you’ll find out that Sonoma Square is known for the restaurants within and around it. Lunch is not included in the tour, but many would consider this to be a good thing – who wants to eat the same set lunch at the same restaurant with everyone else in the tour.

After that, the tour makes its final stop of the day at Sutter Home , one of the largest independent American wineries. If you had ever browsed in the California aisle of any wine store, you’d have heard of Sutter Home. What’s in store is an afternoon of wine tasting and getting to know the proud history of Sutter, though unlike the former, the latter is completely optional.

The tour ends where it started in San Francisco. We are sure when you are dropped off in Union Square you will consider this one of the best Napa Valley vacation packages you've ever experienced.

Total Wine Experience

best napa vacation packages

There is no need to break the bank to spend a couple of days in Napa Valley. Case in point is the Total Wine Experience package.

Some of the highlights include leisurely wine tasting at 7 to 10 wineries and accommodation for one night with complimentary continental breakfast. You’ll also get to visit the Marin Headlands and the Muir Woods National Monuments. Plus, it’s not like you have to cram with other guests, as the tour is capped at only 14 people.

On the first day, you head north from San Francisco to the Muir Woods National Monument, where the monument isn’t anything manmade but the entire forest of old-growth redwoods. The tour continues on to a number of wineries in Sonoma Valley. After a busy day of sipping wine, you’ll be dropped at your accommodation near Sonoma Square.

How to spend the evening is completely up to you. There are plenty of restaurants in the area and even more wine-tasting rooms.

On the second day, the wine-tasting adventure continues with a ride to Glen Ellen for the first stop at Benziger Family Winery.

While there, first up is an educational tram tour of the winery, vineyards, and wine caves. This is followed by a wine-tasting session at Benziger’s private room, to be rounded off with an organic lunch. After that, there are a few more stops in Sonoma and Napa Valley before heading back to San Francisco.

Total Wine Experience is an excellent option for those who prefer a more laid-back wine country experience. In addition, the itinerary allows you to explore the area around Sonoma Square on your own.

3-Day Tour to Muir Woods, Napa Valley, and Sonoma County

cost of wine tours in napa valley

This is one of the most comprehensive tours of the major US wine-making regions. It includes a visit to landmark wineries, a walk in the Muir Woods National Monument, and quite the gastronomic experience. Those elements combine to make this one of the best Napa Valley vacation packages.

From San Francisco, the first stop on the first day is at Muir Woods. That’s for a chance to walk beneath some of the tallest trees in the world. From there on, your next stop is Cheese Country. En route, you can bet your last nickel that the driver or tour guide would point out the oak-covered slopes and pastures of Martin County hillsides.

The local producers’ award-winning cheeses are bound to get your taste buds going and ready for the town of Petaluma, where exceptional wine-tasting rooms and cafes that serve local and international cuisines await. In the afternoon, you’ll hit in no particular order B.R. Cohn Winery, Kunde Family Winery, Ravenswood Winery, and more.

On the second day, the tour makes its first stop at Domaine Chandon, known for its sparkling wines and champagnes. The second and middle day is filled. You’ll visit the town of Yountville, where you’re to grab a traditional lunch at Oakville Grocery and make a stop at the Culinary Institute of America. The afternoon is reserved for tasting at some of the best wineries in the area.

The final day begins with a stroll at Jack London’s Beauty Ranch (Jack London State Park) . While there, if you are down for some biodynamic wines, you can choose to visit Benziger Family Winery off London Ranch Road, though the admission fee is not included in the tour.

Finally, it’s off to Cornerstone Sonoma for lunch, where you can also appreciate the works of local artists and taste some of the locally-produced spirits.

What is The Cost of a Wine Tour in Napa Valley

  • What is The Cost of a Wine Tour in Na...

Tapas Tours

Published: 04 Dec 2023

Napa Valley stands as the pinnacle of wine regions in North America, it's famous worldwide for not only high-quality wine but also its vineyard tours and well-established tasting sessions. Its exceptional wines and delectable cuisine, set within a breathtaking landscape converge to create an unparalleled destination that beckons visitors from across the globe.

As revealed in the October 2023 Direct to Consumer Wine Report, the average cost per bottle at Napa Valley wineries has soared past the $100 threshold, accompanied by a substantial 35 per cent surge in winery tasting fees.

As a result of the pandemic, wineries were compelled to transition to a reservation-only system. Remarkably, numerous establishments have opted to maintain this exclusive appointment-based format, which has proven to be a prudent and efficient approach.

How Much is a Wine Tour in Napa Valley?

As formal tastings become increasingly popular, the average fee for wine tastings, especially in Napa Valley, has experienced a significant surge. In 2023, the price of a basic Napa Valley tasting soared to $81, surpassing the average cost of $38 in Sonoma County and $28 in Paso Robles.

For the more exclusive wine tastings in Napa, the average fee has climbed to $128 per person, surpassing Sonoma County's $72 and Paso Robles' $48. In addition to the higher charges, tasting rooms are increasingly reliant on gratuities from their guests.

Despite rising prices, customers continue to flock to and indulge in America's famous wine region. Hugh Davies, owner of Schramsberg Vineyards in Calistoga, confirms the unprecedented surge in demand, as people have an insatiable appetite for wine.

At tabl.com, our Napa Valley wine tours offer various experiences and are sensibly priced from between $125 to $200 per person. Costs depend on factors like season, duration, winery count, transportation, and food inclusions. Rest assured, we have a wide selection of tours to suit your preferences and create unforgettable memories.

At the wineries, you can sample 4 to 5 wines and immerse yourself in the captivating history of the vineyard and winemaking process. While harvest is the busiest season for the people who make wine in Napa Valley, or any wine region for that matter, summer is the region’s tourism fully comes to life. Route 29 and Silverado Trail, the parallel roads that run up and down the valley, will be backed up in both directions with wine lovers, while tasting rooms, restaurants, and hotels will be bursting at the seams as oenophiles flock to America’s favorite wine region. We have our go-to spots and activities, like sharing a private cabana with friends at Louis M. Martini for a food and wine tasting, enjoying a glass of Quintessa while taking in the winery’s panoramic views, or savoring a mezze plate alongside a flight of wine at Darioush , but we’re always on the lookout for something new. With more than 400 wineries and tasting rooms to choose from, planning a visit to Napa Valley can seem overwhelming, but if you have to be the first one to experience the latest thing, you don’t want to miss out on these new additions to the Napa scene.

Maison Fayard

French born winemaker Julien Fayard has just made it easier than ever for wine lovers who like his style to find bottles that have felt his touch. Maison Fayard in downtown Napa is the first of its kind wine shop, featuring Fayard’s own labels Les Vins Julien, Julian Fayard Wines, and Covert Estate, plus juice from two dozen boutique wineries that he works with in Napa and Sonoma and beyond. No other renowned winery consultant has yet to launch a dedicated bottle shop and tasting room. Fayard is also making grape-based brandy in response to climate change and is focusing on small lot, artisanal Napa Valley spirits. Maison Fayard hosts private tastings by appointment and features several lines of fine glassware.

If you’ve already been there and done that with the wine train and hot air ballooning, the next step is gathering your gang for a custom three-hour cruise up and down the Napa River. The 55-foot power catamaran Kiwi Kat is one of a kind, designed to navigate the river’s shallows while you and a party of up to twelve enjoy pours from small, family-owned wineries alongside appetizers and small bites made with local ingredients. With fully customizable options, you can bring in a chef for a food and wine extravaganza or go all out and hire a justice of the peace for a wedding on the water. You will truly be in the lap of luxury as you cruise past rolling vineyards and majestic mountains. No matter how many times you have been to Napa, you’ve never seen it like this.

JCB St. Helena

cost of wine tours in napa valley

At the pre-opening party of this latest addition to Jean-Charles Boisset’s collection of tasting rooms and wineries, one of us said that it looks like a cross between a high-class bordello and the Sistine Chapel. We mean this in the best possible way. On Main Street in St. Helena, this is the perfect spot to savor wine from the Boisset family’s properties in Napa, Sonoma, Burgundy, Champagne, and Chablis among Baccarat chandeliers, red velvet and tiger-striped upholstery, and a combination of original art and repurposed works from museums around the world. The extensive menu of wines by the glass, flight, or bottle is only available at this location and one unique option is a comparative tasting of wines from California and Burgundy. Decadent food pairings, including cheese, charcuterie, and exclusive JCB caviar perfectly complement the diverse portfolio of wines.

Outdoor Estate Tasting at Baldacci Family Vineyards

cost of wine tours in napa valley

As we roll into summer, Baldacci Family Vineyards has opened up the terrace for its brand-new Outdoor Estate Tasting . Hosted on the open-air Estate House Terrace, this experience begins with a welcome splash of Pops sparkling, a delicious blanc de noirs from Carneros, followed by a taste of three limited-production, single-vineyard, estate-grown wines, including two new Cabernet Sauvignons, paired with seasonal small bites. Guests may choose either Chardonnay or Pinot Noir and then enjoy Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon and Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon. Set among Baldacci’s organically farmed vineyards, this tasting allows you to relax and take in the natural surroundings in the heart of Stags Leap District on Silverado Trail.

White Wine and Caviar Experience at Silverado Vineyards

wine and caviar tasting

Tasting in Napa Valley can seem like an all red wine, all the time marathon for those who prefer a lighter shade in their glass. White wine connoisseurs are in luck with Silverado Vineyards’s newly launched White Wine and Caviar Experience. Available in the morning or afternoon, it features a hosted white wine and caviar tasting offering Silverado’s portfolio of white wines paired with caviar, house-made potato chips, and crème fraîche. Guests will learn about Silverado’s history and winemaking styles while tasting four white wines and a special pour of the newest vintage of the Stags Leap SOLO Cabernet Sauvignon. This is just one of the new tasting options at Silverado, which has been completely updated since its acquisition by Foley Family Wines two years ago.

Mick and Ron were simply awesome. The are extremely professional and most important personable. They arrived on time and were very flexible. We each had our own side car and the ride was smooth and so enjoyable. I have been riding since I was 5 years old. I have never been the passenger on. MC. This was a treat to just sit back literally and enjoy. I felt totally safe on the German Iron horse. You can arrange your own itinerary or let Mick make the arrangements. Wine tasting, scenic tour among the vines picnic the possibilities are endless. Safety is a priority to Mick and Ron. You can tell they love what they do and it translates to a great adventure. Well done Mick and Ron I will see you again soon. Call Mick and schedule your side car tour you will not be Disappointed.

I had the opportunity to play tourist in my own backyard yesterday. We live in Sonoma County, but decided to do something out of the ordinary and take a tour through Sonoma with some friends via the Sidecar Tours, Inc. Our tour started outside of Sonoma at the Viansa winery. We met Mario and his other two drivers, Dave and Kelly. Mario gave us a thorough briefing of the days events, along with some safety tips and explanation of these beautiful sidecars. To be honest, a couple people in our group were a bit apprehensive about riding in the sidecars. These worries were quickly extinguished, upon seeing them close up. They're large, big enough to fit two people with ample room. A friend of ours is 6'5" and he fit comfortably with his wife. Helmets and goggles were provided as well. The ride was surprisingly smooth. Besides the scenic tour, we stopped at two wineries. The tasting fee and scheduling were included in the price. We started out our tasting at a wonderful winery, Homewood. I would never have discovered this fabulous winery if it weren't for Sidecar Tours. We were in awe at the presentation and taste of the wines offered, but that's another Yelp review. After our tasting, we took a scenic drive to the city of Sonoma, where we stopped at the picturesque city hall for some photos and learned a bit more about our guides. After this stop, we then drove to our final stop, again at Viansa. Viansa is a gorgeous setting, sitting atop a hill overlooking the plains outside Sonoma. Again, more tasting and a charcuterie board was included. Throughout our tour, we kept saying how amazing this tour was and how we want to book again. Mario, Kelly and Dave were awesome guides. They were very personable and there to help. There is also an extra package where you can get a GoPro video of your day. I received my video the next day. FYI, there is enough room in the basket, in back of the sidecars, to fit plenty of wine that you'll purchase during your stops. Finally, as this tour says Napa Valley, as we did...you can also travel through Sonoma. Don't hesitate to book this tour. It's a unique experience that'll bring lasting memories.

Had one of the funnest experiences going on Temecula Sidecar beer tours with our large group of 21. The drivers are incredibly safe, outgoing and definitely entertaining! They drove us throughout the Temecula area and we stopped at three beer breweries. Nothing better than spending the day outdoors riding on a bike and drinking beer. This is a wonderful experience for large groups or individuals. Perfect for bachelor and bachelorette parties too. If you are in need of a bilingual driver ask for Angel. He is great! Overall a great time. Will absolutely do it again.

Living in SF means that frequent trips to Napa are the norm. That being said, I thought I was privvy to all the different types of tours in the valley being offered...but I somehow missed Sidecar Tours! It's exactly as it sounds. Our urban tour of Napa consisted of 2 winery visits and 1 distillery, all from the comfort of...you guessed it. A sidecar of a motorcycle. If you're a Napa newbie, allow JD or Isaac to take the wheel and chauffeur you around the city. You'll cruise to different vineyards and ride through Napa proper back to the distillery you started at. If you're a Napa native/connoisseur, allow JD or Isaac to take the wheel offer the experience of riding in a side car while picking up your next wine shipment. It's exhilarating and you get to enjoy the views from a different perspective. My only complaint is that we couldn't spend all day with the crew! If you can plan it, definitely time your tour to end around sunset. Riding off into the Napa sunset on a sidecar is an experience I'm going to remember for a long time.

Ron was fabulous! He always made sure things were going smoothly. It was a little chilly that morning, so he had a blanket for us which I highly appreciated. (It warmed up quickly after that first ride.) He was always very kind! We had such a wonderful time. We would def do it again.

YOU MUST EXPERIENCE THIS ADVENTURE!!! Where do I begin? First and foremost Mick was the most wonderful, attentive, adventurous, caring tour guides I've ever encountered. He was so personable, down to earth and knew his Napa. At first I was a bit nervous to ride the sidecars since I've never done anything like it. As soon as I heard him introduce himself, I knew we were in good hands. Sidecars are relatively new to Napa, so I was extremely happy that we found it. I'm doing sidecars every time we visit. It's the absolute best! I won't reveal all of the gems, I'll just post pictures. Love it! Thank you Mick!!! For everything!!!!

A better option would be to fly to Sacramento or Santa Barbara . Sacramento has 200 wineries in and surrounding the city. You can walk to some, take a short ride to others or take a winery tour.

https://www.visitsacramento.com/restaurants-and-drinks/wineries/

Santa Barbara has dozens of tasting rooms concentrated in downtown (within walking distance or a short walk from your hotel) as well as others in the surrounding areas;

https://santabarbaraca.com/plan-your-trip/wine/wine-tours/

And, unlike Napa, most of these wineries do not charge for 'tasting'.

Both cities have lots and lots of dining you can walk to from your hotel.

We need the context of knowing what wineries you plan to visit and where you are staying in order to tell you whether Uber/Lyft might be viable. Generally, it's not ideal, but it may be possible if you're sticking to the valley floor.

Private driver services average ~$100/hr with a 6-hour minimum. Split amongst four people, the value is there as far as having your own dedicated driver, not having to worry if an Uber/Lyft will be available when you need it, having a secure place to store your belongings, wine purchases, etc.

There are only two ways to avoid that kind of expense when touring rural parts of California: rent a car , or take an escorted bus tour, where you’ve got 20 or more people plus a driver and tour guide on a big charter bus for a week or longer. But then you’re stuck with the tour company’s prebooked itinerary, where they made it work financially because they’re bargaining with hotels and other destinations to bring them large bulk numbers of customers, rather than those destinations having to frantically advertise to bring people in one or two at a time.

The four options are:

(1) Drive yourself, but someone in your party will need to sacrifice themselves to be the DD for the day; you don't want to get a DUI in California (!), minimum $10K

(2) Private tour guide providing a luxury SUV - about $100/hour

(3) Do a "join in" group tour - check out Platypus Tours, among others

(4) Designated driver service - about $50/hour - you provide the car and gas

Since you didn't plan for your own transportation, you're limited to #1, #2. or #3.

I don't know much you plan to drink but tastings are small. Eat food as normal, drink water as you go, consider splitting a tasting and spit out samples you don't love and one of you should be able to drive (maybe take turns). It's not a frat party.

Welcome to VERANDA's Perfect Weekend , where we show you how to make the most of 48 hours in one of our favorite destinations. This month, we’re Napa-bound to relax and unwind in one of the world’s premier wine-growing regions. Renowned for its vine-covered rolling hills and the exquisite wine that’s a result of the labored landscape, Napa is the ultimate U.S. destination for wine lovers—but make no mistake, the valley has so much more to offer than delicious bottles of vino.

From a shocking number of Michelin-rated and -starred restaurants and beautiful architecture in the form of tasting rooms to lavish spas nestled among the valley’s verdant landscape and a recently re-developed downtown that cost a whopping $30 million to bring to life, Napa has it all. But be warned: With so much to do in the valley, a quick weekend trip may feel like a tease. Nevertheless, keep reading to learn how to have the perfect weekend in Napa. By the end of it, we have a sneaking suspicion that you’ll be eager to book your next visit.

<p>To make the absolute most of your weekend in Napa, we suggest getting an early start. To kick things off, check into <a href="https://aubergeresorts.com/aubergedusoleil/">Auberge Du Soleil</a>—considered to be Napa’s most luxurious resort—a Provence-inspired chateau outfitted with private maisons. </p><p>Once settled, lean into the allure of wine country with your first tasting. While some tasting rooms and wineries take walk-ins, it’s best to make reservations or set up appointments prior to arrival. Take <a href="https://www.dakotashywine.com/">Dakota Shy Winery</a>—a beautiful estate just down the road from Auberge Du Soleil—for example. The ivy-covered boutique winery—which is founded upon the ethos of hard work, commitment, and determination—welcomes visitors by appointment only. The beauty of this is that your first sips in Napa will be not only more personal, but also more educational as you’ll be able to converse freely with the winemakers about the entire process. </p><p>Another thing you may want to think about before setting foot in Napa? How you plan to get around. While Uber and Lyft are available, cars can take a while to show up and can be more difficult to find after 8 p.m. Because of this, we (along with many people we talked to) suggest booking a private driver for your time in Napa (<a href="https://nvtt.net/">Napa Valley Tours</a> is one of the top picks among both locals and tourists.). While undoubtedly expensive, the ease of getting from point A to point B and the assurance of not missing a reservation make it well worth the investment. </p>
