Rakotzbrucke Devil’s Bridge

Drive 165 km in approximately 2 hours.

One of the best day trips from Berlin for photography fans is Rakotzbrucke, known to locals as the Devil’s Bridge. The awe-inspiring 19th-century bridge uses its reflection to create a perfect circle.

Commissioned in 1860 by a knight in nearby Kromlau, the thin arch stretches across the calm waters of the Rakotzsee. The ancient bridge is known as a “devil’s bridge,” due folklore and fables that said such bridges were so dangerous that they must have been built by Satan. 

Today, the bridge can still be viewed in Kromlauer Park, but crossing the crumbling relic is prohibited in order to preserve it for generations to come.

The best time to visit Rakotzbrucke “Devil’s Bridge” is in the Autumn when the cavalcade of Fall colours offer a surreal view.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp

Drive 35 kms in approximately 45 mins.

World War II history buffs consider a visit to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp to be one of the best day trips from Berlin.

Located a short 45 minute drive from downtown Berlin, Sachsenhausen was a Nazi concentration camp in Oranienburg. It was used primarily for political prisoners from 1936 to the end of the Third Reich in May 1945. 

The administrative centre for all of Hitler’s concentration camps was located in Oranienburg, so Sachsenhausen became a training centre for SS officers who would often be sent to oversee other camps.

Today, the grounds with the remaining buildings are open to the public as a somber memorial museum. After German reunification, Sachsenhausen was overseen by a foundation that opened a museum on the site.

The World War II Holocaust museum at Sachsenhausen features artwork created by inmates, scale models of the camp, pictures, documents and other artifacts illustrating life here during Hitler’s brutal reign.

Saxon Switzerland National Park

Drive 255 kms in approximately 3 hours.

Saxon Switzerland National Park is one of the best day trips from Berlin for outdoor adventure enthusiasts. It’s one of 16 National Parks in Germany, adjoining Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic.

Located in Saxony, in the eastern part of Germany, Saxon Switzerland National Park is located just 30 kms from Dresden. It’s part of a natural area that sprawls across 710 kilometres squared.

The most enjoyable way to get to the national park from Dresden is on a cruise boat, which gives you the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the surrounding nature en route. ‘

Book a Bohemian Saxon Switzerland Day Trip From Dresden

Saxon Switzerland National Park is defined by a rocky canyon landscape. Its highest peak is 556 meters above sea level, but is located near the valley of the Elbe River. Germany’s famous nature park features 400 kms of hiking paths, 50 kms of biking paths and 755 climbing locations.

The most popular attraction at Saxon Switzerland National Park is Bastei Bridge. The famous landmark appears to be built directly into the craggy rocks. Visitors can stroll along the bridge and enjoy jaw-dropping panoramic views.

Wannsee is technically Berlin’s southernmost suburb, located just north of Potsdam. It’s named after beautiful Wansee Lake, which is actually a bulge in the Havel River.

During the warmer months of the year Wannsee is one of the most popular day trips from Berlin. Visitors can cruise across the lake, hike in the forest, explore a magical island, tour a Prussian palace and enjoy tanning on the beach at Strandbad Wannsee.

One of Wannsee’s most popular landmarks is Pfaueninsel, or Peacock Island. The island is located within a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a protected natural area for wild birds. It was in 1793, when Prussian king Frederick William II, acquired the island and had Pfaueninsel Castle built for himself and his mistress Wilhelmine Enke. Today, Peacock Island famously features free-ranging peacocks, and other native and exotic birds. It can only be reached via a small, scenic ferry ride.

The postcard-worthy Driessen Beach Park is a little hard to find, and for most Hilton Head Island regulars, that's a very good thing. Seldom crowded, with plenty of parking spaces to go around, this relatively expansive park has plenty of room to roam, and plenty of beachside and wooded amenities to keep everyone in the family perfectly comfortable and completely entertained.

A perfect stretch of sand for Hilton Head Island day trippers, or folks who just want to check out a reasonably isolated stretch of the oceanfront shoreline, Driessen Beach Park is a gem that's just popular enough with the regular sandals and lotion crowd.

The park is located at the end of Bradley Beach Road, an unimposing side road that connects to the William Hilton Parkway. The park is located on the northern half of the island, bordering several condo and resort complexes, but nonetheless remains fairly unpopulated even during the height of summer. This is due mainly to the fact that, unless a visitor knows where the park is located, the site is relatively hard to find, and the Bradley Beach Road and the park itself are both tucked away in a shaded, and heavily wooded region.

Once at the park, visitors will find ample parking spaces with "honor system" parking meters. The rate to park at Driessen Beach is nominal, at $.50 per hour, which means that a carful of visitors can easily enjoy a full day that the beach for well under five bucks.

Adjacent to the shaded parking area, visitors will find a small playground with swings and slides, picnic areas with tables, grills and picnic shelters, and walking paths through the vast wooded area which is covered with tall cedars, live oaks and pines. The park also features ample restrooms, drinking water, outdoor showers, and seasonal beach rentals for folks who forgot to bring their beach gear along for the ride. All facilities are available on a first come, first serve basis, and rental gear is generally available during the summer for an hourly or daily fee.

At first glance, the park resembles a mainland retreat, with lots of thick woods and no ocean in sight, but visitors can easily head to the shoreline via the very long wooden boardwalk that connects the maritime forest with the shoreline. Extending a good 1/8 mile or so, the boardwalk crosses over pretty uninhabited marshes before connecting, eventually, with the beach.

The beach earns this park rave reviews, as the shoreline is exceptionally wide and can accommodate plenty of beach towels, chairs and umbrellas. The ocean floor itself is generally flat, with mostly small, easily manageable waves, which makes it a perfect playground for wading, body boarding, and just splashing around. (Please note that these conditions can change on exceptionally windy days or during stormy conditions.) The sand is almost a stark white, with a few patches of seaweed or seashells depending on the day. The beach is also lifeguarded during the summer season, generally classified as Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The park is open daily from 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the summer months, and daily from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the winter months, with hours of operation changing according to Daylight Savings Time. Parking is always available on a first come, first serve basis, although there is usually enough parking spaces to go around. On big holiday weekends, like Labor Day weekend or 4th of July, visitors should plan on arriving early to secure a spot, just in case.

Driessen Beach Park is considered a hidden treasure for many long-time Hilton Head fans, and it's easy to see why. With ample amenities, cheap parking, and a slightly secretive designation as a stellar public beach, the park is a great fit for day trippers, coastal explorers, and anyone on the hunt for the island's best stretches of shoreline.
