I feel that we all experience poor…

I feel that we all experience poor service as the daily norm. Delighted to say, that One Traveller bucks that trend. From the advisors on the phone, the wonderful Tour Managers, local guides and everyone connected with One traveller the service is marvellous. The whole team are polite, friendly and helpfuI. I feel that I am in safe hands. However, I am disappointed that the trip to the West Coast of the USA has been discontinued, it looked and amazing trip, please reinstate it.

Great first holiday with One Traveller

The Lake Bled & Slovenia highlights tour was a great holiday. Lake Bled is better than the photos & Slovenia is a beautiful country. I had the lakeside view & highly recommend. The organisation of One Traveller is exceptional with everything clearly explained. As a group tour holiday sometimes I felt the amount of time in some places was not enough or too much but overall the balance of visits was good.

Date of experience : 17 July 2024

Thank you for your lovely 5-star review! We're delighted to hear you enjoyed our Lake Bled & Slovenia tour. It’s great that Lake Bled exceeded your expectations and the lakeside view was a highlight. We look forward to welcoming you back on another solo adventure soon! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

Best singles holiday companyFantastic all inclusive holidays with…

Fantastic all inclusive holidays with inventive itineraries in wonderful places with amazing scenery. Friendly, caring & knowledgeable tour managers. Have never had a bad experience, which is why I keep coming back (15 & counting) I’ve done long haul, short haul and UK. Can’t praise them highly enough 😊

Extortionate prices

Company claim no supplement for single travellers, have you seen the cost of their holidays?Absolutely ridiculous.May as well travel with a company that does charge a supplement as it will still cost a hell of a lot less!

Date of experience : 10 September 2024

Thank you for your feedback. We understand that the cost of holidays is an important consideration for all travellers . While our prices may seem higher, they reflect the high-quality, fully escorted tours and experiences we provide. The "no supplement for single travellers" policy is designed to offer value to those travelling alone, who often face extra charges elsewhere. We are committed to ensuring that every guest enjoys a hassle-free, enriching travel experience without hidden fees. Kind Regards The One Traveller Team

Verona opera

The holiday was well organised, but I think a group of 28 was too large, especially, walking in a group to get to a pickup point, bearing in mind different levels of mobility. One person got lost in the crowds in Verona after the opera trying to keep up with the group walking towards the pickup point. Other than that the holiday was an enjoyable experience.

Date of experience : 16 August 2024

Thank you for your review and for 4-stars! We're delighted to hear that you had an overall enjoyable experience and that you found the tour to be well organised. We hope to welcome you back on another solo adventure soon! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

Great time in Stockholm

Really enjoyed my holiday in Stockholm! This was the second time I’d been on this holiday. Great itinerary, hotel, food, location and tour manager.

Thank you for your lovely review and for 5-stars! It's wonderful to hear that your second time in Stockholm was just as magical as the first. We're also delighted to hear that you found the itinerary, hotel, food and tour manager to be great and that this enhanced your experience with us. We hope to welcome you back on another solo adventure soon. With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

The Baltic States holiday, August 2024

In dealing with the company by telephone, I find the staff most courteous, friendly and helpful. I have never felt dissatisfied in these dealings. The holiday itself was extremely enjoyable. The itinerary had been thoughtfully put together, to include a wide variety of activities and experiences. The tour manager was very friendly, helpful and efficient. The locations and the hotels were excellent. I would highly recommend this holiday.

Date of experience : 06 August 2024

Thank you so much for your wonderful five star review. We are so pleased to hear that you had an amazing time; it truly sounds like you had a fantastic holiday and got to experience all that the Baltic State's tour has to offer. We hope to see you again soon for another travel adventure. Kindest regards, The One Traveller Team

A thoroughly enjoyable holiday

A thoroughly enjoyable holiday. It was well organised with interesting trips and our hotel was excellent. Our Tour Manager, Jana, was very special; organising us with minimum fuss and always entertaining. I can’t praise her enough.

Thank you for your kind words and for five stars! We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your time with Jana, and have shared your lovely words onto her. We hope that we get the opportunity to take you on many more solo adventures. Kindest regards, The One Traveller Team

Wonderful holiday for first time…

Wonderful holiday for first time traveller with your company. Superb tour guide - couldn't have asked for better. Patient, well informed, easy going, smart and good company. Lovely hotel, perfect itinerary and met lots of like-minded people, so lots of chat and friendship. Would highly recommend.

I hope you will allow us to take you away again soon on another solo travelling adventure. Kind regards, The One Traveller team

Lake Bled and Slovenia's Attractions

Overall, this holiday was very good. The hotel was clean and well appointed with spacious areas including the bedrooms. Meals were buffet style with a good selection and One Traveller guests had an area to themselves with tables overlooking the lake. The holiday was not exactly restful with excursions every day, apart from last day, starting between 8 and 9 am but the coach was very comfortable and the driver's skills excellent taking us to a variety of Slovenia's attractions. Charles the Tour Manager was very caring and patient and remarkably, remembered everyones name by Day 2!

Thank you for your review and for 5-stars! We're pleased you enjoyed the spacious hotel and lake views. We're delighted to read your kind words on our tour manager. Our tour managers all work extremely hard to ensure all guests have a memorable experience so its great to receive such lovely comments. We hope to welcome you on another trip soon! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team

Six day Prague visit for newcomers.

Nice hotel in centre of Prague. We visited many paces including the fantastic Strahov library. The architecture in Prague is amazing. There were local guides who were full of information. We ate out in restaurants as well as the hotel which was great as we could try the national food. We had a go at making a silver coin and watched a glass decorating demo. Enjoyed my six days very much.

Date of experience : 16 June 2024

Thank you for sharing your experience with us and for the amazing 5-star review! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the wonderful city of Prague and all it has to offer We look forward to welcoming you back again on another memory making adventure! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

Wildlife Cruise

The organisation on board was exceptional and thanks to our Tour Manager Lisa Chadwick who went that extra mile. Food was great as was the service. I have no criticisms at all. Didn't see much wildlife but nothing can be done about that. My only criticism would be the excursion on to Stornoway/Lewis which had very little of interest

Date of experience : 22 July 2024

Thank you for leaving us such a lovely five star review. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time away with us! We hope that we get the opportunity to take you on another solo adventure soon. Kindest regards, The One Traveller team

Baltic States

First time with One Traveller but it won't be my last. Great itinerary and fantastic tour manager in Serena. Good hotels and, with one exception, great and varied meals. Would certainly recommend this trip.

One traveller courier lied to me about the inaccessibility of the beauties of Venice

Once again I have to write after receiving a long letter apologising for my poor vegetarian food and lack of concern But no financial reimbursement Sadly the courier lied to me about the situation in Venice that there were too many steps and impossible for me to walk I gave since visited Venice myself independently and found that it has been completely transformed with disabled ramps that make even the most poorly traveller an opportunity to visit that beautiful city All I had was rather pathetic apologies but no remuneration and huge disappointment at not visiting that fabulous city I’m So delighted that it was easily accessible and I managed myself

Date of experience : 25 May 2024

We understand you have already spoken to our customer service department but if you would like to discuss the matter further, please get in touch (01760 722 011) or email customer [email protected]. We will be happy to talk through the situation with you again. Kindest Regards The One Traveller Team.

Lovely holiday based in Opatija

A very enjoyable holiday, one of the best short haul holidays I have had. Opatija was a great base, and the itinerary was well judged in terms of pace. The hotel was very good overall, there were a couple of rough edges but easily forgiven because of the superb location in the heart of Opatija right by the seafront. The local guides were OK but the Tour Manager was truly excellent.

Date of experience : 18 June 2024

Thank you for your wonderful 5-star review! We're delighted to hear that you had such an enjoyable holiday with us in Opatija. Its great to hear that the hotel and itinerary met your expectations, and we appreciate your kind words about our Tour Manager. We look forward to welcoming you on another trip soon! With best wishes, Your One Traveller team.

Very well organised company-everything well taken care of from start to finish resulting in a stress free holiday Good hotels with great staff ,supportive tour manager on site Interesting varied excursions,a free day so one can choose to do as much or little to relax and enjoy. On the whole ,very good food especially in the hotels we stay at Some music entertainment thrown in so always very enjoyable---Thank you Ruth T--Windsor

Thank you for leaving us such a lovely five-star review following your holiday to Opatija. We are so pleased to hear that you had such an amazing time and have hopefully created some new, fantastic, memories! We hope that we get the opportunity to host your next solo adventure Kind regards, The One Traveller team

A wonderful inclusive holiday

A wonderful inclusive holiday. Our excellent Tour Manager was with us all the time; local guides at most locations were also superb. We saw so much and learnt about the history of the area and each place we visited. Good accommodation, the lovely company of fellow travellers and some delicious food and drink, what’s not to love? The only downside was the heatwave in mid-late June. Taking the tour in May would have been better temperatures.

Thank you for leaving us such a lovely five star review following your recent One Traveller holiday. We are so pleased to hear you have had yet another wonderful holiday with One Traveller. It sounds like you had a fantastic holiday and you experienced all that Puglia has to offer. We can't wait for you to travel with us again in the future! Kind regards, The One Traveller Team

Why a travel advisor is the secret to a perfect – and unique – holiday

Sponsor logo of Travel Associates

It’s one of those classic life ironies: if you want to have a holiday that’s equal parts relaxing and unforgettable, you have to be prepared to work for it. Hard. There’s the timing, the planning, the flights, the accommodation, the compromising. Where will we eat? What part of town should stay in? Do we want to take the morning train or the afternoon one?

The pre-holiday saga is exhausting enough to make you feel like you need another holiday. And it’s a fraught process, which is easier to get wrong than right. Your time and money are too valuable to leave things up to chance – so what if you didn’t have to? Before you start spending every free minute you have outside of work planning a holiday, here’s why you should consider planning a one-of-a-kind experience with a Travel Associates advisor instead.

Plan an itinerary that’s unique to you

Forget algorithms. Because nothing can beat having a conversation with a real person, telling them about your dream holiday, and then both of you figuring out together how to make it happen. Travel Associates has more than 300 expert advisors in over 65 offices around the country.

And they’re not just in all the typical locations within the state capitals – there are experts on both coasts, inland, and well throughout Australia’s regions , which means you’re never too far someone who can organise your life-changing holiday. They each have an area of specialty, as well – so you can speak to anyone from a cruise connoisseur to a skiing savant.

Dedicated support and assistance around-the-clock.

One of the beautiful frustrations of travel is that, despite best-laid plans, things can and do go wrong. But when you’re on a Travel Associates advisor-planned trip, you have a safety net: 24/7 dedicated support. No leaving a voicemail, or filling out a contact form, or – worst of all – trying to speak to an AI chatbot for help. You’ll be able to speak with a professional immediately, who can use their years of experience to get you out whatever pickle you happen to find yourself in.

A crowd of people in Tokyo's busy Shibuya district.

Let someone else handle it

When we want to reach a fitness goal, we go to a personal trainer. When you need a suit or a dress made, you head to a tailor. So why shouldn’t you go to a travel professional for a hand-crafted itinerary? Your job is to work hard in your career so that you can access your travel dreams. Let a Travel Associates advisor do their job and make it happen for you. And nothing puts you in a better frame-of-mind for a holiday than having everything taken care of for you in advance.

Access the inaccessible parts of destinations

Maybe you’ve already ticked off a lot of the big bucket list destinations and seen a lot of the big sites. Maybe you’re at the stage in your travelling life when experience counts above all else. If that’s the case, that’s exactly when it’s time to consider a bespoke Travel Associates itinerary.

A footpath in Naxos, Greece leading into the town.

Its advisors will tease out all the things you want out of your trip (as well as the things you didn’t know you needed) and won’t leave a stone unturned when it comes to getting it for you. Whether that’s tickets to an impossibly sold-out show on Broadway , a reservation at a booked-out omakase restaurant in Tokyo , or croissants at an ”un-google-able” café in Paris, your advisor knows how to make it happen.

A true luxury holiday can’t be contained to a package. You deserve a bespoke holiday crafted by an expert Travel advisor that ticks every box, just for you. Call 13 70 71 or visit here  to find your nearest Travel Associates advisor.

4 Ways To Save on All Your Holiday Travel — Starting Now

one traveller holidays community

September 24, 2024 — 12:15 pm EDT

Written by Marc Guberti for GOBankingRates  ->

The holiday season is coming up, and that means plenty of travel. A recent CivicScience survey revealed that close to one-third of U.S. adults plan to travel during the holidays. While meeting family and friends during the holidays can yield unforgettable experiences, the expenses can add up .

Airfare, hotel rooms, event tickets, and gas are some of the costs people incur when they spend on holiday travel. Luckily, there are a few ways that you can save on these items.

Learn More: 6 Fall Travel Deals To Jump On Before They’re Gone

Use the Right Credit Card for the Right Trip

The credit card you use has a significant impact on your total expenses. For instance, international travelers can save a lot of money by using credit cards that don’t have any foreign transaction fees.

If you spend $2,000 on your international trip, a 3% foreign transaction fee will add an extra $60 to your expenses. That’s why it’s important to use a card with no foreign transaction fees for those trips.

You can also save money by using a credit card that offers the most points or cashback on qualifying purchases. Furthermore, some cards have generous perks, such as a free hotel night.

Pick Affordable Destinations

You don’t have to go to a big city or Disney World to have a good time. Looking at local areas that are a few hours away can help you save on plane tickets. You may discover new places and make new friends who you wouldn’t have made at a more well-known destination.

Use Air Travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday

If you’re buying plane tickets, it’s good to be flexible with the times you depart and arrive home. According to FareCompare , the cheapest days to fly in the United States are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Weekdays are cheaper than weekends for international trips.

Leaving and arriving on a Tuesday or Wednesday can lead to maximum savings. However, FareCompare offers an additional way to maximize your savings if you are traveling on a plane.

“Fly when most people don’t want to. Cheaper times include dawn, overnight routes, and flights around the lunch and dinner hours.” Late afternoons and mid-morning flights are the most expensive.

Visit Restaurants During Lunch Hours

If you intend on dining during your holiday travels, you can save money by visiting restaurants in the afternoon. Restaurants aren’t as busy in the afternoon and offer lower prices to bring people to their venues. Eating at dinner time along with most customers will result in higher prices.

12 once-in-a-lifetime holidays for travelling better

The trips that will inspire you to take one big adventure instead of a few...

sri lanka, sigiriya lion rock fortress

From slow travel to no-fly escapes and holidays by rail , there are many ways to be a better traveller and keep the environment in mind.

One approach, if you feel you must fly, is to book one once-in-a-lifetime holiday per year rather than take several shorter trips.

This means you're spending more time in one destination. You can connect with the locals, go off the beaten path to help reduce overcrowding at popular attractions, or get more involved in the community through cooking classes or wildlife conservation initiatives.

As we know a once-in-a-lifetime holiday can be a big investment, we've rounded up our favourite trips. Some of these will take you to far corners of the world, others are built as life-changing experiences, and many will help you feel like a local.

We've recommended trips of a lifetime that are in Continental Europe , long haul trips with a focus on sustainability in their respective destinations and holidays that take you on incredible adventures by rail.

You could head to Romania to stay in an ice hotel or head over to Japan to marvel at the cherry blossoms in all their pink-hued glory. It's all about giving yourself over to immersive and possibly life-changing experiences, safe in the knowledge that you’re also engaging in beneficial tourism.

A voyage across Australia on an iconic train

once in a lifetime holidays

Traversing a continent on a fabled journey in the footsteps of gold rush prospectors and legendary adventurers, the journey of Australia's Indian Pacific is nothing short of iconic. This famed rail trip will take you between Sydney and Perth, exploring the seemingly endless reaches of Australia's outback in style.

This tour begins in a five-star hotel in Sydney, before you spend three nights in a luxurious Gold cabin on board, gliding passed historic towns and sights. You'll stop off in Adelaide for a city tour and then arrive into Perth, ready to discover the gleaming west coast. Finally you'll get to discover the culinary delights and world-famous wines of Margaret River.

See the terracotta army and the Great Wall of China

once in a lifetime holidays

If you've ever dreamed of walking the Great Wall of China or standing among Xi’an’s underground terracotta army, hauntingly frozen in time, this China trip will help you check plenty of experiences off your travel bucket list.

You'll explore Beijing and Shanghai, as well as Suzhou, a city known as the 'Venice of the East'. There is also centuries of history to be uncovered at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Forbidden City, Shanghai’s vibrant Yuyuan Bazaar, and the unforgettable Master of the Nets Garden. Thanks to high-speed trains, you'll get to see more than you'd imagine and, thanks to five-star hotels, you'll do it all in style.

A safari across the Maasai Mara, Serengeti and more

once in a lifetime holidays

A safari holiday deserves a place on any bucket list, with incredible wildlife and landscapes that make it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For a trip that makes the most of Kenya and Tanzania, this safari adventure follows the 'Great Migration' across East Africa's epic national parks, from the legendary Maasai Mara to the sprawling Serengeti via the lush Ngorongoro Crater.

You'll get to spot the 'Big Five' on guided game drives, while watching out for herds of African elephants among the gorgeous local flora and mighty trees. You might even spot leopards and Cape buffalo – anything is possible.

Marvel at Sri Lanka's Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Yala National Park

once in a lifetime holidays

The ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage site that alone merits a journey to Sri Lanka. But on this incredible tour, it's just one of the many experiences you'll get to enjoy in a land of ancient sites, aromatic tea plantations, vibrant wildlife and wonderfully varied landscapes.

As well as climbing this world-famous rock formation, you'll get to enter the sacred Golden Cave Temple of Dambulla, see the grandeur of former capital, Polonnaruwa, make a flower offering in the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and look out for leopards, elephants and more on a safari tour of Yala National Park.

A cruise around Japan during cherry blossom season

once in a lifetime holidays

A two-week cruise around Japan (with a stop in South Korea as an added bonus) lets you see many of this enigmatic country’s highlights while including some less-visited destinations – and avoiding places that tend to get inundated by tourists. A trip during the spring cherry blossom season allows you to participate in the magic of the sakura bloom in all its transient, transcendent beauty.

You’ll also get to see Tokyo with its sleek skyscrapers, dazzling neon and ancient shrines, Osaka with its gorgeous temples, and Hiroshima with its devastating history. The cruise takes place aboard the award-winning Westerdam, which adds to your Asian immersion with regional cooking demonstrations and wine tastings.

Country Living's cruise to Japan includes an overnight stay at a hotel in Tokyo before you explore some of the underrated parts of the country.

Or travel Japan by land during autumn or spring, travelling through the Japanese Alps between Tokyo and Osaka to explore Mount Fuji, Lake Ashi, Yodogawa River, Nara Park and more.

Alternatively, join a tour that focuses on Japan's wonderful ancient traditions. You can choose to learn origami, flower arranging or Japanese cooking in Nara and join a traditional tea ceremony in Kyoto.

An unforgettable journey on one of the world's most iconic trains

a bedroom with a bed and a bunk bed

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is one of the world's most famous trains, and is synonymous with luxurious travel. A journey on this train takes you right back to the golden age of rail travel, when famed parties took on board and famous guests, including authors, politicians and royalty, travelled through Europe in its opulent carriages.

On this historic train, no detail is overlooked. You'll be greeted and shown to your cabin in one of the carefully restored 1920s carriages by liveried stewards. There are several journeys you can take on board this train, but one of the best is an overnight ride between two of Europe's most romantic cities, Venice and Paris.

Country Living is offering a special journey on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. You'll begin in Venice, where you'll have three nights to enjoy the City of Water, before boarding the train for Paris. Joining you for one night in Venice and onboard is broadcaster Michael Portillo, an expert in rail travel, who'll give a talk and mingle with guests in the train's sleek bar.

Over nearly a week, you’ll also get to see lovely Bari with its charming old town, the UNESCO-listed Sassi di Matera (in nearby Basilicata) with their ancient cave dwellings and rock churches, and Alberobello with its pyramid-roofed trulli limestone houses . You’ll even get to stay in a cave hotel in Matera and a trullo in Alberobello.

On Country Living's authentic Puglia tour, you'll learn to make pasta, visit an olive oil farm and visit the unassuming town of Locorotondo over six days.

A Venetian lagoon cruise with a market visit with a Michelin-starred chef

once in a lifetime holidays

Venice is eternally beguiling – a place to discover or rediscover as many times as you can, in as many different ways and seasons as you can. A lagoon cruise is one of the most special and memorable of all, initiating you into the main sights of Venice itself but also the spellbinding islands of Torcello, Chioggia and Murano - the latter iconic for its glassmaking.

Uniworld is the only luxury cruise line permitted to sail through the heart of Venice, thanks to the intimate size of its ships. Its itineraries also include exclusive access to famous sights while they're closed to the public, including St Mark's Basilica after nightfall, when you’ll watch an atmospheric lighting ceremony, and the Doge’s Palace in the early morning.

Country Living’s Venetian Lagoon cruise is joined for the last few days by Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett, who will join you on a browse around the Rialto food market before demonstrating some of her culinary secrets.

Another option for an unforgettable Venetian foodie experience is our cruise with Saturday Kitchen' s James Martin. You'll sail in luxury around the lagoon, with exclusive access to some of the city’s best landmarks, and hear from James, who'll craft a mouthwatering gala dinner one evening.

A Romanian tour with a stay in Transylvania’s ice hotel

bran castle, bran, in transylvania, romania,14 july 2023, place of dracula in transylvania, the courtyard of the castle, romanian famous destination in eastern europe

Romania remains largely off the tourist radar, making it an ideal spot for escaping the crowds as you explore the capital Bucharest, with its medieval monuments and enchanting Old Town, then venture into mountainous Transylvania. In the latter, Brasov beckons with its cobbled streets, Saxon walls, Gothic-style Black Church and bohemian cafés.

The high point of the trip, however, is the Hotel of Ice nestled amid snow-capped peaks and frosty forests. Built new each year from snow and ice blocks taken from a glacial lake, it offers thrilling winter sports including snow rafting. Last up is Bran Castle, which inspired the ultimate vampire legend, that of Count Dracula.

Country Living has a six-day once-in-a-lifetime Romania adventure that takes in Bucharest, Bran Castle, Brasov and the Hotel of Ice.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Extortionate prices

Company claim no supplement for single travellers, have you seen the cost of their holidays?Absolutely ridiculous.May as well travel with a company that does charge a supplement as it will still cost a hell of a lot less!

Date of experience : September 10, 2024

In dealing with the company by telephone, I find the staff most courteous, friendly and helpful. I have never felt dissatisfied in these dealings. The holiday itself was extremely enjoyable.

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave such a glowing review of your recent One Traveller holiday. I'm really pleased you enjoyed your holiday to Verona and enjoyed the whole experience.

On the whole ,very good food especially in the hotels we stay at Some music entertainment thrown in so always very enjoyable---Thank you Ruth T--Windsor
