The lodge offers eight comfortable Safari Chalets; one Leadwood Suite with its own plunge pool; and two luxury Makubela Suites, each with their own plunge pools, too. Each room also has a well-stocked minibar, bath, and indoor and outdoor showers.

Guests can enjoy safari game drives and/or guided walks in the company of the lodge’s experienced field guides and trackers, who will share their insights into the reserve’s conservation efforts – particularly in the protection of rhino. Idube Lodge

Blending affordability with experience, Idube Lodge is one of the original Sabi Sands camps & offers classic Big 5 game viewing & unpretentious comfort.

Family-owned Idube Lodge delivers affordability without sacrificing experience. Set at the heart of the Sabi Sands Private Reserve, its ten cottages lie surrounded by green lawns on which antelope and warthog graze. Shady trees ring with birdsong and you can begin your game viewing simply by sitting in a comfortable chair at the lodge or on your deck.

Big 5 game viewing waits however. In the company of an expert guide and sharp-eyed tracker you’ll explore the Sabi wilderness on morning and afternoon games drives. Night drives and guided walks complete the experience. Photographers will want to stake out the waterhole’s underground hide; those interested in community affairs can enjoy an insightful visit to a local village.

Idube has a classic safari feel. Timber and thatch dominate the main lodge, which offers a pool and convivial bar. Massages can be arranged on request and guests have access to a fitness room. Meals are served under starlight as often as possible and may also be enjoyed away from camp in a candle-lit grove.

Lodge Highlights:

Game viewing by 4X4 is the main focus at Idube. Morning game drives are balanced by late afternoon drives that blend into spot-lit night drives, your chance to see rare and unusual nocturnal animals. The heavyweights are well represented here – the Big 5 are in abundance and the general game viewing is great all year round. You’ll also have the opportunity to accompany your guide on nature walks, the best way to see the smaller details of the Sabi landscape and do some epic bird watching. Photographers will be keen to spend some time in the underground hide, set next to the camp’s productive waterhole.

For a different take on the environment, join a cultural tour and visit the local community. You’ll enjoy a taste of African cooking and can sit back to traditional dancing and a school choir.

The care by Walter was great from planning to leaving Johannesburg. The accommodations were perfectly chosen. If after a few days you thought it could not be better, you were told otherwise. It was an increase every day, with the 3 days safari in the Kruger, including overnight in tree house, the grand finale. I would book a trip anytime again at Safari Online.

Though we live in Australia, Safari online made planning for our family holiday so easy. Walter understood our requirements and nothing was too much trouble. The holiday was everything we wanted it to be and so much more. Every camp was ideally suited for our family and we loved each day, every early morning and evening game drive. Thank you to Walter for his attention to detail and his friendly, professional and caring manner. It was a trip of a lifetime and one that we will talk about forever.

We have booked at the Elephant Plains Lodge. We stayed there for a few nights and went on safaris. The lodge, the guide, the food and all the animals we have seen were fantastic. Really an outstanding experience. We can recommend Elephant Plains to everybody. Maybe you will not be as lucky as we were, becaucse we have seen the Big 5! But however you will not forget your stay at Elephant Plains.

I was already last year in South Africa and Zambia organized by Safari Online. It was a absolutely gorgeous trip. Everything was perfect. This was the reason I booked this year in May and June an new trip to South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. I got everything I expected. It was a dream again. I know I´m coming back.

In June/July 2016 we undertook a trip to Southern Africa to fulfill a lifelong intention. We stayed at six camps, safari style, and had a great time. All of our expectations were met or even exceeded. For example, we never expected to see honey badgers or sitatunga, given the secretive nature of those species, but we did! All travel arrangements and connections worked smoothly, which is astonishing since we had several dozen transfers and meeting points; all of the connecting personnel were prompt, professional, and welcoming.

They provide us the most taylored and customized honeymoon possible! everything was much better than we expected. We loved the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere and everyone made us feeling so incredibly special and gave us a unique insight. Over our game drives we managed to see all the big five plus some!!

Attention to detail & service provided was first class, from our very first email to the last day of our trip. Walter went above and beyond to ensure that we were notified of any changes, even up to our last day with a change to our flight time, at short notice. The safari was so much more than expected, from the rustic to the exceptional, every camp was different in it’s own way and our highlights are hard to single out just one as each camp was great.

Our extended family (16 travellers, including 8 children under ten years of age!) went on a wonderful safari adventure curated and organised by Walter Kohrs of Safari Online. It could not have been any better than we experienced. From our time in Cape Town, to visiting Victoria Falls, all the way through Zimbabwe and finally wrapping up at the amazing Chobe Safari Lodge, all the locations chosen by Walter were amazing.

His attention to detail, willingness to fine-tune and excellent responsiveness (over a period of several months!) could not have been better. He took time to visit us personally upon our arrival in South Africa, with lovely gift-packs and shared a wealth of advice, recommendations and tips. I cannot recommend Safari Online (and Walter Kohrs in particular) any higher. Absolutely amazing.

The communications and service from Walter was excellent, and we were continuously fully informed. The information package and book received on arrival were excellent. We felt that we had been allocated carefully selected lodges at each camp and every detail met or exceeded our expectations. The safari tour was wonderful, and a particular feature was the variety offered at each location which combined perfectly

Our experience with Safari Online was excellent. After becoming very frustrated trying to search for a safari destination on our own, we turned to Karina for help and she was a lifesaver. She responded to our requests promptly and gave us several options with links to each option; we ultimately chose Lukimbi. She then coordinated our flights to and from the property, arranged the drivers necessary to get us from the airport to the lodge and back again, and sent the appropriate paperwork to each of us to verify each step of the process. We had an amazing safari adventure at the lodge–the experience of a lifetime–and are so grateful for her help. We literally couldn’t have done it without her!

Idube Game Lodge

Project description.

idube safari lodge

Idube is a unique lodge situated in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. It is from this vantage point, in the heart of Kruger National Park, that safari seekers revel in 4-Star luxury.

Families and groups of friends can easily make this intimate lodge their very own camp. Idube is also an excellent choice for both business meetings and romantic celebrations that deserve a dramatic setting.

The name Makubela is a tribute to a female leopard who, when fatally mauled by a male, sought refuge at Idube before she died. This beautiful creature added so much wonder for the guests who spotted her in the wild. Just as they will never forget that experience, you will make incredible once-in-a lifetime memories in this very special part of South Africa.

The 10 Best Safari Lodges in Africa in 2022

The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.

idube safari lodge

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

South Korea court orders SK Group boss to pay a record $1 billion divorce settlement

Updated on: May 30, 2024 / 1:14 PM EDT / AFP

Seoul  — The chairman of South Korea's sprawling SK Group was ordered by a court on Thursday to pay his wife $1 billion in cash in the country's largest divorce settlement.

The Seoul High Court ordered Chey Tae-won to pay Roh So-young, the daughter of former president Roh Tae-woo, 1.38 trillion won, or slightly over $1 billion, as a settlement, court documents provided to AFP showed.

The amount was a significant increase from an earlier lower court ruling of 66.5 billion won and takes into account the contributions Roh So-young and her father made to Chey's success.

Speakers at Nikkei 'Future of Asia' Forum

SK Group runs businesses that include South Korea's leading mobile carrier and also controls SK Hynix, the world's second-largest memory chip maker.

  • 50 very expensive celebrity divorces

"It was reasonable to rule that, as his wife, Roh played a role in increasing the value of SK Group and Chey's business activity," the court said in a verdict obtained by AFP.

Chey married Roh So-young in 1988 but they have been separated for years. She appealed against the original settlement amount awarded in 2022, several years after Chey filed for divorce in what has become an acrimonious case.

The court said the new settlement also took into account the emotional suffering Roh So-young endured due to Chey's extramarital affair.

Chey has a child with his new partner.

The court said Chey "is not showing any signs of remorse for his foul behaviour in the course of the trial... nor respect for monogamy," ordering him to pay the settlement in cash.

Chey's net wealth was assessed by the court to be around four trillion won, meaning Roh So-young will take 35 percent of it in the settlement.

His legal team said they would lodge an appeal against the latest ruling, claiming the court had "taken Roh's one-sided claim as factual".

The Seoul High Court said Roh Tae-woo also helped Chey's business flourish during his five years as president from 1988, easing regulatory hurdles for SK's late former chairman Chey Jong-hyon, Chey Tae-won's father.

"Former president Roh Tae-woo played the role of a protective shield for ex-chairman Chey Jong-hyon" when the late businessman was trying to tap into the mobile carrier business, the court said, giving "intangible help" to the family.

Chey's lawyers disagreed, saying SK Group had been under pressure from the Roh government and had "provided various financial contributions".

"We will set things straight through the appeal," they said.

A former general, Roh Tae-woo was elected to the presidency in 1987 polls that were South Korea's first free and fair election in more than a decade.

He had earlier helped his military academy friend Chun Doo-hwan stage a military coup and take over as a dictator.

Roh Tae-woo is less reviled than Chun, in part for the economic growth he oversaw and his diplomatic outreach to the former communist bloc, which saw Seoul establish relations with both Moscow and Beijing.
