SUBANG: The Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah in a surprise move took over the wheel of the official vehicle and drove Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar to Seri Perdana, Putrajaya in his special visit to Malaysia on Monday (Nov 28).

Earlier, at about 11.45am, Anwar who was seated in the front passenger of the limousine was seen waving to media practitioners.

Also seated in the vehicle was the son of the Sultan, Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Mateen Bolkiah.

The BMW made its way to Putrajaya from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base in Subang about 41km away while being escorted by a team of outriders and security vehicles.

Earlier, Anwar was on hand to receive the arrival of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah as well as a delegation from Brunei at the RMAF base in Subang at 11.40am.

Moments upon arrival, the Sultan inspected a guard of honour mounted by the Malaysian Army, led by Major Mohd Faudzi Che Hashim.

Also greeting the Sultan was the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali.

The sultan’s visit to Malaysia was his first meeting with Anwar as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.

The Prime Minister also hosted a luncheon for Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah as well as Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Mateen and the delegation from Brunei.

According to a Wisma Putra statement, the Sultan’s last visit to Kuala Lumpur was from March 4 to 6, 2019 to attend the 22nd Annual Leaders’ Consultation between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.

Malaysia and Brunei have a long special relationship via common heritage and culture as well as the people‘s ties.

Based on this special relationship, the two leaders will take the opportunity during the visit to assess the progress of existing cooperation, while also exploring new potentials to improve relations and cooperation that benefit both countries.

In 2021, Brunei was Malaysia's 30th largest trading partner and the sixth largest in ASEAN with total trade worth RM8.03bil. - Bernama

This is the sultan’s first meeting with Mr Anwar after the latter was sworn in as the 10th prime minister of Malaysia.   According to a Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement, the sultan’s last visit to Kuala Lumpur was from March 4 to 6 in 2019 to attend the 22nd Annual Leaders’ Consultation between Malaysia and Brunei.   Brunei was Malaysia's 30th largest trading partner and the sixth largest in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) with total trade worth RM8.03 billion (US$1.94 billion) in 2021.

Malaysia PM Anwar arrives in Brunei for two-day official visit

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Brunei on Tuesday for a two-day official visit, his second official trip abroad since being appointed prime minister in November.

Datuk Seri Anwar, accompanied by his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, landed at Brunei International Airport at 3.13pm, Bernama news agency reported.

They were greeted by Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and his wife Princess Pengiran Anak Sarah.

The Malaysian prime minister was accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the airport, including inspecting a guard of honour mounted by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, the news agency said.

Mr Anwar is slated to have an audience with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah on Wednesday, followed by a bilateral meeting.

The two leaders are also expected to witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Malaysian Investment Development Authority and the Brunei Investment Agency, Bernama said.

Mr Anwar is scheduled to attend a dinner with Malaysians in Brunei on Tuesday evening.

He is expected to make an official visit to Singapore by the end of January. Mr Anwar made his first official visit as prime minister to Indonesia on Jan 8 and 9.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Jan 24  (Bernama) — Prime Minister, Datuk Seri  Anwar   Ibrahim , arrived here today for a two-day official visit to Brunei.

Anwar  was accompanied by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, for his second official visit abroad since being appointed as the prime minister.

The special aircraft carrying the prime minister and his wife landed at Brunei International Airport at 3.13 pm.

Upon arrival, he was greeted by Brunei Crown Prince, Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Anwar  was accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the airport. The national anthem of Malaysia, ‘Negaraku’, was played, followed by Brunei Darussalam’s national anthem, ‘Allah Peliharakan Sultan’.

The prime minister then inspected a guard-of-honour mounted by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.

Also present at the airport were Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir; Foreign Ministry secretary-general, Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin and the Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei, Datuk Raja Reza Raja Zaib Shah. 

Tomorrow, the Prime Minister is scheduled to have an audience with the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, at Istana Nurul Iman, followed by a four-eyed meeting between both leaders.

During the meeting, the two leaders are expected to use the opportunity to assess the progress of ongoing cooperation, to further strengthen relations and cooperation, as well as to venture new cooperation in common interest areas between the two countries.

The prime minister and the Sultan of Brunei will also witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) and the Brunei Investment Agency (BIA).

In addition, the Prime Minister is scheduled to attend a dinner with the Malaysian diaspora in Brunei tonight.

PUTRAJAYA (Aug 2): Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah will undertake a State Visit to Malaysia from Wednesday (Aug 2) to Friday (Aug 4).

According to a statement by Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) on Wednesday, the State Visit also coincides with the 24th Malaysia-Brunei Darussalam Annual Leaders’ Consultation (ALC) which will be attended both by the Sultan of Brunei and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“As the highest bilateral mechanism between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, ALC will provide the opportunity for both leaders to review the progress of bilateral cooperation and discuss outstanding issues as well as exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

“Both leaders are also expected to witness the signing of several bilateral instruments,” said the statement.

The Sultan of Brunei will be received in a State Welcoming Ceremony at Istana Negara by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al-Musta’in Billah on Aug 3.

Subsequently, he will have an audience with Al-Sultan Abdullah, followed by a State Banquet in honour of the Sultan and Bruneian delegation.

The Brunei Sultan’s visit would further strengthen the longstanding ties and multifaceted cooperation between the two countries and partners in ASEAN, added the statement.

In 2022, Brunei Darussalam was Malaysia’s 26th largest trading partner and the 6th largest within ASEAN with a total trade amounting to RM13.22 billion (US$2.98 billion), an increase of 68.4 per cent compared to the recorded value in 2021. – Bernama
