How many days should you stay in Florence?

If you only have one day in Florence, be sure to plan your itinerary, book tickets for the main attractions in advance, and arrive well-energized. Also, keep in mind that Sundays and Mondays may not be the best days to sightsee, as many places may be closed including the all-important Duomo.

Where to stay in Florence

If you’re only in town for a quick tour, it’s best to stick to central accommodations to minimize your commute time. The historical center is a no-brainer if you’re looking to cram in all the museums and monuments the city has to offer. And bonus – it’s super close to the train station. But if you’re planning a longer stay in Florence and want to immerse yourself in the local culture, consider the charming Oltrarno neighborhood south of the river, brimming with quaint artisan shops. Alternatively, sacrifice some convenience for romance and opt for a room with a view in the districts of San Niccolò or San Miniato al Monte. No matter which neighbourhood, choosing where to stay in Florence is actually fairly easy since the city offers plenty of beautiful B&Bs and boutique hotels tucked away in historic buildings as well as lovely rental apartments. Just make sure to book early, especially if you’re visiting during peak season – you don’t want to miss out on the best deals.

How to get to Florence

Santa Maria Novella Train Station

Now that you know when to go and where to stay , let’s take a look at how to get to Florence.

First off, traveling by train is a breeze with high-speed options that connect Florence to popular tourist destinations like Rome, Milan, and Venice. Plus, the Santa Maria Novella train station is within walking distance of the historical center.

You can also fly directly into Florence Airport, where trams and shuttle buses conveniently connect the airport to the Santa Maria Novella station. And if you’re flying into Pisa Airport, you’re only an hour away from Florence by bus.

Finally, although driving might seem like a tempting option, navigating the city’s restricted traffic areas can be rather challenging. The historical center is closely monitored by a network of video cameras, and parking can be a hassle. So it might be best to leave the driving to the locals and opt for other modes of transportation – your stress levels will thank you.

Depending on your itinerary, it may be more cost-effective to opt for the pass rather than pay for individual tickets.

There, you’ll find three neighborhoods – Santo Spirito, San Frediano, and San Niccolò – each with its own unique character and distinctive local feel. You’ll find an abundance of cute cafés, delicious restaurants, and pretty churches worth exploring, as well as the famous Pitti Palace with its beautiful Bobbli Gardens. And if you’re planning to bring home some authentic Italian souvenirs, you’re in luck – the Oltrarno is home to countless artisans who have made this area their creative hub.

The church of San Miniato al Monte, is one of the finest Romanesque churches in the region. Less crowded but no less spectacular, this viewing spot offers beautiful views over the city. And if you plan to visit around 6 pm, you’ll be treated to the beautiful Gregorian chants performed by the resident monks, making your experience all the more fascinating.

While many choose Pisa and Lucca  for a side trip from Florence, there are plenty of other options to consider, such as the famous vineyards of Chianti , the beautiful Siena and San Gimignano , the Val d’Orcia (where those stunning views you’ve seen in pictures come to life), and the Cinque Terre (Liguria’s iconic pastel-colored villages) or this tour of both the Cinque Terre and Portovenere .

On the other hand, remember that this itinerary is only a guide with recommendations. You can spend more days in the Tuscan capital or add other stops to your trip – Tuscany is a region filled with beautiful places .

1- Explore Piazza del Duomo

Your first day in Florence begins at the iconic Piazza del Duomo, set in the  heart of the historic centre . It is one of the most visited places in Europe and the world, and you will know why when you come across this area!

Piazza del Duomo is home to  world-famous architectural, religious and cultural monuments  such as the  Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore  (with its famous Dome by Brunelleschi), the  Baptistery  of St. John, Giotto’s  Bell Tower  and the  Museo dell’Opera del Duomo . 

Together, these landmarks form the  Complex of Santa Maria del Fiore , representing over 700 years of history in a single square.

Take the time to wander the piazza and admire its stunning architecture. You will also encounter other  historical buildings and museums  surrounding the square.

2- Visit the Cathedral (Duomo di Firenze)

Florence Cathedral (Duomo di Firenze),  one of the largest churches in the world , is globally known for its breathtaking beauty and architecture. 

Begun in 1296 in a Gothic style by Arnolfo di Cambio, it was structurally completed by 1436, with its  magnificent Dome   designed by Filippo Brunelleschi .  

You can visit the Cathedral and enjoy a spectacular view from its Dome, but I recommend  booking your ticket online and in advance . We did not plan beforehand, and everything was booked on the day (and we visited Florence in March). 

Yes, it is required to dress appropriately to access the Cathedral, meaning no bare legs and shoulders, no sandals, hats and sunglasses.

3- climb the bell tower (giotto’s campanile).

Next to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, you will find the Bell Tower (Giotto’s Campanile), a  free-standing campanile  part of the complex on the Piazza del Duomo and another perfect illustration of the  14th-century Florentine Gothic architecture .

You can access the summit balconies by  climbing a stairway of 414 steps  (no elevator available), but the panoramic views make it worth it!

It takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour to climb up the tower, admire the view and go back down. There is no elevator, so the stairs are the only way up, but the scenery is worthwhile.

4- Admire Florence Baptistery

The Florence Baptistery, also known as the Baptistery of Saint John, is a  religious building  and one of the oldest places of worship in the city. It presents a  captivating geometric structure with an octagonal plan , standing in the Piazza del Duomo and the Piazza San Giovanni.

Take the time to marvel at its  stunning architecture  covered with white and green marble from Prato and pass through its doors to discover an  outstanding mosaic  embellishing the ceiling.

5- See the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo

The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is a  stunning museum  you should add to your Florence bucket list, especially ideal for history buffs and art lovers.

It is home to the  most extensive collection of Middle Ages and Renaissance sculptures , with masterpieces and original works of art created for the Cathedral, the Baptistery and Giotto’s Campanile.

6- Stop by Piazza della Repubblica

You continue your journey to Piazza della Repubblica, a  lively square originally the site of the city’s forum in Roman times . You will find in its centre the  Colonna della Dovizia , also known as the Column of Abundance, where the Roman Forum once stood.

Today, it is a charming square to wander around, shop for souvenirs or enjoy a coffee at one of its  historical cafés  including Caffé Gilli, Caffé Paskowski and Caffé delle Giubbe Rosse. 

7- Marvel at Palazzo Vecchio

The Palazzo Vecchio is the  town hall of Florence , overlooking Piazza della Signoria, which features a copy of Michelangelo’s statue of David. It also features  a museum you can visit and a tower you can climb . 

Its  museum  is a fascinating place to travel back in time and where you can admire Roman ruins, a Medieval fortress and impressive Renaissance chambers and paintings.

Its  tower , one of the most imposing medieval towers in Florence, is 95 meters high and offers beautiful views of the historic centre.

Yes, you can climb up the Palazzo Vecchio tower for stunning views over the city. The way up includes over 400 steps and closes when it rains for safety reasons.

8- Discover Piazza della Signoria

Opposite Palazzo Vecchio, you will find Piazza della Signoria, a  w-shaped square  and  the centre of political life in Florence  since the 14th century. It is the primary site of the  origin and history of the Florentine Republic  and remains today the political focus of the city.

Besides the famous Palazzo Vecchio, you will come across  a copy of Michelangelo’s David statue  (the original is in the Galleria dell’Accademia), the  Loggia dei Lanzi  (an open-air sculpture gallery), and the  Uffizi Gallery .

You end your first day in Florence with the Uffizi Gallery (Galleria degli Uffizi), a  renowned art museum  and one of the  most famous museums in the world  for its outstanding collections of ancient sculptures and paintings and unique masterpieces by  great Italian artists  such as Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

It is a  must-see attraction  for anyone visiting Florence, whether you are into art or not. So plan your visit in advance to avoid the long queue. 

I recommend spending at least 2 hours at Uffizi Gallery to have enough time to see the main artworks and masterpieces without rushing.

Day 2 – San Marco & San Lorenzo

1- discover piazza san marco.

You will start your second day in Florence with another iconic square, Piazza San Marco, dominated by the  17th-century facade of the San Marco Church .

This charming square is located in the northern part of the city, a short walk from the train station, the Duomo and  next to the Accademia Gallery , where you will find the marble statue of David by Michelangelo.

If you have time, take a short detour and  explore the interior of the church .

2- Visit San Marco Museum

On your wander around Piazza San Marco, stop by the Museo Nazionale di San Marco, an  art museum housed in a restored medieval Dominican convent . 

This former monastery, founded in the 13th century, is  worth the visit for its architecture  and is home to superb frescoes and paintings. One of its highlights is the  Annunciation fresco  at the top of the staircase leading to the dormitories – and the gorgeous colours and  artworks by   Beata Angelico .

3- Tour the Accademia Gallery (Galleria dell’Accademia)

Not far from Piazza San Marco, you will also find the Accademia Gallery, also known as the Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze, a stunning  art museum home to Michelangelo’s statue of David  and other sculptures from the artist.

Besides the magnificent giant marble sculptures, you will come across  several halls within the gallery  offering artworks by great Italian artists and an extensive collection of paintings by Florentine artists.

I recommend  booking a guided tour in advance  to immerse yourself in the captivating history of Italy and learn more about the Renaissance and the Medici family!

4- Eat at Mercato Centrale

For lunch, head to Mercato Centrale (San Lorenzo Market), a  large market hall  where you will find everything you need, from a delicious Tuscan meal to local ingredients to cook yourself or a souvenir to bring home.

Start your visit by  exploring the outdoor section  of the market, which runs along the streets and where you will find items such as pottery, clothing, books and leather goods.

Finally,  step inside the magnificent hall  designed in 1874 by Giovanni Mengoni to discover food stalls of every kind and treat yourself to tasty Italian cuisine.

5- Explore Palazzo Medici Riccardi

You continue strolling around Florence with the Palazzo Medici, also called Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the  Renaissance home of the powerful Medici family .

The palace is well-known for its  Cappella dei Magi , a private chapel decorated with frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli, an artistic treasure.

And if the building has experienced transformations over the last centuries,  parts of this splendid residence remain intact  and are worth the detour.

6- See the Basilica di San Lorenzo

In the same area, you will come across the Basilica di San Lorenzo, one of the  largest and oldest churches of Florence  and the  burial place  of all the principal members of the Medici family.

This church is a great place to discover  influential works of art  and impressive architecture, and it is also part of the  San Lorenzo complex , which includes the Laurentian Library and the Medici Chapel. 

BOOK YOUR ENTRANCE TO THE MEDICI CHAPEL

Your last stop of the day will be the magnificent Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, one of the most  important Gothic churches  in Tuscany.

Marvel at its stunning exterior and  step through its doors to experience remarkable works of art  by some of the greatest artists of the Renaissance era, including the  Trinità  by   Masaccio, the frescoes by Ghirlandaio in the Tornabuoni Chapel and the  Crucifix  by   Giotto.

The perfect place to end this immersive day in Italian history!

1- Explore the Basilica of Santa Croce

Your third and last day in Florence begins at the Basilica of Santa Croce, an impressive church known for its  funerary monuments  of famous Florentines, the  burial place  of renowned artists such as Michelangelo and its  Pazzi chapel .

Not only the exterior architecture is stunning, but there is also an  immense artistic richness  inside the basilica – worth the visit! 

Plus, do not forget to stop by the  Renaissance masterpiece of the Palazzi Chapel  and marvel at the work of art by the same builder of the Duomo: Filippo Brunelleschi. 

2- Walk across Ponte Vecchio

Get ready to cross the water! Head to Ponte Vecchio, a  medieval stone arch bridge   over the Arno River . It is the only bridge in Florence not destroyed during World War II and is renowned for its shops built along it. 

The shops on the bridge have been there since the 13th century, but they were initially all types of stores. In 1593, it was decreed that  only goldsmiths and jewellers would be allowed  to improve art and wealth – I thought it odd when I crossed the bridge, but now I understand why!

It is a beautiful bridge to ramble on and admire. And for a better view,  walk along the river banks to one of the adjacent bridges . 

3- Stroll through Oltrarno

Once across the river, take some time to stroll through Oltrarno, a  charming neighbourhood  full of historical sites, extensive gardens, artistic traditions and some of the best views in Florence.

Below are some of the  best things to do and see  in this lovely area.

4- Visit the Brancacci Chapel

You will find the Brancacci Chapel  in the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine , most of which was destroyed in a fire in 1771.

Considered a miracle that the Chapel survived this intense event, it is sometimes referred to as the  Sistine Chapel of the early Renaissance  for its painting cycle, among the most famous and influential of the time.

You can access the Chapel by passing through the cloister. Once inside, take the time to  admire remarkable frescoes .

5- Tour Palazzo Pitti

The Palazzo Pitti is a Renaissance palace and a  large complex of outstanding galleries and museums  housing significant collections of paintings, sculptures and works of art. 

The original palace was built for the Pitti family in 1457, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi. Today, it hosts  an impressive collection of art , including works gathered by the Medici family.

Here are  the museums you will find inside : the Palatine Gallery and the Royal Apartments, the Modern Art Gallery, the Costumes Gallery, the Silver Museum and the Porcelain Museum.

So plan your visit in advance and book your ticket online to make the most of your time.

6- Relax at the Boboli Gardens

Behind Palazzo Pitti, you will find the stunning Boboli Gardens, a historical park opened to the public in 1766, which stands as a  beautiful open-air museum . 

This large green area houses  centuries-old oak trees, a small lake, marble sculptures, grottoes and fountains . It is the perfect place to relax in summer or to enjoy the flowers blooming in the spring.

It is also the ideal place for families with children, as you will come across the fascinating  Grotta del Buontalenti , an artificial cave filled with fake stalactites and stalagmites.

No, there is an entrance fee (11€) to access the Boboli Gardens from Palazzo Pitti and Forte di Belvedere or Porta Romana.

To end your perfect day and 3-day getaway in Florence, head to Piazzale Michelangelo to  enjoy a peaceful sunset over the city .

Full of replicas of Michelangelo statues, you will find this square  on a hill on the south bank of the Arno River . Day or night, it offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Florence and its  iconic landmarks , including the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery and Santa Maria del Fiore.

It is a  great place to relax , take unforgettable photos and watch the sun slowly set on the horizon.

How to get to Florence

The best way to get to Florence is by plane . The city has an international airport (Amerigo Vespucci) connected to the main European cities. If you cannot find direct flights, check out Pisa International Airport, which is only 50km away.

The other option is to reach this beautiful Italian city by train . Florence benefits from a high-speed railway hub with trains departing regularly and linking to the entire of Italy – and Europe.

How to get around Florence

You have several options for getting around the capital of Tuscany.

The best way to travel around Florence is on foot . The city is compact, and its main attractions are within walking distance of each other, so you can easily explore them on foot, even on a short day trip or weekend getaway. Plus, it is the ideal way to see the best sights whilst exercising!

Walking will allow you to soak up its wonderful cultural atmosphere and find hidden gems you might otherwise miss.

The second option to get around Florence is by bike . It can be a fun experience and a fantastic way to travel around the city faster whilst reducing your carbon footprint!

Finally, if you are tired or the destination you want to reach is too far,  you can use public transport.  Florence has a reliable and efficient bus (and tram) system that is fast and affordable. 

My experience – I visited Florence as part of a  road trip through Tuscany . I had a car and parked it near the Arcipressi tram stop, which then took me about 30 minutes to reach the centre with the tram. Finding free parking is impossible, so plan accordingly. Once in the centre, I walked around, which was easy and quick. 

Firenze Card: what you need to know

When researching and planning your 3-day trip to Florence, you might come across the Firenze Card, the  official museum pass  of the city.

The card costs  85€  and is  valid for 72 hours  from the first time you have used it. It allows one  admission to the   major museums and galleries , including the Uffizi Gallery and Galleria dell’Accademia and any current exhibitions.

In addition, the card lets you  skip the lines , and there is  no need for reservations  (for most places).

With a large collection of masterpieces and works of art, Florence is the perfect destination for art lovers, so  is buying the Firenze Card worth it?

It depends on  how long you stay in the city  and  which museums you want to visit . Plan ahead, and with this list, work out if the card is a better option for you or if paying for individual admission tickets is more cost-efficient.

Best time to visit Florence

The best time to visit Florence is in  spring (April-May)  and  autumn (September-October)  when the weather is sunny and warm, but the city is not overcrowded. 

I visited Florence at the end of March, and it was lovely! The weather was sunny each day, with temperatures around 20 degrees, and the tourist spots were not too busy.

I would avoid visiting in the summer,  as it can become hot, expensive and crowded – not the best way to enjoy this beautiful city. 

Winter is another option  if you would like to avoid the crowds but be ready for the cold weather. Also, some places may be closed, and there might not be as many open accommodations, so check and book ahead of time.

Being a responsible traveller in Florence is possible! Here are some sustainable tips for reducing your carbon footprint:

• Book direct flights  (which require less fuel than indirect flights)  and  offset your carbon footprint . But, do not use carbon offsetting as a complete solution. 10 things to know before visiting Florence

Florence has been a key destination on Italian itineraries since the Grand Tour days, when British and German aristocrats traveled through the peninsula to enrich their cultural baggage and gain status. While much has changed since the 17th and 18th centuries, the Tuscan capital remains a major draw, as proven by the thousands of people who reach the city every day.

With an abundance of world-class museums, restaurants and architectural wonders, planning ahead is essential to make the most out of your trip to the cradle of the Renaissance is essential. Here are the things you should know before getting to Florence.

1. Add an extra day or two to your stay

The vast majority of travelers visiting Florence only spend a couple of days in the city. While it is true that the historic center is compact, taking it all in such a short time can be overwhelming. Queues are to be expected around major sights – especially in the high season (April to October) – and as soon as you arrive you will realize that each alley, square and building has a story to tell, a story that deserves more than a hurried glance. Plan for four or five days to avoid rushing from one place to the other and to have some time for spontaneous detours.

2. Getting to the city from the airport is easy with public transport

Expensive taxi rides are easily avoided when flying into the city. Florence’s Amerigo Vespucci airport is well connected to the city center thanks to the T2 tram that runs to and from the Santa Maria Novella railway station. Tickets only cost €1.70 and the trip takes about 25 minutes.

3. Consider arriving in a city nearby

When looking for the best way to reach Florence from abroad, it may be worth checking flights to other airports as well. Florence’s airport is relatively small and not serviced by many low-cost airlines. Pisa ’s Galileo Galilei airport sees a lot more traffic – nearly double the passengers than Florence – and links to many European cities thanks to frequent Ryanair, EasyJet, WizzAir and Vueling budget flights. Getting to Florence from Pisa takes a little over an hour with a regional train.

Another destination worth looking into is Bologna , in the neighboring Emilia Romagna region. More low-cost airlines operate in Bologna than in Florence and high-speed Trenitalia and Italo trains run between the two cities in under 40 minutes.

4. Bring comfortable shoes and walk everywhere

Once you reach the inner city, walking is the best way of getting around. The UNESCO-inscribed historic center of Florence, contained between its ancient walls and newer ring road, covers an area of approximately 5 sq km and the main attractions can all be explored on foot.

There are alternatives: two tram lines run east and west of the city center and bike-sharing services are available in all neighborhoods. Still, with crowds flowing through the narrow streets of Florence’s historic core, walking is often faster and more enjoyable than any other means of transport.

5. Art and history buffs should check out Firenze Card

The Firenze Card is a pass that allows access to most of Florence’s museums for 72 hours, starting from the first visit. At €85 it’s not exactly cheap, but if you are planning to explore many cultural institutions it may be more convenient than buying individual tickets at each entrance. 6. Make restaurant reservations

Some of the more popular trattorie fill up their seats days in advance – if you have specific restaurants you intend to visit during your stay, it’s worth giving them a call to make sure a table in advance. There are exceptions – some historic eateries such as Trattoria Sabatino, Osteria Centopoveri or Trattoria Mario continue to function on a “first come, first served” system. Remember that Italians tend to dine late – don’t expect restaurants to serve food before 7pm.

7. Expect queues to meet David (even with a timed ticket)

It is possible to buy tickets for the Galleria dell’Accademia , home to Michelangelo’s David and other Renaissance masterpieces, valid for specific time slots. This, however, does not ensure that you’ll avoid standing in line outside the museum. Your best chance at avoiding queues and crowds is by visiting first thing in the morning by booking a ticket soon after the opening.

8. Visit Palazzo Pitti before 8:55am for a discount

Palazzo Pitti , the former residence of the Medici family and the largest palace on the southern side of the Arno River, houses one of Florence’s most impressive collections of art, Renaissance-era furniture, period costumes and porcelains, plus a rich program of temporary exhibitions. During most of the year, you will receive a discount if you enter the museum before 8:55am – you will be rewarded for waking up early by paying €12 instead of €16.

9. Don’t expect all museums to be open at all times

In a city that promotes itself as the ultimate art destination, you’d expect opening times to be somewhat consistent. Think again – each institution opens and closes on different days, at different times, with changing hours depending on the season. For instance, the Uffizi closes on Monday, the Cappelle Medicee museum closes on Tuesday and Cappella Brancacci opens on Monday, Friday and Saturday between 10am and 5pm. When planning your tours, make sure to check the opening hours of every museum on your itinerary.

10. Florence is safe, but…

Florence is a safe city, but incidents that can ruin your trip can happen. Pickpockets have been reported in busy areas such as the Santa Maria Novella railway station and on public transport during peak hours when trams are packed with passengers. Keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.

I hope that people who intend to visit this city will also fall in love with this city with all their heart like me. So, I will try my best to share everything I know so that everyone can have a “true Italian” trip rather than “watching flowers while riding on horseback” like a tourist who come from afar.

Guide to Florence: How to get to Florence?

Because it is a famous destination, it is easy to get to Florence, because it has an international airport. Almost from all major European cities have flights to Florence airport. However, due to a hot destination means that in the tourist season it will be very expensive and very crowded. You should book tickets a few months in advance.

Therefore, I recommend you to choose some airports near Florence, no need to direct flying to the Florence airport. For example, Pisa International Airport is smaller and offers much cheaper flights. From Pisa airport, there is a direct bus to Florence that takes almost 1 hour. Ticket is around 9 euros. Besides, Pisa is also very small. You can absolutely fly there first, visiting for half a day and then take a train/bus to Florence. The details on how to get to Florence you can find here .

Taking the train to Florence from within Italy is also easy. Basically, Florence, Rome, Milan, Naples are transit points connecting all cities together, so no matter where you want to go, you will definitely find a way. There are international trains to Florence. But long distance trains/buses are very tiring, so if you don’t have the strength, I advise you not to choose this way.

Florence travel tips: Where to stay in Florence?

Florence is the tourist center, of course, there are many hotels, hostels and airbnb of all kinds. As always, I recommend booking, airbnb or hostelworld. However, recently Agoda also has very good deals if booking a few months in advance. You should check it out.

Like taking train or bus to Florence, I suggest that you can rent a room in the suburbs of Florence if the rental price is very low. Usually, if you book a month or more early, all hotels and hostels in Italy are very reasonably priced. Finding a room or bed ranging from 20-30 euros is regular. But if the places to stay you are looking for are overpriced – especially around July to September, then look for an accommodation in the suburbs. Spending more a little train fee and a little time, but sometimes the price will be half cheaper.

Tips for visiting Florence: What to note before going to Florence?

This is the most important section! Pocket tips when planning to visit Florence in particular and Tuscany in general.

1. Florence is more than just a city. It takes a lot of time!

Visiting Florence, basically you just spend 3 days 2 nights is enough. This is in case ticking off the list of things to do in Florence. I would also like to warn you that this list only shows the best of Florence, not the most “leisure” list. Because in my opinion, the Uffizi museum alone must take up half a day. Which I visited twice. Each time visit a part of the museum thoroughly.

But why do I say it takes time? When my friends are planning to visit Italy, I always repeat again and again that “For Tuscany only, you needs at least a week. And the most central point is Florence.” Why? Because from Florence you can visit the ancient   town of San Gimignano , Pitigliano “in the clouds”, the beautiful Siena , the old Volterra . The most important is make a roadtrip to visit the picturesque Tuscan countrysides such as – Val’Orcia. (Click on each link to see the complete guide to visiting these places).

Why don’t I add Pisa as well? Because Pisa only needs half a day, if you only come to check in. Do you still really want to know about Pisa? I can’t promise this. The more I read the document, the greater the amount of historical and cultural information about Pisa and Florence.

Thus, if you aim to only go to Tuscany, then Florence is a good base, because the places I mentioned can all be day trips. Oh, but the caveat is that if you intend to visit Tuscany in general, you should… go straight to countryside of Tuscany to stay. No need to linger long in Florence.

2. Visiting Florence? Don’t ride! Visiting Tuscany? Car is inevitable!

Because the Florence series can be said to be part of the Tuscany region series. Many of the tips in this article refer to Tuscany.

Florence is very crowded, you should not take any rides. If you rent a car in advance, you should leave the car in the suburbs, or go to a few deserted small cities around to park. There is no parking space in Florence.

But if you intend to explore Tuscan countryside, I highly recommend renting a car. Because the Tuscan countryside does not have a special tour (or only rush tours, if any). There is no public transport. Self-drive is the most active.

3. Choose the right time… unless it’s forced

Florence’s peak tourist time is from July to September. In addition, the Easter period, which is April, is also very crowded. Traveling in these two times, you only see the huge flows of people…

I strongly recommend you to visit Florence in the spring or autumn – which is around March and October, November. These two times, tourists flocking here is less and more comfortable. Also December is also a good choice. That month is also crowded but it is Christmas month, there will be many wonderful Christmas markets. So this month’s crowding is acceptable.

4. It is highly recommended to book the museum/palace tickets in advance

Especially if you visit Florence in the peak tourist season. At times like these, extremely crowded. Buying tickets online in advance is a great solution. However, you still have to remember that even if you already booked have tickets, the risk of having to queue is also very high! You should prepare mentally to queue or choose the time when tourists go to eat to visit. As I said in the article of things to know before coming to Italy, tourists often eat at an earlier time frame than locals. You can absolutely choose these time frames to visit to avoid crowds.

5. Authentic Florence cuisine

Florence is most famous for its steaks, wines, and fresh vegetables and cheeses. That is, if you have come here, don’t order seafood, just order meat. Try as many wines as you can, especially “table wine” (vino al tavolo). Eat as “authentic” ingredients as possible. And it’s best to visit the list of must-eat foods in Florence for ideas.

6. Shopping in Florence

If you want to shop in Florence, know what to buy. Florence which is famous for beef, leads to leather products. Going to Florence is best to forget about mass-produced clothing brands. Go straight to the leather market and shop.

7. Always check the opening hours of the places you want to visit first

In Italy, museums, churches or castles often have opening hours and opening days quite impromptu. If you plan to visit these places, it is best to check the opening hours before coming. In the series what to do in Florence and museums worth going in Florence, I will detail the operating times at the places I recommend to you. However, be careful is still better.

8. Talking about Florence means talking about art!

And if possible, you should know the history of art and some art movements before visiting museums, statues, squares, churches, and castles in Florence. Florence has a great art scene, many of the greatest artisans/artists in the world.

You don’t need to go into the details of art and history, but it’s highly recommended to learn a little about Renaissance art, Baroque, the style movement, and so on. So when going to museums, castles… is not surprised. Because art reflects culture and historical thinking. And I guarantee that the more you know about a place, the more you will love it.

9. Love art? Don’t get Stendhal Syndrom

This is a real symptom. In short, looking at too many works of art makes you dizzy and have a headache. This syndrome is also known as Florence syndrome. Why? The whole of Florence is an art museum. Works of art are literally everywhere.

So what is my advice? If you intend to visit the museum, do not go to two or three in the same day. Relax, one a day is enough. Even so, with the huge number of works here, visitors are still easily “bored” by seeing too much beauty.

However, I still advise you if you love art, don’t give up. I have the opportunity to go around Europe for a bit, but looking back, only Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria have the best art museums.

10. Very very very good to know about the history of Florence before visiting Florence

Not only should you know about art, it is highly recommended to learn a bit of Florence’s history before coming here. I guarantee you will see this city with completely different eyes, not just its pure beauty. I recommend learning about the 14th to 16th centuries, when the Medici were at their most prosperous, when the Renaissance was at its peak.

Now, the matter with Florence is this: It’s a purely artistic city. Coming here is to admire the art, photography is main purposes, but “things to do” in the sense of local uniqueness is a bit difficult. In other words, almost Italy has turned into a living museum. In tourist-centric cities like Florence, it’s very difficult to find “unique” and unusual things to do. But I still hope you have the best memories in Florence. Don’t forget to read the article What you need to know before coming to Italy to know the essential things.

Let’s start!

By the way, I will include churches in this list as well. About the museums, I will have its own article.

Watch the sunrise on Michelangelo’s hill (Piazzale Michelangelo (Michelangelo Square)

Michelangelo hill at night. It’s because I’ve tried both sunset and late night that I strongly recommend you should come here in early morning.

To get to Michelangelo hill, you have to go to the legendary Ponte Vecchio bridge, cross the Arno river, go towards Pitti palace and then climb up the hill. This hike is not easy. But the result is well worth it – the view over the entire city of Florence is breathtaking.

I emphasize “watching the sunrise” for two main reasons. The first is that Michelangelo Hill is a famous place in Florence, so at any time of the day it will be more crowded than in the morning. Especially at sunset. At that time, when you go up, you can only see people and people. If you want the best experience on Michelangelo Hill, it’s best to go early in the morning. Bring your breakfast there, have a little picnic, watch the sun slowly shine over a city that once stood at the top of Europe in the heyday of art and a boom in commerce.

What is the second reason? Italy in general and Florence in particular, during the day it is very rare to find the “soul” of the city. Nowadays, local people live in the suburbs. Center is only for tourism business. There are only certain times you can feel that spirit. In Florence it is early morning. Like Venice, it must be late at night. Sicily is at Aperitivo time… Why does Florence have to be early morning? You can say that I am a slightly emotional person, but in my opinion, with the epic, monumental architecture of Florence, it is never better to feel the “giant” spirit waking up more accurately than at dawn.

P/s: In addition to breakfast, you should bring water, comfortable sports shoes and a scarf to prevent cold.

Watch the sunset on St.Trinity Bridge or Carraia Bridge

Why didn’t I mention the view on Florence’s most famous bridge, the Ponte Vecchio? This is a great place to visit. But that bridge is very small, tourists will definitely squeeze together on it. You will not be able to slowly take pictures to enjoy the brilliance of the Florence sunset if you have to immediately make room for someone else to take pictures in a hustle and jostle atmosphere.

Therefore, I suggest you visit the Ponte Vecchio bridge before sunset when the “golden street” (street selling jewelry and precious metals) has just turned on the lights is the most beautiful. Then slowly go back out of the center to two open bridges, St.Trinity closer, and watch the sunset.

Fascinated by the magnificence of the great cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Piazza del Duomo

This church is one hundred percent sure to be on every “must do” list of anyone coming to Florence. It is overwhelmingly huge and breathtakingly beautiful.

If you want to climb to the top of the church tower to enjoy the view, I suggest you buy tickets online first. Because you probably won’t be able to wait patiently in the queue. Best time to climb the tower? Around 4, 5 pm, the sun is less intense, the light is ideal.

Next to Santa Maria is the chapel of Saint John. It’s a whole giant building block.

Shop for leather goods in front of the church of San Lorenzo

Referring to shopping in Florence must mention leather goods. In front of the church of San Lorenzo is an endless long leather market. Italian leather goods, I have to say, they are beautiful, and they look vintage.

In general, the leather stalls on the streets are mainly not of Italians, the owners are all foreigners. But their leather goods are also beautiful. If you’re not sure, just go to the stores. But if you buy from outside, remember to bargain.

Christmas Market (or not) in front of Santa Croce Church

A prominent feature of Italy is church is everywhere. Every city has a few dozen. So churches will always be on the must-see list. I suggest that if you go to France, Italy, Spain, Hungary, you should take the time to visit their churches. The architecture and decoration of churches in these countries far exceeds that of anywhere else.

However, if it comes to Christmas, from the beginning of December onwards, there will be an international Christmas market in front of Santa Croce church. Absolutely love it. The first time I went to Florence was just in time for Christmas. In the market, there are many savory dishes, and many interesting things. That’s also the first place I bought clotted cream!

Signoria Square (Piazza della Signoria)

This square is the second most important square of Florence, after the Piazza del Duomo where the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is located.

Here a gallery statues in Greek legends, the statue of David, the statue of Poseidon in front of the Palazzo Vecchio (this palace translates to the Old Palace), formerly the palace of the Medici.

Along the road right next to this square is a high-end shopping street with many high-end stores. A shoppers’ paradise!
