Everything you need to know about Azamara Cruises cabins and suites

Azamara Cruises is a mid-level cruise line boasting more elegant, classic, upscale decor than the likes of mainstream cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean or Carnival. Its ships feature dark woods with sophisticated furnishings, patterns and color schemes, and its cabins are no exception.

Because Azamara 's ships are all from the former Renaissance Cruises' R Class, which was launched more than 20 years ago, the cabins are on the small side, but they're still comfortable, functional and well appointed.

Here, we'll give you a rundown of the different types of cabins you can book, how big they are and the sorts of amenities that come with each.

Azamara Cruises cabin primer

Azamara has four general cabin types: inside or interior, outside or oceanview, balcony or veranda, and suite. They fall into five main categories: Club Interior, Club Oceanview, Club Veranda, Club Veranda Plus and Suite.

On each of its ships, Azamara offers seven accessible staterooms in a mix of cabin types: two Club Continent Suites, three Club Interior Staterooms and two Club Oceanview Staterooms (see below). These accommodations offer larger main doorways (at least 33") and bathroom doorways (at least 34") to allow entry for wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility aids. They are also equipped with lowered closet bars, a 5-foot turning radius and anywhere from 227 to 324 square feet of space. Bathrooms have ramped thresholds, grab bars, roll-in showers, lowered sinks/vanities, adjustable-height toilet seats, fold-down shower benches and handheld showerheads.

Unfortunately, there are no dedicated solo cabins on any of Azamara's ships, but the line does offer singles discounts on occasion, and when it doesn't, anyone who pays double -- known as a single supplement to account for one person staying in a room designed for double occupancy -- receives double loyalty points toward their Azamara Circle status .

All staterooms, regardless of type or category, are outfitted with at least one queen bed that can convert to two twins, a desk/vanity with a phone, nightstands with reading lamps, at least one TV that's a minimum of 40", outlets and USB charging ports, a mini-bar, individual climate controls, closets, a safe, a hair dryer, robes, slippers, umbrellas and fresh flowers.

Each cabin has its own bathroom with towels, bath products, a shower, sink/vanity, storage shelves and a toilet. Additionally, all rooms include daily make-up and turndown services, as well as 24-hour room service, a tote bag, a daily bulletin of activities and turndown treats.

Inside cabins on Azamara ships

Azamara's Club Interior staterooms are 158 square feet, and they're the least expensive accommodations onboard, offering no windows or balconies.

However, they make up for their lack of natural light and ocean breezes with their more economic price point and a fully dark sleeping experience that passengers swear gives them some of the best rest they've ever had.

Only standard amenities mentioned above are included here, but if you're someone who plans only to be in your room to shower and sleep, an inside cabin could be a perfect fit for you.

Oceanview cabins on Azamara ships

Although balcony cabins are, technically, oceanview cabins, in this context, the line's Club Oceanview Staterooms refer to rooms that have only a window that doesn't open -- no balcony.

Oddly, Azamara's outside cabins are smaller than its interior accommodations, with the former measuring just 143 square feet. Even more oddly, some of these cabins are equipped with sofa beds that can sleep up to two additional passengers.

Squeezing that many people into such a small space could prove to be tight, but we suspect the natural light will help lighten the mood.

Balcony cabins on Azamara ships

Azamara's balcony cabins come in two types.

Club Veranda Staterooms

These are the most basic balcony accommodations onboard, and they feature 175 square feet of living space, plus a 40-square-foot veranda for a total of 215 square feet.

For ships as old as Azamara's the number of balcony accommodations is surprising, with many rooms equipped with verandas where cruisers can sit and enjoy drinks and some fresh air on their own little swaths of deck.

Club Veranda Plus Staterooms

Although Club Veranda Plus rooms are the same square footage as Club Veranda Staterooms, this is the first cabin level where passengers will really see a difference between cabin types in the way of additional amenities.

Your cabin type from this level upward will be considered in conjunction with your Azamara Circle loyalty status (assuming you're a member) to determine the level of benefits you'll receive during your voyage.

All passengers booked in Club Veranda Plus accommodations will receive the standard offerings mentioned under previous cabin categories, plus complimentary Wi-Fi minutes, one free bag of laundry every seven days, one complimentary meal for two in a for-fee restaurant every seven days, priority embarkation and disembarkation and free in-cabin alcohol.

Suites on Azamara ships

Suites on Azamara's ships are divided into four types, and each provides its occupants with complimentary butler service.

Club Continent Suites

The smallest of the line's suite accommodations, Club Continent Suites are 266 square feet with 60-square-foot balconies. They include all of the amenities mentioned above, as well as a large seating area with a 55" flat-screen TV.

In addition to the TV and the increased square footage, some Club Continent Suite bathrooms also have bathtubs instead of only a stand-up shower.

Club Spa Suites

These suites are located near the Sanctum Spa on each vessel. In addition to soothing, natural decor, cruisers booked in these rooms can expect healthy snacks to be delivered daily. They can also enjoy in-cabin spa music and their very own glass-enclosed spa soaking bathtub.

Additionally, Club Spa Suites have rain showerheads and all of the amenities afforded to veranda cabins but with a larger (55") TV and 414 square feet of space, plus a 60-square-foot balcony.

Club Ocean Suites

These 478-square-foot luxury digs come with 173-square-foot verandas, a separate living room and bedroom setup (each room with a 55" TV); marble, shower-only bathrooms (except on Journey and Quest, which have bathtubs); dressing rooms with vanities; and additional closet space.

Further, passengers staying in these suites have access to all of the perks to which those in balcony cabins are entitled.

Club World Owner's Suites

The Club World Owner's Suites are Azamara's most lavish, offering everything afforded to those booked in Club Ocean Suites but with significantly more space -- 603 square feet with 233-square-foot balconies.

Like Club Ocean Suites, they have marble bathrooms (with bathtubs on Journey and Quest) and separate living room and bedroom areas, each with its own television (55" in the former and 40" in the latter), as well as the basic amenities mentioned above.

Bottom line

Although Azamara's ships are a bit on the older side, they ooze class. Cabins are stylishly decorated in neutrals and feature high-end furnishings and dark woods with plenty of storage space and extra touches, such as fresh-cut flowers and 24-hour room service, that will make you smile.

The number of choices isn't as vast as what you'll find onboard ships from some of the larger, more mainstream cruise lines, but there's something -- from insides to lavish suites -- to fit every taste.

Guide to Azamara Cruises’ Azamara Circle loyalty program

Like most cruise lines, Azamara Cruises has a branded loyalty program, Azamara Circle, which allows frequent cruisers to maximize their travel investment by earning points for each night they sail with the brand. As passengers earn points, they move up the ranks of five loyalty tiers, earning additional perks and amenities — including onboard discounts, free cruise nights and access to exclusive parties.

This article breaks down the program, from earning points to what each loyalty level offers and which cabin category bookings will allow you to punch above your weight in terms of perks.

Ways to earn points

Azamara’s points-earning system is fairly straightforward. The line has eight cabin categories, each of which earns passengers a certain number of points per night they cruise.

• Club Interior (2 points)
• Club Oceanview (3 points)
• Club Veranda (5 points)
• Club Veranda Plus (6 points)
• Club Continent Suites (8 points)
• Club Spa (18 points)
• Club Ocean (18 points)
• Club World Owner’s Suites (18 points)

Note that the number of points you’ll receive depends on the cabin category you booked rather than the category you end up with. If you’re upgraded to a higher-level cabin, you won’t receive a higher number of points.

Because Azamara’s ships do not have accommodations for solo cruisers , anyone traveling alone must pay two cruise fares, as all cabins are designed for double occupancy. Therefore, all solo passengers will receive double points for each night of their voyage.

Program tiers and benefits

There are five tiers in the Azamara Circle loyalty program:

• Adventurer (1-149 points)
• Explorer (150-299 points)
• Discoverer (300-749 points)
• Discoverer Plus (750-2,999)
• Discoverer Platinum (3,000-plus points)

Adventurer is the easiest level to obtain, as you reach it after just one sailing, meaning your benefits will kick in on your second voyage. (To enroll, you must create an account with Azamara.)

All loyalty tiers receive 10% off select voyages once per quarter, free internet minutes based on tier level, discounts and upgrades on Hertz car rentals, the services of a loyalty ambassador and onboard host, a members-only happy hour on each sailing, exclusive email updates, future cruise credits of $300 per cabin for each referral who books with the line and beverage package discounts. Additional perks and specifics for each tier are below.

Unlike the first level of most other cruise lines’ loyalty programs, cruisers at the Adventurer level earn some valuable savings in addition to the ones already mentioned:

• 5% off future cruises booked on board
• Savings on future voyages in the form of up to $300 in onboard credit (when  you book future cruises on board during the first half of your cruise) and a 50% reduced deposit
• 30 free minutes of Wi-Fi or 20% off an unlimited internet package (more if staying in a Club Veranda Plus cabin category or higher; see chart below)
• 10% off signature spa treatments
• 5% discount on the line’s Ultimate Beverage Package

Many other cruise lines reward passengers with free cruises only after they have reached the highest loyalty tier. However, Azamara begins awarding free cruise nights to passengers when they hit the Explorer level and each subsequent level thereafter. That means passengers can enjoy further savings on top of percentage discounts when they book cruises from Explorer level onward.

Cruisers can reach Explorer level in as few as nine nights (or five nights if traveling solo) if they stay in one of the three top-level cabin types. Explorer perks include:

• Two free cruise nights (must redeem within 12 months on sailings of seven nights or longer)
• Savings on future voyages in the form of up to $300 in onboard credit (when you book future cruises on board during the first half of your cruise) and a 50% reduced deposit
• 60 free minutes of Wi-Fi or 35% off an unlimited internet package (more if staying in a Club Veranda Plus cabin category or higher; see chart below)
• Free laundry service for one bag of items per cabin per seven-night sailing (two bags if booked in a Club Veranda Plus cabin category or higher; see chart below)
• 15% off signature spa treatments
• 10% discount on the line’s Ultimate Beverage Package

You can attain the Discoverer tier after 17 nights (or nine nights if traveling solo) in one of the three highest-level cabins. Discoverer-level cruisers receive:

• Four free cruise nights (must redeem within 12 months on sailings of seven nights or longer)
• 6% off future cruises booked on board
• 90 free minutes of Wi-Fi or 50% off an unlimited internet package (more if staying in a Club Veranda Plus cabin category or higher; see chart below)
• 20% off signature spa treatments
• 15% discount on the line’s Ultimate Beverage Package
• Priority check-in at select ports
• Exclusive onboard get-together

Each level of the loyalty program is entitled to free Wi-Fi minutes, depending on tier level. However, those staying in Club Veranda Plus cabins or higher will receive more, based on a combination of cabin type and loyalty level, according to the following chart — even if they’ve only reached Adventurer status.

Additionally, passengers at Explorer level or higher will receive two bags of complimentary laundry service if booked in any of the cabin categories listed on the chart below.

Royal Caribbean Group sold Azamara to Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm based in New York, in early 2021. Effective Feb. 1, 2023, the line’s loyalty program is no longer reciprocal with those of former sister brands Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises .

The elite level that makes a difference

The Discoverer Plus level is one that spans the largest number of points, making it the first level at which cruisers can earn enough to take a weeklong sailing almost completely free. Six nights are awarded when this level is first reached, along with three additional nights at 1,500 points and another three at 2,250 points.

Azamara Circle members at this level are entitled to:

• Six free cruise nights, plus three additional nights at 1,500 points and 2,250 points (must redeem within 12 months on sailings of seven nights or longer)
• 7% off future cruises booked on board
• 120 free minutes of Wi-Fi or 75% off an unlimited internet package (more if staying in a Club Veranda Plus cabin category or higher; see chart above)
• Free laundry service for one bag of items per cabin per seven-night sailing (two bags if booked in a Club Veranda Plus cabin category or higher; see chart above)
• 25% off signature spa treatments
• 20% discount on the line’s Ultimate Beverage Package

Best elite perk

Discoverer Platinum is Azamara Circle’s highest level of loyalty. It’s the only tier that, when reached, rewards cruisers with enough nights for a completely complimentary sailing of at least a week in length. However, apart from the initial four additional free cruise nights, free Wi-Fi and an extra 5% discount on the Ultimate Beverage Package, this tier doesn’t offer much that’s different from what you’ll receive at the Discoverer Plus level.

Discoverer Platinum amenities are:

• 10 free cruise nights, plus three additional nights every 750 points after reaching Discoverer Platinum status (must redeem within 12 months on sailings of seven nights or longer)
• 10% off future cruises booked on board
• 150 free minutes of Wi-Fi or a free unlimited internet package (more if staying in a Club Veranda Plus cabin category or higher; see chart above)
• 25% discount on the line’s Ultimate Beverage Package

Bottom line

Because Azamara is a premium line, it’s no surprise that its loyalty program offers passengers quite a bit more discounts and opportunities to earn free cruise nights than mainstream lines.

There are marked differences between Azamara Circle tiers, but cruisers hit the sweet spots when they achieve at least the Discoverer Plus level.

Because joining the program requires minimal work — just a registration — there’s no reason not to join, as the perks can add up over time, especially if you plan to cruise with Azamara regularly.

Kremlin says Trump's conviction is about White House 'elimination of political rivals', as Russian forces advance in Ukraine

Moscow says Donald Trump's guilty verdict shows that all "legal and illegal" means are being used in the United States to get rid of political rivals.

Trump became the first US president to be convicted of a crime on Friday morning, Australian time when a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying documents to cover up a payment to silence a porn star ahead of the 2016 election.

"If we speak about Trump, the fact that there is simply the elimination, in effect, of political rivals by all possible means, legal and illegal, is obvious", Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told a news briefing on Friday, local time.

The 34 felony charges of which Trump was convicted were brought against him by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg , rather than the US Justice Department, which is nominally overseen by the White House.

There is no evidence US President Joe Biden or his campaign had anything to do with the charges being brought against Trump or with the way the case was prosecuted.

Speaking after the verdict, Mr Biden's campaign said it proved that "no one is above the law", but would do little to change the dynamics of the November 5 election.

Trump, 77, is due to be sentenced on July 11, though he plans to appeal the verdict.

Russian forces advancing in Kharkiv

The Kremlin's statement came after Russia's defence minister said the country's forces were advancing in Ukraine, and had taken control of 28 settlements in May.

Speaking at a meeting of regional defence ministers in Kazakhstan, Defence Minister Andrei Belousov said Russian forces had captured a total area of 880 square kilometres so far this year, and had forced Ukrainian troops to fall back by 8 to 9 kilometres in key parts of the north-eastern Kharkiv region.

"Russia is continuing the special military operation and all its objectives will certainly be achieved," Mr Belousov said.

"Russia's military grouping is forcing the enemy out of their positions, advances are taking place in all tactical directions.

"Russian armed forces are systematically reducing the combat potential of the Ukrainian armed forces."

Russia casts its decision to send tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022 to safeguard its own defence and that of Russian speakers living in Ukraine.

Kyiv and most Western countries call it an illegal war of conquest, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has vowed to expel every Russian soldier from Ukrainian territory.

NATO chief dismisses Russian warnings

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Friday dismissed warnings by Russian President Vladimir Putin that allowing Kyiv to use Western weapons for strikes inside Russian territory might lead to an escalation.

Speaking on the sidelines of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Prague, Mr Stoltenberg said the alliance had heard such warnings many times before.

"This is nothing new. It has … been the case for a long time that every time NATO allies are providing support to Ukraine, President Putin is trying to threaten us to not do that," he said.

"And an escalation – well, Russia has escalated by invading another country."

Mr Putin on Tuesday warned NATO members against allowing Ukraine to fire their weapons into Russia, and again raised the risk of nuclear war after several allies lifted restrictions imposed on the use of weapons donated to Kyiv.

In a marked policy shift, Mr Biden on Thursday approved Ukraine using American weapons to strike targets inside Russia that were attacking the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed in Prague.

Mr Blinken said the change in direction was simply the US adjusting and adapting to the battleground, and indicated it was made necessary by Moscow's continuing attacks on the city, which is just 30 kilometres from the border with Russia.

Russian fighter jets flying inside Russia out of reach of Ukrainian air defences have been supporting the offensive on Kharkiv by loosing high-precision glide bombs into the city , where they have caused numerous civilian casualties.

Germany followed America's move soon afterwards, with a government spokesman on Friday saying Ukraine could use weapons supplied by Berlin to defend itself against attacks launched from just inside Russia against the Kharkiv border region, in accordance with international law.

Lithuania, Poland and the Netherlands have already spoken out about the need to allow Ukraine to define its own targets as it defends itself from Russia's invasion.

But other allies such as Italy refuse to go this far, with its foreign minister arguing that his country was banned by its constitution from allowing Kyiv to use donated weapons outside Ukraine.

First prisoner swap in months made

Ukraine and Russia exchanged prisoners for the first time in nearly four months on Friday, after negotiations mediated by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Mr Zelensky y said 71 members of the Ukrainian armed forces had been returned from Russia, along with four civilians.

Russia's defence ministry said Ukraine handed over 75 people in a deal brokered by the UAE, RIA news agency reported.

Pictures released with a statement from the committee showed servicemen draped in blue and yellow national flags.

Ukrainian officials said they brought back 19 defenders of Snake Island, a tiny rocky outcrop in the Black Sea that became a symbol of Ukrainian defiance in the first days of the war when Ukrainian guards refused to surrender to Russian forces.

The committee also said that as a part of the swap, the bodies of 212 Ukrainian defenders were handed over by Russia.

US, allies 'gravely concerned' by North Korean involvement

Also on Friday, the US and its main allies said they were "gravely concerned" by deepening cooperation between North Korea and Russia, and called for an end to North Korean arms transfers for use against Ukraine.

Mr Blinken joined foreign ministers from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Britain, as well the EU representative, in issuing a joint statement highlighting their recent coordination of sanctions measures in response to such activity.

"Our governments stand in resolute opposition to these continued arms transfers, which Russia has used to strike Ukraine's critical infrastructure, prolonging the suffering of the Ukrainian people," the foreign ministers said.

They added that the deepening North Korea-Russia cooperation was in "flagrant violation" of multiple UN Security Council resolutions.

Moscow and Pyongyang have denied accusations of arms transfers, but vowed last year to deepen military relations.

The joint statement also condemned Russia's March veto of a UN resolution that would have extended the mandate of an expert panel tasked with monitoring the implementation of UN sanctions against North Korea.

Days before its mandate expired, the UN panel submitted a report confirming that, in a violation of UN sanctions, a North Korean-made ballistic missile known as Hwasong-11 had struck the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.
