The agent, George, quickly found an appropriate policy. He answered, with patience, the numerous questions that I had. In the end, I felt comfortable with the choice. Great experience with Peter on trip insurance!

I talked with Peter and he helped me understand what the travel insurance would cover in the event of something unforeseen. He was also patient while guiding me to the right policy for my situation. The bonus is that he was friendly and professional, which made things go fast and smooth. I've used Aardy previously for travel insurance to Europe and now a second time for a domestic trip. Both times I've had a great experience. I highly recommend them!

Great and professional service

Great and professional service. Very helpful person at the other end of the line. My suggestion to improve the coverage for travelers is to have the choice of prolong your coverage at a later date if you happen to want to extend to stay in a foreign country for another month or two and not having to go thru the entire new application for a new policy.

Amazing Customer Service

I called AARDY two times with questions concerning travel insurance policies. Both agents, Janet and Miranda, were terrific. Both extremely friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable. When I booked the policy Miranda was having some technical issues with the system. She persisted and was able to bind the policy within a few minutes.

What is an aardvark?

As burrowing mammals with porcine snouts, aardvarks are true to their name, which translates to “earth pig” in the Afrikaans language.

The nocturnal animals use their long noses and keen sense of smell to sniff out ants and termites, which they lap up with an anteater-like tongue covered in sticky saliva. These insects make up most of the aardvark’s diet, although they’ll occasionally eat beetle larvae.

Aardvarks use their long, powerful claws to tear open termite mounds, as well as dig underground burrows in which they sleep and care for their young.

Once abandoned, these well-constructed burrows, which can have many entrances, are recycled by other animals, including reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and birds. Porcupines and hyenas may modify the burrows for their use, for instance by expanding the entrance . (Related:  Why some animals are more important to ecosystems than others . )

Aardvarks have stocky bodies, pinkish gray or grayish brown skin , and a short tail. To thrive in their sub-Saharan habitat, the insectivores sport large, rabbity ears that disperse heat, sparse body hair, and thick skin that’s impervious to insect bites.

People rarely see aardvarks, mostly because they’re solitary, nocturnal, and spend so much time underground. They also lack the reflective tissue that makes the eyes of some animals glow in the dark.

Reproduction

Because of the aardvark’s elusive nature, little is known about its mating habits in the wild.

Males and females come together briefly to mate. Gestation lasts eight months , after which a female births a single cub. The baby, hairless and about six pounds, is born during a peak time of food availability—either before or during the rainy season.

The mother stays in the burrow with her offspring for two weeks, at which time the baby can accompany her on foraging trips outside the burrow. Young aardvarks can eat solid food at three months, and are fully weaned and on their own at six or seven months .

Conservation status

The International Union for the Conservation of Species considers the aardvark a species of “least concern ,” meaning their populations are stable. The species has robust numbers in protected areas, such as South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

Aardvarks do face threats, however, including habitat loss from agricultural development and a decline in insect prey due to pesticides.

In Zambia and Mozambique, the bushmeat trade is a threat to aardvarks, according to the IUCN . Some are also poached for their teeth, which are believed to prevent illness and are worn as good luck charms by some tribes.

Aardvarks may also be susceptible to drought, one of the effects of climate change in Africa . In 2013, hot, dry conditions in South Africa’s Tswalu Kalahari Reserve killed off some of the aardvarks’ insect prey. Unable to regulate their metabolism , several aardvarks died.

You will receive a monthly local bus pass which will allow you to travel around the city in which you are living (Jerusalem or Tel Aviv) using the public bus system. This will enable you to get to and from your internship or volunteer placement, classes and explore the city. Private busses will be provided by the program for all group activities outside of the city, such as hiking trips, field trips, and seminars. An extensive network of inter-city busses and trains makes travel between cities easy as well. While you are responsible for your own travel during your free time, the staff is always available to help you plan their free weekends or chofesh (vacations).

Yes, you are welcome to pay in installments provided your tuition is paid in full by the appropriate deadlines. All Program participants are required to purchase an Israeli SIM card and phone service through an exclusive arrangement we have set up with the Israeli company ‘Partner.’ Through this phone service, Partner also provides our staff with features that help to ensure the security of the participants including a group SMS system. Students must bring with them an unlocked cell phone into which they will insert their Israeli SIM card. The SIM cards will be distributed to the students upon arrival. The fee for the phone service is paid directly to Aardvark Israel and sign up forms are included in the students’ applications online.

Meet ‘Scarface’ — The Most Notorious Lion to Ever Rule the Jungle

A nyone who grew up watching The Lion King, or watched it as a parent, has a slight soft spot for lion points of pride. How could you not cheer on Simba after all? Even decades after its release, fans never lost interest in the magnificent animals roaming the African continent. That fascination was fueled by increasingly impressive wildlife footage from organizations like National Geographic. And that footage allowed people around the globe to first “meet” and fall in love with Scarface — the most notorious lion ever to rule the jungle.

Meet ‘Scarface’

One well-known lion lived on a reserve in  Masai Mara , Kenya, from 2007 to 2021. His name was Scarface (otherwise known as Scar). Scarface got his name after a territorial fight in 2012. Scar’s eye got injured during the dispute (which Scarface won alongside his brothers Morani, Hunter, and Sikio).

Unfortunately, Scarface died on June 11, 2021. Starvation spurred on by his old age led to his death. He was an incredible 14 years old at the time.

Before his death, he was beloved by people around the world. After watching him dominate the reserve on wildlife shows on National Geographic and the BBC’s Big Cats Diary, tourists flocked to Kenya to see him in person. Scarface was so famous that he even had a  dedicated Facebook page .

How Old Do Lions Typically Get?

Lions rule the land. They are apex predators and feared by other animals and people alike. So, they must live for a long time, right? Unfortunately not. Even predators face dangers, including from their own kind. That means a lion’s lifespan is highly unpredictable. However, one thing is certain. Lions in captivity tend to far outlive lions in the wild.

Lions living in the wild also differ in their  life span  depending on whether we’re talking about males or females. If a lion survives diseases, hunting, poaching, starvation, and battles over territory, it may live between 10 and 14 years old. Females tend to be on the higher end of that scale, with males falling slightly short of the top age. 

And  experts estimate  that only one out of every eight lion cubs makes it to adulthood. So those that make it to 10, or even 14, years old have already lived an impressive and full life.

What Is Masai Mara?

Unless you have researched (or been on) a safari, you may not have heard about Masai Mara. But the Masai Mara National Reserve & Conservancies is well worth the trip, thanks to its never-ending adventures.

The entire area is an unfenced reserve comprised of multiple conservancy areas privately owned and managed by Masai families. It was officially established in 1961 and subsequently expanded in 1974. Currently, Masai Mara spans 583 square miles (1,510 square km). And the entire area is packed to the brim with amazing animals.

What Other Animals Live in Masai Mara?

Scarface lived on a Kenyan reserve in Masai Mara. It is one of the preferred destinations for tourists looking for an authentic safari experience. And, boy, does the reserve reward those who visit it!

In addition to lions, tourists will also see Cape buffalos, leopards, and elephants . And if they are lucky, safari goers might spot a rhinoceros . Additionally, if you time your trip right, you may get the sought-after treat of watching the ‘Great Migration.’ This bi-annual event showcases an amazing sight: the migration of zebras, wildebeests, and gazelles between Masai Mara and the Serengeti.

And that is only a small sampling of the abundant wildlife you can spot while on safari in Masai Mara. The region is home to an impressive 90 mammal species. 

Lucky visitors may catch a glimpse of the fast cheetah, towering giraffe , or enormous hippo. Additionally, some smaller animals may capture rapt attention from visitors. Some species include the vervet monkey, side-striped jackal, olive baboon, bushbaby, and aardvark .

But don’t forget to look up while you are in Masai Mara! The area has over 500 species of  birds , 57 of which are raptors. So keep your eyes peeled for a Kori Bustard , Bateleur eagle, and Fischer’s Lovebird.
