Recently, a newspaper article caught my eye. A ship builder in Saint-Nazaire, in the department of Loire-Atlantique, had just built the largest cruise ship in the world. This liner can hold more than 6,700 passengers as well as 2,100 crew members. Unbelievable! It reminded me of our Mediterranean cruise of several years ago. During that trip, I realized that there are pros and cons for traveling by cruise ship versus land travel.

We arrived by taxi at the cruise terminal in Barcelona and, after a brief wait, we boarded our ship. We walked along a narrow hallway to reach our cabin, on the starboard side of the ship. Super! The cabin was very small but well designed, and there was a large porthole. We put away our clothes in the numerous cabinets in the cabin. In the evening, as we headed toward the dining room for dinner, we felt a shudder: the ship was weighing anchor and setting sail.

The next day, the ship was moored at our first port of call: Cannes, on the Côte d’Azur. We had made a reservation for an excursion to go to Antibes during the morning and to Nice for the afternoon. Our disembarkment unfolded slowly because the cruise ship was too large to dock in Cannes. It was necessary to use a life boat modified as a shuttle to reach the dock where the buses were waiting for us. Rolling along La Croisette toward the small town of Antibes, I looked for movie stars but unfortunately there were none: it was not the time of the Cannes Festival.

We had a good time in Antibes that morning but it was too short. We would have really wanted to visit the Picasso Museum but there wasn’t enough time; it was necessary to go to Nice for the afternoon. It was after this, and several others similar events, that I gradually became aware of the advantages and disadvantages of traveling by cruise ship.

You can weigh the pros and cons yourself and make your choice. I wish you a bon voyage!

  • Your hotel room travels with you; it isn’t necessary to repeatedly unpack and repack your bags during the trip.
  • You go to a different port nearly every day, so you see different countries and you can use the travel time to relax, to suntan, or be by the pool instead of being on the train, the airplane, or driving.
  • You can dine in a deluxe restaurant each evening and enjoy the cuisine to your liking.
  • The ship offers a large variety of entertainment for adults as well as for children.
  • There are many opportunities to meet other travellers and often people are happy to speak to you: it’s a good opportunity to find people who speak French .
  • You will have the opportunity to visit perhaps a place that you would not necessarily have otherwise chosen.
  • If it’s hot during an excursion, you know that the air conditioning awaits you on board the ship.
  • Often, the cruise itself is less expensive that what you would spend on hotels, meals and transportation (watch out for the alcohol and the excursions however which are generally not included).

  • The time that you spend during a stopover is often very restricted: it’s not easy to explore, wander about, or hang around onshore during the trip.
  • Your interactions with local people are limited, especially since you often move about in groups (several hundred tourists disembark at the same time).
  • In general, you dine in the same restaurant each evening; little opportunity to taste the local cuisine.
  • Without an excursion, it isn’t easy to go see the tourist sites, and these excursions rapidly step up the price of the cruise.
  • The cruise ship is sometime crowded, and you must tolerate the constant noise of your neighbors and their children.

'The Americans are landing': A grandmother's 80-year-old diary documents opening of D-Day

Scribbled in french shorthand, louise hamel’s diary still captures the power of the moment.

translation cruise in french

COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France – A single sentence in the fading pages of Louise Hamel’s diary documents the first moments of the day that would become a turning point in World War II.

Tuesday, June 6, 1944.

" Les Americans débarque en France ,” read Hamel’s diary entry, seemingly written too quickly for proper accents and grammar.

The English translation: “The Americans are landing in France.”

The wife of a French farmer held prisoner by the Germans in Czechoslovakia, Hamel concisely recorded the moment when nearly 133,000 troops from the United States, Great Britain, Canada and other allies began to land in Normandy on D-Day to liberate Europe from the control of Nazi Germany. Nearly 4,500 would die in the intense fighting that followed, but their cross-channel invasion of Nazi-occupied France would slowly turn the tide of the war.

Hamel was forever grateful to the soldiers who sacrificed so much so that France could again be free. For the rest of her life, she would do her part to honor the memory of those who never made it out alive.

In 1947, her family donated farmland to create the Normandy American Cemetery, the final resting place for more than 9,000 of the fallen heroes, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day invasion and the operations that followed.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden and other world leaders will travel to the cemetery overlooking the English Channel for a ceremony commemorating the 80 th anniversary of D-Day. In the audience will be some of the veterans who fought in Normandy, many of them returning for the first time since the war.

For Hamel, “it was always important to thank the liberators, to not forget what they did for her and our freedom today,” said her granddaughter, Stéphanie Le Bris, an interpretative guide at the cemetery.

Le Bris, 48, discovered her grandmother’s diary after her death in 2006 at age 86. The small booklet and some of Hamel’s other belongings were kept in a sewing box that relatives found on the family farm. When Le Bris opened the diary, her eyes fell immediately upon the D-Day entry and her grandmother’s understated account of the Allied troops’ landing.

In a sense, Hamel’s diary is a historical record, one young woman’s eyewitness version of events that would put Allied forces on the path to winning the war.

For Le Bris, it is much more.

“It was,” she said, “my last gift from my grandmother.”

'What is happening to you?'

The fighting started early that morning.

At 6:30 a.m., the first wave of Allied troops came ashore at Omaha Beach, not far from the farmhouse in the Normandy village of Colleville-sur-Mer, where Louise Hamel lived with her daughter and her husband, Félix, before he had gone off to fight for France.

German bullets rained down and punched the waters of the English Channel as the soldiers jumped from their landing craft and waded to the shore. Still, they slogged through the waters, rifles in hand, and eventually reached the beach, where more enemy fire awaited them. At Pointe du Hoc to the west, rangers using rope ladders scaled the tall cliffs overlooking the blue waters below. From the top of the promontory, Germans watched their advance and pummeled them with heavy machine gun fire and hand grenades.

Hamel was home when the fighting broke out. She had been advised to stay away from the beach and, if possible, to leave the village altogether. As the combat intensified, the 24-year-old mother fled Colleville with her daughter and mother-in-law and headed for the safety of the French countryside.

They would not return until noon the next day, June 7, after the village had been liberated.

Hundreds of miles away, Félix Hamel hungered for news of his family. Mobilized by the French Army in 1940, he had been arrested by the Germans a few days later and sent to Czechoslovakia. Given his agrarian background, the Germans put him to work on a farm.

“My dearest, darling Lissette,” he wrote to his wife in a letter dated Aug. 2, 1944. “What is happening to you? Still no news from you. I have written everywhere, Belgian, American, English and French Red Cross. As of today still no news. … Seeing what’s happened there, I have to think positively. Me, my health is good. Hoping as always that I will soon receive a letter from you, receive from your Félix, a thousand tender kisses.”

Félix Hamel remained in captivity until the final weeks of the war.

Finally freed in May 1945, he returned to Colleville and his darling Lissette. One day he went to check on the family farmland, to see how it had fared during the war. At the top of hill, he saw not animals but coffins. The land had been turned into a morgue.

A couple of years later, the French government approached him with a proposal: Would the family donate their land to create a permanent cemetery and memorial for the soldiers who had fought and died in France?

He said yes, of course. How could he say no?

Honoring the fallen

Félix Hamel seldom spoke about the war or his time in captivity.

Le Bris’ knowledge of the family’s wartime history comes from what she was able to piece together from his letters to Louise and from her own conversations with her grandmother, who spoke often of her endless gratitude to the soldiers who liberated France.

Louise Hamel, who lived her entire life in Colleville, never forgot the sacrifices of the soldiers that day and worked for the rest of her life to honor their memory.

For years, she attended the Memorial Day celebration for the soldiers who never made it out of Normandy alive and continued to place flowers on their graves – a tradition she and other French women had started just a couple of weeks after D-Day, when the fallen soldiers were resting in temporary graves.

A black-and-white photo Le Bris discovered in a museum decades later shows several women, baskets in hand, decorating what appears to be freshly covered graves. Le Bris did some sleuthing and discovered that one of the women is her grandmother.

In 1999, the U.S. Army’s First Infantry Division, whose soldiers were among the first to storm Omaha Beach and faced some of the fiercest resistance, presented Hamel with their insignia, a shoulder patch with a red numeral “1” centered on a green shield. She treasured the gift and the sentiment it represented.

“She told my father, ‘When I die, I would like to have the insignia in my casket for my funeral,’” Le Bris said. “This period of her life was really, really important to her.”

Le Bris, who was 15 when her grandfather died, often accompanied her grandmother and other family members to the cemetery to pay their respects. “Every June 6, we went at 6:30 in the morning to see the reenactment on the sea,” she said.

On the 50th anniversary of D-Day, the family attended the World War II commemorations, then invited some of the veterans back to their home. “They slept at the farm,” Le Bris said. “I knew for (my grandmother) that it was really important to welcome them. It was a way to thank them for what they did.”

Le Bris worked as a travel agent in Paris for six years but in 2007 landed a job as an interpretative guide at the cemetery, one of several overseas burial sites managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The Normandy cemetery and memorial receive more than 1 million visitors every year.

Le Bris gives tours in English and French, welcomes family members of fallen soldiers and helps them find their loved one’s burial plot among the thousands of white marble headstones shaped like crosses or Stars of David.

She never talks about her own family history unless someone asks if her relatives were there on D-Day. Only then does she tell them the story of Louise and Félix and the many other French citizens who were part of the resistance.

“Every day, and especially when I’m alone in the cemetery, I think about the courage of these people that were civilians and that were soldiers and what they did,” she said.

Le Bris will be at the cemetery on Thursday for the D-Day commemorations. If her grandmother were alive, Le Bris knows she’d be there, too. In her honor, Le Bris plans to wear a small piece of jewelry, a gold Napoleon Bonaparte coin that once belonged to Louise Hamel.

“That's the way,” Le Bris said, “for me to have her with me.”

Even in death, Louise Hamel is still paying her respects those who helped free France.

AI language translation startup DeepL nabs $300M on a $2B valuation to focus on B2B growth

translation cruise in french

More funding is being poured into startups focused on AI. DeepL , which builds automated text translation and writing tools that compete against the likes of Google Translate and Grammarly, said on Wednesday that it has raised an additional $300 million. It is now valued at $2 billion, post-money.

This round, led by Index Ventures, underscores the frenetic interest that investors have in AI startups at the moment and how companies are capitalizing on that opportunity while they can. DeepL, which is still not profitable, was valued at $1 billion in January 2023 , when it raised just over $100 million.

The new money will be used to drive more sales and marketing, as well as further research and development.

The company, based in Cologne, Germany, said it has more than 100,000 businesses and organizations using its tools. Given that this is just a tiny percentage of the company’s addressable market, the aim is to try to scale that significantly.

CEO and founder Jarek Kutylowski told TechCrunch in an interview earlier this month that the company has largely grown organically so far, and it was looking to ramp up sales and marketing efforts to add more customers and expand what it does with those it already has.

That highlights a key issue for AI companies targeting other businesses: Although many executives are pressing their teams to come up with strategies for how AI can be used in their organizations, many projects have failed to progress beyond the pilot or small deployment phase. Ramping that up will be of prime importance to AI tech vendors.

“Inbound is great, but we want to develop a stronger relationship with our customers,” he said. “We’re working hard on developing a better outbound function, because inbound is only going to get you so far. At some point, you have to start solving the problems together with your customers. The company’s transforming quite a bit into this enterprise direction, which is complicated and interesting for a research based company.”

Kutylowski said that about 60% of the company’s staff are technologists at the moment, and it will be hiring more non-technical personnel going forward. Indeed, balancing that with a focus on research will be one of DeepL’s big challenges.

The startup supports 32 different languages at the moment, and it has been expanding its product portfolio steadily. The latest addition to the list is one very much focused on enterprises: DeepL Write Pro is described as “a writing assistant specifically tailored for business.” Customers signing up for DeepL’s tools include Zendesk, Nikkei, Coursera and Deutsche Bahn, it said.

“Companies want to have control over how their employees speak, right?” Kutylowski said.

However, DeepL faces potentially strong competition from a wide swath of companies: Some specialize in the same area, and platform companies like Google, Amazon and Microsoft already have operations in areas like translation and are looking to enhance them further with AI.

Some of the newer, foundational AI companies like OpenAI or Anthropic have not made headway into the same space as DeepL yet, but there is an obvious opportunity for them, too. Some of these companies might not be focusing on translation and writing improvements right now, but making AI feel more seamless and “human” will continue to be a priority, so DeepL cannot rest on what it claims to be its leading position today.

ICONIQ Growth, Teachers’ Venture Growth, and previous backers IVP, Atomico and WiL also participated in the round.

“DeepL’s runaway success is a bit of an ‘open secret’ in the business community,” said Danny Rimer of Index Ventures in a statement. “The company is exceptionally thoughtful about creating cutting-edge AI products that deliver real and immediate value to their customers.”

French Open: Swiatek, Paolini cruise into women’s final

Top-seeded iga swiatek dismisses third-seeded coco gauff, 6-2, 6-4, then no. 12 jasmine paolini ends unseeded mirra andreeva's run with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

translation cruise in french

PARIS — Iga Swiatek is as good as it gets in tennis at the moment, especially at the French Open. Been that way for quite some time. So her unyielding success against Coco Gauff just about everywhere – and certainly at Roland Garros – should come as no surprise by now.

Swiatek continued her mastery over Gauff and extended her winning streak in Paris to 20 matches with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the semifinals on Thursday.

“For sure, it was intense,” said the top-ranked Swiatek, who claimed five of the last six games after trailing 3-1 in the second set. “I’m happy that I just was consistent with my tactics and didn’t overthink stuff and just went for it at the end.”

In Saturday’s title match, Swiatek will face No. 12 Jasmine Paolini of Italy, a 6-3, 6-1 winner against unseeded 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva of Russia in the second semifinal.

Swiatek, who turned 23 last week, is trying to earn her fourth championship in five years at the French Open and can become the first woman with three in a row since Justine Henin from 2005-07. For Paolini, this will be her first Grand Slam final; she never even had made it past the second round in any of her initial 16 appearances at majors until getting to the fourth round at the Australian Open in January.

Swiatek improved to 11-1 overall against No. 3 seed Gauff, the reigning U.S. Open champion. That is more victories than Swiatek has accumulated against any other player – and includes head-to-head wins at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament three years in a row, including in the 2022 final and last year’s quarterfinals.

“She’s a tough matchup for me, obviously,” Gauff said.

Swiatek, who is 4-0 in major finals, has been at her dominant best for most of the past month, following up on titles at clay events in Rome and Madrid.

Putting aside a three-set, second-round victory over four-time major champion Naomi Osaka, when she was forced to save a match point, Swiatek has ceded a total of merely 17 games in her other five matches in Paris.

Displaying her usual brand of powerful-but-clean groundstrokes, Swiatek needed only 10 winners to advance on Thursday, because she made only 14 unforced errors – while Gauff finished with 39.

“For the most part, I do think I had the right idea,” Gauff said, “but I think I just made too many errors.”

This is what Swiatek does to whoever is across the net, particularly on clay: With defense and precision, she makes them hit so many shots that eventually the mistakes are bound to come.

There was a similar dynamic in the other semifinal. The key statistics were these: Paolini saved all six break points she faced, and she made just 10 unforced errors to Andreeva’s 29.

Now Paolini goes from taking on a teen appearing in her fifth major tournament to someone seeking her fifth major title.

“I have huge respect for (Swiatek), but … my goal is to step on court Saturday and try to enjoy the match and to enjoy that moment,” Paolini said, “and to try to play a good match and to make a good performance on court.”

It did not take long for Swiatek to assert herself on a sunny afternoon in Court Philippe Chatrier, where several spectators waved red-and-white flags of her native Poland – even drawing an admonition from chair umpire Aurélie Tourte in the second set.

When Gauff missed the mark early, she really missed. One return went off her racket frame. Another flew 10 feet long. The opening game ended when Gauff wildly hit a swinging volley that landed way out, too, handing over a break.

Swiatek went up 4-1 when Gauff netted a backhand, then slapped her thigh and smacked her racket against a bag on her sideline bench. There were other examples of negative body language: a bowed head here, slumped shoulders there.

Early in the second set, Gauff got into a disagreement with Tourte. A serve by Swiatek was called out just as Gauff was missing her attempted return. Tourte awarded the point to Swiatek, saying the line judge’s call did not affect Gauff’s swing; Gauff argued that it did.

“It’s a Grand Slam semifinal. Know the rules of the game,” Gauff told the official.

The 20-year-old American wound up breaking there with a forehand winner for a 3-1 lead and wagged her fingers to request louder support from the fans.

Might the momentum be shifting?

Swiatek immediately responded with a four-game run and eventually completed the job on her fourth match point when Gauff missed a forehand, eliciting chants of “Iga! Iga!” from the stands.

MIXED DOUBLES FINAL

Laura Siegemund and Edouard Roger-Vasselin won the French Open mixed doubles title by beating Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski, 6-4, 7-5.

This is the first tournament Siegemund and Roger-Vasselin played together. Siegemund, a 36-year-old from Germany, previously won the U.S. Open mixed doubles with a different partner in 2016 and women’s doubles in 2020.

For the 40-year-old Roger-Vasselin of France, this is his first mixed doubles trophy. His only other major title came in the French Open men’s doubles in 2014.

Krawczyk, an American, and Skupski of Britain won two Wimbledon titles together in 2021 and 2022.

The men’s doubles final is set for Saturday and the women’s doubles final is scheduled for Sunday.

2024 French Open women's semifinal results, score: Iga Swiatek cruises past Coco Gauff to third straight final

The native of poland has looked unbeatable on clay and continues to dominate her american counterpart.

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is one step closer to completing a three-peat at the French Open after a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Coco Gauff during Thursday's semifinal round. Swiatek is now 11-1 in their all-time series.

Swiatek has won 18 consecutive clay matches, as well as 20 straight at the French Open, with her last loss being in the 2021 quarterfinals.

"I think my persistency and the way I stuck to my tactics," Swiatek said during her broadcast courtside interview. "...In the end it wasn't easy to finish. I'm happy I served well in the last game. I can gain some more confident because of that."

Swiatek was able to break Gauff twice in the first set, but the American star showed mental maturity and stayed focused to make it more competitive. Gauff, who has reached a career-high World No. 2 ranking, was aggressive during the match and used her speed as an advantage. However, too many unforced errors and some struggles with her forehand proved costly for her.

Gauff was able to find a 3-1 lead in the second set despite an emotional moment after a disagreement with the chair umpire over a call. But just when she was picking up momentum, Swiatek reminded the Roland Garros crowd why she is the World No. 1 and climbed her way back up to get the job done in straight sets.

Gauff did not go down without a fight, as Swiatek had the advantage when she was up 5-3 but the 20-year-old managed to hold serve and force Swiatek to serve out the match.

"I honestly try to forget about the score and just continued playing the game that I was playing that got me here," Swiatek said. "Yeah I was a break up, but I didn't feel the match was over because Coco was fighting till the end.'

Swiatek will take on the winner of the match between No. 12 seed Jasmine Paolini. Both are making their Grand Slam semifinal debut.

No. 12 Jasmine Paolini takes a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mirra Andreeva

Paolini's breakout season continues as she advances to her first ever Grand Slam final. She will be cracking the WTA top 10 for the first time in her career next week. Paolini just became the first Italian woman at the final of the French Open since Sara Errani in 2012. Errani is also her doubles partner and they will be competing during Friday's semifinal.

At only 17 years old, Andreeva has already showing a lot of potential and has a bright future ahead of her. However, she only got 11 winners while registering 29 unforced errors against Paolini.

No. 1 Iga Świątek wins 6-2, 6-4 against No. 3 Coco Gauff

Świątek is advancing to the 2024 French Open final and needs just one more win to complete her three-peat. She has now won 20 straight matches at Roland Garros since losing in the 2021 quarterfinals.

After Gauff's 3-1 lead in the second set, Swiatek stopped that momentum and climbed her way back up. She had the advantage when she was up 5-3, but Gauff pushed back and got one more game before Swiatek walked away with the straight-sets victory.

Next up, Swiatek will take on the winner of the match between No. 12 seed Jasmine Paolini.

Gauff's lead in the second set was short-lived as Swiatek is now up 4-3. The Polish star is just two games away from another final at Roland Garros, but if Gauff remains focused she still has a chance to push for a third set.

Gauff is not backing down and takes a 3-1 lead in the second set. She was visibly upset after a Swiatek ball was called out before she finished her swing. Gauff disagreed with the call and unsuccessfully talked to the chair umpire.

"He called it before I hit it," Gauff said. "The fans are booing because they know you're wrong. I have to right to finish my swing."

However, she used that emotion to continue a potential comeback against Swiatek.

Gauff is showing mental strength and remained focused to take a 2-1 lead in the second set despite a total of 25 unforced errors so far.
