Weather and Ocean Conditions in Hawaii by Season

Winter (december to february) – whale watching season.

The winter months in Hawaii bring cooler temperatures, more rain, and higher surf. However, this is an amazing time for whale watching, as thousands of humpback whales migrate to Hawaii’s warm waters to mate and give birth.

From December through March, there are numerous whale watching tours available to see these gentle giants up close.

Ocean conditions can be a bit rougher in Hawaii during the winter, so be prepared for higher winds and waves if planning a cruise. However, temperatures typically remain very comfortable, ranging from the mid 60s to high 70s Fahrenheit.

Spring (March to May) – Comfortable Temperatures

As spring arrives, the rain starts to subside and temperatures become nearly perfect in Hawaii, ranging from the low 70s to mid 80s Fahrenheit. The ocean calms as well, making for excellent beach weather and water activities.

Spring is one of the best times to visit Hawaii as crowds have not yet reached their summer peak. Flower blooms decorate the islands in March and April, adding vibrant color. March through May offers idyllic weather to enjoy a relaxing cruise around the islands.

Summer (June to August) – Warmer Temperatures

Summer brings hot and sunny weather to Hawaii, with very little rain. Temperatures climb to the mid 80s to around 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the day. The ocean waters reach their warmest temperatures of the year in August, averaging 79-81°F across the islands.

Hawaii’s summer is excellent for water adventures like snorkeling, surfing, paddle boarding and sailing. This is the busiest tourist season though, so expect some larger crowds. Plan port excursions in advance if taking a cruise around Hawaii in summer.

Fall (September to November) – Lower Prices and Smaller Crowds

The Best Month to Visit Hawaii

September is the best month to visit Hawaii . October is a close second for the best time to visit Hawaii.

In September, you will find the best weather, the fewest people on the islands, the best prices for lodging, and the best ocean conditions for swimming and snorkeling. Plus, the vibe is more laid back after the summer busy season. For all those reasons, it is the best time to visit Hawaii.

October is also a great month to visit but we have found the ocean conditions are not as favorable for snorkeling, swimming, and boat trips. October can experience large swells making ocean conditions dangerous, compared to September. This isn’t every day, but a higher probability of occurring compared to September.

While September is our favorite month to visit, we really think that any of the shoulder months are excellent for visiting. These months are:

• April : after any spring break crowds have left
• May : before Memorial Day
• September : after Labor day
• October : pretty much anytime!
• November : earlier in the month before the Thanksgiving rush arrives

When is the Best Time to Visit Hawaii?

We’ve already established that overall, the best times to visit Hawaii are the shoulder seasons of September through November (before Thanksgiving) and April/May . But what if you’re looking for the best time to visit Hawaii based on specific criteria? We have you covered.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii for the Weather

Hawaii has two seasons compared to four on the mainland of the USA. For most of Hawaii, there is summer between May and October and winter between November and April.

Hawaii is in the tropics, where the length of day and temperature are relatively uniform throughout the year.

While we did say that the temperatures are warm year-round, Hawaii does still get rain. And while you are heading to a beach destination, you probably want to minimize your chances of rain. 

As you can see from the chart below, Hawaii experiences peak rain from November through March. Though to be fair, rain varies on different sides of each island — we are showing average rainfall for one popular visitor destination on each island.

Therefore, to avoid the rain and cloudy days the best time to skip Hawaii’s rainy season visit Hawaii is during Hawaii’s summer or dry season.

The rains are warm in Hawaii and don’t last long. It may rain in the morning and then clear up for a beach day. All-day rains are rare, even during the winter. Plus, rain brings rainbows! We think you should still keep Hawaii in November in the running if you’re still not sure.

The popular places to stay on each of the major Hawaiian Islands are located on the leeward sides. The leeward side of the island gets less rain and has more sunny days compared to the windward side. The leeward side gets most of its rain during a few winter storms.

The coldest temperatures in Hawaii are from January through March where the average low temperature is the high 60s to low 70s. 

The summers can get too hot for some, especially along the ocean on the leeward sides of the islands. Lahaina translates to “cruel sun” in Hawaiian due to the hot and dry weather. But, it is rare to get temperatures in the 90s even during the summer. 

If you’re looking for warm temperatures but not too hot, the shoulder seasons are the best time to visit Hawaii. We prefer September for the best weather in Hawaii as the hot days are waning and the rainy season hasn’t started yet. September is the end of Hawaii’s summer.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii to Avoid Hurricane Season

Hawaii  hurricane season runs June 1 – November 30th . While hurricanes don’t occur or cause damage or destruction every year, it’s something to be aware of as you book your trip. Hurricanes causing destruction in Hawaii are rare. The last three hurricanes that caused damage on Hawaii are Hurricane Lane (2018), Hurricane Iniki (1992), and Hurricane Iwa (1982). The majority of the  damage from Hurricane Inkiki was on Kauai.  

Even if a hurricane doesn’t cause destruction or harsh weather (many of them veer off the path of Hawaii), it can still be disruptive to your vacation. When you get a hurricane warning while on your trip, you can expect to have things disrupted for a few days until the threat passes. For example, if you have a boat trip planned, it will likely be canceled as they wait for storm warnings to pass. 

The Best Time to Go Swimming in Hawaii

The ocean temperature around Hawaii varies from 71 degrees in the winter to 80 degrees during the summer. You can go swimming year-round in Hawaii without a wet suite. 

While the ocean stays warm year-round in Hawaii, the ocean conditions change a lot from the summer to the winter. The best time to go swimming in Hawaii is in the summer as you will have a higher probability of calm conditions on the north and south shores of the islands.

Large waves and strong currents are caused by storms thousands of miles away in the Pacific.

During the winter, storms from Alaska create large waves (and big wave surfing) on the north shores of the Hawaiian Islands. Storms from the southern hemisphere are blocked by other islands but you can still experience large swells during the summer on south shores of the Hawaiian Islands. 

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii for The Fewest Crowds

If you’re worried about the islands being to busy during your vacation, pick a month when the daily visitor census is low. 

January, February, September, and October have the fewest people on the Hawaiian Islands. To avoid the crowds, these months are the best time to visit Hawaii.

September and October are the least crowded as visitor counts drop to the islands after Labor Day. 

While the pandemic and fires have caused visitor counts to vary dramatically from previous years, the trends in the ebb and flow of visitors remained the same. September and October consistently bring the least number of people to Hawaii. When we lived on Maui, those months were a nice break from the summer crowds.

In the 2023 visitor count by Hawaiian Island graph below, you can see that Oahu receives far more visitors than the other islands. If you’re looking to beat the crowds, head to Kauai or the Big Island. 

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii for the Cheapest Costs

Lodging will be your biggest expense when you visit Hawaii. Hotel and vacation rental rates vary by supply and demand. Hence, the busy periods of the summer and winter experience a surge in average daily rates. 

The lowest hotel rates were in September in 2019. From 2021-2023, hotel rates also experienced a dip compared to the summer and winter months. FYI, Oahu is the cheapest Hawaiian Island to visit thanks to hotel prices.

Vacation rental daily rates are also low in the fall. The lowest rates for vacation rentals are found in September, October, and early November (prior to Thanksgiving). October had the lowest vacation rental rates in 2019 and 2021-2023. 

Car rental rates track with lodging rates as they base the price on the amount of demand. Hence, you will find the lowest car rental rates in September and October.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii for Whale Watching

If you’re hoping to get a glimpse of the majestic humpback whales that migrate to Hawaii each year, plan your trip sometime between December and the end of March . While you can start spotting whales as early as October or as late as May, the peak whale watching season is during those four months.

If you want to get really specific, the peak months for whale watching are mid-January through March. This is when you’ll find official whale counts happening. And if you’re trying to figure out what island is the best for whale watching, that would be Maui !

To give you an example, the data from the whale counts on February 24, 2024 is below. These are the total number of whale sightings on each island for that day:

• Maui: 948 whales
• Oahu: 363 whales
• Kauai: 239 whales
• Hawai’i (Big Island): 466 whales

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii by Island

The best time to visit oahu.

Oahu is the most popular island to visit — it receives over 50% of the total visitors to Hawaii! And for good reason — Honolulu is a vibrant city, there are so many cultural and historic sights, and it is the cheapest Hawaiian island to visit . You’ll save big on a hotel room to Oahu, even during the peak summer travel season:

• Kauai: $458

Oahu is great to visit year round, but since it does get so busy, we really like to avoid the summer months. The main area of Waikiki is on the leeward side of the island, so it receives relatively little rain year round. And if you head out to Ko Olina, you’ll be met with sunny skies practically year round.

One thing to note is that you won’t want to visit the North Shore of Oahu during the winter months is you’re hoping for ocean conditions you can swim in. The North Shore of Oahu is home to big wave surfing competitions like the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. During those winter months the Pacific Ocean shows you just how powerful it is. While you won’t get in the water, it’s amazing to watch the big wave surfers.

The best time to visit Maui

The best time to visit Maui again is during the shoulder months of April, May, September, and October. Unless you’re coming for whale season, because Maui is the best island for whale watching!

In the summer Maui can get hot, especially the leeward side of the island, where you will likely be staying (Ka’anapali/Napili/Kapalua or Wailea and Kihei). Things in the summer can get jam-packed, especially on the Road to Hana. And prices surge over the summer, especially for accommodations. The average daily rate for a hotel room on Maui was $656 in July of 2023 , compared with $609 in April 2023.

If you are looking to make a trip during whale season, the best time to visit is after the new year crowds go home. Maui is extremely busy the week before Christmas through New Years, so plan your trip for mid-January to head out on your whale watching tour.

The best time to visit Kauai

Kauai is called the Garden Isle thanks to its lush landscape. The northernmost island is stunning, but rain is a requirement to keep the island so beautiful. Kauai gets a bit more of the extreme weather during winter in Hawaii, which means you should expect a little rain for at least part of your trip.

The best time to visit Kauai is May, August, September, and the beginning of October, when skies are usually blue and the ocean swells aren’t as big as during the summer months. We love spending the summer months up on the North Shore of Kauai, in Hanalei. (Check out some of the best things to do in Hanalei ).

And if you’re hoping to visit the Napali coast, summer is the best time to do so. While the ocean always seems to be a little bit rough on that side, it is significantly calmer during the summer months. And if you are staying on the north shore, there are boats that leave directly from there, making the trip out shorter! The best time to visit the Big Island

The Big Island is unique in that it sees its biggest surge in visitors over Christmas and New Years, so if you can, that’s the time to avoid that island. But we love going pretty much any other month of the year. The best time to visit the Big Island again is during those shoulder months of April, May, September, and October. You likely won’t see big swells on the Kohala coast during those months, which means some of the best beaches on the Big Island are easily accessible.

If you’re headed out to the Big Island to go Manta Ray night snorkeling, you’re in luck.

Unlike whale watching, you can go manta ray night snorkeling any time of year. There is no “season” as far as seeing these beautiful creatures — they live in Hawaii year round. 

That said, during the winter months the ocean conditions can be rougher so you’ll see a higher number of tours cancelled thanks to dangerous conditions. If you’re planning to visit during the winter months and you want to go manta ray night snorkeling, be sure to book your trip at the beginning of your visit so you can reschedule if it gets cancelled due to bad weather or bad ocean conditions.

The Worst Times to Visit Hawaii

While you can figure out the best time to visit Hawaii using the charts above, you can also deduce the worst times to visit Hawaii.

The busy times to visit Hawaii are the winter and summer. The winter brings snowbirds who wish to escape the cold. Many annual travelers to Hawaii stay in timeshares or vacation rentals. Hence, vacation rental prices are higher than average during the winter. 

The summer is the peak season with school being out and summer vacations. Hawaii hit a million monthly visitors in July 2019. Post-pandemic, the numbers are returning as July 2023 experienced 932,713 visitors. 

Hotel rates skyrocketed compared to previous years ( why are Hawaii hotels so expensive (plus clever ways to save) ) in 2023.

The Christmas season is another expensive time to visit due to the popularity of the islands for the holidays. While we say it is the worst time to visit Hawaii , Christmas is a special time on the islands. In fact, the holidays are our favorite season on the islands.

If you still aren’t quite sure when you want to visit Hawaii, we have a few things that are happening on the islands each month to help you decide.

Things to do in January

In January you have some big swells on the north of the islands, so visit the north shore of any island to watch big wave surfers show off their skills (just don’t try it yourself!). You can also celebrate Chinese New Year in Honolulu’s Chinatown, watch the PGA tour in Kapalua on Maui, and go whale watching on any island. Things to do in February

In February, things are still all about the whales. Head to the Maui whale watching festival or head on a tour. Watch free, multicultural performing arts and participate in hands-on demonstrations at the Waimea Cherry Festival. Listen to spectacular performers and participate in educational programs at the  Honolulu Festival  in early March. Things to do in June

There are a number of celebrations on each island to celebrate King Kamehameha, the father of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Celebrate King Kamehameha Day with the floral parade that starts at ‘Iolani Palace in downtown Honolulu. The other islands (Maui, Kauai, Big Island, and Molokai) all have floral parades as well. Things to do in October

One of the most affordable months to visit Hawaii, there is still plenty to do in October. Visit the Hawaii Food and Wine festival or the Honolulu on tap beer festival. Things to do in November

Palm trees, coconuts, pineapples, and tropical sunsets. Have you been dreaming of a Hawaiian cruise? Hawaii is one of those bucket-list destinations that people save and plan to visit for years. All too often, people book the cruise of a lifetime without considering some extremely important items that can make or break their level of satisfaction with the cruise. These decisions are as important, if not more important, than which cruise line you book with.

I’ve visited Hawaii and I’ve done a fair amount of cruising. I’ve also talked with dozens of people who have booked that bucket-list trip and been disappointed because they hadn’t considered what a cruise to Hawaii would entail. They only thought about hula dancers, beaches, tropical drinks, and all the fun they would have. Every cruise to Hawaii includes all of these, but there are many things that make cruising to the islands of Hawaii successful.

While the Hawaiian Islands are beautiful and a place that I feel every traveler should visit at least once in their life, cruising to Hawaii is not always the best solution. Let’s find out if it is the right choice for you.

Before you book your cruise to Hawaii there are some things you need to consider and some options that might better serve your needs.

A Guide to Hawaii Cruises -11 Things To Consider

1. is this your first cruise.

If this will be your first cruise, then select another cruise. Not that you will not love Hawaii, but a 12- or 15-day cruise is not the best choice for someone who has never cruised before. Select a five- or seven-day cruise and see if you enjoy it before taking a longer cruise. When you cruise to Hawaii, it includes five or six days in a row at sea, and it can be more than some people can handle, especially when it’s a first cruise. Who knows if you will get sea sick or go stir crazy when all you see is the ocean for several days?

I have a relative who booked a cruise to Hawaii to celebrate their retirement. They had never cruised and thought they would love to see Hawaii that way. Once they arrived in Hawaii they enjoyed seeing the islands, but they hated being at sea. They felt they were never going to see land again, they were claustrophobic, and it basically turned them against cruising. I would hate for that to happen to you. So take my advice and if it is your first cruise, don’t plan to go to Hawaii.

Another option is to fly to Hawaii and board a ship there. Cruise to the various islands over a week, and then fly home.

If the answer is no, it is not your first cruise, and you have enjoyed other shorter cruises , then a Hawaiian cruise might be perfect for you. But before you book, consider the following questions as well.

2. Do You Have Significant Time Off?

If you answered yes, then a Hawaiian cruise might be the ideal cruise for you. You will need to plan to be away for at least 12 to 13 days if you are cruising one way then visiting the islands and flying home. If it is a round-trip cruise, then you need to plan for at least 15 to 20 days depending on the itinerary. A Hawaiian cruise is a good choice for older people who are retired.

If you aren’t fortunate enough to have extended time off, you can fly to and from Hawaii and take a seven-day cruise around the islands. Be aware these are long flights and you would still need at least nine days away from your job to make the trip happen.

If you can’t get nine days away, your best option is to select another destination. Wait till you have more time to enjoy a Hawaiian cruise.

3. Do You Get Seasick?

If you suffer from sea sickness , five or six days at sea to Hawaii will more or less ruin your vacation. Your best bet if you still wish to cruise is to fly to Hawaii and then cruise around the islands. Most of the cruising will be at night and you will be off the ship during the day. Once your cruise is complete, you would fly back to the states.

If you don’t suffer from seasickness, then you should be good to cruise to Hawaii if all the other factors line up! But there are some tips to stay healthy on a cruise that I shared.

4. Do You Enjoy Sea Days?

If the answer is yes, then leaving the West Coast for a cruise to Hawaii might be the perfect vacation for you. You will have at least five or six days at sea. Not everyone can handle seeing nothing but water for five days. But if that sounds heavenly to you, then go for it. These consecutive sea days give you plenty of time to participate in all the fun ship activities, visit the spa, relax, visit the art gallery, play some bingo, shop the ship’s stores, and read a good book.

If it is a round-trip cruise, you will have 10 or 12 days at sea. That is a lot of sea days. If you enjoy them, then you will love a round-trip Hawaiian cruise.

If you answered no, then skip cruising to Hawaii. You still have the option of flying there, cruising around the islands, and flying home. Everyone that I talked to who didn’t enjoy a Hawaiian cruise listed the number of sea days as being the worst part of the experience.

5. Do You Enjoy Long Flights?

If you are good with long flights, then you can fly to and from Hawaii and board a ship there to cruise from island to island. This usually entails a seven- or nine-day cruise. You get to spend a day or two at each island and then fly back home.

You also have the opportunity to cruise one way and fly the other, which might be a good option. These cruises are usually 10 to 12 days.

Many people who do this choose to fly over and then spend a few days touring Honolulu and then board the ship to visit all the other islands. Or they do their touring after the cruise and before flying home. This is a great option if your schedule is flexible and you can take the time to spend a few extra days.

If you hate long flights, your choices are to cruise one or both ways or opt for cruising to a different location.

6. Do You Want To Spend Multiple Days On Each Island?

Spending multiple days on each island is more conducive to a land vacation that includes airfare from island to island. Usually on a cruise ship, you have just one day at each location, and, at the most, two days in prime locations. This is long enough to see highlights or focus on one specific area or tour, but not long enough to see everything you might want to experience if you have a lot of Hawaiian spots in mind.

If you are good with a single day on each island and seeing one main attraction , then a cruise would be a perfect option for you. Many people have visited the islands multiple times and do not feel the need to spend a lot of time on each.

7. Do You Want To Visit The Majority Of The Islands?

A Hawaiian cruise is a wonderful option if you desire to visit most of the islands. You can cruise from island to island and get a feel for each. You travel between islands while you are sleeping, so there’s no wasted time. Cruising all the islands is great for learning which island you want to return to and visit for a longer period of time — or just for seeing as much as possible during your bucket-list vacation.

If you only want to visit one island and enjoy everything there, then cruising is not a good option for you. Flying to the island you desire to see and enjoying a land vacation would be a better option.

8. Do You Enjoy Packing And Unpacking?

Plane hopping from island to island might be enjoyable for you if you don’t mind packing and unpacking every day or so. I’ve done this on a 14-day trip. We had seven days in Honolulu and then divided seven days between the other islands with two or three days on each. While it was a fantastic trip and I enjoyed every minute, a great deal of our time in the second week was spent packing up, going to the airport, flying to the next island, and then unpacking and settling into our new hotel. Doing that three times within a week eats up a great deal of your time.

Cruising around the islands is a great option if you want to unpack just once. You move from island to island at night and then you have all day to enjoy the sites at each island without packing and unpacking. You can enjoy this on all the Hawaiian cruise options we’ve covered.

9. Are You Comfortable On Small Planes?

Island hopping by plane might be a perfect solution if you are comfortable on small aircrafts.

Cruising will be a better option if you want to see multiple islands but don’t like small planes. You cruise from island to island at night and enjoy each of them during the day. By cruising, you avoid the small aircrafts.

Once you have considered these questions and are sure that you want to cruise to Hawaii, then you can consider how many days you wish to be gone and make an educated choice about which option is best for your personal needs.

10. Are You Considering Winter Months For a Hawaii Cruise?

The winter months are the most popular time to visit Hawaii and similar South Pacific destinations because people have time off work and the school’s out. This is the best time of the year for whale watching, and you can find really good deals.

The only major cruise line that offers Hawaii cruises in the summer is the Norwegian Cruise Line . Late spring Hawaii sailings tend to offer great weather and less crowded cruise ships since kids are in school. 

11. What Type of Hawaii Cruise Would You Like?

When's Best to Visit Hawaii TL;DR

Generally, the best time to visit Hawaii  for the most ideal  overall weather , lowest statewide rates , and the  fewest visitors on-island  is April and May during the spring and  September and October during the fall. Some refer to these times as Hawaii's 'off-season period' or 'shoulder months.'   In the summer, it will certainly be more crowded, so early June is best, and during the winter, though typically wetter, we recommend  January , especially if you want to see the humpback whales .

Ultimately, in our honest opinion - there isn't an inopportune time to go to Hawaii. Visiting Hawaii is a dream come true for many visitors, and who can blame them? The weather is fantastic nearly year-round, there's something to do for everyone , and the food is  phenomenal (try laulau , and malasadas , trust us!).

Below we'll cover more details about what makes this a great time, or not, to visit the Aloha State .

Totals by Island - 2022 vs 2023

Above, we've included an updated graphic comparing visitor arrivals to each major Hawaiian island for both 2022 and 2023. This bar chart provides a more accurate year-over-year comparison by aligning the time frames for both years. The impact of the wildfires on Maui is quite obvious in this chart. What we can say for certain is that  demand has softened for mid to late 2024 , and the summer 2024 travel season has seen fewer forward bookings than usual. Some experts predict this pattern to continue, especially on Maui for the foreseeable future.

What to Expect in 2024 through early 2025

Prices that have risen over the last two years will likely continue to  impact flight costs, hotel & accommodation rates, the costs associated with rental vehicles (Turo or standard rental agency), and other rates/fees due to increases in local electricity costs (Hawaii still generates a significant amount of its electricity from petroleum fuels). As of mid-2024, Hawaii government leaders continue to debate additionally introducing a visitor or climate-impact fee that ranges from $25-$50 per traveler, but this has not been finalized yet. Increases to the accommodation tax, already the highest in the nation at up to 18%, are also not out of the question. There are also ongoing discussions about eliminating some or all vacation rental properties, at each respective island official's discretion, like those found on VRBO or AirB&B. Maui is particularly vulnerable to these changes. We're following these topics closely and will keep this page updated accordingly.

The devastating wildfires that affected West Maui in August 2023 are also continuing to impact Maui's economy at this time, and this will mean price swings, flight demand issues at times, and other factors to consider for those looking to visit the Valley Isle in the coming months. Lahaina remains closed and we urge all potential Maui visitors to be especially mindful and respectful in the islands as the community continues through this tragedy.

As is to be expected, when more people are 'on-island' visiting the Hawaiian Islands - accommodation, rental, and flight costs will increase as well. To avoid the crowds and keep rates lower, you can always try visiting during non-peak visitation periods (i.e.; holidays and summer months are high-demand time periods). When preparing for your trip, the following graphic should help provide a general idea of the average rates during different times of the year. These rates fluctuate by island, but these figures still allow you to prepare accordingly.

The rates on the charts seen here are from a couple of years ago and will be updated once things settle from the pandemic, but generally should provide a good overview of pricing during various times of the year. Generally, Oahu accommodation prices have remained relatively consistent with pre-pandemic rates heading into the summer/fall of 2024, but the outer-islands continue to see rate increases of 20-60% over pre-pandemic prices.

'Best Time to/for...' Hawaii FAQ

Seasonal events, when to book, finding the best rates, & more..., best time for good weather.

While Hawaii is a great destination year-round, the best opportunity for good weather exists during April, May, September, and October. As the tradewinds pick up over the winter months, so do the showers, and surf swells, particularly on the north/northeast (windward) shores of each island. The weather is warm year-round, with average highs in the winter of 78-82ºF (26-28ºC) and 83-88ºF (29-31ºC) in the summer months. Learn more about Hawaii weather .

Best Time to avoid crowds?

Hawaii has visitors during all months of the year, but typically, if you want to avoid the crowds , visit in either November (excluding Thanksgiving) or May for the quietest scene on the islands. Additionally, the first week of June, most of April (excluding ‘Golden Week’ and Easter), and much of September or October are great times to avoid the majority of visitors. Best Time to Book Hawaii Hotels?

As a rule of thumb, book early - no later than 2-3 months before you go! It's not uncommon for the Best Accommodations in Hawaii to get booked quickly, especially during the summer months over holidays. If you are planning to visit in either July or August and especially if you’re planning a visit around the Christmas/New Year’s holiday in late December, then we’d advise booking 4-6 months in advance to ensure you can reserve the room(s) you want. Best Time to purchase Hawaii Airline Tickets?

As with accommodations, it’s best to typically book earlier than later. The best prices for Hawaii flights can vary dramatically throughout the year, depending on a variety of factors. Generally speaking, to find the best rates, we advise visitors to start searching for flights four months before your trip and to book no later than one month before your planned departure. Using this approach should provide you the best opportunity to find a good deal. If you are planning a visit during Thanksgiving, Christmas, or another holiday, we’d advise you book much earlier, as far in advance as possible to ensure the best price for what will undoubtedly be high-demand tickets during those peak periods.

Best Time to Find Deals & Discounts?

If you’re searching for the best rates when visiting Hawaii, we’d advise you to start your search for flights that arrive/depart in the middle of the week. Flying during the middle of the week will save you a lot of money, especially when flying from geographically further away. Generally, the most affordable rates for both flights and hotels in Hawaii will be primarily during the fall and somewhat so during the spring.

For accommodations, the months of September through November (sometimes into early December) offer the best hotel deals , again excluding Thanksgiving. In the spring, the best accommodation rates can be found from late March until early June (excluding the Easter holiday and Japan’s ‘Golden Week,’ in April).

For tours and activities, while many deals and specials will be ‘last-minute’ - the best discounts and specials run during the summer months (late May - July). Best Time for Snorkeling, Swimming, and Diving?

Hawaii offers fantastic snorkeling, diving, and swimming opportunities for much of the year, but the best times are the summer months. During this period the surf will be less intense than during the winter, the water will be warmer, and the weather more cooperative - creating the perfect conditions for exploring in the water around the islands.

In our opinion, Maui snorkeling is the best you'll find in the entire state, followed by snorkeling on the Big Island . Both islands offer great snorkeling locations largely protected from surf and tradewinds on the leeward side of each island.

Best Time to ski or snowboard?

This isn’t a typo; you can ski and snowboard in Hawaii - though conditions will have to be just right. Mauna Kea , on the Big Island, means ‘white mountain’ in Hawaiian and its peaks are frequently found blanketed with a layer of snow. To provide yourself the best opportunity to partake in this winter sport, visit during February or March. Be sure to prepare accordingly, as there are limited facilities and you will need a 4x4 vehicle to reach the summit.

Best Time to take a cruise to/around Hawaii?

The best time to find a good bargain on cruises, including inter-island cruises, will be late November through mid-December. The best time for selection of boats will be in the spring (April/May) and fall (late August-October). Winter months are often more expensive (due to increased visitation), and typically wetter - but do offer the opportunity for whale watching (late November through early April).

Best Time to go Whale Watching?

Each winter, Humpback Whales migrate from Alaska to the warm waters surrounding Hawaii to mate and give birth to their calves. The best opportunities for whale watching will be from late November through mid-April; February and March often provide the best opportunities for sightings.

Best Time to get married/have a destination wedding?

As noted in the weather question, to avoid the wettest weather, try and plan your wedding for the summer months; anytime from late April until late October is usually a pretty safe bet. The middle of the summer will be warmer but is also typically the driest. Hurricane season runs from June through November as well, but storms are historically rare events. Ultimately, all factors considered - the best month for a destination wedding in Hawaii is in May.

Best Time for Hiking?

Hawaii offers some of the best hiking in the world if we may say so ourselves; a hiker could probably traverse Kauai’s trails alone for years and never get bored. As with most things in Hawaii, the hiking is excellent year-round, but the best months for hitting the trails are during the late spring and early fall (April, May, September, and October). The weather will be drier during these months, as well as throughout the entire summer, but unlike the summer, these spring/fall months will also be cooler. Be sure to take plenty of water and sunscreen before you head out, as the UV is very high in Hawaii year-round. If you hike during the winter months, be prepared for showers and trail conditions to potentially be messier / less maintained.

Best Time to visit Kilauea Volcano or go stargazing on Mauna Kea?

The Big Island’s Kilauea volcano has erupted almost continuously since 1983, sometimes more spectacularly than at other times. While there isn’t a ‘best time’ to witness something controlled by geologic forces, especially given the unpredictable nature of the volcano; if you’re planning to hike around the volcano or within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park , we’d advise the same as we did in our hiking question - visit during the spring or fall when it’s not at hot, and the weather will be cooperative. The summer will often be too warm to hike anywhere near the older black lava flows.

On the other hand, if you’re heading to the summit of Mauna Kea for some stargazing, then the summer months are best due to the same warmer temperatures. The peaks of Mauna Kea can become downright frigid at night, especially during the winter months. Remember, a full moon will offer the best opportunities for clear stargazing, and be sure to prepare accordingly before heading to the summit.

Best Time to go Fishing?

Fishing is another activity that can be partaken year-round, as different species of fish will bite at different times of the year and off the coast of each unique island. Summer tends to be one of the most popular periods for fishing - offering marlin (blue and yellowfin), skipjack, and ono. Fall and spring both offer good marlin and mahi-mahi fishing. Winter months are best for catching snapper, skipjack, tuna, and striped marlin. If you're visiting Maui, we recommend Fish Maui .

Best Time to Surf, Bodyboard, or Paddleboard(SUP)?

The best time for water activities like surfing and bodyboarding will be during the winter months. The biggest waves, for professionals, will be on the north shore. For the rest of us non-pros, the south coast is best during the winter. During the summer and fall (May - September), the waves will be calmer on the north shore of each island - so all skill levels can partake.

For other water sports like paddleboarding, we like the spring and fall the best, but this again can be a year-round activity if you select the right location(s) based on the time of year you visit.

Best Time for local festivals and events?

The best time to visit for island festivals and events depends on what you're looking for during your visit. ' Merrie Monarch ,' also known as the Olympics of Hula , is held in Hilo on the Big Island every April. Over on Oahu, you can catch the 'Waikiki Spam Jam,' also usually held in April. The ' Aloha Festivals ' takes place on all the islands each year in late September.

King Kamehameha Day (June 11) and Lei Day (May 1) also both offer various festivities, including impressive lei draping ceremonies of the King Kamehameha Statutes on both the Big Island and Oahu. Check our Hawaii events page for more information on what might be taking place during your visit.

This section will be updated once more information is available and the airline industry has had a chance to return to some sense of normalcy. Currently, rates are still competitive airline to airline and demand fairly strong.

The recently announced (potential) merger between Hawaiian and Alaska airlines will have implications on Hawaii travel; we'll touch more on that as the merger process evolves.

Demand for Maui flights will vary as the island recovers from the devastating wildfires in August 2023.

As a general rule, we continue to advise travelers to book their flights well in advance of their trip.

What to expect - rain & temperatures, hawaii weather summary, high/low temperatures & monthly precipitation.

*Climate Notes: Weather and Climate numbers are aggregated from trusted weather sources providing the monthly temperature and precipitation figures for each island's primary airport. These airports collectively provide a solid statewide estimate of weather conditions, but should not be taken as a "whole-island" forecast. Weather conditions can change dramatically within Hawaii and on each island due to the diverse topography, changes in elevation, the trade winds, and other unique island conditions. Hawaii weather can often be about as sporadic as it gets, and as such, forecasting the weather on Hawaii can be both daunting and confusing to first-time visitors. 

The tropical climate makes you quickly realize, 'this isn't the mainland,' and the environment takes some getting used to.

We encourage all visitors to check out our Hawaii Weather page, but here are a few quick pointers on Hawaii's weather to summarize:

• Read up on the forecasts at the  University of Hawaii Weather  before you visit and during your stay, as they have the best and most accurate estimates on the islands.
• Don't listen to the Weather Channel or watch the NOAA forecast graphs, of course, they'll predict rain - it technically rains almost every day in Hawaii... for about 10 minutes at a time.
• The only time it's really wet in Hawaii for a prolonged time is during the winter months, usually from November until March. But it's not a wash by any means.
• Temperatures at sea level usually run about 76-85 °F (24-29 °C)  all year-round. Temperatures at night are typically 12-18 °F (3-4 °C) cooler, but this can change dramatically depending on your altitude.
• Speaking of altitude, if you're planning to go up to higher elevations on either Maui or the Big Island, bring a small coat and long convertible pants. It can get very cold at the summit of the larger volcanoes!
• Hurricanes in Hawaii are historically rare events, but the last few seasons have seen increased tropical activity, and several tropical storms come close to the islands. If you're visiting during Hawaii Hurricane Season (June 1 - November 30th in the Central Pacific), then we advise you keep an eye on the tropics before your visit. Visitors may want to bookmark the Central Pacific Hurricane Center website for future reference.

 Ultimately, don't fret about the weather, it's Hawaii! Showers are typically short-lived and sporadic, and the temperature is almost always just right.

Things to know for each island.

When planning your trip, there are a few things to keep in mind for each Hawaiian island, in addition to our Hawaii Essential Things to Know . Below we've made note of the most significant events and/or dates that may affect each island during your visit.

Best time to Visit Kauai

The best months to visit Kauai are in April , May , August , September , or October .  The weather on Kauai is consistently warm (highs in the mid-70's to mid-80's °F [24-29 °C]) year-round and visitors will enjoy the driest weather on the south shore and western portions of the island. Annual events include the May Day Festival (May) and Eo E Emalani I Alakai Festival (October) and the Chocolate & Coffee Festival (October).

Best time to Visit Oahu

Oahu is a great island to visit at any time of the year. Still, if you especially want to dodge the crowds (on this most populous Hawaiian Island) - then the best months to visit Oahu are in May or later in the Fall (September and October are both great choices). Both times offer better rates on the island but still have fantastic weather conditions. Also, be sure to note that the last week of April is also 'Golden Week' in Japan - which can generate a large influx of Japanese visitors during that period. Other annual events on Oahu that draw international crowds include the Honolulu Marathon (December) and the Hawaii International Film Festival (October).

Best time to Visit Maui

The best months to visit Maui are in April , May , September , or October . If you’re visiting for whale watching, February is a good choice for peak season activity.  Travelers looking for the best deals on Maui accommodations should also seek out travel periods in the spring and fall, as they will be the cheapest months to visit due to decreased demand. As far as events,   Whale watching increases visitation starting in November and continues until the spring. Weatherwise, Maui temperatures remain consistently warm with daytime highs in the 75-85 °F [24-29 °C] range during the summer and winter, respectively. If you're heading to the summit of Haleakala, be sure to bundle up accordingly as it gets quite cold atop the volcano.

The best months to visit the Big Island are May , August , or September for the best combination of great weather, low rates, and fewer visitors. Weather on the Big Island, like the other islands, stays consistently warm year-round. The main thing to note weather-wise is the differences between the Hilo (wetter and cooler eastern windward side) and Kailua-Kona (drier and warmer western leeward side). Annual events that generate an influx of visitors are the Merrie Monarch Festival (around Easter Sunday) and the Ironman competition (Kona side, typically in October).

Spring in Hawaii

Less rain starts to fall on the islands as the trade winds die down to their summer levels, making this an ideal time to visit. Some call this the start of the "dry" season. The weather is almost always perfect, and, in general, this is the best time to find good bargain  travel activities.  After mid-April (typically after Easter), most airfare and lodging prices drop as a result of the "high-demand" period ending. The last week of April and the first week of May are often a time when most Japanese visitors will arrive due to the "Golden Week" holiday in Japan. Water temperatures measure near the high 70°F (21° C) mark this time of year, and the surf begins to die down as the trade winds let up. The best part of the spring is the fresh flowers, fruit, and vegetation that can be seen around the island. This is our favorite time to visit. We should note that the spring does hold one large event on the Big Island of Hawaii that can cause crowding on the Hilo side of the Island: the Merrie Monarch festival, which is held annually starting on Easter Sunday.

Summer in Hawaii

Typically, the summer months, as a whole, result in less visitor demand. This fact will benefit visitors in the form of lower rates for both accommodations and rental vehicles. Some will label this the "low season," however, this "low season" classification can often be misleading regarding pricing your trip and of what crowd sizes to expect.

Since June through August are very popular with travelers in general, not just to Hawaii, Airline prices will often increase into late May through July, as demand is higher for seats nationwide. Thus, if you are flying from the East Coast or the Midwest, the most expensive flight you pay for might ironically be the continental flight to the West Coast. According to the tourism authority in the islands, July continues to be the  month  with the  most  visitor arrivals. To us, this makes sense because this is when most families visit the island, as their children are out of school. The same is true for local children on the island; this is their summer, and they often frequent the same beaches, trails, and places you'll be visiting, too.

The summer months are always the warmest on the island, and temperatures can reach as high as 90+°F (32+°C) under the right conditions. Combined with the high humidity, the heat can occasionally be unpleasant for some travelers not accustomed to it. Surf is at its lowest during the summer, and the rain clouds are few and far between, except on the windward coast.

Swimming & Hiking Conditions

Water temperatures usually rise above the 80°F (26°C) mark during the Summer months. The tradewinds are also calmer during this time of the year as well, resulting in less surf on the northern shores (e.g., better for snorkeling, swimming, etc.) on each island.

Regarding hiking, in our opinion, the summer months are typically too warm for a lot of outdoor hiking and adventure, especially at locations like the Big Island's black lava fields or any other island's coastal trails (Kalalau on Kauai for example). Lower prices are helpful on the wallet; however, the sun and humidity combination makes going anywhere, but the beach seems like a chore. If you plan to be especially active outdoors, we advise visiting a few months earlier in the spring or a few months later in the fall if you can. 

Tropical Storms in Hawaii

While historically a rare event, the summer months are also hurricane season in Hawaii, and the islands are certainly not immune to a hit. Such was the case with Iniki in September 1992. It came ashore on Kauai as a strong category 3 (borderline category 4) storm. Since then, several additional storms have grazed Hawaii, but none have caused such widespread damage as Iniki. Again, tropical storm systems are historically rare - simply be aware they do occur from time to time. In fact, over the last few years including the Summer of 2018, there have been more tropical systems near and around the islands than normal.

Fall in Hawaii

More rain begins to fall in November as the trade winds increase to their winter levels, and there are days where rain showers will dominate on the windward coast and mauka areas. Occasionally, Kona storms will dump a tremendous amount of rain on the islands and can cause wind damage in several areas. Tropical Storms and/or Hurricanes can also still pose a threat to Hawaii during the fall. However, as a general rule, Kona storms cause more headaches than tropical storms. So what exactly IS a Kona storm? 

Kona Storms in Hawaii

When a Kona storm develops or moves into the area, the prevailing wind pattern changes - south and southwesterly winds replace the trade winds. Since the winds typically affect the Kona coast of the Big Island, the storms have thus taken on that name. Although destructive Kona storms are fairly rare, they occur often enough to warrant a mention here. Kona storms bring high winds, heavy rain, snow atop higher mountains (like Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island), and lightning and thunder can occur (a rarity in Hawaii). Due to extreme terrain differences in the islands, weather conditions can be highly variable across a relatively small area. Gusts of wind up to 60 mph (96km/h) have been known to happen on the Big Island, while other portions of the Hawaiian chain simply deal with increasing breezes. In general, the fall months and the spring months are very similar. Like in the spring, the Big Island of Hawaii can become quite busy during October, as a major event is held on the island. Typically, in October, the Ironman Triathlon event is held on the Kona side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Check online calendars for the exact dates each year. Also note that in the late fall, visitor demand to Hawaii begins to increase in mid-December, which typically causes rates for flights, tours, and accommodations to rise.

Winter in Hawaii 

By the first day of winter, the high demand period in Hawaii around Christmas and New Year's has begun on the islands.

The 'high season/period' term, of course, brings back the debate about defining "low" and "high" season. And although the tourism authority in the islands, using 2018 data, shows the second highest number of visitors arriving in December of each year, it's important to note that most of these visitors are showing up for about a week - Christmas through New Year. This period is always a busy time on the islands and can almost single-handedly make this the "high season" for accommodations. Thus, on average, the prices are higher and occupancy rates are higher.

Bottom-line on pricing:  expect to pay more in winter months. As noted in the introduction, Christmas is a time that anyone who dislikes crowds should avoid coming to the islands.

The high temperature remains a comfortable average of near 78°F (25°C). Water temperatures are often around 74°F (23°C) during this period, and swimming can be rough as a result of the higher surf. If you're coming to Hawaii to see any surfing events, then this is definitely the time to come -, especially on Maui and Oahu. During the winter months, this is one of the only places in the world you can come play in the snow (on the Big Island and occasionally Maui) and swim in the (warm) ocean in the same day. Winter is also the  whale watching  season in Hawaii. Humpback whales travel all the way from Alaska every winter to mate, calve, and birth their young (usually in the shallow waters off the coast of Maui). Unless you are coming specifically for big surf or to see whales, we believe winter is usually the least desirable time to visit the islands. Despite the waterfalls being more active due to the rain, and the potential to see huge surf and the amazing shows put on by whales breaching off the coast, the combination of higher prices, wetter weather, and cooler temperatures has never sat well with us. You can easily visit during the spring or fall for much cheaper prices and better weather.

It depends on whether you prefer warm or slightly warmer. Hawaii boasts balmy temperatures year-round and has only two seasons, winter and summer. Winter is November until April and Summer is May to October. There are minor temperature fluctuations between the two and it rains more in winter.  

In summer, the average temperature during the day is a balmy 85˚ F and in winter, it’s 78˚ F. That said, the conditions vary depending on your elevation and the side of the island you’re on. If it’s raining on one side, it may be sunny on the other. 

Hawaii even has a teensy bit of snow. The white stuff caps  Mauna Kea  and Mauna Loa, the two largest volcanoes in the island chain.

35 Tips For Your Cruise To Hawaii On NCL’s Pride Of America

Aloooooooha! Having just returned from my fourth visit to Hawaii, second cruise to Hawaii, and first cruise to Hawaii aboard the Pride of America (POA), I have compiled my 35 best tips to help you plan for your POA cruise, maximize your time onboard, and fully experience each Hawaiian port. Thirty-five because I just celebrated my 35th birthday (in the spirit of full disclosure, I stopped counting 7 years ago)!

Tips For Before Your Cruise On The Pride Of America

1. understand what makes the pride of america unique.

Sailing on the Pride of America will be an experience nearly as “unique” as sharing a table with Prof. Cruise (that’s me!) in the main dining room: wow, she’s weird (I am) and smells like she forgot deodorant (without fail).

So what makes the Pride of America so weird, I mean, “unique?” As the only American flagged ocean cruise ship, you’ll notice three major differences between the Pride of America and other ships that sail to/from Hawaii. First, the Passenger Vessel Services Act does not apply to American registered ships, so the Pride of America isn’t required to stop at a foreign port. All other cruises to/from Hawaii will call in a foreign port (usually Canada or Mexico), adding on many sea days and at least one non-Hawaiian stop to their itinerary (not a bad thing in my mind, but a significant difference). If you only have one week off work and want to cruise Hawaii or don’t like sea days, the Pride of America is your only option.

Second, because the Pride of America has to abide by all American labor laws, the majority of crew members will be Americans, unlike other cruise ships that employ mostly foreign workers.

And the third difference, directly related to the second, is cost. You’ll likely pay a much higher per night cruise fare on the Pride of America than other ships that sail to/from Hawaii. Pride of America crew members are paid more, enjoy labor protections foreign workers do not, and turnover is higher, leading to increased cruise fares. Our total 7-night fare on the Pride of America was nearly double what we paid for a 15-night sailing on the Grand Princess round-trip to Hawaii from San Fransisco. In fact, it was our most expensive vacation ever (factoring in the expense of getting to and from Honolulu by air).

2. Consider The Implications Of Such A Port Heavy Itinerary

Unlike most cruise itineraries that include a mix of port and sea days, every day on the Pride of America is a port day. The ship even remains docked at port in Maui and Kaua’i overnight and travel between ports mostly takes place after dark. You may have heard the Pride of America described as a “floating hotel” for that reason. Hawaii, not the ship or the sea, will be the main attraction for most.

As such, you won’t do much lounging around the ship in your robe with a cocktail in one hand and a soft serve cone in the other, turning the pages of your book with an elbow.

You also won’t have as much time to enjoy your stateroom, drink and dining packages, the spa, and other ship activities. Take that into consideration when deciding what to book – for example, we opted out of bidding to upgrade to a suite from our balcony cabin knowing we wouldn’t do much more than sleep in it. We elected to stick with a less expensive cabin and spend more on excursions.

3. Price Shop

My regular readers (hi mom and gigi!) may have been surprised to learn that we sprung for a balcony cabin on the Pride of America – we normally book the cheapest cabin category available, allowing us to cruise more often. However, the significant expense involved in getting to and from Honolulu makes booking the Pride of America unique.

At the time we booked, NCL offered free airfare (note that there are significant downsides to booking NCL EZ air, but that’s a topic for another time), gratuities, and transfers for those booked in a balcony category or higher. After pricing out an inside cabin and paying for flights, transportation, and gratuities on our own, it actually ended up being significantly cheaper to book the package, including the balcony cabin, through NCL. It may be for you too – price shop!

4. Book A Port Side Balcony

In the event that you end up booking a balcony cabin, be sure to choose one on the port (left) side of the ship. On the last day of your cruise, you’ll spend the early evening cruising along the spectacular Nāpali coast of Kaua’i. While the captain will turn the ship around so that those on the starboard side can see it too, that will happen well into dinner hours. To see it first and in full sunlight, book port side!

5. Avoid Deck 8 Balcony Cabins

While on many ships, lifeboats are tucked away under balcony cabins, on the Pride of America they jut out from the side of the ship on deck 7 and are visible below most balcony cabins and especially those located directly above them on deck 8. While this isn’t a huge deal and you’ll still be able to enjoy your balcony if you end up booked in one, you will be able to see them as you’re looking down at the water and they will appear in many of the photos taken from your balcony. Book a higher deck if you can or far forward or aft (double check deck plans before you book).

6. Read A Hawaii Travel Book

I checked this highly rated one out from my local library and found it very helpful:

You can also purchase it on Amazon here . It was written by locals and will help you understand the unique history, culture, and topography of Hawaii and maximize your time in each port with suggestions of “can’t miss” attractions that appeal to a wide variety of interests.

7. Learn A Bit Of Hawaiian

While you certainly won’t need them to successfully navigate the islands – nearly everyone speaks English – learning a few words and phrases in Hawaiian will add to your experience and you’ll notice crew members and locals using many of these:

Aloha (pronounced a-lo-ha): hello, goodbye, and love

Mahalo (pronounced mah-hah-loh): thank you

‘A’ ole palikir (pronounced ah-oh-leh pee-lee-kee-yah): you’re welcome or no problem

A hui hou (pronounced ah-hoo-wee-ho-oo-uu): until we meet again

Howzit? (pronounced how-zit): how are you?

Waina (pronounced wy-nah): wine. Don’t confuse this one with the English slang word “wino” which is used in jest to describe my mother-in-law who will be embarking on her own Hawaiian cruise soon. This one’s for you, Gigi!

‘Ono grinds (pronounced oh-no grinds): delicious eats.

8. Pack Wisely

Don’t forget to pack these essentials for your cruise to Hawaii on the Pride of America:

Binoculars: you’ll appreciate having a good pair of binoculars for your shore excursions and for your scenic cruise along the Nāpali coast. I have these and love them – they’re compact and inexpensive. I got them for Alaska, but they worked great in Hawaii too.

A quality camera: gorgeous photo opportunities are everywhere in Hawaii! Invest in a good camera to use in addition to your phone. Here’s a great starter camera for travelers (I have it and love it):

Reef safe sunscreen: be sure your sunscreen is reef safe – it’s the law in Hawaii! Here’s a list of reef safe sunscreens available on Amazon .

Bug repellant: I forgot my bug repellant wipes and returned to Seattle with dozens of itchy bumps to prove it! I prefer the wipes to spray because they’re easy to pack and apply.

Extra outlets: the number of outlets in Pride of America cabins is extremely limited. If you have multiple devises you want to charge at once, consider bringing a cruise approved power strip like this one :

Cheese: I mean, matching Hawaiian outfits ! I promise, no one is laughing behind your back. Yes they are. But who cares, you look adorable!

9. Fly To Honolulu The Day Before

Do as I say, not as I do. My teaching/travel assistant and son, “H,” would point to “don’t eat so much sugar” and “brush your hair” as examples of this for which I am admittedly guilty. “Fly to Honolulu the day before your cruise” would be another. Due to work obligations, we couldn’t fly to Honolulu until the day of sail away and our flights, booked by NCL’s EZ air, didn’t have us arriving into Honolulu until 2:30 in the afternoon.

While I normally love planning a cruise almost as much as the cruise itself, my regular pre-cruise excitement was tainted with worry that we’d miss the boat. If you do elect to fly in the day of, be sure to buy travel insurance that will cover the cost of any possible delays. I always use this site to compare plans and rates. I’d advise against booking insurance through the cruise lines – it will be costlier and may not cover everything you need.

10. Don’t Purchase A Lei At The Airport, You’ll Receive One At The Cruise Terminal

While you might see people wearing beautiful leis at the airport in Honolulu and be tempted to purchase one, hold your horses (or your luggage in this case). You will receive a free fresh flower lei for women (pictured above) or a shell lei for men as you enter the cruise terminal. You’ll also have the opportunity to make additional leis later in the cruise (I’ll get to that shortly).

Pride Of America Ship Tips

Look closely at the above photo and spot the tiny red fish swimming in the wrong direction near where the carpet transitions to a different pattern. That would be me. Lost. Thankfully, the fish on the carpet on the Pride of America will point you in the right direction. They swim toward the front of the ship.

12. Relax On The Sun Decks

The photo above may cause introverts to run, hyperventilating, to the nearest paper bag (I’m breathing into one right now!). If you prefer a more private and serene place to relax, hit the sun decks above the Lido for comfortable and more secluded lounging options.

13. Pick Up A Beach Towel At The Beach Shop Or As You Exit The Ship

Beach towels will not be provided in your cabin or freely available on loungers like you may be used to on other lines and ships. Instead, they must be borrowed (by providing your state room number to ensure you return them – your account will be charged if you don’t) at either the Beach Shop (located midship on deck 11, right next to Dolce Gelato) or as you exit the ship on port days.

14. Walk Or Jog On The Promenade Deck

One of my very favorite things to do on a cruise is to walk the promenade deck while listening to an audio book and stalking wildlife. And, if allowed, I’ll also jog out there early in the morning to justify the 45,000 calories I consume in an average cruise day. Like minded poʻe (people) will be thrilled with the expansive promenade deck wrapping all the way around deck 6 on the Pride of America. Just be sure to walk in the right direction. I didn’t notice the tiny arrows on the wall (I told you, I’m that red fish!) and got cussed out by an aggressive power walker for going the wrong way. E kala mai (sorry)!

15. Arrive 15 Minutes Early To Theater Shows To Score A Good Seat

This is important on nights at sea when the shows are more widely attended and prime seats fill up fast. When staying overnight at a port, shows and restaurants will be less crowded as many passengers will choose to eat and recreate off the ship.

16. Smoke At The Waikiki Bar

Or avoid the Waikiki bar on deck 13 aft if you’re sensitive to cigarette smoke or just think it smells worse than dog farts (I’m currently opening windows in my apartment thanks to Henry, my rescue mutt, and wishing I was at the Waikiki Bar even though I don’t smoke, but that’s just me). This is the only designated smoking area on the ship.

17. Don’t Look For The Casino

You’ll waste your whole vacation seeking something that doesn’t exist, like me on my never ending quest for a career that allows me to cruise for free. Because gambling is illegal in Hawaii, the Pride of America doesn’t have a casino. There’s always the claw machine in the arcade though or you can place bets among your friends on how many free hot dogs you can eat at the Key West Grill on deck 12. #loopholes

18. Attend Enrichment Programs Hosted By Your Hawaii Ambassador

A variety of enrichment lectures, activities, and crafts will be hosted by the ship’s Hawaii ambassador, a local resident of the islands. We particularly enjoyed the flower lei making class, offered for free, that included plentiful and beautiful fresh flowers. We each made one and used them to decorate our cabin for the remainder of our voyage. Their lovely smell almost masked the stench of my gym clothes. Almost.

19. Double Check Your Final Bill

We found a mistake on our final bill – we were charged for several drinks that should have been included in the Hawaii Beverage Package. No biggie, I called guest services and they refunded our credit card. But double check your own bill for errors. It actually pays to do this every few days (you can view it on the TV in your cabin) or even daily as lines and waits for guest services can be longer toward the end of the cruise.

Dining And Drinking Tips For The Pride Of America

20. consider the value of the hawaii beverage package.

As I mentioned earlier, due to the port heavy itinerary, it may not be worth paying the service charges to receive the Hawaii Beverage Package as a perk and definitely wouldn’t be worth it for most people to purchase it outright. But depending on how much you plan on drinking, this is something to consider.

The Hawaii Beverage Package includes most alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (including boxed water which is nice to have for port days) up to $15 (and you’ll just pay the difference for any drinks over $15). Note that you will pay tax on the retail price of each drink while at port in Hawaii. Most of the items on the bill I have posted above are tax charges on our drinks.

You can take a look at the bar menus here to get an idea of the drink prices so you can weigh the package versus an à la carte approach. We did elect to receive the Hawaii Beverage Package as one of our “free” perks and believe we got our money’s worth. But not everyone will with so little time spent on the ship.

21. Understand How To Get Free Espresso Drinks With The Hawaii Beverage Package

The Hawaii Beverage Package generally does NOT include espresso coffee drinks, such as those on the menu at the John Adams Coffee Bar:

However, there are a few exceptions to this. First, you CAN order a from a limited selection of espresso drinks (espressos, double espressos, lattes, and cappuccinos) while dining in the restaurants and they WILL be covered under the Hawaii Beverage Package. For breakfast, I’d recommend a double shot of espresso paired with a shot of Bailey’s. Start the day off right!

You can also order an Irish coffee (I like to add a shot of Bailey’s to mine) or an espresso martini – both of these ARE covered under the Hawaii Beverage Package. However, note that the espresso martini is currently priced at $18, so you will have to pay the $4 extra above the $15 covered by the package. Try at least one of these though, they’re amazing!

22. Try The Free Alternative Restaurants

In addition to the buffet and main dining rooms, there are three additional complimentary restaurants worth trying at least once: Key West Bar and Grill, Cadillac Diner, and East Meets West. Key West Bar and Grill is a small buffet style grill on deck 12 offering burgers, hot dogs, fries, and salads. Both the Cadillac Diner (American classics) and East Meets West (Asian) are small, sit down restaurants and can get crowded at popular times. I recommend going at off times, like in the afternoon on a port day for the Cadillac Diner and early evening on the first night of the cruise for East Meets West. 23. Eat Breakfast In The Dining Room To Avoid Buffet Crowds

The Aloha Cafe (buffet) on the Pride of America was very crowded during breakfast hours as everyone was trying to grab a quick bite before heading out to port. For a more relaxing experience (and better food, in my opinion), eat breakfast in the Skyline dining room. There was never a wait to be seated and service was fast. 24. Order The Pound Cake French Toast

I was happy to see three daily breakfast specials on the menu in the Skyline Dining Room on the Pride of America (this hasn’t been the case on some of the other smaller NCL ships I’ve sailed). And I was thrilled (and drooling) when I saw the pound cake french toast, my all-time favorite breakfast item on NCL, as a one of the specials. I’d dine at Skyline every day just so you don’t miss it. Trust me, it’s that good!

25. Book A Luau Instead Of A Specialty Restaurant

Because Hawaii is the main attraction on this cruise, I would encourage you to sample local Hawaiian ‘ono grinds (delicious food) by eating some of your meals in port, perhaps skipping the specialty restaurants on the ship if cost is a concern. And I especially recommend booking a luau. You can book the popular Luau Kalamaku through the ship, but I suggest you to shop around to get a better price. Here are some options available through Viator .

26. Reserve Specialty Restaurants Early

If you do decide to dine at a specialty restaurant, be sure to book your preferred time early as the popular times fill up fast. You can book certain restaurants before you sail by going to your reservation online or you can book via the reservations desk (right next to guest services on deck 5 midship), via the NCL app, or by placing a call to reservations from your stateroom after you board.

27. Don’t Miss The Puddings Behind The Dessert Station In The Buffet

While I’m the last person (or dog for that matter) you should come to for fashion advice (the average Fido strutting the streets of Seattle or riding in a designer purse is better dressed than I am), I’m the premier expert when it comes to dessert. And I consider the bread and rice puddings available in the buffet on the Pride of America some of the very best at sea. I particularly love the chocolate chip bread pudding (covered in caramel sauce and vanilla soft serve) and the honey rice pudding.

They’re easy to miss though, hidden on a counter behind the dessert station and next to one of the soft serve machines. You’re welcome – I was tempted to keep this one to myself.

28. Choose The Main Dining Room (MDR) For Dinner That Best Fits Your Style

The Pride of America has two main dining rooms open for dinner (both of these are included at no extra charge in your cruise fare): the Skyline restaurant (deck 5 aft) and the Liberty restaurant (deck 6 aft). While their menus are identical, the decor and dress code will be different. For cruise casual attire (where shorts and T-shirts are common and acceptable), dine at the Skyline Restaurant. If you prefer a more elegant dining experience, opt for the Liberty Restaurant which requires a collared shirt for men and does not allow shorts.

29. Make A Reservation For Dinner In Your Chosen Main Dining Room

While you can show up at either of the main dining rooms (Liberty or Skyline) for dinner at any time during operating hours without a reservation and wait in line to be seated, I’d strongly recommend making a reservation. The line for those without a reservation can be long and there’s a separate podium and hostess for those with a reservation. I always felt a little guilty bypassing the huge line as the reservations hostess walked us right in to be seated. But I overcompensated for my guilt by childishly taunting my fellow passengers: neener, neener, neener!

30. Order Multiple Items In The Main Dining Room

Portions in the main dining rooms can be small for Prof. Cruise, Mr. Cruise, and others with big appetites. Thankfully, you can order as many items as you want! On one night none of the entree selections appealed to Mr. Cruise, but he liked the sound of all the appetizers. So he ordered them all! Be sure to specify to wait staff if you want them brought out one at a time or all together. And consider offering them an extra tip for the effort it takes to bring out all those dishes!

I always bring along a pack of these cruise staff thank you cards and pass them out with cash inside to anyone who has made my vacation extra special (I gave out a lot of these in the Skyline Restaurant on the Pride of America – service was fast and excellent!).

31. Get A Nightly Crepe From The Buffet

Even if you’ve already eaten multiple desserts from the restaurant, there’s always room for a made-to-order crepe. Hit the buffet during dinner hours each night so you can try all the delicious combinations. Or just order the Nutella and fresh cream for seven consecutive days like I did.

Port And Excursion Tips For Your Hawaii Cruise On The Pride Of America

32. book private excursions.

Cruise line excursions are expensive and sometimes feel crowded and rushed. However, many cruise passengers are nervous about booking tours or exploring ports on their own for fear of missing the ship and becoming an unwilling youtube star as they desperately flail around on land, “wait, wait!,” before jumping into the sea as a last ditch attempt to rescue their vacation (the biggest incentive to book cruise line excursions is that they guarantee to either hold the ship for you or transport you on their dime to the next port in the event of a late return).

But if ever there were a time to skip the expensive ship excursions and book tours through private local companies or venture out and explore on your own, it’s this cruise! Why? Because you’ll be staying overnight at two ports – Maui and Kaua’i . So if you book tours or explore on your own via a rental car or public transportation, you don’t need to worry about what time you get back to the ship – the gangway will stay open all night and into the next day. Here are my top shore excursion picks for Maui and Kaua’i offered by Viator (owned by Trip Advisor).

33. Pick Up Tender Tickets For Kona Near Guest Services Beginning At 6:30am

Kona is a tender port, meaning the ship will anchor out in the open ocean and you’ll need to board a smaller boat to ferry you to shore. To avoid thousands of people lining up at once, you’ll need a tender ticket with an assigned time (unless your latitudes level is Gold or above in which case your ship card will serve as your tender ticket and you can line up whenever you want or if you’re booked on a ship excursion in which case your excursion ticket will serve as your tender ticket).

In order to get the time you want, you’ll want to pick up your tender ticket as soon as they start offering them at 6:30am at a table near the Guest Services desk. I’d even suggest arriving a bit before 6:30am as a line will begin to form between 6-6:15am.

34. Save Money In Kaua’i And Kona

If you have limited funds for port activities and are not comfortable renting a car, prioritize booking excursions and tours in Maui and Hilo as there is nothing to do near the cruise terminals at those ports. In both Kaua’i and Kona there are free or inexpensive things to do within walking distance of the ship (or near Kailua Pier where your tender boat will deliver you, in the case of Kona).

For Kona I recommend snorkeling (or just relaxing) at Kamakahonu Beach and checking out the Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark (both located right next to Kailua Pier where your tender boat will drop you), shopping or dining along Ali’i Dr, and visiting historical sights such as Hulihe‘e Palace and Mokuaikaua Church. All of these suggestions are a very short walk from your tender boat. If you feel like venturing out a bit further, you can catch a $2 (cash only and the driver cannot make change) open-air trolley that will take you around town. 35. Look For Rainbows

I think I saw more rainbows on this trip than in all of my prior 35 (+7) years of life. And if you’re lucky, you’ll find the Pride of America at the end of one! Better than a pot of gold if you ask me – because I’d just use it to buy a cruise anyway!

Best time to cruise Alaska: June-August

The cruise season in Alaska runs from mid-April to September, with a few cruise lines extending the season into early October. Nearly every month has something to recommend it, depending on what you're looking for.

When to cruise to Alaska for the best weather

If you want to avoid rain, May is typically the driest month, with plenty of sunshine and highs in the 50s. It's a great month for nature lovers to cruise to Alaska because May is when you'll see much of the wildlife emerging, including migrating gray whales, Dall sheep, moose and migratory birds.

If you want to travel to Alaska a little earlier in the season in April, the weather is cool but pleasant, and the nights are still long enough that you may be able to catch a glimpse of the northern lights.

July is the height of peak season, with the warmest weather of the year and long daylight hours. It's also the best month for wildlife viewing, especially for humpback whales, brown and black bears and migrating shorebirds and puffins. However, you should know that you'll have to deal with pesky mosquitos in late June and July, especially in the interior part of the state.

Best time to cruise Alaska for low prices

You can usually find the best prices for an Alaska cruise during the shoulder season months of April, May, September and October. For example, starting rates are as low as $603 per person for a seven-night Inside Passage cruise sailing round-trip from Seattle with Royal Caribbean in May 2024. In mid-September, the same itinerary starts at $631 per person. However, by the peak summer season in late June and July, the starting price is $921 per person.

The shoulder season months are also the least crowded times to visit Alaska because kids are in school and fewer families are vacationing. Just be aware that if you head to Alaska early in the spring, some of the stores may not have opened yet. Arrive in the fall, and you may find that tour operators and shops have begun to cut back hours or have closed.

The advantage of traveling in the shoulder season is that you can experience the towns without the summer crowds and with cooler temperatures. Shoppers can take advantage of end-of-season sales on souvenirs.

Best time to cruise the Caribbean and Bahamas: December-May

Almost any time of year is a good time to sail to the Caribbean or Bahamas , with year-round sunny skies, warm temperatures and glistening turquoise blue waters.

When to cruise to the Caribbean and Bahamas for the best weather

Some of the Caribbean's nicest weather is in May, at the start of shoulder season. The weather is particularly pleasant in the Southern Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Barbados, St. Lucia, Dominique, Grenada and St. Vincent, with highs in the 80s and just slightly cooler evenings in the 70s.

January through March also offers picture-perfect weather. January is the beginning of the dry season, so the humidity is lower, and the temperatures are in the 70s and 80s.

Best time to cruise the Caribbean and Bahamas for low prices

Shoulder season in the Caribbean is May through November, the months just before peak season, which is December through April. This is the time when you'll typically find better deals on pricing, especially in May and September to November.

Fares for seven-night cruises in May 2024 are as low as $499 per person on an MSC cruise sailing round-trip from Miami and even less expensive at $399 per person come September.

The official Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to Nov. 30, falls within shoulder season, so you may need to weigh low prices with the risk of a storm affecting your trip. Also, some fares in the summer months can be higher with many families taking vacations. Prices for similar cruises with MSC between June and August range from $649 to $799.

Best time to cruise the Caribbean and Bahamas to avoid crowds

The best time to cruise to the Caribbean without all the tourists is typically in late fall and between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. You can also avoid the crowds in late April and early May after the spring break rush but before school lets out and summer vacations begin.

Best time to cruise the Mediterranean: April-May, September-October

The cruise season in the Mediterranean usually begins in April and ends in November, with peak season falling between June and September. Some cruise lines also offer sailings into the winter months to southern Mediterranean destinations, such as Egypt, Israel, Morocco, southern Spain and the Canary Islands, because they have warm weather during that time.

When to cruise the Mediterranean for the best weather

The spring (April and May) and the fall (September and October) afford some of the best weather in the Mediterranean, with sunny days and comfortable temperatures. Though the busiest season for Mediterranean cruises is typically July and August, the temperatures can be unbearably hot (85 degrees and higher).

Look to the shoulder season to find the best deals on Mediterranean cruises. During April and May and September to November, the combination of cooler temperatures, a higher chance of rain and a lack of family vacations leads to more availability and lower prices for cruises.

For example, in May 2023, you can sail on a seven-night Western Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona to Rome with Princess Cruises starting at $699 per person. If you prefer to travel in the fall, you can still find a good deal on the same itinerary for $848 per person in September. In mid-June, the same voyage costs $1,132. Since you'll have the greatest choice of ships midsummer, you might luck out and find a one-off deal if you can be flexible about ship and sail date.

Best time to cruise the Mediterranean to avoid crowds

Lower prices also mean fewer crowds. The height of summer is incredibly busy in the Mediterranean, especially in smaller destinations, including the port towns in the Greek islands of Santorini and Mykonos and in popular cities in Italy, France and Croatia. The spring and fall are the optimal times to visit, with fewer tourists, cooler temperatures and lower prices. You'll also find that most everything is open during that time and easier to see without battling the crowds.

Best time to cruise Hawaii: June-August

Hawaii is a year-round destination, but you'll only find one ship that sails the islands throughout the entire year: Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America. Other ships sail one-way or round-trip itineraries to the Hawaiian Islands from the U.S. West Coast, typically between September and April.

When to cruise to Hawaii for the best weather

Hawaii has just two seasons due to its tropical climate. Summer is from May to October, and winter falls between November and April. There's not much variation in temperature between the two seasons, with daytime temperatures hovering around 80 degrees in the summer and not falling much more than that into the high 70s in the winter. Since the temperatures are similar during both seasons, the best time to cruise the islands is when there's less chance of precipitation, which is during the summer months of June, July and August.

Best time to cruise Hawaii for low prices

Cruises to Hawaii will be less expensive in the fall when school is in session.

Summer is peak season with family vacations and honeymooners, so prices will be higher then. Expect a lift during spring break weeks, as well. Even though January, February and March bring more rain, the winter months are also peak season for tourists … and whales.

For example, a seven-night round-trip cruise in November or early December 2024 with Norwegian Cruise Line starts at $1,649. The highest fares are in June, at $2,149. January and February fares are as high as $1,949.

If your heart is set on traveling to Hawaii in the summer, or you want to escape the winter's snow at home in February, look for deals with an early booking. You can also take a chance and wait for last-minute specials if you're flexible.

Best time to cruise Hawaii to avoid crowds

Springtime will be the quietest time to visit the Aloha State, although you might find an uptick of families traveling for spring break during March and April. The summer is the busiest time for vacationers, and the winter months bring whale-watching enthusiasts and surfers. There are also two major sporting events in January, so you'll want to avoid the crowds on Oahu and Maui during that month.

Best time to cruise Northern Europe: June-August

The cruise season is short if you want to sail to Northern Europe, the Baltic or the Scandinavian fjords; itineraries run from April through October. However, if you love the cold and want to chase the aurora borealis in Norway, several lines offer northern lights itineraries in the winter months.

When to cruise Northern Europe for the best weather

The warmest months in Northern Europe are mid-June to August, making the height of the summer season the most desirable time to cruise Scandinavia and the Baltic region. This is also the Land of the Midnight Sun, where you'll have nearly 24 hours of sunlight in places like northern Norway from early June to mid-July.

The two shoulder seasons – from April to early June and September to October – offer comfortable temperatures, but you'll need to dress in layers.

Best time to cruise Northern Europe for low prices

The shoulder seasons may not be the warmest, but they typically offer better pricing than summer cruises. For example, a 14-night sailing to the Baltic with Holland America is $949 in early May 2023 but $1,329 in mid-June.

The shoulder seasons will also have fewer passengers and tourists — and you may even have some attractions to yourself in the cities and towns.

Best time to cruise the Panama Canal: December-March

Transiting the Panama Canal from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean is a bucket-list trip for many travelers. Panama and the bordering countries in Central America have a tropical climate with lush landscapes and rainforests, so you can expect wet weather at certain times of the year. The height of the Panama Canal cruise season is between October and April.

When to cruise the Panama Canal for the best weather

You'll find moderate temperatures (in the mid-70s to low 80s) and drier weather in January and February. During those months, it's more pleasant to engage in outdoor adventures like hiking and kayaking, which are a highlight when visiting places like Panama and Costa Rica.

December, March and April also offer nice weather, although the rainy season sometimes starts as early as mid-March before continuing through the fall.

It's hard to determine the best time to cruise the Panama Canal at the lowest prices. Many cruise lines offer short seasons or mix up itineraries, so there's not much grounds for comparison. However, if you want a deal, the one thing that's certain is you should not sail over the holidays.

For example, Windstar Cruises ' seven-night Costa Rica and Panama Canal sailings mostly start at $2,299 in February and March 2024 and $2,399 in January. However, its New Year's sailing starts at $2,799 per person.

The Panama Canal cruise season picks up at the end of the rainy season, so you'll find fewer tourists during October and November when the weather is still wet.

To avoid crowds in port, try not to cruise during the Panamanian festivals that take place in early spring and from November into the winter. These festivals can also affect the opening of attractions, restaurants, banks and other venues you might want to visit ashore.

The Mexican Riviera (i.e., the Pacific coast of Mexico) is a year-round cruise destination. Most ships sail the itinerary in the fall, winter and spring because those same ships head to Alaska for the summer.

When to cruise to Mexico for the best weather

For the best weather, book your cruise during the dry season, between November and May. The weather can be cool at times along the Pacific coast, so if you're looking for warmer temperatures, you'll need to head to cities located farther south, such as Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan.

The summer months and early fall will have some of the best rates, but you'll need to take into consideration the hotter temperatures in the summer that can reach into the 90s – and with high humidity. It's also the rainy season, and it's possible to have hurricanes during these months.

For example, a seven-night round-trip voyage from Long Beach, California, along Mexico's Pacific coast with Carnival Cruise Line starts at $629 in June. The same cruise is even less expensive in October at $464 per person.

The dry season is also the quietest time to cruise to Mexico. Family vacations are over, and the kids are back in school. You will, however, want to avoid booking a cruise around the holidays at the end of the year and during spring break (March and early April).

Best time to cruise Canada and New England: September-October

The cruise season in Canada and New England begins in May and ends in October, with a few ships even making the voyage in April. You'll find more ships in this region between August and October as it gets closer to peak leaf-peeping season.

When to cruise to Canada and New England for the best weather

The summer offers some of the nicest weather, with daytime highs in Boston and New York between 80 and 90 degrees. Along the coastal areas in Maine and Canada, you'll find highs in the 70s in July. Be prepared for cooler evenings.

The summer months are also the best time to see several species of whales off the coast of Newfoundland, including humpback whales.

However, many travelers choose to cruise to Canada and New England specifically for the fall foliage. Peak leaf season begins around mid-September and runs through October. If fall colors are your goal, resign yourself to cooler temperatures on your sailing, especially in the evenings.

For the best cruise deals, look at voyages sailing before August. A seven-night sailing from Boston to Montreal in May 2024 with Holland America starts at $779 per person. A similar seven-night itinerary from Boston to Quebec City in late September starts at $1,279 per person.

You'll have fewer crowds on shore and in the port towns during the shoulder season in the spring when kids are in school and before mid-September, which is the beginning of peak foliage season in Canada.

Summertime is busy in Canada and New England because of the optimal weather and family vacations. You can also expect more ships and crowds in town during late September and October at the height of the leaf-peeping season.

Best time to cruise Bermuda: April-June

Bermuda's cruise season runs between April and November, with a few ships calling on Royal Naval Dockyard in December. While the pink-sand beaches and glistening, turquoise waters offer a slice of paradise, the archipelago in the western North Atlantic Ocean does not stay warm year-round. The subtropical climate of these British islands has winter temperatures that dip down into the low 60s and high 50s.

April is one of the best months to sail to Bermuda as the temperatures are pleasant and in the 70s, and it's one of the driest months of the year, along with May. May and early June are great options for cruises to the archipelago, and you can expect highs in the low 80s by June.

July and August are the hottest months with high humidity, but it's a great time to hit the beach with water temperatures around 81 degrees.

April through early June and September to November are typically when you'll find the cheapest prices. Norwegian Cruise Line has a seven-night itinerary sailing round-trip from Boston in April that starts at $779 per person. The same itinerary is $979 in June and $1,019 per person in July.

If you want the beaches to yourself, book a cruise in April. Even though there are festivities during the month (including Easter and the Peppercorn Ceremony), it's still early in the tourist season.

By late spring, summer and fall, there are more festivals, sporting events and golf tournaments that bring visitors to the islands. In the summertime, you'll have family vacations and people with vacation homes in Bermuda returning for the season and warmer weather.

The height of the cruise season in Australia and New Zealand begins in early October and runs through the end of April because these months are spring and summer in the Southern Hemisphere. You will find a few lines sailing an extended season Down Under.

The hospitality of this business was top tier! Shawn and his team were so awesome and helpful. They were very catering from the beginning to the end! I will definitely recommend their gondola rides to anyone who come to Honolulu, Hawaii for vacationing. They provided refreshments along with the umbrellas for sun coverage which was a nice touch as the sun was out during our ride. Highly recommend!

This cruise was filled with laughs, good vibes and beautiful views of Ala Wai Harbor. If you're looking for something more intimate and romantic to do this is definitely it! 10/10 hospitality, thank you again!

Was hoping for a romantic ride but was anything but.... The woman serving us was drinking and eating too which was very awkward and made us feel uncomfortable. The guy rowing/driving the gondola kept telling us stories about how customers were proposing and kept asking us about our marriage. Between talking to us and interrupting our conversations, he would sing along with the music very loudly and off key I might add. We paid for the experience for us, not to share with them. On top of that we never got our photos even after emailing them and asking. Not worth the money, completely unprofessional and you do not get everything that's "included" in the price.

Had an amazing time here on our honeymoon! Many thanks to Sean who is hilarious. They offer sweet treats and a relaxing and welcoming environment while riding in a comfortable gondola down the canals. Remember to kiss under the bridge for good luck!

This was such a pleasant and fun experience. We had a great time learning about the history of Waikiki and the canal. Chatting about Hawaii and all it has to offer - while sipping chilled cider and eating delicious chocolate-covered macadamias Our gondoliers were such a pleasure to hangout with and made us relax and laugh the entire time. They entertained us with singing and breathtaking views of the city and the canal. We were even able to see a baby turtle during the tour. This is definitely an aloha-filed experience you should not miss!

2024 has been loaded with horror releases, with scary stories about everything from rampaging spiders to satanic late-night talk shows. This crop is distinctive for its unconventional reworkings of well-worn tropes. There’s a slasher that owes as much to Terrence Malick as to Jason Voorhees; a dystopian-future tale that eschews global destruction to examine the implosion of one family; and two movies about nuns with evil pregnancies. Better yet: Several of these efforts have made waves at the indie box office, illustrating the horror audience’s affinity for going to strange new places.

Some of the year’s biggest titles are to come, from original works (“Trap,” “Longlegs”) to hotly anticipated sequels (“MaXXXine,” “Alien: Romulus”) to bone-chilling indies (“Terrifier 3,” “Oddity”). But the following already stand tall among 2024’s best releases.

Universal Pictures

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have perfected their mix of scares and comedy with “Scream VI” and “Ready or Not,” and “Abigail” is no exception. When a gang of crooks kidnaps a vampire who appears to be a little girl, they’re quickly in over their heads in this gory caper, elevated by inspired performances by Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens.

The First Omen

20th Century Studios

Director Arkasha Stevenson and star Nell Tiger Free make the most of this moody prequel to the nearly 50-year-old franchise. Deft camerawork and creepy sets build a haunting backdrop for Sister Margaret’s investigation into her unwanted conception. And Free’s increasingly feral performance echoes cinematic triumphs like 1981’s “Possession.”

The creature feature of the year is this French spider bonanza, in which director and co-writer Sébastien Vanicek brings a tidal wave of lethal arachnids to a run-down apartment building. Audiences will jump, flinch and itch as the body count rises and the spiders run amok across every wall and surface.

IFC Films / Shudder

Robert Morgan’s dour look at artistic obsession blurs the lines between reality and nightmare as a stop-motion animator (Aisling Franciosi) is freed from her controlling mother but finds untold darkness while fashioning her own story. A punishing mixture of psychological, surreal and body horror, Morgan’s vision is hopeless yet gorgeous.

All hail Sydney Sweeney’s coronation as a scream queen, as she leads this deliciously lurid chronicle of a young nun who finds herself pregnant. Helmed by Michael Mohan, the handsomely shot saga cranks up the creepiness until Andrew Lobel’s script flies into B-movie madness, ratcheting up the gore and giving Sweeney an indelible final shot.

I Saw the TV Glow

This touching, surreal drama about lonely teens forever bonded through a cult TV series is equal parts hypnotic and poignant. Writer-director Jane Schoenbrun has created a bold story exploring the dysphoria of the closeted trans experience, where the unease of alienation becomes more disturbing than any monster could be.

Director Caitlin Cronenberg’s feature debut is set in a future where Earth’s resources are limited and citizens are urged to get euthanized for cash to reduce the population. Michael Sparaga’s funny, fleet script focuses on a rich family that can’t buy its way out of trouble this time. A delightfully nasty indie that examines how badly we treat the ones we love.

The Coffee Table

Cinephobia Releasing

Not for the faint of heart, this supremely sinister domestic drama has a hook it’s best not to spoil. Director Caye Casas turns a new father’s purchase of a tacky coffee table into a fable that spins out of control, with a horrific twist of fate so nauseating it will leave viewers drenched in nervous sweat. Go in blind, if you dare.

Late Night With the Devil

David Dastmalchian (“Dune,” “Ant-Man”) is commanding as a second-rate talk show host determined to juice his ratings, so he dreams up a Halloween episode featuring a girl who might be possessed by Satan. The cleverly constructed tale moves in real time and keeps the proceedings erratic right up to an off-the-wall final act.

In a Violent Nature

Director Chris Nash’s innovative take on ’80s slashers is catnip for VHS-era fans. The deliberately paced film follows a supernatural killer named Johnny, with a camera over his shoulder keeping the viewpoint tightly controlled. Amid the outrageous kills and crisp camerawork lies a sharp satire laced with empathy, beauty and genuine fear.

It’s affordable and super-simple to use.

If your main objective when going to the beach is getting from your car or hotel to the shore as quickly as possible, you may be interested in the Whitsunday Collapsible Folding Cart. The wagon earned our pick for easiest setup because there really is no setup at all. Simply unfold it in one swift motion to open it, and fold it back down the same way. Once open, it holds up to 120 pounds and boasts a 360 degree swivel telescopic handle that can be adjusted lengthwise. The wheels also rotate 360 degrees, and shoppers can choose from 12 different colors and prints.

Based on the wagon’s simplicity and reasonable price point, we believe it would make the perfect addition to any beach gear collection. It’s worth noting that while the simplicity of this wagon impressed us, it wasn’t the easiest to actually push on the sand.

It’s a bit bulky and can take up to 30 minutes to assemble.

Toting large, heavy items has never been so easy. The wagon includes two 12-inch quick-release balloon tires that smoothly roll over sand, as well as a tire pump and inflation tool. We also found this wagon to be one of the easiest to use on sand. The tires allow for the wagon to sit on top of the sand rather than being dragged through it.

It also features an internal volume that's 40 percent larger than other similar wagons, meaning it can fit everything you need and then some. 

The Navatiee dazzled us for a number of reasons, including the easy fold-down process and the sheer volume of cargo it can carry.

However, it’s still capable of folding down enough to easily stow it away in your car or home. The wagon is built with 3.9-inch thick wheels that roll right over sand, rocks, and twigs, as well as a steel frame that can carry up to 220 pounds. A telescoping handle and two mesh cup holders on the front up the convenience factor while a removable lining makes cleaning a breeze. To top it all off, the wagon is waterproof.

This is best for anyone that needs to carry a lot of stuff to the beach and doesn't want a lot of fuss. It was easy to pull through sand and gravel and the handle made it easy to navigate.

We thoroughly enjoyed the strength of the wagon and how easy it was to pull. We were also able to pack large items like chairs into the wagon without affecting the smooth roll.

Best All-terrain

It rolls like a dream over gravel, sand, and everything in between — plus, it's safe for kids to ride in.

It takes some added effort to pull over soft sand.

Larger families, or heavy packers, will love this large capacity wagon that can handle pretty much any terrain. It's very easy to set up with clear assembly instructions and can be folded down quickly for easy storage. Even when full, the wagon rolls well over gravel, packed sand, and most other terrains. This is a great option for keeping kids safe and comfortable on long walks or outings as it comes with a snack tray, cupholders, and a retractable canopy. There are also enough safety buckles for up to three children, making this a great option for families with multiple kids.

After our weeks of tests, we love that the wagon is extremely sturdy and well-built. The quality is so high that it makes this wagon well worth the price and will last long enough for many little ones to enjoy for years to come.

Other Beach Wagons We Liked

Mac Sports Double Decker Wagon : We enjoyed this wagon’s easy setup and substantial storage space, but felt that it would be better as a park wagon, as the wheels got stuck easily in sand and gravel, and the handle often got stuck in the locked position. 

Seina Compact Collapsible Wagon : While this wagon impressed us with a sturdy build and compact size when folded down, its tiny wheels simply could not traverse sand or rocks. 

Gorilla Carts Steel Garden Cart : This wagon is durable and works as it should, but we disliked that it took 20 minutes to set up. While you could set it up once and leave it that way forever, it’s huge, so it would only work for someone who has a large trunk on their vehicle.  

To review each beach wagon in this roundup accurately, we took them to the beach to personally “test drive.” We wheeled them over fine sand and various other terrains to experience the wagons the same way a shopper would. To get a true feel for the beach wagons, we actually used the wagons during real, day-long beach trips.

Tips for Buying a Beach Wagon

Think about the terrain you’ll use it on.

Will you be pulling your wagon at the beach? The park? Your backyard garden? Not all wagons are created equal, and not all are made for gliding over soft, grainy surfaces. If you plan on using your wagon as a true beach wagon, be sure to choose one with large, thick tires that swivel and rotate—otherwise, you may end up dragging your wagon through sand or gravel rather than smoothly rolling it across.  

Consider what (or whom) you’ll be carrying

It’s unwise to assume that a beach wagon made for carrying gear and equipment is also a good choice for toting kids or pets around and vice versa. Your wagon may effortlessly hold beach chairs and coolers, but a much heavier child or animal that moves around likely won’t be as easy to pull — in fact, your wagon may sink too far into the sand to move, or break altogether. It’s also worth noting that many wagons made for children and pets may not be fit for toting gear, as built-in seats take up ample space and make the wagon unnecessarily heavy. Look closely at the tires and the weight capacity to suit your needs.

Know that some take up more space than others

Some beach wagons fold down nearly flat, which is incredibly convenient for many reasons. Many fold down partially, which is also quite helpful. Still, some wagons don’t fold in any way. Before you buy, think about how you’ll be storing and transporting your wagon, and opt for one that re-sizes accordingly. 

Beach wagons are meant to carry everything from towels and a change of clothes to beach umbrellas , chairs, and coolers. It’s also a good idea to keep items like water bottles, sunscreen, and even a first aid kit in your wagon’s pockets. Feel free to also load your wagon with yard tools, laundry, or lightweight gear for various hobbies when you’re not using it at the beach. You should avoid putting your kids or pets in your wagon unless it is specifically made to carry them. 

When it comes to transportation, most wagons fold down small enough to fit in car trunks, and some are even compact enough to stow in your vehicle’s backseat. For a more permanent, year-round storage spot, fold your wagon down as small as it gets, and place it on a closet floor or a garage or attic if you have the room. Flatter wagons can even fit under your bed.
