Hello everyone. I have the following problem with a 2011 Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6 e-HDI 112ps MANUAL TRANSMISSION. Customer states that the cruise control does not work after making a DPF off procedure. I found that the ECU was reading the clutch pedal position as permanently pressed. After replacing the sensor, it became functional again. The readings via diagnose of the brake and clutch position sensors are correct. I know these are common problems within these models. Well, the problem now is that the cruise control engages in every gear except the sixth. 4th and 5th gears only work sometimes, but the 6th does not work at all. With the diagnostics equipment connected, I read that clutch and brake pedals are released, but the CC does not engage because the current gear recognized by the engine ECU is neutral. It recognizes the 5th but, as soon as i engage the 6th gear it recognizes it for a second aprox and then it suddenly shows "neutral". I already flashed the original software to discard the modified software as the cause of the problem, but with no results. The ECU fitted to this model is a SIEMENS SID807. Any hints? I am completely out of ideas.

The ECU calculates the gear based on RPM and speed. It gets speed from ABS (esp). ESP errors?
No errors stored on ESP. The ECU seems to get correct vehicle speed data, as per diagnostic parameters.

perhaps cylinder reference sensor on camshaft - on top of engine behind plastic cover - can become dirty and make intermittent speed error readings. Cruise needs engine speed and car velocity to work on manual transmissions. Also there is possibility that DPF off messed up cruise control parameters (if its a generic fix - possible).. you can set back virgin map and see if cruise work or not to be sure.

Thanks for your ideas. Could an intermittent engine speed read error lead exclusively to a cruise control failure? The car behaves fine apart from this issue. On top of that, CC is just faulty in a specific range of gears. For example, the ECU always recognizes the 3rd gear correctly. I have already reset the ECU to stock condition with no results. The car behaves exactly the same with stock software.

Yes each time engine rotation speed is "invalid" (e.g. out of range, error, not available..) cruise control will abort (act like when you press break pedal or clutch).this Might be you have wiring problems its not uncommon to happen on this cars, in that case you will need a good electrician to find broken wire/s. Good luck, hope my comments help.

I wonder if the car had a gearbox swap. Thing that 3rd is always well detected and the others fail randomly.... and 6th only recognized first second and then as neutral.... maybe the gear ratio stored in ecu does not match the gearbox actually installed, and thus original software on ecu also not work properly. just an idea tho.

Cruise control

This driving assistance function allows you to drive at the speed of your choice

This driving assistance function allows you to drive at the speed of your choice without the need to action the accelerator. This system is available above 40 km/h (25 mph), with 4th gear or higher on a manual gearbox or 2nd gear or higher on an automatic gearbox.

Note: Information relating to the cruise control is displayed in zone A of the instrument panel.

To select the function

Turn control 1 to position "REG".

Accelerate to the desired speed, then press button 2 or button 4. The cruise speed will then be memorised and displayed in zone A on the instrument panel.

You can then release the accelerator pedal. The vehicle will automatically keep

You can then release the accelerator pedal. The vehicle will automatically keep to that chosen speed.

Note: The vehicle speed may vary slightly from that memorised.

Adjustment of the memorised speed while cruise control is in operation

To adjust the memorised speed, displayed in zone A, press on:

- button 4 to increase the speed, - button 2 to decrease the speed.

Note: you can use successive presses to modify the cruise speed in steps of 1 mph and a continuous press to jump in steps of 5 mph.

To exceed the cruise speed temporarily

While cruise control is in use, it is always possible to go above the cruise speed simply by pressing the accelerator pedal (for example to overtake another vehicle). The speed displayed in zone A flashes. You have only to release the accelator pedal to return to your cruise speed.

Note: if during cruise control the system cannot keep to the cruise speed (e.g. on a steep descent), then the speed flashes. If necessary, brake to curb your speed.

Deactivation of cruise control with memorised speed

Deactivation of cruise control with memorised speed

- Either by pressing the brake pedal or the clutch pedal. - Or with a press on button 3. - Or when ESP or ASR is active.

Note: cruise control is disengaged when the gear lever is in neutral position. These actions bring up the display "OFF" in zone A in the instrument panel. These actions do not cancel your cruise speed which remains displayed on the instrument panel.

Citroen C4 Picasso

Citroen was at the head of the pack when MPVs were the sort of vehicles craved by families. The C4 Picasso (five seats) and C4 Grand Picasso (seven seats) were incredibly flexible and allowed the cabin to be changed from being a seven-seater into a two-seat van in a matter of seconds.

Families loved the versatility, plus the fact it was so light and airy, with its huge glass area and ‘up-and-over’ windscreen.

If there was a fly in the ointment, it was that the reliability was a teensy bit questionable, and this situation is unlikely to have changed much as the years and miles have been added to the first-generation C4 Picasso and C4 Grand Picasso. But that’s precisely where Haynes can help, because our C4 Picasso Autofix product can help you diagnose and sort problems with the minimum of fuss. Make a one-time investment in the product and it’ll be there every time you need it to be.

Citroen C4 Picasso

What recalls has the Citroen C4 Picasso Mk1 been subject to?

The Citroen C4 Picasso and its sister car, the C4 Grand Picasso, have both been recalled a few times. The first recall was because the starter motor wiring loom could be subject to chafing, which could cause a short circuit and a risk of fire.

Faulty seatbelt bolts forced another small recall, then 17,628 vehicles were recalled because an out-of-spec parking brake cable replaced. Chafing to a fuel return pipe meant another minor recall.

New brake caliper mounting bolts were required on 134 examples, and faulty sealing of the panoramic sunroof affected 367 cars. Then 307 cars were recalled because of a dodgy brake vacuum pump valve, while a faulty electrical connector in the fuel preheater cover could overheat.

Citroen C4 Picasso

What common problems does the Citroen C4 Picasso Mk1 have?

The Citroen C4 Grand Picasso Mk1 can fall victim to an issue that makes the steering heavy to turn. A new power steering pump is needed.

A noise from the right-hand side of the engine bay can usually be traced to a squeaky engine mount.

It is also not unknown for the engine warning light to illuminate, even though the motor appears to be running correctly.

Owners have also reported a problem that appears to be with the cruise-control and engine start-top systems, but is in fact nothing of the sort.

Finally, the C4 Picasso can start to emit a whine from the engine bay that increases in pitch when the engine is revved.

Citroen C4 Grand Picasso

Has your Citroen C4 Picasso Mk1 steering become heavy?

One of the plus points of the Citroen C4 Picasso is its light steering. So steering that suddenly becomes heavy is going to be disappointing.

First things first, plug a fault-code reader into the OBD socket. If this generates the code C1178, then the issue could be with the car’s ECU, which could require a software update.

However, if no fault appears, then the issue most likely lies with the power steering pump, which will need to be replaced.

And that’s where the Haynes C4 Picasso Autofix can help, because the technical drawings will show you what the pump looks like and where it is, together with the torque settings for all the fastenings.

So, gather together everything you’ll need, look up the Autofix and away you go.

Citroen C4 Picasso

Why is the front of your Citroen C4 Picasso making a noise?

Several owners of the Citroen C4 Picasso and C4 Grand Picasso have reported an unusual noise emanating from the front right of the vehicle.

This noise tends to appear when the car is being driven over rougher roads.

The problem is that there isn’t enough grease on the upper engine mount on the right-hand side of the engine, which you’ll be able to confirm by rocking the engine when the car is at a standstill.

The engine mounts are displayed in detail, along with the required torque for the fasteners. The repair simply involves applying more grease to the noisy part of the engine mount.

Citroen C4 Grand Picasso

Is your Citroen C4 Picasso engine warning light on?

There you are, driving along quite happily in your Citroen C4 Picasso, when all of a sudden there’s an ominous glow from the dashboard. Worryingly, the engine warning light is on. But the car seems to be driving along as normal. What can it be?

Well, in order to find out, you’ll need to plug in a fault-code reader (click here for our test of the best fault-code readers you can buy). If this generates the code P0420, then the issue lies with the catalytic converter, which will have to be replaced.

Citroen C4 Grand Picasso

Why doesn’t your Citroen C4 Picasso cruise control work?

Citroen C4 Picasso owners have told us that on occasion the cruise control in their car refuses to work. Well, technically it actually does work, it’s just that they can’t switch it off again by pressing the brake pedal. Not ideal.

At the same time, the engine stop-start system ceases to operate, and the brake lights are always on.

If you plug in a fault-code reader, it will display the codes P1536, P0504, P0571 and P0703, all of which signify that the most likely culprit is a brake light switch that’s gone on the blink.

Still, it’s easy enough to swap, and just requires you to get down into the driver’s footwell, unplug the old switch and undo the fastening, before fitting a new one and plugging it in.

Citroen C4 Grand Picasso

Does the Citroen C4 Picasso have engine-noise problems?

Well, not usually. However, the Citroen C4 Picasso can occasionally develop a noise that appears to be coming from the engine. It’s a whine that changes in pitch when the engine is revved.

This is an easy fix that’s explained in full in the Haynes C4 Picasso Autofix . The issue lies with the auxiliary drivebelt system, and can be cause by either the drivebelt wearing out or some dirt getting into the system. Either way, the solution is to remove the old belt, clean up the pulleys and fit a new belt. After that, the noise should be gone.

I recently had the same issue, but my airbag warning lights also turned on. If this is the case, it might be the clockspring. There is a recall on clocksprings for Caravans 1998 - 2000 I believe. I got it replaced for free in the dealership. Have seen this problem before. You need to look under dash at brake pedal and find a blue switch with plunger contacting pedal, disconnect connector and jump with a peice of wire and drive to see if cruise works and if it does replace deactivation switch this should get you going.

  • Check the cruise control fuse: The first thing to check is the fuse that controls the cruise control system. Refer to your vehicle's owner manual to locate the fuse box and find the specific fuse for the cruise control. If the fuse is blown, replace it with a new one.
  • Check the brake light switch: The cruise control system is designed to disengage when you step on the brake pedal. If the brake light switch is faulty, the cruise control system may not work. You can test the switch by pressing the brake pedal and checking if the brake lights come on. If the brake lights don't come on, you may need to replace the brake light switch.
  • Check the speed sensor: The speed sensor is responsible for detecting the vehicle's speed and communicating it to the cruise control system. If the speed sensor is faulty or dirty, the cruise control system may not work. You can test the speed sensor with a multimeter or take your vehicle to a mechanic to have it tested.
  • Check the cruise control module: If all the above steps check out, the problem may be with the cruise control module itself. The module may be faulty and may need to be replaced. You can take your vehicle to a mechanic to have the module tested and replaced if necessary.

Why is the air conditioner of my C4 Picasso not working properly?

Why is the air conditioner of my C4 Picasso not working properly?

In short: If there is a problem with the airflow of your C4 Picasso‘s air conditioner, like it barely blows air, there may be a problem with either the cabin filter or the vents . If the air is not cold , it might be because of the following reasons.

Why is the air conditioner of my C4 Picasso not cooling the air properly?

You can detect most of the problems related to your air conditioner by measuring the gas pressure of the system. To do so, you will need a pressure gauge . You can find a chart with the standard pressure levels in our AC’s guide

These are the most common causes of air conditioner failures:

  • Dirty radiator: The air conditioner radiator is right next to the main engine radiator. If it gets dirty and the air does not flow through it anymore, the refrigerant will not cool, and the system will malfunction. It is not hard to notice the radiator is dirty. If that happens, you can clean it with a brush and fix the problem yourself.
  • Damaged control valve: It is the valve that regulates the fluid flow that goes into the compressor. If the fluid does not get to the compressor, the pressure will not rise even if the compressor is spinning. These valves are cheap, so if you are looking for failure causes, you should first rule out this option before spending money on fixing other failures that may be more serious.
  • Clogged filter dryer (it gets cold or becomes frozen): You will notice the filter dryer is clogged if it feels too cold to the touch. In the worst-case scenario, it will be frozen. You will also notice that if you turn the air conditioner off and keep the pressure gauge connected, the pressure will take a lot of time to stabilize. In that case, you should replace the filter.
  • The air conditioner compressor stopped working: The compressor may be damaged internally, or it may not even spin anymore. You can check if it is damaged by checking its pressure with a pressure gauge. Please remember that you will find the pressure charts in our guide about AC’s gas You will quickly notice if the compressor is not spinning. This problem may happen if the electromagnetic compressor clutch is damaged. In this case, it should be replaced.
  • Low refrigerant in the air conditioner: If there is not enough refrigerant, you will see that your air conditioner lines, which are close to the engine radiator, will be freezing and become white. Since air conditioners have a closed-loop system, the pressure must not decrease when measured with a pressure gauge for an extended period. We should check the pressure for two hours. If the pressure drops and the pressure is below the standard level, there is a leak in the system. If there is no such leak, you can fill the refrigerant. You can see where the leak is by coating the lines with soap. If you see bubbles, that is where the leak is located.
  • Too much refrigerant in the air conditioner: The air conditioner radiator will be hotter than usual. The compressor will have trouble running, and it will consume more engine power. This may be caused by a human error when the refrigerant was filled. To solve this problem, you need to remove the excess refrigerant.
  • Clogged expansion valve: If, according to the pressure gauge, the pressure levels are high but the evaporator is lukewarm, the air in the cabin will not cool. This means that the refrigerant is not getting to the evaporator.
