Don't believe all the negative reviews because my family and I had a wonderful experience with this company. Our family booked a 3 day tour from Los Angeles to San Francisco and Yosemite. We have never booked from taketours.com and we have never heard of the tour company Seagull Holiday. Did some googling and was shocked at all the negative reviews they had. Little did I know that this tour would have been one of the best that I have ever been on. Some basics of the tour: - You have to pay an additional $117/person for the full experience (more info in Day 1) - There are bathroom stops every 2 hours - You have 30-45 minutes at each stop to take pictures (well enough time) - Hotel check in process is handled by your tour guide - Mainly Chinese tourists - Language: English & Chinese Each attraction/event will be identified as a number ex:(1) Day 1: Seagull picks you up from one of their pickup locations, which you can choose on the website when you book the tour. In this case, we were picked up from Hotel Irvine. Pickup time was at 7:15 and our driver was there promptly. Keep in mind that you might have to transfer once to another bus depending on what tour you booked. For example some passengers transferred to another bus because they booked a tour for the Grand Canyon. It's actually quite efficient because this way Seagull can pick up more clients at a time instead of sending multiple buses to the same location. The bus is just an average coach bus that was in good condition. We made our transfer to our final bus in Chinatown and there we met our tour guide Alex. Our family is not Chinese nor do we speak a hint of Chinese and Alex kept that in mind as he spoke English and Chinese evenly throughout the whole trip in order to keep nobody out. From Chinatown we drove to (1)Santa Barbara for some sightseeing and ate lunch at In-N-Out. After Santa Barbara we drove to the (2)17 mile drive and (3)Pebble beach. Later on Alex informed us that each person would have to pay an additional $117 in order for the trip to be worthwhile. While $117 may sound a lot, its worth every penny especially if you haven't been to SF or Yosemite ever before. For $117 you get a SF Cruise, a SF inner city tour, access to Yosemite and access to Stanford (bus parking permit.) Included in that $117 was a $8/ day service charge for the bus driver which he deserves in my opinion. Have you seen the streets of SF, or the roads in Yosemite? You should try weaving a 45 foot bus down those narrow streets if you think that service fee is a scam. From there we drove for dinner in Oakland and there were actually a lot of options (from Chinese, Sushi, Popeyes, etc.) There is also a 99 Ranch Market and an 85 Degrees bakery there so be sure to buy some breakfast since there will be no time to eat breakfast on Day 2. After dinner we checked into our hotel (Red Lion @ Oakland) and it actually wasn't that bad since they just remodeled their rooms. The hallways did smell like smoke however but it didn't bother us too much. Day 2: Day 2 is probably the most tiring one because you basically explore all of SF in 1 day. You depart at 6 AM and head straight to (1) Stanford. We got there around 7 and had about 45 minutes on our own to walk around the campus. From there we drove about an hour to the (2) Golden Gate Bridge and then to the (3) Palace of Fine Arts shortly after. You also head to the top of (4) Russian Hill/ Lombard Street (highest & steepest street in San Fran) and stop at (5) Fishermans Wharf for lunch at Darrens Cafe (Vietnamese fusion with breakfast and American options.) After lunch you take the (6) SF Cruise operated by the Red & White Fleet (lasts 1 hr 30 min). The Extensive SF City tour is next on the agenda as you head to multiple locations in SF such as (7)Cliff House, (8)Twin Peak, (9)City Hall, (10)St. Mary's Cathedral, and (11)Castro Street. After all that you drive 2 hours Clarion Inn Conference Center in Modesto. This is the reason why I'm knocking off 1 star, simply because this hotel is straight up garbage. Sheets were clean and bed was comfy but that was about it. Many dinner options around there with In N Out, Chinese Food, Outback Steakhouse, and a couple others if you're willing to walk a block. Call time was at 6:30 AM the next day. Day 3: Clarion offers a complementary intercontinental breakfast but don't expect too much as you're just offered toast, muffins, or cereal. You depart at 6:30 to Yosemite which was around a 3 hour drive. At Yosemite they take you to (1) El Capitan,(2) Yosemite Falls & Lower Yosemite Falls, (3) Half Dome, and (4) Tunnel View (best view of Yosemite.) Overall you spend about 2-3 hours in Yosemite itself and that is well enough time to see everything Yosemite is known for. After all that you drive back to LA. Overall this is a great tour, I would highly recommend it if you have never been to SF or Yosemite before. Be on the lookout for tour guide Alex or Bus # 338.

Idiot bus driver threw the bus across 3 lanes of traffic going 70 mph on the freeway, almost hit multiple cars in the process, and drove onto the median, shoulder, and some dirt. Dangerous, risks the safety of everyone on board. I'm honestly not sure if the guy even knows how to drive a bus. Presumably they need a license to operate a bus for a business, but from reading other reviews, this company has a reputation for a lot of sketchy borderline legal business practices so I wouldn't trust they can even get a licensed driver. This company will put your life at risk to make a few bucks, beware.

Very unprofessional tour guide, unfriendly and he's not explaining properly each places we go to. Its English & Chinese tour but its more on their language(chinese language). More passengers were upset because of our unfriendly tour guide. I don't recommend this.. Don't waste your money & time with Seagull Tours.. Its better to drive still.

Worst experience i have ever had. I planned terribly by going off the price. They ruined my first experience to San Francisco, this something i can never take back. This company is incredibly manipulatively and want force you to tip them.... Its a freaking fee... Call it what it is. I'm sure they do this to avoid paying taxes on it by making the tip cash only. They are so freaking cheap they wont let oyu use the bathroom on the bus because they dont want to pay for maintenance. This company is crap. Dont do it unless you are trying to find a cheap one way trip. Several times the tour conductor threatened to leave my family and I stranded on the way to San Francisco. And the worst part is the freaking idiot guiding the "tour" wad yelling into the microphone for hours at a time. I had to restrain myself from getting aggressive with him several times. I wish i had one positive thing i could say but it does not exist.

Photo of Shoshana S.

Terrible experience. You won't get good treatment unless you are of Chinese descent. Filled with sneaky extra purchases that will surprise you mid travel. Be clear that the initial fee is not the end of it... be prepared to be asked a minimum of 200 dollars more if you actually want to do anything on the tour. Tour guide Chester was rude and unfriendly (again only if you're not Chinese).

Listen to the negative reviews! They're all true. Our family purchased tickets for a 3 day SF bay area tour and little did we know what we were getting ourselves into. The fun started when we were instructed to go to a specific parking lot to wait for a "tour bus" at 7am on the day of. We waited like an hour for a tour bus which turns out to be a minivan that will take us to the REAL tour bus. The driver of this minivan was rude, spoke little english, and yelled at us for just waiting in our car and not coming out and board his minivan so he could take us to the tour bus. Umm excuse me? Your company stated we will be going on a tour bus not a minivan. Secondly, there were a few other cars in the parking lot and we were the only tourists going on the seagull tour so how the heck are we supposed to know to approach a random minivan? Third, he said he saw us wait in our car for a long time and it wasted his time. Did it occur to this idiot to approach us and say he's from seagull and will take us to the real tour bus? The tour itself was such a complete rip off. They will try to make you pay out of pocket for almost everything. They took us to Stanford University as a tour destination and charged $15/person. When the heck do you have to pay to stop at Stanford? Will this go towards my tuition or application at Stanford? If it werent for my bladder almost exploding, I wouldve just sat on the bus. Oh, the restroom on the bus is "out of order" they say. They practically use Stanford as a restroom stop and disguise it as part of their tour and charged people for it. Ridiculous! While at Monterey, my parents were invited to board a train by the train operator. It was a courtesy ride on behalf of the train operator. When my parents got off, our tour guide came over and said that we owed him $80, for two tickets on the train. We were all confused and refused to pay. He got really angry and said he bought us two tickets and that's why my parents were on that train. He started yelling and pulling a fit, so I ran and asked the train operator again and he said no, it was a courtesy ride, He invited so they are not charging. I came back to tell my parents this and the tour guide still demanded the money. If the train operator and people running the train dont want to charge us, why is a tour guide charging us? Does seagull holiday own trains too? We finally told him, fine show us the tickets or ticket stub. He said fine and never returned with one. Lying fool. The rest of the tour was a repeat of these shenanigans. Everywhere they took us, it's this is extra so here's the charge. Seemed like everything is extra. The tour tickets should just be renamed "overpriced charge for gas" because that's all that it seemed to cover that we werent demanded to pay out of pocket for. Seagull is an untrustworthy, cheating, and lying company that practically steals money from paying tourists. Book your tours elsewhere. Better yet, use that money and drive yourself.

Our tour guide told us that Tom Cruise and Madonna are practising Mormons. Do I need to say more? My friend and I took a 7-day Yellowstone, Grand Canyon West, Lake Powell and Bryce Canyon tour from Las Vegas. The website, Take Tours, gave us the impression that the tour would have a mix of English-speaking and Chinese-speaking people and that the tour would be a nine-to-five day thing. So wrong. There were 95% Chinese people from mainland China; the tour guide spoke Mandarin most of the time; and the tour had very early morning start times and would end very late in the evening. The tour was arranged in a way that allowed for additional passenger pick-ups and drop-offs at Salt Lake City, Utah, where there weren't much to see but we all had to spend two nights during the tour after enduring many hours on the bus. The website, did not mention the name, Seagull Tour, so we did not have the benefit of having read Yelp reviews on this company. Overall, this was a BOOT CAMP + 7-DAY MANDARIN INTENSIVE. We got to pass by and stayed at many American states: Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Arizona, but we had an extremely exhausting "vacation" filled with long line-ups at the washrooms, Chinese buffets, designated convenience stores and rushed 20-min photo ops at tourist sites. I even got sick from fatigue during the tour. The tour did cover a lot of major tourist attractions in a short period of time. The hotels were clean and nice except for the hotel we stayed at on our first night. Another night, they put us, non-smokers, in a smoking room, which had cigarette butts all over the carpet. When we called the hotel to get a non-smoking room, they informed us that there would be extra charges. All of these hotels were few hours drive from tourist attractions. I'd have had a better experience if the hotels were close by so we wouldn't have had to spend so much time siting on the bus. You spend many hours, often UP TO 6 HOURS OR MORE PER DAY sitting on the tour bus. The bus would fit about 55 people per bus (explaining long line-ups at the washrooms) and there may be another bus that is travelling about half an hour behind your bus, so about 100 people may end up eating at the same designated restaurants (all low-quality Chinese buffets for lunch and dinner). ***Watch out for: -Early morning starts: 4:50, 5:30, 6:00 am departure times. -Late dismissal: by the time that we got to our hotel room, it would be after 8 or 9 pm. -No free time: the only time you'd get some would be on the bus. -About 6 hours or more per day, are spent sitting on the tour bus. Hotels are located few hour drive away from the tourist attractions. -Extra mandatory costs: these fees included entrance to Grand Canyon West ($80), a boat tour on Lake Powell that was not on the itinerary ($50), admission to all parks ($50), service charges ($56; $8 per day) and tips (we didn't understand what was going on but a Chinese tourist translated to us that the tour guide bluntly told them to pay tips so we also paid tips for their "service"). All these fees are paid in cash. They probably make a lot of money off each tourist given they can arrange a group rate pricing. -Since the tour guide collects the extra fees in cash, make sure to have enough cash for optional activities. -If you like to have your picture taken at major tourist sites, it is going to be quite a challenge with many Chinese tourists swarming in your photos. It's going to be chaos! Some tourists would step in to your picture no problem and others would not take their turns in taking photos. Our tour guide had to yell at one Chinese family that kept butting in other people's photos, lol. ***Good for: -Tourists who want to visit all the major tourist attractions, if a Mormon church or Utah State Capitol counts as a tourist attraction, in a short period of time. -Tourists who do not speak English. -Tourists who wanna pick up some Mandarin. -Wanna become a morning person? -Troopers. ***Not recommended for: -Tourists who are physically disabled or whose physical ability would not allow them to follow the packed schedules. Sitting on the tour bus for 7 days is too much; perhaps, a couple of days may be doable. -Tourists who do not speak Chinese (Mandarin). -Tourists who do not like waking up super early then getting dismissed super late on their vacation. -Tourists who do not like not getting enough free time during their vacation. -Tourists who want to learn about the places they are visiting and take time in exploring.

A bit late for the review since I went on a holiday to Vegas and Grand Canyon during Christmas holidays. But felt that I MUST write a review because I had the absolute worst experience EVER. As a Chinese, at least I understand the guide, but I find their pricing to be absolutely dishonest. Basically, they charged us 80 dollars for the ticket to Grand Canyon West. Normally this would have included the Skywalk, but GUESS WHAT? There was no Skywalk. They left out the ticket for the Skywalk, and IT WAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE PART OF THE 80 DOLLAR PACKAGE! They made 35 dollars for every person who went to Grand Canyon West. When we confronted the guide about it, he said it was for transportation (HAHAHA) but couldn't explain why those who went to Grand Canyon South, which was 3 HOURS FARTHER, only paid an extra 5 dollars for transport. THEN the guide had the audacity to ask us for mandatory tips. DON'T RECOMMEND AT ALL!

I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone that I like! Overall we had a terrible experience. HOTEL - 1 star hotel FOOD - Whatever you do, DO NOT eat at the buffets your tour guide take you. The food is absolutely nasty (I wouldn't feed them to my dog) considering they charge $13-$15/person. ACTIVITY - Too much driving, too little time exploring. We would be on the bus for hours, but only allotted 45'-1hour exploring the National Parks. VEGAS SHOWS - Book your own instead of through the tour company, you'll save at least 40%.

Photo of May Zhee L.

WORST TOUR EVER. I was on their Vegas-SF-LA tour. This was the worst holiday experience I've ever had, and I've been on many tours around the world. I would NEVER recommend this to anyone (not even my worst enemy...maybe). Where do I even start? They are basically a tour company that takes your money and gives you less than what you've paid for. Accommodation: They stick you in shitty hotels that are so far from the city so you can't ever go anywhere on your own and you can only follow their shitty ass tour. We ended up staying in PLEASANTON which is an hour and a half away from San Francisco. I usually have no problems with shitty hotels, since I value my experience outside accommodation more, but I had no experience because I was stuck in my shitty hotel after the tour was done. You also switch hotels EVERYDAY which means you need to be constantly packing. Which brings me to my next point... The "tours" themselves: Suck. They have ridiculous departure times, earliest being 5am, latest being 6.30am. This means I would have to wake up at 4 or earlier, esp since I also needed to pack. One of our stops in our "San Francisco tour" was Stanford University (wtf?). We drove from Pleasanton to STANFORD instead of to SF, and then stopped there for 20 minutes. It took us ten minutes to walk to and back from ONE spot on the campus. We saw nothing. This is another one of their tactics to make you spend all your time traveling on the bus instead of doing actual things that will cost them money. This was pretty much most of the tour. They take you to shitty places (Solvang? Really?), let you stop for 10-20 minutes, and then you get back on the bus. We didn't even visit a museum or stop at any place for more than an hour for me to absorb anything about San Francisco. If you're on this Vegas-SF-LA tour we also did this stupid thing where we stopped at LA overnight from Vegas on our way to SF. WHY couldn't we have just stopped in LA, did the tour here, and then move on to SF tour? Answer: They want us to spend all our time traveling so they don't have to spend actual money on us. Tour guide: Ours for the SF leg of the tour was named Eric and boy did he suck. If you don't understand English, DON'T BOTHER WITH THESE TOURS. They claim to be bilingual but they're really not. I was lucky to understand a little Chinese but Eric pretty much did not explain anything in English properly. He butchered all the facts about California (Reagan, to him, was the 20th President of the United States) and he referred to the LGBT community in San Francisco as "homosexuals". He was also extremely rude to my family, accusing us of being late constantly (when there were other people who were late more than once too) and confronting my mom rudely in front of everyone in the bus. Learn some manners, please. Time: Eric was super strict about time, which I understand being on tours, but most of the time it was his fault for our being late. I will elaborate. Wherever we went, there were ten other tour buses filled with Chinese tourists (as ours were). This means for anything like bathroom breaks and meals, we had to wait extra long. Even to take photos we couldn't do it without ten people in the background (we were at a church in San Francisco and my picture of these bronze sculptures that depicted the birth of Jesus had a Chinese tourist in it). It was pretty annoying. He would bring us to a place that had one or two restaurant, and there would be ten buses of tourists there, and he gave us an hour to order, eat our food and pay?? And use the bathroom?? That was illogical and us being a family of five naturally needed a little bit more time. Eric lacked common sense, it seems. Meals: Oh dear God again if you're not Chinese DO NOT GO ON THESE TOURS. The only places they would stop for meals are cheap Asian restaurants, usually buffet places. Which is fine once or twice, but they did this EVERY TIME. Food, to me, is a big part of my experience in a place and I got none of this with this tour. I understand not spending much for food, but the price we paid for the stupid Asian buffets would have cost just as much as a decent restaurant that would have let us experience the place. Except for SF, where we stopped by the Fisherman's Wharf for lunch and I got to order clam chowder, all of our meals were shit. Company: I pretty much felt like I was in China or Asia the whole time I was here. We had zero interaction with locals and wherever I went I was with hoards of Asian tourists. This significantly degraded my experience because people around me were loud, rude, had no sense of personal space and they had no table or toilet manners. If you like this sort of tour, by all means book it. I like taking my time traveling, instead of rushed tours that don't give you the real experience of the place, on top of the utter stupidity and lack of civility of the tour company.

Seagull Satirikon

Review: The Seagull, Satirikon Theatre, Moscow (Stage Russia)

The Seagull is one of Chekhov’s most regularly staged plays, often revived in Britain and last year seen in a film version starring Saoirse Ronan and Annette Bening. Back in the writer’s native Russia, this canonical classic has been pulled apart by director Yury Butusov and refashioned into a visually stunning, rock ‘n’ roll-style production that can be seen, with subtitles, in UK cinemas and online via Stage Russia. Much of the familiar text remains intact, with naturalistic moments that remind us of the play’s dramatic power, but these are rare in an adaptation that constantly undermines and questions Chekhov’s drama, using Brechtian-style techniques that make sure you never forget this is all artifice. Scenes that are traditionally quiet and intimate are transformed by the actors yelling their lines, while key episodes are re-played repeatedly with different actors and different directorial choices, often with comic effect. The set, designed by Alexander Shishkin, is made up of flimsy timber frames and prominent stage lighting, with illuminated dressing-room make-up tables visible on either side. As Butusov himself declaims during one of his disruptive appearances on stage mid-performance, “Here’s theatre for you!” While much of the text and all of the main characters remain, some plot details are lost or obscured, which is likely to baffle anyone unfamiliar with the play. The core story can still be detected running through the spectacle, following the fortunes of a middle-aged actress, Irina, and her family and dependents on their country estate at the end of the 19th century. As they confront the frustrations of their lives, they welcome young wannabe actor Nina who finds herself attracted to Irina’s lover, self-obsessed writer Trigorin. However, the identities of the characters and their relationships are sometimes hard to infer, not just because text has been cut but because, in another act of iconoclasm, the ages of the actors and their roles do not match: for instance, Irina is played by Polina Raykina who is clearly much younger than Timofey Tribuntsev playing her son Konstantin. They are regularly joined by a “dancing girl” who has no direct correlation in Chekhov and has no part in the plot. Realism is challenged throughout, from the avant-garde staging to performances that are often overblown, soundtracked by Faustas Latenas’s grandiose music. It is at odds with the darkness of Chekhov’s original but perfectly complements its themes around performance and theatricality. It may lack the emotive force of a more conventional production of The Seagull but, in its visual virtuosity and delightful playfulness, it is a mesmerising, unforgettable experience.

Butusov’s inventive approach to theatre can also be seen in his production of Bertolt Brecht’s The Good Person of Szechwan for Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre which is playing three performances at London’s Barbican Centre on 8 and 9 February 2019.

Watch The Seagull at  https://www.stagerussia.com/the-seagull or see it on the big screen at Pushkin House in London on 11 February 2019 followed by a Q&A with director Yury Butusov. Details at http://www.pushkinhouse.org/events/2017/10/29/the-satirikon-theatres-screening-discussion-the-seagull-by-anton-chekhov

From the start, our dream was to offer exceptional experiences that connected our travellers to incredible places while making them feel welcomed and cared for.

Today, our team consists of seasoned tour leaders with extensive travel knowledge. We are serious about client satisfaction and pay attention to every detail to give our clients luxury, convenience, and comfort.

On the one side, Seagull crafts small-group tours to the world’s finest destinations. These luxury trips include tourist highlights as well as curated, unique experiences, offering a true connection to the destination. And we often grab at those spontaneous moments of joy that make a trip exceptional! In the end, every person should be left with lifelong memories.

Seagull also offers individual travel. We are proudly associated with Club Travel, offering exciting packages around the world.

And if clients are looking for bespoke, luxury travel, our team can craft a tailored itinerary that takes care of every detail.

It would be our pleasure to make your next trip unforgettable.

See you soon

Elizabeth van Niekerk Wait

The sound of seagulls calling over the Bosphorus, the buttery warmth of naan from the tandoor, the endless plains of my beloved Serengeti, and exquisite shops in Stockholm: all of these hold a cherished place in my heart. This is why I strive to create hassle-free journeys— so that my clients can enjoy their own special moments.

I love travelling because I love discovering the tiny details that make up the essence of a place, like how bright the light is in New York, the sound of a tube train whooshing into a station, or the way fynbos smells in the Karoo. These aren’t souvenirs that you can pack in your suitcase, but they stay with you forever.
