Sturgill Simpson to release new album under a new name, embark on 2024 concert tour

tour fox theater detroit

A decade following the breakout success of his May 2014-released album "Metamodern Sounds in Country Music," Sturgill Simpson has announced not just his forthcoming eighth album — July 12's "Passage Du Desir" — under a new alias, Johnny Blue Skies, but also a 28-date North American tour.

Famously, Simpson noted he would only release five studio albums under his name. His Johnny Blue Skies debut will be released via his own independent label, High Top Mountain Records. Simpson (credited as Johnny Blue Skies) and David Ferguson co-produced songs recorded at Nashville, Tennessee's Clement House Recording Studio and London's Abbey Road Studios .

"Passage Du Desir" is currently available for pre-order at shop.sturgillsimpson.com .

The Passage du Desir is a shopping district in downtown Paris' 10th arrondissement, or district, located a 20-minute drive east of the Eiffel Tower.

In a 2021 feature for the Nashville Tennessean , part of the USA TODAY Network, Simpson noted that he idealized a career in which he was free of making records that sustained a self-branded industry as a machine.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

"To me, that sounds like prison. It's a job, you're a politician."

Instead, the past decade has seen him achieve Grammy-winning acclaim for five full-length studio albums, two COVID-19 quarantine bluegrass projects — "Cuttin' Grass Vol. 1 and Vol. 2" — and acting in film and television roles, including "The Dead Don't Die," " Queen & Slim ," " Killers of the Flower Moon ," and " The Righteous Gemstones ."

Regarding the sound that his Johnny Blue Skies debut could encompass, he offered to The Tennessean in 2021 that he would need to "(have) something to say" and be "really excited about" a "really great idea for a record."

"I'll put it this way, if I go back into the studio it'll be because I thought of the complete and total reinvention that gets me excited," Simpson said. "But it won't be my name. I'm done with that all that."

Sturgill Simpson Announces New Album, Tour; Says He Will Only Record Under the Name ‘Johnny Blue Skies' From Now On

Singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson has always done things his way, and his iconoclasm will be in full force in July when he releases an album under the nom de plume "Johnny Blue Skies" - which he's indicating will be the name that all his future albums will come out under.

But for the purposes of touring, he will remain Sturgill Simpson. Whether splitting that difference is by preference, or because major venue operators are unlikely to book shows for a major artist under a pseudonym, is unknown. But he will be hitting the road under the name Sturgill Simpson this fall, with 28 show over the course of two and a half months of shows in arenas, theaters and amphitheaters, starting with a date at L.A.'s Greek Theatre on Sept. 14.

Simpson's first album under the name is Johnny Blue Skies is the eight-track "Passage du Desir," due out July 12 on his own independent label, High Top Mountain Records.

A press release notes that "after promising to release only five studio albums under his own name," Simpson is marking "the beginning of a new era" with the name change to Johnny Blue Skies. He did not release any statements about why he's making the switch. But in a 2021 interview with Rolling Stone, Simpson did indeed vow that the album he was putting out at the time, "The Ballad of Dood and Juanita," would be his last as Sturgill Simpson. "I always said there would be five, and I wondered if I'd go back on that. But it really has cemented every step of the way how much I don't want to carry all that weight," he told the magazine at the time. "Not having to stand up there behind my name would allow me to be even more vulnerable, in a way."

The track list for the new album encompasses the songs "Swamp of Sadness," "If The Sun Never Rises Again," "Scooter Blues," "Jupiter's Faerie," "Who I Am," "Right Kind of Dream," "Mint Tea" and "One for the Road." It was produced by the artist now known as Johnny Blue Skies along with David Ferguson, with sessions taking place at Clement House Recording Studio in Nashville and Abbey Road in London.

The fall outing is being billed as the "Why Not? Tour" and is characterized as his first major tour in four years. Band members for the trek are Kevin Black (bass), Robbie Crowell (keys), Laur Joamets (guitar) and Miles Miller (drums).

Fans will need to pre-register for the tour to queue up for tickets. Registration is open now through June 10 at sturgillsimpsonlive.com for a pre-sale that begins June 12 at 10 a.m. local time. After that, a "limited number" of tickets will be reserved for a general on-sale June 14.

Tickets will be restricted from resale except through Ticketmaster's Face Value Exchange, which aims to circumvent secondary-market price increases by only allowing tickets to be resold for the original price.

Stops the Simpson tour will be making along the way include Forest Hills Stadium in New York Oct. 19 and Nashville's Bridgestone Arena Oct. 25 and .

The new concerts join the two Simpson shows that were previously booked for the coming months, both festival dates - an Outside Lands gig in the Bay area in early August that will precede the official tour opening by more than a month, and two Austin City Limits Festival appearances on successive weekends in October.

All the fall headlining shows are being billed as "an evening with Sturgill Simpson"- aka no opening act - with the exception of a Sept. 20 concert at the Gorge in Washington state that will feature Lord Huron as opener.

Historic Detroit

Every building in detroit has a story — we're here to share it, fox theatre, by dan austin of historicdetroit.org.

Designed and built for the Fox Films chain by C. Howard Crane in the Oriental style in 1928, this movie palace contained 5,041 seats and a unique mix of Egyptian, Far Eastern and Indian styles to create a movie palace like no other. It was built to replace the Fox Washington Theatre near Grand Circus Park, which was deemed too outdated and small at 1,862 seats.

The lobby is a half-block long and is six stories high. The Fox has two organs, a 4-manual 36-rank Wurlitzer in the auditorium and a 3-manual 13-rank Moller organ in the lobby.

The Fox opened Sept. 21, 1928, with the silent film "Street Angel."

Over the years, the Fox held Vaudeville, live stage, newsreels, organ concerts and 35-cent talkies. In the 1950s, the Fox held many premieres and concerts. As Detroit began to decline in the late 1960s and '70s, it later switched to kung-fu and horror films.

The Fox was beginning to become a run-down theater. It was purchased in 1987 by the Ilitch family, and went through an 18-month, $12-million restoration to return it to its original grandeur. A new multistory marquee was made to replace the badly altered original.

It reopened on Nov. 19, 1988, with a performance by Motown legend Smokey Robinson with the Count Basie Orchestra.

On June 29, 1989, the Fox Theatre was designated a National Historic Landmark.

On Jan. 12, 2006, Atanas Ilitch of Ilitch Holdings announced the addition of a tower sign on the roof of the Fox. It was completed and dedicated Jan. 30, 2006. The multistory tower features 18-foot letters spelling out "FOX" on four sides, topped off by a dodecahedron star. The sign has a computer controlled LED light system that is capable of many lighting colors to reflect anything from holidays to seasons to special events.

Today, the Fox is a successful result of preservation and restoration that could be done to many of Detroit's other buildings. The Fox holds concerts and special events, including the Rockettes and "Sesame Street Live."

Sunday tour

Designed by C. Howard Crane and built in 1928, the Detroit Fox Theatre is the culmination of flamboyant movie palace architectural design. Crane, who had designed over 250 theaters by 1928, considered the Fox his best effort. In its size, ornate decoration and mechanical systems, it was the premier example of what a movie palace could be. A 1928 Detroit Free Press  article stated, “Detroit’s Fox Theater has the largest clear span balcony in the world. The stage proper is larger than the Roxy Theater in New York, and has the largest and finest projection room and equipment of any theater in the world.” Today, the Fox holds the distinction of being the largest continually operating theater in the country.

Holding onto hope when times are tough can take an awful lot of determination, and sometimes, an awful lot of determination comes in a surprisingly small package. Little Orphan Annie has reminded generations of theatergoers that sunshine is always right around the corner, and now the best-loved musical of all time is set to return in a new production – just as you remember it and just when we need it most.

ANNIE, directed by Jenn Thompson, features the iconic book and score, written by Tony Award®-winners Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin. This celebration of family, optimism and the American spirit remains the ultimate cure for all the hard knocks life throws your way. ANNIE will play at the Fox Theatre for five performances Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5. Comerica Bank is the exclusive presenting partner of the Fox Theatre.

When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships ... until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”

From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment,  WICKED —the untold true story of the Witches of Oz—transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. “If every musical had the brains, heart, and courage of  WICKED , Broadway really would be a magical place” ( Time Magazine ).

ABOUT ICE SPICE With a sugar rush of playful sensuality and unbothered cool, Ice Spice has established herself as the music world’s latest shapeshifting superstar. Since emerging with “Munch (Feelin’ U),” in the fall of 2022, she has reconfigured the raucous energy of the Bronx to make anthems for baddies and their baddie friends—sexy theme songs that ring off in the club or an NY deli, places Ice Spice has no problem turning into her own personal dancefloor. Powered by singles like “In Ha Mood” and “Princess Diana,” as well as the deluxe edition of her Like..? EP, she’s collected more than 2.5 billion streams, multiple top 5 Hot 100 singles, and four Grammy nominations, including nods for Best New Artist, Best Rap Song, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Song Written for Visual Media. More symbolically, she’s become an emblem of the new Big Apple, a fact that isn’t lost on the media.

Writing for The New York Times, Maya Salam listed Ice Spice as the breakout pop artist of 2023, citing her “cool, confident, raw” signature sound. Meanwhile, Variety’ listed Like..? as her fourth favorite project of last year, praising her “sharpshooter flow” and her all-around versatility on the project. For their part, Billboard named Ice Spice 2023’s Rookie of the Year. It’s all part of a calculated level up at the intersection of planning, distinctive style and unfailing belief. As Rolling Stone put it, “it’s already tough to imagine we ever lived in a world without her.”

Ice Spice’s breakout really began with “Munch (Feelin’ U),” a track that quickly became a playgirl’s dancefloor bat signal. The song earned Ice Spice her first RIAA-certified Gold plaque before amassing nearly 120 million Spotify streams. After initially releasing the song and its follow-up, “Bikini Bottom,” she signed a deal with Capitol Records and 10k Projects. From there, she fortified her buzz with “In Ha Mood” and the Lil Tjay-assisted “Gangsta Boo.” Both tracks landed on her debut EP, Like..?, a critically acclaimed project that crystallized her star status.

The hits have only continued to pile up. In February 2023, Ice Spice appeared on “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2,” a PinkPantheress single that’s equal parts infectious and emotionally vulnerable. That March, it peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Then came the “Princess Diana” remix with her idol Nicki Minaj. All of that was before she guested on Taylor Swift’s 2023 single, “Karma,” which hit No. 2 on the Hot 100. Ice Spice parlayed that popularity surge into 12 performances as Doja Cat’s opening act for The Scarlet Tour. It was her first time performing in arenas, which has set her up for even bigger stages, like Coachella, which she’ll hit in April 2024.

Her musical impact has only made her a ubiquitous cultural force. Last year, she appeared as the star of Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS campaign, with her fly everygirl persona making her a perfect fit for an emerging fashion powerhouse. That summer, she teamed up with Nicki Minaj again for “Barbie World,” a single that belonged to the Barbie soundtrack. A flurry of effervescent pop, the track peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 chart. She also appeared alongside Ben Affleck for a Dunkin’ commercial introducing her MUNCHKIN Drink, a frozen treat named after her dedicated fan base. Malleable enough to oscillate among brands, genres, and fans, it’s no surprise that Google announced Ice Spice as the second-most searched musician of 2023. Her level-up isn’t stopping anytime soon. With her debut album on the way, Ice Spice plans to continue to make varied soundscapes her playground.
