To install, run, and build with this repository,

• Clone the repository locally with
• Visit chrome://extensions in your browser.
• Enable developer mode by toggling the switch in the upper right corner of the viewport.
• Click the "Load upacked" button in the header.
• When prompted to open a file, select the root directory of this repository.

To use Better Canvas, select your browser below to install the extension.

• Once the extension is installed, navigate to your institution's Canvas homepage.
• To edit the available options, click on the "Extensions" button in the upper right corner of the viewport.
• A menu will appear with configuration options for your Canvas homepage.

Add a new feature

To add a new feature, please follow these guidelines.

Note: I will probably make this automated in the future but it's a bit of work right now.

• Should be a unqiue one/two word storage identifier to indicate its status. (ie "dark_mode" or "dashboard_grades")
• If it has sub options (options that are specific to the main feature) these will also each need a unique identifier.
• All options are synced and have a 8kb storage limit, so if your feature needs more than this please contact me.

Changes to html/popup.html

• Add the appropriate HTML into this file. The corresponding id and name (see below) should be the identifier.
• If it has no sub options, it should be put in the same container as the other options with no sub options:
• If it does have sub options it becomes it's own container:

Changes to js/popup.js

• Add the main identifier into the syncedSwitches array.
• Add these identifiers to the array found under the comment that says //checkboxes .

Changes to js/background.js

• Add all identifiers into the syncedOptions array.
• Preferably this value should be false for booleans or "" for strings ( null can also be used if Canvas has a default for this option already)

Changes to js/content.js

• There should be a function(s) included in the this file that does the work. The name should clearly indicate it's purpose.
• Under applyOptionsChanges() , add a switch case to call this function when the menu toggle is changed.
• If the function changes any aspect of the dashboard, it should be put inside checkDashboardReady() .
• If the function only adds css, it should be added to applyAestheticChanges() , and in this case should not be a separate function, instead add the css to the existing styles found in this function.
• Anything else should be put under startExtension() and should be placed no higher than the checkDashboardReady function found here.

Add a new theme

To add a new theme, please follow these guidelines.

You can export a theme using the export tool in the menu and sending an email to me, or you can merge it here after doing the following:

• Go to the Themes tab and export dark mode, card images, card colors, and custom font. - The only on/off toggles that need be included are disable_color_overlay and gradient_cards . Any other toggles aren't necessary, so you should manually add these keys and the appropriate values in with the export code.
• Pick a unique id for the theme, doesn't matter how long this is.
• Make sure it follows this format: "theme-<id>: { "exports": {"..."}, "preview": "..." }
• For the preivew, try to pick the smallest image size from the card images (under ~50kb is perfect), or you can find a smaller display image that isn't included in the card images.
• Add the following under all the other theme buttons:
• The theme name should be one/two words so it doesn't take up too much space.

One of the handiest types of software in anyone’s quiver is the browser extension: those cool little applets that let your browser do what you want it to do. And one of the nicest things about iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 is that you can now add extensions to the Safari browser. Even though this is a new feature that launched with the latest iOS version, there are already a number of useful extensions available for you to add.

What follows is a rundown on how to add extensions to your Safari app — while we’ve illustrated the process using an iPhone, you can follow the same basic directions with an iPad. We’ve also included a sampling of some extensions you can try.

How to add extensions

• Tap on the Settings app.
• Scroll down to and select Safari > Extensions.
• Any extensions that you’ve already installed will be listed here. Tap on “More Extensions” if you’d like to see what’s available in the App Store. (You can also simply go to the App Store and search on “Safari Extensions.”)

• Once you’ve installed your first extension, you’ll see a little “puzzle piece” icon on the left side of Safari’s address bar. Tap that, and the menu that pops up will include your current extensions plus a “Manage Extensions” selection, which lets you toggle your extensions on and off.

Some extensions to try

This is a small sampling of some of the extensions that you can now access via the App Store. While there are not many extensions yet available (compared to the number of extensions for, say, Chrome), it’s a pretty safe bet that there will be lots more to come over the next few months.

Amplosion ($2.99)

AMP, which is short for “Accelerated Mobile Pages,” is a web format created by Google to optimize search results for mobile browsers. However, if you’d rather not have Google tweaking the webpages you upload, you can use Amplosion to redirect the AMP links that show up in search results into normal mobile links.

Noir ($2.99)

When you’re browsing at night and you’ve set your iPhone or iPad to dark mode, you will often hit a website that is bright enough to make your eyes water. Noir allows you to set a dark mode for all the websites you visit.

1Password (subscription needed)

1Password is a well-known and respected password manager . If you’re a 1Password user, there’s no question that you’re going to want to add this one to your mobile Safari app.

Super Agent for Safari (free)

This handy extension automatically fills out a website’s cookie consent forms based on your preferences, which can save you a lot of time and irritation.

Web Inspector (free)

Something for developers: an app that lets you inspect the HTML coding of a website, modify it, debug it, and perform other essential tasks.

Canvas officially works on all of the latest releases of Chrome, Safari, Firefox  and Edge, but, from time to time, issues do arise.

Which browsers does Canvas support?  in the Canvas Community is updated regularly with the latest supported browsers. This site will also check your browser and let you know if it is supported. This site also includes detailed troubleshooting instructions. We recommend having the latest version of at least two browsers installed on your computer. For Canvas, Chrome should be one of those browsers. 

Known issues

Safari 13.1 and later issues.

Safari 13.1 and later versions contain an update that may cause issues with downloading files, displaying images, and playing chat alerts in Canvas. Canvas engineers are currently working on a solution for this issue. 

Safari Issue with Student Turnitin Submissions

If students attempting to submit a Turnitin assignment are prompted to enter their username and password, they should switch browsers from Safari to Chrome or Firefox.  Turnitin requires the use of browser cookies and some versions of Safari may not be set up correctly.  We recommend that students choose a different browser.

Safari Issue with Qwickly Attendance

Safari does not allow the secondary authentication within Canvas that is needed to authorize Qwickly.  We recommend that students and faculty choose a different browser.

Get extensions to customize Safari on Mac

You can install Safari extensions to customize the way your browser works. For example, extensions can help you display social media and news buttons, block content on websites, give you access to features from other apps, and more.

Tip: The Mac App Store is the safest and easiest way to discover and install extensions. The extensions are reviewed by Apple, and they update automatically when Automatic Updates is selected in App Store settings.

When you find one you want, click the button that shows Get or the price, then click the button again to install or buy the extension.

Manage your extensions

Do any of the following:

Turn an extension on or off: Select or deselect the extension’s checkbox.

Note: You get a warning if you turn on an extension that slows down browsing.

Use extensions on your other Apple devices: Select “Share across devices.”

Extensions you install on another Mac are available on your current Mac, where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID , have iCloud set up for Safari , have two-factor authentication turned on, and have “Share across devices” selected in Extensions settings on the other Mac.

Extensions you install on an iPhone or iPad, that are supported on Mac, are also available on your Mac where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID, have Safari turned on in iCloud settings, and have two-factor authentication turned on.

Change an extension’s settings: Select the extension, then select or deselect settings.

Remove an extension: Select the extension, then click Uninstall. Or, delete the app that contains the extension.

Restrict an extension

Choose how much access the extension has.

Extensions may access the content of the webpages you visit. Check which extensions you’ve installed and make sure you’re familiar with what they do. See Change Extensions settings .

Installing or uninstalling extensions, and turning them on or off, may take effect immediately or after you go to a new webpage or refresh the current webpage.

Important: The first time you open Safari, you get warnings about extensions that slow down browsing or are no longer supported:

Extensions that slow down browsing: The extensions are turned off. You can turn on the extensions in Safari settings.

Developer-signed .safariextz-style (legacy) extensions: The extensions don’t load and no longer appear in Safari settings. You can’t turn them on.

If you use Safari on your Mac, then you may be familiar with extensions. These are basically add-ons for Safari that you can customize the browser with, and they enhance your overall user experience. Since Safari itself is pretty barebones to start with, having extensions can greatly improve the usability of Apple's native browser.

With iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, Apple added extensions for mobile Safari, bringing it more in line with the desktop version. But how do you go about adding and enabling them? Don't worry, we'll show you the ropes.

How to add an extension to Safari on iPhone and iPad

Before you can start using Safari extensions, you'll need apps that support the feature first. You also want to make sure that you are running iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 on your best iPhone and favorite iPad , respectively. Since this is a brand new feature, you need to be running the latest software for it to work. It won't be available with iOS/iPadOS 14 and earlier.

You can add an extension to Safari by downloading apps with Safari extensions just like any other app or game on the App Store. You can simply search for "Safari extensions" on the App Store search page, or check a simple list that Apple has with some extension apps .

For a full collection of all supported apps on the App Store, you can get to it from the Settings app.

• Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
• Scroll down and tap Safari .
• Tap Extensions .

• Scroll down and tap More Extensions . This takes you to the App Store with all apps that support extensions.
• Tap Get (Free) or $X.XX on the apps with Safari extensions that you want to use.

• Download or purchase the app like you would with any other app or game.

How to enable an extension in Safari on iPhone and iPad

Once you have your apps with Safari extensions, you need to make sure that they are enabled before they can start working. There are two ways to go about this: from Settings, or directly in Safari.

To do this from Settings :

• Under the Allow These Extensions area, tap on the extension you want to enable.
• Turn the toggle to ON (green) if you want to enable the extension.

• Repeat steps 1-5 for all extensions you want to enable.

To do this from Safari :

• Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
• Tap the Reader/Extensions button in the toolbar . It looks like "AA" with a puzzle piece next to it.

• In the menu that pops up, tap Manage Extensions .
• Turn the toggle to ON (green) for any extension you want to use.
• Optionally, to disable an extension, just make sure the toggle is OFF (gray).

Safari 13.1 Cross-site Tracking & Canvas

There have been some updates to Safari that could cause access issues for Canvas and for third party tools (LTIs) in Canvas. With the recent updates to Safari (version 13.1+), the browser has started taking a strict stance on cross-site tracking (either completely on or completely off). In many browsers you can set the default setting and specify sites that are exceptions to the rule. Cross-site tracking is used to create cookies that Canvas then uses to authenticate users for third-party tools such as Panopto.

Some Safari users have reported errors when trying to access third party tools in Canvas like “we were unable to sign you in because your browser is not accepting cookies.” or “Web Login Service- Stale Web Request.” when trying to access to Canvas.

While using Safari 13.1+ to access Canvas, users may experience a similar issue in tools that use third-party cookies for authentication. Over the past week approximately 30% of our users access Canvas with Safari and ~8% are using version 13.1 or greater. We are still looking into how to resolve this update and will keep you updated on the status of this issue.

We recommend holding off on any iOS update that would update Safari to this newer version until a solution is confirmed. You can also use a different browser to access third party tools in Canvas like Google Chrome or Firefox. If you are already using Safari 13.1+ and do not want to use another browser you will have to enable cross-site tracking for all sites.

Thank you for enrolling in Master Gardener Core Training offered by University of Missouri Extension. Everyone who assisted in the development of this course hopes your learning experience will be meaningful and enlightening. Please review the following introduction to the course before beginning chapter one.

The manual for this course is the Missouri Master Gardener Manual .  You can download this manual for free to your computer or to print as a PDF, chapter by chapter. There are 14 chapters in all, MG1-MG14, listed under chapters. If you prefer a hardcopy that is prepared for you and shipped to your address, click the Add to Cart button at the top right of the page and complete your order at an additional cost. 

Course Objectives:

• To understand the mission of the Missouri Master Gardener Program and how it functions.
• To acquire a working knowledge of the fundamental principles of plant growth and development.
• To apply concepts of plant growth and development to everyday situations and uses in horticulture.
• To learn basic terminology associated with the art and science of horticulture.
• To gain an appreciation of horticulture as a life-long pursuit.

Master Gardener online core training is a semester-long course organized by weekly learning modules.  The scheduling of the course coincides with the University of Missouri’s fall and spring semesters.  The course is offered by the Extension Division of the University of Missouri and does not carry official University course credit. 

  Weekly Expectations

Weekly activities.

Each week, you will explore one chapter of the Master Gardener Core Manual .  These chapters have been organized into educational modules to facilitate learning.  Each chapter includes:     

• Unit objectives
• Online presentations - (Each video is close-captioned with an audio transcript available for download, located at the bottom of the video player screen.)
• Web resources
• An online discussion

Different instructors, each with expertise in the area of their presentation, will present the material in the form of narrated PowerPoint presentations. 

The course calendar includes the schedule for the entire course. Basically, one chapter will be covered each week over a 15-week period. A week starts on Sunday morning at 12:01 a.m. and ends the following Saturday night at 11:59 p.m.  Please try to stay on schedule. This will make the class material and the online discussion more meaningful for you.

There are two types of students taking this class:

Master Gardener Trainees. 

These are individuals educating themselves to volunteer as University of Missouri Extension Master Gardeners.  The requirements for a Master Gardener are to complete the activities in each chapter including answering quiz questions at the conclusion of each chapter.  Additional information about quizzes is outlined below under “Features of the Class”.  Each chapter also includes discussion questions that each student should post a response to.  It is important that each student take time to view other student responses and provide feedback or ask questions to facilitate further discussion.

A cumulative (overall) score of 70 percent on chapter quizzes is required in order to pass this course. Additionally, Master Gardener Trainees must complete the required number of volunteer hours (outlined in Chapter One) in order to become a Certified Master Gardener. At the beginning of the course, your name and contact information will be given to the Extension Specialist responsible for Master Gardener programming in your area.  It is your responsibility to contact them if you are interested in becoming a master gardener.  They will help you to identify volunteer opportunities and show you how to report those hours on the University’s Master Gardener reporting web page.

After completing both the online training course and the required volunteer hours you will be issued a certificate designating you as a Certified Master Gardener as well as a Master Gardener name badge.

Private individuals

Additionally, there are private individuals and/or industry professionals taking this course who simply wish to advance their knowledge of horticulture without becoming Certified Master Gardeners. These students must complete the activities in each chapter including taking the quiz at the end of each chapter. Each chapter also includes discussion questions that each student should post a response to.  Take time to view other student responses and provide feedback or ask questions to facilitate further discussion.  Upon completing the course with an average quiz score of 70 percent overall, these individuals will receive a certificate of completion. Volunteer hours are not required for these individuals since they have no intent to become Certified Master Gardeners.

Presentations

Each of the 14 chapters of the core manual are divided into learning modules. Modules contain narrated, pre-recorded presentations delivered by qualified, experienced specialists. Brief biographies of the presenters can be found under the link, "Meet the Specialists” . It should be your goal as a student to complete one chapter every week for a total of 14 weeks. This will help make the online chats more meaningful for everyone. While you may go back at any time to review a chapter, you will not be able to work in advance of the current week of the course . 

As previously mentioned, there is a quiz that is to be taken upon completing the learning modules of each chapter. Each quiz is worth ten points, "open book” and may be taken twice if your first attempt does not result in a satisfactory score. You are encouraged to use the presentations, your core manual, the internet, and any other resource (other than a person) as you take the quizzes. A combined average of 70 percent over the 14 chapters presented is needed to pass the course. Individuals failing to achieve 70 percent must re-enroll in the course, preferably the next time it is offered.

You may view your grade progress at any time throughout the course. Select Grades from the course navigation menu at left.  A page will open showing a Course total and two grading categories. The first category is the Volunteer agreement form only and is marked as "Unsubmitted" or "Form received". It has no scoring value but is required in order to complete the course.

The second category aggregates your quiz scores over all 14 quizzes. It displays an ongoing score that changes as you complete each chapter's quiz. You must average 70% over all 14 quizzes before successfully completing the scored category of the course. 

 Instructors

David Trinklein is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Plant Sciences and State Floriculture Specialist in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at the University of Missouri. His appointment includes both teaching and extension responsibilities. He teaches courses in greenhouse management, herbaceous ornamental plants, high tunnel vegetable production, and undergraduate seminar. His extension responsibilities include greenhouse management and the Missouri Master Gardener Program. His research interests include high tunnel technology and sustainable production.

Sarah is a Regional Faculty Director for University of Missouri Extension, responsible for 18 counties in southeast Missouri.  She has worked in the horticulture industry for over 30 years as an educator, landscaper or in commercial tree production.  Her responsibilities with extension have included working with commercial fruit and vegetable growers, general ornamental horticulture, integrated pest management, organic gardening, food safety training, soil fertility and conservation, and insect or disease identification.

  Discussions

The online written discussion is a required portion of the learning environment for students enrolled in this class. Each week instructors will ask questions related to the material and students will reply with a written answer, contributing to a continuous conversation that will provide experiential learning.  Students may also post new questions about class materials using this format and check responses from fellow classmates and instructors.  Instructors keep up with the discussion to ensure information is headed in a productive direction.  This discussion is part of the weekly module of study.  Each student should respond and check the current discussion each week.  The first discussion, the icebreaker, will introduce you to the format.  The purpose of this discussion is to get to know each other. 

For a successful online course experience, clear, thoughtful communication is essential. Discussion forums and course communications are important venues for exchanging ideas and promoting learning. Your instructor and fellow participants wish to foster a safe and inclusive online learning environment. Constructive criticism and questions are encouraged; however, you will be expected to remain professional and courteous in all of your posts. You are encouraged to comment, question or critique an idea, but you are not to attack an individual .

Our differences, some of which are outlined in the University of Missouri's nondiscrimination statement , will add richness to this learning experience. Please consider that sarcasm and humor can be misconstrued in online interactions and generate unintended disruptions. Working as a community of learners, we can build a polite and respectful course atmosphere. The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Out of the Centre

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
