Millennia ago, the Talosians were engaged in a war so devastating that it rendered the surface of Talos IV uninhabitable. The survivors retreated underground, where they concentrated on developing their mental abilities, to the extreme that, while they became extremely advanced telepaths , other skills, such as the maintenance of the machines left behind by their ancestors, had atrophied. By the twenty-third century, the planet's surface was only just beginning to support life once again. [1]

In 2236 , the S.S. Columbia disappeared after checking in near the Talos Star Group , where it crashed on Talos IV. Only one member of the expedition, Vina , survived, and while the Talosians were able to repair her body's injuries, they were unfamiliar with Human anatomy, and she was left disfigured. Nearly twenty years later, in 2254 , the Talosians lured the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 to Talos IV. The Talos Star Group had never been explored, and the Federation had no ships or colonies that far out at the time. The Talosians captured Captain Pike , hoping to use him and Vina as breeding stock to help repopulate their world. Their plan failed when they realized that Humans were too aggressive a species for their needs. They let Pike and the Enterprise go, but Vina chose to stay behind. [1]

In 2254, Talos IV, a Class M world, had an Oxygen - Nitrogen atmosphere that, according to Enterprise science officer Lieutenant Spock , was "[h]eavy with inert elements, but well within safety limits; Gravity 0.9 g ; barren surface with little vegetation." One blue-leafed plant caused a high-pitched humming noise from its vibrations, which had a pleasant effect on humanoids when touched, even eliciting a smile from Spock. According to Captain Pike, Earth was "in the stellar group at the other end of this galaxy." [1]

Why Star Trek: Discovery going back to Talos IV is totally nuts and utterly classic

talosian star trek

Credit: CBS

The opening monologues of both the original  Star Trek and The Next Generation  mention the idea of exploring “strange new worlds.” But what was the first alien planet the USS Enterprise ever visited? Well, in terms of when Trek stories were written, the very first alien planet was Talos IV, first visited in 1965 pilot episode “The Cage,” and then again in the classic 1966 two-parter, “The Menagerie.” And now, in the newest  Star Trek: Discovery   episode, “Light and Shadows,” the Trek franchise is going back to Talos IV for the third time, but for Spock, it’s actually only the second time. Here’s why the Talos IV thing is a big deal, and why it’s also ... fascinating.

**SPOILER WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Discovery , Season 2, Episode 7, “Light and Shadows.”**

At the very end of the latest episode, after Michael Burnham has rescued Spock and stolen a shuttlecraft, she determines that the numbers Spock has been repeating are actually coordinates to a planet. After she puts the coordinates into the computer, the ship tells her that this is the location of Talos IV. Startled, Michael asks, “Where are you taking us, Spock?”

At this point in Trek history, it makes sense that Michael wouldn’t know about Talos IV, and that’s because all knowledge of the planet is theoretically totally classified. In terms of the fictional chronology, Pike and the Enterprise visited Talos IV in “The Cage,” which happened in 2254, three years prior to 2257, which is when Discovery is happening right now. By 2267, during the original series, Talos IV will be totally off-limits for any spaceship, because, presumably, the mind-powers of the Talosians who live there are just too damn strong. In “The Cage,” we learn that the Talosians are such strong telepaths that they can actually make people hallucinate all sorts of things. Imagine what Thanos can do with the Mind Stone in Avengers: Infinity Wa r; the Talosians are like that, only like times a hundred. In “The Cage” they convince the crew of the Enterprise that an entire encampment of spaceship crash survivors is on the planet, when, in fact, no one is there at all.

In “The Menagerie” Spock hijacks the Enterprise t o take the hopelessly crippled Captain Pike back to Talos IV because he knows the Talosians will likely take care of Pike and allow him to live in a world of illusion where he can imagine that his body functions again. However, all of this stuff is in Discovery’ s future. Right now, as far as we know, Talos IV is where Captain Pike’s story eventually ends. According to Anson Mount, Discovery is showing us “Act II Pike,” meaning “The Cage” is Act I and “The Menagerie” is Act III. But the fact that Spock is going to Talos IV in Discovery right now is interesting, because it means something else — outside of “The Cage” and “The Menagerie” — must happen with the Talosians to make Starfleet super-afraid of the planet.

In the original series episode “The Menagerie,” Commodore Mendez tells Captain Kirk that visiting Talos IV is the only way Starfleet will give anyone the death penalty. Weirdly, Mendez cryptically says, “Not even this report explains why.” Prior to Discovery, the assumption most viewers made was simply that the report didn’t include all the crazy mind-control stuff from “The Cage.” But now that Spock is going to Talos IV with Burnham, it seems like Discovery  is poised to explain this whole death penalty thing a little bit more. And there’s another wrinkle: In “The Menagerie,” Kirk hangs out with Commodore Mendez for a long-ass time, only to find out Mendez himself is also the result of the Talosians messing with everyone’s mind.

So, if Discovery is bringing back Talos IV, that also means the series is reintroducing aliens — the Talosians — who are capable of making characters believe they are seeing things that aren’t actually there. Potentially, this could end up meaning that a few key details about this season of Discovery have, in fact, been hallucinations. Neither “The Cage” nor “The Menagerie” fully explains the range of the mind-powers of the Talosians. But, if Spock’s brain is getting messed with, and the Talosians are behind it, it’s possible they can send signals from across the galaxy.

Beyond what we saw in the original series, the Talosians have never actually appeared in any version of Star Trek again. This makes Burnham and Spock’s trip to Talos IV a kind of Trek homecoming. But it’s also a moment for revelation. Before now, we knew almost nothing about Talos IV and its history, which, depending on what happens next, could totally change Trek 's history and what we know about canon forever.

Talos IV , known as Clesik to its native Talosian civilization , was a planet located in the space of the galaxy 's Alpha Quadrant , in orbit of the Talos star group , at coordinates 7.49S 1.48E. ( TOS episode : " The Cage ", FASA RPG module : The Federation ; ST references : The Worlds of the Federation , Star Charts ; DSC episode : " Light and Shadows ")

History [ ]

The Talosian civilization once flourished on the surface and were warp drive capable half a million years prior to the 23rd century . Unfortunately, over 200,000 years before the Federation era, around 400,000 years earlier, the Talosians became combatants in a psionic combat . This cataclysmic war decimated them, and this plus a concurrent usage of nuclear weapons, made much of the planet's surface uninhabitable. They moved underground, and developed their mental skills even as their technological knowledge atrophied. ( ST reference : Star Charts ; TOS episode : " The Cage "; Last Unicorn RPG module : All Our Yesterdays: The Time Travel Sourcebook ; DTI novel : Watching the Clock )

In 2236 , the SS Columbia , a scientific survey ship from Earth , crashed on the planet. The sole survivor was a human woman named Vina . She was retrieved by the Talosians and her injuries attended to, although the Talosians' lack of knowledge of human anatomy hindered their efforts.

Talos surface

The surface of Talos IV in 2254.

In 2254 , the USS Enterprise visited Talos IV, lured there by a false distress signal. Captain Christopher Pike was kidnapped in an effort to provide Vina with a mate. Pike and the Enterprise were eventually allowed to leave. Given the extreme threat of the Talosians' powers of illusion, Starfleet issued General Order 7 , forbidding any travel to Talos IV, under penalty of death. ( TOS episodes : " The Cage ", " The Menagerie ")

Realizing that the string of numbers Spock was repeating were coordinates, Michael Burnham set course for Talos IV in 2257 to determine if that planet could unravel the reasons behind his apparent mental breakdown. ( DSC episode : " Light and Shadows ")

In 2267 , Lieutenant Commander Spock kidnapped then- Fleet Captain Pike and hijacked the Enterprise to Talos IV. Given the specific circumstances, General Order 7 was rescinded, and Pike allowed to live the remainder of his life in an illusory existence on Talos IV. ( TOS episode & Star Trek 4 novelization : The Menagerie )

In the later 23rd century , Talos remained under Federation quarantine. By reference stardate 2/2306.01 , the world had a population of less than 10 million. ( FASA RPG module : The Federation )

In 2290 , then-Captain Spock returned to Talos IV at the behest of Starfleet, in order to offer Captain Pike a new medical treatment that would allow him to return to the Federation and retain his mobility. It was during this visit that Spock met Phillip Pike , the child of Christopher and Vina. ( TOS comic : " Door in the Cage ")

In 2320 , then- Ambassador Spock was summoned again to Talos IV, where he witnessed a revitalized planet and Talosian culture, thanks to the efforts of Christopher Pike. ( TOS novel : Burning Dreams )

In 2372 , members of Starfleet Academy 's Omega Squad traveled to Talos IV when Betazoid Cadet Edam Astrun received a compulsive telepathic distress call from the Talosians, under siege by the Jem'Hadar . With the assistance of a telepathic image of Pike, the squad was able to defeat the Jem'Hadar. ( SA comics : " Return to the Forbidden Planet ", " A Prelude to War ")

In 2376 , Nog recalled Omega Squad's mission to Talos IV, when thinking of his experiences before his graduation. ( DS9 - Mission Gamma novel : Cathedral )

Sometime prior to the year 2380 , the classified nature of the Talosian species and the death penalty for visiting Talos IV were lifted by Starfleet. By this time, Starfleet had apparently developed scanning instruments that could detect the difference between reality and Talosian illusions. ( TNG novel : Q & A )

  • Trivia When Burnham first arrives on the surface and silences the singing plants by holding onto their leaves she mirrors the actions of both Pike and Spock when they first landed on the planet in The Cage (1966) .
  • Goofs When Burnham and Spock land on Talos IV the computer says the atmosphere consists of 4.6% CO2, which is lethal to Human life. So why wouldn't Burnham wear an EV suit to go out in that harsh climate? Talos IV is said to be an M-Class planet meaning it is sustainable to humanoid life which would mean that the levels of CO2 are below that amount of concentration. Clearly an error on the show runners they should have put it at .46% CO2 not 4.6%.

Captain Christopher Pike : You allowed the fight to proceed?

Saru : Well, I believe the confrontation was a necessary and unavoidable catharsis for both men.

Captain Christopher Pike : But... hardly an example of by-the-book conflict resolution.

Saru : The Starfleet manual offers no regulatory guidelines for interactions between humans with Klingons grafted to their bones and a ship's doctor returned from the dead.

5 Ways The Original '90s X-Men Series Is Better Than X-Men '97

House of the dragon hasn't lived up to game of thrones, captain america: brave new world behind-the-scenes pic offers glimpse at new character.

The Star Trek franchise has a long, proud history of strange and powerful humanoid aliens that make up its massive universe. With every new face or unique appearance comes a history of fascinating details, both in the narrative and in the real world.

The Talosians are, technically, the first species of aliens to be named in any Star Trek media. Though Spock is the first alien depicted, the name of his species is withheld for the first few episodes. The first appearance of the Talosians takes place in the original 1965 pilot of the original series, setting the tone for almost sixty years of classic sci-fi adventure to follow.

RELATED: Star Trek: How Tribbles Became An Icon Of The Franchise

The denizens of Talos IV are humanoids with bulbous protruding heads. Their appearance, like that of many Star Trek aliens , efficiently communicates what they're about. The Talosians are powerful psychics, capable of creating fabulous illusions with only their minds. They are extremely intelligent and capable beings, who once commanded a planet rich with technological advancement and a well-functioning society. The Talosians had access to warp technology, the mark of a particularly advanced civilization. Things seemed to be going well, at least at one point. Tragically, Talosian civilization was cut short as a result of a catastrophic nuclear war . Their numbers were reduced to single digits and their civilization never recovered. Those that did survive moved underground, living in squalor to avoid the nightmarish wasteland their war left behind. But, while hiding out beneath Talos IV's surface, a new problem emerged.

The remaining Talosians living underground lost all knowledge of technology that they once had. Their concern for the rest of the universe grew dim, and they stopped trying to materially improve their conditions. The only thing that did improve was their psychic capabilities . While sheltered underground, their mental capabilities grew ever stronger, and their ability to create and live within psychic constructs became second nature. Living within illusions became addictive, leading Talosians to spend every waking moment in their constructed realities. After untold millennia spent in a collective consensual hallucination, their tolerance began to outgrow their capabilities. Like a drug addiction, their fix was slowly losing potency and the lack of mental stimulation threatened to drive them to madness. With few other options, the Talosians turned to capturing wayward space travelers and forcing them to participate as performers in the grand illusion.

The Talosians' first appearance is in the unaired pilot episode "The Cage," which was only released decades after the series officially began. That episode was considered too cerebral and lacking in action, so it didn't get to be the official starting point of the franchise. The plot introduces then-captain of the Enterprise, Christopher Pike , as he leads the Star Fleet crew to landfall on Talos IV. Once there, Pike meets a beautiful woman named Vina, who leads the captain into a trap. Pike finds himself captured by the Talosians with an unusual goal in mind: to marry him off to Vina. The Talosians seek a steady supply of human puppets to use in their ongoing illusions, and to that end, try to seduce Pike and keep him as breeding stock. Their plan falls apart, however, when Pike resists their myriad temptations. Despite multiple illusory attempts to draw Pike into their clutches, Pike demands freedom at every turn.

The Talosians, weirdly, were more than willing to part with Pike. The alien race bore him no ill will, happy to learn that human beings would fight back against captivity, even in the best possible conditions. This narrative outlined the fundamental difference between the Talosians and mankind: the former retreats into the imagined, while the latter takes the best and worst of reality as it is. The Talosians bid Pike farewell but hold onto Vina, who needs their illusory gifts to remain beautiful. They even generate a fake version of Pike to keep Vina company. The Talosians aren't malicious , they're just high-minded addicts who don't share human concepts of morality. Later adventures that crossed paths with the Talosians underwent a similar story, but their days of attempted kidnappings were over.

The Talosians had a couple of run-ins with Spock , both of which went reasonably well. Spock found himself on Talos IV after becoming unstuck in time. This handicap rendered him largely useless, and the Talosians were happy to let him stay safely with them for a brief period. They also used their illusion powers to allow Spock and company to safely escape. Their final appearance in the Original Series occurred when Spock brought Pike to the planet after a near-fatal accident. After exposure to delta rays, Pike was rendered a prisoner in his own body. The Talosians gave him the freedom to live in the dream, his mind freed from his useless body until his death.

The Talosians aren't villains, but they are one of the more unusual species in the Star Trek franchise. Psychics who are addicted to their own powers, but still willing to use them to help others, the race is a fascinating concept that still leaves plenty of room to explore in future projects.

Talosian Singing Plant 2257

Talosian singing plant

Spock likes the sound

Spock's reaction to the sound of the plants

The singing plant was a plant native to Talos IV . It was a blue plant with a single, broad lily pad-shaped leaf on a long stem, and sometimes featured a white flower on top. While blooming, the leaves shape changes slightly and its edges go from smooth to jagged. It could be found growing among the many boulders and plains that made up the planet 's surface.

Talosian Singing Plant Closeup

Closeup of the flower

As its structure vibrated in the near constant winds on the planet's surface, the Talosian singing plant emitted a beautiful, wailing chime, which was very pleasing to the ear . Holding the plant's leaf still in one's hands would cause the song to cease, and cause the plant to close up, but it would resume again once let go.

In 2254 , Spock reacted to the sound of the plant with joy , as did Michael Burnham when she visited the planet in 2257 .

Terran emperor Philippa Georgiou told Captain Leland that in the Terran universe , she destroyed the Talosians and their " stupid singing plants ". ( TOS : " The Cage ", " The Menagerie, Part I "; DIS : " If Memory Serves ")

Background information [ ]

The script of "The Cage" describes the noise produced by this kind of plant as " a musical flute -like sound " and characterizes the plant itself as " a plant with paper-thin rigid leaves which vibrate in the breeze. [ Spock ] blows on it, produces new musical notes. " The script continues with a bracketed production note that reads, " These wind-plant sounds will identify and set mood for all our scenes on the surface of Talos IV. "

The sounds created by this type of plant were actually provided by Star Trek composer Alexander Courage . ("The Menagerie, Part I" text commentary )

The Talosian singing plant was featured on the unseen cover of the Handbook of Exobiology alongside a Kaferian apple . ( ENT : " Strange New World ")

Apocrypha [ ]

These plants were referred to as windsingers in Trek literature. ( citation needed • edit )
