Live reviews

Pink Floyd, still giving me goose bumps 40 years later and about to release a new album.

I have patiently waited 20 years to receive news from afar that we will once again be blessed with the next chapter of music from the eternal Pink Floyd and to say that I feel a fair amount of anticipation and excitement regarding the immanent release of their new album “The Endless River” in October 2014 is an understatement of epic proportions.

Having met at college in 1965 Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters & Richard Wright formed Pink Floyd and thankfully adding into their mix in 1967 the ever present front man David Gilmour (who in my opinion actually is “gods own guitarist”) and whatever your views regarding the politics that led to the eventual split from the band of Roger Waters, the music that both sides have gone on to produce either solo or as Pink Floyd I for one have been left begging and pleading for more.

When my cosmic melodic intervention occurred and I was exposed for the first time to the stirring sounds of Pink Floyd I was hanging out with my best friend, it was a scorching summer day in Sydney in 1974 and I was sitting in the back of her boyfriend’s 308 Sandman Panel Van with a few other mates winding down Mona Vale Road in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on our way to Warriewood Beach. The tail gate was open and the curtains were dancing in the humid air that was wrapping around the van kissing our faces as we looked out staring at the gum trees and native flora going by that was abundant on both sides of the road leading to the beach back then.

As we drove through the summer heat the tape deck proudly displayed on the dashboard came to life and it was in that moment that I heard the first spectacular musical notes of “Dark Side of the Moon” seducing me through the speakers that had been lovingly wired in and hanging in the back of the van. I remember suddenly feeling a realisation that I was being transformed experiencing the initial dose of “Floyd” goose bumps and the ensuing release from the mind numbing ordinary and as I came to life I knew then I would never again return to how I was before tasting those first delicious musical morsels of that album that consequently stayed in the charts for a monumental 741 weeks between 1973 and 1988.

When I saw my beloved Pink Floyd in 1988 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre after lining up at 5am to get tickets weeks before, I had found myself bleary eyed and third in line from the box office window when I secured seats 16 rows back from the stage and on the night in the midst of the other unwavering fans I took my seat nervously awaiting the arrival of the musical gods and goddesses who were about to gift us with one of the most profound live musical experiences I would ever have and one that is still unmatched to this day.

As the lights dimmed the moment had finally arrived and my idols walked onto the stage in all their glorious splendour assuming their positions and composing themselves as if they knew they were about to blow us away. When those first magical notes rang out almost instantaneously the floor began vibrating and as the music made its way up through my body it exploded out of the top of my head when I jumped to my feet as the arena erupted and it was clear we were hearing the unmistakable beginning sounds of “Shine on you Crazy Diamond”.

Not knowing where to look first, I felt myself being transformed as the music washed over me holding me in a place of uncertainty and wondering once again if I would be reborn and delivered by the musical perfection that was blossoming and unfolding like a spring flower bearing its brilliant soul to the world. I made a conscious decision to drink in every single moment that night as I gazed in disbelief at the Dalek like machines rising from the stage shooting their laser beams in time with the music across the audience before disappearing again as the band bathed in the soft mist of the smoke of the psychedelic atmosphere that is the genius of Pink Floyd.

I could happily have left at the end of the first song that night satisfied that I had lived a live music experience that nothing would ever come close to or better in my life time but get better it did with each perfect note that poured out one after the other taking me to a higher plane with every glorious heavenly song that was played but those moments were fleetingly tainted with a heavy feeling in the back of my mind that I would never experience this again and I couldn’t bear the thought of it ending.

And so I have waited for news of their return and whether or not I live to see them in the flesh again in whatever form they have morphed into with the sad passing of the late great Richard Wright in 2008 remains to be seen and in the meantime I have kept the hunger at bay with my records, tapes, CD’s, DVD’s and IPod still getting those goose bumps and soon I will be drinking from the psychedelic sounds of the “Endless River” but until then rock and roll on October!!.

Pink Floyd don’t really need introducing, do they? The Dark Side of the Moon is the second biggest-selling record in history, they pioneered progressive rock as we know it today, and are unquestionably one of the most influential musical groups in history. We are talking about a band, here, who are so big that one of their tribute acts - The Australian Pink Floyd Show - play arenas themselves. In 1994, they played their final tour dates in support of their final album to date, The Division Bell, which certainly showed no sign of them slowing down commercially; it remained on the UK charts for fifty-one weeks. Ten years after the departure of Roger Waters, though, their creativity was beginning to fizzle out. After ten years of dormancy, they were persuaded to reform - Rogers included - for Live 8, and played a stunning set that opened with ‘Breathe’ and ended on an extended version of ‘Comfortably Numb’. It would prove to be their final ever show, too, with keyboardist Richard Wright passing away in 2008. Later this year, however, they’ll release one last album, The Endless River, based on material from 1994 sessions that were tentatively known as The Big Spliff; there’s always the possibility that Dave Gilmour and Nick Mason will mark its release on stage.

It's very unlikely that they will perform live again but one can be optimistic. I saw them in 1994 and without doubt, it was one of the highlights of the year for me. They played a number of nights at Earls Court in London. Unfortunately, one night some of the seating collapsed and there were possibly some injuries, I wasn't there that night. The line up was obviously (as any fan would know) without Syd Barrett! Also, Roger Waters had already left the band. The visual aspects of the concert including the flying pigs, the aeroplane moving diagonally across the roof of the venue, the circular screen showing various films, some rather manic, were mesmorising, but without doubt it was the music and Dave Gilmour's singing that was the best part of the show.

Fans were well pleased with all the favourites that were included like Money, Comfortably Numb, etc. A truly awesome night of music.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

David Gilmour shreds on guitar.

You won’t need to travel to “The Dark Side of the Moon” to see David Gilmour live in 2024.

It won’t hurt if you’re in New York or Los Angeles, though.

The long-time Pink Floyd member and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has ten concerts lined up this fall in just three cities as part of his ‘Luck and Strange Tour’ in support of his upcoming album with the same name.

A whopping five (!) of those ten Gilmour gigs will be in New York City when he takes on a short residency at Madison Square Garden from Nov. 4-10.

At all shows, fans can expect the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer to deliver cuts from the new record as well as more obscure Pink Floyd tracks that might not normally make the set list.

“Yeah, that might be better represented,” he told Uncut Magazine, according to Jambands.com . “I mean, at least one from the 60s. The one we’ve done in the past is ‘Astronomy’ [“Astronomy Domine,” track one from 1967 debut ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’]. That’s always entertaining and fun and gets people off to a happy start. There’s songs from the ‘[A] Momentary Lapse of Reason’ and ‘The Division Bell’ albums. I mean, I think ‘High Hopes’ is as good as anything we ever did at any time.”

If this sounds like your dream classic rock deep dive, tickets are available for all shows as soon as today.

Some are quite affordable, too.

At the time of publication, ticket prices start at $66 before fees on Vivid Seats.

His New York shows have seats starting anywhere from $102 to $196 before fees depending on the gig.

Curious how much tickets cost for the Gilmour gig of your choosing?

We’re here to help.

Our team has everything you need to know and more about David Gilmour’s 2024 ‘Luck and Strange Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to flucutation.

David Gilmour tour schedule 2024

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

David Gilmour new album

Gilmour’s new album “Luck and Strange” is due out Sept. 6.

Prior to the record’s release, he dropped three singles; the gentle, rockin’ “The Piper’s Call,” the foreboding, haunting “Zero Hour” with Michael Berkeley and Neil Tennant and the introspective ballad “Between Two Points” featuring his daughter Romany Gilmour on vocals.

You can listen to the trio of tracks  here .

David Gilmour band members

According to a press release, here’s who will be performing with Gilmour this year:

Guy Pratt   bass and background vocals

Greg Phillinganes   keyboards

Rob Gentry   keyboards

Adam Betts   drums

Ben Worsley   guitar

Louise Marshall   background vocals

Hattie Webb   background vocals

Charlie Webb   background vocals

In regards to this troupe, Gilmour said he mixed things up because “it was all too robotic, and some people would have been better off in a Pink Floyd tribute band,” and wanted to “get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space.”

the pink floyd tour

Support Local Journalism

Brit Floyd pays tribute to the legendary rock band from London and is touring with its show entitled, “P U L S E” which is the tribute band’s biggest production to date. “P U L S E” recreates the Division Bell Tour, which, in 1994, was the highest-grossing tour in rock history.

It’s a two-and-a-half-hour show featuring so many classic Pink Floyd tunes. This is a must for Pink Floyd fans. Reserved seating starts at $75 and you can purchase tickets by calling the Vilar Performing Arts Center’s Box Office at 970-845-TIXS (8497) or go to the website, VilarPAC.org .

Dallas Symphony Orchestra at Bravo! Vail Music Festival

the pink floyd tour

After an amazing start to the six-week music festival with Sinfonica Mineria last weekend, Bravo! Vail welcomes the Dallas Symphony Orchestra back for another season. Conductor Fabio Luisi and the group just returned from Europe, performing in many new concert halls in a short amount of time.

“The tour was very exciting for all of us,” Luisi said. “Many of the works that we played on tour there we will be performing here in Vail.”

On Friday, Luisi will conduct the American Broadway Songbook, which will be the first pops show he has led at Bravo! Vail Music Festival.

“The works of Broadway fit into the American musical history, and because they are so well-known, these songs do connect differently with audiences. They also show how nimble an orchestra can be and, quite simply, it’s a lot of fun,” Luisi said.

On Saturday, you’ll hear Tchaikovsky’s “Fifth Symphony” and the Colorado premiere of Anna Clyne’s new work “ATLAS” for piano and orchestra with pianist Jeremy Denk. On Sunday, listen for Brahm’s violin concerto and Strauss’ “Don Juan” and “Der Rosenkavalier.”

Tickets are available at BravoVail.org and showtimes are at 6 p.m. at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater.

Yoga experiences

the pink floyd tour

Take your yoga practice to a different level – literally – with yoga up at elevation or in a new and different setting. The Vail Valley offers many different kinds of yoga classes that take you out of the traditional yoga studio.

Mountain Top Yoga at Mid-Vail

Head to Mid-Vail at 10,250 feet above sea level for Mountain Top Yoga at 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturdays from now until Aug. 31. Classes will be held on the lower level of the Mid-Vail Deck where you’ll find stunning views of the Gore Range. If you already have your Epic Pass for the 2024-2025 ski season, the class is $10. London church hosts concert by ‘antisemitic’ pink floyd star roger waters.

Outcry over Roger Waters performance at St Pancras Church

Alleged antisemite Roger Waters will perform in a Church of England building this evening along with anti-Zionist rapper Lowkey.

Notorious for his use of Nazi-era symbols, the Pink Floyd frontman has become known for his anti-Israel rants and offensive costumes.  After they received numerous complaints, on Friday afternoon St Pancras Church said it would not cancel the concert featuring Waters, despite recognising “that the programme has greatly offended friends in the Jewish community.”

This church said it did not intend to cause any offence but that the concert would go ahead as planned.

The Gaza fundraising event, “Rock for Palestine,” is an external booking by alternative media outlet Double Down News, and will be streamed on YouTube on Friday evening.

Protests erupted outside the church on Euston Road on Friday afternoon, as around two hundred demonstrated against Water’s “virulent antisemitism” being allowed in the church.

Jewish protest organisers said that hosting Waters “is utterly unacceptable, and we must show London that we will not tolerate a church in our city giving stage to such disgusting collection of known Jew haters.”

Campaign group Christian Action Against Antisemitism told the church leader: “Platforming a renowned Jew hater is not only offensive but it is also entirely unacceptable.”

In May last year, German police launched a criminal investigation into Water’s SS-style uniform. Performing in Berlin, he wore a black overcoat with a red armband and aimed an imitation machine gun into the audience.

His solo shows have featured the name of Holocaust victim, Anne Frank, projected onto a screen, and a pig-shaped balloon adorned with the Star of David and various corporate logos.

In September last year, John Ware presented an in depth documentary for the Campaign against Antisemitism which delved into numerous claims of antisemitism levelled against Walters.

[Missing Credit]

According to the Anti-Defamation League, in a video last month he advocated for the dismantling of Israel as a Jewish state, denied the Jewish connection to Israel, and called on Jews living in Israel to "go back to Eastern Europe, or the United States, or where you came from," adding "Goodbye, Israel. It's over."

Waters is slated to share the church stage on Friday night with British rapper Lowkey, who has called the state of Israel a "racist endeavour", and previously said "nothing is more antisemitic than Zionism."

Tickets for the event, pitted as “a unique concert dedicated to promoting peace, freedom, and justice for Palestine,” have sold out.

There are concerns that hosting Waters could open the door to antisemitism inside St Pancras Church, affiliated to the Church of England.

[Missing Credit]

One protester who said he is a Pink Floyd fan told the JC , “It is immensely sad that I will be standing outside Roger Waters’ concert today waving the Israel flag, blowing the whistle and hopefully affecting the show he will be giving today. But it is a necessity.

“Like many others, Roger Waters has drifted off into a fashionable ideological attitude.

“All Pink Floyd group members have distanced themselves from Waters a long time ago and whatever he does, both on a personal and a ‘political’ level, is motivated and nourished by a deep-rooted narcissism that is sad to witness.”

In a statement, the church said: “Last month, St Pancras Church was approached regarding a booking for a fundraising concert, in support of the charity Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF). The church regularly receives charitable bookings to raise funds for much-needed causes, and it was accepted, although at this stage the event’s programme had not been finalised.

“We recognise now that the programme has greatly offended friends in the Jewish community. This was never our intention and we apologise unreservedly.

“At this stage, with large numbers of people having bought tickets to a charity fundraising event in good faith, we are obliged to honour the booking. We have also received security advice and assessed the public order aspects.

“Antisemitism and Islamophobia have no place in our society, or in our church. We commit to meeting with representatives of the Jewish community to learn more about antisemitism, and to ensure a deeper understanding of concerns of our Jewish friends and neighbours.”

The Church of England has been approached for comment.
