Police cars and an ambulance surround the passenger plane as it sits on the tarmac.

Passengers were removed from a flight after it was forced to land due to ‘cases of suspected infectious diseases’ today.

United Airlines flight UA998 was flying off the south coast of Ireland when it was diverted to Dublin Airport over two separate incidents on board.

One involved a suspected medical incident, while the other was a disruptive passenger aboard the flight from Brussels to New York ’s Newark Airport, according to Dublin Airport.

Numerous police cars and at least one ambulance were pictured on the tarmac around the airplane.

The flight had been expected to leave early this afternoon, but this was delayed as an infectious diseases team arrived to carry out tests.

Passengers were kept on board for the duration.

In a post on X , passenger Johan Westberg said the question ‘now is what virus is onboard if anything’.

United Airlines confirmed one disruptive passenger was removed from the flight.

Two more people were also removed, including both the ‘ill passenger’ and a person travelling with them, the airline told Metro.co.uk.

Asked whether the unruly passenger had been arrested, Dublin Airport and the Irish police did not provide an answer.

The condition of the unwell passenger, and whether they did have an infectious disease, has not yet been confirmed.

In a statement, Ireland’s Health Service Executive (HSE) said: ‘The HSE cannot comment on individual cases to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the people involved.

‘Departments of Public Health respond to notified cases of suspected infectious diseases, undertake a risk assessment of the situation and control measures are put in place, if required, to protect the public health.

‘Today, HSE National Ambulance Service and HSE Public Health undertook appropriate investigations at Dublin Airport following protocols in partnership with Dublin Airport, An Garda Síochána and Airport Police.

‘Public Health and National Ambulance Service managed this incident according to national public health guidelines.’

A spokesperson for Dublin Airport said: ‘There is no impact on operations at Dublin Airport and passengers travelling this evening should plan to arrive at the airport as normal.’

The flight has since been cleared. It departed from Dublin Airport shortly after 6pm.

Westberg estimated it would arrive some six hours late to its final destination at Newark Airport.

Metro.co.uk contacted the Irish police for comment.

Passengers spending the night in Dublin Airport: ‘This airport is going to be like a war zone tomorrow’

Hundreds of passengers bedding down in dublin airport following uk air traffic control glitches.

Hundreds of disgruntled passengers were facing a night at Dublin Airport after a glitch in UK air traffic control had a knock-on effect across the network.

More than 100 flights to and from Ireland were cancelled as a result of the glitch which knocked out the UK’s National Air Traffic Services (NATS) computer system for more than three hours on Monday.

The issue affected not only flights between Britain and Ireland but flights that use UK air space. There were long queues at the Ryanair desk on Monday night as passengers waited to change flights or source accommodation in Dublin. One Ryanair passenger tweeted that there won’t be another flight for him until Wednesday and he has yet to be able to book a transfer or find a hotel.

Liam Curry, who was flying to Izmir in Turkey with his wife Bridget and Liam Jr, said they arrived at the airport at 1pm on Monday for a 4.40pm flight. They had gone through security when their flight was cancelled. “We were supposed to be offered hotel and transport by SunExpress [the flight company] if there is a delay of more than four hours. None of that is going on,” he said.

“We have been told that our flight is tomorrow at 11am, but now it is supposed to be at 2pm. The nightmare is going to be insane because every flight that was cancelled today is going to go tomorrow. This airport is going to be like a war zone tomorrow.”

Four members of a West Cork family on their way to Izmir were resigned to bedding down in the airport overnight. Two were due to have medical procedures in the Turkish resort and those are now in jeopardy. “The whole thing has been a joke,” said one who asked not to be named.

“We queued for an hour and a half to put in our baggage, but nobody was telling us anything. We had paid for the lounge and couldn’t get into it. We spent a few hours wandering around duty-free just to pass a few days. Another passenger came over and said our flight was cancelled. Nobody from the airline was telling us anything.”

Eight members of the extended Gibbons family were forced to book new flights for Tuesday morning with Aer Lingus. Their Ryanair flight to Malaga was cancelled because the plane taking them was stranded in Malaga.

They were unable to rebook through Ryanair because they had booked through a travel agent. “It’s a bummer. This is the first time there has been a flight to Malaga cancelled since January.”

Flight diverted to Dublin Airport due to unruly passenger and medical issue

A flight on its way to the United States has been forced to divert to Dublin Airport this afternoon due to a medical issue and disruptive passenger on board.

United Airlines flight UA998 was bound for New York from Brussels when it was forced to land in Ireland. It is unknown if the two incidents are related.

Passengers remain on board the aircraft this afternoon and the HSE, gardai and NSA are understood to have met the aircraft. The plane remains on stand in the airport with no disruption to normal operation at Dublin Airport expected.

Airport operator daa is advising passengers to arrive at the airport as normal for their scheduled flights. A statement was issued by daa on social media.

It said: "Flight UA998 from Brussels to New York's Newark Airport diverted to Dublin Airport this afternoon due to reports of two separate incidents - a disruptive passenger and a suspected medical issue - on board. Appropriate protocols were put in place by Dublin Airport Operations and Airport Police for the arrival of the aircraft and Gardai, National Ambulance Service and HSE personnel met the aircraft on arrival.

"There is no impact on operations at Dublin Airport and passengers travelling this evening should plan to arrive at the airport as normal."

Dublin Live understands that the flight was given clearance to depart just before 5pm. The unwell passenger and unruly passenger were both removed from the aircraft.

A United Airlines spokesman told Dublin Live: "United flight 998 from Brussels to New York/Newark landed safely in Dublin on Monday because of a disruptive passenger. Separately, a medical situation was identified with a different passenger. Medical personnel in Ireland investigated and cleared the flight to continue with the removal of one disruptive passenger, one ill passenger and one other person traveling with the ill passenger. The flight has re-departed for New York/Newark."

A HSE spokeswoman told Dublin Live: "Today (Monday, 3 June 2024), HSE National Ambulance Service and HSE Public Health undertook appropriate investigations at Dublin Airport following protocols in partnership with Dublin Airport, An Garda Síochána and Airport Police. Public Health and National Ambulance Service managed this incident according to national public health guidelines."

Shocking videos show Air Canada Boeing jet leave Toronto airport spitting flames

Latest Videos

In multiple jaw-dropping videos shared on social media this week, a Paris-bound Air Canada flight is shown spitting flames as it returned to Pearson Airport after experiencing engine issues .

The videos, which were captured from multiple angles around the travel hub, show sparks flickering underneath the aircraft. The Boeing 777-200LR (twin-jet), was performing flight AC872 to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and took off on Wednesday at 8:46 p.m.

According to a reconstruction video posted by aviation YouTube channel, You can see ATC , air traffic controllers reportedly informed the flight's pilot of the issue, after another plane spotted flames coming from the aircraft.

"Air Canada 872, you got a lot of fire…I'm not sure where it's coming from," air traffic control said. "Air Canada 872, looks like the number two engine, sir. Just let me know what you need to do."

In response, the pilot of the aircraft declares PAN-PAN , a term used in radiotelephone communications to signify that there is an urgency on board a boat, ship, aircraft, or other vehicle.

The term is most often used when there is a state of urgency but not in cases when there is an immediate danger to a person's life.

"PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, PAN-PAN, Air Canada 872, we’ve had to reduce engine power on the right hand side," the pilot says.

Despite experiencing the alarming issues, the aircraft landed back at Pearson Airport without further incident. Fire emergency vehicles met the aircraft on the runway, and despite there being 389 passengers onboard, no injuries were reported.

In a statement shared to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Air Canada confirmed that the flight returned to Toronto shortly after departure due to an "engine issue that was determined to be a compressor stall."

The airline also acknowledged the videos posted to social media that showed the aircraft spitting flames.

"This can be caused by various factors, but the result is the flow of air through the engine is disrupted causing fuel to ignite further down the engine, which is why flames are visible in the video. It is not the engine itself on fire," the airline clarified.

"Our pilots are highly skilled professionals well trained to safely manage such incidents and in this case the situation was quickly stabilized as per our standard procedures and the aircraft landed normally."

Following the incident, the aircraft was taken out of service for thorough evaluation, and affected passengers were rescheduled on a flight that took off early Thursday morning.

Tanker truck overturns at Miami International Airport, spilling fuel near runway

Amanda Batchelor , Digital Executive Producer

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A tanker truck overturned Thursday morning at Miami International Airport, spilling fuel near one of the runways.

Sky 10 was above the scene in the 4200 block of Northwest 21st Street as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews surrounded the tanker and placed orange cones around it.

According to first responders, “fire crews were able to significantly reduce the amount of fuel that was leaking and disconnect ignition sources on the vehicle.”

MDFR officials said hazmat crews are working to contain the fuel spill, and DERM has been notified.

Two people were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the accident remains unclear.
