Leilani is a 50ft Uniflite power vessel

Well-known for being solid boats, Uniflites are respected seagoing yachts. Leilani is perfectly designed for Hawaiian waters and features added amenities for your comfort. Her spacious main cabin provides perimeter seating and shelter from inclement weather and there is always plenty of space as she operates at a limited capacity. There are large windows with plenty of air flow and forward of the main cabin is a private restroom.

Please note: Your safety is our number one priority! Fortunately, Mother Nature nearly always cooperates, and we do go to Molokini and Turtle Town. On days of inclement weather, our Expert Captains reserve the right to select alternate locations where the conditions are safe and offer the best overall conditions.

What should I bring on my catamaran tour?

We encourage you to be prepared for your charter with your swimwear, towels, and reef safe sunscreen. The state of Hawai’i allows only reef safe sunscreen, which should be easy to find locally. We also have reef safe sunscreen on board. We will provide all of your snorkeling equipment, including floatation noodles. Please note, we absolutely do not allow full face masks on any of our charters. We also encourage you to bring something warm for the return sail, such as a light jacket or sweater.

What should I expect when sailing aboard a catamaran?

Our vessels are designed for sailing, offering both agility and stability on the water. With a cabin offering shaded seating space, as well as refuge from the sun under our sails, our vessels ensure a comfortable experience both in and out of the sun. We have trampolines at our bow that offer lounging opportunities and a chance to peer into the beautiful water as we sail across it. We have ladders that descend into the water with hand rails to assist you going in and out. We also have freshwater showers at our stern.

South Maui and the Wailea-Makena area are prized for their beautiful beaches, calm and clear emerald-blue waters, and near perfect weather year round. The Kai Kanani II is the only commercial catamaran that lives in South Maui, moored off of Maluaka Beach in Makena. Seven days-a-week, she takes passengers on the short cruise out to Molokini Crater, just 3 miles away, to swim and play in the clearest water in all of Hawaii. Five nights-a-week, the Kai Kanani II raises her sails, taking advantage of our famous afternoon trade winds on our Adventure Sunset Sail. What shoes should you wear? We suggest sandals or flip-flops, shoes that are easily removed as you walk across the beach barefoot. And please bring a towel! Once on board, you’re welcome to wear your sandals or whatever type of shoe you’re comfortable in.

The Calypso Maui is ready to take you on exciting ocean excursions. The boat launches from Ma’alaea – the most easily reached, centralized harbor on the island . You can go on the morning Molokini Snorkeling Tour , the Sunset Dinner Cruise , the seasonal Whale Watch , and – for super special occasions — the Private Charter !

This motorized catamaran is built with three decks of fun, and is a wonderful vessel for landlubbers and ocean adventurers alike. The Calypso Maui operates like a spacious, floating amusement park, and her double hulls are built for stability . When the boat is moving forward, the twin hulls cut smartly through the water, leaving most of the craft to float high above the waves, and ride on top of the sea-surface winds. This leads to a comfortable, smooth catamaran snorkeling trip in Maui for you and your group, even when island trade-winds factor in.

The views from Calypso Maui are better than any other boat for miles, because she is the only vessel on the island that has three decks .  As a bonus, you’ll find glass panels on the bottom of the boa t, too!  Two of the cabins are completely covered from the sun, but both ends are open to the sea air. The huge tinted windows along both the port and starboard sides ensure that you always have a good view of the great Pacific beyond the railings.  Year round, it’s good to keep your eyes open for  flying fish , sea turtles, dolphins, false killer whales, and other fantastic marine animals who may be up near the surface. During whale season (mid-December through mid-April), come out to see the 45-ton humpback whales! Once you’ve seen a whale, nothing else can compare.

Our fun, dynamic, and experienced crew is there for you no matter what you need, and safety is paramount. If you come out with us to Molokini Crater, the captain and crew will teach you what you need to know in order to snorkel. Crew members will explain how to use the wide dive steps, two water slides, or the “leap of faith” jump-off point to enter the water, and they will entertain you with little-known facts about the islands that you are gliding past. The crew will also have delicious food and drinks at the ready, along with local insider tips, good humor, and  Aloha .

We had a large group with small children. The crew was very accommodating and friendly! They made sure we had a spot together on the boat and were comfortable! They had all the right equipment to make snorkeling doable for all skill levels and ages including a viewing board to allow my 2 year old niece to see the ocean bottom. The food was great! The boat was clean and spacious! The family said it was a highlight of the trip! We would definitely do it again!

This trip was amazing. Having a big boat was worth it. Sure there were more people. But when there was a heavy surf we barely noticed. The food for both breakfast and lunch was great!!! Also on the ride back they gave out some little ice creams too! The photographer Marley is amazing at photographing and he has both go pros and nice camera to use in the water. This was 100% worth it.

We took our kids (6 & 11) and we had a blast! The highlight was swimming with a turtle for sure. Every just seeing the cool fish was amazing. The girls loved the slides off the boat and the food was good. Definitely would do it again

An absolute must do. This is an awesome adventure for the price. You get to stop at two locations and even if you only get out and snorkel at one it is way worth it for the cost. Molokini was incredible and clear. The crew on this boat makes everything even better the captain is funny, friendly, gives clear helpful instructions to snorkel newbies like myself and they have everything they can for sea sickness. Truly an amazing time with the Calypso.

So glad our family did this! We swam along with schools of beautiful fish and the majestic turtles. The turtles were absolutely incredible to watch in their natural habitat!! The gear was quality and the crew totally made the experience! Relaxing and floating was so amazingly peaceful. One of the lesser expensive excursions, and ended up being one of the best highlights for our family of 4, with two teens!

We have been in Maui for 2 weeks, and this was by far my favorite excursion, and the cheapest too! The crew was so awesome! I felt safe because they come in water with you. We saw so many turtles and sharks (reef sharks but I’d say 4ft long).The drinks were yummy (mai tai)! After snorkeling, we jumped off the boat and we did the slide as well. My kids are 12 & 17….they had a great time. I HIGHLY recommend this trip!

We booked a sunset cruise to celebrate our daughter's birthday and it was everything we wanted and more! The captain and crew were phenomenal and went above and beyond to give us a first class experience. Food was great, drinks were flowing, and the live music was the icing on the cake. The captain let our daughter sit behind the wheel for a little bit which was a special experience for her. We did several tours while in Maui, but this was by far the best!

My husband and I had so much fun! Our experience was top notch and the staff are so nice and friendly, felt super safe the entire time. The life guards watch the entire time to make sure everyone is having a great time while staying close and being safe. We saw so many turtles and beautiful fish, at the end of the tour we encountered a lot of dolphins and it really felt so magical. 100% recommend, it was definitely my favorite part of our vacation!

We had a fantastic time yesterday seeing three kinds of dolphins! Captain Heather just knew how to find them. She was so informed and humorous. Snorkeling off the boat in Lanai Bay was so amazing. Great visibility and tons of fish. We staying in the water for the full hour and never tired. Afterwards the party started when the bar opened. Very soon after, everyone on the boat was friends. Drinks were excellent and plentiful. Highly recommend, it was fantastic!

AFTER SNORKELING

THE REEFS OF WEST MAUI

The bays of Honoapi’ilani offer some of the best snorkeling on Maui! Our Captain will choose the preferred snorkeling destination for that day, (most often Honolua Bay), which allows our guests to truly enjoy the most ideal conditions & visibility that West Maui has to offer. You might find yourself swimming among the fish and  honu  (Hawaiian sea turtle) in the coves of Honolua, enjoying the crystal clear waters at Cliff House, or even snorkeling the expansive Olowalu reef – Maui’s “mother reef”!

* Most common in the Winter months, a North swell can cause large surf at Honolua and Slaughterhouse. On “big surf” days our Captain’s will choose the best and safest snorkeling site for the group;  2 snorkel locations are not guaranteed on days with high surf

SNUBA UPGRADE

For an up close & personal look at Maui’s marine wildlife, we also offer an optional SNUBA upgrade for any guest 8yrs and older (space is limited). SNUBA is a safe and exciting way to explore Maui’s underwater ecosystem, allowing you to breathe underwater through a mouthpiece and an air hose that is connected to a tank sitting in a raft on the surface. **NOTE** If at check-in, surf conditions are deemed dangerous, guests can expect to walk 10-15 minutes north on the beach walk to a safer boarding area. Check-in location will not change.

We will be loading from the beach, you can expect to get wet up to your knees when you board. Please watch the short Beach Loading video below, taken on a small surf day. This tour is NOT recommended for guests with mobility issues. Please consider a tour with a Maalaea Harbor departure.

KA'ANAPALI BEACH LOADING

This excursion loads directly from the sands of world-famous Ka’anapali Beach, and you WILL get wet when loading. Please watch this quick video showing our beach-loading process during small shore break. Please keep in mind that beach loading conditions vary and requires a certain level of physical fitness.  Guests with injuries or disabilities which impede mobility may find beach loading too difficult or strenuous on higher surf days. It is recommended that guests with mobility issues and parents with small infants , book one of our many tours departing from the Lahaina Harbor.

End of an era.

It is with a sad heart to announce that we will no longer be in operation. After months of consideration, research and realization I have decided that the investment required to put Ocean Riders back together is just too great. It takes a special boat to handle the conditions we encounter circumnavigating Lana'i. To all of you that have experienced the "exciting" channel crossings and the trek down the north shore passing the shipwrecks you know what I'm talking about :) There are many other factors besides just replacing the vessel that have contributed to the decision such as storage, equipment replacement and catering, to name a few. I feel fortunate to have even had the opportunity to do this as a 'job' for the past 16 years and consider it an honor to be a part of the Ocean Riders' legacy that started back in 1988. Thank you to everyone that ever stepped foot on the boat with me. I will never forget all the great times and amazing people that I got to spend my days with on the water. Captain Chad is very knowledgeable and skilled. Storm swells made the journey from Maui to Lanai a little more adventurous - but we knew we were in good hands as Chad did a great job navigating. The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the 50th state's "Aloha" spirit. Each island offers a different climate, landscape, and style, and even on the same island, there are significant variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kailua-Kona region on the west coast tends to be much drier.

Visitors to Hawaii, especially first-timers, want to experience as much of the islands as possible, and a cruise is a great way to accomplish that, according to Pam Jacobs , travel advisor at Travel Store in Palos Verdes Estates, California. “People love the inter-island cruises because all meals are included, so it’s an economical as well as convenient way to see the islands. You unpack once and avoid getting in and out of airports and checking in and out of hotels. It’s the best way to island hop.”

Families and travelers with limited time enjoy the seven-day Norwegian Cruise Lines Honolulu to Honolulu round trip cruises, while retirees may opt for a longer cruise from the West Coast with more days at sea. You can embark from several ports on the West Coast, including San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle. “Many Hawaiʻi cruises are part of longer voyages to the South Pacific, Australia, or around the world,” says Jacobs, a cruise and train travel specialist.

“The shore excursions on the cruises are the same things a tourist would do on land — go to a luau, play golf, visit an attraction like the Arizona Memorial, or just relax on the beach — and it’s all arranged for you,” according to Jacobs. One more bit of advice from our cruise expert: “Always arrive a day before your cruise to be sure you’re there and ready. You’ll have time to explore and relax before boarding.”

Below are some of the best cruises to see Hawaiʻi . Dates, prices, amenities, and itineraries vary, so choosing a cruise requires some planning and research. That's always part of the fun, so hopefully this list will inspire you to get started.

Holland America: 17-day Circle Hawaii - Round Trip from San Diego

This cruise on the 1,432-passenger Zaandam departs from San Diego and spends five days at sea before arriving in Honolulu at 8 a.m. Optional activities include a trip to Pearl Harbor, a hike on Diamond Head, a road trip around Oahu, an evening at the Polynesian Cultural Center, and a day on Waikiki Beach. After an overnight sail to Kauai, the ship docks at Nawiliwili Harbor. Guests can take a Wailua River cruise to the Fern Grotto , a tour of a coffee plantation, or a trip to Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Maui is the next island on the itinerary, and guests can choose a drive to Haleakala Crater , a snorkel adventure aboard the new Reef Explorer, or a drive to Maui’s Upcountry or rainforest. The final two stops, Hilo and Kona, are on the Big Island. In Kona, there’s an optional Atlantis submarine trip to explore coral gardens or a catamaran cruise. This trip aboard the 4,180-passenger Ovation of the Seas offers guests much to do during days at sea, with a rock climbing wall, FlowRider surf simulator, and Northstar, a 360-degree observation capsule 300 feet above sea level. “For travelers who have the time for these days at sea, the activities on the ship are a big part of the fun,” according to Jacobs. After departing Vancouver , British Columbia, the ship spends four days at sea before it arrives in Honolulu for a day of exploring Oʻahu with a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center or Waikiki Beach. The ship crosses the International Date Line with a day at sea and then passes the beautiful Napali Coast of Kauai, famous for its dramatic cliffs rising from the ocean. The final stop is Oahu, and passengers spend as much time as they want exploring Honolulu, Waikiki Beach, or the rest of the island before heading home.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 7-Day Hawaii Inter-Island Cruise from Honolulu

Spend a week exploring four of Hawaii's islands on this cruise aboard the 2,186-passenger Pride of America , the only ship sailing to four Hawaiian islands in seven days year-round. “These Norwegian Cruise Line trips are a dependable way to see the islands with their convenient weekly departures,” Jacobs says. “You can see the other islands and spend some time in Oahu before or after your cruise.” Onboard activities include basketball, volleyball, video games, theater, hot tubs, spa, and shopping. Departing Honolulu on Saturday evening, the ship heads to Kahului, Maui for two days with options like a drive on the Road to Hana, a catamaran cruise to Molokini for snorkeling with sea turtles, a tour to Haleakala Crater, and more. Next is a day in Hilo on the Big Island, where guests can see a volcano, rain forest, waterfalls, or a lush botanical garden. On the other side of the island in Kona, snorkeling, fishing, cruising in a catamaran, and a reef tour are among optional activities. On Kauai , passengers can enjoy a traditional luau, hike through a rainforest, go kayaking, or take in Waimea Canyon . The following two days feature a hike up the slopes of Hualalai with a naturalist guide, night snorkeling among Giant Pacific Manta rays, and plenty of opportunities for swimming or kayaking. On day four in Maui, guests can stroll through historic Lahaina, snorkel among coral and sea turtles, or kayak in a marine sanctuary. Lanai is the next island, where guests can paddleboard or kayak past 1,000-foot-high sea cliffs, go snorkeling, take a bike excursion, or visit the quaint Lanai Culture and Heritage Center. On Molokai, guests can learn how taro is cultivated and turned into poi , or they can hike to a spectacular waterfall in Halawa Valley . Honolulu is a bustling city with many family-friendly oceanfront resorts and attractions like the Honolulu Zoo , Waikiki Aquarium , Bishop Museum and Pearl Harbor . Plus, famous Waikiki Beach is one of the best places to learn to surf and paddle board.

2. Learn About Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is the site of WWII’s 1941 bombing attack and home to the USS Arizona Memorial . Tickets for the 75-minute USS Arizona Memorial program are free. However, there’s a limited number available each day.

The program includes a short video (with actual attack footage) and a round-trip boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial, located above the remains of the sunken ship. The ship is the final resting place for more than 1,000 men.

Since Pearl Harbor is one of Oahu’s top attractions, it’s strongly recommended that visitors make advanced reservations online at www.recreation.gov .

3. Hike on Diamond Head

There aren’t many places in the world where you can walk along a trail to the edge of a 300,000-year-old crater, but Diamond Head is one of them. A hiking trail leads to the summit for panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu.

4. Snorkel at Hanauma Bay National Preserve

Located on the side of Koko Head, Hanauma Bay is about a 30-minute drive from Honolulu. With beautiful blue waters, Hanauma Bay is a great place to snorkel and see its 400 species of tropical fish and abundance of green sea turtles.

5. Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center features six island villages representing Hawai‘i, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji and Aotearoa (New Zealand). At this Polynesian-themed park and living museum, you can learn about various traditions through interactive and hands-on activities. For example, learn to throw a wooden spear, paddle a canoe and cook like a Polynesian.

The center also has family-friendly luaus with a variety of traditional food like lomilomi salmon, chicken long rice and kalua pork. Note that no alcohol is served at this luau.

6. Book Exciting Adventures at Kualoa Ranch

The family-owned Kualoa Ranch offers many different types of tours sure to thrill adults and kids of all ages. Adventures include horseback riding, jungle expeditions, beach outings and visits to Hawaiian fish ponds.

7. Watch Surfers on the North Shore

The North Shore is the rustic and laid-back side of the island with legendary surf beaches and food trucks serving fresh fish tacos, shrimp and more. Take a surf lesson at Hans Hedemann Surf School or just watch the pros. Laniakea Beach is one of the best spots to see sea turtles sunbathing.

8. Eat Shave Ice in Haleiwa

This little surf town is home to boutiques, art galleries and restaurants. It’s also where you’ll find Matsumoto Shave Ice – one of the best places to enjoy the snow cone-style treat.

Maui is a popular island for many reasons. It’s a developed island with stunning natural attractions. Kaanapali Beach is a resort area on the western shore of Maui and is home to a variety of beachfront hotels , great family-friendly restaurants , lots of free things to do with kids  and beautiful sunsets.

9. Take a snorkel cruise to Molokini Crater

Enjoy a catamaran cruise to one of the best snorkel and scuba spots in Hawaii – Molokini Crater . The crescent-shaped crater is home to thousands of tropical fish, Hawaiian green sea turtles and other marine life. You can also take a whale watching boat tour to the area.

10. Visit the Maui Ocean Center

Kids of all ages will be impressed with the Maui Ocean Center ’s many exhibits. It features a 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit with a 240-degree view acrylic tunnel, outdoor tide pools, turtle lagoon, living reef and daily presentations.

11. Spend a day on Haleakala

A dormant volcano, Haleakala sits at 10,023 feet above sea level. Catch a sunrise or sunset from the summit. Daytime views are also stunning. Note that it can be chilly at the top, so bring sweaters for everyone.

Don’t rush off the mountain without visiting two unique farms. At the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, you can walk through lavender fields. Nearby, the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm produces award-winning cheeses. On the kid-friendly tours, you’ll feed goats and sample cheese.

12. Drive on the Road to Hana

Pack the car with snacks and drinks for an incredible road trip. Get an early start to beat the crowds on this popular drive. The drive is just 52 miles long. But with 620 curves and 59 narrow bridges, it can take a few hours. Along the way, you’ll see waterfalls, black sand beaches and the charming town of Hana.

Kauai’s mountains and valleys are lush and green, flowing with waterfalls and rivers that are ideal for paddle boarding and kayaking. Other places to visit include Waimea Canyon, Poipu Beach and Hanalei Bay.

13. Horseback Riding at Princeville Ranch

Located on Kauai’s North Shore, Princeville Ranch is one of Hawaii’s oldest cattle ranches. Horseback riding lessons are available for ages 4 and older.

14. Book Ziplining and Mountain Tubing Tours

Kauai Backcountry Adventures  offers the best family activities for an adrenaline rush. On the mountain tubing tours you’ll float down an old sugar plantation irrigation system, through open canals and through several tunnels hand-dug circa 1870.

In addition, the company offers a seven-line Zipline course through a lush forest.

15. Sail Along Napali Coast

The Napali coast spans 17 miles along Kauai’s North Shore. Guided snorkel cruises are an excellent way to see the stunning Napali Coast’s cliffs, sea caves and waterfalls.

Hawaii Island (Big Island)

Hawaii Island, also called the Big Island of Hawaii, has an array of diverse outdoor adventures suitable for the whole family. In fact, because the island has 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones, you’ll also experience a variety of terrain and weather. Explore beaches, waterfalls, cultural sites and coffee farms on the Big Island, which is home to two active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa.

Many of the large Hawaii Island resorts, such as the Fairmont Orchid on the Kohala Coast , offer hula lessons, canoeing and other Hawaiian cultural experiences for their guests.

16. Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hilo

Stop by the visitor center for park news and activities before exploring this unique park that has hiking trails, steam vents, lava tubes and a rainforest. Older kids will especially enjoy trekking through the rainforest to the crater floor pocked with steam vents.

17. Visit Akaka Falls State Park

Located along the northeastern Hilo Coast, Akaka Falls State Park is the site of two waterfalls on one short hike. Follow a footpath through a rainforest to see the 100-foot Kahuna Falls and the towering Akaka Falls . This is a lovely outing for kids of all ages.

18. Shop at the Hilo Farmers Market

The Hilo Farmers Market  features over 200 vendors selling fresh fruits, vegetables, Big Island food products, tropical flowers and handmade craft items. It’s a great place to shop for picnic items to bring to the beach or back to your hotel.

19. Snorkel in Sunny Kona

The sunny Kona district is great for beach activities like snorkeling , paddle boarding and spotting dolphins and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles). One of Kona’s most unique adventures is the nighttime manta ray boat tour. It’s a magical experience to float on top of the water in a calm bay, with bright lights attracting the rays who swirl inches below.

‘Ambassador of the culture’: Crowds line Honolulu Harbor to see Mexican tall ship

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Sounds of music and dancing were heard from Honolulu Harbor on Wednesday morning as Hawaii welcomed over 260 cadets of the Mexican Navy.

The crew docked the 168-foot Cuauhtemoc, also known as the Tall Ship, before hearing a speech from San Francisco-based Deputy Consul General of Mexico Vincente Sanchez Ventura.

For 41 years, the boat has taken the cadets around the world during their training, which leaders and community members alike value.

“The Cuauhtemoc ship is the ambassador of the Mexican culture, and every visit spreads that, in every country,” Sanchez Ventura said. “That’s why the cadets are learning about their culture, but also spread the culture.”

Crowds lined Pier 10, eager to be first to tour the ship, while the American and Mexican Navies began their ceremonious welcomes.

University of Hawaii Manoa Spanish Professor Paul Chandler and others who came to see the show, put on by both Mexican and Hawaiian singers and dancers, saw it as a great opportunity.

“I think it’s important to share language and culture,” Chandler said. “There’s a large Mexican population here in Hawaii. Our first cowboys came, the paniolos. (We have) long connections and it’s good to strengthen them and keep the contacts going.”

The consulate, joined by the cadets, will meet with local political leaders at the state Capitol and City Council and partake in a soccer match against Naval station troops.

The crew of the tall ship will be conducting tours and hosting luncheons on June 5 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., June 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and June 7 to 9 at 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

The cadets will set sail Monday morning to Japan, with a scheduled tour through Asia and Oceania to follow.
