5 Spots In Boston For Guaranteed Street Parking Any Time Of The Year

Parking in Boston is a nightmare. However, there are some streets in Boston with ample space 24/7. You just didn't know about them...until now.

Ameera Hammouda

The Boston parking scene is disastrous. There’s no sugarcoating it. From 2020 to 2021, over 900,000 parking tickets were issued in Boston, earning the city over $50 million that year in revenue from parking violations.

According to Spot Angels, a parking app that helps drivers source parking in their city, the most common violation was “meter unpaid.” There are a few reasons one might not pay a meter in Boston unintentionally:

  • The signs make no sense
  • You pay for the wrong zone due to conflicting signage
  • The meter expires because parking time is limited

worst parking boston

These are all frequent frustrations of parking in Boston . When creating this list of parking spot recommendations, we assessed parking spots that:

  • Almost always have spaces available
  • State rules with clear signage
  • Extendable (can renew the parking space and don’t need to move to a new zone)

Our Boston street parking recommendations

No more gatekeeping. We’re sharing a few of our team’s tried and trusted spots to park in Boston. Still, it is recommended to always do your research and take note of signs in the area.

Arlington Street in Back Bay

Back Bay accumulated the most parking tickets of any Boston neighborhood as demonstrated by the chart above. Between commuters, trucks, and visitors it can be one of the most frustrating places to try and park.

Avoid popular streets like Newbury, especially on the weekends as restaurant dining eats up spots and foot traffic makes everything more difficult. Head over to Arlington Street and shoot your shot.

Usually you’ll find a spot, but in the rare case you don’t, try Boylston Street from its intersection with Mass Ave. Drive the whole stretch of Boylston towards the Boston Public Garden and you’re also likely to find a spot!

1020 Beacon St. Brookline

Steps from Fenway, this long stretch of parking spaces travels all the way down through Brookline to Cleveland Circle. It follows the Green Line C train. Enter the zone and park for up to 4 hours. You can add time later and don’t need to move your vehicle!

Channelside Lot Southie

Seaport might actually be one of the worst places for parking, unless you don’t mind paying $40+ for a garage. Channelside lot in Southie is just a few blocks away and 24hr parking is only $5!

11 Charles Street in front of DeLuca’s Market

Forget about the waterside end of Charles Street! There is almost never parking there. However, move a little farther down in front of DeLuca’s and there’s usually an abundance of 2-hour parking on either side of the street.

Mass Ave. in Cambridge near Porter Square

Parking in Cambridge is much simpler than Boston. Even in the highest foot traffic areas like Harvard Square, you can generally find parking if you explore the side streets. The long stretch of Mass Ave, near Honeycomb Creamery, is a great choice when looking for an abundance of parking.

Other trusted parking spots from Bostonians

The parking map below showcases the spots in Boston with the most tickets. The yellow-colored areas signify the least amount of parking violations while darker oranges and reds signify the most.

After sharing some of our secret parking spaces, we also polled our Boston Uncovered audience on their trusted parking spots. As expected, many kept their secret spots to themselves. However, some were willing to share and here is what they said:

  • Post Office Square
  • Parking near the Boston Tea Party Museum

Using a parking app

Apps can also be helpful, especially for long term parking or monthly parking passes. Paying upfront at garages generally constitutes inflated prices and you also might not guarantee yourself a spot, especially in high travel seasons. We recommend the following apps below for long-term parking in Boston:

Boston Parking – The Official SpotHero Guide

Looking for parking in boston.

The Hub of the Universe, as Boston has been called by locals, is a global destination for tourists, travelers, business professionals and students boasting fine institutions, cultural hot-spots and plenty of history. Like most big cities, though, parking can be kind of tricky, and there are plenty of Boston parking rules and parking bans that you’ll have to navigate during your visit.

boston parking cta

We’ve put together thisBoston parking guide to help out with your parking situation. This guide will cover everything you need to find the best spot for your car in Beantown. We’ll get you there and parked without any of those unfortunate Boston parking tickets you’ve heard so much about! We’ve teamed up with SpotHero , the innovative new service that allows drivers to find and reserve discounted parking spots all throughout the country. They’ve even got a handy app for drivers! Here, we’ll outline some of the best tips for parking in Boston along with SpotHero.

Flying In and Out

Visitors to Boston will likely wing it into Logan Airport , located right in East Boston. The airport allows for plenty of parking options. There’s a large central garage as well as several lots that allow for shuttle bus service to different terminals. You’ll find relatively cheap rates that start at $18 a day (economy) or $27 a day (regular). There are also lots of parking options in the neighborhoods around the airport. The SpotHero guide to parking in East Boston  provides advice on multiple spots and even has a handy Boston parking map for you to check out.

Visiting the Neighborhoods

boston

Neighboring Cambridge is full of fine institutions (MIT and Harvard, in particular) but the same parking problems. Luckily, there are a wealth of options here too and there are lots available if you want to head up into the burgeoning Davis Square  or Porter Square   neighborhoods.

Foodies will want to head into the North End to dine on the area’s delicious Italian dishes. Finding on-street parking here is next to impossible (and it’s super easy to get ticketed). Stick with the SpotHero recommendations for parking spotsand don’t take any chances with a randomban. The same advice goes for the other great restaurant area in the South End -use the SpotHero app, find a space and enjoy your time!

Heading to the Game

Boston proper is home to three beloved sports teams the Celtics, Bruins and the Red Sox. The first two play at the T.D Bank Gardennear downtown; use the SpotHero app for the Bruins  or the Celtics  and avoid missing that opening puck drop or tip-off in a vain search for parking. The Red Sox coming off a World Championship play at  Fenway Park near Bookline and Downtown. If you’re driving in, reserving a spot is key. The 1912-constructed ballpark wasn’t really built out with automobiles in mind! The Boston area also boasts the New England Patriots, who play to the south of the city in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Major League Soccer’s New England Revolution share the stadium as well. Avoid getting squeezed for parking charges and use the SpotHero sitebefore you start tailgating.

Taking in a Show

The big concert venue in Boston is the T.D. Bank Garden ; just like in the case of a Bruins/Celtics game, you’ll want to get your spot early as the area tends to get super-crowded during events. There is also an active theater district around downtown, headlined by the Colonial Theatre and the Wilbur Theatre . There’s also a mid-size concert venue, the House of Blues ,located right around FenwayPark.

Take the "t" .

Boston's public transportation system is operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), but locals know it simply as the  "T" . It offers subway, bus, trolley car, and boat service to just about everywhere in the Greater Boston area and beyond. Subway stops are color-coded - Red Line, Green Line, Blue Line, Orange Line, or Silver Line.

To ride the T, you'll need a CharlieCard or CharlieTicket, which can be purchased at most subway station vending machines and select convenience stores. The basic fare for a one-way ride is $2.40, and kids 11 years and younger ride free. Plus, your Charlie Card will provide you with more than 75 discounts on attractions during your visit!

The "T's" LinkPass gives visitors unlimited travel on Subway, Local Bus, Inner Harbor Ferry, and Commuter Rail Zone 1A for one day ($11.00) or seven days ($22.50). More than 500 fare-vending machines are located throughout all subway stations.

Local buses feature expanded late-night service; fares are $1.70.

Commuter Rail

Operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, Boston's Commuter Rail services the outlying Boston suburbs. Service is available from several T stations, but most departures take place at South Station, North Station, or Back Bay Station.

For specific information on routes and schedules, call the MBTA at 617-222-3200 or visit  mbta.com.

Garage At Post Office Square

Welcome to Boston’s Premier Parking Facility!

In the heart of Boston’s financial district, located under the landmark Norman B. Leventhal Park , this full-service parking facility is both convenient and pleasant to use. Enter on Pearl Street or Congress Street. From the gracious main lobby with its high-quality finishes, fresh flower arrangement and efficient cashier services, to the spacious well-lit parking levels with easy-to-follow directional signs and colorful graphics, you will find The Garage At Post Office Square to be Boston’s most convenient and enjoyable place to park!

News & Updates

Jayne’s Flowers is in our lobby on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

Dirty windshield  we installed a windshield washing station on our lobby level near the tire inflation station.  .

Going Even Greener and Leading the Way

While many businesses were hibernating during the pandemic, we installed 30 more Level 2 Electric Vehicle charging stations, bringing our facility total to 41 stations! Our stations are part of the Chargepoint network. There are eleven on the Lobby Level and six near the elevators on each of Levels 1-5. There is no fee to use the stations, but regular parking rates apply as you exit the Garage. In order to provide access to the stations, EV’s must be moved to regular parking spaces once fully charged.  In April 2024, 489 unique drivers used our stations for 1,432 charging sessions!   We have avoided more than 622,500 kg of greenhouse gasses, the equivalent of planting more than 15,962 trees and letting them grow for 10 years.

Post Office Square is mitigating 100% of its electricity footprint with renewable energy under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement, partnering with MIT and Boston Medical Center, to purchase all of the output from Summit Farms, a solar project in North Carolina. It is the largest renewable energy project ever built in the US through an alliance of buyers and in aggregate, the expected 146 gigawatt-hours of emissions-free power per year will result in the abatement of 119,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions — the equivalent of removing 25,250 cars from the road. Learn more about the project here.

Why is Blue Green?

To conserve drinking water, The Garage at Post Office Square has recently installed an Integrated Water Management & Green Infrastructure system which uses reclaimed groundwater to flush our toilets. We use a blue dye to easily identify the non-potable water.

Integrated Water Management & Green Infrastructure

The Garage at Post Office Square pioneered several novel and award-winning construction technologies. As part of our sustainability effort to conserve resources and enhance efficiencies, Friends of Post Office Square has invested in an innovative system which allows the Garage to use much less water, without minimizing our first-class building operation.

The seven-level Garage extends 80 feet beneath the street to a depth where groundwater saturates the soils. In order to prevent flooding, groundwater is collected in a deep well beneath Level 6. Since the Garage opened in 1990, excess groundwater in the well has been pumped into Boston’s combined stormwater/sewer system.

Our new groundwater reclamation system allows us to re-utilize the groundwater to flush the toilets and wash the floors in the Garage, reducing the amount of high-quality drinking water the Garage uses in its operation. We are saving thousands of gallons of drinking water every week, water that is transported to Boston all the way from the Quabbin Reservoir in Western Massachusetts. By using the groundwater before it is pumped off-site, we are also dramatically reducing the Garage’s sewer output.

Our project conserves drinking water, recycles the local groundwater that is pumped for dewatering, reserves treatment capacity at the MWRA treatment plant at Deer Island, and reduces our annual water and sewer bills by more than $10,000. The design is an example of Integrated Water Management and Green Infrastructure – a new way of thinking about our water resources. It focuses on sustainability of resources: using local sources of water and re-thinking our use of limited high-quality drinking water for non-potable purposes.

6 Ways to Get Around Boston: A Guide to Efficient Transportation

If you are visiting and need to get around Boston, the public transportation system is the best way option.

A car rental may be tempting, but the only time it’s worth driving is if you’re heading to a destination that is not easily accessible by public transportation.

How to Get Around Boston

As a management consultant, I worked in the Boston area for a year and always had a rental car which was funded by the firm.

When I rented a car in Boston, I found that not only can driving be a nightmare, but parking is also nearly impossible and comes at a premium.

As with most larger cities, I recommend that you avoid being on the road during traffic hours as much as possible because believe it or not, it’s much easier to drive and find parking in New York City than in Boston.

On a more recent trip to Boston, it was still easy to get around Boston using the city’s efficient public transportation system. However, we didn’t need transportation for every part of town, and we were able to visit the most popular areas of Boston on foot.

The city is very walkable. When visiting the historic district and downtown zones, it’s best to travel on foot (and don’t forget the strollers for the little ones).

However, just note that historic streets are cobbled and may be difficult to navigate with wheels.

Now get ready to take some great photos in Boston , here’s a roundup of the best ways to get around town.

The Boston T

Boston has an incredibly good public transit system called the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority), or to locals, the “T” and it is the most popular way to get around Boston.

I found the maps easy to read and we used them to get to all the places on our itinerary. It is the best mode of transportation in Boston, the suburban towns, and smaller cities within Eastern Massachusetts.

The “T” has five color-coded branches that run above and below ground. There is also a map at every station and on most of the individual cars and ticket kiosks.

Daily or weekly passes are also available. You just need to decide if you need a CharlieCard (a plastic reusable card) or a CharlieTicket (a paper ticket).

You can also pay cash; they are accepted on buses and trolleys with fare boxes.

And there is good news! Unlike cities like London, you can get around in Boston with no extra fee for peak periods. All fares are the same no matter what time of day or day of the week that you travel.

You can also pay for more than one person if you have a CharlieCard (but it doesn’t apply to CharlieTickets), so there is no need to purchase multiple cards.

Just tap your crew through the turnstile and keep it moving! Activation for the CharlieCard begins on first use.

Cost & Service:

  • One-way – $2.40, transfers included
  • Day pass – $12.75 for unlimited rides in 24 hours
  • Weekly pass – $22.50
  • Service – 5 AM to 12Am and later on weekends

I imagine traveling on the “T” has become a challenge over the years, just as it has in Chicago due to crowding and undesirable behaviors. Just keep your wits about you, secure your belongings, and avoid peak travel periods (before and after business hours).

Many cities are making an effort to be more eco-friendly, and Boston is no exception.

With the development of new street lanes and paths, biking has become a safer and more economical mode of transportation.

It’s a healthy way to get around Boston and bikes make it easy to navigate the street and sidewalks.

The bike-sharing program is called BlueBikes and with the app, you can manage membership and rentals.

The plans are created to benefit frequent riders so if you sign up and cancel the membership, you are still responsible for the remaining balance.

Some companies, like Urban AdvenTours, rent bikes on an hourly or daily plan. Renting a bike is a great way to see the city, get exercise, and create your own sightseeing agenda.

If the weather is great, it will be easy to get around Boston as a first-time visitor or take a ride along the harbor.

The Boston Trolley

We were huge fans of the HopOn-HopOff when our stay is short, and we want to see as much as possible in a short amount of time. We rode this tourist bus and saw quite a few famous sites in half a day, which allowed us to explore other parts of the city during a long weekend.

Tickets can be obtained at the booths and select hotel concierges.

The Green line is the most traveled route and travels through the Historic Downtown, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, North End, and Seaport districts. The first HoHo stop begins at Faneuil Hall and tours start daily at 9:00 AM. The last tour leaves at 5:00 PM during peak season (4:00 PM, non-peak).

Buses are inexpensive to get around Boston, but it is also slower than the “T”. However, the savings are hardly worth it unless you are traveling a short distance.

Cost: $1.70, transfer included

There are two harbor ferry routes that travel in the harbor and it’s a great way to see the city from a different perspective and get around Boston harbors.

The Charlestown Inner Harbor Ferry runs from Boston to Charlestown, and the Hingham/Hull Commuter Ferry travels between Boston, Logan International Airport, Hingham, and Hull.

Prices are affordable and it would be a nice way to spend time on the harbor at a low price point if the trip didn’t finish in the blink of an eye.

Cost: $4 – $10, one way

Commuter Trains

A commuter train is a great option to get around Boston or outside the city, for taking a day trip to Providence, Rhode Island, or accessing nearby suburbs. Prices vary depending on the start and end zone.

Compared to the Peter Pan bus, a trip to Providence will cost about $16.00 for a one-way fare and both methods are close in duration for traveling from city to city.

The commuter weekend ticket is valid on Saturdays and Sundays for unlimited travel between zones and only costs $10. That’s a nice deal for a one-day getaway out of Boston.

Cost: $2.40 – $13.25 one way

Traveling Outside of Boston

How to get from boston logon airport to downtown boston.

Depending on the proximity of your destination, you’ll take the Silver Line (1, 2, or 3) and transfer it to one or more of the color-coded “T” lines. Transfers are free.

The cost of a one-way fare on the Silver line is the same as the color-coded lines. Line 3 will take you to Chelsea or to the Blue Line which takes you to historic downtown Boston. Lines 1 and 2 will transport you near to the Seaport District or Chinatown.

We found this mode of transportation very simple to understand and follow when we were leaving Boston. Just follow the same steps in reverse.

Cost: $2.40, one-way

If you are up for a one-day adventure elsewhere like a tour of the Newport Mansions, here are some ways to get to other common destinations around Boston.

How to Get from Boston to Cambridge

We took the “T” that connects to the Red line and exited at either Harvard station.  You can also exit at Central Station.

We wanted to visit outside of Boston to see the Harvard University Campus and take photos. It is a beautiful neighborhood, and the ride was about 30 minutes from the city center.

How to Get from Boston to New York City

A bus from Boston to New York takes about five hours on a good day with a bit of traffic. We found tickets for $7 per person with Megabus.

Another bus line is Peter Pan but the tickets tend to be slightly more expensive but under $60 one-way. A quick trip by train leaves from South Station with service via Amtrak Acela and the lowest price you will find is in the $30 range.

Driving is about 4 hours, more so with traffic. The drive from Boston to tour New York City is an easy 220-mile stretch. The only other costs you will aside from gas are tolls.

Flights are in the $100 range but consider the time spent getting to the airport, snaking the TSA line, and potential flight delays.

Cost: Varies

How to Get from Boston to Rhode Island

We caught the Peter Pan bus from Boston South Station to Rhode Island Convention Center stop. The ride was less than an hour. The bus was quite comfortable and with air-conditioning. At the time, the ticket cost us about $30 per person round trip.

Since it was only 25% full, we had a lot of space to spread out and we loved that the bus was equipped with charging stations at every seat.

How to Get from Boston to Martha’s Vineyard

While you can drive a car in Martha’s Vineyard, the only way to transport the vehicle is via the Steamship Transport Authority.

So, you’ll need to get to one of two ports: Woods Hole in Falmouth, MA or Hyannis in Barnstable, MA (Cape Cod). Assuming you don’t have a car, the easiest way is to leave from Boston Logan Airport and a Peter Pan bus to Woods Hole terminal.

Then walk about 10 minutes to the port. The trip is 2 to 2.5 hours in duration. From Boston Logan, you can also take the Plymouth & Brockton bus to the port, the savings is $2 or $3 dollars.

Cost: $30 range

Final Thoughts on How to Get Around in Boston

I walked a lot in Boston and my feet were hurting at the end of the day, but I easily get 30,000 steps logged on any given vacation day.

Overall, Boston has a great public transportation system that is very comprehensive. Like Chicago’s transportation system and New York, the system is expansive and makes it easy to explore beyond the familiar tourism spots.

We used it to visit South Seaport, the Isabella Gardner Museum, to get to the airport, and to take a 2-day side trip to Rhode Island.

On my next visit to Boston, I would use public transportation to get around Boston in a heartbeat.

If you have a car, the New England area is a lovely drive especially in the fall when the jewel-colored leaves are on display.

Happy trails!
