Review: Staub La Theiere Teapot

I am a tea fanatic, and I have an ever-growing number of vessels in rotation depending on what I’m brewing. My cabinets overflow with assorted Yixing pots for different types of Oolong; borosilicate orbs for flower tea; gaiwans and tetsubins ranging from austere to ornate; grand silver sets and gorgeous vintage porcelain for serving afternoon tea; my eternally useful Kati cups … The list goes on and on, perhaps in a way that only tea-obsessed people, aka “teaple,” would deem sane.

Recently, I needed to replace the kettle I used to heat the water for all of those vessels. I could have saved money by continuing to use the saucepan we switched to after my kettle grew legs, but my husband kept burning himself and I’m always up for a kitchen present [upon proof-reading this review, my husband objected to my revealing that he “can’t boil water”]. I do like electric kettles, and I am still planning to get a Breville tea maker (it will be front and center when I teach tea classes this winter), but for now I wanted a “simple” stovetop piece.

To select my new pot, I turned to the brands of cookware I already use and love, and ultimately wound up purchasing a Staub La Theiere. It is a teapot – not a kettle – but it can be used on the stovetop. I had been coveting it for a quite a while, but didn’t purchase it because the size was a tad smaller than I wanted, and the price was a tad more than I wanted to spend. I caved when I found the Staub La Theiere on Amazon Prime for $139 (many stores list it at $243 on sale for $169.99).

24 hours later, the round, one-quart, cherry red enameled cast iron Staub La Theiere was on my stove. I was immediately impressed with its flawless finish, the not-really-small-at-all size (6-inch diameter and 4-inch depth not including lid and handles), and the modern shape. It’s so nice it makes me want to paint the kitchen!

Despite my watching it, the pot did boil. 24 ounces of water took around 10 minutes on an open flame burner set to medium-low (it is important, as always, that the flame is below the pot; never let the flames lick up the sides of your cookware). The knob, lid and handles did get slightly hot, but not excessively so. Still, it is recommended that you use oven mitts. Also, Staub cautions, “when removing the lid be sure to angle the lid to direct the steam away from you.” Regarding the knob, I wrote to Staub to see if their finials (cow, pig, rooster, rabbit, snail and fish) would fit on the La Theiere, and the answer is “yes.” So, if you’d like to personalize your pot by switching to one of Staub’s fancy figural knobs, it will work.

The Staub La Theiere teapot is a substantial piece; at 5 pounds it is heavy, but not too heavy. Because it is cast iron, the water will stay heated for an extended amount of time. Additional features as listed on the Staub website are:

• Made in France • Heavy weight; tight-fitting lid retains moisture • Oven Safe up to 500°F • Nickel steel knob • Smooth enamel bottom works on all stovetops • Each piece is one of a kind • Dishwasher safe

Another feature is the unique way that Staub incorporated the spout. It is half built into the wide lid, half built into the pot, and it makes maintaining the pot a breeze. It fits together easily and securely when you put the lid on the pot and flip the handles into position. I have used it numerous times since it arrived and have not experienced any dripping or dribbling from the spout, and don’t expect that I will.

I usually designate a pot or kettle for water – and only water – so it doesn’t pick up any random flavors or residue. However, Staub’s interior is non-absorbent and easy to clean (as stated above it is dishwasher safe – I would NEVER! – but hand washing is recommended), so it’s possible I will use the included infuser to make tea in the pot. It would be like an extra-large tetsubin! Ultimately, in my small kitchen I prefer my pieces to have multiple uses – my tarte tatin pan stands in as a fruit bowl or serving dish ; my 16-quart stock pot doubles as an ice bucket, etc. – so I may give some of the other suggested uses a whirl (cider, soup, etc.).

I am thrilled with my Staub La Theiere purchase: the size is actually perfect, and the quality justifies the price. The ONLY drawback I can think of – and I really have to think hard to find one – is that that the Staub teapot doesn’t have a whistle the way a kettle might. I worry that Staub will sell a whistling teapot in the future and I won’t buy it because I already have this one, and its superior construction will last forever. Then again, maybe I can start collecting Staub teapots in ALL of the styles and colors – I’m sure my “teaple” would completely understand.

So cute, and keeps the tea hot for a good long time. The only thing I don’t like is there is no convenient way to tell if the water is boiling. I’ve learned to hold my ear close to hear if it’s boiling. But there is no way to design a fix for that that I can think of. Anyhow, I still love it. Recommended. And it looks cool in the kitchen!

I have several Staub cookware items all of which I love. The workmanship, quality and functionality are unsurpassed. I've been looking at Staub's teapot for some time trying to decide if I liked the design. When I found it at cutleryandmore.com in the gorgeous grenadine color and at a lower price than anywhere else I'd seen it, I decided to order it. Am I ever glad I did! It is the perfect size and looks beautiful sitting on my cooktop! A plus in design(in my opinion) is that the top integrates the spout which makes for easy and thorough cleaning. My daughter started making tea after learning about healthy aspects of tea consumption. So I purchased this vessel to give the craft of brewing tea a try. Very high quality is apparent as with most all Staub products. A tea ball attaches to the lid of the pot in which loose tea or tea bags can be placed. This facilitates easy removal once the tea has steeped. The handles lock the lid in place when pouring the tea. This is a nice feature. The caste iron construction keeps the tea hot for much longer and its handsome features are always remarked upon. The one quart size is nice for making tea but limits it if you wish to boil water in larger quantities.

I finally decided to splurge on this teapot after breaking yet another ceramic one. This is an absolutely beautiful teapot, one that I will use for the rest of my life and leave to my niece in my will! It also keeps the tea hotter than a ceramic or China one. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it doesn't hold as much tea as I would like and it's heavy, since it's enamel-coated iron like all Staub cookware. We got the basil one to go with our remodeled green kitchen, and it's so gorgeous we keep it out all the time on the counter.

Tea drinkers who want to take their tea with them can easily do so with a few insights and the right gear. You can take your tea to the park with friends or use a portable tea infuser for taking a cold-brewed oolong on a hike or bike ride.

I will show you some of the best ways to travel with tea by taking your teaware and tea to go. There are many creative ways to take your favorite tea with you!

I've used this tea infuser mug I bought from Tea Forte for years. It has a stainless steel infusing basket that sits inside and a lid that keeps the tea warm. The inverted top can then set the basket on to catch any drippings after the tea is finished steeping.

You can bring your favorite tea leaves to work and keep them stored in an airtight tin and use the hot water from the office coffee machine for steeping.

Another tea infuser travel mug I love is this steeping mug and infuser from The Tea Spot simply because of the beautiful design and generous size. It even has a steeping guide printed on the back. The mug is double-walled ceramic allowing for excellent insulation. I bought this tea travel mug set for my daughter, who takes it everywhere!

Best Electric Tea Kettle

The other option is to bring an electric kettle if you're going to be in one place for a while, such as an office. I like the Bonavita  or the Cuisinart model because they have variable temperatures and elegant designs. Bonavita does make less expensive models that you wouldn't mind leaving at work.

Best Travel Tea Tumbler

A quality traveler tea infuser tumbler is a must-have when you're taking tea to go. Most are well-insulated, making them perfect for hot or iced tea.

What to look for in a good tea infuser tumbler:

• Double-walled stainless steel to keep hot or cold for hours.
• A good seal that does not leak.
• A screw-on lid to survive accidental dropping or tossing in backpacks.
• A large stainless steel removable infuser.
• Easy to take apart and clean.

My daughter bought me a travel tea tumbler from Teavana, which has a built-in stainless steel infuser…it is the best thing ever. I bring this whenever I travel. I can even store tea inside the tumbler in a sealed bag while it's not being used. I highly recommend investing in a quality tea tumbler if you don't have one already. This tea thermos keeps my tea piping hot for hours.

The Tea Spot Mountain Tea Tumbler

Now that Teavana is no longer, I looked for a replacement tea tumbler to recommend to my readers. As you know, I love The Tea Spot , and I came across their Mountain Tea Tumbler from their Steepware collection, which I love. It checks off all of my must-haves for a great tea tumbler.

I much prefer the stainless steel-lined tumblers and the stainless steel infuser baskets. They're more durable and easier to keep clean. I'm not a fan of the plastic infuser baskets. They're harder to clean and stain too easily.

Food-grade stainless steel, glass, and porcelain are my first choices for any food or beverage because they are chemically inert. There's no need to worry about harmful chemicals leaching into your drink.

Best Glass Tea Tumbler

The urban glass tumbler from The Tea Spot is another of my favorites. I tend to use this for my cold-brew tea. I like the glass so I can see the cold tea infusions. The generous-sized stainless steel basket effortlessly infuses my favorite oolongs.

You can also use it for steeping hot tea since it's constructed of borosilicate glass. The stainless steel lids come off at both ends for easy cleaning. The cork sleeve and strap make this tumbler easy to hold and carry. The design is stylish and fits my car cup holders or bike beverage holders.

Best Travel Tea Set for Gong Fu Brewing

Taking a teapot, cups, and leaves can be a hassle when you're on the go, especially if you like to brew your tea gong fu style.

Generally, gong fu brewing uses more tea leaves than water, with considerably short brewing times. The process is repeated to extract the varying flavors released from the same tea leaves.

This is a style of brewing that uses a small teapot of some sort. It could be a Gaiwan (guy wan), Yixing (ee shing) teapot, or small porcelain teapot.

A Gaiwan is usually made from porcelain, while a Yixing is unglazed and made from red or purple clay. This is purposeful. The clay absorbs the tea flavor over time and continues adding to the brewed tea's complexity. This is why dedicating Yixing to one type of tea is recommended.

Best Tea Filter Bags

I don't mind the hassle of bringing my tea, but I want to keep things simple. Bringing bagged tea is the simplest solution; if you choose that route, you have a few options.

• Buy a good quality bagged tea. I recommend several online retailers that carry quality bagged tea.
• Buying quality loose-leaf tea packed in sachets and placing them in a travel tin is the easiest way to make tea on the road.
• Usually, I will bring a good quality full-leaf tea in a pyramid bag from Adagio or The Tea Spot and brew my tea with whatever hot water is available from the hotel or café.
• You can also make your own bagged tea from your favorite loose-leaf tea.

If you want to make your tea sachets, the best ones I've found are made by Bstean tea filter bags. I like these because they are large and easily hold a healthy teaspoon of loose-leaf tea with room for the leaves to expand.

They come in two sizes and are made of unbleached natural paper, so there's no funny taste in your tea. The drawstring design is better than the fold-over flap style. I recommend buying the larger size for loose-leaf teas.

Best Travel Tea Sets

Zens Lifestyle makes clean, straightforward design teaware. Many of their products have won design awards. Their portable teaware is excellent to use on short trips. They have two different sizes. The smaller one is for individuals, and the larger set is for two people.

Best Practices When Traveling with Loose Leaf Tea

• Only pack easygoing and simple-to-steep teas, like black teas or robust oolongs that can take boiling water.

• Pack teas that use boiling point water since the hottest water available in hotels and cafés are boiling point temperature.
• Think twice before bringing teas requiring lower temperatures or pack a thermometer.

Can You Bring Tea on a Plane?

• In general, yes, don't worry.
• I've never had any problems with tea sachets in bags placed in my carry-on.
• You shouldn't have problems with dried food products as long as they are in sealed packaging.
• Customs officials don't care unless the declared goods' stated value is exceptionally high or it's an agricultural product. Dried and processed tea is an agricultural product. However, it's not a live agricultural product.
• To be safe, I would perhaps store the tea in a tea canister or bag instead of loosely in a ziplock sandwich bag, making it look like something else entirely. Until you smell it, of course!
• International travelers are permitted to bring without restriction any quantity of products composed solely of   tea leaves ( Camellia sinensis:  includes black tea, green tea, oolong, dark tea, white tea, and yellow tea). As with all agricultural products, you must declare the product at entry. Source

Forgo Tea to Go

Maybe you couldn't be bothered and have decided to just take your chances and not travel with tea. Truthfully, if you're traveling to a tea-drinking country, chances are you may find some excellent teas to try. Explore and drink whatever tea is available where you're going.

I have a friend who travels from England to the United States and always brings her tea. It's in the form of tea bags, which most Brits drink. But it is still so much better than the majority of black-bagged grocery store tea available here in the states.

On the flip side, when we traveled to Italy, I knew the chances of getting good tea were pretty slim. I was very excited when we came upon a specialty tea café in the Piazza Navona in Rome, but unfortunately, it was closed for renovations. As was the Trevi Fountain, an omen telling me I must return.

Instead, I discovered some excellent espresso, cappuccino, and red wine. My point is that a short time without your favorite tea won't hurt and may open a world of new beverage discoveries.

This cup-pot combo is straight-up a great way to make tea. It’s very practical and yet the results are still top-tier.

If you don’t have the space, time, or energy for a full Gongfu-style tea set, this is for you.

I keep one of these on my desk at home in case I need to really get work done and can’t do the whole tea ceremony, and I also have a second set just for traveling and taking to friends’ houses.

One note - because this set doesn’t come with a pitcher, you need to be sure to only add as much water as you need to drink your next cup. Otherwise, you will be left with extra tea inside the pot which keeps over-steeping.

I’ve never found myself feeling too passionate about a piece of kitchen hardware.

But then I started looking for a teapot.

As I browsed through the options, I found the choices to be particularly wanting. Some of the most beautiful teapots were not particularly usable, and some of the most usable teapots were not particularly beautiful. I also, based simply on my personal preference, wanted something that wouldn’t annoyingly emit a shrill whistle when brought to a boil. When these are your requirements for a teapot, you begin to see your options are limited.

With this in mind, I was both surprised and delighted to find the ceramic one quart teapot from Staub .

Part of the challenge in looking for a tea kettle was finding one that felt right in my house. Our home has a cozy kitchen with a base range stove and little room for kitchen appliances, and though neither my wife or myself find ourselves making tea on a nightly basis, we do make it regularly enough to warrant a kettle and teapot of some sort. The Staub teapot is just the kitchen appliance, fitting neatly into a drawer when unused, but always ready to be brought into action. Even when it’s unused, the teapot is so aesthetically pleasing, it’s actually a major benefit to the home. The kitchen eyepiece is created in a beautiful enameled cast iron and comes in several colors like black, “basil” green, “graphite grey”, and “cherry” red.

One of the things I enjoy most about the Staub Kettle is the way it can play the role of several kitchen devices at once. Unlike some teapots, it can act as a kettle and heat water up straight on the stove. Unlike some kettles, it can act as a teapot with the included tea ball, and go straight from the stove to a serving tray. The pot is even versatile enough for cooking soups or sauces, and the pouring spout can come in extremely handy. This minimal reduction in clutter is a major benefit to my small kitchen ecosystem.

Part of the beauty of the Staub teapot is its minimal and elegant design. There’s not a whole more to it than a pot, a lid, and a handle. Yet, it’s these components and materials which are a particular trademark for Staub, a cookware company based out of France that specializes in enameled cast iron kitchenware. Staub’s use of cast iron makes their products durable and long lasting, and their use of enamel makes their teapots easy to clean and particularly beautiful. The entire teapot looks decidedly finished and beautiful, in part due to its simplicity.

The Staub’s design has a minimal but beautiful branding, with “La Theiere” (the teapot) and “Staub” written across the top, and a stainless steel knob handle in between. The only other writing on the teapot is inside the lid, where the words “Made in France” are subtly embossed within.

The Staub teapot’s handles are well placed, and fold down to provide easy access to the interior.

It’s truly the elegant design of each piece which makes the Staub more than a sum of its parts. The teapot handle is connected to the pot itself — two pieces of stainless steel that wrap around points on each side of the spout and then meet in the back. Folding these handles down provides easy access to the teapot (and allows you to take the lid on and off), and when combined above the lid as a singular handle, the design provides more than enough support for you to handle the teapot and pour out your tea.

There’s not much more branding than what’s found on the top of the Staub’s lid.

Using the teapot is a very simple affair. Simply put the kettle on the stove, turn the stove on, and let the heat do the rest of the work. One thing to note about the Staub: it is extremely hot to the touch and not meant to be handled without some sort of protection. Keeping the lid off means the metal handle will heat up quickly, and keeping the lid on will mean the lid’s knob will be too hot to the touch. It would be nice for Staub to have designed a solution for this, but as it goes, I simply make sure I have my hand covered while taking it off heat.

When the Staub teapot is on the stove it not only heats up quite nicely, it also looks great doing it.

Serving with the teapot is just as simple as heating it up. The heavy weight of the cast iron keeps the lid from slipping as you pour, and the entire pot keeps its heat for quite awhile due to the properties of the cast iron. On one occasion, I made some tea, had a cup, and then went back a good deal later for a second cup only to find that it was just as warm as the first. If you find yourself annoyed by having to reheat tea in the microwave, you might find as much enjoyment out of the Staub teapot as I do.

One negative thing about the Staub teapot is in regards to how much water it can hold. Though it’s sized at one quart, I typically fill it with much less water. This is because of the way the spout is designed: The teapot’s spout is cut in half, with half going to the pot itself and the other half going to the lid. Not only is the spout a bit low on the pot itself, it’s also not angled upward. So, if you bring a full quart of water to boil, it might spill out onto your stove top. I’d say the teapot is perfect for making tea for two or three, but any more and you might find yourself pouring a round and then heating up water once more for a second round. For my needs, this isn’t an issue, but a serious tea lover might be left searching for a bigger pot.

The Staub’s spout might be a problem for some, though the design is elegant and the two pieces stay firmly in place while pouring.

One of my favorite benefits of owning the Staub teapot is simply the way it looks in my kitchen. I’ve grown used to keeping it out on the back of the stovetop, simply because its design is beautiful enough to add a little charm to the kitchen. I’ve also considered how the durable and minimal nature of the kettle would make it great for camping, and plan to bring it along the next time I find myself fireside under the stars.

The simple and elegant design of the Staub teapot makes it just as great on a just-made fire as it is on a stovetop.

There is something special and unique about items which feel best-in-class. Priced at just about $170 (depending on which color you choose), the Staub certainly costs what you might expect from something in this category and made with these materials. To me, the price is absolutely worth it. Having the Staub teapot in my kitchen brings that best-in-class experience to the art of making tea.
