WWDC 2024: Apple announces new Safari with Highlights and 'distraction-free' Reader sidebar

Safari is getting an AI-powered revamp.

Apple didn't forget about its browser amidst the slew of AI features announced at WWDC . Safari now has a Highlights feature for recapping articles and web pages. In the new Safari release, users can get automated summaries of the page their browsing, such as directions to a location, more about TV shows they're reading about, or travel and hotel information.

Safari also has a reader module, which provides a "distraction free" way of browsing in a sidebar that shows a summary and table of contents. The idea is for users to quickly get a recap of a long document or web page without having to leave the page to, say, paste the text into ChatGPT for a summary.

AI-powered Safari is similar to what Microsoft has with its browser, Edge , which also has summarization features and a Copilot sidebar chat. Google Chrome was also testing an " SGE while browsing " feature, but hasn't announced anything about it lately.

Apple to unveil AI-enabled Safari browser alongside new operating systems

Safari getting new AI tools in iOS 18

safari new 2024

The software — expected to debut as Safari 18 later in 2024 — is currently undergoing evaluation alongside internal builds of Apple's next-generation operating system updates, namely iOS 18 and macOS 15 , according to people familiar with the matter. Should all of the new features make it to the release candidate stage, users will be treated to a new user interface (UI) for customizing popular page controls, a "Web eraser" feature, and AI-driven content summarization tools.

Intelligent Search - AI-enhanced browsing and text summarization

Engineers evaluating the latest builds of Safari 18 can find a toggle for the new page controls menu within the browser's address bar. The menu consolidates — and provides quick access to — old and new page control tools, among them being the browser's new "Intelligent Search" feature.

A screenshot of Arc Search on iPhone with a summary of an article from AppleInsider

This feature is not automatically enabled in test builds of Safari 18 and instead requires manual activation from the page controls menu. Once enabled, it's believed the tool leverages Apple's on-device AI technology — specifically the Ajax language-learning model — to identify topics and key phrases within a webpage for which to base the summarization.

In selecting key phrases, Apple's LLM software identifies sentences that provide explanations or describe the structure of objects, depending on the text in question. Words repeated within a text and key sentences are recognized as text topics.

These early indications suggest Apple is striving to deliver text summarization alongside Safari 18 later this year, though the exact implementation of this feature remains fuzzy.

Apple's text summarization features could be a response to rival generative AI tools, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. But Apple's on-device models and technologies like Private Relay could make the experience much more secure for users. Intelligent Search is also likely to be the same AI browser assistant that one X user hinted at a couple of weeks back.

Web Eraser for better content-blocking

Also accessible from the new page controls menu is a feature Apple is testing called "Web Eraser." As its name would imply, it's designed to allow users to remove, or erase, specific portions of web pages, according to people familiar with the feature.

The feature is expected to build upon existing privacy features within Safari and will allow users to erase unwanted content from any webpage of their choosing. Users will have the option to erase banner ads, images, text or even entire page sections, all with relative ease.

A screenshot of 1Blocker's element blocking feature that removes selected parts of a webpage

The erasure is said to be persistent, rather than limited to a browsing session. This means that Safari will remember the changes even after the original tab or window has been closed.

When visiting a web page with previously erased content, Safari will inform the user that the page has been modified to reflect their desired changes. The browser will also give the user the option to revert changes and restore the webpage to its initial, unaltered state.

As for where Apple got the inspiration for Web Eraser, the company could have Sherlocked the feature from the third-party app 1Blocker. The application features a similar way of erasing ads, where users would tap ads to make them disappear.

Updated UI will move key tools into one easy location

The new page controls menu referenced throughout this article will attempt to offer Safari 18 users quick and easy access to several options previously located across different menus and the Share Sheet. Running on pre-release versions of macOS 15, for instance, the menu also pulls in the "Aa" menu common on existing iPadOS versions of the browser. These include zoom options, webpage settings for privacy controls, content blocking options, extension shortcuts, and access to the new AI and erasure tools.

A mockup image of desktop Safari with an iPad-like menu that includes AI and erase features.

These various options existed previously on macOS, but were found by navigating through the Safari settings menu. Having all of these controls in one central location in the Address Bar will make these options more discoverable for end users. Other options like on-page text search and reader mode are also in this menu.

This all suggests Apple intends to unite the iPadOS and macOS Safari UI paradigms when it unveils its new OS releases during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

AI-enhanced Visual Lookup feature could be available in 2025

Simultaneously, Apple is also working on a much more powerful visual search feature scheduled for integration sometime in 2025 that will allow users to obtain information on consumer products when browsing through images. People familiar with the tool say it's similar to the Visual Lookup feature, through which Siri can identify plants, pets and landmarks from photos.

An image of a black cat with big yellow eyes in Apple Photos with text below classifying it as a 'bombay'

Visual Search could be implemented as a system-wide feature. So, instead of surfacing search results in the Photos app, the user may be able to use Visual Search directly in Safari by selecting an image.

Given development of this tool is in the earlier stages, it remains unclear how Apple will ultimately go about implementing it. It also remains to be seen whether or not the feature will make it through internal testing.

The iPhone maker has expressed significant interest in artificial intelligence and more recently published research related to on-device language learning models. This goes hand in hand with widespread rumors about several other AI-powered software features, many of which are expected to make their debut later this year with iOS 18.

Another big year for Safari

From its inception, Safari was always meant to rival existing web browsers.

A Flickr login screen with password auto fill shown as a pop-up

Safari was originally added to macOS as a means of replacing Microsoft's Internet Explorer for Mac, which was the default browser. Over the years, the app made its way to the iPhone , and has since received various upgrades over the years.

More recent versions of Safari provide users with personalized web suggestions, and allow for greater privacy protection with features such as iCloud Private Relay.

This latest set of enhancements only serves to better position Safari against the competition, in an ever-increasing landscape of generative AI tools and third-party ad-blockers.

While Apple tests many such features during different development stages, it is important to remember that not all of them make it to release. Apple has been known to delay features or cancel them entirely, so there's always a chance we may not see these new Safari features after all.

Along with Safari 18 and its associated improvements, we should also see a revamped Calculator with Math Notes make its way to iPadOS 18. Freeform Scenes and Adaptive Voice Shortcuts are new OS features, which are also expected to debut later this year.

Apple is expected to introduce various AI-related enhancements as part of iOS 18 and macOS 15, both of which should be announced at the company's annual WWDC on June 10.

As long as I can turn it off/hide it they can knock themselves out.

Will the web eraser feature remove pop up videos, such as the ones that appear on this site?

I use the 'Reader' function in Safari quite a bit, but sometimes it doesn't work very well. Seems like something that AI could help make better.

Web ads suck but how else do you think your favorite websites will stay in business? Are you prepared to pay a subscription to every site? I doubt it…

  • The new Tata Safari facelift has received major updates inside-out
  • The SUV is a lot more feature-packed now and get advanced tech
  • The Safari Facelift will be launched in India on October 17, 2023

Twenty-five years is a long time – and if you are an early millennial like me, back in 1998 you were just about in your teenage, and in awe of this sensation called the Tata Safari . Now I am closer to my mid-life crisis and a large, in-your-face SUV is just what the doctor has prescribed, but in the last 25 years, the Safari too has evolved. This child prodigy that we all fell in love with has also come of age. So, I spent a day with the new Safari to figure out how this facelifted version fits the needs of someone looking to buy an SUV, today.

The Safari has moved on from the angry look; that is just the Harrier now. Tata with this facelift has created more distinction between the two SUVs. While the Harrier continues to get horizontal and angular lines, the Safari has more vertical elements. What this has ensured is that instead of looking like a fighter about to enter the ring, the Safari now carries itself with the charm of an army officer!

In terms of design updates, this now gets a full-width LED bar with welcome and goodbye animation. While I am not a big fan of this new trend, to be honest, it does look nice on the Safari. The profile is more or less the same, but the new 19-inch alloys are very cool looking and fill up the wheel wells nicely.

As for the rear, the LED taillights also get a connected pattern, in line with the Safari’s design theme with vertical lines. Having said that, the rear isn’t the most appealing angle to look at the safari; the design makes it look a little smaller than it is.

11

I like the way the new Safari looks – sophisticated! One of the key reasons for that is also the choice of colours – the Cosmic Gold that I drove is quite unique, I am also keen on looking at the Supernova Copper and Lunar Slate.

3

At first glance, the inside looks very different from the earlier model. Though the layout is very much the same, to ensure that the SUV feels more premium Tata has played with the styling. The dashboard gets faux wood inlays with a pinstripe pattern, which helps in creating this upmarket image. And I think it looks particularly nice.

22

Although a bit gimmicky, the new steering, with the illuminated Tata logo, does get its fair share of attention and the infotainment system is a 12.3-inch unit on this top-end Accomplished persona. The instrument cluster is also big, 10.25-inch to be precise, with many customisation options. The Safari also gets a piano black panel for capacitive buttons for AC and other in-car controls, along with a rotary dial with a built-in screen for the terrain modes.

Tata Harrier 36

New features on the Safari include a powered tailgate (finally!), a 10-speaker JBL system, 7 airbags, wireless charger dual-zone AC, and rear sunshades. The system also comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with JBL modes that allow you to select between different predefined music settings.

20

The space in the car remains unchanged. If you intend to use the Safari as a chauffeur-driven car, then the boss mode at the back is handy. Also, the cooled seats at the back are a very valuable feature that not many in the market offer at this point. The third row is for children and has its own storage pockets, air vents and charging points with USB and type-C ports.

Performance

Tata Harrier 39

There is no change to the powertrain of the Safari. It runs on the same 2.0-litre diesel motor that makes 168 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. The key updates here are the paddle shifters and the switch to electric power steering, which make driving this relatively large SUV easier.

10

In city mode, it lacks bottom-end, this though can be quickly addressed by the use of paddle shifters or Sport mode. There are a few tweaks to the suspension as well and the ride is marginally better than before, not that it was ever too bad!

4

While overall I like the way Safari drives, I am not a big fan of the ADAS for everyday usage. It feels intrusive and the cabin is always ringing with one alert or another, since driving sense in our chaotic cities is abysmal.

25

On the highway, though it is a different story, with the adaptive cruise control, expressway driving becomes a lot easier.

With the ground clearance and the torque, some amount of soft-roading too is easy for the Safari. For those still looking for AWD, I think the wait will continue at least till 2025.

Tata Safari Features

Safety and Variant Details

Six airbags are standard across all five personas of the Safari. The base is the Smart Persona which comes with 17-inch alloys and 6 airbags. The Pure Persona gets a touchscreen infotainment system with 6 speakers, Android Auto, Apple Carplay and a reverse parking camera.

Also Read: Tata Safari Facelift: Variants Explained

13

The Adventure Persona above it, gets 18-inch wheels, 360-degree view cameras for parking and optional ADAS which is not updated to offer adaptive cruise control. The top-end Fearless and Dark persona gets 19-inch alloys, a bigger display and a music system along with 7 airbags.

12

For the ones looking at the Safari as an answer to their midlife crisis, they will have to look somewhere else. Without the AWD, the Safari is not a toy. This is a serious car for a mature buyer. For someone looking for a 6- and 7-seater family car with solid features, modern tech like ADAS, decent space and acceptable safety, the Tata Safari makes a very compelling case. Prices for the SUV will be announced on October 17, 2023, and I think a premium of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh, depending on the variant, would be a reasonable ask.

Apple WWDC recap: Tim Cook reveals 'Apple Intelligence' AI system, iOS 18, OpenAI partnership, and the all-new Siri

  • Apple's WWDC 2024 keynote outlined the new iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, iPadOS, watchOS, and Vision Pro software.
  • But the big news was Tim Cook unveiling a new generative AI system, Apple Intelligence, and a new Siri.
  • The Apple-OpenAI partnership was also made official, with ChatGPT integrated into Apple's software.

Insider Today

Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference keynote was a busy one.

It's Apple's state of the union for the software that underpins its various device families, such as iPhone, Mac, iPad, and the recently launched Vision Pro.

But Tim Cook also made room for a very big announcement, the news that was on everyone's mind : Apple's generative AI strategy, which is officially called "Apple Intelligence."

The generative AI system will be deeply integrated into iOS 18, the upcoming iPhone software, along with the latest Mac and iPad operating systems.

Apple's 13-year-old virtual assistant, Siri, is also getting a much-needed AI makeover. Executives showed various examples of how the new Siri powered by Apple Intelligence can help you complete daily tasks by accessing more granular actions within apps.

Apple also made its partnership with OpenAI official, bringing an optional ChatGPT integration to its software. This will allow users to tap into OpenAI's popular chatbot via Siri, or when completing tasks within apps, such as writing a story. Sam Altman was in attendance, though he didn't take the stage.

You can expect to see Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT integration arrive in the fall when the next iPhone launches.

But that was far from it — Apple announced a host of other features and software updates.

Luckily, we live-blogged the full WWDC keynote, so if you missed it, don't worry: Just scroll to the bottom of the page for the full recap.

Tim Cook closes things out.

safari new 2024

Apple Intelligence, the flagship feature revealed today, is coming to iPhone 15 Pro and iPads and Macs with M1 chips or later.

Tim Cook returns to wrap up the keynote, giving a brief overview of the announcements.

That's it for this year's WWDC — see you next year!

Apple details OpenAI partnership, which brings ChatGPT to Siri and other features.

safari new 2024

This is the result of Apple's deal with OpenAI, which Apple called a "pioneer" just now.

Apple says it's integrated ChatGPT into Mac and iOS, allowing Siri to tap into ChatGPT.

Apple says "You're in control" if you want to send anything to ChatGPT. But as a result of the partnership:

  • Siri will work with ChatGPT to provide better answers to questions
  • A Compose feature will use ChatGPT to create stories and text with a prompt
  • You can access this without a ChatGPT account and paying users will have more paid features
  • Siri will ask for permission before sharing your question with ChatGPT

Sam Altman reacted to the news on X, saying he was "very happy to be partnering with apple to integrate chatgpt into their devices later this year!"

Apple's clean-up tool uses AI to remove unwanted background details from photos.

Think of it like AI meets Photoshop. Apple says the clean-up tool uses Apple Intelligence to clean up the background of an image, removing an undesired detail.

Apple's 'Image Playground' is its spin on AI images.

safari new 2024

Image Playground will let you create images using already available characteristics — no need to write your own prompts but you can write them if you want, Apple says.

You'll get suggestions in Messages for original images generated based on your conversations. Image Playground will also be available in Apple's apps like Keynote, Pages, and Freeform.

But there will be a dedicated Image Playground app.

Generate your own emoji with 'Genmoji'

safari new 2024

Don't love the default emojis? Just use Apple Intelligence to generate your own "Genmoji" (see what they did there?)

Apple says Genmoji will help you "match any moment perfectly."

You can type a prompt in and get a custom emoji created instantly.

Bring on the Apple Intelligence demos!

safari new 2024

Apple is detailing a host of examples of how Apple Intelligence will help you "save time in so many ways."

Writing Tools:

  • Rewrite will suggest different versions of what you've written (improve tone to be friendlier, more professional, or more concise)
  • Summarize will help you add TL;DRs to your written messages
  • Smart Reply is coming to Mail: it can identify any questions you were asked over email
  • In the Mail app, you can see summaries of emails instead of short previews

Notifications are getting prioritized and summarized (the example shown off is when the group chat is blowing up, it'll sum up the conversation so you're all caught up).

We're seeing some demos of what the new Siri is capable of.

safari new 2024

Apple says this is the "start of a new era for Siri," and shows off some more examples of the new virtual assistant powered by Apple Intelligence.

  • Personal context: Siri can find the things you don't remember (like finding a photo of your license, extracting your ID number, and adding it to the digital form you're filling out)
  • Siri can track flights at your request and keep track of the casual plans you made over text. No need to add it to your calendar
  • We also saw an example of figuring out how long it would take to arrive somewhere, based on some plans made in a text message. Siri answers the question and brings up a map without you having to tab between multiple apps.

We're getting our first look at the new Siri.

safari new 2024

Siri, which was first introduced 13 years ago, is long overdue for an overhaul, and Apple is finally showing it off — powered with Apple Intelligence.

Apple says Siri is getting more natural, relevant, and personal. It's now more than a glowing circle, it'll be a glowing light bordering the screen instead. It'll be more conversational and understand context — no need to speak succinctly.

It can also have onscreen awareness. For example: Updating a friend's contact card with their address. Siri can act on your behalf in apps like finding a specific photo in your library or making changes in the Notes App.

You can also type to Siri for requests and switch between text and voice.

The new Siri can offer Apple support if you need help with a feature on your iPad, iPhone or Mac.

With App Intents, third-party developers will be able to define what they want to allow Siri and Apple Intelligence to access — basically, this will help Siri and Apple Intelligence plug into apps and carry out more tasks.

Apple says 'on-device' AI processing helps keep things more private.

safari new 2024

Apple Intelligence will take action when prompted like "pull these files" "play the podcast my wife sent me." So how does it do it?

Apple is really emphasizing that Apple Intelligence can run on-device, meaning it's not outsourced to cloud servers. It's more private that way, Apple says.

But there are some tasks that will require a more complex AI model than what's possible to run on the chips within your device, in which case Apple will use some cloud processing. To do this the Apple way, Apple announces "Private Cloud Compute," which can draw on larger server-based AI models while also protecting your privacy. The cloud servers use Apple Silicon.

When you ask Apple Intelligence to do a task, the software will determine if the request can be processed on-device or if it will work with Apple's "Private Cloud Compute" servers.

If so, it will send only relevant data. Apple says this system is a "brand new standard" in AI privacy.

Craig is back to detail the new AI features.

safari new 2024

We're seeing some examples of how Apple Intelligence will be woven into Apple's apps.

Some examples of where you'll see the new AI features:

  • It can understand and create language and images
  • Language: Apple Intelligence will make day-to-day tasks easier, such as in your Mail app when emailing.
  • Apple Intelligence has writing tools that can rewrite and summarize text across Mail, Notes, and more apps
  • Images: Create "totally original images." Apple says. Create custom animated images of  people in your Photos (three styles sketch illustration, and animations)

Tim Cook returns and announces 'Apple Intelligence,' its generative AI system.

safari new 2024

Apple has been using "artificial intelligence and machine learning for years," Cook says. Apple's AI has to be powerful, intuitive, integrated, personal, and private, he adds.

It should be "Personal intelligence" instead of "artificial intelligence," Cook says, before a video plays to reveal the branding for Apple's AI: "Apple Intelligence."

Some new games are coming to Mac.

safari new 2024

Apple talks about gaming updates for Mac.

Apple isn't traditionally known for gaming, so it's always looking to remind people that yes, you can play modern games on Macs.

For example, "Assassin's Creed: Mirage" and "Assassin's Creed: Shadows" are coming to Mac.

The Game Porting Toolkit 2 will allow developers to create more games that are compatible with Mac.

Apple announces new 'Passwords' app and Safari updates.

safari new 2024

The new Passwords app lets you store and easily access your various passwords. It'll be available on iOS, Mac, iPad, and Vision Pro.

Apple didn't say as much, but this will compete directly against other password-storage apps, like LastPass and 1Password.

For Apple's internet browser, Safari, new updates include:

  • Backgrounds are coming to FaceTime for when you want to hide your environment
  • Safari Highlights feature makes it easier to check out new music, shows, and find important info on websites without having to search for it

Say hello to macOS Sequoia.

safari new 2024

Sequoia is the name of Apple's new software for your MacBook and Mac. A big theme is "iPhone Mirroring," which Apple says lets you control your iPhone by "barely lifting a finger" with a virtual version of your iPhone displayed on your Mac screen.

You can use your mouse to swipe on apps and your keyboard to type in text on your iPhone. Your iPhone notifications will be sent to your Mac too.

While using "iPhone Mirroring," your real-life iPhone remains locked.

Craig is back to talk about new iPad software.

safari new 2024

A lot of what we're seeing here echoes what we see in iOS 18. There's a more customizable home screen and Control Center.

But there are some specific iPadOS changes.

  • Floating tab bar (that can morph into a sidebar) that will make it easier to navigate within apps.
  • Shareplay: Screen sharing will now let you tap and draw on your screen. You'll be able to control someone else's device over shareplay (with permission).
  • There's (finally) an iPad Calculator app that isn't just the scaled-up iPhone version.
  • With Math Notes within the Calculator app or the Notes app, you can use the Apple Pencil to write out math problems for the calculator to help you solve, and easily add together sums and solve more complex equations with variables. Writing the equal sign will trigger the Calculator to give a solution to a math problem.
  • Smart Script is meant to supercharge your handwritten notes: the feature will use on-device machine learning to recognize your handwriting and clean it up. You can copy/paste and spellcheck notes in your own handwriting.

Next up, Apple Watch's new software features!

safari new 2024

There's a big emphasis on fitness/health here with the latest version of Apple's Watch's software, watchOS 11.

In watchOS 11, there's a new Training Load calculation.

You can rate your workouts and adjust your effort rating. This will then be used to help calculate your Training Load. The goal is to give you more insights to make adjustments to your training.

You can also adjust your goals on the day to day to make it easier or more challenging to close your rings — or take a day off without losing your streak.

The Vitals app is also here to track your vitals and "gain better context when it comes to your health."

The Health app will help users stay on top of their pregnancy with a period tracker and more info about how your body changes with pregnancy.

The Smart Stack is getting smarter. Translate languages quickly and use the "Check In" feature to let friends know you're safe, such as when you're out on a late-night workout with only your watch.

WatchOS 11 will also use machine learning to curate the best photos for your watch face.

tvOS is also getting some new features.

safari new 2024

With InSight, you can see the actors and song names while watching content on Apple TV+ — Prime Video users may recognize this.

Smart subtitles on Apple TV will also be available when you rewind back.

AirPods are getting some new gesture controls.

safari new 2024

AirPods will be able to respond to nonverbal gestures like nodding or shaking your head, so if you're in an elevator or somewhere you'd rather not respond to Siri verbally, you can shake your head or nod to respond without talking.

Voice Isolation is coming to AirPods Pro, removing the background noise around you to deliver "the best call quality," Apple says.

We see a quick demo of a conversation where an AirPods Pro wearer has a quiet phone call even while at a construction site.

iOS 18 brings 'biggest redesign ever to the Photos app'

safari new 2024

Finally! In iOS 18, there's a new Photos app designed to have a more effective way to organize your photos.

  • You can now filter your library to help find specific types of photos
  • Scroll up in Photo Library to see collections like "Recent days"
  • The new version includes groups of people when you search the "People and Pets" folder
  • A new carousel to easily find favorites and featured photos by swiping

'Tap to Cash' and new features to Mail and Maps.

safari new 2024

There are new ways to organize the Mail email app with categories like "transactions" and "sales and promotions."

You can also get all your flight information in one place with categorization.

Hiking trails are alos coming to Maps with custom hike capabilities.

Apple also announces "Tap to Cash," allowing iPhone users to exchange money phone-to-phone by tapping, like the Airdrop feature.

Messages is getting 'Tapbacks' and scheduling.

safari new 2024

Say hello to Tapbacks, which let you quickly react to a text message with more emojis than the old default "love, like, laugh, thumbs" reactions.

"People love" tapbacks, Apple says.

Messages are also getting text formatting and the ability to schedule texts.

There are also some new effects: In iOS 18, you can add effects like "shake or "bloom" to specific words in a text.

Messages sent via satellite for when you're in a remote area without service for iPhone 14 and later.

You can now "hide" the apps you don't want others to know you've downloaded.

safari new 2024

If you hide an app, you can lock it behind FaceID or passcode and have it not show up on the iPhone home screen — it'll be accessible in a hidden apps folder that's locked instead.

Next, it's time to hear about iOS 18.

safari new 2024

Craig is back to announce iOS 18, calling it a "big release."

There's new iPhone home screen customization that offers "exciting new ways to personalize your iPhone further," Craig says.

There are new ways to arrange apps so you can see your home screen and wallpaper background better.

App icons in dark mode are also getting a new look.

By holding down on the home screen you can now tint your app icons thanks to a new customization menu. iOS 18 will suggest a tint color but you can also dial things to your preference.

Control Center is also getting an overhaul — it's more powerful to let you add more controls and scroll to find them and lay them out how you'd like. You can now swap your camera or flashlight controls on the lockscreen for new ones, like the Notes app.

First up: Software updates to Apple's Vision Pro.

safari new 2024

The software that powers Apple's $3500 Vision Pro, visionOS, is getting a follow-up.

VisionOS 2 has some "big updates," Apple says.

In the Photos app, you can now turn old photos into spatial photos thanks to machine learning.

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max owners will also be able to capture spatial videos for Vision Pro. And Canon will make a lens for the same use. There are also some new gesture controls for quickly accessing the menu. Amtrak riders, good news: Train support is coming to travel mode.

When connecting to your Mac, higher display resolution and overall size of the Mac display in the headset — think an ultrawide display wrapped around you — are on the way.

Tim Cook joins us from the top of the solar panel on Apple HQ.

safari new 2024

Cook welcomes everyone and talks about providing new tools for developers.

He mentions "profound new intelligence capabilities" that he hopes everyone will enjoy.

That sure sounds a lot like AI. But before we get there, Cook highlights Apple TV+ and some upcoming seasons, such as season 2 of "Severance," and a new movie "Wolfs," starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney. "We have so much to talk about today," Cook says. "We'll start with our OS announcements, and then we'll dive deeper into intelligence."

Here we go! The keynote is starting.

We're seeing a video playing with Apple exec Craig Federighi leading a team of employees skydiving into the event.

"It's showtime," he says, before dropping out of the plane.

You can watch the livestream right here too.

We're 10 minutes away from kickoff, and Apple will also be livestreaming the event if you want to tune in that way.

For those of you who can't listen or watch while at work, we'll also be liveblogging the entire event right here.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is here ... will he take the stage?

Sam Altman est bien présent sur place ! OpenAI devrait être au coeur d’iOS 18 :-) Le live sur Mac4Ever: https://t.co/YBP0c3mTbJ Bravo à notre cher @clementsauvage pour le selfie :) Poke @samax @OpenAI pic.twitter.com/x0UHl4S9d6 — Mac4Ever (@Mac4ever) June 10, 2024

The OpenAI CEO was photographed by X user @Mac4Ever . He was also spotted by another X user at a table with Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak.

Apple has reportedly made a deal with OpenAI to bring some of its AI features to iPhones.

Now, the big question is whether Altman will take the stage himself at WWDC to talk about it, or if he's just there to watch with the rest of us.

Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak is in the house!

Steve "Woz" Wozniak was just spotted rocking some sunglasses at Apple HQ by software developer Marco Eidinger.

Woz has attended a bunch of Apple events in the past, including WWDC. Back in 2013, he was photographed at WWDC on a segway.

Tim Cook teased this WWDC will be a 'big one.'

safari new 2024

The Apple CEO met with student developers who won its Swift Student Challenge over the weekend and said as much.

Referencing WWDC, Cook reportedly said "it's a big one."

With less than 2 hours to go until he's expected to take the stage and kick things off in full, consider us hyped up, Mr. Cook.

Tim Cook is up early and ready to roll

The CEO started the big day by sharing a photo of the sunrise with an optimistic message attached.

"Can't wait for you to join us at #WWDC24 this morning," Cook wrote on X.

'Pent-up demand'

safari new 2024

No matter what Apple does actually announce at WWDC, it will be up to consumers to decide whether AI-based services are something they really want or need on their iPhones.

There's also a risk of annoying some iPhone owners who won't be able to use the new features because their devices aren't powerful enough.

However, getting people to buy a new iPhone is of course part of Apple's game plan. Wedbush analysts think " pent-up demand around an upgrade cycle could exceed 270 million iPhones heading into iPhone 16."

Words and pictures

safari new 2024

One rumor we're really hoping is on the money is automatic transcription for voice notes courtesy of AI. That's a feature available on the Google Pixel phone and other apps for some time now.

Apple is also going to let users create emojis on the fly using AI, according to Bloomberg.

'Which battles to fight'

safari new 2024

Apple's partnerships, like the rumored deal with OpenAI, are a way to pass on some of the costs and risks related to AI models, according to David Wagner of Apple shareholder Aptus Capital Advisors.

"Apple is passing off the liabilities of AI to a partner like OpenAI," he told The Wall Street Journal. "Apple knows which battles to fight and which ones not to fight. This isn't one they're fighting."

‘Apple Intelligence’

safari new 2024

The new AI operating system that will power iPhones, iPads and Macs is expected to be called "Apple Intelligence," Bloomberg reported .

The new features will also be optional for users, per the outlet.

'Out of the ditch'

safari new 2024

Apple is hoping to stimulate iPhone sales by adding AI features to its key product.

Trip Miller, managing partner at Apple investor Gullane Capital Partners, told The Wall Street Journal : " AI is the thing that can get Apple out of the ditch. They're this big behemoth. It takes a new story to get them moving in a new direction. AI is that opportunity for them."

Tim Cook’s keynote

safari new 2024

Tim Cook's keynote address at WWDC starts at 1 p.m. ET and will be between 90 minutes and two hours long. You can also watch it on the Apple TV app.

Apple shares are a touch higher in premarket trading and have added 6% this year.

However, that's a less impressive performance than Microsoft, which is up more than 14% and overtook Apple as the most valuable company back in January.

AI summarization tools on the cards

safari new 2024

Matthew Bloxham, a Bloomberg Intelligence analyst, is expecting AI summarization tools to be announced by Tim Cook.

He told Bloomberg TV: "Safari, which is their web browser, will do more intelligent summarization of things you've searched for. There might even be a AI-prompted reply for emails and messages, so lots of different features in all of their familiar apps just kind of enhancing them and elevating it to the next level."

Vision Pro headset was last year’s WWDC reveal

safari new 2024

CEO Tim Cook unveiled Apple's first mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, at last year's WWDC . It was the first major product announcement since the Apple Watch in 2014.

'AI-driven accelerated growth cycle'

safari new 2024

Wedbush Securities analysts including Dan Ives said in a note that the AI-infused products and services "will be the narrative of the Apple story for the coming years."

They predict a formal announcement of Apple's rumored partnership with OpenAI, which they think is a chatbot based on Apple LLMs and that an AI App Store will be unveiled.

They also think an AI-powered iPhone 16 launch could be on the cards this year too.

WWDC is Apple’s biggest conference

safari new 2024

The Worldwide Developers Conference is held by Apple every year. It starts with a keynote speech from CEO Tim Cook that's available to watch on apple.com .

WWDC is being held at Apple Park , its headquarters in Cupertino, California. It's colloquially called "the ring" or "the spaceship" because its giant circular design resembles a flying saucer.

Developers will attend various sessions at the conference, which runs until Friday.

Apple announces powerful new privacy and security features

The Apple privacy logo is shown against a black screen.

Privacy Features Give Users Greater Control of Their Data

A screen shows a locked browsing window in Safari and requests Touch ID or a password to view the tabs.

Features Designed to Help Protect User Safety

A Sensitive Content Warning is shown in Messages on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Powerful Security Protections to Safeguard User Data

A screen under Passwords in System Settings shows shared passwords between family members.

Additional Features Designed with Privacy and Security at Their Core

  • Check In makes it easy for users to let friends or family members know they’ve reached their destination safely. Once turned on by the user, Check In automatically detects when the user has reached their intended destination, and will let selected contacts know via Messages. In the case that something unexpected happens while the user is on their way, Check In will recognize that the user is not making progress toward their declared destination and check in with them. If they don’t respond, the feature will share useful information — like the user’s precise location, battery level, cell service status, and the last active time using their iPhone — with the contacts the user selected. In addition to making it easier to get help if needed, Check In is designed around privacy and security, keeping the user in control by letting them choose whom to share their information with, including the destination and time duration that they set. Users can end the Check In session at any time. Information sent with Check In is end-to-end encrypted so only the user’s family member or friend can read it, not Apple or anyone else.
  • With NameDrop , a new AirDrop experience, a user can hold their iPhone near another to share their contact information with only their intended recipients. Users can also choose the specific contact details they want to share — and, importantly, what information they don’t want to share. Users can also share content like photos or links the same way. Apple Watch users can also use NameDrop by tapping the Share button in My Card in the Contacts app, or by tapping the My Card watch face complication, and then bringing Apple Watch face to face with someone else’s Apple Watch. As with all AirDrop experiences, these new features securely share content over an encrypted connection.
  • Live Voicemail makes it easier to know when to answer a phone call. When someone calls and starts to leave a message, users will see a live transcription as the caller speaks. If the user wants to talk to the caller, they can pick up the call at any time. When Silence Unknown Callers is turned on, calls from unknown numbers will go directly to Live Voicemail without ringing. Calls identified as spam by carriers won’t appear as Live Voicemail, and will instead be instantly declined. This gives the user more peace of mind that spam, scams, or calls that may be invasive of privacy, can be ignored without missing important calls. Thanks to the power of the Neural Engine, Live Voicemail occurs entirely on device, and this information is not shared with Apple.

PRESS RELEASE

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today announced its latest privacy and security innovations, including major updates to Safari Private Browsing, Communication Safety, and Lockdown Mode, as well as app privacy improvements. Additionally, Apple introduced new features designed with privacy and security at their core, including Check In, NameDrop, and Live Voicemail. These new efforts are the latest manifestation of Apple’s deeply held belief that privacy is a fundamental human right and that good privacy is built on a foundation of strong security.

“Privacy is designed into every new Apple product and feature from the beginning,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “We are focused on keeping our users in the driver’s seat when it comes to their data by continuing to provide industry-leading privacy features and the best data security in the world. This approach is evident in a number of features on our platforms, like the major updates to Safari Private Browsing, as well as the expansion of Lockdown Mode.”

Major Updates to Safari Private Browsing Safari introduced private browsing years before any other browser. This year, a significant update provides even greater protection against trackers as users browse the web and from people who might have access to their device. Advanced tracking and fingerprinting protections go even further to help prevent websites from using the latest techniques to track or identify a user’s device. Private Browsing now locks when not in use, allowing a user to keep tabs open even when stepping away from the device.

Photos Privacy Permission Improvements A new embedded Photos picker can help users share specific photos with apps while keeping the rest of their library private. When apps ask to access the user’s entire photo library, the user will be shown more information about what they’ll be sharing, along with occasional reminders of their choice.

Link Tracking Protection in Messages, Mail, and Safari Private Browsing Some websites add extra information to their URLs in order to track users across other websites. Now this information will be removed from the links users share in Messages and Mail, and the links will still work as expected. This information will also be removed from links in Safari Private Browsing.

App Privacy Improvements New tools give developers more information about the data practices of third-party software development kits (SDKs) they use in their apps, allowing them to provide even more accurate Privacy Nutrition Labels. These changes also improve the integrity of the software supply chain by supporting signatures for third-party SDKs to add another layer of protection against abuse.

Communication Safety Communication Safety, designed to warn children when receiving or sending photos in Messages that contain nudity, now covers video content in addition to still images. A new API lets developers integrate Communication Safety right into their apps. Additionally, the feature will now help keep kids safe when they’re sending and receiving an AirDrop, a FaceTime video message, and when using the Phone app to receive a Contact Poster and the Photos picker to choose content to send. All image and video processing for Communication Safety occurs on device, meaning neither Apple nor any third party gets access to the content. These warnings will be turned on for the child accounts in their Family Sharing plan, and can be disabled by the parent.

Sensitive Content Warning Sensitive Content Warning helps adult users avoid seeing unwanted nude images and videos when receiving them in Messages, an AirDrop, a FaceTime video message, and the Phone app when receiving a Contact Poster, all using the same privacy-preserving technology at the core of Communication Safety. The feature is optional and can be turned on by the user in Privacy & Security settings. As with Communication Safety, all image and video processing for Sensitive Content Warning occurs on device, meaning neither Apple nor any third party gets access to the content.

Passwords and Passkeys Updates For easier and more secure password and passkey sharing, users can create a group to share a set of passwords, and everyone in the group can add and edit passwords to keep them up to date. Since sharing is through iCloud Keychain, it is end-to-end encrypted. Additionally, one-time verification codes received in Mail will now automatically autofill in Safari, making it easy to securely log in without leaving the browser.

Lockdown Mode Lockdown Mode expands to provide even more protections for those who may be targeted by mercenary spyware because of who they are or what they do. New protections encompass safer wireless connectivity defaults, media handling, media sharing defaults, sandboxing, and network security optimizations. Turning on Lockdown Mode further hardens device defenses and strictly limits certain functionalities, sharply reducing the attack surface for those who need additional protections. Additionally, Lockdown Mode will be supported on watchOS.

These features will be coming in free software updates this fall.

Here's every MacOS 15 Sequoia feature announced at WWDC 2024

kyle-closeup-headshot-edited2

Apple previewed MacOS 15 Sequoia today at WWDC , showing off an overhaul of the operating system for MacBooks and iMacs that centers around AI integration. This year's WWDC was undoubtedly all about AI. It's unsurprising since Apple took its time to discuss its plans for AI integration across its products. Now that it's here, we have a better picture of its approach, which looks good.

Also:  Live updates: Everything Apple announced at WWDC 2024, including iOS 18, Siri, AI, and more

New AI features are coming to Siri, Safari, and a new Continuity app that streamlines the use of your iPhone and Mac. But it's not all AI. There are also quite a bit of quality-of-life design improvements and security updates launching with MacOS 15.

Following today's preview, beta testing of MacOS 15 starts immediately and will continue over the next few months, with a launch to the general public in the fall of 2024. That'll be here sooner than you think, so let's take a look at the biggest features just announced.

1. Apple Intelligence

The past few months have been jam-packed with flashy announcements from OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, but Apple's had the final word, reclaiming the acronym with the clever naming of its new Apple Intelligence . So what is it? It refers to the overarching AI ecosystem that will be present in MacOS 15, as well as the iPhone and iPad; the engine powering all the new AI functionality across all its apps.

The Apple Intelligence ecosystem is fueled by a partnership with OpenAI , allowing Apple to leverage the massive LLM already cultivated by OpenAI's huge success with ChatGPT, along with the company's goals of taking on Google by entering the search market.

Also: What is 'Apple Intelligence': How it works with on-device and cloud-based AI

Apple's approach to AI is markedly different from that of its competitors, however. Instead of positioning the new AI features as integral aspects of their products, Apple allows users to opt in, making immediate adoption a choice. The AI features are also clearly defined as being in beta, underscoring their nature as works-in-progress.

This lets Apple disengage from the chaotic rat race to a degree, positioning itself as the careful, more ethical actor when it comes to AI, particularly in light of  recent debilitating security concerns  from Microsoft's Recall feature, which is delaying the release of a host of its new Copilot+ PCs .

2. Continuity

The new Continuity app links your Mac to your iPhone in a fully comprehensive way, essentially allowing you to remote into your iPhone directly through your laptop. The demo at WWDC showed iPhone mirroring to pull up the iPhone's home screen, interacting with multiple apps using the laptop's trackpad and keyboard.

Also: iOS 18's new Game Mode makes your iPhone faster and more performant

The app also streamlines your devices by bringing your iPhone's notifications straight to the Mac, allowing you to pull up the corresponding app onto the laptop. If you're worried about privacy while using your phone on your laptop, your phone's screen actually remains locked and turned off, even while you're using the phone remotely. Alternatively, the new standby mode on the iPhone displays a host of at-a-glance (but un-interactable) data like a clock and calendar while you're using the Continuity app on the Mac.

3. Siri 2.0

Apple has played the long game when it comes to its virtual assistant, Siri. As one of the very first to be adopted by the public, Siri has been around for a very long time -- since 2011 -- although it's taken a back seat to flashier AI assistants the past few years. Apple's technology in this area offers a strong foundation to expand upon, however, and the new and improved Siri is full of new AI features.

Also:  The best Apple deals of June 2024: iPhones, Apple Watches, iPads, and more

During the WWDC keynote, Apple showed off Siri's new look as an ever-present AI assistant integrated into every thread of the UI, not a standalone app. Siri will have access to ChatGPT's LLM, allowing the AI to be functionally ready to communicate in a more natural context, following up with previous conversations and messages instead of providing full context in every single prompt.

The new Siri also comes with on-screen awareness, allowing the AI to respond to what you're looking at on the screen without requiring the user to provide specific context with each prompt. This also allows Siri to take in-app actions in a way that wasn't possible before. In MacOS Sequoia, Siri's integration with OpenAI's LLM propels the virtual assistant to the top players in the field alongside Chat GPT-4o and Google's Gemini .

4. AI-fueled productivity apps

Apple Intelligence has been integrated across all of the big productivity apps in MacOS 15. Here's a breakdown of some of the most noteworthy features.

  • Keynote, Numbers, and Pages: The core suite of Apple's productivity apps are seeing a host of AI-infused upgrades on both the creativity end and performance. Keynote will allow users to tap AI to auto-generate slides, and Pages will come with new text-generation prompts fueled by AI.
  • Mail:  Apple Intelligence will play a more active role in finding specific emails, responding, deleting, and organizing your inbox, from summarizing emails to suggesting replies and rewrites. One of the more useful features includes the summary feature, which taps the AI to pull out summaries of an email in the inbox view, as opposed to just showing the first few lines of an email, which often aren't useful for summarizing what an email is about.
  • Calendar: Besides integration with the Reminders app, the new Calendar app will support AI.
  • Photos: AI-based photo editing features in the Photos app allow users to make touch-ups, remove backgrounds, and do editing instantaneously. Additionally, searching for specific photos and videos using natural language will bring up images of specific people or events.
  • Notes: Voice functionality is coming to the Notes app, with the ability to add voice memos directly embedded into your notes. AI will also support audio transcription and transcripts of audio recordings. You can record and transcribe audio, and when your recording is finished, the AI will create a summary on its own.

5. New and improved Safari

Safari will see a host of improvements powered by AI functionality, including an "Intelligent Search" option that harnesses on-device AI to summarize search results in the browser in Mac OS Sequoia. Following along with Apple's emphasis on security, Safari updates include intelligent tracking prevention that restricts what websites can track, while also emphasizing the efficiency and speed of the Safari app.

Also:  ChatGPT privacy tips: Two important ways to limit the data you share with OpenAI

Apple demoed Safari's machine learning capability to automatically detect relevant information on a webpage, including things like quick links, directions, and quick summaries with logistical information like phone numbers and addresses.

6. Standalone Passwords app

Aligning with Apple's positioning of its AI features as secure and trustworthy, it's releasing an all-new and updated Passwords app in MacOS 15 that consolidates and streamlines your password across your Apple devices.

Also: Apple's new AI features expected for just these iPhone models (for now)

This standalone app is an extension of the existing iCloud Keychain, and seeks to simplify password storage by employing Face ID and Touch ID alongside character-string passwords. Much of it is designed to work automatically and seamlessly in an effort to solve what is a huge UX headache that everyone has experienced at one point or another.

Apple wants to create a "unified gaming platform" across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with high resolution and improved ray tracing. Apple emphasized the sheer number of new titles available on the Apple silicon chips, and they look better than ever. Frostpunk 2, Control, and UbiSoft include ray tracing and Assasin's Creed, coming to Apple devices later this year.

Notes on a Last-Minute Safari

By David Sedaris

Hand holding a serving plate with a yellow zebra on it.

Listen to this article.

It was a good year for Christmas parties. At one, I met a number of authors I had always admired. This can be tricky, but they were all lovely. The food was lovely, too, though I dropped a miniature barbecue sandwich on the new white shirt I was wearing, and will likely never get the grease stain out.

At another party, the following week, I was introduced to a curator from the Metropolitan Museum. We talked about people who throw soup and oil on beloved paintings, hoping to draw attention to climate change or poor nutrition or whatever their cause is, and then I learned that he would soon be leaving on an African safari, the sort where you carry a camera rather than a gun.

“Have you been planning it for months?” I asked.

“Actually, it all came together over the past few weeks,” he told me.

On the subway home, I said to Hugh in the faux-pouty voice that I use to challenge extreme injustice—other couples taking a vacation when it should be us, for example—“Why can’t we go on a safari?”

A month later, we were in an open-sided four-by-four vehicle surrounded by seven lions, none of which seemed to care about us. All of them were female, and I wondered if, when writing about this afterward—for surely I would—I might be taken to task for using the term “lionesses.”

“Is it like referring to someone as a ‘waitress’ or a ‘stewardess’?” I whispered to Hugh, who was seated beside me, sketching. “Will people say, ‘Why did you have to mention their gender in the first place? Why can’t you just say “lions” and leave it at that?’ ”

To my mind, the gender mattered, since the females do the majority of the hunting, and are therefore scarier when they’re eight feet away and can surely smell you.

I looked the subject up later, when we got back to camp, and learned that there’s some debate about whether or not to refer to lionesses as “she-lions.” Of course, none of that debate is coming from the big-cat family. What surprised me about these animals was their playfulness, the way one would sidle up to another and gently swat her, or roll over on her back with her paws in the air. We’d been stationary for ten minutes or so when one of the seven walked in front of our four-by-four, hunched over, and defecated. I thought that, like a cat in a flower bed, she’d then cover it up, but no. The moment she rejoined the others, a jackal darted out of the tall grass, snatched the turd in his mouth, and was about to make off with it when a hyena intervened, and a struggle ensued.

“Over a turd ?” Hugh whispered.

We might have stayed there for hours, happily observing, but then another four-by-four pulled up. Its passengers went nuts: “Seven lionesses!” Hugh and I looked at the new arrivals with an expression that read, Um, they’re sort of ours. As if we personally had gathered them there. Then another four-by-four pulled up, and another after that.

I don’t know how many vehicles were roaming the Maasai Mara that afternoon. It’s a five-hundred-and-eighty-three-square-mile nature reserve, so had there been a thousand other four-by-fours we likely wouldn’t have seen more than a handful of them. June to October is the busiest season in Kenya, safari-wise, and this was early February. It was hot but not humid, and there were three of us in the vehicle: me, Hugh, and our twenty-six-year-old guide, Dalton, a Maasai tribesman who had on a moss-green shirt with the name of the place where we were staying embroidered on its right breast pocket. His pants were khaki and knee-length, worn with ankle-high suède boots.

Dalton’s hair was cut short. His head was almost perfectly round, and he was missing several of his bottom teeth. “What is it you would like to see?” he’d asked upon collecting us that first bright morning at the airstrip.

“A panda,” I told him.

On the ninety-minute drive to our camp, we saw every animal that was in “ The Lion King ” and then some. They were just there , like ants at a picnic, except that they were elephants and giraffes. We saw zebras and leopards and wildebeests and warthogs, all grazing or resting or fleeing on this grass-covered, seemingly limitless plain.

“Have you seen a kill?” people in the other four-by-fours—couples with camera lenses the size of the Hubble telescope—would ask. It didn’t take long to realize that seven lionesses weren’t enough. They had to have blood dripping from their jaws.

“On our first day, we saw a lion eating a wildebeest,” I’d tell them.

That was like saying you’d seen one eating a sandwich. The prize was to watch one pounce on her prey, and rip its throat out. “Just last month, a little after midnight, two lions took down a zebra right there next to your tent,” the woman who checked us into our camp told us, pointing over the railing to a shaded ravine. The camp was built on the banks of the Talek River, which was swollen from recent rains but still flowed lazily. There was no fence around the property. Wild animals came and went at their leisure, though during the day all we saw were crocodiles and mongooses. It was after dark that the action took place, so at night we had to be escorted from our tent to the common area by Maasai tribesmen carrying spears. The most dangerous animal—what Dalton called “the most killingest”—was the hippo. I had learned this years earlier from a nature documentary and was surprised, as they always look so happy to me, almost like they’re smiling.

We saw countless hippos in Kenya. “All they want is to get into our swimming pool,” the property manager, a man named Steven, told us. “And if that happens we will never get them out.”

He was giving us a tour, and was leading us from the hydroponic vegetable garden—the “ shamba of goodness,” it was called—to the recreation area. I looked at the man whose job it was to guard the pool we were passing. “What do hippos smell like?” I asked.

Steven thought for a moment. “Cows.”

There were nine tents in all. “Are there many other guests at the moment?” I’d asked the woman who checked us in.

“We have no guests here,” she told me, smiling so broadly I could see her gums. “Only family.”

Oh, no, I thought, for doesn’t a person go on safari to escape that kind of talk? Ditto “ shamba of goodness.”

If I know I have to get up early, I generally have a devil of a time falling asleep. The place where Hugh and I slept was a tent in the same way that a Shake Shack is an actual shack. The pitched ceiling was, at its highest point, twelve feet, and, not including our deck, which overlooked the river, we had a good nine hundred square feet of floor space—with a real floor. There was electricity and Wi-Fi. Potable water. A tub, a shower, and a toilet. Complimentary laundry service. Outstanding food. Our outings took place early in the morning and late in the afternoon, so I’d go to bed and, knowing that we needed to meet Dalton at 6 A.M. , lie awake while Hugh snored beside me. The book I’d brought along for the trip was “ The Andy Warhol Diaries ,” which didn’t at all fit the location. Nor did it make sense to watch, say, past seasons of “Project Runway.” We were in Kenya, after all, and could hear all sorts of creatures on the other side of our canvas walls, roaring and moaning and carrying on.

On the first night, I reached for my iPad and watched a documentary on baboons. It wasn’t the kind of program that gives the animals names and talks about them in a whisper (“. . . but Denice wasn’t about to give up that easily”). Still, it was less interesting than I wanted it to be. The best part was when the heir to the colony, a four-month-old male, was killed by an intruder and his mother carried his carcass around until it was just a rag of fur.

The following afternoon, we came upon a troop of baboons resting beside the river. There were at least thirty of them, many with babies on their backs. “Get out your camera,” Dalton said as he turned off the four-by-four’s engine. I’d told him from the get-go that photography was not my thing.

“I will not be taking a single picture,” I’d promised.

“Not even if we come upon a rhino?” he asked.

“Not even if we see one fighting a mother grizzly,” I told him.

Dalton kept thinking I’d buckle, but I never did, at least not in Kenya. Later, in Tanzania, I would pull out my phone, but not for an animal. Rather, it was for a sign painted on the wall of a gas station. “No Smorking,” it read.

Evan, one of the guards at our camp, also noticed that I wasn’t taking any photos. He was slight and handsome and was wearing a traditional Maasai outfit that consisted of two rectangles of plaid fabric, each a different color. On his feet were sandals made of old tires. He looked outstanding, as if he’d been dressed by Comme des Garçons. When I complimented him on his clothing, he removed the upper piece of fabric, which was worn almost like a shawl. “Here, try it on,” he said.

I wanted to explain that in America this would be called cultural appropriation.

“What’s that?” I could imagine him asking.

To be honest, I’ve never understood it myself. “I think it’s when you make a taco with, like, blue cheese on it” was the best I would have been able to come up with.

“Everyone else is photographing all the time,” Evan said, taking back the piece of fabric and sounding, if not hurt, then at least a little underappreciated. “So why not you?”

“I jot things down instead,” I told him, pulling my notebook from my pocket and showing it to him. “For instance, earlier today I wrote . . .” I looked at a page and groaned. It was as if a person with only two fingers—one on each hand—had written it. While in a bumper car.

I never saw a paved road in the Maasai Mara. A few were wide enough for two vehicles, but were still as rocky and hard to navigate as the barely discernible, often flooded paths we frequently found ourselves on. My big fear before going on safari was that I wouldn’t be able to exercise. We weren’t allowed to venture on foot beyond the confines of our camp, so I worried that in order to meet my daily Apple Watch minimum of ten thousand steps —roughly four and a half miles—I’d have to walk back and forth across our deck for hours on end. I had two and a half miles under my belt the morning that Dalton met us at the airstrip, and, by the time we reached our camp, I’d miraculously logged twice that many. It seemed my watch mistook the bumpiness of the road, and the jostling it gave rise to, for walking. This was great for my step count but awful for writing.

It was only when we stopped that I could record anything legible. That said, my notes weren’t always as illuminating as I’d expected them to be. “What does ‘Alt’ mean?” I asked Hugh over dinner one night.

He looked down at the page. “It’s not ‘Alt,’ ” he said. “It’s ‘A.L.T.’ ”

Then I remembered. We’d been out early that morning, observing a short parade of ostriches. It was misty, and I pointed to a vague shape on the horizon. “What’s that?” I asked Dalton.

He followed my finger and told me it was likely an A.L.T. “Animal-looking thing,” he explained.

Another of my notes simply read “Wow!,” but I knew right off what it referred to—the highlight of our trip. We had driven up alongside a herd of eight elephants, three of them babies. Their size was impressive, but that I was prepared for. What surprised me, and was so magnificent, was the sound of the tall grass they were eating being torn from the ground with their trunks. Dalton had turned the engine off, so that was all we could hear. “Close your eyes,” I said to Hugh as I closed my own as well. If I were to manufacture a perfume, it would smell the way that grass being ripped from the ground by elephants sounds—simultaneously soothing and astonishing—and simply everyone would have to have it. The problem is that it wouldn’t go with any of the perfume names I’ve come up with over the years, the best being Obsequious.

The eight elephants were on our last day in Kenya. The following morning, we flew to Tanzania, not for more safari but to stay in a resort on the island of Zanzibar. The only animals I saw during our time there were lizards—some nearly a foot long—and snails the size of Hugh’s fist. The beach was pretty—sand as white as sugar, palm trees. The property was guarded by men with clubs tucked into their belts, and the moment you left it, walking, say, the twenty feet from your lounge chair to the water’s edge, you were set upon by people trying to sell you things: a hard-boiled egg from a bucket, a seashell, cashews, a ride on a boat, a painting of a leopard, a T-shirt with “ Hakuna Matata ” printed on it. “My friend!” someone would call, extending a closed fist and wanting you to tap it with one of your own, even while you were in the sea.

This is why I have never been to Bali or Mauritius or any of those other places people go to get some sun in the winter. The water in Zanzibar was warm and such an arresting shade of turquoise that it seemed to have been dyed. But the income gap between the people who stayed at the resort and the people who actually lived on the island was so wide you couldn’t really see anything else. Plus, the hotel staff said “Hakuna matata,” which means “No worries” in Swahili, incessantly.

“Could I maybe have more coffee?”

“Hakuna matata.”

“I’m not feeling terribly well.”

“God, that’s a big snail.”

It got to the point where you didn’t dare say anything just because you didn’t want to hear “Hakuna matata” again.

There were no price tags on anything. If you were to ask how much a sack of peppercorns was and the answer started with “For you, I am going to offer a special deal,” you knew you’d be overpaying. Everyone we came across was seemingly on the make, and who could blame them, really?

“How much for a ride to Stone Town and back?” Hugh and I asked a taxi-driver one swampy afternoon. He quoted us a price, but when we got there he claimed, “I didn’t say a hundred and fifty thousand shillings”—the equivalent of nearly sixty dollars—“I said two hundred thousand,” which simply wasn’t true. In the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t an enormous amount—a difference of twenty dollars, which I was going to give him anyway as a tip—but when you capped it off with “Hakuna matata” I felt like crying.

We could have ended our vacation in Kenya. It was me who wanted to add Tanzania, and mainly so that I could put it on my list of countries I have travelled to. The only thing I knew before arriving was that it’s not safe to be an albino there. Many people consider them to be evil, yet place great value on their organs and other body parts: their hands and hearts, entire legs. It’s easier to harvest them from children, so kids are at higher risk of being abducted and dismembered. Their parts are sold to witch doctors, who use them to create amulets and potions one might employ while searching for precious metals, say, or to improve one’s luck in regard to fishing. It sounds absolutely insane. How could anyone possibly be so gullible? you wonder. Then you think of all the Americans—some may be your neighbors, your co-workers, your wife or your uncle—who genuinely believe that J.F.K., Jr., did not die in a plane crash, but is alive and well and working in cahoots with Donald Trump to stop the Clintons from drinking the blood of babies. And you’re, like, The leg of a butchered child might help me find gold? O.K. I guess I’ve heard crazier things.

The world can be a savage place, but that’s not the lesson you want to carry home with you. Yes, we humans are cruel and often dangerous, but there’s still nature, and before it’s too late we need to appreciate it. Of course, not everyone can hang out with elephants, but look at that bird perched on your feeder, and at that squirrel chasing the bird away from said feeder. Look at the rats scuttering before you on a New York street, at the spider that somehow got trapped in your elevator. We’re all on a safari of one kind or another—it’s just that some of us aren’t returning with two brilliant rectangles of Maasai plaid fabric and a bacterial infection. ♦

Apple announced new features coming to iPhones via iOS 18 and the company's AI-powered intelligence system called "Apple Intelligence" at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday, including scheduled iMessages, interface customizability and one-of-a-kind emojis.

With iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence coming later this year, according to Apple executive Craig Federighi, iPhone users will have access to a smarter, more customizable and more powerful mobile operating system.

"We are just getting started, I hope you are as excited as I am about the road ahead," Federighi said during Apple's keynote at WWDC.

Here are some of the new features coming via iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence.

When is iOS 18 releasing? Which phones can use iOS 18?

Apple announced iOS 18 will debut this fall as a free download for iPhone Xs and later.

Enhanced home screen, control center customizability

When iPhone users unlock their devices, they are typically met by a wallpaper and a ton of apps. With iOS 18, users will be able to further customize their home screen in various ways, including by:

  • Putting app icons and widgets anywhere on the home screen grid.
  • Turning the iPhone on dark mode, which now changes app icons.
  • Changing the tint color of the home screen.

The control center is also more customizable as iPhone users will be able to group their favorite controls, including ones created by third-party apps. The flashlight and camera shortcuts on the lock screen will also be changeable.

Scheduled messages and more "tapback" reactions coming with iOS 18

The Messages app will have a lot of new features coming thanks to iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence, Apple leaders announced Monday.

Scheduled messages, emoji tapbacks and text effects were announced as improvements to the Message app. The text effects will allow users to visually amplify their messages, while emoji tapbacks are ways to respond to text messages more expressively.

Rich Communication Services (RCS) is another new edition to Messages coming via iOS 18 and the improvement will allow for smoother text messaging between iPhone and Android users.

Welcome, 'Genmojis'

With the help of Apple Intelligence, users will be able to create custom "Genmoji" to match any moment. All users will have to do is provide a description and a Genmoji will appear, along with other options to choose from. Genmojis can also be added inline in messages.

Another feature available in Messages courtesy of Apple Intelligence is users' ability to create "total original images" of people in sketch and animated forms. Apple used a contact's birthday as an example, and a custom sketch was created and sent via the Messages app.

'Biggest redesign ever' to Photos

Photos is receiving its "biggest redesign ever" as the app will now be "unified to a single view."

Filter options are coming to the app and users will able to search through photos by the month or year they were taken. Screenshots can also be filtered out.

A collections feature is now included and will allow users to browse through customizable sections. A carousel that updates daily is another feature that allows users to see their favorite photos in a new format.

Improved, more organized Mail app

The Mail app will be able to separate emails into sections to make users' inboxes more organized.

Incoming email is separated into:

  • Primary for personal and time-sensitive emails
  • Transactions for confirmations and receipts
  • Updates for news and social notifications
  • Promotions for marketing emails and coupons

A new mail digest feature will also make skimming important emails easier.

Highlights and redesigned reader added to Safari

Safari will be able to make it easier to get the gist of articles or webpages quickly by finding key information and summarizing.

For example, Safari will summarize a long article for users or find the location of a restaurant just by its name appearing on a webpage.

Passwords app, improved privacy

The Passwords app will make it easier for users to store and access their passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. The app will also tell users if their passwords are weak or have been used multiple times.

The iOS 18 update will also help users' privacy by allowing them to hide apps and lock apps to where it would require a passcode or Face ID to open them.

Advanced Siri

Due to Apple Intelligence, Siri will be more advanced than ever by being able to:

  • Take actions inside apps on users' behalf.
  • Answer thousands of questions when users want to know how to do something on their Apple devices.
  • Maintain conversational context so users don't have to repeat certain things when scheduling events or sending messages.
  • Better understand demands, if even users stumble over words.
  • Take action when something new appears on the screen, such as updating a contact when a user receives text message containing a new address.
