Know Before You Go

Masks or cloth face coverings are optional for visitors to the Minneapolis Convention Center. On Feb. 24, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey ended the city's mask requirement , which had been in place since Jan. 5. Individual events at the MCC may still institute individual mask and/or vaccine/testing requirements. For more information on MCC health & safety protocols, please go here .

Meet the Performers

Pawandeep Rajan​

Pawandeep Rajan is a famous Indian Playback singer from Champawat, Uttarakhand, India. He is the winner of The Voice India singing reality show 2015. In 2020, Pawandeep participated in the Sony Entertainment TV show ‘Indian Idol’ 2020-21 Season 12 and he is the winner. Now he is listed among the top 3 contestants.

Sayli Kamble

Sayli Kamble has participated in many music reality shows, making her debut in Star Plus child singing reality TV shows from Amul Voice of India – Mummy Ke Superstar. Sayli has done another show Gaurav Maharashtracha and also appeared in Star Plus and Etv Marathi singing shows. She participated in Indian Idol 12, where she was the second runner up.

Arunita Kanjilal

Arunita Kanjilal is an Indian semi-classical singer from Bangaon, West Bengal. She sings songs in Bengali and Hindi languages. In 2013, at the age of ten she won the Bengali singing reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Bangla. She participated in Indian Idol 12, where she was the first runner up.

Mohammad Danish

Danish hails from the Kirana Gharana in Uttar Pradesh. He was born to Dr Shahnawaz Ali & Musarrat Jahan in Kirana Gharana, Muzaffarnagar, UP, India. He completed his graduation in music from Indra Kala Sangeet Vishv Vidyalaya, Chhattisgarh. Being from a family of musicians, he himself professed in the art of music.

Enjoy watching amateur performers looking to make their big break with Indian Idol tickets. The show Indian Idol is an Indian version of Pop Idol and airs on the Hindi language channel Sony Entertainment Television. The show has spawned spin-offs such as Indian Idol Jr. The primary judges of the show are Anu Malik, Farah Khan and Sonu Nigam. 

The first season of the show was in 2004-2005, which had 12 contestants. The hosts of the show were Aman Verma and Mini Mathur, actress and model. The winner that season was Abhijeet Sawant with Amit Sana coming in as runner-up. In the 2005-2006 seasons, Verma and Mathur returned to host. Sandeep Acharya came in first with N.C. Karunya finished as runner-up. In 2007, Aman was replaced with new cohost Hussain Kuwajerwala and the field was expanded to 13 singers

Hear talented performers with Indian Idol tickets. In 2008, the field was narrowed down to 12 and Mini Mathur left the show and her role was taken up by Meiyang Chang, who had been a contestant in the 2006 season. In 2010, Kuwajerwala was joined by Abhijeet Sawant, the inaugural champion of the competition. In 2012, Mini Mathur returned to host the show. That year’s competition had 16 competitors that. Only in 2019, did the show expand to have 17 competitors, featuring one of the largest fields in its history.

For the first time ever, IU aka Lee Ji-eun is headed to North America.

From July 15 through Aug. 2, the K-Pop star will wrap up her sprawling, multi-continent ‘H.E.R. World Tour’ with six concerts in the U.S.

While stateside, she’s slated to headline at arenas in New Jersey, Georgia, Washington, D.C., Illinois and California.

That’s not all, though.

Ahead of the tour, the 30-year-old singer has announced she will release the single “Love Wins” on Wednesday, Jan. 24; the upcoming accompanying music video will reportedly feature BTS’ V.

Uganda’s Dhoni, Frank Nsubuga, stars in a special T20 World Cup win at age of 43

F our overs, two maidens, four runs conceded, and two wickets. Franco Nsubuga was only playing his second World Cup game when he eked out the most economical bowling figures in T20 World Cup history. This, to inspire a historic first win for Uganda on Thursday. But at the age of 43, the road to a World Cup debut for the second oldest player in the tournament’s history has taken much longer.

Nsubuga may have been new to the World Cups but he’s been a constant name in Ugandan cricket over the past four decades. He made his professional debut in 1996. Or rather, here’s a more revelatory picture of the sport from back then: when Nsubuga went on his first tour, the term T20 was still half-a-decade away from being thrown in the ECB boardrooms. Uganda wasn’t even an ICC-recognized team back then. In the 1999 ODI World Cup qualifiers, Nsubuga had represented East Africa. His is a story that runs parallel with the rise of cricket in Uganda.

Born in a family of seven other siblings in the Lugogo neighborhood in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, Nsubuga’s interest in the sport took off from his parents.

“My dad worked in Lugogo as a bar man and my mother was also a working woman, serving lunch to cricket clubs in the area. That’s how I came to be interested in the sport. Our background wasn’t that strong but we were always in and around sports,” Nsubuga told The Indian Express.

The right-arm off spinner who looked effortless with his sliders and zippers on Thursday was far from it when he started out. Nsubuga narrates the tale of an intervention that set him on the trajectory for Thursday’s spell during his teenage years.

“Before bowling spin, I was a medium pacer, but I was chucking. One day, as I was doing so, Samuel Walusimbi saw me.” Walusimbi, who played for East Africa in the 1975 ODI World Cup, is regarded as one of the ‘generous contributors to Uganda cricket’. “He intervened and changed me to bowling off spin.”

Heroes, and being one

What is it that’s kept him going after all these years? “Discipline,” Nsubuga rushes to answer before sharing what his routine looks like at 43.

“Every day in the morning, I wake up by six. I do my 8-10K run. After that I prepare for the training, which starts at 9. My discipline is what has kept me going. I sleep early. Alcohol is a strict no. I see myself pushing for maybe a year or two more.”

It’s this work-rate that has made Nsubuga a big source of inspiration in the dressing room.

Ahead of the World Cup, Uganda captain Brian Masaba was asked how big it was for the 43-year-old to finally get to play at the big stage. “Frank is a certified legend in Uganda cricket. He has been doing what he does since 1996. We all have such huge respect for him because of his professionalism and passion for the game. He is indeed an inspiration and a huge role model,” Masaba said.

“He has captained me as well. The pleasure of playing alongside him for quite a while now and seeing him operate the way he has done over the years is truly amazing. He was happy that we qualified for the World Cup in his lifetime and hopefully, it will be a crowning moment for a stellar career he has had,” he added.

As a likely candidate for the crowning moment - his figures vs Papua New Guinea - came on Thursday, Masaba would concede, "I watched Frank play growing up, so to see him do what he does on the biggest stage makes me very emotional.”

This competitive push is something the Ugandan has picked from his idols - old and new. “Ricky Ponting was my idol because at the time he was playing in such a dominating team. I liked him and that’s why I took the jersey number 14,” Nsubuga shares.

But it’s the team Uganda face next that’s had an even bigger impact on their most experienced campaigner during his cricketing run. “West Indies, the way they won the (T20) World Cups, was very gripping to see. The way (Darren) Sammy led them to win. Yes, they’ve been struggling but they’re still a very good side. They play fierce cricket and have a lot of experience in that team. They have been playing good in the IPL.”

Such has been the impact of the Caribbean T20 superstars on Nsubuga in the last decade that he even named his son after one of them. “I also named my son after (Kieron) Pollard because I enjoyed the fierce brand of cricket he was playing.”

T20 World Cup: Uganda’s road to debut on the big stage – inspiration from West Indies, and a detailed roadmap

Playing as many matches as possible, giving contracts to 25 players, providing facilities, broadbasing game behind surge in football-mad country..

Frank Nsubuga says he and his teammates couldn’t sleep. “When we returned home, it was like we were dreaming with open eyes,” he tells The Indian Express.

The throwback is to November 2023. Such was the occasion for the Uganda cricket team, who had managed to qualify for their first-ever ICC World Cup, pipping the likes of Zimbabwe and Kenya – known power centres in African cricket. On Thursday, Uganda made history when they registered their first win in the World Cup as they beat Papua New Guinea in a low-scoring thriller.

But how did they get here? It would be wrong to consider their qualification as a fluke. Not long after they made it to the T20 World Cup, Uganda successfully defended their African T20 Cup title. It’s a competition that offers a stage to lesser-known sides in the continent, and of late, Uganda has emerged as a contender to compete at the pinnacle of the sport. But the ticket to the US and the West Indies wasn’t earned in a day.

Since 2020, Uganda have won more T20Is than any other nation. But while the quality of opposition they often face may not be too high, there has been a conscious decision to play as many games as possible. In fact, in the past four years, Uganda are only behind India, Pakistan and New Zealand in the number of T20Is played.

“For us, it started three and a half years ago,” says skipper Brian Masaba. “During the Covid outbreak, Lawrence Mahatlane became our coach. He drew a roadmap for us that ended with us playing at the 2024 T20 World Cup. He presented it to the board and the players, and we bought into it. After that, it was just about being very sincere about everything we did, the number of games we played, our practice sessions… all conversations were about having a chance of featuring at the T20 World Cup.”

Masaba offers an insight into the country’s cricketing system, and how players are chosen for the national team. “We have a club structure. But this particular group of players were picked from a larger squad. You can call it sort of a high-performance programme that was put in place once the roadmap was drawn. Over the last four years, the Uganda Cricket Association has managed to give contracts to 25 players.”

Among the 25 is Nsubuga, a Uganda cricket veteran, who will become one of the oldest players to play the T20 World Cup. The 43-year-old, who made his debut for the national team in 1996, remembers very different times when he had started out.

“When I was young, cricket wasn’t so easy. We used to struggle with a lot of things like equipment and had to manage most things ourselves, even on tours. Now things have changed. At least on every ICC tour, it is all paid for. We have sponsors. Nowadays, you just have to focus on working hard to be picked by the selectors,” Nsubuga says.

But it’s not just about taking care of the sport at the top. Masaba points to a more foundational change taking place in Uganda, that is likely to have a positive impact on cricket in the long run. “Football is huge in Uganda. Not only in Uganda, in Africa generally. It’s very difficult for cricket to compete with football because historically Uganda has always been a footballing nation and football is much easier to spread as it’s way more cost-effective. But with this qualification for the World Cup, the interest in cricket has grown. Now, a number of schools have started to put cricket in their curriculum, which for me is a big plus and hopefully, we will build on that platform.”

Looking up to the Windies

It is fitting that the first ICC world event that Uganda are featuring in is being co-hosted by the West Indies. With T20 being the format to open the doors for Uganda to a World Cup, their affinity towards the two-time world champions is not surprising.

“The West Indians are very popular in Uganda because of the way they play their cricket and how exciting they are to watch,” Masaba shares.

Nsubuga, who once doted on the Australian brand of cricket, has now taken a liking for the T20 stars from the Caribbean, so much so that he named his son after one. “ Ricky Ponting was my idol because at the time he was playing in such a dominating team. I liked him and that’s why I took jersey number 14. Right now, I’m following Andre Russell. Before him, I was a fan of (Kieron) Pollard. I also named my son after him (laughs), because of the fierce brand of cricket he was playing. I am a big fan of the West Indian brand of cricket.”

That brand of cricket is something the Ugandans are keen on replicating on their World Cup debut, Masaba says.

“Our brand of cricket is to enjoy and have fun in the park. We will run hard, throw ourselves around on the field. We will play with a smile on our faces. We like to win, we like to compete, but we play the game in the right spirit. We like to have a good time. Hopefully, we can show the world what Ugandan cricket has to offer.”
