Shillong: A food tour

The food habit in Shillong is a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. People mostly prefer plants and vegetables as an add-on to the dishes. The cooking style here is mostly outdoor follows slow cooking and grilling methods. People use fewer spices and give a chance to the natural flavor of the meat to flourish.

Let’s have a look at some of the traditional dishes of the region.

Jadoh

Jadoh is the signature dish of Shillong and entire Meghalaya. It is a minced pork meat dish, cooked with rice and turmeric. Natives serve this dish with smoked tomatoes and hot red chilies.

The best part of this dish is that people traditionally use raw turmeric (grind them into mortar and pestle) instead of the dried and powdered one. One can feel the nascent taste of turmeric in the dish.

Here is a recipe for this dish.

Chowmein

It sounds much like a Chinese dish, which it is, is also the most popular street food in the city. You can find people cooking Chowmein in a wok. The Shillong version of Chowmein is hot and spicy and served with pork. People generally use egg noodles to prepare this dish.

Dohneiiong

It is a pork dish and truly a must-have delicacy in Shillong. In this dish, pork is cooked in soy sauce with a generous amount of black sesame seeds. The final serving incorporates garnishing with toasted sesame seeds, which imparts a crunchy feel to the dish.

tungrymbai

It is one of the popular dishes of Shillong. It is also street food and you can find queues in the stalls selling this dish. Tungrymbai is prepared from fermented soybeans and people serve them with a slice of bread or chapati.

This dish is among the few completely vegetarian dishes of Shillong.

Do O Pura

Do O Pura is a chicken dish prepared with green mustard leaves and rice flour. Because of the mustard leaves, the dish looks light green in color and imparts the flavor of chicken and mustard.

In Shillong, you will find outlets for selling farm-fresh strawberries, raspberries, pineapple, etc. Do not forget to bring home these treats, as they have a different level of freshness and distinguishable taste from those we buy from supermarkets. People also chew betel leaves most of the time, you can try their version of betels. You can also book a taxi in Shillong on day rental and enjoy sightseeing and food trail.

Places to Visit in Shillong

Umiam Lake: Umiam Lake, a mesmerizing man-made reservoir, also known as the Barapani Lake. The scenic Umiam Lake is encircled by lush green East Khasi hills that form one of the best panoramic sights for nature-lovers in the country. The lake is popular for boating, Angling, Kayaking and Water Skiing. The sunrise at the lake is a treat to watch. The Umiam Lake has a park adjoining it which is a hotspot for picnics.  Shillong Peak: At the height of 6449 ft or 1965 m above sea level, Shillong Peak is the highest point of Shillong. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas, its waterfalls as well as of the Bangladesh plains. A telescope is available for tourists to get a bird's eye view.  Ward’s Lake: Also known as Pollock's Lake, the mesmerising lake is a popular picnic spot. In the middle of the lake is a small bridge created to enable the visitors to have a panoramic view of the entire lake or feed the tiny fishes floating around in the water (puffed rice is available at the entrance of the lake for feeding the fishes). The major highlight of the lake is definitely paddle boating. Lady Hydari Park: Named after the first lady of the state and wife of the Governor of Assam, Lady Hydari Park is a japanese styled garden. There is also a small lake with ducks and colourful fishes.  It is an ideal place to visit with children because there is a nice playing area for them. The museum and the mini zoo inside the park premises makes for a good learning experience. Spread Eagle Falls: The Spread Eagle Falls are considered to be the widest waterfall in Shillong. The scintillating waterfall is also known as Sati Falls or Urkaliar because of the belief that Ka Liar slipped into it. The majestic waterfall gushes down steep hills, towering three sides into a massive pool of water which is ideal for the tourists to sit and lounge by. The Spread Eagle Falls, which looks like an eagle with its wings spread wide (hence the name), is a popular picnic spot. Police Bazaar: Police Bazar is the major market of Shillong. In addition to an array of restaurants, hotels and big brand stores, the Police Bazaar also has a flea market popular for its traditional handicrafts stores, exquisite Meghalaya merchandise, regional apparels, junk jewellery and the like. Elephant Falls: Named after an Elephant like stone at its foot, the Elephant Falls are amongst the most popular falls in the North-East, situated next to Shillong. It is a tourists' paradise with three layers of the falls accessible from different vantage points. The first of the three waterfalls is tucked between the dense trees and is very broad. The second waterfall reduces to thin strands of water and is almost negligible in winters due to the receding water levels. The third and the most visible waterfall is the tallest with clear water flowing like a sheet of milk on the dark rocks in the backdrop. Out of the three, the third waterfall tends to strike the visitors as the most impressive.  Mawlynnong: Mawlynnong is a small village situated around 90 km from Shillong in the East Khasi Hills. It is widely popular as the cleanest village in Asia. Mawlynnong offers some of the most picturesque natural beauty with lush green valleys, crystal clear water in the river, an abundance of flowering orchids hanging from the trees and extremely clean roads. Apart from its cleanliness, Mawlynnong is also famous for its living root bridge which is one of the most popular attractions in Meghalaya. Mawsynram: Acknowledged as the wettest place in the world, the mesmerizing village of Mawsynram, located 61 kms south of Shillong is a nature lover's delight and the perfect destination for a weekend trip. Many Shillong tour packages include a day trip or 1 night stay in Mawsynram. The village is well known for its huge formation of a stalagmite, which takes after the shape of a 'Shivalinga'. Cherrapunji: Earlier the wettest place on the Earth, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, also known as Sohra, is known for its double-decker living root bridge. Located around 50 Kms from Shillong, it is included in many Shillong tour packages. Other natural attractions here include cave formations such as the Mawsmai Caves and Krem Phyllut. The misty valleys and the waterfalls in the region make a long drive through Cherrapunji ideal for those who love road trips.  Kaziranga National Park: Home to the largest population of the one-horned rhino on earth, Kaziranga National Park is one of India’s national treasures. Since it is located around 185km from Shillong, some Shillong holiday packages include a trip to this amazing wonder.  Here, a wide variety of fauna thrives including the one-horned rhino, Asiatic elephants, wild water buffalo, leopards and Royal Bengal Tigers. Kaziranga National Park is also listed officially as a Tiger reserve and is home to one of the world’s largest population of tigers.

Things to Do in Shillong

Boating & Water Sports at Umiam Lake: A leisure boat ride should never be missed at Umiam Lake. Boating is one of the most preferred activities in the region and visitors can choose between Group, Family, Couple and Solo boat rides between 9:00 AM and 05:00 PM at costs starting from INR 20. Adventure seekers can satisfy their craving for adventure sports at the Water Sports Complex by the Umiam Lake that has provisions for Solo boating, Angling, Kayaking and Water Skiing. Trek to Laitlum Canyons: Perched on the East Khasi Hills, Laitlum Canyons is a less explored but one of the most picturesque tourist and trekking destinations in Shillong. This exotic viewing site offers the best panoramic views of Meghalaya embraced by the majestic hills and valleys. To reach the viewing spot, a short 2-kilometre trek has to be undertaken. One can also choose the longer path to reach the top. There is also a challenging, yet interesting trekking opportunity for the adventure lovers and trekkers down to the Smit village, which is about 6 kms away from the Canyons. There are other small trails and paths that lead to tiny slate-roofed homes, perched at great heights.  David Scott Trail: Named after David Scott, a British officer, the David Scott Trail is an old and one of the most popular trekking routes in Meghalaya. It is a 16 kilometres long trek which stretches from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang. The trek can be done from either side, but it is commonly attempted from the Mawphlang side since it makes it a less ascending trail. The trail is not well marked and one can take the help of locals for directions. Mountain Climbing at Diengei Peak: Situated on the western side of Shillong, is 6200 ft in altitude, this peak is just 200 ft shorter than the tallest peak in Shillong, Shillong Peak. For a height of about 1000 ft, the gradient of this peak is very steep and precipitous which makes for excellent mountain climbing. Other adventurous sports like rock climbing and rappelling can be done here. If you are an adventurist, visiting here should be on top of your list of things to do in Shillong. Angling at Dawki: A small border town in the Jaintia Hills, Dawki and its famed river Umngot is a must visit if in Meghalaya. Sandwiched between India and Bangladesh, Dawki is a major center of trade between India and Bangladesh. The city becomes a hotbed of tourist activities especially during the spring months as it hosts the boat riding competition on the Umngot River. The surrounding greenery, the cold water of the river and the beautiful suspension bridge on the River Umngot make Dawki a place worth a visit. Angling is another popular activity to try at Dawki.

Delhi Food Walks

SHILLONG FOOD TOUR

This special blog marks the beginning of our food explorations across the North-Eastern states of India, the region that is pleasantly rich and diverse in topography, demography and culture.

Our Northeastern food trail began from Meghalaya’s capital Shillong, whose breathtaking natural beauty has catapulted it into a popular tourist destination for all the nature-loving travelers. Due to the picturesque beauty and pleasant climate, this city was once referred to as the ‘Scotland of the East’.

In this northeast culinary expedition of ours, we have until now covered a minuscule of the pristine expanse but we soon intend to discover more of its breathtaking beauty.

Shillong is a place that is mostly inhabited by the Khasi tribe, hence the local food scene here is primarily dominated by the Khasi tribe. So join us on this exciting food tour across Shillong. In this venture we were joined by two zealous food explorers Lynty and Sayan walked us around and assisted us in this culinary discovery.

In this brief account we have covered our street food trail in Police bazaar and also the traditional Khasi meal that we had at Linty’s place. Our journey began with a lovely drive from Guwahati to Shillong through the beautiful landscape and pleasant weather.

On reaching Shillong we directly went ahead to join our hosts Lynty and Sayan who were waiting for us at Police Bazaar. It is a prominent shopping, hangout and food hub in the capital city. The place was crowded yet very lively. We straightaway walked up to the food area that was lined with numerous stalls selling local and popular street food fares.

Here Lynti introduced us to the most ubiquitous Khasi delicacy called Jado. Few minutes into the walk and we soon realised how much did the locals loved the dish. It is rice cooked along with meat and a few other ingredients. Unlike the usual case here they have cooked the rice separately without meat and while serving it they topped it with a chicken or pork curry. It was simple yet super delicious.

Next we tried some freshly barbecued chicken which is another local favourite. The neatly defined flavours of pure succulent meat makes it an irresistible snack.

Further, while ambling down the lanes of the marketplace, we stopped by a Pakoda seller to try some hot Pakodas. This gentleman from Bihar has been successfully selling these humble fritters for the past 40 plus years. They were quite toothsome.

After that brief street food trail that was interspersed with crazy downpours, we reached Lynti’s house to savour some traditional Khasi dishes for dinner. We were welcomed by her warm and genial family. Then followed an enlightening conversation in the tranquil setting. With the clock announcing dinnertime, we couldn’t contain our excitement to try the meal. The spread included Jastem, Shriew, Doh sniang Trykhong, Dohneiiong, Tungtap, tamarind pickle, etc. No wonder the meal cooked with so much affection and care was distinctly scrumptious. We particularly loved the Doh sniang trykhong which was a simple dish made with smoked pork and pumpkin. From the very first morsel we could relate to the fact the Kashi cuisine is minimalistic yet delectable. The best part was of the delicacies were the clean flavours of the major components i.e. the meat or vegetables.

The day’s culinary escapade gave us some insights about the Khasi cuisine. It is minimalistic in nature with very little use of spices or fats.  Rice, pork and chicken are their staple food.  They also consume a lot of local vegetables like yam, pumpkin etc.  The dishes are mostly prepared with onions, ginger, garlic, chilies, sesame seed paste, turmeric and mustard oil.  Smoking and fermentation are two chief culinary practices of the khasi cuisine.

Post-meal it was time to have Kwai. It refers to areca nuts. The tradition of eating areca nuts with or without betel leaves, was an integral part of the Kashi tradition so in Shillong you will find every other person chewing kwai. People offer it as a mark of friendship, hospitality and honour so refusing the kwai is considered to be an ill etiquette.

Soon it was time to convey our gratitude and bid goodbye to our generous hosts for the yummy food, warm hospitality, and useful insights. The beginning being great we were thrilled for the rest of the adventure in this marvelous region.

From Pop-Tarts to Happy Meals, a food writer recreates American classics with an Asian flavor

The cooking series is as playful as it is cathartic. Frankie Gaw, a former UX designer, conjured up fun brand names and designs to go with each meal. The goal is to be unapologetically himself.

Frankie Gaw's social media page is filled with videos of creations like these — items you won't usually find at your local American grocery store.

That’s the whole point, says Gaw, a Taiwanese American food creator and author of the cookbook First Generation.

“I asked myself, in an alternate universe, where the world is much more inclusive and embraced all of these diverse flavors, what are the things that Asian Americans would want to see?” he said.

Gaw talked with NPR about how his hit social media cooking series “Turning American classics Asian" came to be, and its origin as a tribute to his family and his Midwest upbringing.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Frankie Gaw (@littlefatboyfrankie)

The grocery store seemed stuck in time

The idea sprouted after a trip to his local supermarket. Traversing through the aisles, Gaw noticed that much of the food stocked on the shelves resembled what he saw as a kid 20 years ago. Meanwhile, ingredients like soy sauce and miso were still strictly grouped in “Asian” or “International" aisles.

“Restaurants have been embracing more Asian ingredients, and it feels like grocery stores have remained the same," Gaw said.

For many immigrants and children of immigrants, food is an intimate part of identity. For Gaw, straddling between the “Asian” aisle and the rest of the grocery store was also symbolic of his upbringing in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Growing up, Gaw felt like he was living a double life. In public, Gaw enjoyed McDonald’s chicken nuggets and fries. At home, he feasted on his grandmother’s beef noodle soup. It took time for him to embrace his dual-taste palette.

Years later in his Seattle apartment, Gaw began experimenting with his childhood favorites. He tinkered with Campbell's cream of mushroom soup and turned it into congee. He infused mac and cheese with miso. He went as far as designing the packaging for each meal as if he owned a food company.

Gaw shared his concoctions on social media. It took off. His food and his experiences at the grocery store resonated with people, especially other Asian Americans.

“It was a surprise. I didn't realize how many people had similar experiences as me," he said.

A love letter to his kid self

“Turning American classics Asian” is not just about Gaw’s appreciation for Asian flavors and ingredients, or a diss to American staples. Instead, it’s Gaw’s way of paying homage to both — and on a larger scale, to the experiences of Asian Americans.

“I have always straddled this sort of in-between space,” he said. “Growing up in the Midwest, I never felt Asian enough. But then, being with my Asian family, I didn’t feel American enough.”

How 'SalviSoul,' first Salvadoran cookbook from a major U.S. publisher, came together

Had matcha flavored Twinkies or strawberry lychee Pop-Tarts been around when Gaw was younger, he thinks it would’ve helped him embrace that in-between experience.

“If I was in a generic American grocery store and then I saw rice cakes, I think that would’ve allowed me to break down the walls of, ‘Oh this only exists within my home,’ ” he said. “And I could’ve existed as my whole self out in the world.”

The project also relates back to his family and growing up in the Midwest

Gaw’s journey into cooking and his first cookbook were motivated by his father, who died in 2014 from lung cancer. Revisiting his father and his paternal grandmother’s old dishes was a way to grieve and keep his father’s memory alive, Gaw said.

In this cooking series, he also reminisces about the time spent with his mother. It’s because of her that Gaw was able to indulge on Lunchables, Twinkies and Pop-Tarts as a kid. She wanted to make sure he would fit in and make friends.

“My mom would stock the entire pantry so that when I go into lunch period, I was like the number one kid in the cafeteria with the best lunch,” he said.

The project also stems from Gaw’s Midwestern roots. In his neighborhood, restaurants were synonymous with fast food and Olive Garden was the place to go on special occasions.

Late nights with his parents at the McDonald's drive-through were common as a kid, Gaw said, because his parents were often exhausted after long hours at work. “It was a reminder of how much they had to hustle,” he said.

In Gaw’s version of a Happy Meal, he steams buns and marries ground pork with scallions and ginger, topping it off with a chili crunch ketchup.

As he cooks, he thinks about his father, his mother, his grandparents — and the comfort that these dishes would’ve brought them as they were adjusting to life in America.

“I think they always felt like they were on the outside breaking in," he said. "To see their food at a fast food institution, I think it would've made them feel like they have a seat at the table."
