Work and Travel in Sweden
Help us grow. share what you know about getting work in sweden for travellers., volunteer and paid work opportunities in sweden for travellers.
Sweden is known as one of the most expensive countries in the world to visit. For the humble backpacker, it can be difficult to really get a feel for this country if your budget only stretches to seven nights. But volunteering opportunities in Sweden are available for those who want to jump into the wild. Here’s our travel guide for Sweden, designed for backpackers who want to work and travel. 1. Become a Bear Tracker in Northern Sweden Most people don’t know that there are still bears in Europe. They’re endangered and if you want to work in Sweden you could help track their movements. These volunteering projects are open to the total novice as you’ll receive full training, support, and all the materials you need to get started. It’s a chance to explore Sweden’s vast wilderness and to help protect the few remaining bears at the same time. 2. Help Out in a Sustainability Community in Gotland Work and travel in Sweden can take you to some of the quietest parts of Europe. One of these places is Gotland, an area of stunning natural beauty. You could spend your weeks there working in a sustainability community. These communities aim to be largely self-sufficient, which includes growing their own food, harvesting resources from the land, and protecting the natural greenery around them. It’s an excellent way of making new friends and enjoying some of the best natural sights in Sweden. 3. Restore Old Buildings in Sweden One thing you’ll learn about travel in Sweden is that the locals love to have a quiet place in the countryside. A great volunteering opportunity in Sweden is restoration of old buildings. Do you have a strong work ethic and a desire to restore older structures to their former glory? Then helping out with construction can be a great way to do it. You don’t need any prior experience and even some basic DIY skills is more than enough to win you a place with these private projects.
VOLUNTEER WORK VISA / PERMIT REQUIREMENTS FOR SWEDEN
Sweden is part of the European Union (EU) and part of the Schengen Zone. That means your Schengen visa will apply to the whole of the area. You can spend a total of 90 days in the entire area, before you have to leave for a minimum of 90 days. This applies to all nationalities, apart from residents of the UK and EU, who can stay and work indefinitely. North Americans, the Japanese, South Koreans, Australians, and Kiwis are able to obtain this visa for free when they arrive. However, Russians and South Africans have to apply for a Schengen visa in advance.
SEASONAL BACKPACKER SKILLS NEEDED IN SWEDEN
Spring work.
The short spring season from the end of March until the end of May is a great time to travel in Sweden because this is when many homestays are looking for volunteers. These could be farms in rural communities that want some extra work getting the farm up and running. They could also be lodges and country retreats readying themselves for the summer season. The work is varied at this time of year and it’s a good time to start connecting with the locals.
SUMMER JOBS
The long summer season, particularly the Midsummer holiday, is the ideal time to work and travel in Sweden. Depending on your skillset, you can find all types of work throughout the country. In the cities you can easily find work as a volunteer in hostels. These jobs will usually give you a free bed and free food in exchange for just a few hours of work per day. You can also join the many charities working with Sweden’s new immigrant arrivals. The country has received an influx of refugees and charities always need new volunteers to help them with education and finding their way around. It’s also a good time to head up to the more remote areas of the country. Many of the retreats, lodges, resorts, and adventure sports groups are only open for a few months of the year, so you can experience some incredible things if you get off the conventional backpacking routes.
In autumn Swedes go back to school and university. If you love working with young children, it’s a great chance to teach English in Sweden. This is a country that prides itself on having such a high proportion of English speakers. The curriculum prioritises English learning from a young age, so native English speakers will be able to find work as tutors either in schools or through private contacts. Sometimes this work can pay, but most of it is only available on a voluntary basis. Either way, you’ll make new friends, help set Swedish children up for the future, and be able to extend your stay in this beautiful country.
Winter in Sweden can be bitterly cold. Many travellers prefer to leave the area during this season. However, if you’re not scared of a little cold you can take advantage of Sweden’s winter sports industry. Ski resorts like Klappen, Branas, and Are are just some of the places that could provide you with volunteer opportunities in Sweden. Qualified ski instructors can find work with good pay and accommodation included. You don’t need to be a master to land this type of work. Even if you’re only taking beginner classes it’s possible to find work in Sweden if you apply a few months in advance.
ATTITUDE TO FOREIGNERS WORKING OR VOLUNTEERING IN SWEDEN
Sweden is one of the most foreigner friendly countries in the whole world. It has opened its doors to immigrants from all over the world, which is why it’s become so cosmopolitan over the last twenty years. Over 90% of the population have a good to fluent grasp of English. It’s not uncommon for young backpackers to want to work in Sweden, so you’ll experience no problems volunteering here. This applies both to urban and rural areas. It makes it one of the best countries for novice backpackers who want to get started with working and travelling. Are you ready to work and travel in Sweden?

Nordic Visitor as a Workplace
![travel jobs sweden travel jobs sweden](https://www.nordicvisitor.com/images/about-us/nv2024-website-about-us-staff-image.png)
As the travel industry is very fast paced, we're always striving not just to keep up, but to stay ahead. So we encourage our staff to continually develop their talents with a professional training program.
Work Processes and Organisation We've been steadily working towards streamlining our operations and improving our work processes.
Nordic Visitor has a clear strategic vision, which staff help shape through regular company-wide workshops. Employees are also kept up to date on major initiatives and regular operations with our monthly internal newsletter.
In order to track all of our major projects, we have implemented work processes and use collaborative systems to enable teamwork. Throughout the years we have also developed and adapted front- and back-office software that communicates with both our external website and accounting system. This system maintains a detailed record of all our tours, as well as income and expenses.
Work Facilities Nordic Visitor’s head office is located in Iceland. Since 2016, the home of our Iceland office has been Bíldshöfði 20, 110 Reykjavik. This location gives us room to grow, while ensuring a spacious, bright and comfortable work environment for everyone. It also benefits from ample parking and is in close proximity to Strætó city bus stops. The facilities also include a large, inviting cafeteria where lunch is served daily and complimentary snacks, tea and coffee are available during working hours.
The Stockholm office is located in a renovated office space at Alsnögatan 11, on lower Södermalm. The space is bright and airy and offers comfortable working facilities. There is also a beautiful outdoor spaceas the office has access to a large shared terrace overlooking the canal. The Stockholm office space also includes a large conference/lunch room, complimentary snacks, tea and coffee available during working hours, and a shared, in-house restaurant serving lunch, drinks and “fika”.
The Edinburgh office is located at 139/2 George Street in the New Town and at the heart of the city centre. The space is bright and airy and offers comfortable working conditions and a stimulating work environment. Located close to shops, restaurants and the beautiful Princes Street Gardens, the office has views of Edinburgh Castle and Firth of Forth. There’s a meeting room, breakout space and kitchen facilities. Employees have access to complimentary snacks, tea and coffee during working hours.
![travel jobs sweden travel jobs sweden](https://www.nordicvisitor.com/images/about-us/atvinna/vr-firm-year-stimp-logo-ens.png)
We also encourage open communication throughout the company. Therefore, we regularly conduct opinion surveys, in association with trade union VR, to check on our employees' well-being at work. Time and again, results show that employee attitudes regarding Nordic Visitor, both as an employer and as a company, are very positive.
Employee pride and satisfaction also rank consistently high, so our employee turnover has remained low. In our most recent VR survey, Nordic Visitor scored among the highest of all tourism companies in Iceland in terms of employee attitudes toward their workplace.
Nordic Visitor has been honoured as “Company of the Year” at the Iceland labour union’s annual awards ceremony for four consecutive years, from 2017 to 2020. This is thanks to the positive perception of the company among staff members and the high rate of staff participation in the annual VR survey.
The aim of the survey is to examine the working conditions and well-being of employees, their attitudes towards managers, and the quality of communication in the workplace, to name but a few. Therefore, this VR recognition is extremely valuable to us. It is a confirmation from the people behind Nordic Visitor that we are on the right track when it comes to our focus and Human Resources policies.
The atmosphere outside of the workplace is just as dynamic. Nordic Visitor has a very active employee association, with regular social events organised by both the company and our in-house social committees.

Best time to go on your Swedish Working Holiday
Sweden has beautiful and hot summers and then freezing winters with plenty of snow and temperatures around freezing point and lower. I visited a friend in Stockholm one winter and I arrived with the temperature -15 degrees Celsius and a blizzard on the way which saw the temperature drop to -21 degrees Celsius. I have never been so cold! Going on a working holiday for 12 months means you will experience every season however, if you are not use to the cold weather you may want to first arrive during the warmer months. But really, anytime is a good time to start your working holiday.
Things to do on arrival in Sweden
When you arrive in Sweden, there are some things you need to do before you can begin to live, work and play in Sweden. These include:
- Register with a Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to pay taxes from your wages.
- Register with Swedish Social Insurance Agency ( Försäkringskassan ). This will allow you to use public health services in Sweden. If you are an EU citizen, you should also have your EHIC with you. Check out the official EU website for more details.
- Find somewhere to live

Once things are sorted, start enjoying your working holiday in Sweden
Accommodation in Sweden
Most who come to Sweden on a working will start in Stockholm . There is plenty of short-term accommodation available including in hostels and hotels. For something longer a small flat can be found. I suggest you book your initial accommodation for at least 2 weeks. This is because by the time you have recovered from jet lag or any time differences, done some sightseeing, organised the things mentioned to do on your arrival and found somewhere long-term to live, the 2 weeks will almost be up. Some places to stay include:
Hostels are a great place to start your working holiday in Sweden as they are full of other travellers. City Backpackers is a great place to start as it is the most popular hostel in Stockholm for Backpackers. It has also won the best hostel award in Sweden from HostelWorld . The facilities offered are clean, modern with heated floors in the showers – great during the cold winter months. Skanstulls Hostel is another great hostel to begin your Swedish working holiday. It is next to the Skanstulls metro station making it easy for you to jump on the metro to explore. For more hostel options in Stockholm and Sweden and to get pricing and to book check out HostelWorld .
Hotels are in abundance in Stockholm and the rest of Sweden. If looking for a budget to mid-range hotel to begin your year in Sweden check out Comfort Hotel Xpress or the NOFO Hotel BW Premier Collection . For more options, or for something with a little more luxury check out the map following.
To find long-term accommodation for your one year working holiday in Sweden check out websites such as Bostadd Direkt , blocket , Easyroommate.com or dn .
Working Holiday Jobs in Sweden
The good news about working in Sweden is that English is spoken widely so you do not need to speak or write the Swedish language, however, learning some Swedish words and phrases will help.
Most working holiday makers to Sweden usually find work in one of the three major cities: Stockholm, Malmo and Gotenborg where you could find a job in an office, retail store, hospitality venue or with a family as an Au Pair. Also, along the coastline, between the major cities, there is also work, particularly in the holiday resorts during the summer months. During the long winter months you may find work in a ski resort. And there is seasonal agriculture work picking fruit and vegetables available. Find out more about working in Sweden on the official EU website and check out the job board.
You could also find work in your accommodation. Many hostels are run by travellers who are happy to work on reception or clean rooms. In return for working you are provided with accommodation, which might be a bed in a dorm room, meals while on duty and a wage. Some travellers even work in return for free accommodation. Find out about working in a hostel here.
Au Pair in Sweden
Being an Au Pair in Sweden is a popular option. One of the best things about this type of work is positions are live-in, so that takes care of a job and a place to live in the one go. Duties include basic cleaning around the house as well as looking after children and their needs. For a position check out employment companies such as Aupair or AupairWorld .
Useful sites to find employment in Sweden include JobsinStockholm which lists jobs for English speakers in Sweden and is a great place to start looking for employment, as are the following sites The Local , Sweden Jobs and Swedish Work .
You could also consider being a digital nomad in Sweden. Wifi is pretty fast however, the cost of living is quite high, but if your business is portable and you want to spend time in Sweden, well why not?
Playing and Travelling in Sweden
This is the best part of any holiday in Sweden. And there is plenty to see and do. You will definitely need to visit Sweden’s capital, Stockholm , with its Gamla Stan (Old City), palaces and islands to explore. But there are plenty of other towns like Helsingborg, Malmö, Ystad, Lundt, Halmstad, Gothenburg, Angelholm and Kristianstad to name a few that are easily accessible by car, bus and train. Each town has something different to offer from historic buildings to cathedrals to museums to coffee shops and shopping districts. Check out some of the tours following.
How to Travel around Sweden (Planes, trains and automobiles)
Sweden is serviced by a number of airports. In Stockholm, there is Arlanda airport, situated a mere forty kilometres north of the centre of Stockholm. Then there are smaller airports of Bromma, Skavsta and Vasteras and in Gothenburg, Landvetter and Gothenburg City. However, it is often easier to stay on the ground.
Train and Bus travel in Sweden
Train and bus are standard modes of transport for getting around Sweden. Buses are the more economical option and train travel, is the fastest way between two cities with train stations conveniently located in the centre of town. It will depend on your preference, and the routes you plan to take.
Train Tavel in Sweden
Sweden’s rail network is one of the most efficient and most advanced in Europe. The network is run by SJ and major routes are serviced by the X2000 high-speed gains. These trains typically reach speeds of up to 125 mph and see travellers leaving Stockholm and arriving in Gothenburg in under 3 hours. There are plenty of other high speed trains to take you to other Swedish destinations. SJ offer Flexi-pass that allows travel in first and second class and between three and five days of travel during a one month period. These passes can start at just over Sek 100. Scandal also offers a flexipass allowing up to 10 days of travel, including ferry journeys in a 2 month period within Scandinavia. Sweden is also part of the Eurail network so check out their passes.

Bus routes are extensive in Sweden and reach many places. Check out fares and passes with Swebus, FlixBus and Eurolines.

Norway's schibsted to cut 250 jobs in cost drive.
OSLO (Reuters) - Norwegian online classified ads group Schibsted will cut around 250 jobs in the Nordic region as part of a restructuring plan to reduce costs and boost efficiency, the company said on Tuesday.
Schibsted, which recently divested its legacy news media business, operates online marketplaces for real estate, jobs, cars, travel and other services in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.
"We are now in a position to start taking decisive measures to improve our profitability as a more focused company, and to adjust to the macroeconomic environment," Schibsted Marketplaces CEO Christian Printzell Halvorsen said.
"This is not a one-off, but rather the start of a journey of continuous improvement and cost focus," he added.
