Avoided packing your linen trousers and favourite shirts because you don't trust the iron at your hotel not to burn the creases out of them? You're not the only one.

But, if you've been staring a little too hard at the couple opposite and wondering just how they got their clothes looking so freshly pressed, the answer might come in the form of a travel steamer .

Maybe not the most exciting thing you'll throw in your suitcase but almost definitely one of the most useful, a travel steamer gives you the freedom to pack along all of the best parts of your wardrobe without worrying about removing the creases after a long journey.

A travel steamer not only helps you to save space and weight in your luggage (as well as avoid potential damage to your clothes from ironing), but it can also sanitise and deodorise your clothes, killing bacteria and eliminating odours from a suitcase that's past its best.

The best travel steamers are small enough to fit in your bag and light enough to carry around without taking up too much of your precious baggage restriction . In fact, you'll find travel steamers come in all sizes depending on the water tank capacity, the heating element and the design of the nozzle and handle.

It might go without saying but a larger steamer has a bigger capacity and can steam larger clothes without, well, running out of steam. You'll want a steamer that's powerful enough to produce enough steaming power to smooth out your clothes, and efficient enough to heat up quickly and last long. The performance and efficiency of a travel steamer depends on the wattage, the steam output, the heat-up time and the run time.

One final thing to keep in mind: wattage varies around the world, so you may want to invest in a voltage converter depending on where you're heading off to.

The best clothes steamers are shortcuts to ironing , straightening out creases within minutes while generally using less electricity . Whereas ironing boards can take up space in a small home, steamer irons just require somewhere to hang your garment and a nearby plug.

They’re not just for occasional use: the best handheld clothes steamers can hold enough water to get through a few items of clothes before needing refilling, while freestanding clothes steamers can manage whole laundry loads. Cordless clothes steamers would seem to be the next step, but they’ve not yet hit the shelves in the UK.

Clothes steamers are multi-functional pieces of kit, too. They can be used for cleaning curtains and upholstery, killing the majority of bacteria and removing stale odours. They let you de-crease duvets without removing them from the bed and, if you have a work shirt that needs a little freshen-up, steaming it is far better for the environment than throwing it into the washing machine and tumble dryer . (Talking of which, heated airers are a newfound godsend for the energy-aware.)

You can find our full reviews of the best clothes steamers below , followed by some tips from fashion experts on how to use them. But if you’re in a hurry, here’s a quick look at our top five:

The best clothes steamers, at a glance

  • Best overall - Russell Hobbs Steam Genie 2-in-1 Garment Steamer
  • Best value clothes steamer - Cadrim clothes steamer
  • Best travel clothes steamer - Tefal Pure Pop
  • Best looking clothes steamer - Steamery Cirrus 3 Iron Steamer
  • Best folding clothes steamer - Philips 3000 Series Handheld Steamer

Is a clothes steamer worth it?

“Absolutely,” says Emma Lightbown , fashion stylist of 12 years for Gymshark and other brands. “There are so many fabrics in our wardrobes that benefit from having a steamer rather than an iron. They are much more effective on pleated skirts and dresses and on tricky-to-iron areas like frills and gathered or puffed shoulders.”

Retail expert and founder of Current Boutique Carmen Lopez agrees, saying, “A clothes steamer is definitely worth the investment. First, it’s easier to use a steamer than an iron. They can help eliminate odours and refresh clothing between washes.” She uses her steamer for wrinkle removal in delicate silks and cashmere as well as cotton, linen and wool.

How we tested the best clothes steamers

best clothes steamers 2024

Over three weeks, we (Simon and Rebecca) swapped our irons for clothes steamers to see how effective they really were. We steamed shirts, dresses, trousers and bedding in various fabrics. We were looking for ease of use, tank capacity, heat-up time, cord length and useful extra features. Here’s what we found, starting with our favourite...

Best clothes steamers

1. russell hobbs steam genie 2-in-1 garment steamer.

£39, Amazon

Best overall, 9/10

We like: it’s extremely powerful

We don’t like: all the weight is at one end

Russell Hobbs Steam Genie 2-in-1 Garment Steamer

  • 150ml water tank
  • 1.21kg weight

Reviewed by Rebecca Astill

Russell Hobbs’ new Steam Genie works as both a clothes steamer and an iron. It’s undeniably one of the best performing steamers on this list. I tried it on my bedding, which was satisfyingly crease free within a few minutes. I’d hope so, given it uses 1700 Watts (54p of electricity per hour at current prices).

The water tank is only middling (the Cadrim and Swan steamers are much bigger) but the cord is long and flexible, which is especially great for steaming bedding. It heats up quickly and produces a lot of steam, which it steadily distributes as you go. To be quite honest, it was far more effective than I’d expected.

Unfortunately it has a slightly uncomfortable weight distribution – a large head which gets filled with water and a thin handle. It’s not too bad when holding upright to steam clothes, but as soon as you do anything horizontally or even at an angle, you feel the weight on your wrist.

If you’re strong of wrist and looking for a super powerful steamer and iron in one, I’d recommend buying the Russell Hobbs 2-in-1. If you’re just after a basic steamer, look further down this list.

2. Cadrim clothes steamer

£35.01, Amazon

Best value, 9/10

We like : continuous steam for 9 minutes on a full tank

We don’t like : too big to take on holiday

Cadrim clothes steamer best clothes steamer

  • 1500W power
  • 280ml water tank
  • 20 second heat-up
  • 1.1kg weight

Reviewed by Simon Lewis

Cadrim is a small company that started out making beauty products and their steamer was recommended to me by a beautician friend. She said it changed her life after years battling with spitting, underpowered handheld steamers that leave watermarks on your clothes.

The Cadrim heats up quickly, with a light that tells you when it’s ready to use (never longer than 20 seconds) and the jet is noticeably stronger than most other steamers on test. There are two simple settings: trigger-activated and continuous steam. It can last over 20 minutes in trigger-activated mode and about half that in continuous. The reason for the long run-time is the big, 280ml tank. That does make it a big unit, though – more than twice the size of the Philips, below – so it’s best suited for home use.

Lots of steamers have a brush head, but this one also has a lint remover head - useful when steaming wool, velvet, gaberdine and other materials that tend to attract fluff and hair.

It falls down slightly when used horizontally: the steam holes are quite large, so you get a certain amount of dribbling. But we have this on permanent standby for freshening up clothes that come out of the wardrobe wrinkled. It doesn’t look bad standing on the sideboard either.

3. Tefal Pure Pop

£49.99, Amazon

Best travel steamer, 9/10

We like : super-slim design takes up very little space

We don’t lik e: water reservoir needs frequent refilling

Tefal Pure Pop best clothes steamers 2024

  • 1300W power
  • 70ml water tank
  • 15 second heat-up

Tefal’s mini-steamer, which comes in three bright colours, is the one you’d want to pack for holiday. It’s only the thickness of a paperback but packs a 1,300-Watt punch. The clever reversible faceplate has a velvet ring on one side for protecting delicates and a lint-removal side on the other, which removes hair and fluff as you go. I found that both of them helped create a better seal between the steamer and the garment, multiplying its crease-busting effect.

The only drawback is the tiny water reservoir built into the handle, which I had to refill after each shirt. Some long dresses needed two or three refills to finish. You wouldn’t choose it as an at-home workhorse, but if all you want is to freshen up a frock before dinner at the hotel, it’s perfect.

4. Propress MINI

£110, Amazon

Best steamer for bedding and curtains, 9/10

We like : easy to use, with two steaming modes and excellent results

We don’t like : awkward shape to pack

Propress MINI best clothes steamers 2024

  • 1,350W power
  • 130ml water tank (or optional 230ml Big Belly tank)
  • 750g weight
  • 45 seconds heat up time

Reviewed by Victoria Young

Lightweight and portable (although not so portable that I would pack it for a holiday) Propress’s MINI is really simple to use and heats up quickly. The cord is long and flexible and there is the option to choose continuous steam, which is good for bedding. I tried it on my newly-made but sadly crumpled bed and it morphed into hotel-grade presentation within a few minutes. Not that I needed this, but an added bonus is that the steamer is effective for treating bed bugs and it kills 99.9 percent of bacteria.

The MINI’s heated, coated aluminium iron plate allows for simultaneous steaming and pressing and can be used either vertically or horizontally. I tested it on fabrics from cord to cotton, including an impossible-to-iron pie crust collar, pleated culottes and a shirt made from easily creased satin, all of which I avoid wearing because of ironing-dread. The results were impressive.

The water tank is definitely on the small side, but for an extra £20, dedicated steaming devotees can invest in a ‘big belly’ tank option, which nearly doubles the capacity and steaming time, making it a good choice for linen and curtains.

I dread getting the iron and ironing board out but having a steamer next to the cupboard has been a game-changer: I’ve never looked so well turned out. In short, I’m a total convert. In fact, I’m never ironing again.

5. Breville EliteTEMP Handheld Garment Steamer

£59.98, Amazon

Best clothes steamer for larger loads

We like: the steamer can go for 16 minutes at a time

We don’t like: it’s quite bulky

Breville EliteTEMP best clothes steamers

  • 240ml water tank
  • 1.66kg weight

Due to its bulk the Breville EliteTEMP is not necessarily one to travel with – but for larger loads at home it could be perfect, with a large 240ml water tank and 16 minutes of run time before it needs refilling. It comes in an attractive glossy white and champagne gold finish and, despite taking up room lengthways, it’s actually quite thin which keeps the weight off.

The weight is evenly distributed across the handle and head, with a thinner part in the middle to hold. The buttons are completely self-explanatory and the water tank easily clips on and off.

I tested this Breville clothes steamer both on larger loads of laundry and denser fabrics, using the stiffer brush attachment. The hot steam option succeeded in taking wrinkles out of jeans and jackets after around eight minutes, while thinner materials like linen took just a couple of minutes each.

All in all, it’s convenient, versatile and powerful. A great everyday option to replace a less regular iron.

6. Steamery Cirrus 3 Iron Steamer

£150, John Lewis

Best looking clothes steamer, 9/10

We like: it’s beautiful and excellent quality

We don’t like: £150 is extortionate for a handheld clothes steamer

Steamery Cirrus No. 3 Iron Steamer best clothes steamers

  • 90ml water tank
  • 860g weight

Scandi brand Steamery is on a mission to prove that clothes can last a lifetime if we look after them, with their range of beautifully aesthetic lint rollers, fabric shavers, laundry products and of course clothes steamers. The Cirrus 3 is the latest in the range and has an eye-watering price tag. But just look at it.

I know you can’t just buy something because it looks pretty, so let me tell you about its performance. My first attempt with this steamer was on an H&M pinstriped shirt in the back of my cupboard that I avoid wearing, purely for the fact it’s so awkward to iron. The Steamery Cirrus 3 straightened it within three minutes.

It’s simple to use, even without instructions as it only has two buttons. There’s a small chamber in the bottom of the handle which can be pulled out, filled and re-inserted. Then you simply turn it on, leave it to heat for 30 seconds, then press the steamer button. The handle is ergonomic with an indent on the inside of the handle to grip and the head is flat, with an ironing plate. The Cirrus 3 has a bit of weight to it, but only to the extent it feels good quality rather than heavy.

£150 is a lot to spend on a clothes steamer, which is the reason this steamer isn’t number one on our list. But I’ve found myself reaching for it more often than my previous clothes steamer and it feels like it will last forever, unlike the cheaper options. It doesn’t hurt that it looks good enough to leave out of a cupboard.

7. Fridja F10 Handheld Clothes Steamer

£90.69, Amazon

Best portable clothes steamer

We like: the easy to attach, anti-scale tank which makes it easy to see how much is left

We don’t like: the short cable

Fridja F10 Handheld Clothes Steamer best clothes steamers 2024

  • 260ml water tank
  • 900g weight

Fridja is the first choice of steamer for The Telegraph’s fashion team, which is reason enough to invest. This steamer is reasonably expensive for a handheld but it’s excellently built, powerful and lightweight.

One of the reasons our fashion team loves it so much is the water tank. It’s clear, so you can see how much water you have left as you steam, unlike clothes steamers which have tanks built into the handle. It’s also an anti calcium tank to reduce scaling and upkeep and attaches and de-attaches with ease.

There are some very minor design flaws. Firstly, the measurements on the water tank are upside down when you fill it up. Secondly, the cable is shorter than others I tried, so you need to be near a plug socket.

But despite those niggles and the fact it is slightly pricey, the Fridja Handheld Clothes Steamer excels at treating wrinkles and is one of the easiest to use.

8. Philips 3000 Series Handheld Steamer

£37.99, John Lewis

Best folding steamer, 9/10

We like : folds down to the size of a beer can

We don’t like : small tank means the steam runs out quickly

Philips 3000 Series Handheld Steamer best clothes steamers

  • 1000W power
  • 100ml water tank

The Philips is designed, like the Tefal Pure Pop, to be taken on holiday. It’s wider than the Tefal but the handle folds down. Neither takes up very much space in your suitcase. I found the Philips better for delicates and sequins, since the faceplate is plastic, not metal, reducing the risk of scorching them.

You get about five minutes’ steam per tank, which is more than the Tefal but still needs frequent refilling. One slight drawback is that there’s no brush for velvet clothes. And, with its small face and single row of holes, it wouldn’t be much use for horizontal steaming. (I rarely do that anyway.) Overall, this is a useful travelling companion at a pretty reasonable price.

9. Swan Portable Garment Steamer

£29.97, Amazon

Best steamer for linen, 8/10

We like : turbo feature to get stubborn creases out

We don’t like : it’s the heaviest we tried

Swan Portable Garment Steamer best clothes steamers

  • 300ml water tank
  • 1.4kg weight

It would be hard to choose between this and the Cadrim, which has similar power and capacity. You might be swayed by the British brand name (Swan is a 100 year-old Midlands manufacturer) but like most of the others, it’s actually made in China. Like the Cadrim, it has a lockable trigger for continuous steam and a particularly decent brush head.

The ceramic faceplate with multiple holes makes it almost as good as the Russell Hobbs for horizontal use, but my favourite feature is the turbo steam function, which is noticeably more effective than the others on stubborn creases in linen and stiff cotton. It uses up water much more quickly, but to compensate, the Swan has the biggest tank of them all.

If the compact Philips is the Danny DeVito of garment steamers, this is the Arnold Schwarzenegger. (Yes, I did watch Twins recently.)

In the same range:

If you’re not into size, Swan also do a foldable steamer with the same amount of power but a much smaller (120ml) tank.

10. Beldray Handheld Garment Steamer

£24.95, Beldray

Best ergonomic clothes steamer

We like: the lock on the trigger button for continuous steam

We don’t like: relatively short cord

Beldray Handheld Garment Steamer best clothes steamer 2024

  • 1100W power
  • 180ml water tank
  • 1.08kg weight

I generally find Beldray products outperform their price and are excellent options for anyone either foraying into the world of a new appliance, or perhaps looking for a cheaper option to match lesser use. (Their Titanium Smartflex made my review of the best cordless vacuums ). Beldray’s clothes steamer is no different - a reliable workhorse for less than £25.

That’s not to say it compromises on quality, with a ceramic soleplate and a fabric attachment that looks luxe, a fast 30 second heat up time and a 180ml detachable water tank. It couldn’t be easier to use and I particularly like the lock function, which emits continuous steam rather than using the trigger button. The ceramic soleplate is smooth over clothes and the 180ml water tank is plenty.

The cord is a little shorter than those I rate more highly so you’ll need to be nearer a plug. The body of the steamer also looks and feels quite plasticky, although it does curve pleasingly in hand and is lovely and lightweight. Considering it’s not the kind of appliance you’ll have on display, the cheap look isn’t really a problem.

11. Beautural Handheld Garment Steamer

£22.79, Amazon

Best budget clothes steamer

We like: it’s very lightweight

We don’t like: very plasticky

Beautural Handheld Garment Steamer best clothes steamer 2024

  • 1200W power
  • 930g weight

Amazon’s Beautural Steamer is not too dissimilar from the Beldray above, with the same lock function on the trigger button, removable water tank at the foot and 1.9m cord. The key differences are separate lint and soft brush attachments and a creaser, an attachment designed to steam trousers or remove particularly stubborn creases. Effectively, the creaser clamps the clothes to the steamer for particularly intense steaming.

My only criticism is the weight distribution - the large head holds the majority of the weight, so although this clothes steamer is actually lighter than the Beldray above, it feels heavier. As someone with weak wrists, I can imagine tiring during longer loads of washing. But for a budget option, that’s me nitpicking.

12. Fridja F1500 High Pressure Clothes Steamer

£189.99, Amazon

Best upright clothes steamer

We like: how powerful the steam is

We don’t like: it takes a while to heat up

Fridja F1500 High Pressure Clothes Steamer best clothes steamer 2024

  • 3.3l water tank

To put the power of this steamer into context, I tested it in the office and had to ask security to switch the smoke alarm off, to avoid a full office evacuation. It uses 2200 Watts, which is almost double that of most other clothes steamers we tried, and five bars of pressure.

The Fridja F1500 is an upright clothes steamer, also known as a standing steamer, vertical steamer or freestanding steamer. To use them, you hang your clothes on the hanger at the top, fill up the water tank at the bottom and steam away. Upright steamers are expensive, but are a worthwhile investment for anyone who has a penchant for materials like linen, silk and cashmere which need de-wrinkling but are too delicate for an iron.

This Fridja F1500 is about the best you’ll find. It’s the most powerful steamer I have tried, by far, but it is easy to use and doesn’t spit. Where handheld steamers can struggle to remove deep creases, the five bars of pressure in this Fridja eradicated them within seconds. I find linen to be the stubbornest of materials, but this steamer didn’t struggle at all, even with thicker trousers. It ironed out a crumpled shirt in just over a minute.

This steamer is a great option for anyone who hates ironing but has a high maintenance wardrobe. It takes all the fuss out of ironing and actually makes it almost, dare I say, fun?

Clothes steamer FAQ

What type of clothes steamers are there.

The two main types of clothes steamers are handheld and upright. Which one you choose depends on your lifestyle. Handheld steamers are more convenient but with smaller water tanks, while upright steamers are better for larger loads and are generally more effective.

“If you’re someone who likes to get all of your ironing or steaming done in one go then an upright steamer with a larger water tank is definitely the best option,” says fashion stylist Emma Lightbown. “If you prefer to steam individual pieces before you wear them or are looking for something easy to travel with then I would recommend a handheld.”

What should you look for in a clothes steamer?

Lightbown recommends finding a steamer with a water tank large enough for your average load to avoid refilling too often. She also says, “Look for steamers that are instant steam rather than those that leave you waiting around while they heat up the whole tank.”

How do clothes steamers work?

“Steamers work by heating up the water in the tank and channeling it to the head where the steam in released in a constant flow to get read of creases,” says Lightbown. She adds that while steamers are great for clothes, they’re also useful for other fabrics like curtains and bedding. Steamers can also be used to freshen up clothes which is especially useful for clothes than can only be dry cleaned.

How do you use a steamer for clothes?

“Using a steamer is really simple, fill the tank with water, wait for the steam to start flowing, hang your garment and then move the steamer across the fabric to get rid of the creases. You don’t need to press the steamer against the fabric. For delicate fabrics it’s best to hold it a few inches away. Steam them inside out to avoid damaging any of the details,” says Lightbown.

Retail expert Carmen Lopez adds, “It is best to steam your items from top to bottom, holding the steamer a few inches away from the fabric in each area of your garment until you see the wrinkles disappear. Gently shake the fabric out from time to time to help relax the fibres.”

Lightbown recommends using an iron for denser fabrics like denim and heavyweight cottons, but steams everything else. She especially likes steaming delicate fabrics which can be damaged by an iron, like silk, chiffon, satin and faux leather.

What others say about Handheld Steamer 3000 Series

Frequently asked questions.

A garment steamer is not an iron, so it won’t give you the same results especially on thick cotton or linen shirts.  Instead, a garment steamer is ideal for de-wrinkling thin fabrics, delicate fabrics and garments with difficult designs, such as pleated skirts.  It is also great for touching up and refreshing all kinds of garments, including woolens and jackets. That said, if you want to live life ironing-board free, you’ll be sure to get good results by just using your new Handheld Steamer 3000 Series.

Yes, your Handheld Steamer 3000 Series is safe and suitable for use on all ironable garments. There’s no risk of scorching or burning.

Using the right type of water will help prolong the life of your Handheld Steamer 3000 Series. Here are some tips and tricks:

Both are designed to be used with tap water. If you live in an area with hard water, though, limescale may build up quickly

If this is the case, try using distilled or demineralised water (50% demineralised water mixed with tap water can be used too).

Do not use perfumed water, water from the tumble dryer, vinegar, starch, descaling agents, ironing aids, chemically descaled water or other chemicals. Not only are they unsafe but they may also cause water spitting, brown staining or damage to your steamer or iron.

To fragrance your clothes, instead try:

• Using perfumed washing softener in your wash

• Using essential oils (aromas) during washing

• Spritzing your garment with perfumed water after ironing or steaming

Using your Handheld Steamer 3000 Series does not replace a full washing cycle but can help extend the time between washes by refreshing your clothes in between. This is good for the life of your clothes as well as for the environmen.

There are other benefits too. Steaming with a Handheld Steamer 3000 Series removes odours and kills 99.9% of bacteria, leaving clothes fresh, healthy and ready to wear.

To de-wrinkle your clothes effectively, hold the plate of your Handheld Steamer 3000 Series against your clothes. Don’t worry about this damaging your garments. The hot plate is specially designed for this. It will not burn or leave wet spots and can be pressed directly against any item of clothing that needs steaming.

Best clothes steamer: At a glance

The best clothes steamers you can buy in 2024, 1. philips steam & go plus: best all-round clothes steamer.

Price when reviewed: £75 | Check price at John Lewis

philips travel clothes steamer

Great for… straightening out clothes that are awkward to iron Not so great for… freshening up curtains and bedsheets

Philips’ handheld steamer is at the more pricey end of the clothes steamers we looked at for this roundup, but we think it’s worth the price. When it comes to sheer performance and efficiency, this corded steamer is the best we found.

The Steam & Go Plus has powerful steam jets that get the job done quickly and efficiently, without dripping or leaving your clothes damp. Unlike many handheld clothes steamers, this nifty device works when held in a horizontal position as well as vertically, so you can use it to de-crease awkward spots or delicate fabrics when ironing – and smooth out your bed sheets after you’ve put them on.

This steamer also excels at removing odour and bacteria from clothes, so it’s brilliant for freshening up a suit or dress you’ve worn once and don’t want to dry-clean. There’s also a brush attachment that’s great for getting steam into thick fabrics, and can even help to remove some pet hair. The main downside is its small 70ml water tank, which can only steam one garment at a time.

Key specs – Type: Handheld; Weight : 950g; Tank capacity: 70ml; Heat-up time: 45secs; Continuous steam: Yes

2. Swan Handheld Garment Steamer: Best-value clothes steamer

Price when reviewed: £24 | Check price at Amazon

philips travel clothes steamer

Great for… cleaning your house as well as your clothes Not so great for… travelling, thanks to its power cable and heavy weight

Swan’s device is the cheapest handheld steamer in our test. At £30 when not discounted, it has an average price of £23 thanks to Amazon’s almost constant sales.

Value for money isn’t the only factor that impresses us, though. Swan’s steamer is a delight to use. The swivelling cable and curvy ergonomic design make it easy to reach every crease in your wardrobe without having to get all the clothes out. It works vertically or horizontally, so you can use its flat plate like an iron or hold it upright to de-crease and freshen clothes with the steam. There’s also a fabric brush attachment, which pet owners will find useful for de-furring coats and curtains.

The device works very well as a steam cleaner for windows, splashbacks and tiles, too. The water tank is on the small side (250ml, enough for a couple of shirts), but you can detach it for easy refilling. A great price for a versatile steamer.

Key specs – Type: Handheld; Dimensions: 13.5 x 9.5 x 27cm (WDH); Tank capacity: 250ml; Heat-up time: 3mins; Continuous steam: Yes

3. breville elite temp clothes steamer: best handheld clothes steamer for linen and tough creases.

Price when reviewed: £60 | Check price at Amazon

Image of the Breville Elite Temp Clothes Steamer

Great for… smoothing your summer linen outfits Not so great for… a wardrobe consisting entirely of delicate T-shirts

This powerful 1500W handheld steamer from Breville struck us as the most elegant device in our rundown, but there’s more to it than good looks. It heats up in just 35 seconds and can deliver steam hot enough to tackle even those fabrics that laugh in the face of an ironing board, such as crinkly linen. And just so you don’t obliterate your more delicate threads, the steamer has two other less powerful steam settings to choose from.

Another factor that impressed us about this steamer is its durable ceramic soleplate, which you can use as an iron. It’s built to withstand repeated use on buttons, zips and other features that may scratch less robust surfaces.

Key specs – Type: Handheld; Dimensions: 167 x 250 x 334mm (WDH); Tank capacity: 240ml; Heat-up time: 35secs; Continuous steam: Yes

4. tefal pure pop: best handheld clothes steamer for travel.

Price when reviewed: £50 | Check price at Amazon

Image of the Tefal Pure Pop clothes steamer

Great for… taking up very little space in your suitcase Not so great for… tackling a big pile of clothes

The dinky Tefal Pure Pop is built to fit in your suitcase and quickly de-crease your clothes while you’re on holiday – it even has its own travel pouch. The device packs a punch for its size, heating up in just 15 seconds and pumping out 20g of steam a minute. We love the clever reversible pad with two sides: a velvet side to avoid burns when you’re steaming delicate fabrics and a lint removal side that efficiently sweeps off any pet hair that made the journey with you.

The Pop’s slim design does mean sacrifices have had to be made with the size of the water tank, which at 70ml is by far the smallest in our roundup and has to be refilled frequently. That aside, we loved this little steamer, especially the sunshine yellow version that makes it easy to find in even the most packed suitcase.

Key specs – Type Handheld; Weight 1kg; Dimensions ‎141 x 570 x 318 mm; Tank capacity 70ml; Heat-up time 15 secs; Continuous steam Yes

5. fridja f1000 professional vertical steamer: best-value upright clothes steamer.

Price when reviewed: £90 | Check price at Amazon

philips travel clothes steamer

Great for… freshening and de-creasing clothes you want to wear again tomorrow Not so great for… smoothing heavy fabrics such as jeans

If you have a wardrobe full of shirts, dresses and jackets but hate getting the ironing board out, then this vertical steamer could make your life much easier. It heats cold water to steam level in just 35 seconds but will allow you to continuously steam clothes on the hanger for over an hour. It also comes with various extras including a heat-protecting glove, trouser attachment and upholstery brush.

We’re less impressed by the maximum 1500W power of this steamer, though, which is no more than some of the handheld steamers we’ve featured here. If you hate ironing but always want your work shirts to look like they’ve just come back from the dry cleaner, this steamer won’t do that for you. However, it’s ideal for keeping light clothes such as casual shirts and dresses smooth and fresh, and at under £100 it’s a very good buy.

Key specs – Type: Upright; Dimensions: 32 x 25 x 80cm (WDH); Tank capacity: 2.2l; Heat-up time: 35secs; Continuous steam: Yes

6. tefal ixeo power qt2020: best all-in-one clothes steamer, iron and board.

Price when reviewed: £300 | Check price at Amazon

best clothes steamer Tefal IXEO on a white background

Great for… tackling a large weekly pile of shirts, jackets and school uniforms Not so great for… quickly de-creasing clothes in the wardrobe

At well over £300 when it’s not discounted, this is not a purchase to be taken lightly. But an endless pile of family laundry isn’t to be taken lightly either, and this amazing all-in-one device from Tefal makes much easier and quicker work of straightening out clothes than a standard iron and board. [remove final sentence]

The whole unit takes up only a little more space than a standard board and iron, but the iron itself is much lighter, so it’s really easy to manoeuvre. Its steam function is more powerful than on a standard steam iron, so you hardly feel you’re ironing at all, even when tackling stubborn creases. It sanitises your clothes, bedsheets and furnishings as well as smoothing your clothes, with the maker claiming the 200g/min maximum steam boost kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria. It’s relatively simple to assemble and very easy to use, despite its plethora of functions, including an anti-scale system, continuous steam options and vertical pressing.

Key specs – Type: Iron and upright steamer; Weight: 4kg; Dimensions: 40 x 40 x 168cm (WDH); Tank capacity: 1.1l; Heat-up time: 70secs; Continuous steam: Yes

7. pro breeze garment steamer: best handheld garment steamer for home furnishings.

Price when reviewed: £25 | Check price at Amazon

philips travel clothes steamer

Great for… spring cleaning curtains and delicate fabrics Not so great for… getting stubborn creases out of shirts and linens

The Pro Breeze Garment Steamer only works in a vertical position, which immediately puts it at a disadvantage compared with the other handheld steamers we looked at. However, its nozzle design makes it ideal for steaming all kinds of fabric around your house, including curtains, bedding and furnishings.

Its steam jets aren’t quite as powerful as the Philips or Breville handheld steamers, and we think the device looks a bit like a budget kettle (it does double as a travel kettle, to be fair). But the steam is emitted very evenly, making it a great choice for steaming beaded, pleated and sequined clothes, which flat iron-style steamers are less adept at tackling.

Key specs – Type: Handheld; Weight : 780g; Dimensions: 8.5 x 15 x 21cm (WDH); Tank capacity : 200ml; Heat-up time: 50secs; Continuous steam : Yes

How to choose the best clothes steamer for you

What type of clothes steamer is right for me.

Each of the main types of garment steamer has clear pros and cons.

Handheld garment steamers are inevitably smaller, lighter and more portable than upright models. They also tend to be cheaper, although powerful feature-packed hand steamers can cost more than £100. Most hand steamers weigh in at around 1kg before you fill them with water, but remember that a large water tank (1 litre or more) will weigh them down and can make them drip. On the other hand, a large water tank may have multiple benefits – one of our recommendations even doubles as a travel kettle.

Upright garment steamers often have posts on which to hang your clothes, or built-in “ironing” boards for steaming against a flat surface – without the risk of the burning and scorching that you get with an iron. Many upright steamers also have a built-in hanger for skirts and jackets while they de-crease and freshen up. Standalone steamers have bigger water tanks and generally come with advanced functions such as multiple steam levels and auto switch-off. But they do cost more and you can’t stick them in your luggage for weddings, work trips and other journeys where a handheld steamer could come in very handy indeed.

What other features should I look for in a garment steamer?

A light weight and portability are vital in a handheld steamer, especially if you’re hoping to stick it in your luggage. Most handheld clothes steamers are lighter than irons.

Continuous steam means the unit emits steam for several seconds at once, often up to 15 seconds in a handheld steamer, so you don’t have to keep pressing the button.

Variable steam settings let you take a gentler approach with delicate fabrics and pack more power with hard-to-iron fabrics such as linen and denim, or when steaming upholstery, bedding and curtains.

What Are the Best Travel Steamers?

To help you find a durable travel steamer for clothing, ShopBillboard did the digging and rounded up some of the top-rated and bestselling picks below. Keep reading to shop the travel essential.

Conair Handheld Garment Steamer for Clothes

Conair’s travel steamer is a luxurious pick that not only can steam your clothes, but was built to handle delicate garments like suits, too. More than 20,000 of them have been purchased in the last month on Amazon, according to the retailer. It also comes with adjustable settings, including the ability to control how intense you want the steam to be, and a built-in reservoir within the handle to reduce its size.

Alaparte Travel Steamer

Alaparte’s travel steamer is the ultimate tool to have handy as it can transform from a steamer to a mini iron. The heated plate is safe to use on fabrics including silk, plush, wool, cotton, linen, polyester and brocade, and aims to maintain a temperature of 302 degrees. Plus, the cord measures six-feet long, allowing you to move around more unrestricted.

Jack Rose Dual Voltage Travel Steamer

If you’re traveling abroad, this dual voltage travel steamer is compatible with 100-220 voltage — just make sure you have a travel adapter , so it fits in the right plugs. Another notable feature is the rotatable head that’ll allow you to cover more surface. You can also use the buttons on the handle to adjust the temperature quickly.

Nexdoo G6 Steamer

Avoid bulky luggage with the Nexdoo G6 Steamer . It weighs less than one pound and features a simple and minimalist design. Once turned on, it can produce continuous steam for up to 12 minutes, allowing you to smooth your outfit with minimal interruption.

SALAV HS-15 Quicksteam Travel Steamer

Target’s portable steamer comes with a customizable head that can go from a flat iron-like surface to a brush that’ll steam away wrinkles and pick up lint. The device also aims to start producing steam in as little as 10 seconds to help you smooth your clothing in a flash.

Does TSA Allow Steamers?

Yes, you can bring a steamer through TSA as long as there is no water inside of it. Liquids have a quantity limit, and draining the water tank or reservoir will help you avoid any issues going through security. You can also confirm on the official TSA website here .

The best clothes steamers to invest in, according to our expert homes tester

For fresh, crease-free 'fits.

best clothes steamers

If garment steamers sound too good to be true, it actually gets better. The higher temperature of steam has the benefit of killing the bacteria that causes odours, leaving garments fresher between laundry loads. Plus, it's safe to use on delicate fabrics without the risk of scorching.

You'll find our detailed reviews of the market leaders below, plus deals ahead of Amazon Prime Day, but these are the steamers that came out on top in our tests:

Russell Hobbs Steam Genie Aroma 28040 Garment Steamer

Best for travelling

Russell hobbs steam genie aroma 28040 garment steamer, is a clothes steamer better than an iron.

A garment steamer has many benefits over a traditional iron. As they don't require an ironing board, they take up less space to store and use , while compact handheld steamers can even be packed in your suitcase when travelling.

The best clothes steamers tend to be much more versatile too, offering power settings to suit different materials – even fragile fabrics such as silk and viscose. In contrast, an iron's metal plate risks burning, sticking and damaging your delicates.

They can also tackle upholstery and soft furnishings with ease – for example, you can give your drapes a refresh without having to take them down. For this reason, a garment steamer is a great tool to have around the house.

Plus, you can steam your clothes on hangers – there's no need to manoeuvre the fabric to reach every pleat and crease, saving time and effort. In fact, a steamer requires very little skill to achieve crease-free results, while ironing can (as we know!) take time and patience to master.

What to look for in a garment steamer

Not sure where to start when it comes to selecting the right garment steamer for you? These criteria are worth considering.

Upright garment steamer vs handheld garment steamer

First, consider the volume of clothes you plan to steam; for a larger household or if you tend to tackle your load in one go, an upright steamer with a larger water tank and higher wattage is best, allowing you to steam continuously without refilling the tank. However, these models often come with a higher price tag, require more storage space, and aren’t suitable for travel.

In contrast, if you plan to use your steamer for fewer garments or want something compact enough for your suitcase, then a smaller, handheld steamer is the way to go.

Our tested steamers range from £24.99 to £109. Once you've determined your budget, you can quickly find the best model with all the functionality for your needs.

Features and attachments

Most fabric steamers offer a range of heat settings, allowing you to modify the power for different fabrics, from delicate silks to sturdier polycottons.

Take note of the attachments included, too. Brushes, lint pads and protective gloves all boost the versatility of your steamer, while heatproof storage bags and foldable hangers are a bonus for travel-ready handhelds.

How we test clothes steamers

Covering both handheld and upright steamers from the leading brands, our expert tester timed how long each model took to reach temperature, before assessing its performance on a range of wardrobe staples.

Each steamer was scored according to its ability to remove creases quickly and effectively, with additional points given for ease of use, manoeuvrability, controls, design and additional attachments.

This small but mighty 4-in-1 system has just about every requirement covered, with a powerful steam output and additional magnetic pads to tackle lint removal, sanitise fabric and fragrance it too.

Thanks to the larger head, the steamer made quick work of removing creases from viscose, linen and silk, though more intricate pieces (such as shirt collars and sleeves) and heavier materials such as cotton may require a second sweep.

The machine was reassuringly spit-free, leaving every garment ready to wear without the risk of watermarking. Despite the number of included accessories, it’s sleek and compact to store or take travelling, making it our top box-ticking pick.

Key specifications

If you’re on the hunt for a handheld steamer that doesn’t need topping up every three minutes, then this Fridja number may be the crinkle-free solution for you. Not only did it heat up in an oh-so casual 41 seconds, it also has a 260ml water tank – that’s over double the size of some of the other handheld models we tested.

And the creases? It removed them with minimal faff from linen, silk, viscose and polycotton. We wouldn’t hate it if the power cable was a little bit longer, but given its expert performance, we’re in a forgiving mood. Plus, it’s quite the looker – it also comes in pink or white to suit your taste and space.

The Fridja F100 offers all the power of a full-size upright garment steamer, with a compact footprint and a range of accessories to boot. Despite the 2.2L water tank, the model was extremely quick to heat and made equally quick work of removing creases from linen, silk and a polycotton shirt.

In fact, our tester declared the results were 'as crisp as an iron could achieve, in the fraction of the time.' The only drawback was the lack of an indicator light, which made monitoring when the machine was ready more difficult.

Philips Steam & Go Plus GC362 Compact Garment Steamer

Taking just 29 seconds to heat up, the Philips Steam&Go Plus performed well on all fabrics, removing creases from silk, cotton and polycotton with ease – and leaving all items 'totally dry' post steam.

The wide head makes covering a larger surface area a breeze and, while the tank capacity is smaller than most (70ml), it didn’t run out of water throughout the duration of the test.

The trigger switch isn’t lockable, meaning you’ll have to keep it held down during steaming, but as it's lightweight, this is relatively comfortable to do. There’s only one additional fabric brush included, but if you’re looking for a stripped-back model to steam all fabrics effectively, this is hard to beat.

With its quick heat-up time, easy-read clear water tank and comfortable trigger lock for continuous steaming, this clothes steamer couldn’t be simpler to use.

The results spoke for themselves, with our tester finding that creases in linen, polycotton and delicates were removed 'with ease', though heavier, hard-to-remove creases in cotton may require more thorough treatment.

The device can feel a little heavy after a while, so it's best suited to individual use, rather than larger loads. At that price though, it’s hard to fault.

This budget-friendly buy offers plenty of versatility, including two steam settings, an LED display to control steam output, and vertical steaming capabilities. Our expert also appreciated the brush attachment, which made treating finer fabrics a breeze, while the trigger lock ensures comfort – even for longer periods and larger loads.

Despite taking just 30 seconds to heat up, heavier fabrics took multiple sweeps to be 100 per cent crease-free, which left the garment slightly damp in places. With that in mind, this model is best suited to those looking to steam their wardrobe in advance of wear, rather than for quick touch-ups before heading out the door.

Lightweight and compact, this handheld garment steamer is ideal for travelling without jeopardising your packing allowance. The handy 360° swivel cord offers improved manoeuvrability, while the additional scent infuser, lint brush, and upholstery attachment boosts its performance (and makes it safe to use on items with decorative details, such as beads or sequins). We found it performed particularly well on viscose and silk, though more resistant materials – including linen, cotton, and polycotton – required multiple sweeps, especially if the garment is heavily creased.

The water tank is quick to refill, fit and heat, though do be aware that the device needs to be shut down between each refill, which may not suit the time-short traveller looking to steam the entirety of their suitcase.

how to prevent wrinkled clothes

7 ways to prevent wrinkled clothes

Save on ironing time with these tips!

Few of us enjoy ironing. In fact, in a recent survey to celebrate 100 years of the GHI, ironing was voted one of the most unpopular of chores ever. Were you to give GH readers a magic wand, 16% would use it to complete the ironing with a flick of the wrist!

Because of this, we’re always looking for ways to reduce wrinkles in our laundry . That way, the ironing can be skipped altogether, or at least speeded up! We’ve found 7 ways to prevent creased laundry to save you time and effort – follow as many as you can to get the best results.

1. Consider the material

Taking it back to basics, consider if the fabrics you’re buying are liable to crease. If you truly hate ironing, this can save you from the chore altogether.

For instance, cotton, linen and delicates will crease much more quickly and more obviously compared to a synthetic blend. And something with lots of layers or detail is only going to make ironing all the more time consuming. Wool and knitwear don’t tend to crease as much, thanks to their heavy-weight structure.

When buying new clothes, always check the care label to confirm the washing directions and the material composition. This can reveal how easy the item will be to maintain.

2. Don’t overload washing machine or dryer

While you might want to get the best value out each wash, overloading your washing machine is a bad idea. Not only does it encourage creases, it impacts the performance of the machine. Detergent can’t reach every item so easily, the load can’t agitate so effectively, and everything is damper than it should be at the end, which slows the drying process.

Overfilling the dryer prompts creases too. If you think about it logically, the more tightly packed items are as they wash and dry, the more creased they’re going to be. Overcrowding the dryer leads to a slower drying process as well, with uneven results. So stick to the recommended capacities for both to avoid excess creases and an impaired performance. For guidance, we recommend filling washing machines to about ¾ full, while dryers should be filled to just over half-full.

3. Use f abric softener

Fabric softener does more than soften your clothes . By removing any static, it helps keep them wrinkle-free too - and has the bonus on top of leaving a pleasant fragrance behind. It works by applying positively charged chemical compounds onto the fabric’s surface which cancel out any negative compounds. Consequently, the item feels softer and appears smoother.

So, by adding fabric softener to your detergent drawer, you’re automatically getting less creased results. Or, you could alternatively spray Lenor’s Crease Release Spray onto a wrinkled item for immediate wrinkle-relief too.

4. Anti-wrinkle cycles

Look out for any settings on your washing machine and tumble dryer that can help keep creases to a minimum. Some washers offer ‘easy iron’ programs; this reduces the spin speed and cycle time to lessen wrinkles and makes the item easier to iron. For other settings, you can always reduce the spin speed manually to achieve the same result, but keep in mind the laundry will naturally be damper the lower you go. Because of this, you won’t want to reduce the spin if you’re moving the item immediately to the dryer. Other washing machines feature steam settings to help relax the fibres and release creases during the cycle.

Steam technology can be found in tumble dryers too. Again, this aids with crease removal and can help freshen up items. Failing that, look out for dryers which will automatically rotate the drum sporadically at the end of the cycle. This prevents any creases from settling in. The ‘iron dry’ setting will also leave items slightly damp once the program finishes, so removing creases with the iron will be quicker, much like the ‘easy iron’ setting.

5. Spread it out

If you hang your clothes out to air dry, make sure to shake out each item beforehand. This opens up the fibres and prevents static, softening them. Then spread the item out as much as possible on the line or drying rack. This eases out any wrinkles which may have formed in the wash and helps it dry smooth. Do not bunch up or overlap garments as this will slow the drying process and create wrinkles.

If you’re using pegs, opt for those with a soft grip, such as these Culiclean Clothes Pegs . These are less likely to leave marks where they’re clipped. And when hanging shirts, jumpers and jeans, invert them so you peg from the bottom hems. For jeans, the weight of the upper section will help stretch out any creases, while for jumpers, this avoids any stretching or marks on the shoulders.

6. Dryer balls

Dryer balls can help separate your laundry as they bounce around in the tumble dryer, speeding up the drying process by providing better air circulation. As they make contact with items and agitate the load, they can also help soften it and prevent creases and static . This is because with the load being better separated, there’s less friction between items and so less opportunity for wrinkles to form.

Dryer balls are predominantly available in wool or rubber. We recommend the Boss It Rapid Dryer Ball ; with a reflective surface, it’s designed to better distribute the heat as it bounces around.

7. Take advantage of the shower

It’s an old method, but it works! Hanging creased items in the bathroom while you shower can really help get rid of any lingering creases. Much as it is with the best clothes steamers , steam will relax the fibres of the item and help restore it to a smoother state.

The GHI's top 5 steam generator irons

Philips PerfectCare Elite Plus GC9682/86

Philips PerfectCare Elite Plus GC9682/86

Score: 95/100

This all-star steam generator was powerful and consistent, demonstrating impressive tank longevity as it glided over our clothes on test. Its temperature adjusts to suit the fabric you’re ironing, and it doesn’t spit, making it an ideal buy if your ironing pile is often stacked high.

Morphy Richards Speed SteamPro 1.6L Steam Generator 332102

Morphy Richards Speed SteamPro 1.6L Steam Generator 332102

Score: 89/100

At over half the price of our winner, this is certainly a more value buy, but it’s still impressive all the same. Our testers rated its drip-free yet consistent steam function and reliable crease-removal skills. It wasn’t the fastest to heat up, but otherwise, it’s a trusty buy.

Philips PerfectCare 6000 Series Steam Generator Iron PSG6064/86

Philips PerfectCare 6000 Series Steam Generator Iron PSG6064/86

Score: 88/100

This is another model that adapts its temp to your clothes, meaning it’s ideal for tackling delicate fabrics as it shouldn’t get too hot. On test, it removed creases well across the board, and its water tank is easy to refill. Again, it’s not the speediest to get started but once warmed, it’s a top performer.

Polti Vaporella VS20.20

Polti Vaporella VS20.20

Score: 85/100

With clear labels and an intuitive design, this is simple to use from the moment you un-box it. It’s quick too, especially on cotton and linen, clearing even the most stubborn creases and leaving one linen trouser leg pristine after just 35 seconds. The water tank is a bit fiddly to remove though, but this aside, it feels like a premium buy.

Morphy Richards Power SteamElite 332014

Morphy Richards Power SteamElite 332014

Score: 84/100

Avoid frequent tank top-ups with this Morphy Richards that houses over two litres of water at once. Refilling it is easy too, and it had a consistent steam output on test, although it dripped a tad on lower settings. Overall, it’s a speedy worker, banishing creases in under 30 seconds.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
