”I fly from St Petersburg to Moscow to play padel”

one padel tour

One player flies from St Petersburg to Moscow to play padel. Another  is ranked as number 24 in the Spanish region Catalonia.  There is currently only one padel club and 20 courts in the whole of Russia. But the Russians believe that the sport will grow in their country as well.

Despite a better team this time, Russia finished in the last place in the European Championships. Except for Norway and Austria, who were eliminated in the qualifying round.

— It was a disaster last time in Rome 2019. We had guys 55 and 60 years old in our national squad, Vladimir Nifontov, from St Petersburg, says to Padel Alto during the European Championship in Marbella.

He lives in St Petersburg, a city that has no padel clubs. To play padel, he flies 700 kilometers from his hometown to the capital, Moscow, to play matches.

— I fly to Moscow to play padel once a week, sometimes I also fly to my friends in Thailand to play. They have a court there, he says.

In Thailand, he discovered padel five years ago and tells he fell in love with the sport from the first moment. The problem was that there was no padel court in the whole of Russia when he went back.

— We have no trainers as well, so you can only play matches, he says.

When Vladimir Nifontov was young, he was a promising talent in tennis and has played matches on the APT tour. Now he has made the journey to play in the European Championship for his country for the second time.

— I quit tennis when I was 20 due to an injury. I was very sad then. Now I am 36. This feels like my rebirth.

After the European Championship, there will be more flying for the Russian player. But not as often to Moscow. Instead, he has decided to spend a lot of time in Spain, training with coaches.

— I have decided to spend ten days every month in Barcelona.

Filip Björne

For him, the successful tennis country with stars like Anna Kournikova, Marija Sjarapova, and Daniil Medvedev has a long way to go in padel.

— Padel is completely unknown. It is in the shadow of tennis. But maybe we will see more padel clubs after covid, Vladimir Nifontov says.

The Russian team contains a mix of players, and the quality is uneven. Two players live, and train in Spain, one in Italy, and the remaining players are scattered around Russia.

Russia's best player is Nicolai Maniucov. He grew up in Spain with Russian parents and is ranked 24th in Catalonia. The matches during the European Championship were played in three games with the team that took two wins winning the overall match. In fact, Nicolai Maniucov and his partner Alex Martynov did not lose a single match.

Both his and his partner's Russian language is not good, and they speak Spanish with each other on the court. They work both as padel trainers in Spain.

— We are lucky that many Russians living abroad. They love to come to Spain, they live half a year in Spain and learn to play padel. Nicolai Maniucov, lives in Girona, he is the number 24th in Catalonia, and Alex Martynov was the number 20 in Murcia. But with Covid, he plays less, and now he is around 30, the national team captain, Christian Tarruella, says.

Tell me more about padel in Russia?

— We found padel in 2014 in Russia. In some places now we have one or two courts in a tennis club. There is only one specific club for padel. I hope this year it´s going to start more clubs.

— There are around 20 courts in the whole of Russia, Christian Tarruella says.

What about the future of the sport?

— I think It´s going to be a padel country. The people in Russia are competitive, and there are a lot of tennis players. The climate is ideal for indoor sports. I think it's going to grow fast.

What will it take for Russia to get there?

— We are like Sweden ten years ago. We need time. There is plenty of space in Russia to build courts, and it will happen when people know the sport.

Christian Tarruela, Nicolai Maniucov and Alexandre Martynov.

Christian Tarruela, Nicolai Maniucov, and Alexandre Martynov. Filip Björne

How do you work to spread the sport so that more people know what the sport is all about?

— We work with news, journals in the media and the internet. We are going to open a lot of sites with information to spread the sport around Russia.

Do you think we are going to see a World Padel Tour tournament in Russia in the future?

— In a couple of years, it is possible with a World Padel Tour tournament in Russia. Actually, in October, the first FIP tournament is going to be held in Russia.

How important will that be?

— Very important. For the people to know more about the sport. That people from other countries come to Russia, and it will be a rise for the padel. I'm sure.

Which player would you prefer to have in the Russian FIP tournament if you could choose freely?

— For me, there are two players. Juan Martin Diaz and Miguel Lamperti. Then, of course, Fernando Belasteguin. He is a genius.

Lamperti was in the FIP Stockholm, for example. Do you think we will see him in Russia in October?

— We will send him a special invitation, Christian Tarruella says.

Tour de France 2024 guide: Talking points, route map and how to watch

Due to the olympic and paralympic games taking place in paris, the 111th edition will not finish in the french capital for the first time.

one padel tour

The 111th edition of the Tour de France gets under way on Saturday with the world’s four best stage racers all vying for the fabled yellow jersey.

Bookended by the race’s first start in Italy and first finish outside Paris, the 2024 Tour de France boasts a groundbreaking route like none other before.

With a record 3,700m of climbing on the opening day and the legendary Col du Galibier as early as day four, the battle for the yellow jersey should be intense from the get-go. And with the race concluding with a tough time trial between Monaco and Nice – as opposed to the usual bunch sprint after a processional plod into Paris – the main contenders will be going head-to-head right up to the last pedal stroke.

Let’s take a closer look as some of the main talking points ahead of the most important bike race of the year.

Pogacar in pole position as fellow favourites falter

For the first time, the so-called “Big Four” general classification riders – Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel – will all be at the start line of a Grand Tour along with the two classics kings, Wout van Aert and the world champion Mathieu van der Poel.

Mark Cavendish boasts the speed and support crew to break Tour de France record

Mark Cavendish boasts the speed and support crew to break Tour de France record

If there’s no doubting the stardust of the start list then one rider currently towers above the rest: the Slovenian showman Pogacar. The two-time Tour winner added the Giro d’Italia to his swelling palmares this May and returns to Italy for the Grand Depart in Florence in the form of his life. His UAE Team Emirates is also arguably the strongest of the lot, with teammate Adam Yates also capable of finishing on the podium.

While Pogacar was winning six stages and securing the Giro’s pink jersey in May, his three main rivals were all recovering from injuries sustained in a single horror crash that marred the Itzulia Basque Country race in April.

The big question now – and one that will shape the dynamic of the next three weeks – is whether double defending champion Vingegaard is competitive enough to take the fight to Pogacar. The Dane suffered multiple broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and a broken collarbone in the incident – and he has not raced since.

Deprived of a host of key team-mates at Visma-Lease a Bike – including the Covid-stricken Vuelta a España winner, Sepp Kuss – Vingegaard starts his fourth Tour on the back foot. It remains to be seen if this will prove more detrimental to his chances than fatigue from the Giro does to Pogacar’s as both riders aim to become the first to win three Tours.

More British riders than ever before

one padel tour

Four-time champion Chris Froome may have been overlooked by his Israel-Premier Tech team, but a record 11 British riders feature on the startlist – more than ever before.

Isle of Man sprinter Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) is the pick of the bunch as the 39-year-old attempts to become the outright leading stage winner of the Tour in his 15th and final appearance.

Twins Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) and Simon Yates (Team Jayco-AlUla) are most likely to make a splash in the general classification, while Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), debutant Stephen Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) and Welsh veteran Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) will be targeting wins on the hillier stages.

I’ve seen the solution to England’s problems. Now let’s pray Southgate has too

I've seen the solution to England's problems. Now let's pray Southgate has too

Bastille day to savour.

Not only does the mythical Col du Galibier come as early as stage four as the riders head over the border from Italy, but also the peloton will tackle 32km of gravel roads in an intriguing ninth stage in north-central France.

But it’s so often the summit finishes that make the Tour so memorable – and this year’s route features five of them for a total of seven days in the high mountains. The pick of the bunch comes on the French national holiday of Bastille Day on 14 July when the riders face the best part of 5,000m of climbing ahead of the second rest day.

Stage 15 is arguably the “queen stage” of the race and features four gruelling Category 1 climbs in the Pyrenees ahead of the brutal ascent to Plateau de Beille, with its series of double-digit pitches and unforgiving gradients devoid of tree cover or hairpin bends.

New kits aplenty – and a new man in white

one padel tour

There will be no fewer than nine teams sporting new kits for the Tour – most notably Visma-Lease a Bike, who have swapped their usual yellow for a slick blue patterned kit echoed on the frames of their Cervelo bikes.

After welcoming Red Bull on board as a new lead sponsor, Roglic’s Bora-Hansgrohe team have also updated their green and yellow colours for a foreboding dark blue kit.

Meanwhile, for the first time since Pogacar made his debut in 2020, a new rider will take the young riders white jersey. Now 25, the Slovenian no longer qualifies for the maillot blanc competition which will open the doors to the likes of Belgian debutant Evenepoel, Spaniards Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), and perhaps even Pidcock.

First ever finish outside Paris

The Paris 2024 Olympics means that for the first time in the Tour’s 121-year history, the race will not finish in the French capital. Since 1975, the final stage of the Tour has become synonymous with sprints on the Champs-Elysees. But not only will the 111th edition finish on the French Riviera, it will do so after a final-day individual time trial between Monaco and Nice.

It will be the first time since 1989 that the Tour has concluded with a race against the clock – and the organisers will be hoping for similar drama to that famous showdown between Greg LeMond and Laurent Fignon, when the American ended up coming from behind to win the Tour by just eight seconds, the smallest margin in the race’s history.

By Alex Schultz · Last updated on May 4, 2024

The capital of Russia is an incredible place to explore. Visitors to Moscow come away spellbound at all the amazing sights, impressed at the sheer size and grandeur of the city. Lying at the heart of Moscow, the Red Square and the Kremlin are just two of the must-see tourist attractions; they are the historical, political and spiritual heart of the city – and indeed Russia itself.

In addition to its plethora of historical and cultural tourist attractions, Moscow is home to world-class museums, theaters and art galleries.

Renowned for its performing arts, fantastic ballets and amazing circus acts, catching a show while in Moscow is a must. The wealth of brilliant restaurants, trendy bars, and lively nightlife means there is something for everyone to enjoy.

17. Tsaritsyno Palace

Tsaritsyno Palace

Once the summer residence of Catherine the Great, the stunning Tsaritsyno Palace is now a museum-reserve. The architecture is magnificent and there is a lovely park surrounding it for visitors to explore.

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

The exhibits on display look at the life of the empress as well as the history of Tsaritsyno itself. The huge palace grounds are also home to some other delightful buildings with the elegant opera house and wonderful brickwork of the Small Palace being particularly impressive to gaze upon.

VDNKh

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. In addition to this there is the fascinating Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics which is dedicated to space exploration and the fun Moskvarium aquarium even offers you the chance to swim with dolphins.

With lots of eateries scattered about and numerous entertainment options such as horse-riding and zip-lining, there is something for everyone to enjoy; the Friendship of Nations fountain truly is wonderful.

15. Kremlin Armoury

Kremlin Armoury

One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

Once the royal armory, there are loads of fascinating objects on display. Perusing the many sabers, jewelry, armor and more is as interesting as it is educational and entertaining and the swords are so finely crafted that you’ll almost wish you could pick up one and wield if yourself.

Established in 1851, the museum is situated in the Moscow Kremlin.

14. GUM Department Store

GUM Department Store

Standing for ‘Main Universal Store’ in Russian, GUM is stunning. Its wonderful skylights and beautiful facades mean it doesn’t look out of place alongside its illustrious neighbors on Red Square.

With over 200 shops, boutiques and upmarket eateries inside, it is a shopaholic’s heaven and concerned partners will be glad to find more affordable options alongside luxury brands such as Dior and Prada.

The main department store in the city, GUM was opened in 1893. The stunning architecture makes it well worth a visit even if shopping isn’t your thing.

13. Moscow Metro

12. Arbat Street

Arbat Street

An elegant yet lively street, Arbat is full of impressive architecture and was once a popular place to live for aristocrats, artists, and academics.

A historic place, it is down Arbat Street that Napoleon’s troops are said to have headed on their way to capture the Kremlin.

Nowadays, there are many cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as various monuments and statues to former residents such as Alexander Pushkin who was reputed to be a lover of the Russian Empress due to his massive influence in court.

11. Novodevichy Convent

Novodevichy Convent

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery

Home to the most extensive and impressive collection of Russian fine art in the world, the State Tretyakov Gallery is definitely worth visiting when in Moscow for the wealth of amazing art pieces that it has on display.

Having started out as the private art collection of the Tretyakov brothers, there are now over 130,000 exhibits. Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

An absolute must for art lovers, the State Tretyakov Gallery will delight visitors with all that is has to offer.

6. Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoye

Once a royal estate, Kolomenskoye is now a museum-reserve and lies a few kilometers outside of the city center. A captivating place to visit, there is a plethora of history on show and the site overlooks the Moskva River.

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

One Week in Russia Itinerary

one padel tour

Deciding where to go in Russia when you only have one week can be a challenge; it is the largest country on earth, after all. For first-timers who want to experience the most iconic  attractions in Russia , it should be a no-brainer: Moscow and St Petersburg.

Russia has always been an intriguing destination and famously described by Winston Churchill as a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma, almost like a matryoshka doll.

The political capital, Moscow, and the cultural capital, Saint Petersburg, are the outer layers (and often the only layers) that visitors to Russia see first. While one week is not nearly enough to visit Russia, a one-week itinerary of Moscow and Saint Petersburg will show you the best of these smashing cities.

This is a guest post by the Museum of Wander blog

Table of Contents

Overview: One-week in Moscow & Saint Petersburg Itinerary

Your one-week trip to Russia can either start in Moscow or Saint Petersburg. Both cities are well connected to the rest of the world by international flights or by trains to the rest of Europe.

This itinerary starts in Moscow and ends in Saint Petersburg, but it can be done in reverse too.

Visitors often find it challenging to decide whether to spend more time in Moscow or St Petersburg when planning their trip to Russia. Both cities are drop-dead gorgeous, so perhaps flip a coin to decide where to stay longer.

History aficionados and those with a fetish for Soviet relics will enjoy Moscow a lot. At the same time, culture vultures will love Saint Petersburg for having among the  best museums in Europe , stunning architecture, and a more European vibe.

Here is an overview of your 7-day Russian itinerary:

Day 1: Moscow: Arrive in Moscow, Moskva River Cruise

Day 2: Moscow: Red Square and Kremlin

Day 3: Moscow: VDNKh Park & Cosmonautic Museum

Day 4: Moscow – Izmailovo Market, Metro Tour, Overnight Train to Saint Petersburg

Day 5: St Petersburg: Petrogradskaya & Canal Cruise

Day 6: St Petersburg: Hermitage Museum & City Centre Walking Tour

Day 7: St Petersburg: Day trip to Peterhof Gardens

How to Travel between Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Numerous flights connect the two cities throughout the day, with a flight duration of under 90 minutes. If you’re in a hurry or love airports, this is the obvious choice for you.

Rail enthusiasts have two options. Sapsan bullet trains take less than four hours to complete the 6oo km journey. Taking travel time to the airport, check-in time, and security checks into account, the Sapsan is an excellent alternative to flying.

Several comfortable night trains also run between Moscow and Saint Petersburg in about 8 hours. This is a very memorable way to travel in Russia, and you will save on one night’s accommodation cost too.

The most popular night train is called the Red Arrow, an overnight service once reserved for big wigs and high-ranking officials of the USSR. Today, the Red arrow is the most comfortable and atmospheric overnight train to take and a top choice for tourists.

7 Days in Russia: Day 1 Moscow

one padel tour

 Moscow has three international airports:

  • Sheremetyevo Airport (SVO)
  • Vnukovo Airport (VKO)
  • Domodedovo Airport (DME)

All three airports conveniently connect to Moscow by Aeroexpress trains, public buses, and taxis. Consider arranging a private transfer, especially if arriving from a long international flight.

Where to stay in Moscow

A good place to stay during your time in Moscow is the Tverskaya area. The location allows you to walk to the Red Square, Kremlin, and the Bolshoy Theatre. You’ll also find excellent restaurants, cafes, and supermarkets in the vicinity. The acclaimed Cafe Pushkin is not to be missed.

After settling into your accommodation, stroll around Tverskaya and familiarise yourself with the area.

Moskva River Cruise

Before sunset, make your way to Patriarchiy Pier (Kropotkinskaya Metro Station) to board a sightseeing cruise along the Moskva River. This is the best and most relaxing way to get a preview of the sights and famous landmarks that you’ll explore over the next few days.

Day 2: Moscow – Kremlin & Red Square

one padel tour

The Kremlin and Red Square must be at the top of every visitor’s list of  things to do in Moscow . If you see only one place in Moscow, make it the Kremlin and adjacent Red Square.

The Kremlin is the political, cultural, and religious heart of Russia. This walled fortress is home to Vladimir Putin, the Russian Federation’s president, and has five palaces, four cathedrals, and several museums.

After entering the Kremlin Walls, make your way to Cathedral Square. Along the way, you’ll pass the famous Tsar Cannon and Tsar Bell, renowned for their size.

The architecture in Cathedral Square is outstanding. Here you can see the most beautiful churches and cathedrals in Moscow. Dating from the Middle Ages, these buildings are what sightseeing dreams in Russia are made of gilded onion domes, crystal chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling frescoes.

After taking in all that Russian Orthodox splendors, also visit the Armoury and Diamond Fund. Here you can overdose on everything that shines and glitters, from crown jewels to Faberge eggs and the world’s largest diamond.

Exit the Kremlin and continue to the Red Square.

Tip:  There are a few excellent and affordable Russian and Central Asian restaurants on the 3rd floor of the GUM Department Store where you can go for lunch.

Red Square:

In Red Square, you can visit the most iconic landmarks in the city, if not all of Russia. The most recognizable is the colorful St Basil’s cathedral.

The striking, red building on the opposite side of the enormous square is the State Historical Museum, the country’s largest and most famous history museum.

The modest, pyramid-like structure on the side of the square next to the Kremlin wall is Lenin’s Mausoleum. Line up with the thousands of Russians to see Lenin’s embalmed corpse for a truly …chilling experience.

You can easily spend a whole day at the Kremlin and Red Square. If you still have energy left, the area surrounding Red Square is perfect for simply strolling around aimlessly and taking in all the stunning cityscapes.

Day 3: VDNKh Park & Museum of Cosmonautics

one padel tour

Set aside your second day in Moscow to explore the city’s Soviet attractions.

The best place to bask in the glory days of the good ol’ USSR is to head to the VDNKh Park. This large park was built in the 1930s to showcase the successes and glories of the Soviet Union.

A pavilion for each Soviet Republic, from Tajikistan to Ukraine and every other republic in between, are scattered throughout the park. (You can try some good Armenian wine and brandy at the Armenian pavilion). Each pavilion showcases the culture, agriculture, and economic achievements of the country in true Soviet style.

The park is also an excellent place for a picnic, so bring some food or buy some from the vendors, join the local families and lovers, and enjoy the outdoors.

Cosmonautics Museums

Nearby, the Cosmonautics Museums commemorates Russian space exploration. The tall, silver monument pointing to the sky can be seen far away, so it’s easy to find.

The excellent museum at the base has thousands of space-related memorabilia, from original spacesuits to the Lunokhod moon rover and other interactive displays.

Day 4: Izmailovo Market, Metro Tour & On to Saint Petersburg

Izmailovo Market:

On your last day in Moscow, head out into the suburbs to the Izmailovo Market to shop for that perfect Russian souvenir.

This sprawling market is held throughout the week but is really good on weekends when Moscovites come to sell their unwanted treasures at the flea market. Whether you’re looking for a matryoshka doll, a carpet from Dagestan, vodka, silver or crystal from Siberia, or perhaps a Soviet propaganda poster, you’ll find it at this market.

Moscow Metro Tour

One thing you must absolutely not miss is a tour of the extravagant stations of the Moscow Metro. With mosaics, bronze statues, chandeliers, and marble fittings, it’s easy to see why it’s also called the  Palaces of the People .

Going on a small group tour is very convenient, but if you can at least read Cyrillic, it’s also rewarding to do it yourself. Among the best stations to visit are Arbatskaya, Kievskaya, and Ploschad Revolutsii.

At night, say goodbye to Moscow and board your overnight train to Saint Petersburg.

Day 5: Saint Petersburg: Arrival, Petrogradskaya & Canal Cruise

one padel tour

Where to stay in Saint Petersburg:

Petrogradskaya is a fantastic neighborhood to base yourself in when visiting Saint Petersburg. Located just across the Neva River from the Hermitage, Petrogradskaya is less touristy and offers better value, yet Palace Square is just one metro stop away.

Unique attractions in Petrogradskaya like the Central Asian-looking Saint Petersburg Mosque and Sytni farmer’s market are also well worth seeing.

After arriving at your accommodation and freshening up, it’s always a good idea to explore the immediate area on foot to orientate yourself. Even if not staying in a self-catering apartment, definitely go to the fantastic Sytni market to stock op on fresh produce, caviar, honey, and baked goods for breakfast.

Peter & Paul Fortress

The most famous attraction on the Petrograd side of the city is the Peter and Paul fortress. After visiting the citadel and cathedral, stroll down to the Neva River beaches, which are popular in summer. From here, you get to see one of the best views in Saint Petersburg with the Hermitage and cathedral domes on the opposite side of the river.

Canal Cruise:

Cross the Neva to the Admiralteyskaya Embankment to board a boat for a canal cruise. Also called the Venice of North, a canal cruise of Saint Peterburg is an unmissable experience. Make sure to take a cruise that will also take you down the smaller canals, such as the Kryukov and Winter Canals.

Day 6: Saint Petersburg: Hermitage and City Walking Tour

one padel tour

The Hermitage, housed in Catherine the Great’s Winter Palace, is the highlight of a visit to Saint Petersburg. The building itself is a visual overdose of gold, marble, opulence, and grandeur, all on a scale that only Russia can pull off.

To take it up a notch, they’ve filled that impressive building with some of the most famous pieces of art in the world!

The art collection consists of millions of pieces and seeing it all will take months. A more realistic time frame for the casual visitor is to set aside at least half a day to enjoy the Hermitage. Make sure to visit the General Staff Building across the square too. This is where the Hermitage’s modern art collection is housed, and the entrance fee is included in that of the Hermitage.

Tip:  The Hermitage is the number one attraction in Saint Petersburg, and lines enter get extremely long, especially in summer when cruise ships come in. Buy your entrance tickets online to save you a lot of time and frustration.

one padel tour

City Walking Tour:

When you can’t possibly look at any more Van Goghs or Rembrandts or gold, start your walking tour in Palace Square, in front of the Hermitage. This must be one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.

From here, walk along Nevsky Prospekt (the city’s most famous Street) and admire all the incredible architecture. Soon, you’ll reach the Griboedov Canal, which is perhaps the most beautiful part of Saint Petersburg.

You can visit the city’s best attractions along the canal, such as the Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood, the Kazan Cathedral, and the Singer Building.

Back towards the Neva River, look out for the towering golden dome of St Isaac’s cathedral. This is the world’s largest Orthodox church, and it’s quite a sight to see. Even if you think that you’ve seen enough gold and art for one day, the interior of St Isaac’s will blow you away. Also, take the steps up to the roof for a sweeping view across Saint Petersburg.

From here, walk up along the Admiralty Embankment, which will take you back to the Hermitage where you started.

Day 7: Saint Petersburg: Peterhof Gardens

one padel tour

Peterhof Gardens, famous for its over-the-top fountains, is the second most popular attraction after the Hermitage.

When Peter the Great visited Versailles in France, he returned with a vision to create a Russian version, and man, he did quite an excellent job. The palaces, formal gardens, and (yes, you guessed it- GOLDEN) fountains are a sight to behold.

At the center of the fountains, the focus point of the garden is a fountain depicting Samson forcing open the jaws of the lion. This has nothing to do with religion, but in fact, represents Russia’s victory over Sweden.

Tip:  Regular minibusses leave from Avtovo Metro Station in St Petersburg and take about an hour to reach Peterhof. You could also get there by hydrofoil, or for convenience – join a tour.

End of your one week trip to Russia

You could fly home on the last day of the itinerary, but it’s probably better to stay one last night in Saint Petersburg. Have one last meal, one last stroll and have a good night’s sleep and then say your  dasvidaniya  (goodbye) to this incredible country.

One Week Moscow & Saint Petersburg Itinerary: Variations

One week is the ideal length of time for a Moscow and Saint Petersburg itinerary. If you have less time, maybe spend all your time in only one city and really get to know the place, rather than cramming in too much.

With more time, you could consider taking a side trip to the Golden Ring from Moscow, or perhaps continue on to Helsinki or the Baltics at the end from Saint Petersburg.

Regardless of where you go or how long you spend in Russia, the country is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Sharing is caring!

One Day in Moscow Itinerary – What to do in Moscow, Russia

Moscow is an amazing city full of history. Located in western Russia, on the Moskva River, it has been the capital of the country since the 14th century, with a break of 200 years when the capital of Russia was moved to Sankt Petersburg. This impressive place provides its visitors with a glimpse of Russian traditions and ways of living but also boasts many incredible sights. One day in Moscow will therefore be an amazing experience full of things to do an places to see. This is Russian culture and history at its finest!

One day in Moscow Itinerary

Moscow is also one of the most populated cities in the world and the most populated and fastest-growing city in Europe. Visiting it in one day is a challenge , but not impossible. Discover its amazing architecture, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and incredible parks because this is one of the greenest cities in Europe, too.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Moscow?

Moscow is a cold city, and if you want to enjoy it fully while it is sunny, the best time to visit it is during summer. However, summer is the most touristy season , and the prices are very high, but the weather is very nice (from June to August the temperature is about 22° – 24°C).

In Moscow, there is more winter than any other season, so autumn turns cold really fast and the spring comes late. If you want to avoid the crowded season, you can visit the city from April to May and during the fall month of September, when the temperatures are more bearable. Winter in Moscow is snowy and incredibly cold, with temperatures of -10°C in December and January. But this is also a part of its charm.

Spending just one day in Moscow is not enough to discover all of its hidden gems, culture, and history, but it is still a great opportunity to meet this fascinating city. Visit and discover the most iconic places in Moscow and don’t forget to take a lot of pictures.

Start with a Breakfast at Coffeemania (Kofemaniya Moss)

There are two Coffeemanias in Moscow, one that is in a mall, and this one which is at 1.8 km from the Red Square, just 20 minutes away.

Admire the Red Square

The Red Square has been an important and iconic place for Moscow since 1400. It became popular and famous after all the military parades, demonstrations, and events that took place here. It is definitely one of the places you should not miss when in Moscow, even if you have just one day here. The Red Square is also incredibly beautiful, as evidenced by its Russian name – the Red Square translates to Krasnaya Ploshchad in Russian, Krasnaya meaning beautiful in old Russian.

Borodino – if you want to visit the place where Napoleon was defeated by the Russian army , then a two-hour day trip from Moscow to Borodino is what you are looking for. It is not that popular among tourists, so you can enjoy it calmly.

Zvenigorod – if you want to discover the Russian cuisine, then you should head straight to Zvenigorod. Besides the beautiful and impressive monasteries, here you can visit the Museum of Russian Desserts . And the best thing about it is that you can taste them, so it will be a nice gastronomical experience.

Extra Tips for Visiting Moscow

Here are some extra trips you should consider before visiting Moscow .

Always have cash with you because not all shops in Moscow accept credit card payments.
