Disney cruise kids clubs: What to know about the Oceaneer Club

D isney cruise kids clubs are some of the best in the cruise industry. Each of Disney Cruise Line 's ships offer huge play spaces for kids, nurseries for babies and hip hangouts for teens and tweens. Plus, the line can lean into all of the Disney-owned properties and brands to enhance its youth activities; there's theming around Mickey and friends, princesses and other Disney, Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel movie characters and plotlines.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Learn more about Disney's Oceaneer Club and Lab, Edge, Vibe and the It's a Small World Nursery to see just what makes the line's kids clubs so beloved by cruising families.

What are the Disney cruise kids clubs?

Disney Cruise Line has one of the best kids' programs at sea, with age-appropriate hangout and play spaces for babies through older teens.

The Disney cruise kids clubs start with the It's a Small World Nursery for babies and toddlers. Its biggest kids clubs are the Oceaneer Club and Lab, connected spaces for preschool to elementary school age kids. Tweens and teens also have their own lounge spaces, called Edge and Vibe, respectively.

Disney Wish is the first ship in the fleet to offer a dedicated space for the oldest kids. The Hideaway is the Disney cruise kids club for late high school and college-age young adults.

Related: Best cruise ships for kids

What are the age groups for kids clubs on Disney cruises?

The Disney cruise kids club ages affiliated with each space are as follows:

  • It's a Small World Nursery: 6 months to 3 years old
  • Oceaneer Club and Lab: 3 to 10 years old and fully toilet trained
  • Edge: 11 to 14 years old
  • Vibe: 14 to 17 years old
  • The Hideaway: 18 to 20 years old

Note for sailings departing prior to December 21, 2023, the Oceaneer Club is accessible to kids up to age 12, giving middle schoolers the choice between the club and Edge. Based on guest feedback, Disney has made a change to bump 11- and 12-year-olds to Edge, beginning with cruises departing December 21 or after.

Disney Cruise Line makes sure their age group policies fit an array of preferences. You'll notice some overlap in the Disney cruise kids club ages. That's because Disney understands that siblings or travel companions of different ages might want to go to the kids clubs together; it also recognizes that kids at the ends of the age ranges have different maturity levels and interests.

For example, 14-year-olds can choose if they prefer to hang out with younger middle schoolers or older teens, depending on where they feel comfortable. A young 3-year-old might feel more comfortable in the smaller nursery than in the large, choose-your-own-adventure Oceaneer Club.

In addition, parents can sign a permission form allowing mature 10-year-olds to go to Edge and 13-year-olds to go to the teen club Vibe on a Disney cruise. This is especially useful if younger kids want to be in the same group with older friends or family.

How does the kids club on a Disney cruise work?

Parents or other responsible adults should register their kids and teens for the Disney cruise kids club either online pre-cruise or on embarkation day once on board. Kids will receive a wristband (or a special coded cruise card) that enables them to sign in and out of the clubs.

Special activities in each of the clubs will be listed in the daily schedule on the Disney cruise Navigator app. Kids can also choose to participate in the always-available activities at the clubs instead. In the connected Oceaneer Club and Lab, for example, multiple activities will be happening at once, and kids can choose what interests them. Youth counselors will assist the littlest cruisers in finding a suitable activity. Reservations are not necessary.

Parents must sign their children in and out of the Disney kids club until they're 8 years old. Parents can choose to give older kids permission to sign themselves in and out. Tweens and teens can come and go from Edge and Vibe as they please.

Children with special needs are allowed at the youth activities and kids clubs. However, they must be toilet trained and able to participate in the activities and interact with other kids in the clubs without special assistance.

Related: The 3 types of Disney Cruise Line ships, explained

What activities are available for kids in the Disney Oceaneer Club and Lab?

On ships with a separate Oceaneer Club and Lab, the Club activities will skew a bit younger and the Lab activities a bit older. Disney Wish and Disney Treasure feature just the Oceaneer Club for all activities. Counselors also invite 3- and 4-year-olds to attend special guided activities.

Activities in the Oceaneer Club might include arts and crafts at Tinkerbell's Pixie Hollow, playtime in Andy's Room with Toy Story-themed play structures or a Star Wars-themed flight simulator game in the Millennium Falcon area. Kids can meet characters, listen to stories, dress up and watch Disney movies. Signature activities include Jedi and Lion Guard training, Woody's roundup with games and stories and Mickey's Roadster Races.

The nautical-themed Oceaneer Lab might include the Animator's Studio for crafts, a media room for movies and video games and the Wheelhouse for interactive video games. Some ships have Magic PlayFloors where you work up a sweat playing virtual games. Fan favorites include carving race cars out of soap in the Piston Cup Challenge, making a mess with Super Sloppy Science and baking chocolate chip cookies.

On Pirate Night, expect pirate-themed activities, perhaps with an appearance from Captain Hook.

What activities are available for tweens and teens in Edge and Vibe on a Disney cruise?

Edge is the tween club, and it offers a mix of structured activities that 11- to 14-year-olds would enjoy, plus time for board games, video games and crafts. The cool hangout space is tricked out with giant TVs, gaming consoles, comfy seating, and tables and chairs that can be commandeered for various activities.

On Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, it's in the ship's forward faux funnel. On Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the room is designed to look like an old ship's boiler room. On Disney Wish, the space is inspired by a New York City loft, complete with a faux grass picnic area.

Scheduled events might include karaoke, improv class, trivia games, foosball or video game challenges, crafts, scavenger hunts, and parties with photo booths and dancing.

The teen club Vibe is even more laid-back with spaces for teens to chill out. They also offer group activities led by cool counselors. Of course, kids can lounge about and chat with new friends, play video games and watch movies, or sunbathe on ships where Vibe has its own outdoor sun deck.

Scheduled activities might include movie making, a shipwide game of Gotcha, karaoke competitions, talent shows and group games.

On Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, Vibe has a secret entrance off the ship's promenade deck, a high-tech media room, a central pit for group gatherings, and a sun deck with a hot tub and plunge pool. On Disney Wonder and Disney Magic, the teens get the faux funnel space with an industrial vibe and multiple TVs for gaming and movies. On Disney Wish, Vibe is inspired by an artist's loft in Paris, with floor-to-ceiling windows.

That sounds cool. Can adults go into the kids club on Disney cruises?

Yes, but not when drop-off kid programming is going on.

Disney Cruise Line ships schedule open houses in the different kids and teens clubs each day. During this time, anyone — adult or kid — can come and try out the kids club features. That means adults can fly the Millennium Falcon or play video games, toddlers can crawl around Andy's room with their caregivers and younger kids can check out the hip teen spaces.

Usually, when the Disney Oceaneer Club or Lab is having an open house, there will be drop-off programming in the other space.

Additionally, Disney Wish is the first ship to have a hangout for young adults ages 18 to 20. Newly minted adults can hang out in The Hideaway, which features a dance floor and DJ booth, as well as lounge space.

How do I use the It's a Small World Nursery on a Disney cruise?

Families with children ages 6 months to 3 years can drop off their children for highly supervised playtime at the It's a Small World Nursery. Unlike the other kids clubs on board, the nursery is not free. Families will pay $9 per child, per hour ($8 for each additional child in the same family).

The nursery is also not a drop-in-at-will space. Parents must sign up for hour-long slots in advance. You can book up to 10 hours per child before your cruise and add or adjust hours once on board. The advice is to prebook the most important spots, such as when the adults have booked a special meal, spa treatment or shore excursion.

At the nursery, kids can play with age-appropriate toys, watch movies and cartoons, and listen to stories. Cribs are available for nap time in a quiet room separate from the playroom.

Parents and caregivers dropping off their children may send them with baby food and formula or milk; diapers, wipes and pull-ups; a change of clothes; blanket and/or pacifier.

Children with special needs are welcome at the nursery.

What time do the kids clubs open on Disney Cruises?

Typically, the kids clubs open at 9 a.m. (or whenever the ship arrives in port) and close at midnight. Edge and Vibe's open hours vary but often run from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m.

Are Disney cruise kids clubs free? How much does Disney cruise daycare cost?

Disney cruise kids clubs are free to use throughout the day and evening. Unlike other other cruise lines, the late-night open hours do not incur a fee.

The exception is the It's a Small World Nursery, which charges by the hour. The fee is $9 per child per hour ($8 for each additional child within the same family). You can cancel up to four hours before your reservation time with no penalty. If you cancel after that time, you'll have to pay half the fee. No-shows must pay the total amount.

What else does Disney Cruise Line offer families with children?

Kid-friendly activities do not just take place in the Disney cruise kids clubs. Disney Cruise Line ships offer a huge array of events and attractions for young cruisers.

All ships have pools, splash areas and waterslides or rides, as well as movies both on the pool deck and in a dedicated theater. Activities for the whole family take place in the D Lounge and might include games shows, trivia, crafts and karaoke.

Disney's Broadway-style shows and evening deck parties are designed with kids in mind. Kids can meet and pose with photos with their favorite characters and princesses, or join them for dance parties. For a fee, children can get princess and pirate makeovers in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or attend a tea party with princess hostesses.

Bottom line: Disney cruise kids club

Whether your kids are 6 months, 6 years or 16 years, they will find something to love about the kids clubs on Disney Cruise Line ships. Your child might beg to stay in the Disney cruise kids clubs all day or just attend for specific activities. Still, your entire family will always find a ton of activities to keep them busy and happy from sunrise to bedtime on a Disney cruise vacation.

Royal Caribbean kids club: A guide to Adventure Ocean

Erica Silverstein

Royal Caribbean's megaships provide tons of activities and entertainment to suit all ages and personalities — and that includes kids. Not only do ships provide family-friendly programming, but they have drop-off spaces for kids and teens to hang out with peers and not their parents.

On Royal Caribbean, kids clubs include Adventure Ocean, Teen Lounge, and the Royal Babies & Tots Nursery. Here's everything you need to know about these onboard play spaces — before your kids ditch you and spend all day doing age-appropriate activities with their newfound friends.

Does Royal Caribbean offer a kids club?

cruise the clubs

The family-friendly cruise line doesn't offer just one kids club — it offers several! And they're available on every ship in the fleet.

Royal Caribbean's Adventure Ocean kids club is divided into three groups: Aquanauts, Explorers and Voyagers. The groups will either have their own space or shared play areas, depending on the ship and the number of kids on board.

Ships also have teen clubs and lounge spaces (including outdoor hangouts) and nurseries and toddler play areas for the youngest cruisers.

What's the age limit for Royal Caribbean kids clubs?

The Royal Babies & Tots Program takes children ages 6 to 36 months. Some ships offer drop-off sessions, while others offer spaces for parents or caregivers to play safely with babies and toddlers.

Adventure Ocean targets kids ages 3 (and toilet trained) up to 12. It is further divided into age-specific groups: Aquanauts (3 to 5 years old), Explorers (6 to 8 years old) and Voyagers (9 to 12 years old).

Note that on Freedom, Odyssey, Oasis, Wonder, Icon and Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's kids clubs are divided into AO Babies (6 to 36 months), AO Juniors (3 to 5 years old) and AO Kids (6 to 12 years old) . On these ships, you'll likely find extra-large AO Kids play areas where school-age children can choose play areas and activities based on their interests, rather than all the kids of the same age playing together.

Tweens and teens ages 13 and up can participate in teen activities or hang out in their ship's lounge and club. The upper age limit for Royal Caribbean's teen club is 17. Once you're 18, even if you're still in high school, you can't participate in youth programming.

What activities are available for kids in Adventure Ocean on Royal Caribbean?

cruise the clubs

Activities will vary by ship facilities and by age group, but will typically include a mix of active games, arts and crafts (often inspired by the cruise destination) and video game play. Some ships have Adventure Science Labs for hands-on experimenting, while others have Imagination Studios where there's always an art project going on. Larger ships might also have the Adventure Ocean Theater where kids can watch or star in shows or play theater games.

Some Royal Caribbean ships, like the biggest Oasis-class vessels, have Play Spaces with climbing structures geared toward the younger cruisers, where kids can explore under parent supervision.

What activities are available for teens?

cruise the clubs

Many Royal Caribbean ships have spaces reserved for teenage cruisers, but the number, layout and names of these teen lounges vary across the fleet.

On Wonder of the Seas, for example, the indoor hangout is called Social100 and an outdoor gathering spot is called The Patio. On some ships, the Living Room is a place to chill with video games, table games (like foosball) and maybe even board games for organized competitions, and the Fuel Teen Club is the evening hangout with a DJ, dance floor and mocktail/soda bar.

Related: The 5 best cruises for teens

Activities might involve sports competitions, movie watching, video and board game play, scavenger hunts, evening dance parties or karaoke. Youth staff is on hand to supervise and get games and parties started, but the schedule for teens leaves more room for independent hanging out than the more structured program for the younger kids.

What about little cruisers too young for the kids club on Royal Caribbean?

cruise the clubs

Royal Caribbean offers the Royal Babies & Tots program (or AO Babies on select ships) for diaper-wearing kids too young for Adventure Ocean. Onboard nurseries are outfitted with age-appropriate toys and soft mats for crawling and playing. Many also have a nap room with cribs.

During select times, parents can play in a safe space with their babies and toddlers. Otherwise, they can drop off their little ones into the care of trained early childhood staff.

Note that Explorer of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas are the only Royal Caribbean ships without a nursery.

What are the hours of Royal Caribbean's kids clubs?

Royal Caribbean's Adventure Ocean runs from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. The Late Night Party Zone typically operates from 10 p.m. until 1 a.m. Schedules can change based on the itinerary, so check at the kids club when you board the ship for open hours on your sailing.

Often, the kids facilities will close from roughly noon to 2 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. to encourage family mealtime. The kids clubs are open when the ship is in port, and kids can attend activities in the nursery and Adventure Ocean even if their parents are off the ship. In these cases, kids in the youth program during lunch hours will enjoy lunch together.

Teen lounges often open later and might not have structured programming until the afternoon or evening.

Are the kids clubs free or does child care cost money?

Daytime and early evening kid and teen club activities are included in your fare, and you do not have to pay extra for these services.

After 10 p.m., kids attending Adventure Ocean, AO Juniors and AO Kids can join the Late Night Party Zone until 1 a.m. at an hourly rate of $10 per hour, per child.

Parents can play with their babies and toddlers in the kids club free of charge but nursery drop-off costs $6 per hour, per child, before 6 p.m. and $8 per hour, per child, after 6 p.m.

What else does Royal Caribbean offer families with children?

cruise the clubs

Royal Caribbean ships offer tons of activities that kids can enjoy with their peers or with their families. Pools, waterslides and splash areas are ideal for warm-weather fun, and all Royal Caribbean ships have rock-climbing walls (it's a Royal Caribbean signature). Shows of all kinds (musicals, ice skating, comedy, Promenade parades, AquaTheater and outdoor movies) are geared for all ages. Many ships offer miniature golf, ping pong, arcades and sports courts for basketball and other games.

The bigger ships have attractions including zip lines, surfing or skydiving simulators, bumper cars, escape rooms, carousels, laser tag and giant dry slides that will entertain kids and adults.

Royal Caribbean dining options are always family friendly with kids' menus in the main dining room and specialty restaurants. Young cruisers will especially like casual eateries, such as Sorrento's Pizza , Johnny Rockets (burgers and shakes), Boardwalk Dog House (hot dogs) and El Loco Fresh (Mexican) found on select ships. Plus, there's always free soft-serve ice cream on the pool deck.

Bottom line: Royal Caribbean kids club

Royal Caribbean's Adventure Ocean, teen lounges and nurseries provide safe and fun spaces for kids to enjoy their vacation with peers, make new friends and give parents some time to do grownup things, like wine tasting and spa treatments (or simply enjoying a peaceful dip in the adults-only solarium). Some kids want to play there all day long, while others might dip in and out for an hour or two and spend the rest of their cruise with their family.

No matter how your children see it, Royal Caribbean dedicates a ton of space and creativity to making its youth programs some of the best at sea. Its varied offerings allow kids of all ages to find their happy places on board and your kids to grow up with Adventure Ocean over years of family vacations, from tot to teen.

Cruise ship kids clubs offer independence on family vacations. Here's everything to know.

cruise the clubs

  • Kids clubs keep young guests entertained and give parents a break on cruises.
  • Most kids programs are included in the cruise fare.
  • Kids clubs on ships are more elaborate than at resorts on land, one expert said.

Sarah Brumfield and her husband, T.J., took their two daughters on a Carnival Cruise Line sailing last spring, and while the family spent plenty of time together, the couple also did their own thing away from the kids.

Brumfield, 39, could go to a comedy show, and her oldest child, Zoe, could later belt out a Britney Spears song at the teen club with a friend she'd made on board.

"I love family vacations," Brumfield, who is based in Omaha, Nebraska, told USA TODAY. "It's just sometimes if you get into those longer family vacations, you're kind of on top of each other a lot, and it can get kind of stressful, and you really don't get a break."

Kids and teen programming on cruises help provide a respite, allowing families to enjoy quality time on a ship and have their own space as needed.

"I think it does make me feel a bit more independent, especially as you get older," Zoe, 17, said.

Looking for cheap cruise bookings?: What travelers should know about finding deals

I toured Celebrity Cruises newest ship from my couch: How you can check it out before booking

These programs even factor into whether the family, which Brumfield said take "one big trip" a year," go on a cruise versus another type of vacation. She is among a number of travelers who have found kids clubs an appealing incentive, allowing kids space to play while knowing that they can't go too far.

'They do really well with that structure'

For other travelers, the programs allow for a different kind of quality time. Brendan Peoples and his husband, Edgar Castlow, take their five young kids on cruises once or twice a year. In addition to having alone time as a couple on an excursion or at the spa, they make a point to spend time with each child two-on-one, while their other kids are at the club.

"We get to have time to ourselves ... but we get one-kid personal time," the Houston area-based tax adviser said.

Peoples, who only sails with Carnival Cruise Line, said the line's program is much more than "parking them in front of a video," and offers a mix of activities that serve his kids well.

"They do really well with that structure, so they don't get bored quickly ... Every day it's something different," the 54-year-old said.

How old do children have to be to use the kids clubs?

Mainstream cruise lines typically have dedicated programming for young kids, preteens and teenagers, and group children by age, though the exact ages of the groupings may vary by line, according to Bianca Rios, owner of the travel agency Ahoy Vacations.

"I think one of the best parts about cruises is that there is a dedicated space for everyone, even from the smallest baby, teenagers, college kids, there's always somewhere where they can go and be entertained," Rios said.

However, generally, kids are required to be   at least 3 years old and potty-trained in order to use the kids clubs, she said, and the lines cap participation at 18. "That matters if they're turning 18 during the cruise," she said.

What activities do cruise line kids clubs offer?

When it comes to kids clubs, not all cruise lines are equal. Kristi Marcelle, a senior travel adviser at family-focused travel agency Ciao Bambino!, said some lines, such as Disney Cruise Line, have more elaborate programs than others.

"That is basically nirvana for kids because there (are) so many different things to do and it's very engaging and hands-on," she said.

The line offers a range of activities for different age groups. Disney's  Oceaneer Club for kids 3 to 12 features storytelling sessions and play areas, while at Edge, guests between 11 and 14 will find a dance floor and karaoke, among other onboard offerings, according to the Disney Cruise Line  website .

Norwegian Cruise Line's youth programming includes the Splash Academy for potty-trained 3-year-olds through kids age 12, which has crafts, scavenger hunts and more, and Entourage for teens 13 to 17 "where they can hang out, play video games, watch movies and have themed dance parties," a spokesperson said in an email.

Marcelle said by looking at the kids club offerings – whether on the cruise line's website or by consulting a travel adviser – guests can get a good idea of "whether the cruise line is family-centric or family-friendly."

Planning a family reunion?: Cruises offer something for every relative

Rios said the lines provide a schedule travelers can consult to see what's on offer. But take note: some activities may require advanced sign-up.

Generally, parents can preregister their kids for the clubs or sign them up on board, though that is largely necessary only for younger kids 12 and under who are in "secured programming," Rios said. She added that youth programs often do an icebreaker activity on the first day, so kids can get to know each other.

Story continues below.

How much do kids clubs cost?

Kids clubs are generally included in the cruise fare during regular hours, Rios said, but child care for kids under 3 years old will likely cost a fee.

Passengers may encounter other fees, too. For example, while Norwegian's programs are complimentary, the line does charge a $1 per minute late-pickup fee "if children are not picked up before the venue closes," the spokesperson said.

"The Splash Academy also offers Late-Night Fun Zone, which allows parents to drop off their children between 11 p.m. and 1 AM a.m. for an additional group-sitting charge,"  the spokesperson added. That fee is $6 an hour, and another $4 per hour for every sibling.

Resorts on land may have similar programs, Marcelle said, but the offerings tend to be more wide-ranging on cruises, where guests spend much of their time on board. "They're more comprehensive on a ship," she said.

Cruise Kids Clubs: What You Need to Know

Cruises for kids are fun for all with the cruise kids club.

Most major cruise lines provide care for younger passengers with cruise kids clubs , where your tiny tikes can play with other kids and enjoy guided activities while you get to take a break from parenting for a day. While many of these clubs are quite similar, there are some important differences between the different cruise lines that are worth considering when planning cruises for kids . From the more immersive environments of Camp Discovery on Princess Cruises, to the less restrictive “all-ages” approach on Disney’s ships, we’ll go over the different kids clubs on some of the biggest cruise lines and what makes them each unique.

Adventure Ocean on Royal Caribbean

First up in our list of cruise kids clubs , we have Adventure Ocean, the complimentary, award-winning youth program from Royal Caribbean. This kids club separates kids and teens based on their ages, so they can participate in age-appropriate group activities with each other. These groups range from the Royal Babies & Tots program which is for ages 6 to 36 months, all the way up to the Voyagers group for ages 9 to 12. Younger kids will conduct cool experiments and earn the title of Certified Jr. Adventure Scientists, while older kids will take part in activities that will teach them things through edutainment. In addition, teens can hang out in teens-only spaces where they can come and go as they please, which provide fun activities late into the night. This age specialization makes Royal Caribbean stand out as one of the most well rounded cruises for kids of all ages.

Splash Academy and Entourage on Norwegian Cruise Line

Another cruise line that offers quality cruises for kids is Norwegian Cruise Lines, which has two complimentary cruise kids clubs , one for ages 3 to 12 called Splash Academy and one for teens ages 13 to 17 called Entourage. The younger kids here will be supervised by a youth staff that will lead them in creative play and active games. The teens on the other hand get to hang out at the coolest teen lounge at sea or dance at their own dance club at night, and will enjoy video games, movies, arts, music, and sports while they are here. If you are looking to enjoy a date night without your little ones, you can leave them at the Late Night Fun Zone for a small fee and know that they are in good hands.

Camp Ocean on Carnival

For anyone looking for cruises for kids who are very young, you should know that Carnival is the only major cruise line to offer complimentary care for kids as young as 2 years old. Camp Ocean seeks to bring all the best parts of summer camp out to sea, with activities like arts and crafts, songs, games, toys, dancing, movies and video games. Your kids will be grouped by age and given cool marine-life labels — “Penguin” for ages 2 to 5, “Stingray” for ages 6 to 8, and “Shark” for ages 9 to 11. When it’s mealtime at this cruise kids club , kids get their own menu and are served camp classics like mac & cheese or chicken nuggets. They also provide late night care after the sun goes down for an additional fee.

Camp Discovery on Princess

Cruises for kids can be very different experiences depending on which line you sail with, and Princess Cruises takes a more immersive approach to cruise kids clubs with Camp Discovery, where kids, tweens, and teens can enjoy specially crafted themed environments based on their age. The youngest kids will go to The Treehouse, a bright and whimsical forest-themed environment with fun woodland characters. Kids 8 to 12 will stay at The Lodge, which is inspired by the great outdoors and offers sport activities and cozy hangout spots. Finally, The Beach House is a place for teens to socialize in a contemporary, beach-themed area. These different areas provide a place for guided activities and fun exploration for kids of all ages.

Oceaneer Club on Disney Cruise Line

Disney is probably one of the first cruise lines that you think of when planning cruises for kids , and they happen to have a unique approach to entertaining kids. Unlike other cruise kids clubs , participation in activities is based on interest and maturity instead of their actual age. This means that if you send siblings who are of much different ages, they don’t have to be split up for activities, making it a great option for bigger families. The Oceaneer Club is inhabited by many iconic Disney characters that will delight younger kids with character-driven performances and special storytelling sessions, as they will enjoy larger-than-life play areas with fun interactive activities. Tweens get their own spot to enjoy high-tech entertainment on flat-screen TVs, computers, and video games, while teens can partake in teen-only dance parties and karaoke, so there is always something for everyone.

6 Best Kids’ Clubs on Cruise Ships

One of the highlights of a cruise vacation is the kids’ club! These onboard activity hubs encourage kids to play together—usually free of additional charges—while parents enjoy some alone time. Here are the best kids’ clubs on cruise ships.

MSC Bellissima, Mini Club Lego; Courtesy MSC

1. MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers six distinct kids’ areas on their ships. Parents with babies can go to MSC Baby Time to play together and meet other families with children of a similar age. Little ones will love shaking, rattling and rolling Chicco toys . Babies can even compete in Mini Olympic Games! New MSC Babycare service allows parents to drop off kids ages 1 to 3 for an added fee.

Mini Club is for sailors ages 3 to 6 and Junior Club is for pirates ages 7 to 11. LEGO bricks , arts, crafts, dance performances, sports and video games are some of the activities kids will enjoy under the care of professional staff.

Tweens and teens get their own spaces with the Young Club (ages 12 to 14) and Teens Club (ages 15 to 17). Supervision is provided, but older kids are invited to do their own thing in activities like sport tournaments, dance contests and teen beauty treatments. Flash mobs, karaoke, a teen white party (where teens wear all  white pants , white shoes and a white shirt ) and even a teen prom make it even more fun for teenagers to gather and make new friends.

And when families want to hang out together on MSC cruise ships, there’s DOREMI Studio, a lounge just for families that includes a green screen for talent shows and family disco. Can you dig it?

2. Princess Cruises

What’s super cool about Princess Cruises’ kids’ club is their partnership with Discovery. Reimagined youth centers are rolling out fleetwide in 2020 and include three areas for kids of various ages. The Treehouse is a forest-themed space for children ages 3 to 7. Kids ages 8 to 12 will kick back at The Lodge, where they can play sports and lounge in an outdoor-themed area. The Beach House is just for teens (ages 13 to17) and gives them their own place to chill and socialize.

Camp Discovery hosts all sorts of engaging activities inspired by popular Animal Planet and Discovery channel shows, like MythBusters , Shark Week and Finding Bigfoot . Kids can step into a scene from one of their favorite shows, try hands-on challenges, explore different environments and even meet local animals, like puppies in Alaska and parrots in the Caribbean. Babies, toddlers and preschoolers are welcome in Camp Discovery when supervised by a parent.

Teens will feel like VIPs at the Rock the Boat Party, where they get to dress up in their fancies, walk the red carpet and sip mocktails. Sports competitions, dance classes lead by crew dancers and scary movie nights give teens lots of opportunities to make loads of special memories.

3. Disney Cruise Line

The magic of Disney comes to life for kids aboard Disney’s four cruise ships in slightly different ways. Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Disney’s Ocean Lab are the two main clubs for kids ages 3 to12. While they are two different clubs, they are also connected so that kids can explore and visit friends and family members. Andy’s Room, modeled after Toy Story , is on all four ships in Disney’s Oceaneer Club, yet is multi-level on the Disney Wonder and Disney Magic.

Character performances, dress-up, drawing, storytelling, games and crafts keep kids’ imaginations going. Popular activities bring whimsical Disney storytelling to life, such as Toy Story Boot Camp, Jedi Training on Disney Dream and Become Iron Man on Disney Magic. Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream feature Marvel Super Hero Academy, Star War- themed areas and Magic PlayFloor, an interactive floor where kids can race cars around a track like Lightning McQueen or soar over London with Peter Pan.

Disney’s youth centers boast some of the longest operating hours at sea, and even offer lunch and dinner at Disney’s Oceaneer Club on select days so that parents can enjoy some of the awesome adult-only dining options. Parents, babies, preschoolers, those over age 18, and kids whom are not yet potty-trained are invited to visit during Youth Activities Open House.

It’s A Small World Nursery offers some of the lowest rates for baby and toddler care at sea. Horns, wheels and other interactive toys delight toddlers, while the quiet area in the back of the nursery is reserved for naptime. A one-way mirror makes it easy for parents to check in on their little ones without disrupting their play.

Tweens and teens get their own trendy hangout spaces on all four Disney cruise ships. Edge is for ages 11 to 14, while Vibe is for ages 14 to 17. Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream even feature private teen sun decks within Vibe. High-tech entertainment, interactive activities like DJ lessons and improv, a coffee bar and smoothie station keep older kids coming back for more.

Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay , also features special areas just for kids, including Scuttle’s Cove play area for ages 3 to 12 to explore with counselors, the teen Hide Out, and supervised tween activities.

4. Royal Caribbean

Adventure Ocean is Royal Caribbean’s youth programming for toilet-trained kids ages 3 to 17 hosted by trained childcare staff. Edu-tainment is the name of the game and it’s all about making learning fun for kids and giving teens a place to kick back.

Hands-on programming includes science, art and theater activities like Wacky Water Workshop and volcano experiments. Play spaces and activities are separated by age group. Aquanauts, ages 3 to 5, will enjoy space night, finger painting and bingo. Explorers, ages 6 to 8, go ga-ga over pajama night, talent show and Nutty Nicknames. Karaoke, scavenger hunts and crazy tag are just a few of the fun options for Voyagers, ages 9 to 11.

Teens ages 12 to 14 are entertained with video games, pool parties, scavenger hunts and sports tournaments. Teens 15 to 17-years-old get to roll the dice at Casino Night, train to be a DJ and face off in Battle of the Sexes. There’s also fun island activities for teens, such as beach volleyball and water balloon toss.

Royal Babies is a drop-off nursery on select ships for kids 6 months to 36 months. Parents wishing to play or create art with their children will enjoy Free-time play and the Royal Tot Art Program. The Toy Lending Program is also fabulous for families who want to pack light yet ensure their little ones have engaging toys to explore everyday.

Late Night Group sitting is available from 10 pm to 2 am for parents who want to get their party on. Kids ages 3 to 11 can be cared for in their own late night party for an hourly fee. Or take advantage of Sitters at Sea, a program that includes babysitting in your own stateroom so kids can rest and play in their own space for an added fee. My Time Family Dining is a great way for families to start meals together, then kids will be escorted off to Adventure Ocean while parents continue the rest of their food and beverages without the kids asking when they’ll be done. Adventure Ocean Dining is an option for kids to eat dinner with youth staff and friends.

5. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line’s complimentary Splash Academy is available aboard 16 of the 17 ships within the fleet. The facilities and activities are split into four different age groups for children ages 3 to 12.

Turtles ages 3 to 5 get giddy over Circus School, parades and treasure hunts with trained staff. Seals ages 6 to 9 will learn Circus Skills like plate juggling, participate in team-building challenges and paint. Dolphins ages 10 to 12 can try to walk on stilts, play sports, video games and go undercover at Spy Night. Port Play and Late Night Fun Zone offer supervised entertainment for the kids so that parents can enjoy a port excursion or evening activities on their own. Fees may apply.

Parents and kids under age 2 can play together at Guppies, a sensory activity space featuring music and movement. Families sailing on Norwegian Escape with tots under age 3 can drop them off for special care at the Guppies Nursery for an added fee.

Teens ages 13 to 17 will love hanging out at Entourage, where they can watch movies , play video games and compete in sports all on their own (without pesky adults around). By day, teens can create balloon sculptures and graffiti art. By night, they can shake it at themed dance parties in the teen dance club, including Glow and College Night.

Family activities onboard Norwegian Cruise Line include pizza making, game shows and trivia. Youth counselors and Cruise Staff help make things fun and create great bonding experiences for the whole family.

Want to whip around a racetrack onboard a cruise ship? Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore are newer ships that feature the only racetracks at sea (which are some of the highest-rated recreation activities onboard), open-air laser tag arenas and dedicated virtual reality and gaming complexes.

6. Carnival

Carnival Cruise Line carries about one million kids a year, the most in the cruising industry, due to their focuses on fun and affordability. Carnival features three kids’ programs each with their own separate spaces.

Camp Ocean is for kids ages 2 to 11 and features new marine-themed programming onboard all 27 Carnival ships. Decked out like an underwater play space, Camp Ocean offers more than 200 ocean-inspired activities such as Design Your Own Aquarium and Create a Penguin From Oreos. Experienced staff encourages Penguins, ages 2 to 5, to create miniature play igloos, Sting Rays ages 6 to 8 to create Sea Salt Art, and Sharks, ages 9 to 11, to participate in interactive gaming, among other activities. Some ships have Party Reef space for group activities and Creative Corner for arts and crafts breakouts. Camp Ocean covers 11 key areas of play to help ensure children find activities they are truly interested in.

Circle “C” is for 12 to 14 year-olds and Club 02 is for 15 to 17-year-olds. Teens can come and go as they please from Club 02 and participate in activities like capture the flag, jewelry making and karaoke. They can hang out, listen to music and even attend a prom. Circle “C” is a space for tweens to Cruise, Chill and Connect. Bean bag toss , board games , video games and even themed face painting are fun supervised activities they can check out as they choose.

Carnival also offers family activates like Seuss at Sea, “ Hasbro , The Game Show,” all-ages comedy performances and some of the largest water parks at sea. When the family all gets together to enjoy these interactive activities, you can’t help but have a good time.

While every tour pro has the benefit of using perfectly customized gear, Bryson DeChambeau’s set-up takes things to a whole new level.

Dubbed golf’s “mad scientist,” DeChambeau has a long history of quirky gear configurations , which currently includes a driver  designed for the long-drive circuit and single-length, 3D-printed irons .

Another DeChambeau method making headlines this weekend is his golf-ball-selection strategy. Prior to his round, he floats his balls in Epsom salts to identify the ones with perfectly-centered cores.

As the three-stroke leader of the U.S. Open at the 54-hole mark, it’s clear that there’s something to DeChambeau’s unorthodox approach.

Marios Iliopoulos buys AEK Athens football club from Dimitris Melissanidis

Controversial Greek passenger ship owner assumes the leadership of one of the country’s top teams

Greek shipowner Dimitris Melissanidis announced on Monday he is quitting the leadership of AEK Athens, one of Greece’s top football clubs, which he handed over to his peer Marios Iliopoulos.

“Pardon me, but my voyage has reached its final destination — I am passing the reins to shipowner Mr Marios Iliopoulos,” Melissanidis said in a statement posted on the club’s website.

cruise the clubs

Melissanidis, founder of Aegean Shipping, said he is stepping back for age and health reasons after reaching all the goals he had set for himself for the club: bringing it back from relegation, leading it to two national championships and completing the construction of its brand-new football stadium.

“We started from zero and brought AEK to where she should be,” Melissanidis said.

No price was disclosed for the transaction but a Greek sports website said the club changed hands for €90m ($96.7m).

In joint statements with Iliopoulos later in the day, Melissanidis revealed he had received offers from overseas investment funds but did not want to leave the club in hands of people “he did not know”.

As for Iliopoulos, he stated he was all in to help AEK win championships.

“I will give my soul, my mind ... my whole being to conquer titles,” the Iliopoulos said.

Chequered history

Iliopoulos is a well-known owner of passenger ships operating under the Seajets brand.

He was one of the few players daring enough to buy cruise ships during the Covid crisis and has made considerable profits from flipping some of them after the pandemic.

A former rally race driver who is active in charity, Iliopoulos is not free from the controversy caused by the fraudulent sinking of the 150,000-dwt Brillante Virtuoso (built 1992) — a ship he owned.

The case gave rise to a prominent book by two Bloomberg journalists and also sparked initiatives to turn it into a TV film.

The Best Alternative to Dating Apps? Running Clubs, Apparently.

Inspired by one thirsty TikTok video after another, users are hoping to find their next romantic encounter at the finish line. Here’s what you should know before dating a runner.

A smiling woman in a sleeveless shirt and leggings sinks into a squat as someone stretches beside her on a sidewalk. Behind them, about a dozen more people in exercise apparel sweat and mill about, seemingly at the end of a run.

By Gina Cherelus

In the Third Wheel column, Gina Cherelus explores the delights and horrors of sex, dating and relationships.

Cindy Sandjo, a 29-year-old content creator who works in I.T. and lives in Dallas, was initially interested in joining a running club because she was in search of other Black people she could connect with.

She joined her first run at the end of May and immediately began posting videos about her newfound interest on social media. She was quickly informed by her followers that running clubs “are the new dating apps.”

“I joined for the running and also for the community, just to find people that have similar interests as me,” she said. “But I stayed because, yeah, it’s an opportunity for me to find a husband.”

A recent flurry of videos on TikTok and Instagram suggests that running clubs, in addition to being a great way to improve one’s health and train with other like-minded individuals, are also the new way to date. Why chase potential lovers online when they may be waiting for you at the finish line?

After about a week of training with Run It Up, a Dallas running club, Ms. Sandjo was stopped during a run by another participant who said he had seen her Instagram . It was a Saturday, and they struck up conversation, exchanged contact information and messaged each other before meeting up the next day to run together.

“I told him, ‘I’m just starting to run, so I’m sorry if I slow you down,’” she recalled. “And he was like, ‘No no no, it’s going to be my off day, so I’ll match your pace.’”

Posts from new members sharing their experience joining running clubs and enjoying the benefits — dating is high on the list — have driven social media users to look into running clubs in their communities: in California, in Illinois, in Florida. In one tongue-in-cheek video posted by the Chicago Run Collective, a woman highlights her reasons for joining the group, embodied by a montage of shirtless, good-looking men with ripped bodies.

One man posted a video on TikTok joking about how he had joined running clubs as an alternative to dating apps and was surprised by how little socializing was taking place: “Why is everybody sprinting, and why is everybody in the front?”

All of this attention has been a boon for clubs looking to build their membership. Many even incorporate other social gatherings, like post-run meet-ups at local bars, that enhance the appeal for singles looking to flirt while getting fit.

But what is it actually like when you want to go the distance with long-distance runners, especially if you’re a newbie? Runners are known to be highly disciplined , laser-focused on the practice and obsessed with their health. This might not be the best match for late-night, shot-drinking partygoers. But in some cases, opposites do attract.

The Benefits Are Great, but the Hours?

Theo Murdaugh, the founder of Run It Up, says that it’s important for people to understand that running is a lifestyle, especially during an intense training season. His ex was just getting into running when they began dating more than two years ago, but she wasn’t quite at his level. They would at times have to cut date nights short so he could rest before a long run the next morning. “My ex would always say, ‘I feel like I’m your sidekick when it comes to running,’” he said.

“I think when somebody dates me and sees that I’m really intentional about it and they see that I’m doing Run It Up, they love it from the outside looking in,” he added. “And then, when they start dating me, they’re like: ‘Oh shoot, this dude is really serious about this. Like, he literally scheduled our dates around his running schedule.’”

He founded the running club about three months ago, after noticing a lack of running spaces for Black and brown people in Dallas. Mr. Murdaugh, who is 37 and has been running for more than 10 years, said that the group had begun with around 20 people and that now it’s at roughly 300, a growth that he credits to the club’s promotional videos on Instagram and the surging interest in running clubs as dating hot spots.

He normally runs about 30 miles a week, spread across Tuesday, Wednesday and the weekend. If he has a date on Friday, he’ll usually ask to meet up for happy hour around 4 or 5 p.m. and stay out until around 8 or 9. That way, he’s getting a full night’s rest before his 15-mile run the next day.

“Saturday is a little bit more flexible because those are normally my recovery, easy-pace runs, so I can do a 6, 7 o’clock dinner,” he said. “But then I like to be home before midnight because I have my recovery run the next day and then I also don’t want to run hangover or run not feeling good.”

Don’t Flirt Where You Eat (Er, Jog)

Julia Meyer, the founder of Point B, a New York City running and fitness club, said that there were definitely upsides to the experience, but that if someone was joining a run club to date, that person should consider the risks — and make sure not to come off as “predatory.”

“Within my community I can see people finding each other cute and going on dates and stuff, but it’s also like dating your co-worker in a way,” said Ms. Meyer, 29, who lives in Queens.

“It’s up to you if you want to make this awkward for yourself if it doesn’t work out,” she added.

Her training periods are intense and can include 14-mile bike rides or up to 10-mile runs most days. Ms. Meyer said that she was currently single and dating, but that she most likely wouldn’t date a runner again after having an unpleasant experience with one in the past.

“The person I’m dating now is a photographer, so he spends hours on end in a darkroom,” she said. “So it’s like, Yeah, go to your little darkroom thing — I’m going to be outside running for the next four hours.”

Heads Up: Some Runners Just Want to Run

Noah Hutchins, who has been running and playing sports since he was a child, doesn’t mind the growing trend of people joining run clubs, including the one he co-founded, BK Run Club, to date, because those new additions are getting the added benefit of improving their health.

“I don’t have a run club so that people can date, like it actually is more of a health-and-wellness-centered idea,” said Mr. Hutchins, who lives in Brooklyn. “For some of these people who aren’t currently runners, it’s good social pressure to get into running actually. A lot of people are turning into runners because they want to date and be social.”

The benefit to dating a runner or someone who is into fitness, according to Mr. Hutchins, is that a person’s lifestyle and discipline can be motivational to a partner who shares similar health goals. Being into running is not a deal breaker for him, but an appealing added bonus.

“She doesn’t have to be as serious as I am about my health and fitness and stuff, because I think I’m a little bit of a psychopath,” he said.

Mr. Murdaugh, however, cautioned that if you were going to join with the sole intention to date, you might come up short. Many participants are there with a running goal in mind, and no one likes a creep floating around.

“What I would tell a new person is, ‘Don’t think you’re just going to come out there and kick it,’” he said.
