Travelling abroad requires a lot of preparation, from arranging the trip to fit your schedule and saving up for the upcoming travel, to visa application.

If you have a long-haul flight and you wish to stopover in the UAE, a transit visa is what you need.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels

Instead of sitting idly at the airport, you might as well explore the country and enjoy it in small doses. Who knows, after this short experience, you'll decide to come back to the country and stay for much longer.

Here's how you can get a transit visa:

Requirements

To get a transit visa, you must have:

  • passport with a minimum validity of three months
  • photo against a white background
  • ticket booking to a third destination, other than the one you are coming from

How to apply

These days, travel scams are rampant and busy travellers are easy, susceptible targets. As a traveller, you have to remember that only the UAE-based airlines you're travelling with can arrange your transit visa before your trip.

If you are thinking of getting a transit visa to the UAE, make sure to communicate this to your airline. If you booked your trip through a travel agency, the agency can help you get the visa. You have to remember, though, that all visas are routed through the airline.

Your agency and airline agents will sort everything out for you, but it's always best to follow-up and verify with them.

Where to buy your tickets

Since only UAE-based airlines can apply for a transit visa on your behalf, make sure that you buy your plane tickets only from airlines that are based in the country.

If you wish to visit Dubai, for instance, you have to buy your tickets from either Emirates Airline or Fly Dubai. Meanwhile, if you wish to visit Abu Dhabi, get your tickets from either Etihad Airways or Air Arabia.

Duration of visa

Your transit visa is valid for 48 hours or for 96 hours. However, if you've been issued a 48-hour transit visa, you cannot request to have it extended to 96 hours.

Transit visas for 48 hours are free, and valid for 48 hours from from entry into the UAE. Since the visa cannot be extended or renewed, you must leave the country within 48 hours from arrival.

Meanwhile, for a 96-hour transit visa, you need to pay Dh50. This visa is valid for 96 hours from entry into the country, requiring you to leave the country within 96 hours from arrival. This visa is also not extendable, nor renewable.

No additional fees

Before leaving the country, you only have to pay a departure fee of Dh300, and that's it. No additional fees will be collected from you. If any organisation or agency asks you to make extra payment, refuse and remember that it isn't allowed. If they insist on collecting an extra payment from you, you can report to airport authorities.

A transit visa is not for everyone. You can just get off your flight at Dubai International and proceed to immigration, and you'll be allowed to stay in the UAE for 30 days, if you're a passport holder of the following countries:

  • New Zealand
  • UK and Northern Ireland
  • Vatican City

You are eligible for a multiple entry 90‑day visit visa that's valid for 6 months from the date of issue, and for a stay of 90 days in total. You are also entitled to apply for a pre‑arranged visit visa if you've used up your 90‑day visa on arrival if you're a passport holder of one of these countries:

  • Bahamas Islands
  • Czech Republic
  • El Salvador
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • Russian Federation
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Solomon Islands

Okay to Board (OTB)

This important step in the travel process is often mandatory for travellers from various countries, including India. It's crucial to understand the 'Okay to Board' procedure to ensure your travel plans go smoothly. At StampThePassport, we're here to guide you through this process with ease.

What is 'Okay to Board'?

The 'Okay to Board' (OTB) is a verification process that ensures your visa status is valid and authentic before you board your flight. It is primarily applicable for Indian citizens travelling to certain countries, like the UAE, Qatar, Oman, and Bahrain. It is mandatory to get your 'Okay to Board' (OTB) updated by the same source where you obtained your visa.

Here's how it works: after you receive your visa, you must get an 'Okay to Board' status added to your flight booking. This status update serves as proof that you have a valid visa for your destination. Airlines in these countries require this before they allow you to board your flight. Failing to get 'Okay to Board' can result in denied boarding, disrupting your travel plans.

The 'Okay to Board' process is a vital step to ensure that your journey to these destinations is trouble-free. It adds an extra layer of security and confirmation to your travel plans, making certain that your visa is genuine and in order. So, when planning your trip to the UAE, Qatar, Oman, or Bahrain, be sure to consider the 'Okay to Board' requirement and update it alongside your visa application. StampThePassport is here to assist you throughout this procedure, making your travels to these incredible destinations as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Don't let the 'Okay to Board' process catch you by surprise, prepare in advance, and get ready to embark on your exciting journey to these remarkable countries.

Thailand Expands Visa-Free Entry: 93 Nations Now Qualify

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

May 30th, 2024 at 7:26 AM EDT

Thailand's aggressive push to attract tourists through these visa promotions highlights its commitment to reviving the tourism sector and ensuring long-term economic stability.

Peden Doma Bhutia

In an effort to attract more tourists and remote workers, the Thai cabinet this week rolled out a series of new visa promotions, including visa-free and visa-on-arrival schemes, extended stays for students, and reduced compulsory health insurance for retirees.

Starting June 1, the number of countries eligible for visa-free entry to Thailand will increase from 57 to 93. Under the new scheme, visitors can stay in Thailand for up to 60 days, compared to the earlier limit of 30 days.

The countries eligible for visa-free stays include key tourism markets like China and India, as well as U.S., UK, Albania, UAE, Cambodia, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mexico, Morocco, Panama, Romania, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan.

The Thai cabinet has also approved visa-on-arrival for 31 countries, up from the previous 19. This list includes Armenia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Fiji and Malta

Government spokesperson Chai Wacharonke emphasized the importance of tourism to Thailand’s national economy and its role in job creation. From January to May 26 this year, Thailand recorded 14.3 million tourists and aims to reach a record 40 million foreign arrivals for the full year, with an expected revenue of THB 3.5 trillion ($95.73 billion).

In comparison, 2019 saw a record 39.9 million arrivals, generating THB 1.91 trillion in revenue.

New Measures for Students and Digital Nomads

In a bid to retain talent, postgraduate students will now be able to stay in Thailand for an additional year after graduation, provided they obtain certification from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation.

This extension aims to help foreign students secure employment in the country. According to Wacharonke currently there are approximately 40,000 such students in Thailand

Digital nomads will also benefit from the new visa policies. The “Destination Thailand Visa” will now be valid for five years, allowing a 180-day maximum stay per visit, extendable for another 180 days, with another THB 10,000 ($270) fee.

Previously, digital nomads were entitled to only two 30-day stays. Wacharonke noted that this measure targets remote workers, freelancers, and those interested in learning Muay Thai and Thai cuisine.

Eased Requirements for Retirees

Retirees aged 50 years or more seeking long-stay visas will benefit from reduced health insurance requirements. Currently, these visitors must have health insurance coverage worth THB 3 million ($82,000). The requirement is now lowered to THB 440,000 ($12,000), effective for applicants from September to December. Additionally, the cabinet approved the expansion of e-visa application services at Thai consulates and embassies, increasing from 47 to 94 locations starting in September.

Targeting Key Source Markets

China and India are among the largest and most important source markets for global tourism, and Thailand is keen to capture the interest of travelers from these countries.

Data firm ForwardKeys noted a 212% surge in travel from China to Kazakhstan during this year’s Labor Day holiday, with notable increases to Singapore, Azerbaijan, Malaysia, and the Maldives, following the relaxation of visa policies.

While Thailand and China have agreed on a reciprocal permanent visa exemption , Skift had earlier reported that Thailand’s slower recovery is attributed to ongoing safety concerns.

India is also a critical market for Thailand , being the fastest-growing source of tourists. In 2023, over 1.6 million Indian travelers visited Thailand, making it the fourth-largest source market for the country. These tourists contributed more than THB 63 billion ($1.7 billion) in spending.

In November last year, Thailand decided to grant visa-free entry to Indian citizens from November 10 till May this year. The Thai cabinet this month approved a plan to extend the visa exemption for six more months.

UAE immigration authorities intensify scrutiny on 'Visit Visa' holders, check the new guidelines here

The new guidelines now require travellers to carry or have access to 3,000 dirhams (approximately inr 68,000) for one-month visas..

  • Updated May 24, 2024, 5:27 PM IST

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has ramped up airport inspections and screenings to identify individuals arriving on Visit Visas

In recent developments, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has ramped up airport inspections and screenings to identify individuals arriving on Visit Visas who may be seeking employment opportunities. According to the reports, immigration officials have heightened scrutiny at UAE airports, particularly focusing on passengers hailing from Kottayam and Idukki districts in Kerala where inadequate travel documentation has led to detainments and travel disruptions.

  • Massive drop in visa applications for UK healthcare sector after govt crackdown on India workers

In response to similar cases, airlines have received directives mandating strict enforcement of documentation requirements, including the financial buffer stipulation.

What are the new guidelines?

- The new guidelines now require travellers to carry or have access to 3,000 dirhams (approximately INR 68,000) for one-month visas

- Travellers need to have 5,000 dirhams for longer stays, with credit card equivalents meeting these thresholds also accepted

- Non-compliance with these regulations could lead to fines of 5,000 dirhams per passenger imposed on airlines for individuals lacking the necessary documents upon arrival in the UAE.

- Moreover, according to the reports, passengers holding tourist visas must present hotel reservation documents and have a financial buffer of 5,000 dirhams (approximately INR 1.3 lakh) for expenses, in addition to valid visas and return tickets.

Failure to meet these criteria has resulted in denied boarding for many passengers, even after providing visa details, contact information, and local addresses. Those affected by the cancellations faced challenges such as non-refundable tickets, inability to reschedule, and extended waits at the airport before their return journey.

The intensified inspections were initiated at Kochi and Kozhikode airports in Kerala, resulting in the detention of multiple passengers who failed to meet the necessary documentation requirements. Reports indicate that over 20 travellers were prevented from boarding flights at Cochin International Airport, while up to five individuals were denied travel daily at Calicut International Airport. Consequently, around 30 passengers in Kozhikode had to cancel their travel plans in light of the stringent scrutiny measures.

Furthermore, Dubai immigration authorities have issued specific guidelines for visitors holding tourist visas, emphasising the prohibition of employment activities, verification of accommodation arrangements, and scrutiny of available funds to cover expenses.

Visitors on employment visas must complete visa procedures promptly upon entry for legal work authorisation, while tourists engaging in leisure activities must provide detailed information on their accommodation, return tickets, and financial capabilities.

Overall, the heightened scrutiny on visit visa holders underscores the UAE's commitment to regulating entry and ensuring compliance with visa conditions, particularly in light of job-seeking concerns among certain passenger demographics.
