Pancheros has announced a winner of the " Iowa queso cruise ."

The challenge? Visit all 26 Pancheros locations in Iowa within 24 hours.

The reward? Fifty-two free burritos — essentially one per week for a full year.

Jared Ness was up for the challenge.

"I figured, screw it, I'm going to be home for two weeks. So I like, pack all my stuff for two weeks, like super fast, and I got out the door," Ness said.

Ness' coworker, Alex Gookin, actually created the challenge.

Gookin did the math on X , formerly known as Twitter, to see if it was possible to stop at every single Pancheros location in Iowa in one day.

Gookin found that you could pull it off, but it's no easy feat.

Do it, you won't 👀First person in Iowa to do this gets free burritos for a year 😇 https://t.co/FkBKMCxqSu — Pancheros (@pancheros) December 13, 2023

Pancheros took notice, released official rules, and the "Iowa queso cruise" was born.

It's "nacho" average road trip, but Ness said it was worth every mile.

"I won't be eating any more burritos than I already do. This is simply paying for the one burrito I get every week," Ness said.

‼️ WE HAVE A WINNER‼️ @J21Ness has successfully taken a photo at every Pancheros location in Iowa in under 24 hours! Please send him your many congratulations on this incredibly impressive feat 🌯😎🎉 pic.twitter.com/6skyEbbOot — Pancheros (@pancheros) December 16, 2023

The Very Slow Restart of G.M.’s Cruise Driverless Car Business

An incident that seriously injured a pedestrian in San Francisco led Cruise to take all of its cars off the road. The question now is when they will return.

A white compact car, with cameras and other equipment mounted on its roof and no driver behind the wheel, is shown on an urban street.

By Yiwen Lu

Reporting from Warren, Mich., and Mountain View, Calif.

At a sprawling complex in Warren, Mich., General Motors’ hopes for its driverless car future play out in a virtual reality headset offered to visitors.

In a video, the electric and autonomous car drives itself. Wirelessly connected to traffic lights and the surrounding streets, the car avoids collisions and reduces congestion, part of what G.M. calls its “0-0-0” vision — “zero crashes, zero emission, zero congestion.”

At least, that’s the plan. G.M.’s driverless future looks a lot further away today than it did a year ago, when Cruise, G.M.’s driverless car subsidiary, was deep into an aggressive expansion of its robot taxi services, testing in 15 cities across 10 states.

On Oct. 2, a Cruise driverless car hit and dragged a pedestrian for 20 feet on a San Francisco street, causing severe injuries. Weeks later, the California Department of Motor Vehicles accused Cruise of omitting the dragging from a video of the incident that was initially provided to the agency and suspended the company’s license in the state.

In November, Cruise voluntarily paused all operations across the country after facing widespread criticism that it was neglecting safety as it expanded its driverless taxi service. Cruise also pushed out nine executives, its chief executive stepped down , and the company laid off a quarter of its work force.

Now comes the hard part: Rebuilding a ruined reputation. In recent interviews with The New York Times, the three executives now running Cruise say they are in no rush to get back on the road. After learning the hard way about the risks of moving too fast with a cutting-edge technology, Cruise has slowed its breakneck development to a crawl to avoid another major mishap.

“For a long time before, Cruise was really moving fast and other competitors were not,” said Craig Glidden, who became president and chief administrative officer of Cruise in November. Now, he said, safety is Cruise’s “North Star.”

But going slow means the company risks falling far behind its top rivals. Waymo, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has had driverless taxis operating in the Phoenix area since 2020 and San Francisco since late 2022 without serious incidents, and it recently expanded to Los Angeles . Zoox , an Amazon subsidiary, has been testing a steering-wheel-free robot taxi in Las Vegas since last June.

“Catching up with Waymo technologically is going to take three to five years at best,” said Alex Roy, a consultant and former executive in the autonomous car industry. He added that it was even harder for Cruise to catch up commercially because Waymo was “generating revenues with trust that Cruise never earned.”

Some industry observers were surprised G.M. didn’t shut down Cruise after its public meltdown late last year. Since acquiring the company in 2016, G.M. has spent over $8 billion on its driverless subsidiary. Cruise lost $3.48 billion last year, and another $519 million over the first three months of 2024.

“I was thinking in the late part of 2023 and into early 2024 that the most likely outcome was that they were going to completely turn off Cruise,” said Reilly Brennan, a partner at Trucks Venture Capital, which invests in the future of transportation.

But after slashing $1 billion from Cruise’s 2024 budget, Mary T. Barra, G.M.’s chief executive, reiterated her commitment to the company during earnings calls. In April, she told investors that Cruise had made “tangible progress,” although G.M. is exploring different options to fund the business, including taking outside investments.

After Cruise’s former chief executive and co-founder Kyle Vogt resigned in November, G.M. appointed two presidents who report to its board: Mo Elshenawy, previously the company’s executive vice president of engineering, and Mr. Glidden, who also serves as G.M.’s general counsel. In February, Cruise hired Steve Kenner, a veteran product safety executive, as chief safety officer.

The three executives all decide on safety decisions, such as when to take the next step in deployment. Those calls, Mr. Kenner said, have to be unanimous.

So far, Cruise has taken baby steps back to the road. In April, it picked Phoenix, the home to its operations center, to be the first city to restart testing with human drivers. On May 13, after a month of driving a handful of vehicles in order to understand local road features, Cruise transitioned into supervised autonomous testing , with two safety drivers per vehicle.

Cruise used to say its robot taxis were, on average, safer than a human driver. But so-called edge cases — incidents like road construction or erratic cyclists that humans can intuitively react to — bedeviled the robot taxis. Mr. Elshenawy said the cars had improved their navigation of construction zones and how they deal with emergency vehicles.

Cruise hopes to offer driverless ride-hailing service in one city by the end of 2024, while operating with safety drivers in fewer than five cities, Mr. Glidden said. That is, if the edge case issue can be improved.

While Mr. Elshenawy’s engineering team works to improve the technology, Mr. Glidden and Mr. Kenner have been traveling across the country to meet with regulators. Cruise has met with local officials and state regulators in Arizona, Texas and California, as well as with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It has also spoken with several cities in the Southeast where it previously tested its fleet.

In California, Cruise has answered questions from state regulators about driverless testing, but it is unclear if or when it could regain a permit. The talent pool in Silicon Valley is essential to Cruise’s business, so executives say they are committed to staying in the state.

Whether Cruise’s cautious approach restores faith in the company among regulators is an open question. Dave Cortese, a California state senator representing Silicon Valley, said the autonomous vehicle industry’s aggressive testing on public roads in the past had “created tension and distrust.”

For the company to win over regulators, it needs a “profound demonstration of transparency” to demonstrate that an incident like Oct. 2 will not happen again, said Mr. Roy, the consultant.

“We may not agree, but I think there are lots of places where we do agree,” said Tilly Chang, executive director of San Francisco County Transportation Authority. “But it is also unclear to us what it would take for them to get reinstated.”

Driverless Cars and the Future of Transportation

A Very Slow Restart: An incident that seriously injured a pedestrian in San Francisco led Cruise, G.M.’s driverless car subsidiary, to take all of its cars off the road. The question now is when they will return .

An Appetite for Destruction: A wave of lawsuits argue that Tesla’s Autopilot software is dangerously overhyped. What can its blind spots teach us about Elon Musk, the company’s erratic chief executive ?

Along for the Ride: Here’s what New York Times reporters experienced during test rides in driverless cars operated by Tesla , Waymo  and Cruise .

The Future of Transportation?: Driverless cars, once a Silicon Valley fantasy, have become a 24-hour-a-day reality in San Francisco . “The Daily” looked at the unique challenges of coexisting with cars that drive themselves .

Stressing Cities: In San Francisco and Austin, Texas, where passengers can hail autonomous taxis, the vehicles are starting to take a toll on city services , even slowing down emergency response times.

Cruise: Driving the future of autonomous electric vehicles

Cruise autonomous vehicles. Credit | Cruise

Founded in 2013 in San Francisco, US, Cruise fulfils CEO Kyle Vogt ’s childhood dream of making self-driving cars a reality. Co-founded by Chief Product Officer Dan Kan , the company was acquired by General Motors in 2016 to bring more than a century of experience in designing and manufacturing vehicles to the autonomous vehicle (AV) effort.

Cruise has received $10B from well-respected companies and investors—including General Motors, Honda, Microsoft, T. Rowe Price, and Walmart—increasing its valuation 30x since being founded.

The Origin robotaxi — launched in early 2020 — is a bus-like vehicle built for the sole purpose of shuttling people around in a city autonomously.

In its first 15 months, Cruise AVs collectively drove one million driverless miles — a distance equivalent to more than 40 laps around the planet.

The fleet is all-electric, fuelled by electricity generated by solar panels, many in Californian farms as part of the Farm to Fleet programme that aims to bridge and boost transport and agriculture in the US, promoting renewable energy and increasing benefits for the companies.

“The amount of development work to get from nothing to the level of performance to operate without a driver was enormous,” says Vogt.

“We still have a long way to go to generalise this, to make this work at massive scale everywhere. But the relative difficulty of that compared to doing the work that is already behind us is pretty small. And it’s do-able.

“We know what the bottlenecks are, like our mapping technology. If you told me tomorrow we needed to operate in 100 cities, we’d be in trouble. But we have a road map so that, by the time we are adding 20, 30 or 50 cities a year, the technology is there to support that.”

Boosting the community

In partnership with the National Federation of the Blind , Cruise is making cars that can be accessed independently by blind people, eliminating a critical accessibility barrier.

During the height of the COVID-19 restrictions, Cruise repurposed its AV fleet to deliver meals to vulnerable people in the San Francisco area, alongside partnering with Walmart   on a self-driving delivery pilot in Arizona.

In partnership with nonprofits, the Cruise for Good programme is dedicated to providing at least 1% of the Cruise self-driving fleet to serving important community needs in every city, delivering meals and providing rides to vulnerable populations to build a more equitable transportation ecosystem.

Sydney sweeney drops $70k on beach vehicle for her new $13.5m florida estate.

Sydney Sweeney’s Floridian vibes are “Immaculate.”

The “Euphoria” star has purchased a nearly $70,000 beach vehicle to go with her new $13.5 million oceanfront estate in the Florida Keys, Page Six has confirmed.

Sweeney bought the Fiat 500 Jolly, which is a cross between a golf cart and a dune buggy, from Hampton Jollys in Greenwich, Conn., and dropped $68,500 on the ride, a rep for the company tells us. The cruiser comes in 10 different colors, but the “Anyone but You” actress opted for the sky blue, which will complement the ocean on which her house sits.

The company’s rides are designed using a classic Fiat 500 from 1965-1967, which then undergo a full-body overhaul to meet their Jolly specifications.

TMZ was the first to report the news of Sweeney’s purchase.

Page Six reported Thursday that Sweeney, 26, snagged the compound for $4.5 million less than its asking price. The 7,720-square-foot home, which is located about 30 minutes from Key West, features six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a chef’s kitchen, a 520-bottle wine room, a 330-gallon aquarium, an elevator, a home gym, a game room and carport parking.

Photos obtained by Page Six show the manse also includes an infinity pool with a swim-up bar and a jacuzzi. Sweeney’s new property sits on a large piece of land, which will provide her and her guests plenty of privacy when they head to the Sunshine State.

It’s unclear whether Sweeney purchased the house on her own or if it’s a shared investment with her 40-year-old fiancé, Jonathan Davino.

Although she appears to be spending a lot of time in Florida, Sweeney will remain bi-coastal as she purchased her first property, a $3 million Tudor-style home in California, in 2021.

“I always thought that when I turned 18, I’d have all this money and I’d buy back my parents’ house and put them all back together again. And I never was able to, and I never did,” she  told the Associated Press  that December.

“So now being able to be in a house is such an incredible, humbling, amazing accomplishment that I still can’t believe I was able to pull off.”

Sweeney appears to have become a passionate real estate investor, as she also purchased a Bel-Air, Calif., fixer-upper for $6.2 million last year despite claiming she was cash poor.

“If I wanted to take a six-month break, I don’t have income to cover that,” the rising sex symbol  told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022. “I don’t have someone supporting me, I don’t have anyone I can turn to, to pay my bills or call for help.”

The “Madame Web” actress suggested her campaign deals with Miu Miu ,  Laneige  and  Armani beauty  pay her more than her day job.

“The established stars still get paid, but I have to give five percent to my lawyer, 10 percent to my agents, three percent or something like that to my business manager,” the  Emmy-nominated  star explained.

“I have to pay my publicist every month, and that’s more than my mortgage,” Sweeney continued. “If I just acted, I wouldn’t be able to afford my life in LA. I take deals because I have to.”

So Many Cruise Ship Passengers Barfed On A United Flight The Plane Had To Be Taken Out Of Service

Thirty of the 75 cruise ship passengers onboard the 737 max 8 experienced flu-like symptoms and puked everywhere. oof..

Sick woman with nausea in the airplane.

More than two dozen passengers on a United Airlines from Vancouver to Houston who were previously on a cruise puked so much on the plane that it had to be taken out of service for deep cleaning . No, this isn’t the plot of “Airplane!”

Thirty of the 75 cruise passengers onboard the United 737 Max 8 started puking their guts up after getting flu-like symptoms in the middle of their flight to the Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston . We can only assume it ruined the experience of the 163 passengers and six crew members on board. They were met with emergency responders on the ground, according to the Daily Mail . Three of the pukers were evaluated at the scene, but it was determined that none of them required medical attention. Now, the plane has been pulled from United’s rotation as it undergoes a very-needed deep cleaning.

USA Today spoke with United about the incident, and this is what the airline had to say:

“Several passengers who had been on the same cruise and did not feel well were on United Flight 1528 from Vancouver to Houston Friday night,” United told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. The airline did not answer a question about what cruise line or ship the flyers had been traveling on before their flight. “United Airlines is actively coordinating with health authorities to address the situation,” the airline’s statement continued. “As a precautionary measure, the aircraft will be removed from service and go through a deep cleaning before returning to service. Ensuring the health and safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority.”

This is just the latest instance of air travel being an absolute nightmare. We’ve recently reported on how turbulence is actually getting worse , a naked man running through the isle of a Virgin Australia flight , an engine fire leading to a Boeing plane needing to make an emergency landing and a SEPARATE plane vomiting story where 70 passengers got sick. This has all happened in the last month.

Massillon's car show back with classic vehicles, sun and crowd

MASSILLON − To say people were excited for the return of Massillon's downtown car show on Saturday would be an understatement.

When the show kicked off at noon Saturday, a throng of spectators was ready to check out music, food vendors − and hot rods.

The show returned this year as the renamed Massillon Cruise-In & Music Festival . Formerly known for more than three decades as the Cruise-On-In & Dance Party, it most recently was held in 2019.

The Kennett family of Wayne County, two strollers and a toddler in tow, were happy to see it return.

“Prior to COVID-19, we would come here all the time to enjoy the cars and music. We are so happy to see that it’s back in a new format,” said David Kennett. “It’s a family-friendly event, and the kids get such a kick out of seeing the cars – especially the modified hot rods!”

Butch Stauffer, Paul Cattel, and Jamie Byrd, all from Canton, have been collecting cars since the 1970s.

“We never grew up. We love hot rods,” said Cattel.

The trio and three additional friends all were showing cars and were happy to see the event return in any format.

“We would come here every Saturday night and park in the same six spots before they shut it all down in 2019. We’re so glad it’s back,” Cattel added.

Kids + summer = camps: Avoid the summer slide. Here are 5 educational summer camps for kids in Stark County

The crowds strolled multiple blocked off downtown streets, with the majority of cars, trucks and motorcycles at Lincoln Way between First Street NE and Third Street NE.

As the event kicked off, collectors greeted old friends, and checked out each other’s newest acquisitions.

Street food vendors lined City Hall Street SE at Lincoln Way E, and people chose freshly squeezed lemonade, gyros, kettle corn, ice cream, fries and more. Those seeking a change of pace stopped in at the Greatness Café at Massillon Museum for a premium smoothie.

On display were vehicles in every shape, color and style, original and customized. A quick glimpse brought into sight a 1951 Hudson, a variety of Volkswagen Beetles, some old school modified hot rods, a 1950 Cadillac, a 2020 Lamborghini, Chevrolet Bel Airs and a 1964 Ducati Motorcycle.

Of course, there was a large collection of Corvettes – spanning the newest model back through a baby blue 1956 and a bright orange 1957. It's no wonder so many were on hand − Stark County's Corvette Club is one of the largest in the United States.

Donna Ely from Massillon, with her friend Craig Taylor, were showcasing their 1978 Pontiac Firebird “Red Bird Edition.” Ely purchased the car new.

“At the time I purchased it, it only had four miles on it. I stored it, and it’s always fun to bring it to car shows,” she said.

Inside Kozmo’s Grille , DeeDee Kimbel of Akron was getting a drink with a group of friends.

“This is perfect," she said. "We can enjoy a drink, walk the (new) DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) , and enjoy the events.”

Jake and Mandy Smithers of Medina Township are classic car collectors who chose not to display one of their vehicles at this year's show.

“We wanted to see what it would look like, how organized and well-attended it was," Jake Smithers said. They were pleased. “If it returns, we’ll definitely participate."

Comedy was on the agenda for Lyle Pennington of Youngstown. He was heading to Krackpots Comedy Club .

“I love a good laugh," Pennington said. "The cool cars and perfect weather are just a bonus.”

Frannie Garcia of Canal Fulton was admiring a 1967 Dodge Charger.

“My boyfriend had one of these," she said. "We had a lot of fun in that car.”

Massillon revved up for inaugural Cruise-in & Music Festival after 5-year car show layoff

queso cruise car

  • A daylong car show is returning to downtown Massillon on Saturday.
  • The new show, called the Massillon Cruise-in & Music Festival, is to include three live music acts, multiple food vendors and comedy.
  • The free event is slated to run from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday.

MASSILLON – A shoutout to vintage car buffs: It's almost time to start revving those engines for a new weekend classic.

An inaugural car show — dubbed the Massillon Cruise-In & Music Festival — is ready to launch on Saturday. It replaces the  Cruise-On-In & Dance Party , which hasn't been held since 2019 originally due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Roll time: Massillon's revamped car show to feature music & food vendors but no fireworks

The free car show is slated to run from noon to 9 p.m. along multiple downtown blocks. Lincoln Way between First Street NW and Third Street NE is the primary area.

Mayor Jamie Slutz said the goal is to attract 300 or more cars to the show, and many more people, to downtown.

"This will be something fun for people to do in the community," said Slutz. "There will be plenty of food and entertainment to enjoy, too."

For three decades, the former Cruise-On-In event had been billed as one of Ohio's largest car shows, featuring muscle and sports cars, classic vehicles and trucks, live entertainment, food trucks and fireworks. It drew thousands to downtown Massillon annually.

Musical acts in line to perform Saturday are  New Wave Nation , a 1980s tribute band, and the  Jimmie Jack Band , 1990s alternative rockers, and 3 A.M. Summer of '69. Live music is slated to start at 3 p.m. on Duncan Plaza . Family-style comedy is slated between musical sets.

Krackpots hosting comedians at Duncan Plaza, free comedy at club during Saturday car show

Chris Ketler, owner of Krackpots Comedy Club , 14 Lincoln Way W, said six to eight comedians will take the Duncan Plaza amphitheater stage during afternoon music breaks.

Free comedy at Krackpots is also slated from noon to 4 p.m., according to Ketler, who called the Massillon Cruse-In a boon for downtown.

"It's exciting for the car show to be back," he said. "The show is a destination, and will bring in people from afar."

Jeff Doll, owner of  Jeff's Motor Cars  and  Chloe's Diner , 112 First St. NE, is a main car show sponsor. He said many cars will be parked along side streets connected to Lincoln Way.

Additional car show sponsors are  Progressive Chevrolet  and  Heitger Funeral Service .  Sharchione Auto Gallery  is also bringing in a number of sport and show cars for public viewing.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE 2024-26 GUIDE

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the  destinations  you sail to and the  shore excursions  available at each port, to a full range of  entertainment  and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.
