Traveler Reviews

Had the lunch included as well as the trip behind the falls. Very well organised, except at the Sheraton the waiter squeezed 6 strangers onto one table half with no view, despite 90 percent of the restaurant being empty. Main buffet was lovely but the desserts were forgettable. Definitely would do this trip again but be assertive about seating if they aren’t full. Chester the guide and yuri the driver were fabulous.

amazing experience. the tour was designed perfectly. no delays anywhere. the helicopter and the whistleblower experience was out of the world. the buffet lunch at Shereton was delicious. our tour guide Chester and driver Don were very friendly and cordial. overall worth the experience at a reasonable price.

A great trip which covers not only Niagara but also Niagara on the Lake. A hidden gem.The visit to the vineyard was a pleasant surprise and got to taste the fabulous Ice wine. A great day

I would highly recommend this trip. We had Don as our driver and Judy as our guide. Got to see all the sites listed and had time enough at each. The trip on the Hornblower was particularly good. Judy made the trip interesting and funny. A lovely lady.

Enjoyed everything. Knowledgeable tour guide, smooth hotel pickup, enough time to see the fall from different angles, okay lunch buffet, nice visit to the town and winery.

This was my third time at Niagara Falls but my first with grayline. It was so much easier and fun to let someone else make all the arrangements. Loved our tour guide Judy.

This is a great day out. Judy, our guide was very professional and informative. The falls are awesome and I would recommend the helicopter ride. Would recommend 100%

Tour guide was friendly. We got to see a lot of attractions including the whirlpool, Niagara Falls, Niagara on the lake village, and a winery.

we loved the tour. the pick up from our hotel was about 45 min late and we called the operator a few times but the delay was due to the traffic. The driver was nice and apologized for the delay. The trip overall was great: we enjoyed the ride, the boat trip to the fall and lunch. The room where they served lunch had a great view of the Fall. We would recommend it to our friends and all who plans to visit the Falls.

I would definitely recommend this trip. We'll worth the money. Our tour guide Judy was brilliant she made the day really fun and was very knowledgeable. The trip also offered an opportunity to take a helicopter ride over the falls at an additional cost. Overall the trip was a great day out and offered a fantastic service. Don't hesitate to book.

From Toronto to Niagara Falls: 5 Best Ways to Get There

Written by Michael Law Updated May 11, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Niagara Falls is a must-see when visiting Toronto, and fortunately, it's close by and easy to get to on a day trip or overnight excursion. The trip can be accomplished in a variety of ways: you can drive, take a tour, take a bus, take a train, or take a train/bus combo.

Niagara Falls

The drive via the Gardiner and Queen Elizabeth Highways is fast and easy, with the 130-kilometer trip taking about 80 minutes outside of rush hour. The route is all on divided highways and is well-signposted and easy to follow.

The Mega Bus takes two hours, the train takes two hours and six minutes, and train/bus combos take a bit longer at two hours, 40 minutes. However, you'll need to tack on a bit of time for the public transit options at the destination, as the bus station in Niagara Falls is about four kilometers from the actual falls. A scenic walk, taxi, local WEGO bus, or rideshare will be required to get you to your ultimate destination.

On This Page:

  • From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Car
  • From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Tour
  • From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Megabus
  • From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Train
  • From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Train & Bus

1. From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Car

Niagara Falls in autumn

If you have your own car, traveling from Toronto to Niagara Falls provides the greatest flexibility. You can leave and return when you want and easily visit sights located away from the falls themselves.

The route from Toronto couldn't be simpler. All you have to do is get on the elevated Gardiner Expressway and head west toward Niagara Falls. The highway changes names at the Highway 427 Interchange , but no action is required, just keep going straight.

One of the highlights of the trip is the Burlington Skyway at the far western edge of Lake Ontario. As you climb this impressive bridge, be sure to soak up the views to your left back towards Toronto. On a clear day, you'll be able to see the downtown towers. On your right are the Hamilton steelworks, with their trademark bellowing smoke and flames.

The road continues onwards to Niagara Falls, passing through St. Catharines and up over the Garden City Skyway. From here, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the spray cloud of Niagara Falls. Off to your right is the Welland Canal with its impressive lock systems. If you are lucky, you'll see a ship transiting.

From this point, Niagara Falls is fairly near, so keep an eye out for the exit for Highway 420 . Take this exit, and then eventually take the exit for Falls Avenue . This will take you to the Niagara Parkway and the falls themselves.

A series of large parking lots are located on your right-hand side. Parking here is expensive. If you don't mind a walk to the falls, park at the free lot near Clifton Hill. It's located off Stanley Avenue/RR 102 on Ferry/Victoria Avenue.

After you've seen the falls, check out some of the other attractions in and around Niagara Falls including Clifton Hill, the Floral Clock, or the Butterfly Conservatory. Other popular things to do in Niagara Falls include a boat ride to the foot of the falls with Niagara City Cruises or a trip down into the tunnels behind the falls.

A nice option for your return trip to Toronto is to go via Niagara-on-the-Lake. It's one of Ontario's most romantic towns and has a wonderfully restored historical main street full of shops and restaurants.

2. From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Tour

Tour boat at Niagara Falls

If you are staying in Toronto and don't have your own transport, the best way to visit Niagara Falls is on a tour. All the logistics, parking, admission fees, and meals are coordinated and taken care of, all you need to do is show up on time for your hotel pickup (included).

One of the best tours, limited to 12 people for maximum enjoyment, is the Luxury Small-Group Niagara Falls Day Trip from Toronto with Cruise . The tour is a full day and takes on average between 9 to 10 hours.

You'll follow the same driving route mentioned above, and your guide will provide you with background and information on the sights you'll see along the way. In town, your tour includes a wet and wonderful ride on the Niagara City Cruise ship (Formerly Hornblower Cruises) to the foot of the falls. You'll also be able to see the falls from the top; the viewing area at Table Rock is less than two meters from where the water tumbles over the edge to the chasm below.

Just up from Table Rock, and recently opened after a multi-million-dollar restoration, is the historic Niagara Falls Power Station. This brand-new attraction in town is well worth a visit for architecture buffs, science fans, and those with an adventurous mindset.

Once you've had your fill of Niagara Fall's natural attractions, take a wander up Clifton Hill for some seriously wacky entertainment.

Three hours after arriving in Niagara Falls, you'll depart the falls and stop at the Floral Clock . The next stop is the beautiful and historic small town of Niagara-on the Lake . Here, you can indulge in a bit of shopping, snacking, or just strolling up and down the main street. The tour then departs and heads back to Toronto where you'll be dropped at your hotel.

3. From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Megabus

Aerial view of Niagara Falls

Taking the Megabus from Toronto to Niagara Falls is the most economical option. MegaBus has six departures daily at 8:45am, 10:45am, 12:45pm, 2:45pm, 4:45pm, and 7:45pm. The cost of this option is almost the same as taking the train and bus option below but is approximately 40 minutes faster and is direct. The MegaBus leaves from Union Station in downtown Toronto.

The only downside to the bus option is that the Niagara Falls bus station is four kilometers from The Falls. However, if you don't mind a bit of exercise, one upside to this is that you can do the walk along pleasant paved pathways that run beside the scenic Niagara Gorge with the Niagara River roaring below.

Don't feel like walking? Just grab a rideshare service or a taxi for the short jaunt, or hop on the WEGO local bus service (Green Line), which has a stop at the bus station. The local bus passes right by all the main attractions.

4. From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Train

Tourists at Horseshoe Falls, Ontario, Canada

In the past, a train and bus combo through GoTransit was the only way to make this work. However, the good news for travelers is that you can now take the train all the way to Niagara Falls without a transfer to a bus. This new route leaves at 10:07am and 5:07pm and takes two hours and six minutes .

The ride on the train is relaxing and fast. It shaves almost an hour off the train and bus combo listed below. The train-only option also avoids all of Toronto's legendary traffic snarls.

The only downside is that, like the bus option, the train arrives at the GO Station approximately four kilometers from the falls. However, as mentioned above, you can walk along the river to the falls, grab a taxi or a rideshare, or hop on the local WEGO bus (Green Line). Combo tickets that include your train trip and local WEGO bus are available.

Two trains return to Toronto from Niagara Falls daily at 1:07pm and 8:07pm. An ideal day would be to catch the 10:07 train, enjoy Niagara Falls at a leisurely pace, enjoy dinner overlooking the falls at The Keg (reservations strongly recommended), and then catch the 8:07 train back to Toronto.

5. From Toronto to Niagara Falls by Train and Bus Combo

Trains in Toronto

This option is super convenient, with departures almost hourly. It's a pleasant and relaxing train ride for half the route and a coach ride for the balance. The GoTransit route involves a change from train to bus in Burlington, the change from one mode to another is only a short walk.

As mentioned above, like the train, the coach portion of this trip arrives into the Niagara Falls bus station, four kilometers from the actual waterfall. The GoTransit train leaves from Union Station in the heart of downtown Toronto.

The price of the train/bus combo is competitive with the MegaBus option listed above.

Niagara Falls New York vs Canada - Things to Do on Each Side of the Falls

O ne of the seven natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls is likely on the bucket list of most families . Regardless of whether you spend time exploring Niagara Falls from Niagara Falls NY or Niagara Falls, Ontario it’s still incredibly impressive.

But families planning a visit to Niagara Falls might wonder: Is it better to explore Niagara Falls New York vs Canada or the other way around?

We wondered that ourselves. So we put Trekaroo writers and contributors to work to determine the best vantage point for viewing this amazing natural wonder! Here’s everything you need to know about choosing where to see Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls New York vs. Canada

Getting to niagara falls.

The four westernmost Great Lakes feed into the Niagara River before heading over the falls and eventually into Lake Ontario. The falls drop a crazy amount of water- 681,750 gallons per second flowing over Horseshoe Falls to be precise. Falling at speeds of 32 feet per second and creating 2,509 tons of force, visiting Niagara Falls is an experience your family won’t ever forget.

From the United States side, getting to Niagara Falls NY is a breeze. Buffalo, NY is only 19 miles from Niagara Falls State Park . From the Canadian side, getting there is a bit trickier. The closest big city is Toronto, 85 miles away from the Falls. If you are planning on spending time in Toronto, check out our picks for the Top 10 Things to do in Toronto with kids .

Renting a car and driving this distance is pretty simple. Many families from the Canadian side choose to take tour buses that pick you up and drop you back off at your hotel.

My family LOVED our tour with King Tours in Toronto . They picked us up and returned us directly to our hotel room; we explored the Falls, visited nearby Niagara-on-the-Lake, and even went wine tasting. The kids made friends on the bus and mom and dad loved not having to drive back in Toronto traffic. Check out King Tours when making your tour reservation .

Winner – Niagara Falls New York . Getting to and from the Falls is much quicker on the US side, plus, you can squeeze in a visit to Fort Niagara- a 300-year-old US fort.

Niagara Falls New York vs Canada- Boat Ride to the Falls

No matter which side of the border you are on, boat tours are offered that take families to all three falls (Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil). This experience is one that can’t be missed! There is nothing like feeling the “mist” of the water encompassing everything all around you. It is a family-travel memory I will honestly never forget.

Niagara City Cruises operates on the Canadian side while Maid of the Mist has been offering tours on the American side since the 1800s. Both tours include ponchos.

Tours are 20 minutes long and both tours operate seasonally (typically April-November). Niagara City Cruises typically extends its season through the end of November. Prices are similar, and both operators offer similar package deals.

Winner –  Niagara Falls Ontario, Canada . Niagara City Cruises offers the only nighttime tours of the Falls. (yay water fireworks!)

Here is a guide to visiting Niagara Falls Canada in winter .

Niagara Falls New York vs. Canada- Best View of the Falls and How to Walk There!

Both the US and Canadian sides of the Falls offer a Journey Behind the Falls walking tour , an additional option for those looking to get up close to the falls. Both also feature spectacular views of the falls up close. The panoramic views on each tour are very similar, with rock cutouts behind Horseshoe Falls and observation decks to view from water level (and get soaked upon!).

The US boasts another tour, Cave of the Winds , which oddly enough doesn’t go through any caves. This walking tour takes families down 175 feet to the “Hurricane Deck” next to Bridal Veil Falls. This tour is the closest (and wettest) you’ll get to the Falls on foot. They even provide souvenir sandals so your shoes don’t get soaked!

Winner – Niagara Falls, New York . Cave of the Winds is an experience all in itself.

Ready to explore more of New York? Check out our picks for the Top 10 Things to do in New York State with Kids .

Other Things to Do in Niagara Falls New York vs Canada

Although most visitors to the area come for the boat and walking tours, there are quite a few other things to do while visiting the Falls.

Things to Do in Nature Niagara Falls, NY

On the New York side, exploring the Falls is all about nature. As part of Niagara Falls State Park , one of the oldest state parks in the US, families can explore the history of the region while discovering the waterfalls themselves.

The Niagara Gorge Discovery Center teaches kids about the geology of the region, including fossils and formations. Kids will love the rock climbing wall and hands-on displays. Marked hikes throughout the park take families past the ruins of the first hydroelectric station, as well as the opportunity to scramble over boulders.

The Adventure Theater , located in the state park visitor center, screens showings of “ Niagara: Miracles, Myths & Magic,” showcasing the history of the Falls. The Niagara Aquarium boasts more than 1500 aquatic animals!

Things to Do in Niagara Falls, Canada

The Canadian side of Niagara Falls, situated in the city of Clifton Hill, is all about adventure. Adrenaline junkies won’t want to miss attractions including WildPlay’s Niagara Falls Zipline to the Falls, a 2,200 foot zipline past the American Falls to the base of Horseshoe Falls.

They also shouldn’t skip the WildPlay Whirlpool Adventure Course suspended above views of the Niagara River. The White Water Walk showcases the power of the water as you tour the river on boardwalks that showcase the Whirlpool Rapids. The Whirlpool Aero Car , which is over 100 years old, suspends families over the Whirlpool rapids in antique style.

Additional Canadian-side attractions include the Butterfly Conservatory , Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens , the Floral Clock , Niagara’s Fury – a  360-degree 4D theatre that showcases the power and history of the Falls, golf, hiking in the nature center, observation tower, and of course, the casinos. Read details of all the Canadian side offerings in our Guide to Visiting Niagara Falls with kids .

Winner – Niagara Falls, Canada for the sheer number of attraction options.

Restaurants & Shopping in Niagara Falls

Both sides of Niagara Falls offer a variety of restaurants and shopping opportunities. On the Canadian side, visitors will find fast food restaurants, family-friendly chains (like the Hard Rock and Rainforest Cafe), casinos, buffets, and lots of souvenir shopping.

The water’s edge along the New York side is actually a state park. The US side feels quite a bit more natural than its neighbor . Just outside the park grounds in the US sits a wealth of restaurants and shopping opportunities. (Another Hard Rock Cafe sits on the American side should you really need to get a pin or t-shirt!)

Want to get fancy? Book a reservation at a restaurant with views of the Falls . The Canadian side boasts a slew of them, including the rotating views at Skylon Tower which sits 775 feet above the Falls. The Keg Steakhouse & Bar,   Table Rock House Restaurant, and Morton’s Grille are also good options.

Winner – Niagara Falls New York. Although we like the options on the Canadian side, we love the natural focus in the US; there are still plenty of restaurants and options for shopping and snacking, but you won’t feel like you are in a tourist trap.

Hotels Near Niagara Falls

On the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, there are plenty of options for families. From kid-friendly resorts like Trekaroo family-favorite Great Wolf Lodge to  Oakes Hotel Overlooking the Falls with impressive views, there is a wide variety of hotel options near the falls and right in the action. If you do choose the Great Wolf Lodge, we have a great article filled with Great Wolf Lodge tips .

The hotel options on the US side of the falls are a bit less plentiful but still diverse. Options include favorite chains like Holiday Inn , DoubleTree by Hilton , Sheraton and Comfort Inn .

Check rates on Niagara Falls hotels — Best Rates Guaranteed.

Niagara Falls Bundled Discounts

The Canadian side of Niagara Falls offers bundled discounts to explore the attractions and activities.

The Niagara Falls Adventure Pass offers three bundles, depending on the activities you hope to do. All passes include WeGo bus passes; visitors can then select attractions based on their interests including nature, classic tours, and plus, which allows admission to nearly everything.

Winner – Niagara Falls Canada . We like that Canada gives us options on what we want to see and experience.  Niagara Falls, New York no longer offers bundled discount passes.

Tips on Crossing the Border at Niagara Falls

If you still can’t decide which side of the falls to see, you could always see both. There are a few options for crossing the border:

Driving across the border:  You can drive across the border at Rainbow Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge (Nexus only), and Lewiston Queenston Bridge.

Trekaroo Tip: Single parents will need a certified letter with permission to cross the border without both parents. If you are caravanning, be sure your kids are in your own vehicle at the border.

Walking across the border: You can also walk or bike across the border on the Rainbow Bridge, a fun option if you don’t want to wait in a line of cars. The same passport rules apply.

Niagara Falls New York vs Canada...which side is better? We offer answers and share lots of things to do on both sides of the falls!
