NEED HELP CHOOSING A VAN?

Choosing your dream caravan can be a difficult process. Noticing this, Roadstar have created a guide to choosing your dream caravan. Click the button below to view our comprehensive online guide.

Image

notgreynomads.com

With a new offroad caravan we can get to more places like this stunning sandy beach camp, Gregory River, QLD. All to ourselves, and all for free

Plans are afoot! A brand new Offroad Caravan is on the horizon for us here at Not Grey Nomads:

Not a new Offroad Caravan, but we still got to Camp alongside the Murray river near Mildura

But circumstances allow us now to buy something new, a custom-built offroad caravan, that will be all ours from day one, and will be the home of our dreams for years to come! We’ve been having a lot of fun looking at all the caravan manufacturer options out there and refining exactly what is important to us in a new van and we think we are pretty close to choosing between our last few shortlisted options. In fact we’ve become quite caravan obsessed, thinking and rethinking every option, inclusion, and potential upgrade, with both of us even waking up, dreaming and thinking about vans!

Roadstar Caravans

Currently in Northern WA, about as far from every caravan dealer and manufacturer in the country as you can get, has meant we haven’t been able to get to see any in the flesh. But the good news is almost every person in the country who has a caravan, who isn’t in lockdown somewhere, is up here with us, (or it feels like it anyway). So we’ve had this constant procession of caravans to view and check out along the way. We’ve found brands we’ve never even heard of before, and been able to see them in action on some of the most reknowned roads in Australia.

Hitched up and ready to move on

For us, the biggest factor in our decision will be the van’s TARE weight. This is the weight of the van, as you get it from the factory or dealer, with none of your stuff (payload) in it. While we can afford a fancy new van, we definitely cannot afford to have to buy a fancy new tow vehicle to be able to legally pull it around as well! After living in our van for 4 years, we have a really good idea of what we need and what we want, but one of the hardest thing to get our heads around since day one, was our legal towing capacity.

It’s like the car manufacturers came up with this figure of 3.5 tonne – Most dual cabs now are “reported” to have this towing capacity – and from then on, caravan manufacturers latched onto that magic 3.5 tonne number and built vans specifically to go up to that ATM weight – ATM being Aggregate Trailer Mass or the total maximum weight your van is allowed to be once you have all your stuff in it, including things like water, gas, food, your bevvies etc.

So technically our ute is allowed to tow up to 3.5 tonne, and the vans are allowed to be up to 3.5 tonne, so you’d think its all good, right? Wrong! The 3.5 tonne capacity of a dual cab ute has been proven to be a bit of a marketing myth. Yes, we could tow a trailer that heavy, IF the car didn’t have anyone in it but the driver and it had no heavy extras on it, such as a bull bar, winch, toolboxes, roofracks or funnily enough, even the towbar and heavy duty suspension upgrades required to be able to tow a trailer as heavy as that!

Understanding your vehicle GVM

The important figures to understand are your GVM and your GCM. Our 2015 Holden Colorado dual cab has a Gross Vehicle Mass of 3125kgs. This is the most the vehicle is allowed to be, on its own, without a caravan hitched up, but carrying us and all our stuff. With the 2 of us, the dog, the fridge and all our standard gear and accesories on it, it is currently about 2900 kgs, which leaves us with just enough wiggle room for the addition of the tow ball weight of the caravan we want to add to the back.

Then the GCM is the overall combined weight of the car AND the fully loaded caravan, combined, which cannot be more than 6000kg’s. You can see right here that if the van actually weighed 3.5 tonne and us and the ute are 2900, we would already be well and truely over our allowable combined weight (by 400kgs!). So our set up is never going to be able to pull a van fully loaded up to 3.5 tonne.

In fact our maximum weight is more like 3000kgs… This is where things gets tricky when looking for a new van. As I said, most manufacturers nowadays seem to have latched onto that magic 3.5t number and that is what they build to. I mean, everyone wants the biggest they can get, with the most inclusions, surely…? After all, we are a society who wants more, more more… right?

Our caravan from above

There are a few cars out there, legitimately capable of towing vans that heavy, but honestly, who has $100k plus to drop on a caravan as well as $150k plus to drop on a 200 series Landcruiser or a big yank tank style pickup truck – well, lots of people apparently from what we see up here travelling the Kimberley, but not us! And if not us, then surely there is still a market out there for solidly built, but lighter weight caravans that mean you can tow safely and legally!

RedARC Power

We’ve been really surprised at how few manufacturers are making any efforts to tap into that section of the market though, with the ‘big is best” mentality seeming to be the most common approach, especially in off-road capable vans. The scary thing is, how many people are being sold these big vans who don’t understand that adding a boat to their roof or even just filling their 3 water tanks, plus their extra drinking water tank means that they are no longer legal, let alone safely pulling that van around. And now we have really started looking, how many are there out there that just simply don’t care! But there must be others out there like us, budget conscious AND weight conscious.

Enerdrive Battery Management

There must be others who understand that part of the joy of caravanning is living with less, living more simply and minimally, and that you don’t actually need to have the biggest and best of everything, sometimes

Tomulla Beach free camp

So that’s been challenge number one: Trying to find a proper, tough, well built, Australian made, off-road van with a very light Tare weight that will allow us to have our cake and eat it too. To carry enough water to go off-grid, to add in our existing payload (and nothing extra or flash or fancy) and all without the need for an expensive and unnecessary vehicle upgrade as well.

Stay tuned to see what we’ve found and what we’ve learnt along the way…
